Reader’s Links for June 22, 2020

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Reports have begun to filter out of the so-called ‘autonomous zone’ staked out in Seattle by a bunch of Left-wing extremists that seem to prove, anew, that life in utopia isn’t so grand after all, probably because there is no such thing as a ‘utopia’ that is occupied by mere mortals.

Standard news reporting has been sketchy and, in the case of local media, often fawning, regarding the zone known as CHOP. But actual life inside the zone is much different, and far more violent, that meets the eye, according to investigative journalist Andy Ngo, who recently spent five days there.

In a piece for the New York Post, Ngo – who has suffered physical injury at the hands of cultist fanatical Antifa members before – described the scene as one of anarchy, chaos, and insanity.

The New York Police Department announced last week that it would disband its controversial “anti-crime units,” impacting about 600 NYPD officers who patrolled in plainclothes.

The move was applauded by those who seek immediate police reform in the wake of the tragic killing of George Floyd.

“This is a seismic shift in the culture of how the NYPD polices this great city. It will be felt immediately in the communities that we protect,” New York Police Commissioner Dermot F. Shea said.

Unfortunately for New Yorkers, the impact of the reform was immediate — but it was not positive.

According to the New York Post, shootings in the city surged after the NYPD disbanded the plainclothes units. In fact, between Monday, the day Shea made his announcement, and Saturday, there had been 28 shooting incidents with 38 victims. The shootings accumulated at least five deaths.

  7. A memorial dedicated to survivors of the Holocaust was reportedly toppled by vandals at a cemetery in California last week, an action that comes as rioters have destroyed numerous statues across the country in recent days.

The fountain, which was found on the ground in broken pieces, was “part of a memorial created for the late Lillian Judd and her husband Emil, beloved figures in the local Jewish community who survived Nazi concentration camps during World War II,” The Press Democrat reported. “Jews visiting the northeast Santa Rosa cemetery used the fountain for ritual washing and cleansing.”

Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Dave Linscomb told the local newspaper that all indicators suggest that the fountain was pushed off its foundation.

During an interview with CBS Philadelphia radio program “Afternoons with Anthony Gargano and Rob Ellis,” NBA legend Charles Barkley had some choice words for members of the black community whom he considers “unintelligent” African Americans that believe “going to jail” is a good thing because it gives them street cred while they criticize others for not being “black enough.”

The question came when Barkley was asked to comment on a report regarding Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and how some of his NFL teammates feel he isn’t “black enough.”

“As I tell my white friends, we as black people [are] never going to be successful, not because of you white people, but because of other black people. 10. Lord Jamar is one of the most outspoken rappers on social media due to his provocative interviews on Vlad TV. In his interview from 2016 on the video channel, the former Brand Nubian member said that he doesn’t support the Black Lives Matter movement because “it’s not our movement.”

The topic came up after Vlad asked Jamar about Lil Wayne’s controversial Nightline interview where he dismissed the BLM movement.

The reason why he declined to support BLM is that “Black Lives Matter” is not a grassroots/organic movement. If it was, as Lord Jamar says, it’d be like back in the ’60s, when the black folks fought together for civil rights.

But today’s movement is largely pushed by white communist liberals – and it’s used to push their twisted and progressive agenda.

“This is a movement that was given to us by [billionaire financier] George Soros and his f—ing boys,” Jamar said. “Because they saw how things were going and they didn’t want to go back to the Sixties to where we start having our own organic movement – that was a big f—ing problem for them.”

  11. London to Erect Statues Celebrating Mass Migration (breitbart, Jun 22, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/06/22/london-erect-statues-mass-migration/

“Two large sculptures celebrating mass migration will be unveiled in London next year, the Guardian has revealed.

It was announced Monday, on the UK’s second ever ‘Windrush Day’ that works by artists Thomas J Price and Veronica Ryan will be erected in London’s Hackney borough in 2021. Windrush Day commemorates the beginning of the modern mass migration era in Britain in 1948, and was instituted in 2018 after members of that original generation of post-war migrant arrivals detained deported because of government error, causing a significant scandal.

