Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Antifa is Claiming ‘Territories’ in Various Cities

“If fascism ever comes to the United States, it will come in the form of Liberalism.” – Ronald Reagan

Well, those words have proven true beyond all shadow of doubt. The left has shown its disregard for the will and the dignity of the common person in everything it does. Sure, they say that they care about the less fortunate, but they don’t act like it.

Unfortunately, to find out what a political party is actually up to, one has to do more than just listen to what they say. One has to read history, look at research, watch and read the news broadly and be willing to come to independent conclusions.

All of this, apparently, is asking too much of the average college student. It’s even too much to ask of the average college professor, as the institutions they represent rest their arguments again and again on the platitudes of political ideologues who base their thinking in the philosophies of the most murderous regimes of the 20th century.

It’s absolutely astounding. Today, we see police departments standing down at the direction of left-leaning city governments as conservatives are beaten in the streets by Antifa. When conservatives defend themselves, they are arrested.

    • YOU SAW IT HERE FIRST.

The biggest losers in this unrest will be the police.

Antifa will dox any and all honest law enforcement.

      Soon thereafter …

Inevitable vigilante blowback will include doxing the bad cops.

Crooked LEOs—even if they’re “just following orders”—will be out in the cold because honest citizens will never trust them again, and Antifa would like nothing more than to line them up against a wall.

Either way, existing law enforcement will draw some serious fire.

Sickening as it sounds, it might be a mercy if a few of these “blind-eye” cops experienced some unpleasantness. If only, pour encouragé les autres. Delaying any expressions of public dissatisfaction only assures more grievous outcomes for all involved.

Whether they like it or not, police will have to realize which side looks forward to an America that still has honest law enforcement. If a few of these look-away Badge-Warmers™ get their knuckles rapped, maybe they’ll pay better attention to that thingy called, “Rule of Law”.

How can it remain so unapparent that, without Rule of Law, there is no value to ersatz “law and order”? This is where putting legal patches upon an already incoherent crazy quilt of makeshift, spur-of-the-moment, legislation only ends up assuring that the entire top-heavy shithouse superstructure collapses in upon itself. Did not the USSR’s implosion teach everyone this basic lesson?

“I was just following orders”, didn’t work last time and nobody’s buying that bullshit this time around either. That Antifa, much less anybody else, is able to foolishly persuade themselves that Befehl ist Befehl (“an order is an order”) will miraculously serve as an excuse this time, only betrays their true Nazi fascism. It is classic Leftist Magical Thinking.

Indonesia’s domestic terrorist network threatened retribution for Jakarta executing the Bali Atrocity perpetrators. The absurdity of a terrorist group bragging that it would avenge any actual justice visited upon these mass-murderers transcends mere vileness.

So it is with Antifa attempting to locally nullify law enforcement. In effect, this represents a secession of American territory and constitutes an act of war.

And just like the Bali bombers’ avenging cadres threatened in far-off Indonesia, so are those same ominous words looming over our once tranquil shores:

      THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

Antifa and their coterie of cops won’t have it any other way, so why deny them?

      • Apologists for just-following-orders-cops are sounding tinny to me. How far are they prepared to bend themselves before falling on their faces in submission?

  2. France and the Urban Guerrilla Warfare of the Black Blocs

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: France has been contending for years with violent anarchist gangs known as the Black Blocs, who have been piggybacking on the mass demonstrations of the Yellow Vests to commit acts of vandalism and wreak considerable economic damage. The Black Blocs’ destructive riots on the Champs-Élysées prompted the French government to take tougher preventive measures against the gangs, sparking criticism from both right and left. The government will have to keep fighting the Black Blocs and the radicals among the Yellow Vests, who are trying to achieve their economic and political goals through violence.

France is contending with serious challenges that call for a national stocktaking.

The traumatic incident of the fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on April 16, 2019, induced shock and pain as well as feelings of unity and national pride. It prompted an outpouring of funds to renovate the cathedral, as well as admiration for the firefighters who risked their lives to salvage it. Expressions of sympathy from abroad bolstered France’s pride in its historical, artistic, and architectural heritage.

