Curious parade in Belgium

Here are a few links. I will leave it to to the reader to decide what the intention is. But to the best of my knowledge, previous ‘parades’ in Belgium has shown Jews in ovens, and similar iconography, yet never ever mocked Islam in any way, shape or form.

  1. It’s weird, don’t know what to make of it.
Carnaval in that part of the world is supposed to be transgressive, it’s about poking fun at the established order. So it’s no surprise one of their floats may be in bad taste.
And as one of the articles mentions, there was outrage in 2013 about an Aalst float, which featured SS uniforms and a Nazi railroad wagon. That float was actually lampooning a nationalist political party.
But in this case, the whole story about “sabbatical year” and things getting expensive sounds very suspect. And sadly, in my experience, flemish people can be quite ignorant and crass.

  2. LOL
Next year, they will invite Virginia Governor to re-play Blackface. Jesse the unemployed actor can brings props! Ha Ha. No such thing as being reserved from lampoonig. They can also have someone with a keffiyah trying to pronounce Palestinian without using a B. HA HA all in good fun, right?

    • From JTA article
The Aalst parade this year also featured a group called Forza Witkap, whose members came dressed in the white gowns and pointy hoods of the Ku Klux Klan. Led by the far-right politician Guy D’haeseleer, its float, designed to resemble a brewery, had a poster reading “Superior White Beer.” A participant, colorfully clothed and wearing blackface, handed out chocolate mousse to cheering spectators.

      • I looked up Mr D’haeseleer, “Forza Witkap” I guess refers to Forza Ninove, the local party he was leading. The chocolate mousse refers to a racist Facebookpost from 2017. It resurfaced during elections last year.
