Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Germany: Citizenship for Polygamous Migrants?

    by Soeren Kern
    May 10, 2019 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/14191/germany-polygamy-migrants

The German government has withdrawn proposed legislation that would have banned immigrants in polygamous marriages from obtaining German citizenship. The proposed ban had been included in draft changes to Germany’s naturalization law, but was quietly removed from the final text, apparently in the interests of political correctness and multiculturalism.

Although German law clearly prohibits polygamy for German nationals, some have argued that the law is unclear as to whether the law applies to foreign nationals living in Germany. The interior ministers of Germany’s 16 states had unanimously called on the German government to clarify the issue by enshrining into law a blanket ban on German citizenship for polygamous migrants.

Critics say that the bill, as it currently stands, would not only create a legal backdoor for polygamous migrants to become German citizens, but would effectively legalize the practice for Muslim immigrants. The changes would, consequently, enshrine into German law two parallel legal systems, one based on German Civil Law and another based on Islamic Sharia law.

The German government has long been debating proposed changes to the country’s Nationality Act (Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetz, StAG) that would strip German dual-citizens of their German citizenship if they join jihadi groups abroad. The proposed changes would not be retroactive and would not, for instance, apply to German jihadis who joined the Islamic State.

  6. Facebook Allows Terrorist Sympathizers to Thrive: Study (tasnimnews, May 10, 2019)
    https://www.tasnimnews.com/en/news/2019/05/10/2008079/facebook-allows-terrorist-sympathizers-to-thrive-study

“A five-month research by a whistleblower indicated that by failing to remove terrorists’ accounts and auto-creating celebratory videos and pages for terrorist groups, Facebook allows their sympathizers to thrive.

The National Whistleblowers Center in Washington (NWC) has published a 48-page comprehensive study into how Facebook neglects to curb, and even boosts Al-Qaeda affiliated militants’ outreach, arguing that Facebook’s lack of action facilitates the recruitment of terrorists, RT reported.

The study, conducted by an unnamed whistleblower from August through December 2018, showed that out of 3,228 accounts belonging to ‘friends’ of self-identified terrorists, only some 30 percent were removed by the platform.

These “friends” hail from around the world. Those who were singled out for the survey are based in the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Latin America. Among them, “many openly identified as terrorists themselves and shared extremist content,” the executive summary of the report states.

The social media giant, which recently prided itself on taking down 99 percent of Al-Qaeda and Daesh (ISIS or ISIL)-related content before it is reported by users, actually creates such content itself with its auto-generating tools, according to the report.

As an example, it refers to an auto-generated page Facebook “set up” for Al Shabaab militant group, complete with an ISIS logo. Somalia-based Al Shabaab has been long associated with Al-Qaeda. In 2015, a splinter group of its fighters pledged allegiance to ISIL.

The page came about because some users listed their membership in the terror group as their job occupation, prompting Facebook’s AI to create a “local business” page.

Another popular feature embedded in the Facebook algorithm allows for glorification of terrorism and extremism, the report says, referring to “celebration” and “memories” videos. It turns out that the seemingly innocuous feature makes no distinction between a user sharing a video with, say, birthday celebrations, and violence-filled extremist content. One of such chilling “celebration” videos featuring puddles of blood racked up over 2,000 likes, the report notes.

The “frame” feature that allows users to pledge allegiance to a favorite sports team or express support for a country, has been abused by terrorist sympathizes to pledge allegiance to extremist groups – and Facebook is apparently ok with it, since before a frame can be used publicly it must be approved by a Facebook moderator, the study points out.

The whistleblower was able to establish that at least a portion of users who self-identify as terrorists on their account pages, actually are terrorists. Out of 63 profiles of those who liked Al-Qaeda affiliate Tahrir Al Sham’s (former Al-Nusra) auto-generated “business page” on Facebook, 31 were confirmed to be actual terrorists active in Syria’s Idlib province by a local NGO.

The NWC says it has filed a petition with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for it to “sanction Facebook for its dishonesty about terror and hate content on its website.”

