Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

  1. The Proud Queen of Identity Politics
Kamala Harris says it’s vital that we hate the proper villains.
    February 27, 2019
    John Perazzo

During the MSNBC program AM Joy this past Sunday, host Joy Reid asked Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris if, during her campaign, it would “be difficult … to advocate race-based policy” without becoming vulnerable to the charge that she was engaging in identity politics. In her response, Harris said:

“I want to talk about the issue of identity politics, Joy. This term identity politics, people will use that term — it’s like people used to talk about the race card. They bring this term up when you talk about issues that are about race, about sexual orientation, about religion. They’ll bring it up when we are talking about civil rights issues as a way to marginalize the issue, as a way to frankly try to silence you or shut you up. We need to call it what it is, which is to try and divert away from a conversation that needs to happen in America. Why? One, because we must speak truth. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-Semitism are all real in this country, so we need to have that conversation and address it. Two, and this is equally important, how America deals with the issues and the disparities, and also the hate that can be — that causes these issues to become lethal in proportion — how America deals with these issues is a matter of American identity. This is not about identity politics, and if it is, it’s about the identity of the United States of America. How we handle the issues will be about our collective identity.”

The cable news networks will also carry the hearing live in which Cohen will reportedly say of President Trump, “He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat.”

  3. Iran: US women-led pacifist group calls for peace in Tehran

Members of the anti-war group Code Pink criticised the US for leaving the Iran nuclear deal and expressed their worry “about the US going to war with Iran,” during a press conference in Tehran’s Milad Tower on Wednesday.

“We are worried about the US bombing Iran.

We are worried about another disastrous war in the Middle East and we don’t want to be party to that,” said Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin.

“It is almost 20 years now that the US has invaded and occupied countries in the Middle East.

It’s been such a disaster for the people of this region. we don’t want to see it get even worse.”

Code Pink member Ann Wright criticised the US for “abrogading the framework agreement treaty with Iran.

Since November 2002 the Code Pink group, which reportedly includes lawyers, journalists, artists and activists, travels across the globe and meets government officials, civic institution representatives and everyday citizens to promote the idea of ending US-led wars, according to their website.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to twitter to accuse a journalist of stalking her. Only problem, the person she accused of stalking her was 100% NOT stalking her. In fact he was publicly mocking someone who appeared to be.

  5. Oregon to become first state to impose rent control

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon will become the first state in the nation to impose statewide mandatory rent control after lawmakers passed a measure that will establish protections for people in the increasingly competitive housing market.

The House approved the landmark bill 35-25 on Tuesday, over objections from Republicans who argued rent control will discourage investment and do little to address the state’s affordable housing crisis.

The measure, which previously passed the Senate, will now head to Gov. Kate Brown, who has said she will sign it. The bill will take effect immediately, as Democrats say the housing crisis constitutes an emergency.

  6. Lake Erie first lake to be granted same rights as a human

Feb. 27 (UPI) — Voters in Toledo, Ohio, have become the first in the nation to grant a lake the same rights as a human being.

The Lake Erie Bill of Rights passed a special election vote Tuesday, giving the fourth largest of the Great Lakes “the right to exist, flourish and naturally evolve.”

The new law gives citizens of Toledo the right to sue any other person, farm or corporation violating the lake’s rights — such as a company, farm or government municipality that is polluting the lake.

  8. IED hidden in corpse kills 17 in central Mali (thedefensepost, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://thedefensepost.com/2019/02/27/mali-booby-trapped-corpse-ied-diankabou/

“Seventeen people were killed in a blast caused by a booby-trapped corpse in central Mali, security sources and a local official said on Wednesday, February 27.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Diankabou, a small town in the Mopti region, with a local official telling AFP it was caused by “an explosive device which was planted on the body of a man who had been shot dead.”

A security source confirmed the information, saying: “The body exploded, killing 17 people.”

Among the victims were the parents of the man whose body had been booby-trapped, he said.

The man had gone to find food for his cattle and had never returned. His parents then found the corpse.

“They rather unwisely approached the body which exploded, killing 17 people. The gunmen who killed him had planted explosives on his body and around it,” the source said.

“This is a method that jihadists use to cause maximum deaths,” another security source said…”

  9. Daesh Leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi under US Protection: Iraqi MP (tasnimnews, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.tasnimnews.com/en/news/2019/02/27/1957288/daesh-leader-abu-bakr-al-baghdadi-under-us-protection-iraqi-mp

“Baghdadi has chosen the province’s western desert areas as a safe haven for himself, Hassan Salem said, according to the Arabic-language El-Nashra news website.

The US military’s Ayn al-Asad Airbase provides all means to support al-Baghdadi’s movements between Iraq and Syria, he stated.

The Iraqi parliamentarian went on to say that the Daesh leader is under full protection of American troops in Anbar.

Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for the fight against the militants, blunted the edge of Daesh offensive and later forced them to withdraw from the territories they had occupied.

In November 2017, the self-proclaimed caliphate of Daesh collapsed after Syrian and Iraqi armed forces and their allies managed to recapture the terror group’s last strongholds in the two Arab countries.”

  10. Tunisia Finds Bomb-Making Material in Extremist Hideout (aawsat, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1610561/tunisia-finds-bomb-making-material-extremist-hideout

“Tunisian counter-terrorism units have recently detonated three landmines set to target security and military convoys pursuing extremists in the western mountainous region.

