Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. ISIS at the Border
Terrorist infiltration threat increases the stakes.
    June 10, 2019
    Joseph Klein

The staggering numbers alone prove there is an unprecedented illegal immigration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. In just May of this year, 132,887 people were apprehended between ports of entry on the southwest border with Mexico, the highest monthly figure since March 2006. The number of U.S. Border Patrol southwest border apprehensions for the first 5 months of 2019 is more than 2.6 times greater than the number of apprehensions during the same period last year. “We are bursting at the seams,” Randy Howe, executive director of Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Field Operations, told reporters last week. “It’s unsustainable and this can’t continue.”

As far as open border Democrats are concerned, however, the only crisis at the U.S. border with Mexico is the plight of the many thousands of migrants themselves as they try to manipulate our loophole-ridden asylum system or otherwise try to enter the country illegally. The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives refuses to fix the asylum mess, or to provide monies for effective border security that must include barriers erected in vulnerable locations. Instead, they passed an amnesty bill last week for more than 2 million so-called “dreamers” whose parents brought them to this country illegally as children and individuals who had been designated for “Temporary Protected Status.”

Beyond the sheer number of illegal migrants overrunning the border and straining our resources, the surging flow of migrants traversing Mexico into the United States poses a serious national security risk. Open border Democrats could care less. They say not to worry about terrorists crossing the U.S.-Mexico border since no terrorist attack linked to such migration has happened yet. Beto O’Rourke said during a campaign rally, for example, “[Z]ero, precisely zero, terrorists, terrorist groups, or terror plots have ever been connected with the U.S.-Mexico border to do harm to people within the United States.” Proponents of such a pre-9/11 attitude are either clueless or, in the case of the radical left, are part of the red-green axis.

  2. YouTube’s Failed Ban Shows Why Internet Censorship is Doomed to Fail
    Free speech can’t be stopped.
    June 10, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. The Google service’s effort to implement its new ban on Nazi content ran afoul of the error rate of trying to cope with these impossible numbers.

The casualties included history teachers who had uploaded historical videos, activists documenting Neo-Nazi rallies, and people uploading Hitler meme videos from Downfall. Despite Google’s boasts about its algorithms, they’re no more accurate than the ones that flag any comment which mentions Hitler.

Algorithms are good at making positive recommendations, but despite a cottage industry of machine learning censorship that took off after Trump’s victory and the media’s fake news moral panic, they’re not any good at filtering out negative content. Deeper analysis can spot how an item is promoted, leading to claims of inauthentic activity and bot networks that now fill the news, but cannot pass judgement on the actual content. But despite that, the dot coms will keep on trying.

YouTube is especially motivated because unlike Facebook, it isn’t profitable. In 2015, the Wall Street Journal suggested that despite a billion users and $4 billion in revenues, it wasn’t making it money. Since then, Google has become more mysterious about the numbers resulting in some wrangling with the SEC. The service’s varying efforts to solicit a paid subscription model that would compete with Netflix and Prime have failed. YouTube Red only managed 1.5 million subscribers. Last fall, Premium’s originals went public. YouTube TV managed to gain 1 million subscribers. That’s less than half of Sling TV’s numbers.

  3. The Death of Morton Sobell and the End of the Rosenberg Affair

With the recent death of the unrepentant spy, his story, along with that of other American Jews steeped in Communism, can finally be told.

Last December 26, at the age of one-hundred-one, Morton Sobell died. His name may be unfamiliar today, but the names of his associates are not: he was the co-defendant of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg in the 1951 atomic-bomb spy trial. The Rosenbergs were executed in 1953, but Sobell lived on, one of the few remaining survivors of the corps of Americans who spied for the Soviet Union. He kept the faith, steadfastly and with gusto, proclaiming his innocence and that of the Rosenbergs until 2008, when he belatedly confessed in public to their conspiracy to commit espionage.

To the degree that this belated confession shattered the vision of innocence still held by the remaining defenders of the Rosenberg ring—the vision, that is, that an entire generation of Soviet spies, including Alger Hiss, Judith Coplon, Harry Dexter White, Nathan Gregory Silvermasters, William Perl, Lauchlin Currie, and numerous others were pure and simple victims being hounded and

CBP agents recently reported an MS-13 gang member used a toddler with chickenpox in an attempt to make a fraudulent migrant family claim.