Facebook has come under fire for what some believed was a slow and half-hearted response to the recent mosque attack in New Zealand, which saw an attacker livestreaming the massacre of some 50 Muslims. Although the video was taken down, its copies spread through social media.

Responding to the allegations that it aids terrorism supporters, Facebook told AP that it has been investing heavily into stamping out terrorism content and is “detecting and removing terrorism content at a far higher success rate than even two years ago.”

“We don’t claim to find everything and we remain vigilant in our efforts against terrorist groups around the world,” the company said.”

  7. German parliament extends Africa military missions (thedefensepost, May 10, 2019)
    https://thedefensepost.com/2019/05/10/germany-deployment-extended-mali-niger-somalia/

“Germany’s lower house of parliament extended three military missions in Africa until 2020, but lawmakers criticized deployments of special forces in Niger and Cameroon.

The Bundestag on Thursday, May 9 voted overwhelmingly to extend two military missions in Mali and one in Somalia until May 31, 2020, Deutsche Welle reported, approving the decision taken by Germany’s federal cabinet in March.

The extension of Bundeswehr involvement in the European Union Naval Force ATALANTA anti-piracy mission which launched in December 2008 to protect waters off the Horn of Africa and in the Western Indian Ocean is expected to cost €40 million. Around 80 German personnel are deployed, operating the logistical base for naval vessels, and a German P-3C Orion Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft deployed to Base Aerienne 188 in Djibouti.

The bulk of German forces in Africa are in Mali, deployed on two separate international missions.

DW reported around 840 Bundeswehr personnel out of a mandate for 1,100 are deployed to the United Nations peacekeeping mission MINUSMA, but according to U.N. figures for March, 392 troops, 10 police officers and 16 staff officers were deployed.

The third-largest U.N. peacekeeping mission, MINUSMA in March had 12,644 military and 1,734 police personnel, 454 staff officers and 39 experts deployed from more than 50 U.N. partner nations. Its annual budget is more than $1 billion.

The German contingent is based at Camp Castor in Gao and includes reconnaissance forces with ground and airborne capabilities, as well as dedicated force protection personnel, and support and mission staff.

German forces also conduct tactical air transport missions from a new base in Niger’s capital Niamey, officially opened by Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen in November. Around 40 German personnel are deployed in Niger.

A further 190 German personnel work are deployed to the European Union Training Mission in Mali, out of a mandate for 350, making up more than a quarter of the total troops deployed on the mission.

Established in 2013, the 620-strong EUTM Mali has a mandate until May 2020. Troops from 22 member states and five non-E.U. states work with both the Armed Forces of Mali (FAMa) and the G5 Sahel Joint Force. It has trained around 13,000 FAMa personnel.

The EUTM’s Koulikoro Training Center near the southern town of Siby was attacked early on February 24, but the assailants were stopped before they could enter the base.

German troops also advise Mali’s defense ministry and senior military commanders.

The German federal government estimates the extensions will cost €314 million ($352 million) for MINUSMA and €41 million for EUTM Mali.

Controversy over deployments to Niger and Cameroon
The deployment of German special forces units on training missions in Niger and Cameroon drew criticism from some parliamentarians, DW reported.

They argue that overseas deployments require a mandate from the Bundestag, making the presence of German troops in Niger and Cameroon illegal, while the government maintains that training missions are exempt from the requirement for parliamentary approval.

The German special forces deployed to Niger are separate to those deployed as part of MINUSMA.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesperson Steffen Seibert said the special forces only train local troops and are not “actively participating in operations.”

However, the government will provide lawmakers with information on the scope of the Niger and Cameroon missions, the speaker said.”

  8. Kazakhstan repatriates 156 children of ISIS fighters from Syria (thedefensepost, May 10, 2019)
    https://thedefensepost.com/2019/05/10/kazakhstan-repatriates-156-isis-children/

“Kazakhstan said on Friday, May 10 it had evacuated 231 of its citizens, most of them children, from Syria after they traveled or were taken there to join Islamic State.

Thousands from Muslim-majority Kazakhstan, other Central Asian nations and Russia’s Caucasus have traveled to Syria to fight with jihadists since war broke out there in 2011.