Tunisian military sources noted that the units have discovered a camp used by terrorists as a hideout in Arbata mountain in the southwestern province of Gafsa, where they found bomb-making material.

The mountainous area has been the scene of armed confrontations between Tunisian armed forces and a terrorist group led by Mourad Gharsalli

The clashes ended on July 10, 2015 when Gharsalli and other terrorists were killed.

Tunisia’s Interior Ministry has confirmed that the extremist network found at the camp included six members, but said that there could be a total of 20 terrorists in the mountainous region.

Security officials, who took part in the latest raid on Arbata, affirmed that top terrorists such as Hatem Basdouri and Usama al-Ghazri, were among extremists entrenched in the mountains.

Both have separately joined Uqba Ibn Nafi Battalion – affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb – before joining Jund al-Khalifa, which has pledged allegiance to ISIS.”

  11. Exclusive – Yemen FM Calls for Increasing Pressure on Iran, Warns Europe from its Missiles (aawsat, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1610411/exclusive-yemen-fm-calls-increasing-pressure-iran-warns-europe-its-missiles

“Yemeni Foreign Minister Khaled al-Yamani called on European countries to exert pressure on Iran in order to stop its support for the Houthi militias.

He explained that Iran provides the group with all the tools to continue its war in Yemen, drain its strength in a battle that will not benefit any party, and pose a threat to security and peace in the vital Gulf of Aden and Red Sea areas.

In exclusive remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat on the sidelines of his participation in Arab-EU summit that was held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Yamani stressed that all that is required is putting an end to Iran’s intervention in his country and its support for terrorism in the region.

Commenting on the summit, he said: “Europe and Arabs have many things in common, mainly confronting challenges, especially in the fight against terrorism, illegal migration and refugees, in addition to contributing in solving the current regional complexities.”

He explained that western countries were the reason behind the eruption of the so-called Arab Spring and the tragedies facing the region today, calling for “taking stances against Iran, which is fueling all the conflicts and wars through its meddling in Arab affairs, especially Yemen.”

“We want to look for the common denominator between us and Europeans,” Yamani added.

“There is an urgent need to agree on this commonality, as demonstrated in the meeting that took place with Europe in Warsaw at the invitation of the Polish and US governments, to confirm that we are seeking this partnership with our European friends because the Iranian policy does not only target the Arab region, but also Europe.”

Yamani pointed out that many Iran-affiliated terror cells have been discovered in Europe, including France and Belgium.

“We must work with friends to rein in Iran, but unfortunately Europe refused to include the Iranian interference in the final communique” of the Sharm el-Sheikh summit.

Asked whether the rejection was due to their concerns about Iran’s nuclear program, the minister replied that his country understands this position, but he warned Europe that “Iran has developed its nuclear weapon and its ballistic missiles have a range of 2,500 kilometers.”

“What will happen when Iran develops rockets that can reach European capitals? Will they also wait?” he wondered.

Yamani revealed that Europe has finally started to put pressure on Iran by addressing its ballistic missiles file, while also noting a European Union statement on Tehran’s expansionist agenda.”

  12. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE Suspend Flights to Pakistan (aawsat, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1610876/saudi-arabia-bahrain-uae-suspend-flights-pakistan

“Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates suspended on Wednesday flights to Pakistan after the South Asian nation closed its air space following heightened tensions with neighboring India.

Saudi Arabian Airlines said that it suspended flights until Pakistan reopens its airspace.

Bahrain’s Gulf Air said it had suspended all flights to and from Pakistan due to closure of airspace while low-cost carrier flydubai said it is reviewing its schedule.

Emirates and Etihad also said they had suspended some flights to Pakistan.

Airlines flying over India and Pakistan to Europe, the Middle East and Asia were disrupted and some flights were routed through Mumbai on India’s western coast, so they could head further south and avoid Pakistan air space, an Indian government official told Reuters.

India, earlier on Wednesday, shut several airports in the northern part of the country temporarily, leading to dozens of domestic flight cancellations after Pakistani warplanes crossed a disputed border into the Indian side of Kashmir.

Operations at the Indian airports have now resumed.

Pakistan carried out air strikes and shot down two Indian military jets on Wednesday, Pakistani officials said, a day after Indian warplanes struck inside Pakistan for the first time since a war in 1971, prompting leading powers to urge both of the nuclear-armed countries to show restraint.”

  13. Saudis asked to fill vacuum left by expats in anti-tasattur impact (saudigazette, Feb 27, 2019)
    http://saudigazette.com.sa/article/560099/SAUDI-ARABIA/Saudis-asked-to-fill-vacuum-left-by-expats-in-anti-tasattur-impact

“The National Trade Committee at the Council of the Saudi Chambers has asked young Saudi men and women to avail themselves of the opportunities left behind by expatriates leaving the market under the impact of the law to combat tasattur, or cover-up operations where they do business in the names of Saudis.

Members of the committee asked the municipalities to join the efforts in fighting tasattur as they supervise a number of trading activities, the Makkah newspaper reported.

The members said jobs in the private sector must be attractive to lure more young Saudi men and women.