In a recent tweet Customs and Border protection posted a photo of a very young immigrant child with chickenpox who was part of a fraudulent family unit.

The male who the child was with is not related to the child and has ties to MS-13 gang.

The tweet was posted by the El Centro CBP unit.

  5. STUNNING! NY Times Labels Top Conservative YouTubers as ‘Far -Right’ in Continued Push to Ban Conservative Content Online

The push to eliminate conservative content online continued on Sunday in The New York Times.

Since the 2016 election there has been an organized and well funded movement on the left to eliminate conservative content online.

And it has worked — thanks to a weak and ineffective Repubican party.

Facebook has been eliminating traffic to conservative websites since the 2016 election. Over a billion page views have been eliminated to conservative publishers since the 2016 election.

We reported in July 2018 that Twitter has long been censoring conservatives. Twitter evens censors and shadowbans the President of the United States, Donald Trump’s twitter account, @realDonaldTrump.

And Google-YouTube is openly deleting conservative content and demonetizing conservative accounts.

And the left is cheering this.

  6. BREITBART – Google CEO Sundar Pichai Defends YouTube Censorship in Interview

Google CEO Sundar Pichai defended YouTube’s censorship practices in a recent interview following the latest round of content creator demonetization and bannings caused by leftist outlet Vox.

In an interview with Axios on HBO, Google CEO Sundar Pichai defended YouTube’s censorship following the sites most recent scandal in which a number of creators had their content demonetized following complaints from Vox journalist Carlos Maza. Pichai spoke with transgender Axios reporter Ina Fried, who advocates for further censorship on the platform in the interview. Pichai discusses YouTube’s moderation tactics and plans to introduce more “authoritative sources” and “fact checks” on videos across the platform.

Axios began the interview by asking about questionable content that YouTube has failed to remove, citing a video of a teenager in “Muslim garb” spreading anti-Muslim, ant-Semitic, and homophobic rhetoric. The interviewer asked Pichai what goes through his mind when he sees a video like that on YouTube garner 350,000 views.

Pichai replied that YouTube plans to crack down on “borderline” content that does not violate the rules of the site but that they find objectionable:

You know, I don’t know all the details of this specific video, but in general, look, I mean all of us, you know, none of us want harmful content on our platforms. I think last quarter alone we removed 9 million videos from the platform. More recently, we have introduced, you know just like today we do this in search. We, you know, we rank content based on quality. And so we are bringing that same notion and approach to YouTube, so that we can rank higher quality stuff better and really prevent borderline content.

Content which doesn’t exactly violate policies, which need to be removed, but which can still cause harm. And so we are working hard. It’s a hard computer science problem. It’s also a hard societal problem because we need better frameworks around what is hate speech, what’s not, and how do we as a company make those decisions at scale, and get it right without making mistakes.

The interviewer replied that although YouTube talks a lot about progress, it seems as if very often there is a new issue with the site and new content that people are upset about being featured on the platform. The interviewer asked Pichai how he would grade where YouTube is at right now, to which Pichai replied:

Look we aren’t quite where we want to be. But I think it’s a genuinely hard problem of how do you, YouTube has the scale of the entire Internet. And I think we’re making a lot of progress, but the thing we are trying to do is to bring more authoritative sources and fact checks on videos, which may be controversial. It’s a case where we got it wrong, but that’s what we are trying to do and we are working hard to improve.

  7. BREITBART – 90 Per Cent of Moroccan ‘Minor’ Migrants in Sweden Are Adults

A new report claims just ten per cent of Moroccan “minor” migrants who have come to Sweden in recent years were actually minors, the rest adults.

Around 1,800 single Moroccan men have applied for asylum in Sweden in the last seven years but following closer cooperation with the government of Morocco the number has fallen to 55 so far this year, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

Christian Frödén, group manager at the border police in Stockholm praised the cooperation with the Moroccan police who have allowed their Swedish counterparts access to fingerprint databases saying, “When we find their identity they leave the country and move on to other cities in Europe such as Barcelona or Paris. They do not want the police to know who they are because then they can be punished and be expelled to Morocco.”

