Fast five for Aug. 15, 2019

1. World recoils in horror as smartphone maker accused of helping government snoops read encrypted texts, track device whereabouts

Comment In a report that has left lawmakers across the globe reeling, the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday claimed a smartphone maker helped government officials in Uganda access encrypted texts on a handset used by one of its own citizens, and track the device’s whereabouts.

It is, we think you will agree, virtually unheard of that a manufacturer of telecommunications gear would respond to a request from a country’s intelligence services.

It strongly implies that there is some kind of law that gives Uganda’s snoops the power to demand and obtain a target’s personal communications. Worse, it would appear that this surveillance was not made public – making the WSJ’s efforts to bring the truth to the world that much more impressive.

What is remarkable is that the WSJ’s investigative team was able to glean this information in a country in which it has but a single reporter. Despite the nation’s small impact on the world, or on US interests, the WSJ has seemingly taken an intense interest in Ugandan affairs, covering events in the African nation no less than four times in the past year.

Compare that to, say Hong Kong, which the WSJ has written four stories about in the last four hours, or Mexico which has had three dedicated stories in the past week.

4. Berlin police investigating attack on rabbi, 2nd in 2 weeks

Berlin police are investigating an attack on a rabbi, the second in as many weeks in the German capital.

Police said Thursday the victim, identifiable as Jewish by his attire, was pushed to the ground by two unidentified suspects while walking in the Charlottenburg neighborhood Tuesday afternoon. They say he was treated in a hospital for pain in his leg and head.

They didn’t identify the victim, but the daily Bild gave his name as Jan Aaron Hammel. The rabbi told Bild the men insulted him in Arabic before assaulting him.

Two weeks ago, another rabbi reported being spat upon and cursed at in Arabic by two men in a building in the same general neighborhood as he walked by.

Both attacks are being investigated as hate crimes.

5. Chinese drill at Hong Kong border

Thank you Johnny U., M., Richard, Wrath of Khan, ML., EB., and all who sent in materials. Today was a lot of editing of materials that are headed out there to the Twitter sphere and elsewhere but there is more headed this way tomorrow, including Barry Webb’s weekly discussion on Islam. This week he discusses polygamy in Islam, or “shirk” as they call it. And yes, they have a lot of it right there in the koran.

  1. No. 2 – Pedophilia, it’s criminal.

No. 3 -Gibralrar: MONEY, aka bribes.

No. 5 – China vs Hong Kong: It’s all show. China knows Trump is ready to push the nuclear economic tariff button on Hong Kong should the situation get out of hand. China is already in a serious economic downturn.

    • That they are, and if JE Dyer is right about the effect that the trouble at the HSBC bank is having on China they know that any more tariffs or sanctions and their entire nation is gone. If push comes to shove I don’t think Xi and his people are crazy enough to launch a suicidal revenge strike on the US.

  2. National Correspondent Shireen Qudosi speaks with One American News Network where she gets asked the provocative question, “Is Ilhan Omar practicing taqiyya?”

Taqiyya is branded as the stealth art of lying for Muslims. It is an often misunderstood and used as an attempt to smear all Muslims. Discover how Qudosi pivots the answer to focus on the real issue that all Americans can relate to — how Omar is gaslighting the American people.