    • To an extent the author is whitewashing the police by saying that the police violence is directed at the :Black Blocks” amd mpt jte demonstrators. We have all seen the videos of the Protesters who have been injured and maimed by the police. It is these actions that are radicalizing protesters, the police brutality not the calls by the “Black Blocks”

This attempt to blacken the protesters may work with the people who don’t read the alternative media but not with those who do.

  3. Russian Plans for This Week’s European Union Elections

    by Con Coughlin
    May 22, 2019 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/14253/russia-eu-elections

No one is working harder to achieve a successful outcome from this week’s European Union elections than Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Even though there is little prospect of Russia ever wanting to join the family of EU nations, that has not stopped Mr Putin from intensifying his efforts to expand his influence over those countries that are members of the European trade bloc.

Consequently, at a time when Moscow is desperate to have the sanctions lifted that have been imposed in response to various Russian acts of provocation, such as last year’s Salisbury poisoning, Mr Putin is investing much time and energy to ensure that a strong pro-Russian lobby is elected to the new EU parliament following Thursday’s Europe-wide ballot.

The EU, together with the US, has been at the forefront of the international campaign to hold Moscow to account for its role in the Salisbury attack in March 2018, when a team of Russian GRU intelligence officers have been accused of attempting to murder former Russian Sergei Skripal with Novichok nerve agent. The attack resulted in the strengthening of the sanctions originally imposed against Moscow in the wake of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, as well as its interference in eastern Ukraine.

  4. Turkey: Erdogan Describes Armenian Genocide as ‘Reasonable Relocation’

At a symposium in Ankara on April 24 — the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeated his distortion and denial of the 1915 mass murder of Christians at the hands of Ottoman Turks. “The relocation of the Armenian gangs and their supporters who massacred the Muslim people, including women and children, in eastern Anatolia, was the most reasonable action that could be taken in such a period,” Erdogan said. This quote was then posted on the official “Turkish Presidency” Twitter page.

“Erdogan’s statement was factually flawed, deceptive and insulting,” Vicken Babkenian, an independent researcher for the Australian Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, told Gatestone in a recent interview.

Babkenian, a descendant of genocide survivors on both sides of his family, explained:

  5. DEBATE: Is an EU Army Possible?

Q: In recent public comments, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron talked about the possibility of a collective European army. This subject had been raised within Europe even prior to the presidency of Donald Trump, who is skeptical about NATO. In 2015, President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker discussed his intention to work toward this end. Despite the establishment of so-called permanent structured cooperation (PESCO), obstacles and difficulties remain. BESA joins the debate by posing the question: Is an EU army possible?

  6. Nigel Farage Tour Bus Threatened By Three Protesters With Milkshakes, According to his Bus Driver

Update: People present at the event maintain there was never a threat. They claim that the people were drinking their chilled beverages and did not intend to throw them.

After having a milkshake thrown at him by an unhinged protester earlier this week, Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party campaign tour bus was threatened by people armed with them once again — according to his bus driver.

Assaulting right-wing figures with milkshakes has become a trend, as it has been encouraged and celebrated by the mainstream media.

On Wednesday the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the nomination of Michael S. Bogren to serve as a United States District Judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan.

During his hearing Missouri Senator Josh Hawley questioned Bogren on his previous comparisons of a Catholic family to the KKK.

    This was an EXPLOSIVE interrogation.
    Hawley was ON FIRE!

Senator Hawley: All I can tell you is, I am SHOCKED by the statements that I read in your briefs. I am SHOCKED by this kind of language. I’m particularly shocked by it in light of the Supreme Court’s clear teaching that this kind of animus and this kind of hateful comparisons are out of step with with the protections of our law and are not permissible!

  9. CBC – UN human rights observers warn Quebec about secularism bill

3 rapporteurs signed letter expressing several ‘concerns’ about religious symbols bill

High-ranking human rights monitors with the United Nations are concerned the Quebec government will violate fundamental freedoms if it moves ahead with legislation to limit where religious symbols can be worn.

