Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. The House Judiciary Committee released a report Saturday in which it argued that a president may be impeached for “illegitimate motives” even if his actions are “legally permissible.”

The 52-page report, written by 20 members of the staff for the Democratic majority, attempts to provide a legal and constitutional basis for the Democrats’ ongoing effort to impeach the president.

The report states: “The question is not whether the President’s conduct could have resulted from permissible motives. It is whether the President’s real reasons, the ones in his mind at the time, were legitimate.”

That novel theory is only one of several questionable features of the report.

  2. ‘Islamophobia‘ Fuelling Terrorism: UN Chief

“Islamophobia” in parts of the world is fuelling terrorism, the head of the United Nations said on a visit to Saudi Arabia Sunday, as anti-immigrant sentiment rises in some countries.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made the comment to reporters after talks with Saudi King Salman, Crown Prince and Interior Minister Mohammed bin Nayef, and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

“One of the things that fuel terrorism is the expression in some parts of the world of Islamophobic feelings and Islamophobic policies and Islamophobic hate speeches,” Guterres said at a joint news conference with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

“This is sometimes the best support that Daesh can have to make its own propaganda,” Guterres said, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group of Sunni extremists in Syria and Iraq.

The jihadist group has also claimed deadly attacks in Saudi Arabia and in Europe.

Anti-immigration politicians including France‘s Marine Le Pen have seen their popularity rise after an influx to Europe of migrants, many of them Muslims fleeing wars in Syria and elsewhere.

US President Donald Trump issued an order in late January that denied entry to all refugees for 120 days.

It also blocked travellers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days. Refugees from Syria were blocked indefinitely.

But the order has faced obstacles and on Thursday an appellate court decided unanimously to maintain a block on Trump‘s order.

Syria‘s conflict has created 4.8 million refugees and killed more than 310,000 people since it began with anti-government protests in March 2011.

Guterres said “we will never be successful in fighting terrorism in Syria if an inclusive political solution is not found for the Syrian people.”

A new round of UN-sponsored peace talks is scheduled for February 20 in Geneva.

Guterres arrived in Saudi Arabia from Turkey and is to be in Dubai on Monday for the World Government Summit during his regional tour.

“Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh arrived in Turkey on Sunday, the Palestinian resistance group said.

The visit is the first leg in a foreign tour that will also take Haniyeh to Malaysia, Russia, Qatar, Lebanon, Mauritania, and Kuwait.

A Hamas source said Haniyeh and his accompanying delegation arrived in Istanbul at dawn.

The foreign tour is the first by Haniyeh since he was elected leader of the Palestinian resistance group in 2017.

A Palestinian source told Anadolu Agency on Saturday that Haniyeh had obtained permission from Egyptian authorities to conduct the tour during his recent visit to Cairo.

  4. Turkey repatriates foreign terrorist to Australia
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20191208-turkey-repatriates-foreign-terrorist-to-australia/

“Turkey extradited another foreign terrorist fighter to his home country, according to the Interior Ministry on Sunday, reports Anadolu Agency.

The ministry said in a written statement that a foreign terrorist fighter of Australian nationality was sent back to his country.

Turkey’s Interior Ministry said on November 9 that the country would begin extraditing captured Daesh terrorists to their home countries.

The issue of handling of Daesh members and their families detained in Syria – including foreign members of the terror group – has been controversial, with Turkey arguing foreign-born terrorists should be repatriated to their countries of origin, while several European countries have refused, saying the terrorists were denationalised.”

  5. British pair arrested over violent assault on bus that left Muslim schoolgirl hospitalised
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2019/12/8/british-pair-arrested-over-assault-that-hospitalised-muslim-schoolgirl

“British police announced the arrest of a 44-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman in connection with a shocking assault on a teenage Muslim schoolgirl on a bus in northern England, footage of which went viral on social media earlier this week.

A video of a woman repeatedly punching the 14-year-old and a man shouting racist slurs in a brawl that started inside the bus and spread onto the street was circulated on social media on Thursday.

The man also blocked other passengers attempting to stop the woman, who at one point in the video is seen on top of the girl, both of them on the ground.