A number of economic and marketing experts said using the electronic system of payment instead of cash will cut the path for tasattur and will also greatly reduce the volume of remittances abroad by expatriates.

A royal consent was recently given to the recommendations of the National Program to Combat Tassatur, which is meant to fight all forms of cover-up operations, encourage e-trade, organize financial transactions to limit the flight of capital abroad and promote the private sector to generate more jobs for the Saudi nationals.

The program was also aimed at preventing expatriates from illegally acquiring businesses in the Kingdom.

Under the royal consent, the recommendations of the program must be implemented within 90 days of their issuance…”

  14. Law to protect whistleblowers finalized: Nazaha (saudigazette, Feb 27, 2019)
    http://saudigazette.com.sa/article/560109/SAUDI-ARABIA/Law-to-protect-whistleblowers-finalized-Nazaha

“The National Anti-Corruption Commission (Nazaha) will soon bring a law to guarantee the protection of whistleblowers and witnesses in graft cases.

Abdulrahman Al-Ajlan, spokesperson of Nazaha, said law has drafted and the announcement about its issuance is expected in the near future.

Speaking to Okaz/Saudi Gazette, he said the commission has made intervention to protect some whistleblowers after they were subject to harassment.

“Nazaha will guarantee their protection in addition to providing them remuneration in accordance with the significance of reporting,” he said.

Al-Ajlan said Nazaha is now verifying the merit of 1,447 complaints that were reported to it during 2018.

The commission will hand over these complaints to relevant investigation authorities after the completion of the verification.

He emphasized that all the actions taken by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman to fight corruption and the royal directives confirm that there is no immunity for anyone in the fight against corruption…”

  15. Belgium not obliged to repatriate Islamic State supporters and their children, court rules (mee, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/belgium-not-obliged-repatriate-islamic-state-supporters-and-their-children-court-rules

“An appeals court in Belgium has overturned a ruling that would have forced the country to repatriate citizens who joined the Islamic State (IS) group, as well as their children, in the latest example of the global debate over how to deal with foreign IS members.

The Brussels Court of Appeal said in its ruling on Wednesday that the Belgian state was not forced “to undertake any act of repatriation”.

The case centres around two Belgian women who joined IS in Syria and their six children.

A Belgian judge ruled last year that the government had to bring back Tatiana Wielandt, 26, Bouchra Abouallal, 25, and their children. At the time, they were being held at al-Hol camp in a Kurdish-majority area of Syria.

Wielandt and Abouallal were convicted in absentia in Belgium for being members of the militant group.

The case highlights how Belgium and other countries, including Britain, France and the United States, are struggling to put policies in place to deal with citizens who are asking to come home after having joined IS in Syria or Iraq.

The issue has become more pressing in recent weeks after the US announced plans to pull its troops out of Syria.

Earlier this month, the British government revoked the citizenship of Shamima Begum, who left the country at the age of 15 to join IS in Syria…”

  16. Airbus to remove German parts from warplanes amid Saudi export freeze: Report (mee, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/airbus-remove-german-parts-warplanes-amid-saudi-export-freeze-report

“Airbus will remove German-built equipment from its C925 military transport plane after the country decided to prohibit arms exports to Saudi Arabia, sources within the aircraft company told Reuters.

“We are now designing [the German content] out of the plane,” said one source familiar with Airbus’s plans, the news agency reported on Wednesday.

Navigational lamps used for landing the planes are built in Germany, with the total German content standing at about four percent, the source said.

A second company source told Reuters that a review was underway to see if German-sourced parts could be replaced on other Airbus aircraft…”

  17. Green Left becomes first major Dutch party to back Israel boycott (memo, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190227-green-left-becomes-first-major-dutch-party-to-back-israel-boycott/

“The Dutch Green Left Party has become the first mainstream political movement in the Netherlands to endorse a boycott of Israel.

The party backed the Palestinian-led, Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement during its General Congress meeting on 16 February.

“BDS is a legitimate means to help Palestinians in their fight for justice,” the motion in question states. The motion also states that the Green Left “will be alert and resist forcefully attempts in any country to criminalise BDS”.

The Green Left has 14 out of 150 seats in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the Dutch parliament.

In response to the news, the Dutch Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel, a pro-Israel advocacy group, condemned the Green Left, and claimed that BDS “is linked to terrorist groups”.”

  18. US denies over 37,000 visas due to travel ban (memo, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190227-us-denies-over-37000-visas-due-to-travel-ban/

“The US State Department denied more than 37,000 visa applications in 2018 due to President Donald Trump’s travel ban, according to data released yesterday.

The number of denials was up sharply from less than 1,000 cases the previous year due to the president’s executive order.

Nearly four million applications are denied every year for a number of reasons, including having a communicable disease or mental disability or being involved in money laundering.

But the latest report highlights the new impact the ban has placed on those who just a few years ago were eligible for a US visa.

Trump’s executive order, largely seen as a “Muslim ban”, was imposed soon after he was inaugurated into office and placed travel restrictions on anyone attempting to enter the US from the majority-Muslim countries of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, along with North Korea and Venezuela.

After being initially introduced, the travel ban was heavily criticised and faced multiple legal battles, forcing the Trump administration to revise it.

After a third iteration of the executive order, it was finally upheld by the Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote.