Three UN legal experts, known as rapporteurs, signed and sent a letter written in French last week to the Canadian mission in Geneva. They asked the diplomats to share the letter with Quebec’s Legislature.

The letter says the province’s so-called secularism bill, which the Coalition Avenir Québec government is rushing to pass by next month, threatens freedoms protected by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

“We are particularly concerned … about consequences for those people susceptible to being disadvantaged or excluded from a job or public position because of the potential effects of the proposed law,” the letter reads.

Tabled in March, Bill 21 will bar public teachers, government lawyers and police officers from wearing religious symbols at work. It will also require government services to be received without religious garments covering the face.

The bill has already attracted widespread criticism from minority groups and anti-racism advocates in Quebec, who fear it will, among other things, significantly limit work opportunities for Muslim women.

The Quebec government maintains the legislation is moderate and represents the desires of a majority in the province.

But according to the UN observers, if passed, the bill could violate rights to freedom of conscience and religion, as well as a number of equality guarantees contained in the covenant.

    ‘Extremely inappropriate’
The letter also notes the bill doesn’t define what a religious symbol is, adding that it would be “extremely inappropriate” for a government to decide whether a symbol is religious or not.

Critics of the bill, including several teachers unions, highlighted this point repeatedly during the six days of legislative hearings that wrapped up last week.

It is unclear, for instance, whether the Star of David is a religious or political symbol.

The letter goes on to take issue with the requirement that government services be received with an uncovered face, a measure that singles out Muslim women who wear the niqab.

“The bill constitutes a restriction, or limitation, of the freedom to express religion or belief,” the letter reads.

At multiple points, the letter reminds the Canadian government that it is bound by various human rights instruments, including the covenant on civil and political rights, which it signed in 1976. Quebec is also bound by these agreements.

The letter is signed by the rapporteur for minority relations, Fernand de Varennes; the rapporteur for racism, E. Tendayi Achiume; and the rapporteur for religious freedom, Ahmed Shaheed.

It closes with a series of questions about how minority rights will be protected once the legislation is passed. The rapporteur also wants to know how minority groups will be consulted in the legislative process.

Of the 36 groups and individuals who were invited by the Quebec government to take part in the legislative hearings for the bill, only two represented religious communities in the province.

    Rules broken, lawyer says

Pearl Eliadis, a Montreal human rights lawyer with extensive experience working with the UN, said it is noteworthy the letter was written in French.

“The United Nations is signalling … that majority will is constrained or bound by or limited by rules about how you treat minorities,” she told CBC News after consulting the letter.

“And those rules have been broken in this case. They have manifestly been broken in this case.”

Quebec Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette, the bill’s sponsor, has received the letter and is “analyzing it in detail,” a spokesperson for the minister said in a brief written statement Tuesday.

“The government of Quebec is proud of Bill 21,” the statement said. “It is pragmatic, applicable and moderate. It reflects the consensus of the majority of Quebecers.”

But Hélène David, the provincial Liberal critic for secularism issues, says the UN letter “underscores once again the attack on fundamental rights and the lack of justification for such a measure.”

In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism Minister Pablo Rodriguez did not comment on the UN letter but said the federal government’s position is clear: “It’s not up to politicians to tell people what to wear or what not to wear. Canada is a secular and neutral state, and that is reflected in our institutions.”

“The Quebec government’s bill has raised numerous questions. We will continue to follow it very closely.”

While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has criticized the bill (as have the federal NDP and Conservatives), he hasn’t indicated whether the federal government will intervene if it is passed.

The letter itself carries no legal weight. But it could provide ammunition to groups who will seek to challenge the law before the UN’s Human Rights Committee, Eliadis said.

Such challenges can take several years before the committee offers a decision (known as a “view”). When they are delivered, though, the federal government comes under considerable pressure to comply.

But beyond its possible legal ramifications, the UN letter indicates that what is at stake with Bill 21 is Quebec’s reputation as a tolerant society, Eliadis said.