The figures show the vast majority of those claiming to be children — that status comes with additional rights and protections — are indeed adults.

One Moroccan migrant who was caught lying about his age was 22-year-old Ali who came to Sweden last year claiming to be 16.

Ali told SVT that other migrants had encouraged him to lie about his age in order to have a better chance at getting benefits from the Swedish government but after the Moroccan fingerprint database proved he was an adult he was forced to live on the streets committing petty crimes to earn money.

“There is no future in Sweden. I know that the Migration Board will say that I do not have the right to be here and that I must leave Sweden,” Ali said and added that he was looking to move to Belgium where he claimed to have connections in order to make a living selling drugs but did not have the funds to pay for a ticket there from Stockholm.

Sweden is not the only country to cooperate with the Moroccan police to identify supposed minor migrants in criminal street gangs. In France, police arrested 1,500 Moroccan migrants but were only able to deport six of them in 2018.

  8. Trump’s North Korea Policy Should Be Encouraged, Not Undermined

    by Peter Huessy
    June 10, 2019 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/14356/trump-north-korea-policy

t a recent event on Capitol Hill — hosted by the Washington-based Mitchell Institute — the former China Country Director at the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Joe Bosco, defended U.S. President Donald Trump’s North Korea policy against critics who were accusing the White House either of leaning too far in the direction of diplomacy with Pyongyang, or too bent on imposing maximum economic and military pressure on it.

The criticism, according to Bosco, stems from two false narratives — emanating from Pyongyang and Beijing — which have been governing the debate.

The first is that North Korea is justified in having nuclear weapons, due to America’s long-standing “hostile policy” towards the regime in Pyongyang. The second is that China has had virtually no role in the establishment of North Korea’s nuclear program — and that Beijing seeks “denuclearization” and “stability” on the Korean peninsula.

To grasp the absurdity of North Korea’s claim that its nuclear program is “defensive” in nature and created to counter American “hostility” — one need only ask why Pyongyang was party to the 1994 “Agreed Framework Between the United States of America and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” and the 2003 Six-Party Talks.

    • This article points out the truth, the never Trumpers in both parties would rather see the US destroyed then allow President Trump any victories. Given the amount of resistance to all of Trumps policies the best we can hope for is that China collapses at some point during the coming civil wars in the west.

While European powers still claim Iran’s regime is in compliance with the nuclear deal, a new German intelligence report accuses the Islamic Republic of seeking to build weapons of mass destruction.

Fox News obtained a May 2019 intelligence document from the state of Bavaria detailing Iran’s nefarious weapons activities in the southern German state during the previous year.

Iran is a “risk country” that is “making efforts to expand its conventional arsenal of weapons with weapons of mass destruction,” wrote the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution in its intelligence report.

  11. Moroccan migrants under investigation over bombing Matteo Salvini’s League’s party office
    https://voiceofeurope.com/2019/04/moroccan-migrants-under-investigation-over-bombing-matteo-salvinis-leagues-party-office/