The pieces, which include a sculpture of fruit and a nine-foot statue of a Hackney local are “a statement of pride” for members of the so-called Windrush generation and their descendants, according to the Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville.

The Labour politician said the new works would not be “an answer to the statue conversation” that has emerged with the Black Lives Matter protests, which have seen demonstrators vandalise and tear down sculptures of white figures across the UK.

“But I think it’s an early down payment on righting some of that wrong, and a chance to see more diverse people represented in a public realm,” he said in remarks reported by the Guardian.

Price, whose past works are typified by naturalistic sculptures of BAME males (pictured, above), told the Guardian he hoped the statues would highlight a deficit of non-white statues in Britain, asserting that “representation is incredibly important”.

“It’s been so lacking, we just haven’t had it. You can count on one hand the number of public sculptures of statues of non-white people, and it’s even worse for black people. You have to be Nelson Mandela. It’s incredible. And yet that is just seen as normal,” he said.

His piece, the liberal newspaper reports, will be a nine-foot-tall bronze figure, “created by using photo archives and digital 3D scans” of residents of London’s Hackney borough, the population of which is 40 per cent BAME and 36 per cent white British, according to the last census.

Price commented: “For the people who are here today who are British, but have to answer that question of: ‘Where you really from?’ They can see there’s a sculpture standing nine foot high, looking like someone they know, in the centre of Hackney.”

Montserrat-born sculptor Ryan, meanwhile, has designed statues of fruit and vegetables from the Caribbean, which she said represent the ideas of migration and identity

“I have memories of going to Ridley Road Market with my mother as a child to buy fruit and vegetables, fabrics, and sewing materials,” she said.

“The movement of fruit and vegetables across the globe historically exemplifies the way people have been part of that movement. Many fruit and vegetables have their origins in Asia, and Africa. The perception of origins, and belonging to specific places is an extended part of the conversation.”

Price added that the works would provide people with “a sense of visibility, connectedness, belonging, and an ownership of history that they’ve not been allowed to access fully”, allegedly because it is not taught at British schools.

News of the sculptures came shortly after London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced a review of all landmarks in the British capital, and vowed to replace any monuments deemed incompatible with “diversity” with tributes to LGBT and ethnic minority communities.

The controversial mayor has previously pledged support for several new landmarks along these lines, such as a memorial to the Windrush generation, a National Sikh War Memorial, and a memorial for Stephen Lawrence, a black male who was murdered by white men nearly three decades ago.

While slavery worldwide is at an all-time high, with London known as a hotspot for the modern form of this crime, Khan has also demanded the creation of a National Slavery Museum to “fight racism”, which would be focused on Britain’s role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade.”

  12. France’s Macron denounces Turkey’s attitude in Libya (abcnews, Jun 22, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/french-tunisian-heads-state-meet-paris-71385745

“French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that Turkey’s attitude in Libya is “unacceptable” as France sees Ankara as an obstacle to securing a cease-fire in the conflict-torn country.

Macron spoke at an evening news conference with Tunisian President Kais Saied in Paris.

Macron urged Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to end his country’s actions in Libya.

“I consider today that Turkey plays in Libya a dangerous game and is in breach of all its commitments,” he said.

Macron said he discussed the issue with U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone call earlier on Monday.

The White House said the two leaders agreed on the urgent need for a cease-fire in Libya and for the rapid resumption of negotiations by the Libyan parties. Trump and Macron reiterated that military escalation on all sides must stop immediately to prevent the Libyan conflict from becoming even more dangerous and intractable.

Tensions between France and Turkey escalated following a June 10 incident between Turkish warships and a French naval vessel in the Mediterranean, which France considers a hostile act under NATO’s rules of engagement. Turkey has denied harassing the French frigate.

France accused Ankara of repeated violations of the U.N. arms embargo on conflict-torn Libya.

Libya has been in turmoil since 2011 when a NATO-backed uprising toppled leader Moammar Gadhafi, who was later killed.

The country has since been split between rival administrations in the east and the west, each backed by armed groups and different foreign governments.

On his first trip to Europe since he was elected in October last year, Saied is also the first head of state to visit France since the lockdown of the country amid the pandemic. Virus restrictions enforced in France in mid-March have almost all been lifted in recent weeks.

