Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. FRANCE- French minister of ecology caught throwing lavish parties on taxpayer money

A senior official in France finds himself embroiled in controversy after claims he used public funds to throw lavish parties with vintage wine and exquisite meals. His attitude leaves a stain on French politics, analysts told RT.

    • Macron’s ex-No. 2 spent public funds on gold hairdryer: reports

French President Emmanuel Macron is taking heat over a hairdryer of gold.

Macron, who presided over France’s Bastille Day parade Saturday in Paris, is facing fallout from the lavish spending of his environment minister, Francois de Rugy, 45, according to a report.

The Sunday Times of London reported that de Rugy, formally the second most senior member of the government, and his wife, Severine Servat, a gossip journalist dubbed Lady Gala, spent $563 of public money on a Dyson hairdryer coated with gold leaf.

On top of that, the couple blew big bucks on lavish parties, including giant lobsters and $500 bottles of wine, a weekend apartment and $866 for an exercise bike, according to reports.

De Rugy has denied all wrongdoing, claiming he was the victim of a “grotesque” smear campaign, and did a TV interview in which he declared himself “furious with all these lies.”

Macron hasn’t weighed in yet but is said to be standing by his minister.

  3. More than 35 countries defend China over mass detention of Uighur Muslims in UN letter

State ambassadors praise Beijing’s ‘remarkable achievements in the field of human rights’

More than 30 countries have signed a letter defending China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region in response to Western criticism.

Ambassadors of 37 states from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America praised China’s “contribution to the international human rights cause” in the letter sent to the UN’s Human Rights Council on Friday.

The states, including prominent members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, said China had faced terrorism, separatism and religious extremism in Xinjiang.

But the signatories said China had restored peace and security in the region through counterterrorism measures and vocational training.

“We note with appreciation that human rights are respected and protected in China in the process of counterterrorism and de-radicalisation,” the letter read.

The letter was a riposte to the action taken by 22 mainly European countries at the start of the week.

They had urged China to halt the arbitrary detention of Xinjiang’s ethnic Uighurs and other minority groups, which academics and human rights groups estimate have swept around one million people into forced re-education.

China did not sign the letter submitted on Friday, but the text closely echoed the language of statements delivered by Chinese diplomats to the council on Thursday and Friday.

China condemned the “distortions” and “hypocrisy” of Western media and the countries criticising its actions in Xinjiang. It said that the region’s people “feel much better and much more happy and secure”.

The letter from the 37 countries lauded China’s “remarkable achievements in the field of human rights” and particularly its contribution to “protecting and promoting human rights through development”.

This is a theme China has advanced in separate resolutions to counterbalance the Western attention to political and civil rights.

Signers of the pro-China letter, including Russia, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela, also took the opportunity to repeat a position frequently expressed in the UN’s Human Rights Council opposing the “naming and shaming and publicly exerting pressure on other countries” by calling them to account for human rights violations.

    • China’s Retort Over Its Mass Detentions: Praise From Russia and Saudi Arabia

GENEVA — China fumed this week after 22 mostly Western countries rebuked its mass detention of Muslims in the restive Xinjiang region. On Friday the Chinese delivered their answer: praise from even more countries saying China has made Xinjiang safe and happy.

Ambassadors of 37 states from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America jointly signed a letter to the president of the United Nations Human Rights Council praising China’s “contribution to the international human rights cause.”

The states, including prominent members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, said China had faced terrorism, separatism and religious extremism in Xinjiang, the vast northwest region that is mainly Muslim. But through counterterrorism measures and vocational training, these states said, China had restored peace and security there.

“We note with appreciation that human rights are respected and protected in China in the process of counterterrorism and de-radicalization,” they said.

The letter constituted a blunt riposte to the action taken by 22 mainly European countries at the start of the week.

They had urged China to halt the arbitrary detention of Xinjiang’s ethnic Uighurs and other minority groups, which China scholars and human rights groups estimate have swept a million or more people into forced re-education.

China did not sign the letter submitted on Friday, but the text closely echoed the language of statements delivered by Chinese diplomats to the council on Thursday and Friday.

In those, it attacked the “distortions” and “hypocrisy” of Western media and the countries criticizing its actions in Xinjiang, insisting that the region’s people “feel much better and much more happy and secure.”

Chinese diplomats suggested that China’s experience in tackling terrorism could even be usefully shared with other countries.

