Reader’s Links for June 10, 2020

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  4. Americans Don’t Kneel
Is there anything more disgusting than an American on his knees before a tyrant?

Every four years, athletes from around the world gather to compete at the Olympics. Before the games start, there’s a processional into the host stadium. It’s one of the most inspirational moments to witness. Each country’s team comes in clad in uniforms that harken to the culture, heritage, and history of their home.

The United States team is one of the last teams to enter the arena due to their name starting with “U,” and they are unlike any other team in myriad ways. First off, they’re exuberant, joyful, and bursting with optimistic energy in a way that’s obviously and uniquely American but difficult to quantify. Second, they’re diverse. Every color, every race, every ethnicity, creed, and background is represented on the U.S. team. Despite their diversity, they’re united. It’s beautiful and in stark contrast to other countries who claim open-mindedness but due to their culture are homogenous in look and belief.

But the most important way the United States Olympians are different from every other country: They don’t bow. To anyone.

When the Games were held in Spain, every other team stopped, turned to face the King and bowed their heads. In contrast, the Americans walked to the King’s box, did not turn their bodies, but turned their heads, looked into the King’s eyes, turned back, and kept walking. They showed respect for the man, but they did not bow. The King is just a man, after all.

“The detailed discussions of the clusters following the opening up of venues clearly illustrates the increased risk of transmission in enclosed, indoor venues with high density, including houses of worship. The clusters keep growing and expanding in geographic location. One wonders if another heightened measures might be implemented to slow down the transmission.

The impression (hasn’t changed): lifting of measures has been accompanied by increases in locally acquired infections through increasing clusters related to gatherings of people at employment (bringing it outside employment to contacts) and in houses of worship, and bars and clubs.

It just takes ONE super spreader in a crowded place to transmit and lead to a sizeable cluster.

==>Update on clusters as of June 8, 2020:
    – The nightclub cluster: 3 additional cases were confirmed. In total, 277 cases.

    – Coupang logistics center cluster in Bucheon-si, Gyeonggi Province: 1 additional case (a contact). 139 cases.

    – The newly planted churches in the Seoul Metropolitan Region: 1 additional case was confirmed. In total, 88 cases.

    — Battle Bird (@calybird) June 9, 2020

On Tuesday “Free Capitol Hill” the antifa “Autonomous Zone” released its list of demands from the Seattle and Washington State governments.

The list includes reparations, ending the police and free stuff — pretty much what you would expect from a bunch of illiterate leftie kids.

    Via Medium:

Given the historical moment, we’ll begin with our demands pertaining to the Justice System.