“I think the average person should care,” she added.

“I think many people in Quebec do care because they understand that what the Quebec government is setting aside are our most fundamental values as a nation.”

  10. Family of Palestinian Murdered in Turkey: Egypt Approves Autopsy (aawsat, may 22, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1734291/family-palestinian-murdered-turkey-egypt-approves-autopsy

“The Egyptian Public Prosecutor’s Office has decided to perform another autopsy on the body of Zaki Mubarak, said his family who has claimed that he was tortured by Turkish authorities.

After checking the body of the Palestinian man on its arrival in Egypt, the family saw the signs of torture.

“His tongue was removed and we saw marks of torture on the corpse,” said Abs Mubarak, his cousin, who is in Cairo.

He continued that there were torture marks on the neck and head. There were also signs that his hands were cuffed behind his back, and a hole on the bottom of his right foot likely caused by a sharp electronic machine.

During a phone call with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Abs said that after the autopsy is over, the family will have the choice to send the body to Palestine.

His Brother Zakaria Mubarak told Asharq Al-Awsat earlier that the family has called on all international bodies and organizations to set up an independent commission to investigate Zaki’s death.

The 55-year-old man had traveled to Turkey after his retirement to search for a job, he added.

The Istanbul prosecutor’s office had claimed that a man was found hanging in his solitary confinement at Silivri Penitentiaries Campus. Turkey claims that Mubarak had confessed to spying on Arab citizens, and was facing espionage charges.

The Arab Organization for Human Rights denounced Turkey for torturing the Palestinian detainee to death, and demanded that the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment sends a committee to examine the body and stop the Turkish authorities from hiding their crime.”

    • The Egyptian Public Prosecutor’s Office has decided to perform another autopsy on the body of Zaki Mubarak, said his family who has claimed that he was tortured by Turkish authorities.

A few more autopsies and old Zaki “Za’atar” Mubarak will be minced enough for a batch of Blackpool kebabs. And wouldn’t you know it? I just had to confirm it was Blackpool and what sprang up?!? (PC will be nodding his head…):

‘I NO LONGER LOVE HIM’ Mum of girl ‘cut up into kebab’ reveals on Jeremy Kyle her husband is a cross-dresser and she stabbed him – but they’re still together

Karen Downes, 53, attacked husband Bob after he said he was ‘glad’ their daughter Charlene was dead

She also admitted cutting her husband with a vegetable knife when he goaded her by saying he was glad their daughter was dead and that he hoped her body would never be found.

Karen said the ordeal triggered the end of her love for him- but insists she will stand by him for the sake of their daughter, who disappeared at 14 in 2003 and was thought to have been murdered…

… He admitted that his cross-dressing secret put an unbearable strain on their relationship, at a time when both parents were struggling to cope with Charlene’s disappearance.

Bob said: “I still love Karen and I always will but she doesn’t love me. But what can I expect? I am devastated that the love isn’t there for me but we are still together.”

… Two local takeaway workers stood trial for Charlene’s murder in May 2007 but were not convicted.

The prosecution claimed that Charlene’s body had been cut up and minced into kebabs in a Blackpool takeaway.

After a planned retrial was abandoned in 2008, Karen began to give up hope of ever finding the truth and came close to suffering a nervous breakdown.

NR: The parents of Charlene Downes may as well have dismembered their own daughter and ground her up themselves. The horrors this young girl went through at home may as well have seen them thrust this child into the arms of her killers. What lass would want to return home to that loveless filth?

I suppose there’s still some shred of hope for civility in UK journalism. At least they didn’t call Miss Downes, “kebab girl”.

PS: It’s times like these where I wish my sense of due diligence wasn’t so ingrained. I really didn’t want to know the hell that child leapt from into her porcelain grave. Back in the day, didn’t enraged mobs simply take people like Charlene’s parents and just beat them to death?

      If not, why not?

    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190522-two-us-saudi-spies-sentenced-in-iran/

“Two spies with alleged ties to US and Saudi intelligence services have been sentenced in Iran.