The operation to repatriate 156 children and 75 adults took place between May 7 and May 9, Kazakhstan’s presidency said in a statement, without providing details.

The evacuation follows a similar operation in January that saw 43 Kazakhs returned to the country, some of whom were subsequently arrested for extremism-related crimes.

But in the statement on Friday, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev characterized the earlier operation as a success.

“Women abandoned their radical past, got a job, restored ties with relatives. The children went to schools and kindergartens,” he said.

“The influence of destructive false propaganda of terrorists” had persuaded Kazakhs to travel to Syria, he said.

Kazakhstan has hosted a series of talks on Syria brokered by Iran, Russia and Turkey since the beginning of 2017…”

  9. Facebook’s Zuckerberg hails French hate speech plan as EU model (reuters, May 10, 2019)
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-macron-facebook/facebooks-zuckerberg-hails-french-hate-speech-plan-as-eu-model-idUSKCN1SG16G

“Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg hailed France’s efforts to regulate hateful content online as a model for the European Union after meeting President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Friday.

His comments come after the U.S. social media giant was heavily criticized by politicians and the public for its failure to more rapidly remove footage of the March shooting attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, from its network.

Fifty people were killed in the assault, with footage of it circulating online for days.

Zuckerberg’s meeting with Macron coincided with the release of a report commissioned by the French leader recommending increased oversight of Facebook and an independent regulator to police the efforts of large tech companies to deal with hate speech.

“If more countries can follow the lead of what your government has done here, that will likely end up being a more positive outcome for the world in my view than some of the alternatives,” Zuckerberg told reporters at Facebook’s Paris office after the meeting at the Elysee palace.

“We need new rules for the internet that will spell out the responsibilities of companies and those of governments,” he told France 2 television in an interview. “That is why we want to work with the team of President Macron. We need a public process.”

The French president wants France to take a leading role on tech regulation, seeking to strike a balance between what he perceives as the United States’ laissez-faire stance and China’s iron grip on the internet.

The 33-page report, co-written by a former lobbyist for Google France, recommends that French authorities should have more access to Facebook’s algorithms and greater scope to audit the company’s internal policies against hate speech.

The report comes after Facebook allowed a team of French regulators to spend six months inside the company monitoring its policies. It represents a “half-time” assessment for their stint which started in January.

“The inadequacy and lack of credibility in the self-regulatory approach adopted by the largest platforms justify public intervention to make them more responsible,” the report said.

Companies like Facebook cannot simply declare themselves to be transparent, it added, noting that checking the integrity of the algorithms they use was a particularly complex task.

    ‘DOMINATING POSITION’
However, the convergence between French regulators and big tech companies was criticized by some internet lobby groups.

“Up to now, in terms of regulation, only the internet giants have been invited to the table, while others wait for decisions to be taken to have more visibility,” Constance Bommelaer de Leusse of non-profit group Internet Society said.

“This only reinforces the dominating position of Web giants,” she said.

This week, Chris Hughes, one of the founders of Facebook with Zuckerberg while they were at Harvard, wrote in a long opinion piece in the New York Times that he believed the company was too powerful and needed to be broken up.

Zuckerberg declined to comment on Hughes’ piece when asked by reporters in Paris, but Nick Clegg, his global communication head and a former British deputy prime minister, dismissed it as “melodramatic”.

“For us, the alternative to these melodramatic calls for breaking up companies is exactly what we’re discussing here, which is proper regulation. What the tech sector needs is not to be broken up, it is proper rules,” Clegg said.

France’s parliament, where Macron’s ruling party has a comfortable majority, is debating legislation that would give the new regulator the power to fine tech companies up to 4% of their global revenue if they don’t do enough to remove hateful content from their network.

Facebook’s decision to allow the team of French regulators inside the company was the first time the company had opened its doors in such a way.

Facebook’s shares fell as much as 5% in a single day following the Christchurch shooting, but have since risen by about 10%, helped by good first-quarter results.”