The Seattle Police Department and attached court system are beyond reform. We do not request reform, we demand abolition. We demand that the Seattle Council and the Mayor defund and abolish the Seattle Police Department and the attached Criminal Justice Apparatus. This means 100% of funding, including existing pensions for Seattle Police. At an equal level of priority we also demand that the city disallow the operations of ICE in the city of Seattle.
In the transitionary period between now and the dismantlement of the Seattle Police Department, we demand that the use of armed force be banned entirely. No guns, no batons, no riot shields, no chemical weapons, especially against those exercising their First Amendment right as Americans to protest.
We demand an end to the school-to-prison pipeline and the abolition of youth jails. Get kids out of prison, get cops out of schools. We also demand that the new youth prison being built in Seattle currently be repurposed.
We demand that not the City government, nor the State government, but that the Federal government launch a full-scale investigation into past and current cases of police brutality in Seattle and Washington, as well as the re-opening of all closed cases reported to the Office of Police Accountability. In particular, we demand that cases particular to Seattle and Washington be reopened where no justice has been served, namely the cases of Iosia Faletogo, Damarius Butts, Isaiah Obet, Tommy Le, Shaun Fuhr, and Charleena Lyles.
We demand reparations for victims of police brutality, in a form to be determined.
We demand that the City of Seattle make the names of officers involved in police brutality a matter of public record. Anonymity should not even be a privilege in public service.
We demand a retrial of all People in Color currently serving a prison sentence for violent crime, by a jury of their peers in their community.
We demand decriminalization of the acts of protest, and amnesty for protestors generally, but specifically those involved in what has been termed “The George Floyd Rebellion” against the terrorist cell that previously occupied this area known as the Seattle Police Department. This includes the immediate release of all protestors currently being held in prison after the arrests made at 11th and Pine on Sunday night and early Saturday morning June 7th and 8th, and any other protesters arrested in the past two weeks of the uprising, the name Evan Hreha in particular comes to mind who filmed Seattle police macing a young girl and is now in jail.
We demand that the City of Seattle and the State Government release any prisoner currently serving time for a marijuana-related offense and expunge the related conviction.
We demand the City of Seattle and State Government release any prisoner currently serving time just for resisting arrest if there are no other related charges, and that those convictions should also be expunged.
We demand that prisoners currently serving time be given the full and unrestricted right to vote, and for Washington State to pass legislation specifically breaking from Federal law that prevents felons from being able to vote.
We demand an end to prosecutorial immunity for police officers in the time between now and the dissolution of the SPD and extant justice system.
We demand the abolition of imprisonment, generally speaking, but especially the abolition of both youth prisons and privately-owned, for-profit prisons.
We demand in replacement of the current criminal justice system the creation of restorative/transformative accountability programs as a replacement for imprisonment.
We demand autonomy be given to the people to create localized anti-crime systems.
We demand that the Seattle Police Department, between now and the time of its abolition in the near future, empty its “lost and found” and return property owned by denizens of the city.
We demand justice for those who have been sexually harassed or abused by the Seattle Police Department or prison guards in the state of Washington.
We demand that between now and the abolition of the SPD that each and every SPD officer turn on their body cameras, and that the body camera video of all Seattle police should be a matter of easily accessible public record.
We demand that the funding previously used for Seattle Police be redirected into: A) Socialized Health and Medicine for the City of Seattle. B) Free public housing, because housing is a right, not a privilege. C) Public education, to decrease the average class size in city schools and increase teacher salary. D) Naturalization services for immigrants to the United States living here undocumented. (We demand they be called “undocumented” because no person is illegal.) E) General community development. Parks, etc.

We also have economic demands that must be addressed.

We demand the de-gentrification of Seattle, starting with rent control.
We demand the restoration of city funding for arts and culture to re-establish the once-rich local cultural identity of Seattle.
We demand free college for the people of the state of Washington, due to the overwhelming effect that education has on economic success, and the correlated overwhelming impact of poverty on people of color, as a form of reparations for the treatment of Black people in this state and country.
We demand that between now and the abolition of the SPD that Seattle Police be prohibited from performing “homeless sweeps” that displace and disturb our homeless neighbors, and on equal footing we demand an end to all evictions.
We demand a decentralized election process to give the citizens of Seattle a greater ability to select candidates for public office such that we are not forced to choose at the poll between equally undesirable options. There are multiple systems and policies in place which make it impractical at best for working-class people to run for public office, all of which must go, starting with any fees associated with applying to run for public office.

Related to economic demands, we also have demands pertaining to what we would formally call “Health and Human Services.”

We demand the hospitals and care facilities of Seattle employ black doctors and nurses specifically to help care for black patients.
We demand the people of Seattle seek out and proudly support Black-owned businesses. Your money is our power and sustainability.
We demand that the city create an entirely separate system staffed by mental health experts to respond to 911 calls pertaining to mental health crises, and insist that all involved in such a program be put through thorough, rigorous training in conflict de-escalation.

Finally, let us now address our demands regarding the education system in the City of Seattle and State of Washington.

We demand that the history of Black and Native Americans be given a significantly greater focus in the Washington State education curriculum.
We demand that thorough anti-bias training become a legal requirement for all jobs in the education system, as well as in the medical profession and in mass media.
We demand the City of Seattle and State of Washington remove any and all monuments dedicated to historical figures of the Confederacy, whose treasonous attempts to build an America with slavery as a permanent fixture were an affront to the human race.

Transcribed by @irie_kenya and @AustinCHowe. Special thanks to Magik for starting and facilitating the discussion to create this list, to Omari Salisbury for the idea to break the list into categories, and as well a thanks to Kshama Sawant for being the only Seattle official to discuss with the people on Free Capitol Hill the night that it was liberated.