The figures released by the State Department show that because of the executive order, the government denied 15,384 applications for immigrant visas, which are given to those who want to live permanently in the United States.

The government also denied 21,645 applications for non-immigrant visas, which are given to individuals who are coming for short-term visits, including for business or a vacation.”

  19. ‘Indifference to human rights fuelling repression across the Middle East’ (memo, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190227-indifference-to-human-rights-fuelling-repression-across-the-middle-east/

“Global indifference to human rights violations in the Middle East is fuelling atrocities and repression, warns Amnesty International in its latest review of human rights in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. “The international community’s chilling complacency towards wide-scale human rights violations in the MENA has emboldened governments to commit appalling violations during 2018 by giving them the sense that they need never fear facing justice,” Amnesty points out.

The report describes how authorities across the region have “unashamedly persisted with ruthless campaigns of repression in order to crush dissent, cracking down on protesters, civil society and political opponents, often with tacit support from powerful allies”. Narratives of national security and counterterrorism have often been used as justification by governments seeking to change the balance between state powers and individual freedoms, to the detriment of the latter.

The Amnesty report notes that the shocking murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October led to a rare pause as states such as Germany, Denmark and Finland moved to suspend their supply of arms to Saudi Arabia. However, a handful of countries were unmoved and for key allies of the Saudis, such as Britain, the US and France, it has been business as usual. The human rights group is critical of the international community’s failure to meet the demands by Amnesty and other rights groups for an independent UN investigation capable of delivering justice with regard to the brutal murder of the Washington Post journalist…”

  20. Yemen family marries off 3-year-old girl for food (memo, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190227-yemen-family-marries-off-3-year-old-girl-for-food/

“A family in Yemen has married off their three-year-old daughter in exchange for food and shelter, international charity Oxfam warned yesterday.

“Conflict, rising food prices and plummeting incomes in Yemen are forcing people to resort to desperate measures to stave off hunger,” Oxfam said in a press release.

“Since the escalation in conflict in 2015, food prices in Yemen have soared while household incomes have plummeted, pushing the costs of basic foods beyond the reach of many,” the statement said.

The warning comes as rich countries meet in the Swiss city of Geneva to pledge aid for the humanitarian crisis in Yemen which has left almost ten million people one step away from famine…”

  21. Egypt rebukes Turkey in spat with EU after executions (memo, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190227-egypt-rebukes-turkey-in-spat-with-eu-after-executions/

“Egypt rebuked Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday after he criticised European leaders for attending a summit hosted by Cairo days after nine men were executed, says Reuters.

Erdogan and his foreign minister accused European Union leaders of hypocrisy for telling Turkey reinstating the death penalty would end hopes of joining the bloc yet attending a summit hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

“Turkish President Erdogan once again speaks to us about Egypt and its political leadership, clearly showing hatred and furthermore expressing his continued embrace of the terrorist Brotherhood group,” Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez said in a statement.

Relations between Ankara and Cairo have been strained since the Egyptian military, then led by Sisi, ousted President Mohamed Mursi of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 after mass protests against his rule.

Hafez cited rights accusations against Turkey, including the existence of 70,000 political prisoners, jailing of 175 journalists and firing of 130,000 government employees.

“This narrative illustrates the lack of credibility of what the Turkish president is promoting,” he said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had on Tuesday chided EU leaders for being with Sisi days after “these young saplings were martyred” for killing Egypt’s chief prosecutor in 2015…”

  22. Moroccan-Dutch Employment Rate Returns to 2008 High in Netherlands (moroccoworldnews, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2019/02/266782/moroccan-dutch-employment-rate-netherlands/

“It appears that Moroccan-Dutch nationals are highly integrated into the labor market in the Netherlands.

According to data from the state-owned surveyor, Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek, the employment rate of Dutch people of Moroccan and Turkish migrant background has increased since before the 2008 market downturn.

According to the survey, 153,000 Moroccan-Dutch people had paid work in 2018. Of nationals with Turkish migration background, according to the survey,187,000 people had jobs in 2018.

In 2008, 55 percent of Moroccan-Dutch aged 15-75 were employed. The percentage dipped to 51 percent in 2014 and recovered to 57 percent in 2018.

“The difference in labor participation between men and women is also relatively large among people with a Moroccan background (65.8 version 49.0 percent),” said the report.

However, the gender gap in the labor market between Moroccan men and women has decreased since 2008.

There was also a gender gap for people with Turkish background, according to the report.

“Within the group of people with a Turkish background, the difference in labor participation between men and women is greatest.” The report added that the difference has not decreased in the past 10 years: 72 percent of men work compared to only 50 percent of women.

The survey found that people with Antillean, Aruban, or Surinamese background still have lower employment rates than they did in 2008.

Of Dutch people with immigrant backgrounds, Moroccans are the third-most populous in the Netherlands, after the Turkish and Surinamese, according to SpringerLink.

In January 2005, 314,699 people of whom “at least one parent was born in Morocco were living in the Netherlands,” SpringerLink noted.”

  23. Morocco Closes More Unlicensed ‘Justice and Spirituality’ Headquarters (moroccoworldnews, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2019/02/266793/morocco-justice-and-spirituality-headquarters/

“Moroccan administrative authorities have decided to close the headquarters of the banned Justice and Spirituality, or Al Adl wa Al Ihssan movement, in the cities of Fez, Tangier, and El Jadida, a source told Morocco World News.