Tunisia has strong political and economic ties with France, its former colonial power.

Monday’s meeting in Paris, followed by a dinner at the Elysee presidential palace, also comes less than two weeks after Tunisia’s parliament rejected a motion calling on France to apologize for crimes permitted during the colonial era and pay reparations.

Opponents argued that such a move would spell economic disaster, given that France is Tunisia’s top trading partner and No. 1 foreign investor. It’s also home to 1 million Tunisians.

But proponents of the motion said an apology is necessary to “turn the page on this dark period” in the history of the two countries and put their relations on a more equal footing.

The debate came amid renewed anger in some European countries about colonialism’s crimes, stemming from protests in the U.S. over racial injustice and police violence after the death of George Floyd.

France occupied Tunisia as a protectorate for 75 years, from 1881 until 1956. French soldiers only left Tunisian territory in 1963.”

  13. Turkish lawyers stage sit-in protest near capital (abcnews, Jun 22, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/turkish-lawyers-stage-sit-protest-capital-71382628

“The heads of several Turkish lawyers’ associations on Monday began a sit-in demonstration after police blocked the group from marching to the capital, Ankara.

The heads of Bar Associations from various cities embarked on a march to Ankara last week in their robes to protest government plans to amend laws regulating lawyers and their associations, including the way they elect the association’s regional chairs.

The lawyers say the changes are aimed at reducing the clout of the associations, many of which are outspoken critics of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government.

Police blocked the group at a main highway leading into the city, briefly sparking scuffles between the lawyers and officers.

The lawyers — who had aimed to reach the mausoleum of the Turkish Republic’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk — then began a sit-in protest, HaberTurk news channel reported. Ankara-based lawyers who arrived to greet the arriving group also joined the protest.”

  14. Rights watchdog urges France to fight racial discrimination (abcnews, Jun 22, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/rights-watchdog-urges-france-fight-racial-discrimination-71384764

“France’s human rights watchdog on Monday urged authorities to take key measures to fight racial discrimination as the country has seen a series of anti-racism gatherings in the wake of the death of George Floyd in the U.S.

In an 80-page report, France’s defender of rights, Jacques Toubon, said discrimination affects the lives of millions of people and their fundamental rights in the country.

“People with foreign origins, or perceived as having them, are disadvantaged in terms of access to jobs or housing and more exposed to unemployment, poverty, poor housing, police ID checks, poor health and educational inequality,” Toubon said in a statement.

Statistics and scientific studies show that racial discrimination has a “systemic dimension” in French society, Toubon noted.

The report came as two Paris statues related to France’s colonial era were daubed with red paint Monday amid growing demands by anti-racism activists in several countries to take down monuments that honor prominent historical figures who played a role in the slave trade or colonialism.

Also on Monday, dozens of people peacefully gathered in front and in support of a mural painting denouncing racism and police brutality in Stains, next to Paris. The protesters gathered in reaction to an unauthorized police union protest demanding its removal.

The police union claimed the mural “generalizes and creates confusion” around police racism and violence, which they denounce as false accusations.

The mural was painted by local artists and inaugurated by the Stains mayor last week in homage to Adama Traore, a Black Frenchman who died in police custody in 2016. Traore died in 2016 in circumstances that remain unclear despite four years of back-and-forth autopsies.

Mostly Black, North African and a few white people attended the protest staged by Traore’s supporters.

Josué Isakwa, 17, came to protest police violence and racism. “When we were kids, big people would tell us about it, and we would laugh about it,” he said.

But at around 15 years old, Isakwa said he witnessed his first instance of police slapping people and harassing them. “I remember it very distinctly, it was the first day of Ramadan, on a Sunday,” he said.

There was no police presence during the protest and it scattered peacefully an hour later.

In his report, the defender of rights said that “people identified as Black and Arab are subject to bias and discrimination practices on a systemic basis in their relations with police forces.”

Toubon proposed creating a body to better monitor the situation in the country and to organize national testing campaigns to uncover racial discrimination in hiring, housing and in business.

He also suggested stricter rules for police ID checks and legal changes to make it easier to prove discrimination cases in court and ensure “dissuasive” penalties.”