  10. Egypt police kill ‘extremely dangerous’ terrorist on Cairo-Suez road (ahram, May 10, 2019)
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/331382/Egypt/Politics-/Egypt-police-kill-extremely-dangerous-terrorist-on.aspx

“Egypt’s interior ministry has killed an “extremely dangerous” terrorist in an exchange of fire on a Cairo-Suez highway, it said on Friday.

“In continuation of the intensive campaigns launched by the security services under the leadership of the Public Security Sector with the participation of the General Directorate for Drug Control and the Criminal Investigation Departments in the security of East Ismailia and Qalioubia, the Department of Security Forces and the Central Security Sector received information on a very dangerous element that had transferred their activity to the desert Cairo-Suez road, escaping intensive security strikes in the ??Magic and Beauty area,” read a Friday ministry statement.

According to the statement, when the terrorist element saw forces approaching, “he fired shots at them; as a result, he was killed.”

A quantity of heroin was found with the deceased as well as night vision goggles, a mobile phone and EGP 34,000.

The public prosecution investigated the incident, the statement read.

The efforts of successive security campaigns in a geographic area the statement named as “Magic and Beauty” have resulted in the arrest of 199 criminal elements, 66 of whom possessed large quantities of narcotics and firearms, and the death of seven people who exchanged fire with troops.”

  11. Drone strikes prove counterproductive, SC rules (tribune, May 10, 2019)
    https://tribune.com.pk/story/1969266/1-petition-asking-halt-us-drone-strikes-pakistan-dismissed-sc/

“Pakistan has conveyed to the United States (US) that drone strikes help provide recruits to terrorists.

“It has been conveyed to the US in clear terms that violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty is unacceptable. We have also impressed upon the US that drone strikes also give rise to anti-US sentiment in the region and help provide recruits to the terrorists,” says a statement submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Deputy Attorney General Sohail Mahmood in the Supreme Court in a contempt case over the government’s failure to halt drone strikes in Pakistani territory.

The statement says that Pakistan’s policy on drone strikes is clear, consistent and unequivocal.

“We have maintained that unilateral use of drone strikes by the USA on our territory is a blatant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity besides being illegal and counterproductive. They are also against law and violation of basic human rights,” says the statement.

It is stated that Pakistan raised this issue bilaterally as well as at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, UN Security Council and the UN Human Rights Council.

The statement further states that both at bilateral and multilateral levels, Pakistan’s concerns on the issue were noted by the international community. Even, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism visited Pakistan from March 11-13, 2013 and noted in his report to the UN General Assembly that the continued use of remotely piloted aircraft amounted to violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.

About the issue of compensation to the victims of drone attacks, the foreign ministry said that this matter can only be adjudicated by the International Criminal Court.

It is also said that there is no collective understanding and agreement among the international community on the issue of drones, adding that in the absence of legal consensus on the issue of drones, Pakistan’s efforts are geared toward generating debate at international level with a view to building consensus on the issue of drones.

Likewise, the foreign ministry says that matters related to defence and foreign affairs are not justiciable.

Meanwhile, the three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, on Thursday dismissed a plea for stopping drone attacks.

In May 2013, the Peshawar High Court had passed directions to the federal government for taking steps to stop drones. However, in December 2014, the PHC division bench dismissed contempt plea in the same matter. Later, the petition had been filed in the SC by Raja Saad Sultan challenging the decision of the division bench of PHC.

During the hearing on Thursday, the bench noted that it was not the job of the judiciary to stop drones, adding that such policy matters were prerogative of the executive.

The court noted that the ministries of interior and foreign affairs could take up the matter with the US.”

  12. Ramadan in Xinjiang Province a ‘Sign of Extremism’, Says China (moroccoworldnews, May 10, 2019)
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2019/05/272716/ramadan-xinjiang-sign-extremism-china/

“Amnesty International has launched a petition to help Muslims in China’s western Xinjiang province observe Ramadan.

The Amnesty petition page reminds readers of China’s repression of the predominantly Muslims ethnic minority, Uyghurs, in the province.

