Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Down drove my father’s hammer
With the power of a god
    Another nail to our work
    Teaching me my job.
“Just let it go,” he said and smiled
    “–Steer it and you’ll miss,
A basic guide is all she needs
–Not every muscle in your arm.”
He handed me his hammer, then,
And touched me on my shoulder
Such loving faith that I thus felt
Still deeper than that nail drilled
Right through the Earth to China
I felt its weight in my young hand
    I felt some holy ghost
Its steel forged by he, and his
    Dear father come before
Down came my father’s hammer, then
Passed now to me to swing
    Squarely on the nail’s head
    We heard the steel ring
“Swing it not with anger, son,
Nor in some false hot pride,
Just swing it with the love you give
    To your son
    Bye and bye.

  2. Yemeni officials say rebels kill 10 in attacks in Hodeida (abcnews, Jul 7, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/yemeni-officials-rebels-kill-10-attacks-hodeida-64175375

“Yemeni officials and witnesses say rebel attacks have killed at least 10 pro-government forces in the key port city of Hodeida.

They say the clashes, which flared up Wednesday, wounded at least seven civilians when shells hit their residential areas in the contested Red Sea city.

The officials demanded anonymity because they weren’t authorized to brief reporters. Witnesses asked for anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Yemen’s internationally recognized government accused the Houthi rebels of using U.N. facilities in Hodeida to attack its forces. It says the attack killed at least 10 troops, and wounded 20 others.

The fighting came over two months after the Houthis claimed withdrawal from the port city of Hodeida, a move criticized by the government as a “farce.””

  3. Salvini to Amend Law to Confiscate Ships from Migrant Transport NGOs (breitbart, Jul 7, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/07/07/salvini-to-amend-law-to-remove-ships-from-italian-migrant-transport-ngo/

“Populist Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini is said to be reworking the security and migration decree to allow the government to confiscate ships flying under the Italian flag.
The new proposal comes as Italian migrant transport NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans announced it would be putting another vessel to sea following the confiscation of the Mare Jonio in May.

According to a report from Italian newspaper Il Giornale, Salvini directed those working on the security decree to “prepare every useful measure to prevent what happened in the last few weeks from being repeated”.

The statement is a clear reference to the situation regarding the NGO Sea-Watch and the activities of Sea Watch-3 Captain Carola Rackete, who stormed her way through the Italian territorial water blockade and rammed a patrol boat in order to land migrants against the wishes of Italian authorities.

The amendment would be to Article 2 of the decree which currently only applies to ships flying the flags of other countries, as those with Italian flags have full rights to enter Italian territory.

The new law would, therefore, extend the confiscation of vessels facilitating illegal migration to those flying the Italian flag, as well.

Many on the Italian left have not only criticised the security decree but have vowed to oppose it.

According to members of the national-conservative Brothers of Italy (FdI), Tuscany governor Enrico Rossi has passed a new law to circumvent the decree by giving migrants 600 to 1,000 euros a month.

The two FdI members slammed Rossi, saying: “Not only does he disobey the law, but he does so using public money. In this way, Tuscany and the regions that will do the same will become the free port for all illegal immigrants in Italy.”

According to local councillor Serena Spinelli, the new laws plan to counteract Salvini’s security decree which abolished the so-called humanitarian residency permit.

“The Tuscan law reaffirms instead that there are services necessary to ensure respect for fundamental rights, recognised to every person on the basis of the constitution and international standards,” Spinelli insisted.”

  4. German Election Committee Bans Two-Thirds of Populist Candidates From Regional Election (breitbart, Jul 7, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/07/07/german-election-committee-bans-two-thirds-of-populist-candidates-from-regional-election/

“The Saxony election committee has refused to allow two-thirds of the candidates of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to run in this year’s regional election, citing technical discrepancies.

Only two months before the region of Saxony goes to the polls, the region’s election committee has decided that the populist AfD will only be allowed to run 18 of their 61 candidates in what is seen as a massive blow to the party, which is tied for first place in the region in many polls, Tagesspiegel reports.

The committee highlighted the fact that AfD held party congresses on two separate occasions to pick their list of candidates, using two separate election methods.

This, according to the committee, meant that only the first party congress, which saw 18 candidates selected, was actually valid.

The ruling is a massive blow to the party which was expected to gain as many as 30 seats in the 120-seat chamber, bringing into question whether the party will be able to fill the seats.