Democrats blame the “boogeyman of systemic racism” to avoid responsibility for the volume of violent crime in black communities in cities they run, said Ken Blackwell, former mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, who offered his remarks on the Wednesday edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow.

“The real systemic and deadly reality is that black men and women are being slaughtered in cities and communities of color across the country in numbers that can only be compared to war zones in Iraq and Syria,” said Blackwell, reflecting on a column he wrote with former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik regarding crime in Democrat-run cities, “Every single one of those cities have been run by Democrats, and in some cases, [for] as long as 40 years. [Kerik and I] just took exception to the fact that these mayors were passing the buck. These local officials were passing a buck.”

    Blackwell and Kerik wrote:

To be clear, whether they were armed, or unarmed, or in possession of a toy that looked like a real weapon, in every single category, blacks were not killed more often than whites. Given the numbers — 14 unarmed blacks killed out of 10 million arrests, which equates to a rate of 0.00014 percent — this is NOT evidence of systemic racism.

  17. DC Police Union poll: 71 percent of cops prepping to leave department

DC Police Union poll results paint a stark image of a metropolitan police department whose sworn law enforcement officers are preparing to depart the police force as police reform legislation seemingly hampers any attempts at law and order principles and protocols. As is the case in a growing list of cities whose cops are being abandoned and subjected to undeniable peril and misplaced disrespect stemming from the grotesque actions of a few bad apples, the DC establishment who have been feeding the ugly, anarchistic beast will likely have to fend for themselves…or wait until a demoralized and depleted cop shop can muster a uniform or two.

In a press release, the DC Police Union which “represents the 3,600 officers, detectives and sergeants of the District of Columbia’s Metropolitan Police Department” cited 71 percent of the DC police force is gearing to go elsewhere, even alluding to a change of careers.

“Overall, subgroups who normally approve of Trump’s job as president, were the most likely to believe Biden could be suffering from dementia,” the poll found. “Thus, majorities of Republicans (77% more likely/23% less likely) and Independents (56% more likely/44% less likely) thought Joe Biden had early-onset dementia; while nearly a third of Democrats (32% more likely/68% less likely) thought this was the case.”

  21. 1 Dead, 11 Wounded In Minneapolis Mass Shooting

Twelve people were shot overnight in a mass shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a city struggling with whether to “defund” and “disband” their police department following the death of George Floyd, a black man who perished while in Minneapolis police custody.

CNN reports that the shooting took place on Hennepin Avenue South, in a district of the city already rocked by protests and riots over the last several weeks. The “melee” left one person dead and at least 11 wounded, though none of the wounded appear to have life-threatening injuries.

Minneapolis police say they have not made an arrest.

“Witnesses said Hennepin Avenue South was also the scene of looting and destruction when violence marred the protests against police brutality and the death of George Floyd, who was killed in the same city,” per CNN. “Some of the same businesses on the street, which had just finished repairing damage from last month, are now left with shattered windows from the shooting.”

Witnesses say that at least two groups of people were shooting at each other,(/strong> and the shooting, which took place just after midnight, “continued up the block” until the two groups disappeared into the night, leaving a mess — and at least one person dead. The ground was littered with shells, witnesses told local media, from at least three different weapons.

  22. Ivory Coast Says It Has Captured Jihadist Leader Behind Border Attack
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2020/06/22/ivory-coast-captured-jihadist-leader/

“Ivory Coast said Monday it had captured a jihadist who led a deadly attack on a frontier post this month and arrested a “very large” number of his subordinates.

“The commander of the team who led the action was taken yesterday,” Defence Minister Hamed Bakayoko said at a military camp in Abidjan, during a speech honoring soldiers killed during the border raid. He did not identify the individual or give any details about the capture.

“We will go further as the investigation progresses. We will know who he was in contact with, who is behind it,” he said. Bakayoko also said the authorities had carried out a “very large (number) of arrests of people directly involved” in the attack.

The military says “around 10” army personnel died and six were wounded on June 11 when dozens of jihadists mounted a pre-dawn attack at Kafolo, on the northeastern border with Burkina Faso.