The battle of letters underscored the growing arm-wrestle for influence in the United Nations and its human rights mechanisms between China, an increasingly confident and assertive power, and countries that have largely shaped the global discourse around human rights since World War II.

The letter from the 37 countries lauded China’s “remarkable achievements in the field of human rights” and particularly its contribution to “protecting and promoting human rights through development,” a theme China has advanced in separate resolutions to counterbalance the Western attention to political and civil rights.

Signers of the pro-China letter, including Russia, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela, also took the opportunity to repeat a position frequently expressed in the Human Rights Council opposing the “naming and shaming and publicly exerting pressure on other countries” by calling them to account for human rights violations.

The larger number of signatories supporting China was a sign of Beijing’s growing global political and economic leverage, analysts monitoring the council said, but also suggested uneasiness at the level of scrutiny it is facing.

“It’s a sign of desperation that a country feels the need to praise itself,” said John Fisher, the Geneva director for Human Rights Watch. “The fact that China can arm-twist delegations into supporting them is nothing new. The fact that other states stood up to it on Xinjiang is an important step forward.”

The pro-China letter came at the end of a Human Rights Council session punctuated by calls for investigation of the part played by Saudi Arabia’s leaders in the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi and an investigation into President Rodrigo Duterte’s violent drug war in the Philippines.

“If China feels it can deflect scrutiny of what is happening in Xinjiang it is mistaken,” Mr. Fisher said.

    • 22 countries signed an ‘unprecedented’ letter condemning China’s oppression of Muslims. But none of them come from the Islamic world.

22 countries wrote a joint letter on Wednesday condemning Beijing’s oppression of the Uighurs, a Muslim minority living in western China.

China has installed an unparalleled 21st century police state in the Xinjiang region, where Uighurs are heavily surveilled and detained en masse.

None of the countries that signed the condemnation were from the Islamic world.

Islamic countries have increasingly shied away from criticizing China over Xinjiang, for reasons including the fear of China’s economic vengeance.

22 countries have banded together to condemn China’s oppression of its Muslim minority, in what activists called an “unprecedented move.” But Muslim countries were conspicuously absent from the statement as the Islamic world continues to turn a blind eye.

In the Wednesday letter, written by UN Human Rights Council member states, the signatories called on China to “refrain from the arbitrary detention and restrictions on freedom of movement of Uighurs, and other Muslim and minority communities in Xinjiang.”

Those 22 signatories are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.

The US did not sign the letter, having quit the Human Rights Council last year, calling it “hypocritical and self-serving.”

The Uighurs are a mostly-Muslim ethnic minority group living in Xinjiang, western China. Beijing claims the entire group is a threat to national security, and has detained up to 1.5 million of them in prison-like camps where people are reportedly physically and psychologically tortured.

Xinjiang residents are frequently arrested or detained for so-called “infractions” including communicating with people outside the region and exhibiting Muslim markers, like a beard or long skirts.

  7. New Syphilis Cases Now Outnumber HIV Across Europe (breitbart, Jul 14, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/07/14/new-syphilis-cases-now-outnumber-hiv-across-europe/

“A new report from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has shown a dramatic increase in new cases of syphilis across Europe, outnumbering new cases of HIV.

The new ECDC report looked at the cases of syphilis reported across 30 countries between 2007 and 2017 and found the number of new cases had dramatically increased by 70 per cent since 2010 to a record 33,189, Sächsische Zeitung reports.

The Stockholm-based group noted that new cases of the sexually transmitted disease are now more common than HIV, stating that there were 25,353 new cases of HIV in 2017, down from more than 31,000 in 2016.

Head of the ECDC program for HIV and venereal diseases, Andrew Amato-Gauci, commented on the new figures saying, “The growth in the number of syphilis infections we see in Europe and other countries around the world is the result of several factors such as sex without a condom and with multiple sexual partners, combined with less fear of getting HIV.”

In several countries, including Britain, Germany, Iceland, and Ireland, the number of syphilis cases has more than doubled, with only two countries, Romania and Estonia, reporting a decline in new cases.

Men between the ages of 25 and 34 are the most prone to become infected with the disease, with the study citing homosexual men as being at particular risk.

The organisation Deutsche Aidshilfe attributes the increase in syphilis cases to a number of factors, including a decline in condom use due to improvements in HIV treatments along with symptoms of the disease sometimes taking weeks to appear, or not appearing at all.

