Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Prime Minister to attend the Christchurch Call meeting on eliminating terrorist and violent extremist content online

    Ottawa, Ontario – May 8, 2019

The recent attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand, have highlighted the urgent need for governments, tech companies, and civil society to work together to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that he will travel to Paris, France, from May 15 to 17, to meet with government leaders and representatives of prominent social media companies to discuss concrete solutions to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.

During the meeting, government leaders will explore how they can – and must – work more closely with the tech industry, especially social media platforms, to stop the internet from being used as a tool to organize and promote terrorism and violent extremism.

During his visit, Prime Minister Trudeau will also attend VivaTech, an important gathering of technology leaders and start-ups, and will meet with Canadian start-ups. While at VivaTech, the Prime Minister will deliver remarks on trust in the digital world.

At the same time, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains, will attend the G7 Meeting of Digital Ministers, which will focus on combating online hate and abuse.

    Quotes
“Social media and other online platforms have connected people in many positive and unprecedented ways. But they have also increasingly become used as tools to incite, publish, and broadcast extremist violence and hatred. Governments and social media companies share an urgent responsibility to build a coordinated global response to eliminate this content – and make sure people can continue to have trust in online spaces.”
—The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

    Quick Facts
In December 2018, the Government of Canada launched the National Strategy on Countering Radicalization to Violence, which outlines Canada’s approach and priorities to prevent the kind of radicalization that leads to violence to begin with.

Radicalization to violence happens when a person or group takes on extremist beliefs that lead to them advocating violence and, possibly, taking part in terrorist activity.

The Canada Centre for Community Engagement and Prevention of Violence leads the Government of Canada’s efforts to counter radicalization to violence, and works with all levels of governments, not-for-profit organizations, communities, youth, frontline practitioners, academia, law enforcement, and international organizations.

Viva Technology or “VivaTech” is a three-day event bringing together the world’s leaders in technology and business with the most promising start-ups and disruptors of tomorrow to explore transformational ideas on a global scale. Since its inception in 2016, VivaTech has welcomed more than 100,000 attendees – among them 9,000 of the most innovative start-ups in the world.

  4. 8 Terror-Related Suspects Reportedly Eliminated in Saudi Arabia (VIDEOS) (sputniknews, May 11, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201905111074924916-saud-arabia-terrorists-ops/

“At least 8 suspected terrorists were killed in a police raid in Saudi Arabia’s eastern Qatif region, AFP reported Saturday, citing Saudi state-run media.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), citing a state security spokesman, said the recently-formed “terrorist” cell in a Shiite minority area was preparing to carry out terror activities against the security of the country, according to AFP.

Meanwhile, local netizens have posted the alleged footage of the skirmish between terrorist suspects and the Saudi security forces.

The eastern regions of Saudi Arabia are populated by a Shiite minority that is averse to the country’s authorities. The area is prone to attacks on security forces.

According to the Saudi Gazette media outlet, the security forces busted the terrorist cell at an apartment in the Sanabis neighbourhood of Tarout town in Qatif at around 10 a.m. local time on Saturday.

In a pre-emptive security operation, the forces cordoned off the area and ordered the terror suspects to surrender. Ignoring the warning, the terrorists opened fire at security forces. In the skirmish, all eight members of the suspected cell were eliminated, according to the Saudi Gazette.

According to a statement of the spokesman of the Presidency carried by the SPA, no residents of the neighbourhood or local civilians were injured during the operation.

The oil-producing province is reportedly a regular flashpoint between the Sunni-dominated government and minority Shiites who complain of alleged discrimination. Saudi authorities, however, deny allegations of mistreatment.”

  5. Islamic State claims ‘province’ in India for first time after clash in Kashmir (reuters, May 11, 2019)
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-kashmir-islamic-state/islamic-state-claims-province-in-india-for-first-time-after-clash-in-kashmir-idUSKCN1SH08J

“Islamic State (IS) claimed for the first time that it has established a “province” in India, after a clash between militants and security forces in the contested Kashmir region killed a militant with alleged ties to the group.

IS’s Amaq News Agency late on Friday announced the new province, that it called “Wilayah of Hind”, in a statement that also claimed IS inflicted casualties on Indian army soldiers in the town of Amshipora in the Shopian district of Kashmir.

The IS statement corresponds with an Indian police statement on Friday that a militant called Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi was killed in an encounter in Shopian.

IS’s statement establishing the new province appears to be designed to bolster its standing after the group was driven from its self-styled “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in April, where at one point it controlled thousands of miles of territory.

IS has stepped up hit-and-run raids and suicide attacks, including taking responsibility for the Easter Sunday bombing in Sri Lanka that killed at least 253 people.

“The establishment of a ‘province’ in a region where it has nothing resembling actual governance is absurd, but it should not be written off,” said Rita Katz, director of the SITE Intel Group that tracks Islamic extremists.