Other sources put the death toll at 12, comprising 11 soldiers and a gendarme, and describe the raid as a reprisal for an anti-jihadist crackdown.

It was the first assault by Islamist extremists on Ivorian soil since March 2016, when a raid on hotel terraces in the southeastern beach resort of Grand-Bassam left 19 people dead.

The latest attack was carried out by the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an organization linked to Al-Qaeda, according to a source in Burkina Faso.

Bakayoko said the arrests of people who took part in the assault came thanks to photos retrieved from mobile phones.

On June 18, the Ivorian army said it had carried out a sweep in the Kafolo area and in the neighboring Camoe National Park, a reputed haven for jihadists. Troops picked up 27 people, destroyed logistical material, and seized communications equipment, it said.

    Fear of Spreading Revolt
Security analysts have long worried that a jihadist revolt in the Sahel that began in Mali in 2012 is spreading towards coastal states on the Gulf of Guinea.

Jihadist violence, often intertwined with inter-communal violence, resulted in 4,000 deaths in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso in 2019, according to the UN.

The attack on Kafolo shook Ivory Coast, which has only recently returned to stability after a decade-long period of turbulence and faces presidential elections on October 31. A major exporter of cocoa and coffee, it has also returned to its position as the biggest economy in West Africa.

President Alassane Ouattara will take part in a funeral tribute to the soldiers, Bakayoko said. The date of the ceremony has yet to be set.

Ivory Coast shares a 550-kilometer (340-mile) border with Burkina Faso, where jihadist violence has claimed nearly 1,000 lives and forced 860,000 people from their homes over the past five years.

The June 11 attack took place in the same zone where the two countries last month launched a ground-breaking joint operation to flush out jihadists.

“Operation Comoe,” named after a river that flows through the two countries, led to the death of eight suspected jihadists, the capture of 38 others and the destruction of a “terrorist base” at Alidougou in Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast army said on May 24.”

  23. Iraqis Flee Border Areas as Turkey Strikes Kurdish Positions
    https://english.aawsat.com/home/article/2348426/iraqis-flee-border-areas-turkey-strikes-kurdish-positions

“Dozens of civilians fled villages in northern Iraq on Monday as Turkey stepped up a military campaign targeting Kurdish rebels that has drawn condemnation from Iraqi officials.

Residents loaded trucks with their belongings and shepherds led livestock out of the Iraqi border village of Keshani as Turkish forces bombarded suspected positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which has waged a decades-long insurgency against Turkey.

Turkey launched an air and ground offensive into the border region last week in a campaign to root out the PKK, which Ankara maintains has bases in northern Iraq. Those fleeing said they were afraid of airstrikes and Turkish troops entering their homes.

“We are scared because of the Turks. We don’t want our kids to be killed, so we have to leave, but we don’t have any place to go,” a woman fleeing Keshani said.

“Nothing is left and our government didn’t do anything,” she said, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of security concerns.

Around 15 families reside in Keshani, where most tend to farmland and livestock, according to Delsher Abdulsatatr, the mayor of a nearby town.

The Turkish military announced late Sunday that a soldier died in a hospital in Turkey of wounds sustained in fighting. His death brings the Turkish death toll in the operation to two. At least seven civilians have reportedly been killed on the Iraqi side.

Turkey regularly carries out air and ground attacks against the PKK in northern Iraq. It says neither the Iraqi government nor the regional Iraqi Kurdish administration have taken measures to combat the group.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador twice last week to convey what it said was a “strongly worded protest.”

Turkey’s raids have drawn widespread condemnation in the Arab world, slamming it for violating Iraq’s sovereignty.”

“The Cairo Criminal Court yesterday sentenced 13 defendants to life imprisonment, and three others to 15-year terms on charges of joining Al-Nusra Front and participating in its operations.

The State Security Prosecution previously referred the 16 defendants to trial on charges of leading a terrorist group aimed at obstructing the constitution and the law, assaulting personal freedoms, harming national unity by joining a group affiliated with the Al-Qaeda terrorist organisation, attacking the Egyptian armed forces and police and targeting public facilities.

According to investigations, two defendants joined Al-Nusra Front in Syria, received military training there and carried out attacks against non-Egyptian targets.

