Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Turkey’s Greek, Armenian, and Assyrian Christians, which predominated in the region before its colonisation by Turkic Muslims, were subjected to a “staggered campaign of genocide” from 1894 to 1924, which reduced them from 20 per cent of the population to less than 2 per cent, according to Israeli researchers.
Dr Benny Morris and Dr Dror Ze’evi, of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba, Israel, say that the British, French, Turkish, and U.S. archives, along with “some Greek materials” and German and Austro-Hungarian foreign ministry papers, confirm “Turkey’s Armenian, Greek and Assyrian (or Syriac) communities disappeared as a result of a staggered campaign of genocide beginning in 1894, perpetrated against them by their Muslim neighbours.”

Summarising findings published in full in their book The Thirty-Year Genocide, Turkey’s Destruction of Its Christian Minorities, 1894-1924 in a Wall Street Journal essay, Morris and Ze’evi identified a “strikingly consistent pattern of ethno-religious atrocity over three decades, perpetrated by the Turkish government, army, police and populace” against Asia Minor’s Christian minorities, extending well beyond the infamous Armenian genocide — still denied by the Turkish government — of 1915-16.

  2. Former Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., says there are unreleased transcripts of recorded conversations between FBI informants and former Trump campaign associate George Papadopoulos that “has the potential to be a game changer.”

In a Fox News interview with Maria Bartiromo on Sunday, the former House Oversight Committee chairman said when the FBI listens in on phone calls or sends in an informant wearing a wire then “there’s a transcript of that” and that “one in particular has the potential to actually persuade people.”

In laying out a series of questions about the origins of the counterintelligence investigation into President Trump’s campaign and the FBI and Justice Department’s handling of the operation, Gowdy listed a series of questions he thinks need to be answered, including: “Where are the transcripts, if any exist, between the informants and the telephone calls to George Papadopoulos?”

Politico has viewed three-and-a-half hours of footage from Bernie and Jane Sanders’ 1988 ‘honeymoon’ to the Soviet Union, and judging by their description, it looks like the footage might make it difficult for Sanders to distance himself from his support for Communist regimes both the USSR and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, where he also visited.

    Bernie

In the footage, Sanders, often seated under or near portraits of Vladimir Lenin, would extol the virtues of Soviet life.

The hours of footage include a scene of Sanders sitting with his delegation at a table under a portrait of Vladimir Lenin. Sanders can also be heard extolling the virtues of Soviet life and culture, even as he acknowledges some of their shortcomings. There are flashes of humor, too, such as his host warning the American guests not to cross the KGB, or else.

Sanders and his entourage visited three cities, Yaroslavl, Moscow and Leningrad as they worked to establish a ‘sister city’-type relationship between Yaroslavl and Burlington. The trip happened in 1988, as Sanders was nearing the end of his second term as Burlington’s mayor.

The video also paints a fuller picture of why Sanders ventured to the land of America’s No. 1 enemy in the midst of the Cold War, the anti-war idealism that fueled his journey, and what he found when he got there.

Over the course of 10 days, Sanders, who was then the mayor of Burlington, and his dozen-member delegation traveled to three cities: Moscow, Yaroslavl and Leningrad, now known as St. Petersburg. Their goal was to establish a “sister city” relationship with Yaroslavl, a community along the Volga River home to about 500,000 people. At the time, the Soviet Union was beginning to open itself to the world, if only slightly — and Sanders was a self-described socialist with an unusually large interest in foreign affairs for a mayor.

If this is what passes for humor with THE BURN, then electing him means the joke’s on US(A). Burn in hell, Bernie for sucking on succoring America’s arch enemas enemies.

Cannot anyone integrate the enharmonic convergence of Communist Sanders and Hyper Corrupt 0’Hillary?!? These two sourest of notes come from a discordant ensemble whose position on the bass clef of lowness defies even the intonation of a slack key doghouse fiddle.

The DNC’s base treachery of punching 0’Hillary’s ticket to drum Sanders out before he went orbital was a block below his butt-spliced belt that papers didn’t have enough grit to cover with anything more than abrasively rubbing the public’s nose into the swirl marks of a Clinton toilet so full of Arkancidal shit that these assholes have crap into it from a very great height to avoid squatting in their own filth.

Sanders? A thousand of his spines wouldn’t have half the discs needed to angle die grind his caked electrocoating of Marxist treason.

  4. Peacekeeper killed in attacks on Nigeria and Chad troops in Mali (thedefensepost, May 19, 2019)
    https://thedefensepost.com/2019/05/19/mali-nigeria-peacekeeper-killed-tessalit-chad-injured-timbuktu/

“A Nigerian peacekeeper was killed and another injured in an attack in Timbuktu and three Chadian peacekeepers were injured in a roadside bomb attack in Tessalit, the U.N. said on Saturday, May 19.