The only way the party will be able to mitigate the effect of the ruling will be to win direct mandates which are secured seats. Polling websites claim the party could potentially win between 27 and 30 direct mandates but could still be left with vacant seats.

State chairman of the AfD in Saxony, Jörg Urban labelled the move a “conspiracy” by the establishment saying the other parties were attempting to “weaken the strongest political competitor in the regional elections in Saxony.”

The Saxony branch of the AfD say they will appeal the committee decision but such an appeal will only be allowed to take place after the election.

While the AfD has seen election gains election after election and sits in the German parliament as the official opposition, sections of the party were put under domestic surveillance earlier this year.

It was even alleged that the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) had used information gathered by the far-left extremist Antifa group to build their case for spying on members of the party.

AfD branches and members have also been targetted by far-left extremists several times this year, including the firebombing of a party office in Döbeln and the alleged attempted assassination of Bremen party chair Frank Magnitz.”

  5. Judges rule that Romanian criminal cannot be deported under EU law (telegraph, Jul 7, 2019)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/07/07/judges-rule-romanian-criminal-cannot-deported-eu-law/

“A Romanian national who carried out a string of serious criminal offences can’t be deported because he is protected by EU law.

Denis Viscu, 20, arrived in the UK in 2007 with his family and between July 2014 and March 2017 received 14 convictions for 20 offences including robbery and knife possession.

But when the Home Office tried to deport him they were blocked by judges who held that under EU law he had rights to enhanced protection under the EU Citizens’ Directive as he had lived in the UK for five years.

During his legal fight to stay in the UK Viscu was further convicted of four more offences, including possession of a knife in a public place, burglary and possession of a Class A drug and was sentenced to a total of 4 ½ years detention in a young offenders institution.

In September 2017, the Home Office tried to deport Viscu because he was a ‘persistent offender’.

Government lawyers argued that although Viscu had lived in the United Kingdom since 2007 he was not entitled to enhanced protection under EU law because the time he had spent in custody ‘broke the continuity of lawful residence’.

But a judge held that, since Viscu was a juvenile he could not be sentenced to imprisonment and so his residence in the United Kingdom had been ‘continuous and uninterrupted’ availing him of special EU protection.

Under Chapter IV of the Citizens’ Directive, ‘Union citizens who have resided legally for a continuous period of five years in the host Member State shall have the right of permanent residence there.’

A member state can only expel an EU resident where they have strong grounds to believe their presence poses a risk to the public.

But the EU has added the caveat that ‘previous criminal convictions shall not in themselves constitute grounds for’ denying an EU citizen their right of residency.

Now the Court of Appeal has ordered that the case be reheard in full.

Lord Justice Underhill, sitting with two Court of Appeal judges, said the Home Secretary will be able to make a case for deportation on public policy and public security grounds.

The judge said: “Although the jurisprudence refers most frequently to “imprisonment” rather than “custodial sentence” I am quite satisfied that the rationale for the principle that, in general, a custodial sentence is indicative of a rejection of societal values and a severing of integrative links so as to interrupt the required continuity of residence, is equally applicable to sentences of detention in a YOI as it is to imprisonment.

“This is because, on a proper analysis, it is not the sentence which indicates rejection of societal values but the offending which is sufficiently serious to warrant a custodial sentence whether of imprisonment or some other form of detention.””

  9. UK Intelligence Pushes for “Ghost Protocol” to Give State Spies Access to Private Chats – Reports (sputniknews, Jul 7, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201907071076175772-uk-intelligence-pushes-for-ghost-protocol-to-give-state-spies-access-to-private-chats—reports/

“UK spy agency MI5 and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) intelligence gathering unit earlier admitted in court that they act illegally in their use of bulk data.

GCHQ has proposed tech companies grant state spies access to encrypted chats and calls as part of new surveillance measures, dubbed the “ghost protocol”, reports the Guardian.

The new measure would allow a government agent to “sit in” on seemingly secure private conversations unbeknown to the participants.

The demand for a “ghost protocol” was defended by a GCHQ spokesmen with the argument that such a method would uphold security and privacy of encrypted communication, since encryption itself would not be broken.

In what is deemed a “serious threat” to digital security and human rights, the proposed measure has been condemned by over 50 companies, organisations and security experts, who signed an open letter on the issue addressed to the UK government.

Co-authored by Google, Apple, WhatsApp, Microsoft, Liberty, Privacy International and others, it explains that “to achieve this result, their proposal requires two changes to systems that would seriously undermine user security and trust.”