Rights groups have on numerous occasions accused Egyptian courts of using terror charges to silence dissenting voices, while trials are often held in secret with the accused not given the opportunity for a defence.”

“The Office of the National Security Council confirmed that last week one of the deadliest weeks for the Afghan forces in the past 19 years during which at4 last 291 security personnel lost their lives.

Javid Faisal, a spokesperson for the Office of National Security Council, said the Taliban militants carried out 422 attacks in 32 provinces last week.

“The past week was the deadliest of the past 19 years. Taliban carried out 422 attacks in 32 provinces, martyring 291 ANDSF members and wounding 550 others.”

He also added “Taliban’s commitment to reduce violence is meaningless, and their actions inconsistent with their rhetoric on peace.”

This comes as efforts underway to find a negotiated settlement to end the ongoing violence in Afghanistan.

Efforts are also underway to start intra-Afghan talks aimed at ending the ongoing violence in the country.

The U.S. and Taliban representatives signed a peace deal late in February this year with the release of prisoners being one of the key points for the launch of intra-Afghan talks.

Both the Afghan government and Taliban have so far released hundreds of prisoners to help the peace process.”

  29. Lowering Turkmen flags in Kirkuk gives Turkey right to intervene: MHP leader
    https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/lowering-turkmen-flags-in-kirkuk-gives-turkey-right-to-intervene-mhp-leader-155912

“Lowering the flags of the Turkmens in northern Iraq’s oil-rich Kirkuk and planting the PKK’s symbols instead of them gives Turkey every right to intervene, the head of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahçeli has suggested.

“The PKK is in the streets of Iraq’s city of Sulaymaniyah. In Kirkuk, Turkmens’ flags were lowered and the PKK’s symbols have been planted. These developments give Turkey a legitimate right to intervene and struggle in the toughest way,” Bahçeli said in a written statement on June 22.

There were recent reports in the media that the PKK has started to gain control in Suleymaniyah and in some parts of Kirkuk in northern Iraq amid recently launched military operation by the Turkish Armed Forces against the terrorists.

Reports suggested that the Turkmen flags were removed in some parts in Kirkuk by the PKK terrorists.

“The Claw-Tiger operation launched by Turkey’s national forces on June 15 is a strong message to the terrorists and their sponsors. The next message was conveyed by the launch of the Operation Claw-Tiger which destroyed the terrorists’ shelters,” Bahçeli stated.

Turkey has hit the Haftanin province in northern Iraq where the PKK is trying to establish its new headquarters, he said.

“As seen, the situation will escalate and the region will pass through hot days. And Turkey will continue to use its legitimate right to self-defense stemming from the international law,” Bahçeli added.”

  30. Migrants in Europe face ‘racist, discriminatory hostile’ policies: Erdo?an
    https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/migrants-in-europe-face-racist-discriminatory-hostile-policies-erdogan-155892

“The immigrants, who managed to reach Europe, were victims of “racist, discriminatory and hostile” policies, President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an said on June 21.

“The inhumane scenes we witnessed at the Turkish-Greece border last year are significant in laying bare the point of view towards migrants by certain western countries. The COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated the inconveniences migrants face, making their already-vulnerable situation even more difficult,” he said delivering a speech at the closing ceremony of the International Migration Film Festival via videoconference.

“As the members of a civilization who believe in the abundance of sharing and the power of solidarity, we did not discriminate against anyone. While countries with a lot more opportunities compared to us imposed dozens of quotas, we embraced everyone regardless of race, religion, language, and ethnicity. We treated the oppressed and disadvantaged people who took refuge in our country by offering the same opportunities we offered to our citizens,” Erdo?an stated.

Turkey has led comprehensive policies in dealing with refugees, including accommodation, health, education, social integration, President Erdo?an, however, noted that throughout this process, Turkey failed to receive any support from many countries, including the EU, who “allegedly are dire defendants of democracy and human rights”. Turkey was left to shoulder the burden of irregular migration all by itself since the promises made to it weren’t delivered, he said.