“The world may roll its eyes at these developments, but to jihadists in these vulnerable regions, these are significant gestures to help lay the groundwork in rebuilding the map of the IS ‘caliphate’.”

Sofi had been involved in several militant groups in Kashmir for more than a decade before pledging allegiance to Islamic State, according to a military official on Saturday and an interview given by Sofi to a Srinagar-based magazine sympathetic to IS.

He was suspected of several grenade attacks on security forces in the region, police and military sources said.

“It was a clean operation and no collateral damage took place during the exchange of fire,” a police spokesman said in the statement on Friday’s encounter.

The military official said it was possible that Sofi had been the only militant left in Kashmir associated with IS.

Separatists have for decades fought an armed conflict against Indian rule in Muslim-majority Kashmir. The majority of these groups want independence for Kashmir or to join India’s arch-rival Pakistan. They have not, like Islamic State, sought to establish an empire across the Muslim world.

Nuclear powers India and Pakistan have fought two wars over Kashmir, and came to the brink of a third earlier this year after a suicide attack by a Pakistan-based militant group killed at least 40 paramilitary police in the Indian-controlled portion of the region.

A spokesman for India’s home ministry, which is responsible for security in Kashmir, did not respond to a request for comment.”

  6. FBI uncovers homegrown terror training camp in Alabama

WASHINGTON (SBG) – At first glance, it looks like an abandoned dump.

But this plot of land in Macon County, Alabama is described in an FBI search warrant as a “makeshift military-style obstacle course” belonging to a small group of terrorists led by Siraj Wahhaj who owned the property up a long dirt road but just a few miles from downtown Tuskegee.

“Just because you’re in a small town or a small state does not mean you might not potentially have individuals engaged in the types of activities that would call into question threats to national security,” says Tim Fuhrman, Former Special Agent with the FBI field office in Mobile, Alabama.

The property, similar to another compound in New Mexico the group is now linked to where federal prosecutors say Wahhaj and four other suspects were training children to carry out deadly terror attacks on American soil.

FBI Assistant Director for the Counterterrorism Division Michael McGarrity told lawmakers on Capitol Hill there are 850 open domestic terrorism investigations, with 40% racially motivated violent extremism.

“The threat of domestic terrorism exists in every region of the United States and affects all walks of life.”

In the Alabama case the group may not have carried out an attack, but the remains of a child believed to belong to Wahhaj, who is being charged with kidnapping were also found on the property.

For other small town cases, Fuhrman says the engaged citizen is often the best defense

“Sometimes if you see something it isn’t suspicious. It’s someone exercising their first amendment rights or living the way they do that you may not agree with but does not pose a criminal or national security threat 5but sometimes they actually are.”

  8. 21 heads of state of various European Union member-states have signed a new manifesto arguing for more integration in the political bloc and a “stronger Europe” — interpreted as a response to the rise of eurosceptic, pro-sovereignty populist parties.
Among the signatories, according to Italian newspaper Il Giornale, are several monarchs such as those of Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark, as well as many presidents, including Italian president Sergio Mattarella.

“European integration has contributed to realising the centuries-old hope of having peace in Europe after unbridled nationalism and other extreme ideologies have brought Europe to the barbarism of two world wars,” the manifesto claims.

“The 2019 elections are particularly important: it is you, the European citizens, who will choose which path the European Union will follow,” the signatories note, adding: “Europe is able to accommodate a very wide range of opinions and ideas. But there must absolutely be no return to a Europe where countries are no longer equal partners, but adversaries.”

  10. Calls for President Trump to be charged with obstruction of justice have reached a fever pitch, and I say “fever” because the basis for such charges doesn’t exist. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is correct: the case of Mueller vs. Trump is closed.

Why then is the Left so desperate to keep the lie rolling? For one thing, they can’t stand the good economic news and the improving popularity of President Donald Trump as it undercuts the chances of Democrats defeating him in the coming election.

Their frenzy is also due, in part, to Democrats trying desperately to avoid what may be a devastating steamroller coming in the form of Attorney General Bill Barr’s pending investigation, along with the report from Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz. And does anyone recall U.S. Attorney John Huber? If the missing pieces of this puzzle materialize. as it appears they will, the results in 2020 will be disastrous for the left and Democrats.

The very interesting news that the FISA court had made four criminal referrals came courtesy of former U.S. Attorney Joe DiGenova, speaking on Fox News on April 24. DiGenova also claimed that several prominent collusion advocates, including James Comey, John Brennan, and James Clapper, could face criminal charges.

This has been coming for a long time but now consider this. If there was illegal spying, favorable treatment for Hillary Clinton, and what amounts to criminal use of the powers of the Justice Department, the FBI, and perhaps even the CIA, what does that make illegal “leaks” designed to conceal and delay such actions being revealed and prosecuted. Why wouldn’t that be obstruction?