The first change, they write, is requiring service providers to secretly inject a new public key into a conversation. Thus, what started out as a two-way conversation is transformed into a group chat with the government or secret government participant added.

For this to be feasible, a second change would be required: messaging apps, service providers, and operating systems would have to “change their software so that it would change the encryption schemes used, and/or mislead users by suppressing the notifications that routinely appear when a new communicant joins a chat.”

The news comes as earlier in June MI5 and GCHQ were forced to admit in court they act illegally in their use of bulk data, gathered by eavesdropping on millions of innocent people.

The admissions were made in the wake of a court case brought by civil rights organisation Liberty. In its latest challenge to the 2016 Investigatory Powers Act, Liberty argued that government surveillance practices breach human rights law.

The court was told that what has been dubbed the “snooper’s charter” permits interfering with computers, mobiles, and other devices in a way that amounts to an invasion of individuals’ privacy.

Responding to the legal action, UK Security Minister Ben Wallace said:

“It is imperative that our law enforcement and security and intelligence agencies have the tools they need to protect us all from very real threats to our security, prosperity and our way of life.””

Democracies are on track to lose their global economic dominance as ‘authoritarian capitalism’ rises

This week’s mini-drama over President Donald Trump’s Fourth of July speech, with all its military accompaniment, shouldn’t distract anyone from the far more significant story of global democratic decline on this 243rd anniversary of American Independence.

Dangers are accelerating to the democratic ideals that the American Revolution inspired. If no unanticipated shock disrupts current trajectories – say a democratic uprising in China, a Russian regime change or, still significant, a Venezuelan dictator’s decline – autocratic powers will surpass democracies in their economic size and influence within the coming decade.

And history has shown prosperity often precedes political dominance.

What’s been broadly reported by now is that global democratic freedoms are in their 13th year of decline, a result both of surging autocracies like Russia and China, fraying freedoms in liberal democracies and Western complacency about both. “The overall losses are still shallow compared with the gains of the late 20th century, but the pattern is consistent and ominous,” Freedom House reported in its 2019 assessment

  11. Hong Kong protesters aim to take message to mainland Chinese
    By KEN MORITSUGUtoday

HONG KONG (AP) — Thousands of people, many wearing black shirts and some carrying British flags, were marching in Hong Kong on Sunday, targeting a mainland Chinese audience as a month-old protest movement showed no signs of abating.

Chanting “Free Hong Kong” and words of encouragement to their fellow citizens, the demonstrators streamed through a shopping district popular with mainland visitors to the high-speed railway station that connects the semi-autonomous Chinese territory to Guangdong and other mainland cities.

Hong Kong has been riven by protests for the past month, sparked by proposed changes to extradition laws that would have allowed suspects to be sent to the mainland to face trial. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam suspended the bill and apologized for how it was handled, but protesters want it to be formally withdrawn and for Lam to resign.

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Tens of thousands of protesters marched through one of Hong Kong’s most touristy areas on Sunday, trying to gain support from mainland Chinese visitors for the city’s opposition to an extradition bill which has caused political turmoil.

Protests against the now-suspended bill have drawn millions of people to the streets in the former British colony in recent weeks, posing the biggest challenge Beijing has faced to its rule in the territory since Hong Kong returned to Chinese control in 1997.

The meat you eat, if you’re a carnivore, comes from animal muscles. But animals are composed of a lot more than just muscle.

They have organs and bones that most Americans do not consume. They require food, water, space and social connections. They produce waste.

Farmers spend a lot of energy and resources to grow complex organisms, creating waste in the process, only to focus on the profitable cuts of meat they can harvest.

It would be easier, more humane, less wasteful, to produce just the parts people want.

With the cost of rent continuing to rise, some Americans are taking unusual measures to find a place to sleep.

In Los Angeles and San Francisco, where prices are particularly exorbitant, people have taken to renting bunk beds in communal homes.

PodShare, which provides 10 to 15 co-ed bunkbeds in six locations across California, is hoping to help solve the affordable housing crisis.

The beds can be rented from $35 to $50 a night, which amounts to between $1,050 and $1500 for one month.

“TEN people, including three police officers, were taken to hospital after a suspected chemical attack outside a pub in Leicester.