For Chinese authorities in Xinjiang, some displays of religious affiliation are considered as “signs of extremism.” These include fasting, growing an “abnormal beard,” wearing a headscarf, praying regularly, and avoiding alcohol.

According to Amnesty, any of these can lead to imprisonment in camps called “transformation-through-education centres.” These camps aim to replace religious beliefs and aspects of cultural identity with political loyalty for the government.

The government discourages Muslim religious and cultural practices.

According to Amnesty, Chinese authorities have regularly posted notices on government websites that primary and high school students are not allowed to observe Ramadan.

In April 2017, the government reportedly published a list of prohibited names, most of which were Islamic in origin, and required all children under 16 with these names to change them.

Last year, Radio Free Asia reported that during Ramadan, the authorities forced restaurants to stay open and restricted access to mosques, Amnesty added.

    Petition for protecting religious freedom

Amnesty is petitioning for the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to urge Chinese authorities to respect Uyghurs’ freedom of religion and to stop persecuting them.

The OIC is an international organisation of 57 Muslim-majority countries. Its IPHRC aims to protect and promote human rights in the Muslim World.

At a meeting in Abu Dhabi in March, the OIC turned a blind eye to the situation of Uyghurs, stating that it “commends the efforts of the People’s Republic of China in providing care to its Muslim citizens.”

Xinjiang province borders Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan. the region is home to a predominantly Muslim Uyghur ethnic group.

    Ethnic tensions

The province is also a political hotspot. It has the highest concentration of fossil fuels in China and is therefore extremely valuable to the Chinese government. The region’s economic opportunities have attracted Han Chinese people from the rest of the country. Supported by the government, Han Chinese are allegedly given better jobs, causing ethnic tension.

Uyghurs are culturally and ethnically closer to Central Asian countries and some seek independence.

The anti-Han independence movement intensified in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of independent Muslim states in Central Asia. But the Chinese government suppressed the movement.

Sporadic ethnic violence has since occasionally flared up. In 2009, 200 people were killed in ethnic rioting. 2014 was particularly violent, with a number of bomb incidents, shootings, and knife attacks between ethnic groups and Chinese authorities.”

  13. Visa liberalization is Turkey’s top priority: EU Reform Action Group (hurriyetdailynews, May 10, 2019)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/visa-liberalization-is-turkeys-top-priority-eu-reform-action-group-143322

“Turkey’s top priority in its agenda with the European Union is visa liberalization, which will allow Turkish citizens visa-free travel in the Schengen area, said a joint declaration of the sixth meeting of the Reform Action Group.

“In this framework, it has been agreed to accelerate the process of fulfilling remaining benchmarks in this meeting. We have clarified the steps to be taken in the forthcoming period to finalize the Visa Liberalization Dialogue, which will benefit our citizens in many areas, including economy,” said the declaration.

The Reform Action Group convened for the first time under the leadership of Erdo?an on Europe Day, May 9, to discuss the government’s political, economic and legal reforms for the stalled EU accession process.

Within the scope of the Visa Liberalization Dialogue, the second meeting of negotiations for the conclusion of the agreement between the EU and Turkey on the Exchange of Personal Data between Europol and the Turkish Competent Authorities for Fighting Serious Crime and Terrorism was held on April 9, added the action group.

The statement also noted that the government will soon announce the Judicial Reform Strategy, which has been finalized by the Ministry of Justice.

“The contributions of all stakeholders, including those of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, have been benefited in the updating process, which was carried out with a participatory approach,” said the declaration. The group pledged to implement many reforms in line with the Judicial Reform Strategy saying those will be road map in the area of the judiciary.

Regarding fundamental rights and freedoms, the government will announce the Action Plan on Human Rights, which is being prepared in an “inclusive manner,” read the statement.

As the first step of the Judicial Reform Strategy, the Turkish Justice Academy was established on May 2 as a result of efforts towards restructuring the Academy, which aims to enhance the quality of human resources in the area of the judiciary through trainings, said the reform action group.