The Nigerian peacekeeper “succumbed to his wounds following the armed attack by unidentified assailants” in Timbuktu in central Mali, a statement said. A second peacekeeper who was wounded in the gun attack is in intensive care, Studio Tamani reported.

Separately, three Chadian peacekeepers were injured when their mine-protected vehicle “hit an improvised explosive device” in Tessalit, which is around 480 km (250 miles) north of Gao, in the Kidal region of Mali’s desert north.

The statement noted that attacks against peacekeepers can constitute war crimes under international law.

The MINUSMA stabilization mission in Mali which began in 2013 is considered one the most dangerous U.N. peacekeeping missions, and attacks against blue helmets in the center and north of the country are common. Saturday’s incident brings to 18 the number of peacekeepers that have died this year alone.

A peacekeeper was killed and four others injured in a roadside bomb attack on a convoy in central Mali’s Mopti region on April 20.

On April 3, two Chadian peacekeepers were injured in a mortar and gun attack on a U.N. base in Kidal.

The recent unrest in the Sahel region began in Mali in 2012 with Tuareg separatist uprising against the state, which was exploited by Islamist extremists linked to al-Qaeda who took key cities in the desert north.

France began its Operation Serval military intervention in its former colony early the next year, driving the jihadists from the towns, but the militant groups morphed into more nimble formations operating in rural areas, sometimes winning over local populations by providing basic services and protection from bandits.

Large swathes of Mali remain outside government control, and the insurgency has gradually spread to central and southern regions of the country and across the borders into neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.

A peace deal was signed in 2015 between the government and some armed groups designed to isolate the militant Islamists, but the jihadist insurgency has shown no signs of weakening.

The French mission in Mali evolved in August 2014 into the current Operation Barkhane, which has 4,500 personnel deployed with a mandate for counter-terrorism operations across the Sahel region, with 2,700 soldiers in Mali to support poorly-equipped local military forces.

Troops deployed to Barkhane work alongside the G5 Sahel joint counter-terrorism force that aims to train and deploy up to 5,000 personnel as well as MINUSMA, which in March had 12,644 military and 1,734 police personnel, 454 staff officers and 39 experts deployed from more than 50 U.N. partner nations.”

  6. ‘If Tehran wants to fight, it will be official end of Iran’ (saudigazette, May 20, 2019)
    http://saudigazette.com.sa/article/566739/World/Mena/If-Tehran-wants-to-fight-it-will-be-official-end-of-Iran

“US President Donald Trump threatened Iran in a tweet on Sunday, raising concerns about a potential US-Iran conflict at a time when tensions between Washington and Tehran have risen.

“If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again,” Trump said in a tweet.

Trump has tightened economic sanctions against Iran, and his administration says it has built up the US military presence in the region. It accuses Iran of threats to US troops and interests.

Meanwhile, Trump’s strong Republican ally, Senator Lindsey Graham, launched a broadside against Iran in a tweet, saying Iran is causing this crisis – not the Trump Administration.

“While no one wants a war, it must be clear to Iran that aggression against American interests will be met with overwhelming force and the conflict will end on America’s terms.” — Agencies”

  9. Pakistan army plans new unit to protect CPEC projects (gulfnews, May 19, 2019)
    https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/pakistan/pakistan-army-plans-new-unit-to-protect-cpec-projects-1.64050168

“Pakistan’s army will raise another division-size special force to protect Chinese nationals and projects under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), military spokesman Major-General Asif Gafoor has said.

The announcement comes days after the brazen terror attack on a luxury hotel in Balochistan.

Describing the US$50 billion (Dh183 billion) China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a living example of the deep-rooted friendship between Pakistan and China, Major-General Gafoor, Director-General of the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), said the army was fully determined to ensure the security of the project.

Addressing Chinese journalists in Rawalpindi on Saturday, Gafoor said Pakistan military had raised a whole division-size force to protect the project and they were planning to deploy another division for this purpose.

Earlier reports said a Special Security Division (SSD) comprising 9,000 Pakistan Army soldiers and 6,000 para-military forces personnel has been set up for the security of the CPEC project and Chinese nationals working on it.

Gafoor said Pakistan faced a very challenging war against terrorism during the last two decades, and now the security situation was under control.

