Charting the fall of the west with callipers: Links 2, May 30, 2019

1. Is France dead? As a cohesive Western, Judaeo-Christian nation: yes.

There was something darkly symbolic about the fire that nearly destroyed the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris on April 15 – the morrow of Palm Sunday — and the fall amid heavy smoke of its 93-metre iron spire. One couldn’t help linking the religious and architectural disaster with a deeper crisis: the passing of France as a distinct country, or at least as the Western, Judaeo-Christian nation it had hitherto been presumed to be.

Writing in Causeur the morning after, Hadrien Desuin, a conservative journalist, conveyed some of these feelings as he observed: “Beyond the cathedral’s fire, France itself is burning …We have witnessed the Church’s slow death … and now even the old stones are collapsing… Yes, France may die… That’s what Notre-Dame’s flames tell us.”

Prophesying imminent doom is admittedly as old as civilisation itself. While most such warnings remain merely rhetorical, many others are however validated by ensuing events, from the forebodings of Cassandra of Troy three thousand years ago – as recorded by Homer — to Winston Churchill’s statements in the wake of the Munich accords in 1938.

2. Swedish town bans Islamic headscarf in primary schools

A municipality in southern Sweden has voted to ban the Islamic headscarf in schools for children under the age of 13, in a first for Sweden.
The populist measure is part of a new ‘integration plan’ for the town of Staffanstorp, roughly 20km outside Malmö, which has been drawn up for by the centre-right Moderate Party and the populist Sweden Democrats.
“The headscarf is a symbol that women are not available. It’s a sexualisation of women and it’s unreasonable to do that to young  girls,” Christian Sonesson, the town’s Moderate Party mayor, told the local Sydsvenskan newspaper.  “I have nothing against adult women wearing headscarves, but these are small children, little girls.”
The measure was voted through with seven votes in favour and four against on Wednesday afternoon.
Pierre Sjöström, a councillor for the town’s Social Democrat opposition accused Sonesson of “foregrounding a non-problem”.

3. Jail terms sought for 18 doctors for not reporting teen pregnancies to authorities

An Istanbul prosecutor is seeking six months to 3.5 years in jail for 18 doctors for not notifying authorities about the pregnancies of teenage girls, most of whom are Syrians.

The indictment prepared by the Bak?rköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said that the doctors failed to notify judicial authorities of 348 pregnant minors, majority of whom are Syrians and who applied for medical care at the Ba?c?lar Training and Research Hospital in 2017.

The indictment sought from six months to 3.5 years in jail for each of the 10 doctors for not reporting more than one underage pregnancy to judicial authorities (as is legally required), while from six months to two years in jail for each of the eight doctors for not reporting one underage pregnancy case.

According to regulations that should be enforced by the Health Ministry, prosecutors or police forces should be notified in all cases of teen pregnancies under the age of 18.

Cases involving teens younger than 15 automatically qualify as “sexual abuse.”

Of the 348 pregnant minors, 34 of them were under the age of 15, the majority of whom are Syrians, the indictment said.

4. Dangerous’: Hungarian PM Orban and Jordan Peterson Slam Illegal Immigration During Meeting

Both the Hungarian prime minister and Canadian academic are known to be staunch opponents of the uncontrolled illegal migration that has been pouring into the EU since 2015.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met with Canadian University Professor Jordan Peterson, who was attending the Brain Bar Festival in Budapest, on 30 May to discuss an array of topics. Namely, the two discussed the acute issue of illegal immigration, agreeing that it is both “unnecessary and dangerous”, Hungary today reported, citing Orban’s Assistant Under Secretary Havasi Bertalan.

Orban and Peterson also discussed contemporary political correctness, which in their opinion has made “sensible public discussions” virtually impossible. The two reportedly agreed that political correctness had been invented by a “small, ideologically driven group”.

Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson first shot to fame after refusing to use special pronouns for transgender people, but later became known as a professor with views often at odds with the mainstream, especially when it comes to free speech. He is renowned as a steadfast critic of political correctness, hard-line feminism, Marxism, and post-modernist narratives.

5. Finnish Muslims Denounce Wit’s Public Defacing of Quran, Urge ‘Wisdom’

Rabat – Leading Muslim figures in Islamic centers in Finland  have released a statement addressing the incident on Sunday May 26, when far right politician Marco de Wit tore up the holy Quran in the presence of witnesses and police.

The statement  follows a meeting held by Islamic Center leaders on Wednesday, May 30.

In the statement, they denounced the “hostile” and “blasphemous” nature of the public display, which they said brings into the open a deep-seated racist attitude towards Muslims and Islam.

The statement called for Muslims of Finland to “show patience and wisdom” and to seek legal justice rather than react rashly and meet the negative expectations of Muslims created by populist ‘fear mongering’ and divisive politics which seek to cause ‘contrived disputes’. The statement also urged all Muslims to avoid staging strikes and protests and to respond peacefully.

(Advice to the muslims in Finland. Do not put up with blasphemy of islam and non-sharia compliance. Pack your bags and move to one of the over 50 muslim countries in the world and teach the Finns a lesson when they see how much poorer they are without all your cultural enrichment.)

9. Study: Sweden Has Most Difficulty Getting Migrants into Work out of Whole Nordic Area

A study by Professor Emeritus in Economics Lars Calmfors has revealed that compared to Finland, Norway, and Denmark, Sweden has had the most difficulty getting new migrants into the workforce.

Professor Calmfors noted that one of the main problems with getting newly arrived migrants into work is that many are low-skilled labourers and the barriers for entry into low-skilled jobs are much higher for them, Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Radio reports.

“It is an obstacle in Sweden that we have a high minimum wage. This then applies to retail and hotels and restaurants where many low-skilled people can get a job,” Calmfors said.

“I think we would also need a lower minimum wage. Then one could try to do it in such a way that one does not lower the minimum wage in general, but one tries to construct new types of low-qualified jobs that can simply be paid less,” he added.

  1. 1. Is France dead? Non.

“Every man gives his life for what he believes. Every woman gives her life for what she believes. Sometimes people believe in little or nothing, and so they give their lives to little or nothing. One life is all we have, and we live it as we believe in living it – and then it’s gone. But to surrender who you are and to live without belief is more terrible than dying – even more terrible than dying young.” – Joan of Arc

  2. FRANCE is dying. No such thing as a society that thrives without religious values.

Catholicism has two problems: masses are held too early on Sunday mornings. Also, the celibacy issue for priests is unrealistic.

IMO, we should follow the mosque schedule, on Fridays. Workers have kids to take care of which makes weekends a difficult time for church attendance. And for those who are single, they’re out having fun on weekends.

    • Sassy, we concur regarding so much, please accept these qualifications.

No such thing as a society that thrives without respect for religious values and conservation of its cultural heritage.

If you can accept what I consider to be non-trivial but not-really-major recalibrations, then we are in violent, raucous agreement as usual.

  3. Sometimes people believe in little or nothing, and so they give their lives to little or nothing.” (hat tip: EB)

There may be no more concise damnation of Atheism than Joan of Arc’s. Full stop.

A certain Alex Hamilton (no relation of the Founding Father) once said:

Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything.
    [emphasis added]

Without the least ambiguity, Hamilton’s axiom transposes to:

“When there’s nothing unorthodox that’s tolerated, Theocratic zealots use anything to sanctify violence.”

“Role of French national hero Joan of Arc could soon be played by a Muslim woman”

Whatever clattering noise you hear in the background isn’t Marianne’s death rattle.

That clanking sound is the Maid of Orléans putting on her armor.

Oh, so many invaders she would have slain to repay the Notre Dame Atrocity. But only so many as she could have had done with before Antichrist Bergoglio burned her alive at the stake, again!

Methinks Micron would have been first on that Saint’s dance card (of death)!