The President underlined that even though the notion of refugee and migration was tried to be dealt with only within the scope of safety due to the irregular movement of people from Syria and Africa, it was a multidimensional issue.

“Migration is at the same time a new union, it is people from different ethnic identities, religions, languages, cultures embracing one another. What is experienced during a migration period leaves new words in our language, new tastes in our mouths, and new associations in our memories,” he said.

The president emphasized that the movie industry is a very powerful tool in effectively telling the migration stories, be they stories of joy or sorrow.

“I am so delighted to see that the richness and diversity migration consists of have been reflected in the International Migration Film Festival,” he stated.”

“At least 438 suspects were remanded into custody over their links to Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), the group behind the 2016 coup bid in Turkey.

Earlier, the court had issued arrests warrants for 928 suspects.

In the past eight months, 847 suspects were the arrested in six separate operations.

Of them, 145 suspects were released under the remorse law and 241 under judicial review measures.

Moreover, 23 suspects were released due to their health condition.

Security forces are on the lookout for 81 more suspects.

FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup on July 15, 2016, which left 251 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.”

  32. Two NGO ships with nearly 280 migrants arrive in Sicily as migration wave to Europe grows
    https://rmx.news/article/article/two-ngo-ships-with-nearly-280-migrants-arrive-in-sicily-as-migration-wave-to-europe-grows

“Two non-profit migrant ships carrying a total of nearly 280 migrants have docked in Sicily this weekend after Italian authorities gave them the green light.

The decision from Italy’s left-wing government comes despite the country continuing to grapple with deep economic and social fallout from the coronavirus crisis.

The German non-profit organization Sea-Watch’s ship containing 211 migrants picked up in the Mediterranean Sea in recent days was permitted to dock in the port of Porto Empedocle.

It was the first ship that has been allowed to dock in Italy since the country closed its ports to migrants due concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

The migrants will have to spend a mandatory two-week quarantine aboard the Moby Zaza ferry.

On Saturday evening, the Italian ship Mare Jonio of the non-profit initiative Mediterranea, which had 67 migrants on board, arrived in another Sicilian port of Pozzallo.

After three-month long break forced by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ocean Viking, operated by the SOS Méditerranée, is preparing to launch rescue operations at sea.

Departure from the port of Marseille was originally planned on Saturday, but thwarted due to bad weather, the AFP agency wrote.

The ship sailed on Monday morning from the port of Marseille and is now heading for Libyan waters, where it will assist migrants who find themselves in a crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. Strict rules have been introduced on board to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Critics say the NGO ships encourage more dangerous migration
Most of the ships participate in rescue of migrants, but critics of the operations say that the ships encourage more migrants to take the risky journey under the belief that they will be saved by the NGO ships. Migrants sometimes also call NGOs, which will issue an SOS signal on behalf of the migrants even if their ship is not in immediate danger.

In an article published in Die Welt in February of this year, political editor Marcel Leubecher acknowledged that most of the migrants headed to Europe in boats across the Mediterranean are not genuine refugees, and this fact often leads them to having little chance of having their asylum applications approved.

“Contrary to popular belief, the majority of those arriving in Italy are not refugees. The main countries of origin for boat migrants in January were Algeria, the Ivory Coast, and Bangladesh,” Leubecher wrote.

League party leader Matteo Salvini has criticized the government for allowing ships to dock in Italy and warned this month that 20,000 migrants are planning to leave from Libya for Europe. During his tenure as interior minister, he banned the ships from bringing migrants to Italian soil.

According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), by mid-May this year, the number of people leaving Libya for Europe has increased by 120 percent compared to the same period last year.

This year, more than 8,300 migrants sailed from the shores of Libya, last year it was about 3,700. In total, over 22,000 people crossed the sea to one of the European countries this year, with almost half of them heading to Greece.

As Remix reported, the number of migrants arriving in the European Union increased sharply in May after a decline in previous months caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In May, authorities recorded almost 4,300 illegal border crossings on Europe’s main migration routes, about three times as many as in April, according to the latest data published by Frontex, the European Border, and Coast Guard Agency.”