The source said the closures, carried out on Wednesday, comes in response to the movement’s violations of zoning laws regulating urbanism and public spaces.

Earlier this month, administration authorities shut down several unlicensed headquarters used by the Justice and Spirituality movement for secret meetings in several cities, including Inezgane, Kenitra, and Casablanca.

The movement’s “secret meetings” in the unlicensed facilities violate Law 12-90 on urbanism.

The law makes it illegal to use a residence as a public place for meetings.

People who violate the law may be subject to a fine ranging between MAD 10,000 and MAD 100,000.

The banned movement also violated Law 1-58-377, which stipulates that the organizers of public meetings should send a statement with the time, location, and purpose of the meeting to the local government administration.

Administrative authorities have accused the movement of redesigning some of the places as mosques, which is illegal without a permission from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

Al Adl wa Al Ihssane movement was founded in the 1980s by Sheikh Abdessalam Yassine, a former teacher and the late spiritual guide of the group.

The Islamist movement has been banned from political activities because of what the government calls its antagonistic approach towards the Moroccan government.”

“MUZFFARGARH: A student of a religious seminary was allegedly kidnapped and subjected to torture and rape at Khangarh on Tuesday.

In the FIR, a student of Madressah Ashrafia stated that he was going to the mosque to say Maghrib prayers when two men riding a motorcycle intercepted him near the seminary. The bikers, he said, blindfolded him at gunpoint and took him to an unknown place where they also called some other men, who subjected him to torture and rape.

He said the kidnappers and their accomplices also inflicted cuts on his body with a knife and blades, leaving him unconscious.

Later, the suspects threw him near the seminary and fled away.

The police after recording the victim’s statement shifted him to the district headquarters hospital for treatment. The police sources said the medico-legal report confirmed torture and rape.

A police official said initial investigation suggested that a land dispute could be a motive of the heinous crime.

The Khangarh station house officer said a case had been registered against the nominated and unidentified suspects under sections 377 and 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code and they would soon be arrested.”

The sources further added that 3 Taliban militants were killed during the operations of the Afghan Special Forces which were conducted in Achin district of Nangarhar and Chak district of Wardak province. Afghan security forces have killed more than 60 Taliban fighters in the region since last week, including 8 within the last 36 hours.

The Afghan Special Forces conducted similar operations in Tarinkot city of Uruzgan and Dasht-e-Qala district of Takhar province leaving 14 Taliban militants dead, the sources said.

“Afghan Special Forces conducted a raid in Charkh district and destroyed over 4,600 pounds of homemade explosives,” the sources said adding that “Air strikes in Zurmat district of Paktia province killed 3 Taliban fighters.”

At least 19 Taliban militants were killed during the Afghan Special Forces operations and airstrikes which were conducted in Sangin district of Helmand, Qarabagh and Andar districts of Ghazni, and Shindand district of Herat province, the sources said.”

  26. Turkey to continue cooperation with China despite Uighur row: FM (hurriyetdailynews, Feb 27, 2019)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-to-continue-cooperation-with-china-despite-uighur-row-fm-141523

“Turkey’s determination in cooperating with China as part of the latter’s “One Belt One Road Initiative” has not changed despite an ongoing spat over the treatment of Uighur Turks, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu has said, reiterating Ankara’s call for Beijing to “separate terrorists from innocent civilians.”

At a conference at TOBB University of Economics and Technology on Feb. 27, Çavu?o?lu said he had a lengthy meeting with China’s new ambassador to Turkey, Deng Li, on Feb. 26 in the Turkish capital to discuss recent developments.

“We are following the problems of the Uighur Turks very closely. It’s real that there is a problem over there. Otherwise, there would not be that much global attention,” Çavu?o?lu stressed.

There are some problems, but there are those who are also trying to manipulate them by distorted facts on social media, the minister added. “But, still, this does not deny that there is a problem,” he said.

“What can be done on this? First, cooperation with China. Second, cooperation with international organizations. For example, a delegation from the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation [OIC] is in China for investigation. We are now waiting for their report.”

Ties between the two countries were strained after Turkey harshly slammed China over imposing restrictions on Uighur Turks in a written statement on Feb. 9 that said “It is no longer a secret that more than one million Uighur Turks incurring arbitrary arrests are subjected to torture and political brainwashing in internment camps and prisons. Uighurs who are not detained in these camps are under heavy pressure.”

China responded to the Turkish statement and denied allegations over the state of the Uighur Turks, while highlighting that it needs to fight against terrorism.

Every nation has the right to fight against terrorism, and there are Uighur Turks who had joined ISIL, Çavu?o?lu said. “An Uighur Turk who joined DAESH is a terrorist, just like we see a Turkish citizen joining the PKK or the YPG as terrorist. But what we tell the Chinese side is that innocent civilians should be separated from the terrorists. I said this to the Chinese ambassador, with whom I had a lengthy meeting yesterday.”

Turkey’s wish is to be in close cooperation with China for the resolution of this problem, the foreign minister stated.

On a question about China’s massive “One Belt One Road Initiative,” Çavu?o?lu described it as a project of a big vision and expressed Turkey’s continued interest in it.