  9. Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza dies suddenly after reports he was being treated for COVID-19

Burundi’s long-ruling president, Pierre Nkurunziza, has died suddenly of what his government said was cardiac arrest, just days after local media reported that he and his wife were being treated for COVID-19.

Mr. Nkurunziza, 55, had shown no sign of illness until he was admitted to hospital in the town of Karuzi on Saturday. After appearing to recover on Sunday, his health worsened “to very great surprise” on Monday and he could not be revived, despite several hours of effort…

In the early weeks of the pandemic, government officials had insisted that Burundi was “protected by God” and would not suffer from the virus.

Burundi was one of the few countries worldwide that refused to ban sports events or take other restrictive measures. It also allowed mass campaign rallies of tens of thousands of people during the election last month. Face masks were rarely seen.
Four experts from the World Health Organization, who had reportedly questioned the government’s response to the pandemic, were expelled from Burundi last month.

The president’s wife, Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza, was airlifted to Kenya on May 29 to be treated for COVID-19 at a top hospital in Nairobi, according to Kenyan media…

If the link to COVID-19 is confirmed, he would be the first world leader to have died of the coronavirus.

Mr. Nkurunziza, an avid soccer player and sports fan, had attended a volleyball game as recently as Saturday, according to the government statement. On Sunday, he was interacting with people around him, until the sudden worsening of his condition, the statement said.

Burundi has reported only 83 cases of the coronavirus and one death. But at last report, a total of only 382 tests had been conducted in the country of 11 million – one of the world’s lowest rates of testing. There were unconfirmed reports of many deaths from the virus in Burundi.

  19. Yemen’s Houthis spark outrage with new ‘racist tax’ benefiting claimed descendants of Prophet Muhammad
    https://english.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2020/6/10/yemens-houthis-issues-tax-benefiting-prophet-muhammad-descendants

“Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have sparked outrage by issuing a new tax granting the “Bani Hashem” tribe – which the movement’s leaders are part – 20 percent of the value of all resources extracted from land, sea, and livestock in the war-torn country.

The Houthis claim that the Bani Hashem tribe are descended from the Prophet Muhammad and so eligible to revenues generated from a special tax.

They have modified the country’s 1999 Zakah Islamic charity law to allow the tax to be collected based on a controversial interpretation of Islamic jurisprudence.

Yemenis have reacted angrily to the tax on social media, saying that the law was “racist” and allowed the Houthis to get away with theft.

The Arabic news website Arabi 21 quoted Adil Al-??Ahmadi, the director of the Nashwan Al-Hemyari Centre for Studies and Media, as saying that the tax was “an official Houthi insult to the entire Yemeni people”.

He added that the Houthis were exploiting religion to impose a “racist” tax.

“The Houthi group has found dozens of ways to gain money, from taking it through war to organising religious festivals and now the ‘fifth’ tax. What’s left for ordinary Yemenis who have nothing?” he told Arabi21.

Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Middle East and its people have endured great hardship and starvation as a result of five years of brutal and complex conflict between the Houthis, who control the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

The Prime Minister of the internationally-recognized government, Maeen Abdel Malik, echoed Al-Ahmadi’s words, saying in a tweet that the law was “racist and discriminatory”.

“The Houthis’ publication of what they call the Zakah law, which is based on hereditary discrimination and racism doesn’t just show this group’s ability to tear up the fabric of society and its rejection of the values of equal citizenship, but it also shows their contempt for the people and for all opportunities for peace.”, he tweeted.

However, the Houthis said that the tax had been in place since 1999. Sheikh Shamsan Abu Nashtan, the head of the Houthi’s “General Organization for Zakah” said that his group had been the target of a hostile media campaign.

“The Zakah law is not new. It’s the same law issued in 1999 and we haven’t changed anything in it,” he told the website of the Houthis’ television station, Al-Masirah.

  21. Turkey rules out war with Greece over maritime problems
    https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-rules-out-war-with-greece-over-maritime-problems-155529

“Defense Minister Hulusi Akar has negated his Greek counterpart’s concerns of an armed conflict between Turkey and Greece over the maritime disputes in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, calling on Athens to resume technical talks for the resolution of the problems.