Officers investigating a brawl near The Cricketers pub in Aylestone in the early hours of Sunday morning arrested five people, including a woman and a 15-year-old boy. The area around the pub was sealed off while forensics personnel examined the scene. In a statement, Leicestershire Police said: “Shortly after midnight today we received a report of a disorder involving a large number of people at a pub in Grace Road, Leicester, close to the cricket ground.

“It was reported that some of the group were carrying baseball bats and had caused damage to the pub.

“Police attended, along with colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service.

“On arrival, it was reported that a chemical had been sprayed by people involved in the incident and therefore Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service also attended.

“Ten people – seven members of the public and three police officers – were taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary to be checked over for chemical-related injuries.”

One local resident who declined to be named told LeicesterLive they had witnessed rowdy scenes outside the watering hole.

They said: “I then heard a car screeching to a halt outside and I thought it must be the police, but it wasn’t.

“Three guys with baseball bats got out.

“It looked like one guy got dragged inside. I called 999 and then the police turned up.

“It’s really scary, I had no idea there were chemicals involved.

The force said two men, aged 53 and 43, were arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and a 22-year-old man was detained suspected of a public order offence.

A woman, 29, was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage. All five suspects remain in custody. “

      Now this…
CNN reported on Saturday night that the prosecutor is James Comey’s daughter.

A team of federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York, along with some in the public corruption unit, have been assigned to the case.

Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey, is one of the prosecutors, according to a source with knowledge of the case.

This case is going to be interesting but with the prosecution coming from Southern District of New York (the group of prosecutors Mueller turned the persecution of President Trump and his people over to) there is very little hope that anyone besides Epstine will be prosecuted and he will probably get a slap on the wrist.

NOTE: – The following hour-plus, sci-fi classic opens with its protagonist scarpering off in one of my most favorite post-prop airplane designs. This wasn’t just the legendary Skunk Works’ debut product, it was America’s original, active-service combat fighter and easily represented the “Platonic Ideal”—or “First Principle” or “The Good” or “The Form Of The Good”—of a Streamline Moderne-style, turbojet propelled monoplane.

And wouldn’t you know it? The first US military interceptor jet ever to attain 500 mph (800 kph) in level flight—specifically in response to the German-built Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter—not only victoriously engaged in history’s first decisive all-jet dogfight but also broke the 1947 air speed record when it flew at 624 mph (1,004 kph).

Almost one thousand of them spent more than four decades in service training pilots, after trying their wings above the soil of ancient aviation genius, Leonardo DaVinci—and these birds did so after initially being designed and manufactured in just 143 days! (47 days earlier than the expected schedule).

Byyyyyyyyy … guess who?!? A personal hero plus the designer of almost every boyhood favorite and generally iconic warbird ever to practice Bernoulli’s law, Clarence Leonard “Kelly” Johnson. –

Federal prosecutors with the US Attorney’s office in Manhattan filed sex trafficking charges against Jeffrey Epstein after speaking to dozens of victims

He was taken into custody after his private jet touched down from a month-long trip to Paris on Saturday at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey

Epstein will remain in custody until he appears in court on Monday, where he will be indicted on federal charges for the first time

The plea deal Epstein agreed to back in 2008 saved him from having to register as a sex offender in 31 of 50 states

The US Attorney’s Office and a spokesperson with the New York Police Department both declined to comment on Saturday

This week, 2,000 pages of records that could reveal how he and his accused accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell allegedly trafficked underage girls were unsealed

n May 2016 FOX News reported that former President Bill Clinton traveled with Jeffrey Epstein on his famous “Lolita Express” at least 26 times and frequently ditched his secret service detail.

Former President Bill Clinton was a much more frequent flyer on a registered sex offender’s infamous jet than previously reported, with flight logs showing the former president taking at least 26 trips aboard the “Lolita Express” — even apparently ditching his Secret Service detail for at least five of the flights, according to records obtained by FoxNews.com.

Clinton’s presence aboard Jeffrey Epstein’s Boeing 727 on 11 occasions has been reported, but flight logs show the number is more than double that, and trips between 2001 and 2003 included extended junkets around the world with Epstein and fellow passengers identified on manifests by their initials or first names, including “Tatiana.” The tricked-out jet earned its Nabakov-inspired nickname because it was reportedly outfitted with a bed where passengers had group sex with young girls.

“Bill Clinton … associated with a man like Jeffrey Epstein, who everyone in New York, certainly within his inner circles, knew was a pedophile,” said Conchita Sarnoff, of the Washington, D.C. based non-profit Alliance to Rescue Victims of Trafficking, and author of a book on the Epstein case called “TrafficKing.” “Why would a former president associate with a man like that?”