Two Moroccan migrants who reside in Italy are under investigation for their connection to the bombing of an office of Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini’s League party.
According to a report by Il Giornale, the attack happened in January, and resulted in the front door of the League party headquarters in San Valentino Torio destroyed after an explosive was detonated. Following the blast, leftist politicians in the country played it off as merely ‘Christmas fireworks’.
Italian prosecutors have said that the two primary suspects in the attack are Moroccan migrants – Abderrahim S., 41, and Moktar J., 37 – who are currently being investigating under the suspicion of setting off the explosives. Both men were identified thanks to footage captured by CCTV.
The regional deputy coordinator for the League party in Salerno, Mariano Falcone, stated that although the harm caused to the building wasn’t extensive, “It is an attack against Matteo Salvini and against the League. He called the attack “disturbing”.
Falcone expressed that, “We must not let our guard down,” while he warned of violent leftist groups that have popped up recently in the country are behaving in a similar fashion to extreme-left terrorists who perpetrated acts of violence in the country during the 1970s.
One of these extreme-left terrorists, Cesare Battisti, not long ago admitted to killing a number of people dura that era after he was deported by Brazil’s recently elected National Populist president Jair Bolsonaro.
This is hardly the first time that Salvini’s party offices have been attacked with some kind of explosive device. Just last year in August, extreme-left Antifa attacked the League’s party headquarters in Treviso. The group took responsibility for the bombing online.
In September last year, university leftists in Italy put up posters calling for the assassination of Salvini.
Two separate explosive devices were armed for the attack – one employed to divert police and other people to the area where a second explosive filled with metal fragments and nails would then detonate. Luckily, Italian authorities were able to disarm the second explosive before it went off and wreaked havoc.
Since he assumed office in 2018, it’s been most mostly extremist leftist organizations who have called for and who have perpetrated violent attacks against Salvini and his League party. However, this most recent case in Salerno is quite different in that the alleged perpetrators appear to be migrants.
This most recent bombing against the League’s regional party headquarters comes on the heels of another migrant’s – 47-year-old Senegalese national Ousseynou Sy – attempt to set a bus ablaze with 51 school children on board. The Senagalese man stated he did it as an act of revenge against Salvini for his anti-mass migration policies.

  13. Turkey slams Greek Cyprus over reported arrest warrants (memo, Jun 10, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190610-turkey-slams-greek-cyprus-over-reported-arrest-warrants/

“Turkey on Monday slammed the Greek Cypriot administration’s reported decision to issue arrest warrants for crew members of the Turkish-flagged drillship Fatih, reports Anadolu Agency.

Any such warrants are “null and void” for us, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said in a statement.

“Nobody should doubt that we will give the necessary response if it dares [to do so],” Aksoy said.

His remarks came after the Greek Cypriot administration reportedly issued arrest warrants for crew members of the drillship Fatih and officials of companies cooperating with the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO).

“We will also initiate the necessary counter-legal processes together with relevant institutions,” he added.

Aksoy also stressed that Greek Cypriot efforts to halt Turkey’s work on its own continental shelf using such futile methods “will yield no results.” He added:

Turkey will resolutely continue its petrol and natural gas exploration and drilling as planned in order to protect the rights of both its own continental shelf and the rights of Turkish Cypriots, who are equal partners of the island.

Speaking separately, ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party spokesman Omer Celik said: “We will not allow the Greek Cypriot administration to usurp the rights of the Turkish Cypriots.”

“The news that the Greek Cypriot administration issuing arrest warrants for the crew of our Fatih drillship and officials of the companies cooperating with TPAO is a clear provocation,” Celik said.

“Ignoring the Turkish Cypriots and trying to usurp their rights is vain politics,” he added.

Devlet Bahceli, head of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), also condemned the reported Greek Cypriot move as “unlawful.”

Turkey has the strength and competence to overcome “barbaric” and “anti-peace moves” in the eastern Mediterranean, he added.”

“The autonomous city of Ceuta has been upgrading its security system at the border with Morocco, as planned by the Spanish ministry of interior.

According to El Confidencial, a Spanish news outlet, the ministry replaced 41 DOMOS cameras and 11 fixed cameras and installed 14 new technical cameras as well as a more modern CCTV control platform.

The facial recognition system, whose launch date has not yet been announced, will be installed in both Ceuta and Melilla as a way to fast-track border control and increase security.

  15. LHC to take up blasphemy case on June 25 (tribune, Jun 10, 2019)
    https://tribune.com.pk/story/1989558/1-lhc-take-blasphemy-case-june-25/

“The Lahore High Court (LHC) has fixed the date for hearing an appeal of a Christian couple, who are on death row for committing blasphemy.

A division bench, headed by Justice Qasim Muhammad Khan, will take up the matter on June 25.

Saiful Malook, who successfully pleaded the case of Aasia Bibi – a Christian women convicted of blasphemy and later acquitted after spending nearly nine years in prison – will represent the couple.

The lawyer has urged the government to give him security.

Saiful Malook Advocate confirmed to The Express Tribune that he had submitted his papers of attorney (Vakalatnama) in the LHC to plead their case, saying that he had already met with Kausar at Multan jail.