“I want to underline in a mathematical certainty that Greeks would not want to stage a war with Turkey,” Akar told the private broadcaster A Haber in an interview on June 10.

Akar’s words came a week after Greek Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos said that his country was ready for a military conflict with Turkey to defend its sovereign rights in the Mediterranean. “[His statement] is a slip of tongue,” Akar said.

Turkey has always been seeking good neighborly relations with Greece and resolution of all the problems stemming from Aegean, Cyprus and the land borders through dialogue, the minister said, recalling some progress was made during the past talks.

“We had three rounds of talks with our Greek partners. Two in Athens and one in Ankara. We are renewing our calls for holding the fourth meeting in Ankara,” the minister stated.

Akar, however, urged Greece not to look at these issues in a selfish way and to come to the table with a respect to Turkey’s sovereign rights as well. “They cite the Lausanne Treaty. Yes, we also want to abide by the Lausanne Treaty. Greece is arming 16 out of 23 islands in the Aegean which must preserve their demilitarized status, according to Lausanne. Is talking about it a threat?” he asked.

There is no country, except for Greece, which claims a 10-mile air space while it has six-mile territorial waters, Akar said, adding, “We are trying to preserve our calmness against this kind of assertive claims by Greece.”

On a question about an ongoing discussion about the opening of the Hagia Sophia to worship, Akar said it is an internal issue of Turkey and no country, including Greece, can have a say in it.

“Greece, or no other country, can achieve anything by anti-Turkey and anti-Islam stances,” he stated.”

  22. Alabama shuts down FETÖ-linked charter school
    https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/alabama-shuts-down-feto-linked-charter-school-155515

“The U.S. state of Alabama shut down a controversial charter school on June 9 with links to FETÖ, two months before its opening, citing a failure to meet conditions.

The Alabama Public Charter School Commission voted to revoke Woodland Prep’s charter, initially approved in May 2018, for failing to meet conditions of pre-opening, a lack of adherence to generally accepted financial standards and failing to establish community support for the school, according to the local Al.com news outlet.

The first charter revoked by the commission has links to FETÖ leader Fetullah Gülen, a fugitive terrorist wanted by Turkey for his role behind a deadly military coup attempt in July 2016.

Gülen has been residing in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania for over two decades.

In a statement sent to the news outlet, Alabama Education Association President Sherry Tucker said the “AEA has consistently said we support good charter schools. Woodland Prep was not going to be a good charter school.”

AEA Associate Executive Director Theron Stokes hailed the decision.

”I hope this case serves as a warning shot to out-of-state corporate interests who may be looking to Alabama to make money in the charter school business,” Stokes said, accusing Woodland Prep of planning a ”money-grabbing scheme.”

In early August, the AEA filed a lawsuit against Soner Tar?m, a Texas-based member of FETÖ who was seeking to open Woodland Prep charter school in rural southwest Alabama.

According to one of the local reports back then, Tar?m was to make more than $300,000 if the charter plan went through, making him the highest-paid official in the poverty-stricken county.

FETÖ and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gülen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016 which left 251 people killed and nearly 2,200 injured in less than 12 hours.

Turkey also accuses FETÖ of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.

FETÖ has a considerable presence internationally, particularly in the U.S., including private schools which serve as a revenue stream for the terror group.”

  23. Ottoman era buildings misused in Greece
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/culture/ottoman-era-buildings-misused-in-greece/1872349

“Ottoman monuments in Greece are being misused in a major blow to the country’s historical heritage.

In the years following the independence of Greece, many Ottoman buildings were used as military prisons, cinemas, provincial offices, hostels and storage units.

Moreover, dozens of mosques were closed to worship and some were converted to churches.

Many abandoned buildings were ruined over time.

The Fethiye Mosque in Athens, built by Fatih Sultan Mehmet — also known as Mehmet the Conqueror– in 1458, is currently being used as an exhibition hall. The Tzisdaraki Mosque was also repurposed as a ceramics museum.

There are no signs left of other historical buildings which were registered in archives and yearbooks.

In Thessaloniki, the Hamza Bey Mosque, the oldest in the city, was closed due to some restoration work aiming to transform the building into a museum. The mosque, which was built in 1467, was previously used as a movie theatre.