‘Monthly reports only cover about 30 of the 100 total counties in NC…’
Border Patrol Agents Arrest Illegal Alien Gang Members and Child Rapists in Texas

(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) North Carolinians for Immigration Reform and Enforcement released its April report on illegal alien child sex offenders and found that authorities charged 26 illegal aliens with 95 crimes, including child rape and sexual assault against a child.

NCFIRE President James Johnson reminded readers that “monthly reports only cover about 30 of the 100 total counties in NC” due to limited resources.

Johnson said cases of illegal aliens sexually assaulting children has risen dramatically in the first four months of 2019 compared with the same time period last year.

In the first four months of 2018 NCFIRE reported 251 charges.

In 2019 that number has risen to 330.

It has been three days since I was placed in solitary, and denied any contact with the outside world. The prospects of escaping this sunken place are grim, but I remain in good spirits, fueled by the belief that in the end good will overcome.

Ok, a touch dramatic, but not really that far from the truth. In the digital age, social media can be the ultimate freedom and/or an oppressive prison, depending on which side of “the law” you land. In this case “the law” requires dogmatic adherence to the talking points pushed by the institutional left.

The most important “public square” that exists today is on the Internet.

In the time of our founding fathers, the public square was a physical location and the freedom to have access to and participate in a public discussion was absolutely vital. The absolute need for this freedom has not changed, but the location has.

The most important “public square” that exists today is on the Internet, specifically on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit. Had this technology existed in his day, James Madison would have included it in the Bill of Rights.

People (read: haters) scoff at the idea that platform access should be a civil right. Why? Because they don’t want you to speak. Their argument is often the proof of concept.

  17. A Harvard University law professor who faced criticism on campus for representing Harvey Weinstein in his sexual assault trial is being relieved of his position as faculty dean of an undergraduate house.

Professor Ronald S. Sullivan Jr. and his wife, Harvard law lecturer Stephanie Robinson, will no longer be faculty deans of Winthrop House — one of 12 undergraduate residential houses at the Boston-area university — after their term ends June 30, Harvard College Dean Rakesh Khurana said.

The couple are the first black faculty deans in Harvard’s history.

Khurana, in a letter explaining his decision not to renew the couple’s deanships, wrote generally about a deteriorating climate in the 400-student house but did not specify the underlying issue.

“Over the last few weeks, students and staff have continued to communicate concerns about the climate in Winthrop House to the college. The concerns expressed have been serious and numerous,” Khurana wrote.

“This decision in no way lessens my gratitude to them for their contributions to the college.”

Sullivan made waves on campus in January when he decided to represent Weinstein, the former movie mogul whose downfall helped launch the #MeToo movement.

  18. Greg Craig, former Obama White House counsel, charged with lying to Justice Department
His attorneys said, “The government’s stubborn insistence on prosecuting Mr. Craig is a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion.”

Former White House counsel Greg Craig was indicted by a grand jury Thursday for allegedly making false statements to the Justice Department about work performed for Ukraine in 2012.

Craig, 74, who was charged with concealing material information from the Foreign Agents Registration Act Unit, or FARA Unit, and making false statements, failed to disclose work he performed for Ukraine because he believed it would prevent him from assuming future roles within the federal government, according to the indictment, which stemmed from special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

Craig, who served as former President Barack Obama’s White House counsel, refused to accept a plea deal.

The Wall Street Journal first reported Wednesday that people familiar with the situation said Craig was likely to be charged with making false statements to the Justice Department.

The Iranian man was given a jail term of two years and seven months. Three other defendants were handed suspended sentences of between six and 11 months from the court, reported German media.

A total of 15 people were injured during the violence which took place on December 29th last year.

The men, who are from Iran and Afghanistan, said they had been under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the attacks. During the incident the men physically assaulted several people in the town, with one hospitalized for head wounds.

The case became a hot political topic in Germany, with calls for asylum seekers who commit crimes to be deported more easily. It also led to far-right groups patrolling the Bavarian town.

As The Local reported at the beginning of January, far-right extremists started patrolling the streets of the town after the violence happened as part of so-called “neighbourhood defence groups”.

Meanwhile, Bavarian politicians condemned the attacks by the young men. Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said that he had been “shaken up” by the news. “This excess of violence is unacceptable,” he added.

Seehofer’s deputy at the Interior Ministry, Stephan Mayer, said that there would be consequences for the country’s refugee policies.

“Any asylum seeker who commits a criminal offence, especially if they commit crimes against life and limb, against property or of a sexual nature, has forfeited their right to hospitality and must leave Germany immediately,” Mayer told Bild newspaper at the time.

“In order to protect the population, perpetrators of violence should also be able to be placed under maximum control — for example through residence obligations, reporting obligations and electronic ankle restraints,” he added.

The resolution also states that your article caused “real harm” to students. How does an article “harm” students?