Recalling that the Code of Judicial Ethics for judges and prosecutors was announced on March 14, the declaration said a significant step has been taken towards ensuring the independence and impartiality of the judiciary with these guiding ethical principles designated for Turkish judges and prosecutors.

“With this step, we have realized another one of the Council of Europe GRECO Recommendations,” it added.

“Steps will be taken to strengthen the institutional structure of the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey,” read the declaration.

Referring to the upcoming European Parliament elections, the declaration said: “We hope that the increasing ideological excesses will not dominate the new European Parliament and that the new formation in the EU institutions will have a more balanced and objective stance.””

    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/17-000-refugees-entered-europe-in-2019-un/1475415

“About 17,000 irregular migrants and refugees reached Europe by sea since the beginning of 2019, the UN migration agency said Friday.

Of that figure, 493 perished at sea, according a report published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

During the same period last year, 24,492 refugees and migrants entered Europe and 620 drowned in the Mediterranean Sea.

Arrivals to Greece were higher than other Mediterranean countries. Between Jan. 1 and May 8 more than 7,800 irregular migrants entered through Greece.

Spain was closely behind with 7,202 arrivals. Arrivals to Spain increased compared to last year’s figures of 5,219 arrivals.

“[The] IOM office notes that more than half of 2019’s arrivals landed in the year’s first 31 days, and more than two thirds within the year’s first 60 days,” said IOM Spain.

Seventy migrants were killed and 16 rescued after a boat sank off the Tunisian coast Friday, the Tunisian Press Agency reported.

A total of 30,510 migrants died between 2014 and 2018 while making the treacherous journey to Europe, the UN agency reported in January.”

    https://www.thelocal.de/20190510/asylum-seeker-jailed-for-random-new-years-eve-attacks-in-amberg

“An 18-year-old asylum seeker who carried out random attacks on people in the Bavarian town of Amberg in the lead up to New Year’s Eve 2018 has been handed a jail sentence.

The Iranian man was given a jail term of two years and seven months. Three other defendants were handed suspended sentences of between six and 11 months from the court, reported German media.

A total of 15 people were injured during the violence which took place on December 29th last year.

The men, who are from Iran and Afghanistan, said they had been under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the attacks. During the incident the men physically assaulted several people in the town, with one hospitalized for head wounds.

The case became a hot political topic in Germany, with calls for asylum seekers who commit crimes to be deported more easily. It also led to far-right groups patrolling the Bavarian town.

As The Local reported at the beginning of January, far-right extremists started patrolling the streets of the town after the violence happened as part of so-called “neighbourhood defence groups”….”

  19. FOX News – Tlaib reiterates call for Trump’s impeachment, slams reluctant Dems for acting based on ‘political strategy’

Rep. Rashida Tlaib said Thursday the people want to see President Trump impeached and urged her colleagues to take such course of action.

The Michigan Democrat appeared on CNN to discuss the latest impeachment talk after MoveOn.org, a liberal activist group, delivered a flash drive with 10 million signatures calling for Trump’s impeachment.

“What I think is important is to recognize that 10 million people said that we need to hold this president accountable,” Tlaib said about the signatures. “That speaks volumes.”

Tlaib noted that the number of signatures gives a mandate for the Congress to go after the president and investigate him.

“Just alone, just think about it: ten million people want us to uphold the United States Constitution. Ten million people want us to investigate this president and whether or not he has violated the United States Constitution and whether or not he’s acting above the law. And I think that is tremendous, you know, a movement that is moving.”

As a swipe at her Democratic colleagues who are wary of going all-out to impeach Trump, Tlaib said that the petition is “saying to all of us as members of Congress, please, please do something. Take back our democracy. Get back our country.”

She also threw shade on House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., who declared a “constitutional crisis” after voting to hold Attorney General Bill Bar in contempt, though balking at the impeachment option.

Tlaib suggested Nadler is acting based on “political strategy” while she wants to impeach Trump because that is – in her view – the right thing to do.

“When I look back at this moment in our country, this remarkable moment in our country, I want to look back and say that I did something,” she said. “Right now, doing nothing is not an option, and ten million people just told us, do something.”