Alaca ?maret Mosque in the same city, which was built in 1484, was also turned into a museum.

The Yeni Mosque, built in 1904, is closed to worship and its minaret was destroyed. At present, it serves as an exhibition hall of the municipality.

The White Tower, one of the most important Ottoman monuments in Thessaloniki, is promoted as a “Byzantine work” and a symbol of the city.

Mosques and historical buildings in many other Greek cities such as Ioannina, Crete, Larisa and Kavala are also suffering from the same fate.

Aslan Pasha Mosque in the city of Ioannina, Veli Pasha Mosque in the city of Rethymno, and Zincirli Mosque built in 16th century in Serres were also converted to museums.”

  24. 60 arrested in gangmaster probe, farm hands called ‘monkeys’ (7)

“Italian police on Wednesday arrested 60 people in a gangmaster probe seizing 14 farms in the southern Italian regions of Calabria and Basilicata.

Police said hundreds of mostly African migrant farm hands were paid a pittance to work 12-hour days by gangmasters who called them “monkeys”.

The farms seized were worth some eight million euros.

Some 300 finance guards took part in the operation, which ruling centrist Italia Viva Senator Ernesto Magorno said had dealt a “very hard blow” to gangmastering in the Mezzogiorno.

The commander of the tax police in Cosenza, Colonel Danilo Nastasi, said “we have rubbed out a social scourge”.”

  25. Unauthorized asylum seekers should be blocked at EU’s borders, says German interior minister
    https://rmx.news/article/article/unauthorized-asylum-seekers-should-be-blocked-at-eu-s-borders-says-german-interior-minister

“German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer says he wants to strengthen Europe’s border controls and expand the Frontex border patrol agency as Germany prepares itself to take over the EU’s presidency on July 1, according to an interview with Funke-Mediengruppe.

Seehofer, a member of the Christian Social Union that maintains an alliance with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, said that migrants should first be checked at the border to ascertain whether they are eligible for asylum before being permitted to enter the EU. Currently, migrants often make their way into Europe and have their applications reviewed while residing inside a host country.

If it turns out that people arriving at the EU’s external borders do not have the right to request asylum, then they must be “turned back”, the German politician said. He also calls for a substantial extension of the EU’s border protection agency Frontex during Germany’s six-month EU presidency.

Despite Seehofer’s call to refuse entry of unauthorized asylum seekers at the EU’s external border, his interview is short on a number of details. Detention centers along the Balkan route in countries like Bonsia and Serbia, which are outside the EU, would presumably have to house migrants while their applications are processed, but Seehofer does not address how these countries could shelter migrants while they await these results or what would happen to those who do make it into the EU through illegal means.

Groups and organizations advocating for migrants have already voiced strong criticism against Seehofer’s proposal.

“We are opposed to mass actions at the borders,” Gunter Burkhardt, managing director of Pro Asyl group, said. He noted that migrants without legal representation at the EU’s borders are not able to appeal against legally unjustified decisions.

In the same interview, Seehofer also directed criticism of the migration policies of the Visegrád Four countries of Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The German interior minister suggested that these countries should accept a compromise on accepting illegal migrants, a position the four countries have adamantly rejected. Seehofer said these countries could help through other means but did not specify if that would take the form of financial contributions or some other offer.

“If a country doesn’t do its part in taking in refugees, then it needs to support the system in other ways,” he said, calling for “flexible solidarity”.

As Remix previously reported, the European Commission is preparing to present its proposal on a new EU migration model and asylum strategy in the upcoming weeks, but seven EU countries, including Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia along with Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia, have reiterated that they are against compulsory migration quotas in a letter to the EU.

There are also others in Germany who say the current migration policy within the EU is broken and that Germans are growing resentful such as the interior minister of the German state of Saarland, Klaus Boullion, who said in an interview in March that even if migrants are deported from migrants centers in Germany, many of them simply come back — sometimes even up to five or six times. He also noted that the application process has a number of severe loopholes that require reform.

In 2019, nearly 300,000 migrants were granted asylum in the EU. Germany accepted 42 percent of the 154,175 asylum applications made in the country whereas Italy only accepted 10 percent.”