Malook – who was offered citizenship by EU countries but returned to Pakistan to play his role in human rights matters – said,

“Kausar is lodged in the same death cell, where Bibi was imprisoned before her acquittal in the blasphemy case by the Supreme Court late last year.”

Shagufta Kausar and Shafqat Masih were awarded death sentence under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) read with Section 34 of the PPC by the additional sessions judge of Toba Tek Singh on April 4, 2014.

They were also directed to pay Rs100,000 fine each and in case of default, they would further undergo six-month imprisonment.

    Case history

The complainant in the case against the couple is Muhammad Hussain, a resident of Gojra. On July 18, 2013, when he was offering prayers at a mosque, he received an SMS, containing blasphemous remarks. He showed the SMS to his friends – Muhammad Shabbir and Khalid Maqsood.

Thereafter, he approached his counsel for legal proceedings on the basis of the said SMS. While sitting in the office of the council, he received five more SMS. When the counsel tried to contact the number, he (lawyer) also received three to four SMS on his mobile phone.

The police claimed that both the convicts confessed to committing blasphemy. After the investigation, police submitted a report under Section 173 CrPC, declaring that the couple were involved in the commission of an offence and would face trial.

On the conclusion of the trial, the couple, on April 4, 2014, were convicted and awarded death sentence.

Five years ago, the couple had challenged the trial court’s order on many grounds. Their appeal contends that the witnesses produced by the prosecution during the trial were related to the complainant and were ‘inimical’ towards them. “So their statements required independent corroboration, which is lacking in this case,” the appeal said.

    Motive

The convicts also claimed that about eight to nine months prior to the case, a minor quarrel took place between their children and those of the neighbours, who developed a grudge against them.

Kausar was working at the Bishop Compound and the copy of her national identity card was available in the record of the compound, where the neighbour was also working.

He succeeded in obtaining the copy of her NIC and purchased the alleged SIM in her name and later misused that SIM and forwarded the alleged blasphemous SMS to the complainant, who was in collusion with their neighbour.

The prosecution; however, claimed that the alleged SIM was purchased by Kausar along with her husband.

The convicts denied the charge, saying that the husband, Shafqat Masih, is a disabled person since long and could not move or walk.

Likewise, they contended that there was no evidence that they purchased the SIM from a franchise, adding that the convicts were illiterate persons and could not write the alleged SMS, which was written in English.

The appeal also contended that Section 196 CrPC had not been followed as the FIR was lodged by a private person, who was not the competent authority nor duly authorised by the central or provincial governments. It is also stated that the evidence produced by the prosecution is “discrepant, shaky and not worth reliance”.

Likewise, the appeal states that the trial court did not appreciate the defence version in its true prospective, which resulted in grave miscarriage of justice. “The learned judge has based his judgement on surmises and conjectures instead of solid evidence,” it adds.

After the passage of five years, the appeal was fixed before the LHC division bench, led by Justice Aalia Neelum, on February 7, but it was left over. It is learned that the matter will be relisted soon.”

  17. UN Security Council extends Libya weapons ban (aa, Jun 10, 2019)
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/africa/un-security-council-extends-libya-weapons-ban/1500627

“The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved Monday a one-year extension on the flow of weapons to Libya.

The ban, which is being principally implemented by a EU force, will remain in effect through June 2020 amid ongoing hostilities between renegade commander Khalifa Haftar and the U.N.-recognized government in Tripoli.

Haftar’s forces have so far been unsuccessful in seeking to capture Tripoli from the U.N.-recognized Government of National Accord in a campaign that began in April.

Nevertheless, his forces remain deployed in several areas around the capital.

The U.N. Security Council authorized in 2016 Operation Sophia, the EU operation initially aimed at combatting migrant trafficking, to also inspect ships in the Mediterranean suspected of carrying weapons to enforce the arms embargo.

The resolution adopted Monday requests U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres to report to the council within 11 months on the embargo’s implementation.

Libya has remained beset by turmoil since 2011, when long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi was ousted and killed in a NATO-backed uprising after four decades in power.

The oil-rich country has since seen the emergence of two rival seats of power: one in eastern Libya, with which Haftar is affiliated, and the Tripoli-based U.N.-recognized government.”