Syphilis is not the only STD to see an increase in Europe. Last year, the Swedish Public Health Authority revealed that the country had seen a record-breaking rise in cases of gonorrhoea in 2017, reversing a trend that almost eliminated the disease.

Other diseases long thought either eradicated or completely foreign to Europe, have also seen increases in cases, largely due to the migrant crisis.”

“Syrian state media say a militant attack has shut down a gas pipeline in the country’s center.

The SANA news agency said Sunday that technical teams are working to fix the pipeline that runs through the central Homs province, linking the Shaer fields to the Ebla processing plant. It did not elaborate on the extent of the damage or the nature of the attack.

The agency says the pipeline carries about 2.5 million cubic meters of gas to the processing plant and onward to power stations.

Islamic State militants briefly seized the Shaer fields in 2014 and 2016 before pro-government forces recaptured them in heavy fighting. Today much of Syria’s oil fields and infrastructure are held by U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led forces in the east.”

The French Revolution turned into a Liberal Revolution that sought to find new rights for the people. YouTube has removed a video of Tommy Robinson addressing his supporters from this reporter’s channel, claiming that it violates their “hate speech policy.”

The video was pre-recorded to be released in the event that he went back to prison.

On Thursday, Robinson was sentenced to six months in prison for three counts of contempt of court. There can be no argument that the video wasn’t newsworthy.

In the video, Robinson discusses his case as well as grooming gangs and the importance of speaking up for the victims. When the sentence was handed down, I published the video to my channel to be able to embed it in a story. It was unlisted and could only be viewed by people with a direct link.

  13. Trump ‘is set upon an act of diplomatic vandalism’: Sir Kim Darroch’s cables describe how Boris failed to save Iran deal, claim the President was against it for ‘personality reasons’ and suggest splits among White House advisors

Standing in front of Corinthian columns at the US Department of State, Boris Johnson vigorously pumped the hand of his American counterpart Mike Pompeo and gave a thumbs-up to reporters.

But as the Foreign Secretary turned on his heels after the photocall, he knew that his hastily arranged diplomatic mission to Washington was on the brink of failure.

It was May 7, 2018, and Mr Johnson had been hurriedly dispatched to make a last-ditch plea to President Donald Trump not to abandon a nuclear deal with Iran, regarded by many experts as critical to prevent the regime from building an atomic bomb.

During a frantic 26 hours of meetings, Mr Johnson met all the key ‘Trump Whisperers’ – those advisers with the ear of America’s unpredictable leader. It became clear, however, that despite the ‘special relationship’ between Britain and the US, Mr Johnson was not going to change the President’s mind.

  15. the gateway pundit – Former CIA Agent Is Grateful for President Trump after Prior Administrations and CIA Directors Ignored Her Pleas for Help in an Italian Court

Former President Obama and his CIA Director John Brennan ignored a European CIA agent’s pleas for help and left her to rot in an Italian prison. Lucky for her, Donald Trump was elected President. After the election, her situation was aided and abetted by the Trump Administration for which she is grateful.

A few days before the President Trump inauguration, in January, 2017, Tucker Carlson at FOX News did a piece on CIA case officer Ms. Sabrina De Sousa.

Sabrina De Sousa, a former CIA case officer, was detained Monday in Portugal and is awaiting extradition to Italy and four years in prison for the 2003 abduction of a suspected terrorist living in Milan.

The operation was part of the CIA’s “extraordinary rendition” program — and one De Sousa says she was not involved in.

If extradited as planned, De Sousa, who no longer works for the agency, will be the first CIA officer and U.S. diplomat imprisoned over the controversial rendition program.

De Sousa, 61, was working in Milan as an undercover CIA officer in 2003 when U.S. and Italian intelligence agents abducted radical Egyptian cleric Osama Mustapha Hassan Nasr, also known as Abu Omar, and transported him to his native Egypt for interrogation.

Phone records obtained by Italian prosecutors corroborated De Sousa’s claim that she was some 130 miles away in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, chaperoning her son’s school ski trip, on the day Omar was abducted. Still, Italy brought “broad charges” against her for a plot she says she had no direct part in.

The abduction was part of the controversial program, implemented under President George W. Bush, and entailed taking terror suspects to countries where torture is allowed. Omar — who turned out to be a “nobody,” according to De Sousa — was held at an American military base in Germany before being flown to Cairo, Egypt, where he says he was tortured.