  20. GREECE – Greek finance minister says election has resulted in a “big win” for the conservative opposition New Democracy party

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/greek-finance-minister-election-resulted-big-win-conservative-64178937

    ====================================
Greek conservatives on track for landslide win: exit polls

Greece’s conservative New Democracy party is on course for a crushing victory against leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Sunday’s general election and will return to power after over four years in the opposition, exit polls showed Sunday.

A combined survey by Greece’s main TV stations showed New Democracy, headed by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, son of a former prime minister, leading Tsipras’s Syriza party by an average of 40 percent to 28.5 percent.

“The result has been determined… but we’ll be back,” outgoing finance minister Euclid Tsakalotos told state TV ERT.

If these results are confirmed, the 51-year-old Harvard graduate and former McKinsey consultant Mitsotakis will have a majority of up to 167 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament.

Tsipras’s party will have up to 82 seats, the polls showed.

The final number will depend on how smaller parties fare. They need at least 3.0 percent of the vote to enter parliament.

The contents of at least one ballot box will likely be unaccounted for, after it was stolen by suspected anarchists in Athens, police said.

    – New parties –

New arrivals fighting to secure representation are Greek Solution, a nationalist party formed by TV salesman Kyriakos Velopoulos, and MeRA25, an anti-austerity party formed by maverick economist and former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis.

New arrivals fighting to secure representation are Greek Solution, a nationalist party formed by TV salesman Kyriakos Velopoulos, and MeRA25, an anti-austerity party formed by maverick economist and former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis.

According to the exit polls, Varoufakis’s party could elect up to 14 lawmakers.

Greek Solution could end up with 13 deputies, as many as neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn, which is in steep decline amid an ongoing trial for the 2013 murder of an anti-fascist rapper, allegedly carried out with the knowledge of senior Golden Dawn members.

    – A family affair –

New Democracy was last in power in 2014, in coalition with the Greek socialists.

Mitsotakis is a scion of one of Greece’s top political families.

He is the son of former prime minister Constantine Mitsotakis, one of the country’s longest-serving parliamentarians.

His sister is former minister Dora Bakoyannis, Athens’s first female mayor. And new Athens mayor Costas Bakoyannis, elected in May, is his nephew.

Sunday’s election is Greece’s third in as many months, and the first held in midsummer since 1928.

In May, New Democracy beat Syriza by nearly 9.5 points in European parliament elections. A week later, it completed a near-sweep of Greek regions in local elections.

After that, Tsipras was forced to call an early election. His term was scheduled to end in the autumn.

Greece’s youngest premier in more than a century, Tsipras had trailed in the polls for months amid widespread dissatisfaction over high taxes.

In parts of the country, there was also a backlash against a controversial agreement with North Macedonia that ended a bitter 27-year dispute over the country’s name.

“Greece is exiting 10 years of crisis and the new government will have the heavy task to give a chance to the country to recover completely or to sink”, 36-year-old Aphrodite told AFP, as she cast her vote in the bohemian downtown neighborhood of Exarcheia.

“I hope that from tomorrow we will be able to breathe with relief. To take a deep breath, if Mitsotakis does what he promises,” added Athinodoros, a 48-year-old self-employed worker.

Tsipras has accused Mitsotakis — who was part of a 2012-2014 crisis government — of “disastrous” mismanagement that brought hundreds of thousands of job losses and business failures.

Mitsotakis has now pledged to create “better” jobs through growth, foreign investment and tax cuts and to “steamroll” obstacles to business.

Tsipras — who reduced unemployment and raised the minimum wage for the first time since 2012 — was criticised for campaigning as an anti-austerity crusader before eventually accepting a third EU bailout and the economic cutbacks that entailed.

The election was held a few weeks before the first anniversary of the Mati fire, Greece’s deadliest wildfire that killed 102 people near Athens.

Knitting and fraying in a divided culture

SALEM, Ohio — Kay Thompson isn’t pleased about politics entering into every aspect of life.

And she certainly does not agree with shutting down the opinions one disagrees with. So she was put off when Ravelry, the popular knitting website, banned any projects and patterns that showed President Trump in their design, or users who praised him in their personal profiles.

“To me, to exclude a whole group of people because you don’t agree with their political views seems like you’re kind of practicing exactly what you are claiming you are against,” Thompson said from her knitting shop on East State St. in the charming business district of this town of 12,000.