  33. CHINA – Yulin Dog meat festival – from June 21st to June 30th

China’s Yulin Dog Meat Festival Opens Despite Country’s Moves Away from the Dog Meat Trade

In April, two Chinese cities were the first in the country to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat

The summer solstice — this year on June 20 — marks the beginning of the infamous Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China.

Animal rights activists, who have been trying to shut down the festival — where live and dead dogs are sold for human consumption — for years, were cautiously optimistic that the event wouldn’t happen this year due to China’s recent legislative changes.

After the start on the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, China changed the classification of the country’s dogs from livestock to companion animal, a move that many animal welfare groups, like Humane Society International, believe signals a move towards banning dog meat consumption in the country.

Additionally, two Chinese cities, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, did ban the consumption of dog and cat meat around the same time China changed their classification for canines. Reuters also reported that China’s government is currently drawing up new laws prohibiting wildlife trade and protecting companion animals.

While the classification change was celebrated as a “game-changer moment for animal welfare in China” by HSI spokesperson Wendy Higgins in The Guardian, and China’s interest in dog meat is dwindling, according to Reuters, it was not enough to stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival from continuing on this year.

Even though the 10-day festival is happening in 2020, animal welfare groups remain optimistic that China’s moves to legally protect companion animals could bring an end to the Yulin Dog Meat Festival as early as next year.

“I do hope Yulin will change not only for the sake of the animals but also for the health and safety of its people,” Peter Li, a China policy specialist with Humane Society International, told Reuters.

He added: “Allowing mass gatherings to trade in and consume dog meat in crowded markets and restaurants in the name of a festival poses a significant public health risk.”

    reuters – China’s annual dog-meat fair opens

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China’s notorious dog-meat festival has opened in defiance of a government campaign to improve animal welfare and reduce risks to health highlighted by the novel coronavirus outbreak, but activists are hopeful its days are numbered.

The annual 10-day festival in the southwestern city of Yulin usually attracts thousands of visitors, many of whom buy dogs for the pot that are on display in cramped cages, but campaigners said the numbers this year have dwindled.

The government is drawing up new laws to prohibit the wildlife trade and protect pets, and campaigners are hoping that this year will be the last time the festival is held.

“I do hope Yulin will change not only for the sake of the animals but also for the health and safety of its people,” said Peter Li, China policy specialist with the Humane Society International, an animal rights group.

“Allowing mass gatherings to trade in and consume dog meat in crowded markets and restaurants in the name of a festival poses a significant public health risk,” he said.

The coronavirus, which is believed to have originated in horseshoe bats before crossing into humans in a market in the city of Wuhan, has forced China to reassess its relationship with animals, and it has vowed to ban the wildlife trade.

In April, Shenzhen became the first city in China to ban the consumption of dogs, with others expected to follow.

The agriculture ministry also decided to classify dogs as pets rather than livestock, though it remains unclear how the reclassification will affect Yulin’s trade.

Zhang Qianqian, an animal rights activist who was in Yulin on Saturday, said it was only a matter of time before the dog-meat festival was banned.

“From what we understand from our conversations with meat sellers, leaders have said the consumption of dog meat won’t be allowed in future,” she said.

“But banning dog-meat consumption is going to be hard and will take some time.”

  36. Germany: “Democrats in Germany are behind the police” – Stuttgart mayor on riots against police

Mayor of Stuttgart Fritz Kuhn reassured that “democrats in Germany” were “behind the police” and that they supported them, following the riots and attacks suffered by the security agents over the past weekend.

While addressing the journalists in Baden-Wuerttember’s capital city on Monday, the mayor stressed that the people behind the riots were “criminals” committing “criminal acts.”

“The peaceful people, who at 11 or 12 (at night) drink a glass of beer or wine: those are not meant by that statement,” said Kuhn.

“One should not mix peacefully celebrating people with violent people. People who would devastate the city are criminals. Stuttgart, otherwise ,has a friendly party scene” he added.

According to reports, violence broke out in Stuttgart close to midnight on Saturday when officers started conducting checks at the city’s main square.

After a 17-year-old German was arrested over an alleged drug offence hundreds of young people began throwing stones and bottles at officers.

The crowd then resorted to looting stores and smashing vehicles until the situation was brought under control at around 03:00 AM