He was soon released from prison for lack of prosecutable evidence against him.

In 2009, De Sousa, along with 25 other Americans, was convicted in absentia on kidnapping and other charges related to the abduction. Several were since pardoned and not one has done time in prison. The Italians also convicted Omar in absentia of “criminal association for the purposes of international terrorism” and sentenced him to six years in prison.

De Sousa described herself as a “scapegoat” for a program authorized by officials at the highest levels of U.S. government.

The former agent, who spent the night in a women’s prison near Lisbon after a Portuguese court ordered police to extradite her, said she had hoped President Trump would intervene on her behalf.

De Sousa believes that one of the reasons Obama’s CIA didn’t intervene in her case was due to self preservation. They must have thought that “sacrificing the rank and file would divert attention from the leadership.”

In efforts to exonerate herself, De Sousa wrote numerous individuals in Washington over the years including letters from Human Rights First on her behalf –

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Tens of thousands rallied in a large Hong Kong suburb on Sunday, driven by abiding anger at the government’s handling of an extradition bill that has revived fears of China tightening its grip over the former British colony and eroding its freedoms.

Millions have taken to the streets over the past month in some of the largest and most violent protests in decades over an extradition bill that would allow people to be sent to mainland China for trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party.

  18. Richard: Read the entire article, it is very informative and interesting. and adds a possible motive for the hatred for Trump that is held by so many of the self proclaimed elite.

Also pay close attention to the timing of the new indictment, the lack of bail, the Judge w ho is hearing the trial and the ranks of the prosecution team and of the defense team. There are a lot of implication that are helping Trump and hurting the Dems, and there is probably a lot more we haven’t heard that will implicate a lot more people.

Epstein accusers’ attorney makes point about Trump that may be key to quite a lot
    By J.E. Dyer July 14, 2019

After Jeffrey Epstein was arrested and charged in federal court with underage sex trafficking this past week, the mainstream media began a predictable campaign to tie Epstein to Trump.

The rightosphere, equally predictably, posted articles pointing out Epstein’s closer relationship with Bill Clinton, which reportedly included activities with the Clinton Foundation. Flight logs also show multiple occasions on which Clinton traveled on Epstein’s so-called “Lolita express” flights. The number of occasions could be as few as four; some reporting claims more than two dozen.

As LU noted on Wednesday, Internet sleuths have reported that photos of Bill Clinton with Epstein are being scrubbed from the Web, while photos of Trump and Epstein attending the same events have been featured by the MSM – and are even being faked.

Trump’s supporters have highlighted reporting that Epstein was banned from Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort years ago, allegedly after Epstein made inappropriate advances to the 18-year-old daughter of a client.

All of this is unfolding in the context of an Epstein case that most observers think could affect a lot of “very connected” people, from politicians to industry executives and the media.

It’s the latter point that makes for the interest of a lawyer’s comments from December 2018, when Epstein settled a lawsuit with accusers represented by Bradley Edwards of Edwards Pottinger LLC. The suit stemmed from the plea agreement Epstein had reached with the state of Florida in 2008 on the original criminal charges brought against him, involving sex with minors (girls of mostly 14 to 15 years old).

Edwards represented plaintiffs in 2009 who filed suit to obtain a judgment against Epstein, when it became clear he would not have to meet even the startlingly lenient terms of that plea agreement. Officials in both Florida and New York seem to be implicated in letting Epstein off the hook. And the federal government, which reportedly had a 50-odd-page charge list drafted against Epstein, didn’t weigh in to take things further.

The usual reporting at the New York Times and other mainstream media has, as I said, been at pains to link Epstein to Trump. But those outlets are not suggesting that Democrats will not be affected.

The sense seems to be a chary one, that Epstein could bring down a lot of people. The MSM haven’t been touting Democrats or any other group as having clean hands. They’ve just been emphasizing the theme about “a lot of people,” alongside the drumbeat about Trump.*

So the passage in this video of an interview with Derrick Broze of The Conscious Resistance, from December 2018, is very interesting, and possibly very informative. It starts about 4:55.