The Iranian judiciary spokesman, Gholam Hossein Esmaili, told reporters of the sentencing during a press conference, according to the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA).

Esmaili declined to provide further information about the names of the defendants or their sentences.

The imprisonment of the alleged US and Saudi spies comes at a time of strained relationships between Tehran and Washington.

US President Donald Trump has flirted with the idea of military conflict with Iran, accusing Tehran of attacking US interests through its proxy militias in Yemen and Iraq. Earlier this month, the USS Abraham Lincoln strike force was deployed to the Arabian Gulf as a deterent.

Last week, an Iranian woman was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for allegedly spying for British intelligence services.

“An Iranian who was in charge of [the] Iran desk in the British Council and was cooperating with Britain’s intelligence agency… was sentenced to ten years in prison after clear confessions,” Esmaili was quoted as saying by Fars news agency.

Earlier this year, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif offered a prisoner swap between British-Iranian dual citizen, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and Iranians awaiting extradition to the United States. Zaghari-Ratcliffe was sentenced to three to five years imprisonment for allegedly plotting the overthrow of the Iranian establishment.

    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-condemns-claims-by-greek-politicians-143610

“Turkey on May 21 denounced some radical groups and politicians in Greece for coming up with “imaginary claims” and distorting historical facts on former’s commemoration of May 19, the day Turks celebrate as the start of their independence war in 1919.

“The attempts of some radical groups to cast a shadow on this meaningful day with their imaginary claims targeting our history, with their activities seeking to fuel hatred against Turkey as well as the statements of some politicians in Greece that distort historical facts for their political motives cannot be accepted,” Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry stressed that May 19 marked the beginning of the country’s national struggle – which led to the foundation of the Republic of Turkey — and the day was “celebrated with pride”.

“We remind the claimants of these unsubstantiated allegations that the responsibility of Greece for the atrocities committed by her army,” the statement said, adding Greece violated laws of war during her invasion of Anatolia.

It added that the atrocities by the Greek Army against Turks, during the occupation, reached an inconceivable magnitude and Greece’s allies established an inquiry commission and identified the crimes of its army.

The statement concluded that nomination of Turkey’s founding leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk for the Nobel Peace Prize by Eleftherios Venizelos, the then prime minister of Greece, in 1934 constituted the “clearest proof” showing that there was no such historical issue between the two countries in contrast to the claims of some “irresponsible politicians and radical Greeks”.

May 19 is a milestone in Turkish history as it is the day when Mustafa Kemal, later to become Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, arrived in the city of Samsun from Istanbul to organize the war that saw the remnants of the Ottoman Empire transformed into modern Turkey four years later.

Ataturk dedicated May 19 to youth of Turkish nation as Youth and Sports Day, a national holiday that sees young people stage sporting and cultural activities and official ceremonies organized across the nation.”

Turkey is expected to make an application to Romania for extradition of the eight fishermen, who are now in the Romanian city of Constanta, said Metin Gündo?du, Turkish deputy for the Black Sea province of Ordu.

Saim Tando?an, mayor of the Per?embe district in Ordu, said that the fishermen had set sail from Per?embe and that the incident happened during the fishermen’s attempt to hunt the flatfish, turbot, in international waters.

The three injured fishermen are continuing to receive treatment in Constanta, while the other five fishermen’s condition is good, Tando?an said on May 21.

The incident happened on May 20 off the coast of Constanta.

The Romanian Coast Guard stated that the Observation System (SCOMAR) observed a fishing vessel operating in Romanian territorial waters at 52 nautical miles, which equals 1,852 meters, east of Constanta at around 6.50 a.m. on May 20.

The fishing vessel, which carried the name “Baba ?enol,” had a Turkish flag and did not respond to verbal warnings, the Romanian Coast Guard said.

The coast guard fired warning shots, and the Turkish fishing vessel was stopped at 2.40 p.m., at which time border guards approached the boat. The fishermen were then taken aboard the Romanian coastal protection boat.

The coast guard said that of the three injured Turkish fishermen, two were injured in their legs and one in his hip.

