2. Saatchi Gallery covers up SKU artworks after complaints by Muslims

A top art gallery was forced to cover two paintings last week after complaints from Muslims that they were “blasphemous”. One expert described them as “The Satanic Verses all over again”.

 

Exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery by an artist known as SKU, the works overlaid Arabic script on nude images, and were meant to represent the conflict between America and Islamic extremists.

 

However, the inclusion of the Islamic declaration of faith, known as the shahada, in the painting prompted complaints from Muslim visitors, who asked for them to be removed from the west London gallery’s exhibition, Rainbow Scenes, which finished on Friday.

(I do not know at this moment if the “Piss Christ” was ever shown at this gallery. But I do recall that a large number of complaints were made to every gallery that did exhibit it, and also to the best of my knowledge, not one gallery ever, stopped the showing due to complaints.)

It is estimated that about one-third of the globe’s population suffers from religious persecution. By the numbers, Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world.

 

An Italian study calculates that in 2016, a Christian was killed for his or her faith every six minutes. The trend is accelerating. A 2016 Pew Research report found that Christians were targeted in 144 countries, up from 125 in 2015. The Christian persecution NGO Open Doors revealed in its 2019 Watch List Report that within five years the number of countries classified as demonstrating “extreme” persecution went from one (North Korea) to 11. According to the Center for Studies on New Religions (CESNUR), 70 per cent of them were victims of tribal conflict in Africa alone.

 

The CESNUR study’s findings have been fleshed out in far greater depth by the Interim Report of an Independent Review into the global persecution of Christians by the Bishop of Truro, the Rt. Rev. Philip Mounstephen, conducted at the behest of Jeremy Hunt, Britain’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, and delivered at the end of April. A final report will be delivered in June, but the scope and nature of the problem is amply distilled herein.

6. U.N. to Malta: drop terrorism charges against African migrants accused of hijacking tanker

GENEVA (Reuters) – The United Nations human rights office called on Malta on Tuesday to drop terrorism charges against three African teenage migrants arrested for hijacking a small commercial tanker that rescued their vessel off the coast of Libya.

 

The three, who have pleaded not guilty, were among 108 Africans rescued by the El Hiblu 1 tanker in late March. They are accused of threatening the crew to try to force the boat to go to Malta and not take them back to Libya.

 

Many of the migrants, including several children, had been dehydrated and exhibiting “clear signs of torture”, U.N. human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said.

 

The three youths – one from Ivory Coast and two from Guinea – are due to appear in court on May 20, she said.

 

“The accused, aged 15, 16 and 19, have been charged under Maltese laws for allegedly hijacking the ship and forcing it to go to Malta. Some of the charges are punishable by life imprisonment,” Shamdasani told a news briefing.

(They hijacked the ship of their own rescuers. They should be charged with an offence that would lead to grave consequences. This kind of behaviour cannot be dismissed because of what harm they did to each other before hand. Otherwise we can abandon our justice system altogether as the notion of personal agency is dissolved)

7. Migrants: Mare Jonio leaves Lampedusa for SAR zone

ROME – The Mare Jonio ship operated by NGO Mediterranea Saving Human has left the port of Lampedusa for the area in front of Libya despite a warning from the coast guard against ”carrying out rescue operations in a stable and organized way” because not adequately equipped.

”As of tonight, we will patrol the SAR (search and rescue area) zone 30 miles off Libya’s coast north of Zhuara for a sea of rights and not death”, the NGO tweeted. (ANSAmed)

Apparently, the city of Toronto cancelled the “Al Quds Day” march, a march of massive antisemitism funded and organized by Iran and its proxies for later this month. But it will manifest anyway as a BDS march on a Saturday later this month. On the following Monday, there will be a March for Israel in Toronto but the BDS/Al-Quds people promised to go interfere with it in whatever ways they can. So it promised to be a lively weekend.