Here is a transcript of attorney Bradley Edwards’s comments on Trump (courtesy Zero Hedge https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-07-07/trump-was-only-one-help-prosecutor-2009-epstein-case )

The only thing that I can say about President Trump is that he is the only person who, in 2009 when I served a lot of subpoenas on a lot of people, or at least gave notice to some pretty connected people, that I want to talk to them, is the only person who picked up the phone and said, let’s just talk. I’ll give you as much time as you want. I’ll tell you what you need to know, and was very helpful, in the information that he gave, and gave no indication whatsoever that he was involved in anything untoward whatsoever, but had good information. That checked out and that helped us and we didn’t have to take a deposition of him in 2009.

Most of the coverage of this video has focused on the point that Trump’s helpfulness was an indication that he had little to do with Epstein, and simply chose to be a good citizen.

But when there’s thought to be a huge network of connections and influence on the order of the Epstein scandal, the real point may be more than that. It may be a central key to why the East coast “elite” hate Trump so much, and have been so obsessively determined to bring him down. There’s reason to believe Trump has no motive to cover up Epstein’s dealings. His attorney general now has teeth and has acted fearlessly so far. And not only can Trump not be tarred with complicity in whatever the Epstein crimes may be; he looks like the one guy who in 2009 was free to talk — and willing to.

    https://libertyunyielding.com/2019/07/14/epstein-accusers-attorney-makes-point-about-trump-that-may-be-key-to-quite-a-lot/

    • The reporter makes it clear that he is hoping he can get a lot of dirt on Trump. The title of his channel says he doesn’t like Trump and probably doesn’t like conservatives so it is interesting that he left the answer that pretty much cleared Trump of wrong doing and established another motive for the self proclaimed elite to hate him in video.

The self proclaimed elite (in both parties) are fairly close and protect each other, Trump was willing to help bring down Epstein which is going to cause a lot of damage to the so called elite. If they aren’t personally invovled they know people who are and don’t want to see them brought down.

The Trump revolution is continuing and is bringing down a lot of the elite that have been looting the national treasury (thru sweetheart deals that often don’t require any action to earn the money) and is returning control of the US to the legitimate voters.

Stay tuned for more details in the future.

  19. Former Greek finance minister Socialist Varoufakis in fracas with French police officer at Paris airport

GREEK ECONOMIST AND former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has accused French police of “violent” behaviour over a passport check at Paris’ main airport.

Varoufakis told AFP he had just landed at Charles de Gaulle airport on a flight from Athens when a police officer standing near the plane ramp asked to see his passport.

Varoufakis said he complied, but claims the officer then stuck his elbows out as he tried to pass.

“The moment our elbows touched, he reacted violently,” the economist said.

“(He) manhandled me, using physical violence,” Varoufakis told AFP, adding that the officer pushed him, grabbed his passport and told him to stand against the wall.

According to a source with knowledge of the incident, a frontier police officer had been sent to check passports just outside the aircraft for passengers who boarded the Aegean Airlines flight in Athens, after it originally took off from Cairo.

The source said Varoufakis had tried to “barge” through and “adopted a threatening attitude”.

In a video of the scene, apparently taken by a passenger, Varoufakis tells the officer: “You are a disgrace to the French nation… you blocked my way and then pushed me.”

“I am not following you… I do not trust you. You are violent, and you are rude. I want to speak to a superior officer,” he says, irately pacing up and down the corridor.

“You are a problematic member of the police force. A disgrace to your nation. So, bring somebody else here,” he says.

Two additional superior officers had to be summoned before Varoufakis’ passport was eventually returned.

“I am formally requesting a formal apology from the French police,” he said.

One of the officers said he also plans to lodge a complaint against Varoufakis.

Airport officials could not immediately be reached for comment today.

A former finance minister under leftist prime minister Alexis Tsipras in 2015, Varoufakis last week became a member of Greece’s parliament, one of nine lawmakers elected by his anti-austerity MeRA25 party in general elections.

  21. Donald Trump Tells Ilhan Omar, AOC Go Fix Their ‘Broken, Crime Infested’ Countries of Origin (sputnniknews, Jul 14, 2019)

“The US president launched a Twitter offensive against the Democrat freshman congresswomen, who share a passion for heated social media rants with him and often choose Donald Trump and his policies as a target for their criticism. However, Nancy Pelosi also got a fair share of the online roasting from the president.

US President Donald Trump has lashed out at the “progressive” Democrat Congresswomen for “loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” as he put it on Twitter.

Although he did not call them out by name, Trump noted that these women “originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world,” apparently hinting at freshmen Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, who repeatedly criticised Trump for his stance on immigration, women’s rights and environmental problems.