After arriving at the port of Mangalya, the fishermen were carried to a health unit by a Constanta ambulance.”

  17. “John Brennan Makes a Creepy Threat Against President Trump.” David J. Harris Jr. – May 20, 2019

    Excerpt:

“Any man can make mistakes, but only an idiot persists in his error.” Marcus Tullius Cicero, (106-43 BC)

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Cicero but he had the same problem that President Trump faces. An aggressive Deep State. The Deep State plotted to kill Cicero and take over the Roman Empire for Marc Anthony. Five conspirators were put to death and the Deep State declared Cicero to be an enemy of Rome and had the military assassinate him without a trial.

How much does that sound like what Trump is facing? To make it even creepier, you need to know a little history about John Brennan. In 2008, he was under investigation for accessing the visa records of Barack Obama (With his permission) John McCain and Hillary Clinton (Without their permission) Some believe he was in there altering Obama’s records to hide some of his travel and accessed the other two as a cover. One of Brennan’s employees was nabbed by the police and he agreed to cooperate with the DA and to testify in front of a grand jury. He never got the chance. He was found in his car, his body riddled with bullets. Lt. Quarles Harris Jr was dead and so was the investigation.

  18. German police launch raids on Iraqi organized crime gang (DW, May 22, 2019)
    https://www.dw.com/en/german-police-launch-raids-on-iraqi-organized-crime-gang/a-48824157

“Heavily armed police have carried out a series of coordinated raids on the homes of members of the “Al-Salam-313” group. The targets are suspected of people smuggling as well as dealing in narcotics.

German police carried out early-morning raids at apartments in 11 cities on Wednesday as part of an operation targeting organized crime.

Hundreds of officers were involved in the raids in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, focusing on the Cologne area and the Ruhr Valley.

A spokeswoman for police in the city of Essen, Sylvia Czapiewski, said authorities targeted the homes of 34 suspects.

“We have been carrying out an investigation into a large group of people for some considerable time,” she said.

Those targeted were suspected of involvement in people smuggling, as well as trading in weapons, narcotics and false IDs. One person was arrested.

North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul told journalists that the seized evidence must be examined to determine whether more arrests would be made.

    Muhammad’s warriors

The targets are members of the “Al-Salam-313” gang, according to a report in the German daily Bild. They refer to themselves as “Warriors of Muhammad” and the number 313 has a religious connotation.

The gang members are part of the Shiite denomination who believe that the hidden Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi will return to Earth with 313 companions. The term Mahdi means Redeemer, which therefore means that he is regarded as similar to a messiah in Islam.

“This is why they refer to themselves as Muhammad’s companions or warriors,” said one of the investigators.

In addition to dealing in narcotics and weapons, the gang members are suspected of having supported militias back in Iraq with the profits from their various activities.”

    • Biker gang raid: What do we know about Al-Salam-313? (DW, May 22, 2019)
      https://www.dw.com/en/biker-gang-raid-what-do-we-know-about-al-salam-313/a-48839866

“In a dawn raid, some 500 police officers stormed 43 properties in eleven cities across the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. What exactly do we know so far about the group that was targeted? DW investigates.

The objective of Wednesday’s major raid on the Al-Salam-313 biker gang was to collect and prepare evidence, and its preparation took several months, said Herbert Reul, interior minister for the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The gang is suspected of having committed a variety of crimes ranging from illegal weapons trading, people smuggling, passport forgery, and drug distribution. Police have identified 34 suspects, who are of Iraqi and Syrian descent. The minister said the raid dealt a “blow to organized crime.”

Prior to the raid, DW had independently researched the group in connection with claims of its criminal dealings and threats on fellow Iraqi emigres. DW spoke to one Iraqi national living in Germany, under condition of anonymity, who said that the group had sent her death threats for leading a Western lifestyle. She said she knew of other exiled Iraqis in Europe who also report having been intimidated by Al-Salam-313.

On May 10, DW requested that the domestic intelligence agency of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany’s most populous state, reveal what it knows about the group. In response, the agency refused to share its intelligence, saying on a phone call that this information is classified.