“The fact that we have a problem with China on an issue should not necessarily hinder our cooperation on other matters. We may link China’s One Belt One Road Initiative with our own Middle Corridor Initiative so that a direct line between London and Beijing could be set up,” he stated.

Turkey and China signed the “Memorandum of Understanding on Aligning the Belt and Road Initiative and the Middle Corridor Initiative” in 2015 in a bid to align the two projects.

China urges objective view on Uighurs

Earlier in the week, Çavu?o?lu attended a U.N. Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva and repeated Turkey’s expectations from China regarding the Uighur Turks. Beijing replied to criticisms voiced at that meeting and called on countries to take an objective view of China’s policy.

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said certain people from Turkey have recently been “neglecting the facts” about Xinjiang and making irresponsible and “nasty” remarks.

Turkey has itself been a victim of terrorism and separatist forces for a long time, he said.

“But some people in Turkey do not see the basic facts, and keep besmirching China’s counter-terrorism and de-radicalization efforts and slandering the steps taken by China’s Xinjiang autonomous regional government. It can only be said that there is a hidden agenda,” Lu said.

“We urge the individual countries you mention to objectively view China’s counter-terrorism and de-radicalization steps, stop making mistaken comments and take actual measure to protect international counter-terrorism cooperation,” he said.

U.N. experts and activists say the camps hold one million Uighurs, who speak a Turkic language, and other Muslims. China has denied accusations of mistreatment and deems criticism within the U.N. council as interference in its sovereignty.”

The centre at the National Skill University will provide vocational training and tourism education.

The agreement was signed by Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) President Serdar Cam, Pakistani Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood and National Vocational Training Centre Chairman Javed Hassan.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Cam said this institution would help our Pakistani brothers and sisters to receive quality education.

“I am very happy today to sign this agreement which will help to boost education and tourism in Pakistan,” Cam said.

Pakistan’s education minister thanked Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish government and TIKA for approving the mega-project.

“I am very thankful to the Turkish leadership which is establishing a state-of-the-art hospitality institution in Pakistan which will help to our young men and women to receive quality education and training,” Mahmood said

  29. Over 140 irregular migrants held across Turkey (aa, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/over-140-irregular-migrants-held-across-turkey/1404667

“At least 142 irregular migrants were held across Turkey, security sources said on Wednesday.

In the northwestern Edirne province — bordering Bulgaria and Greece — gendarmerie forces held six irregular migrants preparing to illegally cross to Greece, said a security source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

In another operation, 39 Afghan migrants were held in a rubber boat en route to Greece by the Turkish Coast Guard in Ayvacik district of the northwestern province of Canakkale.

Separately, in the eastern province of Van, bordering Iran, gendarmerie forces caught in a bus 50 migrants who entered Turkey illegally, including 29 Afghan, 14 Pakistani and one South African national.

Police detained two people during the operation.

Meanwhile, the security forces in Baskale district of Van also caught six Afghan nationals who illegally crossed in Turkey.

In another northwestern province, Tekirdag, 36 irregular migrants were held by gendarmerie forces while preparing to cross overseas illegally.

Some 29 Pakistanis, six Afghans and one Uzbek national were held by the security forces after police stopped three vehicles on a highway between Istanbul and Tekirdag provinces.

Four alleged human smugglers were detained in operation.

Separately, some 11 irregular migrants — two Pakistani and nine Bangladeshi nationals — were held in the Suleymanpasa district of Tekirdag by gendarmerie forces who stopped a suspicious vehicle.

The driver, whose identity was not revealed, was detained by police.

All migrants were later referred to provincial migration directorates.

Turkey has been the main route for refugees trying to cross to Europe, especially since 2011, when the Syrian civil war began.

Some 265,000 irregular migrants were held in Turkey in 2018, according to the Interior Ministry.

The irregular migrants were mostly Afghan, Pakistani, Syrian, and Iraqi nationals.”

  30. Amnesty urges halt to arms to Israel, parties in Yemen war (ansamed, Feb 27, 2019)
    http://www.ansamed.info/ansamed/en/news/sections/politics/2019/02/27/amnesty-urges-halt-to-arms-to-israel-parties-in-yemen-war_4de67c69-7ce4-4555-ae4f-82721759f3d3.html

“Amnesty International has called on all states to immediately suspend the sale and transfer of weapons to Israel and all the parties involved in the conflict in Yemen.

This suspension, it said, should remain in place until there is no longer the risk that these weapons will be used to carry out or facilitate serious human rights violations. “It’s time the world followed in the footsteps of states such as Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Norway, which have announced suspensions of arms sales to Saudi Arabia, sending a clear message that flouting human rights has clear consequences,” Philip Luther, Research and Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, said.

An Amnesty International statement on a review of human rights in 19 states said that the ”USA has also committed to provide Israel with US$38 billion in military aid over the next 10 years despite the impunity that Israeli forces enjoy and the vast number of human rights violations they continue to commit in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

In the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces killed at least 180 Palestinians last year, including 35 children, during protests for the right to return of refugees, according to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.

While a UN Human Rights Council commission of inquiry was set up to look into the killings, Israel has refused to co-operate with the inquiry and has faced little to no pressure to do so.”