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough,” the POTUS remarked.

However, he also took aim at the House Speaker and one of the Democrats’ leaders, Nancy Pelosi, saying she “would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements.”

His rant amassed almost 200K likes and over 30K comments, many of which are critical. Some immediately accused him of being racist and spreading hate speech, calling on Twitter to suspend his account…”

  27. BREITBART – Man Who Raped 1-Year-Old Daughter, Posted Video of Attack on Dark Web Sentenced to 70 Years

A man who was accused of raping his one-year-old daughter and posting the video on the dark web for pedophiles has been sentenced to a 70-year prison term.

Bradenton, Florida, resident James Lockhart, 31, was handed the maximum sentence for his crimes on July 12 after pleading guilty to producing child pornography and other charges, the Daily Mail reported.

Lockhart, a former paramedic for the City of Bradenton, was arrested last October when a federal investigation pinpointed his home as the location that the horrendous video was uploaded to the Internet.

Using the names “StrangeWood” and “HardWood,” the convict had uploaded a series of four videos showing him sexually molesting his screaming child. Officials said the convict and the child in the video were identified by his ex-wife.

Investigators also said that Lockhart bragged about sexually abusing another child.

“Lockhart’s child pornography collection included infants and sadomasochistic and violent conduct,” Homeland Security agent Michael B. Cochran said in a statement. “This deviant committed the most horrible atrocities imaginable to a one-year-old child. HSI’s national and international partnerships have helped ensure that this predator will never again harm a child.”

During the investigation, which was part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Childhood,” officials found over 4,000 child porn images in his possession as well as multiple videos.

  28. Kuwait extradites Brotherhood fugitives to Egypt (gulfnews, Jul 14, 2019)
    https://gulfnews.com/world/mena/kuwait-extradites-brotherhood-fugitives-to-egypt-1.65218659

“Kuwait has extradited to Egypt eight wanted fugitives linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai reported on Sunday.

The eight, all Egyptians, were arrested earlier this week by Kuwaiti authorities after they had been sentenced to jail terms in the homeland on terrorism-related charges.

They were handed over to Cairo on Saturday in two groups in response to a request from Egyptian authorities under extradition pacts between the two countries, the paper said.

“Those arrested constituted an important part of financing sources of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt,” Al Rai quoted security sources as saying.

They were given jail terms varying from five to 15 years after they were tried in absentia in Egypt in cases related to involvement in terrorism and acts of rioting Egypt experienced following security forces’ dispersal of a Brotherhood protest camp in Cairo in August 2013, the sources added.

One key case is related to the 2015 assassination of Egypt’s then chief prosecutor Hesham Barakat.

Those arrested in Kuwait are aged between 32 to 56. The head of the group in Kuwait was identified as Abu Bakr Al Fayoumi, who was among the eight.

Al Fayoumi, 36, had encouraged other Brotherhood followers, facing security threats in Egypt, to come to Kuwait, calling it a “safe haven,” the sources said.

Five others, also wanted in Egypt, were able to leave Kuwait for Qatar and Turkey, which are key backers of the Brotherhood, according to the same sources.

Egypt has seen a spate of militant attacks since the army’s mid-2013 overthrow of late president Mohammad Mursi, a senior Brotherhood official, following enormous street protests against his rule.

Later that year, Egyptian authorities designated the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation.”

“The U.S. Department of Defense has warned of continued clash between the Afghan and Pakistani forces along the Line of Durand.

Pentagon warned regarding the likely clashes in its latest reports titled Enhancing Security and Stability in Afghanistan.

The report said “The Afghanistan-Pakistan border region remains a sanctuary for various groups, including the Taliban and its component Haqqani Network (HQN), al-Qa’ida core (AQ), al-Qa’ida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS-K, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU).”

The report further added “Terrorist sanctuaries on both sides of the border present security challenges for Afghanistan and Pakistan and pose a threat to regional security and stability.”

Furthermore, Pentagon said Afghan security forces likely will continue to clash with Pakistani forces along the border.

The report also added that “This strains limited resources and heightens regional tensions. Senior leaders of both countries accuse the other of using their security agencies to support militant groups that launch cross border attacks.”

Meanwhile, Pentagon said despite an escalating border skirmish in early May 2019, President Ghani and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan were effectively able to de-escalate the situation peacefully.