‘Those that come to Europe must behave’

The Al-Salam-313 group has a Facebook page, called ALSALAM-Germany — though nobody appears to have posted there since May 2017. It also has published a seven-minute YouTube video featuring muscular gang members clad in leather vests and sunglasses. They show off luxury cars and motorbikes, driving in formation. Against the backdrop of dramatic music, gang members pose around their leader. Arms crossed, the leader looks into the camera and introduces himself by saying: “Peace be upon you. I’m Abu Mehdi (Mohammad Bunia) from Salam crew 313.” He says the group was founded in 2016 and that it is active in several European countries, including Germany, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. “We have no qualms with any human,” he states. And then, presumably in reference to Iraqis who fled to Europe, says: “Those that come to Europe must behave.”

The leader then says his group exists to “help people, not cause problems.” But he also claims that “some of you need a good beating, Arab style. And you know exactly what I mean by this.” A bit later, Abu Mehdi insists his group is not a mafia-like outfit. His alias, incidentally, has a specific meaning: In Shia Islam, “Mehdi” or “Mahdi” refers to the descendant of Prophet Mohammed, who rules before Judgment Day to rid the world of evil.

And the number “313,” as referenced in the group’s name, also has particular meaning in this context. Shiites believe that the redeemer will return to earth with 313 companions.

In the group’s propaganda video, a vehicle can be seen whose German number plate begins with letter “E,” indicating the car is registered in the German city of Essen. This is where Abu Mehdi lives. Already in December 2017, local German media reported on an attack on the gang leaders’ hangout in Essen. The incident reportedly involved a rival Lebanese gang and revolved around extortion.

In its 2018 report on clan-related crime, NRW’s Criminal Police Office does not mention Al-Salam-313 by name. Yet the agency explicitly notes that in recent months Turkish, Kurdish and Lebanese clans have apparently been overpowered by rival actors of Iraqi and Syrian descent. The report states that clans from these war-torn countries are “perceived as particularly assertive and violent” within this milieu.

      Ties to Iraqi Mahdi Army?

The Al-Salam-313 group, though, is apparently not just a band of ordinary criminals, so to speak. NRW’s state interior ministry confirmed to DW that it suspects the gang may also be involved in politically- and religiously-motivated crimes. Authorities suspect the group of assisting militant extremists in Iraq.

The group is rumored to have very close ties to so-called Mahdi Army aligned with Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. That militia sports a white dove as its insignia — as does the Al-Salam-313 group.

According to US intelligence, the Mahdi Army comprises tens of thousands of fighters, and was formed after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. After the Iraqi national army was demobilized, and much of the country’s police force retired, numerous militias filled the subsequent security vacuum. Today, several armed Shiite militias are active alongside the Mahdi Army in Iraq.

Many of them are supported by Iran, which supplies funding, weapons and training. They played a major role in assisting the US fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS), an extremist Sunni militia.”

  22. CBC – Quebec man found guilty of inciting hatred in video praising mosque shooter

Pierre Dion’s YouTube video targeted Muslims, judge ruled

A Terrebonne, Que., man has been found guilty of inciting hatred in a video posted to YouTube on the second anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting.

Pierre Dion posted the video on Jan. 29, two years to the day after Alexandre Bissonnette opened fire at the mosque, killing six people and seriously injuring several others.

Two days later, Dion was arrested at his home north of Montreal.

Bissonnette was sentenced to life in prison in February with no chance of parole for 40 years.

In the YouTube video, Dion praised Bissonnette and said he wanted Quebecers to “wake up.”

Quebec court Judge Gilles Garneau ruled that Dion’s video targeted Muslims.

“What the judge determined is that what Mr. Dion said on his YouTube videos constituted an incitement of hate,” Crown prosecutor Karine Lagacé-Paquette said Wednesday at the Laval courthouse.

She said the prosecution is seeking community work as his punishment, and the defence is asking for a fine and probation.

Dion’s sentencing is scheduled for June 11.