”Time and again allies of governments in the region have put lucrative business deals, security co-operation or billions of dollars’ worth of arms sales fuelling abuses and creating a climate where MENA governments feel ‘untouchable’ and above the law,” Luther said.

The organization is calling on all states to give greater support to international mechanisms aiming to provide justice to victims, such as UN inquiries into killings in Gaza, violations in Yemen and those in Syria, as well as the International Criminal Court.

Amnesty decries human rights violations in MENA region

The international community’s chilling complacency towards wide-scale human rights violations in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has emboldened governments to commit appalling violations during 2018 by giving them the sense that they need never fear facing justice, said Amnesty International in a statement on Tuesday. The statement came with the publication of a review of human

rights in the region last year. ”Across MENA throughout 2018 thousands of dissidents and peaceful critics have been victims of shameless government violations on a shocking scale, amid

deafening silence from the international community,” Heba Morayef, Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, said. Amnesty International’s report

reveals that the crackdown on dissent and civil society intensified significantly in Egypt, Iran and Saudi Arabia during 2018. These three states are emblematic of the inadequacy of the

international response to rampant government violations, it said. “In Iran, a wave of mass protests was violently suppressed, with thousands arrested and detained throughout the year.

However, the response from the European Union, which has an ongoing human rights dialogue with the country, was muted,” it added. The statement also criticized the fact that Western

countries such as France and the US continue to sell arms to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Israel despite serious international and human rights violations by the three states.”

  31. How a Swedish city’s marketing campaign was hijacked by the far-right (thelocal, Feb 27, 2019)
    https://www.thelocal.se/20190227/how-a-swedish-citys-marketing-campaign-was-hijacked-by-the-far-right

“A campaign to celebrate a Swedish town’s population milestone was misrepresented by international far-right media as a sign of ‘Islamization’, with a billboard vandalized over the weekend. The Local takes a look at the facts behind the story.

For the past week, the image of a teacher has appeared on a digital billboard welcoming visitors to Gävle, a city in central Sweden. The teacher is a Muslim woman who wears a hijab (a headscarf covering the hair), and the image was widely shared by far-right Twitter accounts and websites, which misrepresented the campaign as ‘Islamization’, before it was vandalized over the weekend.

Multiple instances of vandalism caused the billboard to stop working, as the local Gefle Dagblad was first to report.

In the international reports, details about the context of the campaign were left out. The woman was one of 100 residents of Gävle nominated by fellow locals and chosen to represent the city in a publicity campaign celebrating the fact the city’s population passed 100,000 in 2017.

“We let Gävle residents freely nominate people they saw as good ambassadors for the city. A jury, also made up of Gävle residents, then chose 100 ambassadors, who were all photographed and these photos were put up in different places around Gävle,” municipal press officer Johan Adolfsson told The Local.

He said that in the selection process, the jury was “careful to reflect the diversity of Gävle”, with men, women, children, and people of all ages, sexualities, religions, careers, and backgrounds chosen for the campaign.

The teacher, who grew up in Gävle and became a practising Muslim in her late teens, according to a 2009 interview in the regional newspaper Arbetarbladet, was chosen because of her work with children, despite a cancer diagnosis.

The jury’s explanation for her nomination described her as someone who “is always in a good mood and never gives up” and said that most students and teachers in the city knew the teacher and had positive things to say about her.

Gävle MP Roger Hedlund, a member of the far-right Sweden Democrats, also criticized the sign online, saying that headscarves “reduce women to a simple sex object who must cover up in order not to arouse male desire”.

Several of the international websites which shared the image implied she had been chosen as the city’s sole representative, including Russia Today’s English-language site, Polish conservative news site Najwy?szy Czas, and the major Hungarian news site Origo.

The alt-right website Voice of Europe said that “many Swedes” believed the temporary sign “indicates that the city is Muslim”. It also appeared to explicitly encourage vandalism of the sign, referring to the illegal tradition of burning the city’s Christmas goat, and writing “Maybe the board will meet the same fate?!”

Several of the sites also said the woman was a “guide” or “worked with” a radical mosque, apparently due to the fact she had spoken positively about the opening of a new mosque in Gävle in 2009 and showed a journalist around the building.

Five years later, multiple reports surfaced of board members and an imam at the mosque being accused of radicalism, including sharing photos on social media of Isis flags. There are no reports linking the woman to any of these claims, and it is not clear whether she is still involved in the mosque in any way.

Municipal press officer Johan Adolfsson said that the city plans to continue with the campaign, which will see the pictures on the digital billboard change to a different ambassador each week.

“We have and will continue to include Muslim women, with and without a veil,” Adolfsson said. He also confirmed to The Local that the municipality would report the vandalism to police.

“The response has only been positive: until last week when reactions came to the picture on the billboard,” he added. In fact, the city’s focus on diverse messaging (including LGBT people, people with disabilities, and those of different ethnicities) has been highlighted in a handbook by the Swedish Institute and Foreign Ministry, and in exhibitions around Sweden which will soon also take place in other countries.”

    • Wilson-Raybould recounts conversation with Trudeau: ‘Are you politically interfering with my role?’