Pentagon also added that Afghanistan faces multiple internal threats, each of which receives significant support from external actors.

According to Pentagon report, the primary threat to Afghan stability is the Taliban, which receives sanctuary and support from many external actors.”

  32. ‘Disgusting dumpsters’: Rome garbage crisis sparks health fears (thelocal, Jul 14, 2019)
    https://www.thelocal.it/20190713/disgusting-dumpsters-rome-garbage-crisis-sparks-health-fears

“Landfills in flames and rats feasting on waste in the streets have sparked health fears in Rome, as doctors warn families to steer clear of disease-ridden curbside garbage and locals launch a disgusting dumpster contest online.

Crowds of summer tourists are forced to navigate overflowing bins in the stifling heat, as the pungent perfume of neglected garbage draws scavenging animals and the threat of disease to the Eternal City and locals fume over the city’s refuse management.

Rome’s chief physician Antonio Magi has issued a “hygiene alert”, telling AFP this could be upgraded to a health warning, with disease spread through the faeces of insects and animals banqueting on rotting waste. His warning prompted local prosecutors to open an investigation this week into the city’s refuse collection.

In the meantime, furious Rome residents have launched a contest on Twitter to find the most fetid dustbins.

Discarded pizza boxes or the remains of spaghetti lunches and fruit rinds draw opportunistic seagulls, rats and even wild boars to the streets of Rome, with wolves also spotted closer to the city’s outskirts than ever before.

Adding to the indignation of Rome residents is the steep price they are paying for their garbage to rot in the streets.

The city spent more than 597 euros ($670) per inhabitant on household waste treatment in 2017 — by far the highest in the country, ahead of Venice (353 euros) and Florence (266 euros), according to a report by the Openpolis Foundation.

But the city lacks infrastructure: of its three main landfills, one has closed and the others were ravaged by fire in recent months.

And two biological treatment sites have reduced their activities for maintenance work.

    ‘Degradation and abandonment’

Some residents make matters worse by simply dumping their old mattresses, fridges and sofas next to garbage bins.

But local Salvatore Orlando, 50, told AFP the council was entirely to blame.

“Of course it’s the mayor’s fault. You certainly can’t blame the citizens,” he said. “They produce waste, they have to throw it away, and the public services have to collect it. It’s simple. We pay taxes for it”.

Rome’s mayor and the president of the Lazio region both assured Italy’s environment minister Tuesday that the crisis would be resolved “within 15 days”.

But to do so, more of the city’s 5,000 tons of daily waste will have to be sent for incineration elsewhere.

“Everyone complains about waste but no one wants an incinerator. Instead, we take the waste abroad, to Austria, to Germany!”, another aggrieved resident said, declining to give his name.

Even Pope Francis has commented on the decline, lamenting in June Rome’s “degradation and abandonment”.

Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, head of the far-right League, has jumped on the chance to use the crisis as a political weapon against mayor Virginia Raggi, who hails from the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S).

The stench and sticky pavements have given him ammunition ahead of the next municipal elections, scheduled for 2021. But in a city where key sectors are riddled with inefficiency and corruption, residents will wonder whether Salvini has a magic recipe for resolving a situation that has stumped parties over the years across the political spectrum.

In the meantime, rubbish is just one more daily challenge in a city with countless potholes, trees that topple at the first gust of wind and buses that catch fire — if their engines start at all.”

“A total of 141 migrants from the sub-Sahara region were rescued at sea on Saturday between Spain and Morocco, from a variety of makeshift vessels, the Spanish maritime rescue service said.

Two boats carrying 86 people, one of which was already beginning to sink, were recovered in the Alboran Sea, the stretch of the Mediterranean between the two countries, a spokesman for the service told AFP.

Some of the people were already in the water by the time the rescuers arrived, but everyone was rescued, he said, adding that among the 86 were 14 women and three children.

Further west, in the Straits of Gibraltar, rescue boats picked up three men in a kayak, and another 52 people — including 14 women — in a dinghy.

Around 11,000 migrants have arrived in Spain by sea since the beginning of the year and 203 people have died attempting the crossing from north Africa, according to the latest figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), issued on Wednesday.

Over the same period in the Mediterranean as a whole, 682 have died or are missing attempting the crossing from northern Africa, while 31,600 migrants have made it to Europe, according to the IOM.”