Police said they were called to the Nursery Tavern in Sheffield in south Yorkshire, following “reports of racial abuse” and that “a man and a woman were asked to leave the premises.”

They added that shortly after there was a second report of “an altercation on a bus” travelling towards Sheffield city centre “between the same man and woman and other individuals on the bus.”

“All parties reportedly got off the bus on Ecclesall Road, where a 14-year-old girl was assaulted,” it added.

The girl was reportedly taken to hospital where she received treatment for a suspected fractured eye socket, according to local press.

A local school confirmed that the victim was one of its pupils.

“We are aware of an incident that has happened outside of school where it appears that some of our students have suffered abuse from members of the public,” said a spokesperson from Silverdale school, adding that it was supporting the students and families affected.

The victim’s sister posted on Facebook saying the family had been in A&E all night.

“She has a black eye and scratches on her face and neck. She needs to go back for another check as the doctors think she may have a fractured eye socket,” she wrote.

She added that the assault had left the students traumatised.

Islamophobia in the UK has risen sharply since the 2017 terror attacks in London and Manchester, according to the Muslim News.

In a 2018 report, Islamophobia watchdog Tell MAMA UK identified two significant spikes of anti-Muslim hate crimes in the country. The first occured after ‘Punish a Muslim Day’ letters sent were sent to Muslim homes, institutions, and places of work in March of that year.

A second and more significant uptick occurred in August after then-forign secretary and current Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote a newspaper column referring to veiled Muslim women as ‘letterboxes’ and ‘bank-robbers’. In the week following his article, anti-Muslim incidents increased by 375 percent.”

  9. Ankara slams Athens over PM’s remarks
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/ankara-slams-athens-over-pms-remarks-149607

“Ankara has urged Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to refrain from “fanciful ideologies” and embrace the principles of friendship and good neighborliness in regard to ties with Turkey, while rejecting the Greek premier’s statements on what he called “the Pontic genocide.”

“We reject the statements of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered at the ‘International Conference on the Crime of Genocide’ held in Athens on 6 December 2019. His statements concerning our past and present are devoid of any base, and its hostile tone is laden with lies and slander,” read a statement issued by Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hami Aksoy late on Dec 7.

Mitsokatis told the conference his government will bring what he called the “Pontic genocide” to the attention of the international community through the European Parliament.

Greece claims thousands of ethnic Greeks who had been living on the southern shores of the Black Sea were killed during strife that accompanied the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the creation of the modern Turkish state.

Turkey says the Greek communities wanted to take advantage of the fall of the Ottoman Empire through the occupation of its lands by the occupying forces, including Greece, France and the United Kingdom and sought to form their own state.

Aksoy, in his statement, recalled the actions of the Greek military in Anatolian lands: “Should the Greek leadership, which seems unable to overcome the then-Greek occupying forces being driven into the Aegean during the Turkish War of Independence, wish to face its past, the starting point ought to be the report of the Inter-Allied Commission of Inquiry, which recorded the war crimes of the Greek Army during its invasion of Anatolia.””

  10. Turkey urges Islamic cooperation to help needy Muslims
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-urges-islamic-cooperation-to-help-needy-muslims-149606

“Turkey’s president on Dec. 8 urged Muslim countries to work harder together to help millions of Muslims facing economic hardship.

“21 percent of the population of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) [countries], which means 350 million brothers and sisters, are trying to hold onto life at the poverty level,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the OIC High-Level Public and Private Investment Conference in Istanbul, the Turkish metropolis.

Erdogan stressed that the wealthiest Muslim country is 200 times richer than the poorest, but that if Muslims paid their zakat — a religious obligation to provide financial assistance to the poor — no Muslim country would suffer poverty.

Touching on the strength of Turkey’s economy, he said it leads the way in countries most ready to brace themselves from the impact of global trade wars and financial fluctuations.

He noted that last year Turkey was the sixth-most visited country in the world with 46 million tourists, and in 2019 aims to boost this number to 50 million.

Urging OIC member states to help Albania recover from last month’s powerful earthquake, he said: “I ask you to support out brother Albania by mobilizing all your means to treat their wounds.”

The 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Albania’s Adriatic coast on Nov. 26, killing 51 people and injuring more than 900.”