    • WSJ – Political Scandal Worsens for Canada’s Justin Trudeau

Former justice minister says prime minister’s top aides repeatedly pressed her to drop the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin

OTTAWA—A political firestorm surrounding Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau became more damaging Wednesday, as his ex-justice minister accused his top aides of repeatedly pressuring her to drop the prosecution of a global engineering and construction firm.

The testimony delivered by Jody Wilson-Raybould to a parliamentary committee offered the most detailed version yet of events fueling a scandal that risks upending Mr. Trudeau’s re-election effort later this year. She said that between September and December, she and her staff had roughly 10 phone calls and 10 meetings about the matter involving SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. with Mr. Trudeau’s senior aides and other government officials, including staff from the finance minister’s office.

“I experienced a consistent and sustained effort by many people within the government to seek to politically interfere in the exercise of prosecutorial discretion,” Ms. Wilson-Raybould said.

The former justice minister recounted how senior government officials, mostly from Mr. Trudeau’s office, attempted to persuade her to order prosecutors to cut a plea deal with SNC-Lavalin, which is based in the politically important province of Quebec. A plea deal would have allowed SNC-Lavalin to avoid a decadelong ban on bidding on government contracts in Canada and elsewhere. These make up a significant portion of the company’s revenue.

“There were expressed statements regarding the necessity of interference in the SNC-Lavalin matter, and the potential for consequences and veiled threats if an [out-of-court settlement] was not made available to SNC-Lavalin,” she said.

Ms. Wilson-Raybould said Mr. Trudeau encouraged her in a Sept. 17 meeting to “find a solution here for SNC-Lavalin, saying that if there was no [plea deal] there would be many jobs lost and SNC-Lavalin would move [its headquarters] from Montreal.” She said she told Mr. Trudeau that she had done her due diligence on SNC-Lavalin and she wasn’t going to interfere in a decision by prosecutors to not pursue a plea deal with the company.

Mr. Trudeau and other senior officials have denied any wrongdoing in their interactions with the former justice minister. At a Wednesday night press conference in Montreal, the Canadian leader said he “completely disagree[s] with the former attorney general’s characterization of events” and defended the work of his top aides.

He added that there were discussions about potential job losses in the event SNC-Lavalin was convicted. But, he said, the final decision on the company’s prosecution “was Ms. Wilson-Raybould’s and hers alone.”

Canada’s ethics watchdog launched a probe into the SNC-Lavalin matter after the Globe and Mail newspaper reported the allegations. In response to a lawmaker’s question, Ms. Wilson-Raybould said that she didn’t believe the lobbying effort violated any laws. But throughout the three-hour-plus hearing, she described the effort as inappropriate.

Canadian prosecutors filed bribery and fraud charges against SNC-Lavalin in 2015, related to activity in Libya during 10 years ended in 2011. The company has also faced bribery charges at home. Its former chief executive pleaded guilty this month to charges related to a bribery scandal involving the construction of a Montreal hospital.

SNC-Lavalin Chief Executive Neil Bruce said last week that an out-of-court settlement would be in the public interest because it would ensure employees, pensioners and suppliers wouldn’t be harmed. The company operates in over 50 countries and employs 50,000 workers world-wide.

In January, Ms. Wilson-Raybould was told she was being moved from the high-profile justice portfolio to the veterans ministry. She told committee members she believes the move was triggered by her refusal to direct prosecutors to drop the criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin.

She stepped down from the cabinet this month, days after the allegations of judicial interference emerged. In her testimony, she said she resigned because “I did not have confidence to sit around the cabinet table.”

Ms. Wilson-Raybould’s testimony represents a pivotal moment for Mr. Trudeau, whose reputation has taken a beating from the SNC-Lavalin affair. His political brand of a modern, transparent leader who was willing to give his cabinet greater leeway in crafting policy helped lift him to power in the fall of 2015.

“This story is potentially toxic for the prime minister’s image,” said Daniel Beland, a political analyst and director of McGill University’s Institute for the Study of Canada in Montreal. Exacerbating matters, Mr. Beland said, was the inability of Mr. Trudeau and his aides to handle the crisis with consistent descriptions of what unfolded.

Ms. Wilson-Raybould said she was told in mid-December by a top adviser to Mr. Trudeau, Michael Wernick, that the prime minister was “going to find a way to get it done one way or the other, so he is in that kind of mood and I wanted you to be aware of it.”

Last week, Mr. Wernick delivered testimony in which he said that at no time did Ms. Wilson-Raybould face inappropriate pressure to strike an out-of-court deal with SNC-Lavalin. He acknowledged, though, that he spoke to Ms. Wilson-Raybould about the implications of prosecuting SNC-Lavalin. “I conveyed to her that a lot of her colleagues and the prime minister were quite anxious about what they were hearing and reading in the business press about the future of the company,” he said.

Polling since the uproar emerged in early February indicates Mr. Trudeau and the Liberal government are bleeding support, less than eight months before the next national election. Surveys from Ipsos Public Affairs and the Angus Reid Institute indicate the opposition Conservatives hold a lead over the governing Liberals in terms of the popular vote.

The fate of SNC-Lavalin is an important issue in Quebec, Canada’s second-largest province and a pivotal electoral battleground. The province’s large pension fund, Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec, is SNC-Lavalin’s biggest shareholder, with a 20% stake. The company employs 9,000 across Canada, including 3,400 in Quebec.