  23. Mayor Pete: If Dems want to beat Trump, they need to veer further left?
By Howard Portnoy July 7, 2019

What’s he been smoking? The majority of candidates vying from his party’s nomination want to decriminalize border crossings by illegal aliens and provide them with free (read “taxpayer-funded”) health care. About the only position further left of where the Democrats currently stand would be to make illegals some sort of “super citizens” who would enjoy more rights than native-born Americans. Yet, Pete Buttigieg thinks the Dems are currently “playing it safe” and that the only way to defeat Donald Trump in 2020 is to tack even further left.

He said as much at a campaign rally in Sioux City, Iowa on Friday:

  24. Bye Bye Dubai: Wife of Ruler Flees

Princess Haya, the sixth wife of Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, fled Dubai and her marriage to start a new life. She took her seven-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter, along with $31 million dollars.

According to reports on June 29th, 2019, Princess Haya, 45, traveled first to Germany then London. She is said to be staying at her a home near Kensington Palace, with tight security, and is intent on fighting the legal battle brought by her husband from the UK.

In the meantime, Sheikh al-Maktoum, 69, who accuses her of betraying their marriage with her British bodyguard, has taken to social media in poetry and prose, condemning her flight and “disowning” his wife.

Princess Haya’s story gives hope to other women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who have dreamed of escaping the country. She’s now being called on to help free Sheikha Latifa of Dubai, a daughter of Sheikh al-Maktoum.

Princess Latifa made headlines in April of 2018 when she fled Dubai via a yacht in order to escape “years of torture and imprisonment by her father.” Her yacht was intercepted and she was dragged back home.

Insight into conditions for women in Dubai are often difficult to come by. The question of what women are dealing with can be speculations or a story of he-said/she-said.

    https://clarionproject.org/dubai-bye-bye-princess-haya-flees-kingdom/

    • It feels like the words, “fled Dubai via a yacht” have never been written before anywhere.

      • In this day and age trying to run away on a ocean going ship of any description is either an act of desperation or of stupidity, ships are way too easy to intercept. I am betting desperation.

  25. Clerics and Entertainers Seek to Bolster MBS’s Grip on Power

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: A public apology by a prominent Salafi scholar sheds light on Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman’s version of “moderate Islam,” which appears to be an effort to shape the Middle East and North Africa in his image and replace religion with hypernationalism.

Claiming to speak in the name of the Sahwa (Awakening) movement, Aidh Qarni, one of the Saudi kingdom’s most popular religious scholars, has broken with the Muslim Brotherhood-linked group’s past call for political reform and instead wholeheartedly endorsed Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman’s undefined notion of an Islam that would be free of extremism.

“I would like to apologize to Saudi society for…the extremism, the violation of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, the violation of the tolerance of Islam, the violation of the moderate and merciful nature of Islam. I support today the moderate and open-to-the-world Islam that has been called for by Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman,” Qarni said, wearing a Salafi-style red and white headdress.

Sri Lanka: On Easter Sunday, April 21, Islamic terrorists launched a bombing campaign on Christians; the death toll reached 253, with hundreds more wounded. Eight separate explosions took place, at least two of which were suicide bombings: three targeted churches celebrating Easter Sunday Mass; four targeted hotels frequented by Western tourists possibly in connection with Easter holiday; one blast was in a house, and killed three police officers during a security operation. At least 39 foreigners — including citizens of the United States, Britain, Australia, Japan, Denmark and Portugal — were among the dead.

Most of the fatalities occurred in the three church-bombings. The worst took place in St. Sebastian’s, a Catholic church in Negombo; there, over 100 Christian worshippers were murdered. At St. Anthony’s Shrine, another Catholic church in Colombo, the nation’s capital, at least 52 were murdered; and at the evangelical Zion Church, at least 28 were murdered.

“I don’t have words to express my pain,” said a Christian man who survived the bombing at St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo:

  28. Trump’s Iran Sanctions Face Seven Fallacies

    by Amir Taheri
    July 7, 2019 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/14499/trump-iran-sanctions-fallacies

As President Donald Trump tightens the screws on the current ruling elite in Tehran, the debate on the possible consequences of his policy rages on in American media, think tanks and political circles. Moreover, because Trump’s constituency is outside such elite spheres the impression created is that his Iran policy either has failed already or is set to produce undesirable unintended consequences.