Talking about the role of CPEC in the country, he said the economic prosperity brought about by the mega projects will defeat the motives of terrorists as, with the success of project, more employment and business opportunities will be unlocked, and people’s livelihoods will improve, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

He said the security situation in Balochistan had improved since the launch of the CPEC and now there was better infrastructure.

As many Chinese projects are underway, he said, the security, development and investment situation will improve significantly.

The army spokesman’s comments come days after militants attacked the Pearl Continental luxury hotel in the port city of Gwadar in the restive Balochistan province, killing at least eight people, including four civilians and a Pakistan Navy soldier.

The attack was claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army.

The group was also involved in the attack at the Chinese consulate in Karachi last year.

Gafoor said: “Today’s Gwadar is not what it used to be two years ago and in future it will be on par with the ports of developed countries”.

Gwadar port is one of the focal points of CPEC, with many Chinese workers, as well as Pakistanis from other provinces, working at the port.

China is investing heavily in Balochistan under CPEC.

Launched in 2015, CPEC is a planned network of roads, railways and energy projects linking China’s resource-rich Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region with Pakistan’s strategic Gwadar Port on the Arabian Sea.

Highlighting opportunities in Pakistan, Gafoor said the country was doing its best to create an environment where investors could come and carry out their business in peace, as the security situation had greatly improved.

“Though there are a few sporadic terrorist incidents, investors should not be discouraged,” he added.”

  10. President Erdo?an vows to deliver 2023 targets ‘despite foreign interventions’ (hurriyetdailynews, may 19, 2019)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/president-erdogan-vows-to-deliver-2023-targets-despite-foreign-interventions-143545

“The Turkish government will exert the utmost effort to deliver targets set for 2023, the centennial of the Turkish Republic, in the areas of democracy and economy “despite continued interventions by some foreign powers,” President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has said.

“The level Turkey has reached in the freedoms and economy reveals that we are step by step coming closer to our 2023 targets. However, it’s also a fact that the problems we had to survive in the last six years have slowed us down,”

Erdo?an said in his address at a ceremony held in the Black Sea province of Samsun on the occasion of the centennial of the Independence War.

Erdo?an recalled that his government set these targets in 2011 as the most assertive development and democracy plan of Turkish history. These targets include making Turkey one of biggest 10 economies in 2023.

“Despite everything, we are sticking to our 2023 goals. We have set a special team in the presidency to this end. A wave of attacks in the fields of security and economy has not ended yet. We are foiling a new plot every other day,” he stressed.

These attacks include interventions on the Turkish economy through interest and currency rates, open and covert embargoes and sanctions threats, Erdo?an said, suggesting that all these actions are “part of a special plot against Turkey.”

Recalling that his governments have been ruling Turkey for the last 17 years, Erdo?an said that they will continue to move towards delivering the targets set for the centennial despite “malign interventions by some foreign powers.””

  11. Turkey to receive F-35 jets ‘sooner or later’: Erdo?an (hurriyetdailynews, May 19, 2019)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-to-receive-f-35-jets-sooner-or-later-erdogan-143533

“The F-35 jets, developed by nine countries including Turkey and the United States, will be delivered to Ankara eventually, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an said late on May 18.

“Sooner or later, we will receive the delivery of the F-35s, their equipment, and S-400s, too, will come to our country,” Erdo?an said after a fast-breaking dinner attended by representatives of youth organizations at the historical Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul.

“There is absolutely no question of stepping back on the S-400 issue. It’s a done deal,” Erdo?an added, referring to the air defense systems expected to be delivered by Russia until the end of this year.

Tensions between the U.S. and Turkey have reached a fever pitch in recent months with Turkey set to begin receiving the advanced S-400 Russian surface-to-air missile system that Washington said will jeopardize Turkey’s role in the F-35 fighter jet program and which could trigger congressional sanctions.

Turkey decided in 2017 to purchase the S-400 system following protracted efforts to purchase air defense systems from the U.S. with no success.”

    • Deutsche Pravda – Austria: Kurz calls for new elections after Strache scandal topples coalition

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has called for early elections after a corruption scandal brought down his government’s junior coalition partner.

The announcement comes after Austria’s vice chancellor, Heinz-Christian Strache, was caught on video taken on the island of Ibiza apparently offering lucrative government contracts to a prospective Russian investor in exchange for help influencing Austria’s 2017 elections in favor of his far-right Freedom party.

Strache resigned from his post on Saturday after Der Spiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung released the video.

  13. Integration call or stigmatization? Austria’s ‘10 commandments of immigration’ prompts debate

The so-called ‘10 commandments of immigration,’ a set of vague rules for migrants tabled by an anti-immigration politician in Lower Austria, has provoked heated debate