In that context, seven claims form the main themes of the campaign launched by the pro-Tehran lobby with support from sections of the US Democrat Party and others who dislike Trump for different reasons. The first claim is that sanctions do not work.

That theme is developed without spelling out what the intended aims of sanctions are. Trump has said his aim is to persuade the Khomeinist clique in Tehran to change aspects of its behavior abroad. In that sense, sanctions are working.

The mullahs have started to reduce their footprint in Syria and Yemen, without quite opting for total withdrawal. Offices in more than 30 Iranian cities, to enlist “volunteers” for “Jihad” in Syria, have been closed, and the recruitment of Afghan and Pakistani mercenaries has stopped. Tehran’s military and diplomatic presence in Yemen has been downsized, ostensibly for security reasons. Smuggling arms to Houthis continues albeit at a reduced rate.

    • Intereting, the sanctions are depleting the Iranian governments bank accounts, as this happens we are going to see more moves to scare us out of the sanctions. So far the Iranians have keep their attempts to scare us at low level attacks that hurt things but not peple. It is going to be a long summer and Iran will try more things to get us to drop the sanctions.

We have all read about the social unrest in Iran so the more the sanctions hurt the better the chance (not really a good chance unless the Iranian government collapses) that the Iranian people will remove their current government. President Trumps efforts are being under cut (to an extent) by Obama and Kerry telling the Iranians to hang tough and that Trump will be voted out in 2020. When PT is re-elected they many get desperate and do something rash.

  29. SPAIN – BARCELONA – VIDEO: Tourist couple mugged by youths in broad daylight in central Barcelona

A video shows the latest incident that reflects the current law and order problem in central Barcelona. This time the victims are a couple of Japanese tourists who were violently assaulted this week, by a group of six youths in El Born neighbourhood, in the heart of Barcelona’s old city.

The six young men mugged the Japanese man in order to steal his mobile phone, as people who witnessed the attack explained.

    Highly violent

The violence of the assault caused the tourist to fall to the ground. The panic on the face of his partner, also Japanese, is visible in the video.

The six youths, one of them on a bicycle, had been following the couple, and when they saw that the mobile phone might be an easy target, they threw themselves on its owner. After wresting it out of his hands, the group ran away through the narrow alleyways of El Born.

The couple have laid a complaint and the Catalan Mossos d’Esquadra police, who have all the images, have opened an investigation.

Police sources have told El Nacional that the youths who appear in the video are “well known” by the police in this city crime hot spot and are also sought in relation to other violent incidents. A similar assault one night in April in another central Barcelona neighbourhood, the Raval, was also captured on video (link in Catalan).

    Lawlessness in Barcelona

On Friday a man suffered a heart attack after being attacked by a person who wanted to steal the watch, also in the Raval district. As well, in less than 24 hours, police have been informed of two sexual assaults, one against a 22-year-old Belgian tourist, and another sexual attack on a minor in the Port Olímpic area.

Other incidents in recent days have included a knife wound received by a security guard in the Barri Gòtic area after he acted against one of three teenagers, of a foreign nationality according to police, attempting a robbery in Carrer Duc (link in Catalan). In the same area, minors aged between 12 and 14 were found sleeping rough on Wednesday.

  30. Rapinoe Asked At Presser What Exactly She’s Protesting

Pink haired and flamboyant U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe is in all the headlines lately for telling a reporter there’s no way she’s going to the “f***ing” White House if the U.S. wins this summer’s World Cup. As a gay athlete, Rapinoe says that President Trump’s administration is very backwards on LGBT rights. Trump responded with a Twitter thread telling Rapinoe he was not impressed by her behavior and reminded her that she needs to win first before he even considers extending the team an invitation. He also recently told the press that her national anthem protests are inappropriate.

Rapinoe’s teammates, like defender Ali Krieger, had her back. She tweeted this direct message for Trump on Wednesday.

    • BREAKING FROM THE NORSERADISH NEWS NETWORK:

This is Trump getting ready to break the collective arm of the DNC’s legacy political machine. And, trust me, when POTUS has done nobody’s ever playing the piano again. By comparison, Epstein’s just some horndog teeny pimp who overheard the capo’s home address and phone.

All the other riders in that donkey-drawn clown car? They’ll fall all over each other breaking each other’s arms for us, so not to worry.

Just the followup Epstein investigations are going to flush out the DNC’s criminal underpinnings like a Fukushima riptide. Trump can surf the media tsunami of warrants, arrests, jailings, trials, convictions and incarcerations—along with enough ratting out to put the Pied Piper’s grandkids all through medical school—into a wave of popularity so big it washes away 0’Hillary’s leaky lifeline and every 2020 contender to boot.

And this Mongolian gangbang is just the beginning.

Everything looks be on schedule for a hat trick of Trump jailing bigshot career Donks (just short of 0bama), using a nine iron to crush Xi’s nuts for a Sundae drive, and pull-starting Iran’s biggest turbans like knockoff chainsaws.

      What’s not to like?

      • I heard the lead prosecutor is James Comey’s daughter. that could screw things up a bit. I bet the Clintons have their number.

        • I don’t think she is the lead prosecutor but she is part of the team. I seem to remember her being part of a prosecution team that let some big Dem or big Dem money man off with a slap on the wrist but can’t find anything about this.

    • Eeyore please put this one on the next links thread,, I know it is 40 minutes long but it is putting a lot of real important information that the worlds needs.

    • Would everybody please ask themselves one simple question?

What would happen tomorrow if the entire Uighur population was exterminated?

Would it trigger a World War? (Or even any snowflakes?)

Would there be a multinational response? (Too late, as ever.)

Would the wannabe caliphate even retaliate? (Bhahahaha!!!)

Would anyone besides Trump halt business as usual with the CCP?

Would anybody else give a zipless fuck-all?

I will now add to my prediction of a Muslim holocaust the corollary theorem that any vocal condemnation of that horror will be reserved for nuanced diplomatic negotiations.

  32. Iranian Scientists Accused of Violating US Sanctions (aawsat, Jul 7, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1802021/iranian-scientists-accused-violating-us-sanctions

“An Iranian scientist who was coming to the US for a prestigious visiting scientist position was arrested on arrival.

Prosecutors in Atlanta have accused professor Masoud Soleimani and two of his former students of conspiring and attempting to export biological materials from the U.S. to Iran without authorization in violation of U.S. sanctions.

Defense attorneys for the three argue no authorization was needed because the recombinant proteins are medical materials.

The proteins were seized from one of the scientists at the Atlanta airport as she traveled to Iran in September 2016. Prosecutors got an indictment in June 2018, and Soleimani was arrested in October.

The two former students – Mahboobe Ghaedi and Maryam Jazayeri – live in the US and are free on bond. Soleimani remains in custody.”

    • The problem is Comey’s daughter is one of the team of prosecutors from the Southern District of New York who will prosecute Epstein. The Deep State is rubbing our noses in the fact that they have already fixed the trial so no one they consider important will be put on trial and that Epstein will receive a very light sentence.

The last time we had a political division this deep with both sides digging in we have a civil war. I think we will have one this time but not like the last one, it won’t be big units shooting at each other it will be an asymmetric war that the left can keep going for many years.

  33. Afghanistan: At least 14 dead, 180 injured after car bomb attack on security compound

At least 14 people were killed and over 180 were wounded after a car bomb was detonated near an Afghan security compound in the eastern city of Ghazni on Sunday.

The attack reportedly targeted the National Directorate of Security (NDS) and took place near a school. Footage shows Afghan security forces examining the scene after the attack as well as school children who were injured in the blast receiving treatment in the local hospital.

Arif Noori, a spokesperson for Ghazni Province’s governor, said that more than 40 of the wounded are school children.

“At least two security officers are dead and nine others were wounded, four civilians were killed and 78 others were wounded,” he added.

According to reports, the attack was organised by Taliban fighters aimed at disrupting the ongoing all-Afghan peace conference in Qatar.

    https://gulfnews.com/world/gulf/yemen/yemen-radio-raises-132000-for-hezbollah-1.65071130

“A fundraising campaign on a Yemeni radio station affiliated with Iran-backed Al Houthi militia has collected 73.5 million Yemeni rials for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The campaign on the Sam FM station solicited donations from listeners in the Arab world’s poorest nation from May 25 to July 5, reported Al Houthi-held Saba news agency. It was the radio’s third fundraising campaign and the first for Hezbollah. Saba cited the value of the funds as equaling $132,000, likely using a black market rate for the currency.

US sanctions on Hezbollah’s backer Iran have strained the Lebanese group’s finances, prompting its leader Hassan Nasrallah to appeal for public assistance. Hezbollah has been accused of supporting the Houthis in their war against the Yemeni government and the Saudi-led coalition.”
