Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

FURIOUS French protestors are facing off against police in Souillac, where Emmanuel Macron will meet hundreds of the country’s mayors.

The crisis surrounding Emmanuel Macron’s presidency continues to escalate with approval ratings plummeting and protestors staging fiery demonstrations across the country for several weeks. Protestors have now taken to the streets in Souillac ahead of Mr Macron’s arrival today. In tense scenes, demonstrators are facing off against heavily-armed police in the Occitan city.

  6. UK – Muslim Gang jailed for homophobic acid attack on clubbers

Seven gang members have been jailed for spraying acid in the faces of clubbers who tried to break up a fight.

The incident, described as “a sustained and relentless wave of violence” inflicted upon good Samaritans, left one victim with burns to his eyes and a fractured eye socket.

The attackers were sitting in their cars on a crescent in Hackney, northeast London, after a night out in May last year when Onur Ardic, 27, began arguing with a passerby. The victim was quickly surrounded and then punched by Mustafa Kiziltan, 30.

When a group of bystanders leaving a nearby club tried to intervene, Huseyin Onel, 24, returned to one of the cars and picked up a bottle of acid, spraying them

Nine Muslims sentenced following unprovoked assault

A group of Muslims who launched an unprovoked attack, which resulted in a number of people being sprayed with a noxious substance, have been sentenced.

Huseyin Onel, 24 (30.03.94) of no fixed abode, but from the Hackney area, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for applying a noxious substance causing grievous bodily harm (GBH), plus an additional three years on extended licence. Onel was sentenced to nine years each for six counts of casting a noxious substance and three years for violent disorder to run concurrently.

Mehmet Tekagac, 30 (03.09.88) of Kenworthy Road, E9 was sentenced to 14-and-a-half years in prison for applying a noxious substance causing GBH, plus an additional three years on extended licence. To run concurrently, Tekagac was sentenced to eight years for robbery and three years for violent disorder.

Onur Ardic, 27 (02.11.91) of Frampton Park Road, E9 was sentenced to 14 years in prison for applying a noxious substance causing GBH plus three years on extended licence. He was also sentenced to three years for violent disorder to run concurrently.

Guven Ulas, 20 (21.12.98) of Pultney Street, N1, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for violent disorder.

Mustafa Kiziltan, 30 (10.09.88) of no fixed abode, but from the Hackney area, was sentenced to a total of three years in prison – 27 months for violent disorder and nine months for dangerous driving. He was also sentenced to three months for failing to stop, this will run concurrently.

Serkan Kiziltan, 22 (03.11.96) of Well Street, E9, was sentenced to 18 months for violent disorder.

Umit Kaygisiz, 21 (26.12.97) of Orsman Road, N1, was sentenced to a total of 28 months in prison for violent disorder and attempting to convey a prohibited item into prison (namely a mobile phone).

Yasam Erdogan, 24 (24.11.94) of Nightingale Road, N1, was sentenced to 18 months for violent disorder, suspended for two years.

Turgut Adakan, 23 (20.06.95) of Roman Road, E6, was sentenced to 18 months for violent disorder, suspended for two years.

All nine were sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday, 17 January.
The incident unfolded at approximately 05:15hrs on 5 May 2018, when a verbal altercation began between an unidentified male and Onur Ardic who was part a group of nine men who were sitting in cars on Alvington Crescent in Hackney.
The unidentified male went to speak to Ardic and was quickly surrounded by the group before Mustafa Kiziltan punched him. En masse, the group launched a ferocious attack, punching and kicking the male for a sustained period.

A group of people who had left a nearby club attempted to intervene to stop the attack with one of them – a man in his 20s – filming the assault.

The suspect group took exception to this and attacked the man, kicking him to the ground and attempting to steal his phone. A number of this victim’s group went to their friend’s aid and a large brawl erupted.

During this, Huseyin Onel – a member of the suspect group – entered one of the cars and was seen to exit a couple of seconds later carrying a white bottle. He used this bottle to spray a noxious substance, in the faces of a number of people.
On realising the escalation of events, a number of the victim’s group began to run from the scene but Onel calmly targeted them, spraying liquid at their faces as they attempted to flee.

Other members of the group – Mehmet Tekagac and Onur Ardic – were also involved in the corrosive substance attack on one of the group.
Meanwhile, the vicious assault continued on the victim who had filmed the initial assault and only ended when a bag containing his phone had been ripped from him.

He was left with a fractured eye socket and corrosive burns to his eye, with it initially believed his injuries would be life changing, but his recovery was described by doctors as ‘miraculous’.

The suspects then got into three cars and drove from the scene, shouting homophobic comments at members of the group, and that they ‘run Hackney’.
Officers from Hackney, working alongside a crime scene examiner (CSE) attended the scene and began to collate evidence and secure CCTV that captured the vast majority of the attacks.

Officers reviewed the footage and were able to identify the majority of the suspects. They were assisted by the CSE and Met’s Fingerprint Bureau, who were able to confirm which suspects had been holding the white bottle containing the noxious substance, and who had been attacking the unknown victim, which helped strengthen the case that secured these convictions.

Over a four-month period, all nine suspects were identified, arrested and charged.
Detective Constable David Leitner, of the Central East Command Unit, led the investigation. He said: “Seven violent and dangerous men have been removed from London’s streets today and will now spend a lengthy time locked up in prison.

“The level of violence used in this attack, coupled with the speed that this incident escalated, are truly shocking.

“A group of people who were enjoying themselves at the end of a night out were subjected to a sustained and relentless wave of violence including the use of a corrosive substance – because they acted as good Samaritans to help a male being subjected to a vicious assault.

“The original victim who was attacked by the group has never been traced but I hope he, and all those who were set upon by this violent group of individuals, will take some comfort from the fact that this group has been convicted.”

At Wood Green Crown Court on 21 November 2018, three of the group were found guilty as follows:

Huseyin Onel was found guilty of eight counts of applying a corrosive fluid with intent and violent disorder.

Mehmet Tekagac was found guilty of applying a corrosive fluid with intent and robbery. He had earlier pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

Onur Ardic was found guilty of applying a corrosive substance with intent. He had earlier pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

The six other men earlier pleaded guilty at Wood Green Crown Court to violent disorder.

    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201901181071610790-us-envoy-daesh-turkey/

“Former US Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to defeat the Daesh* terror group Brett McGurk said in a column on Friday that Turkey is not a reliable partner in Syria as the United States prepares to withdraw military forces from the country.

“On Syria, Turkey is not a reliable partner,” McGurk wrote in the Washington Post.

McGurk explained that the Syrian opposition forces Ankara supports are “marbled with extremists” and are too small in numbers to serve as an alternative to the Syrian Democratic Forces or have an effective impact in challenging Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Turkey cannot operate in Syria without substantial US military support, he added.

The former envoy also said discussions are underway to have the Turkish military or Turkish-backed opposition fighters moved into areas of northeastern Syria that are now controlled by the SDF.

Any such move, he said, would spark chaos and create an environment for extremists to thrive. The entry of Turkish-backed opposition forces would also likely displace thousands of Kurds and threaten vulnerable Christian communities in areas of eastern Syria, he added.

“Units of the Turkish Armed Forces, deployed in Afrin, gave a relevant response to the attack by YPG terrorists from Tall Rifat,” the statement said.

The ministry’s comment comes after in early December, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Ankara was ready to launch a military operation against Kurdish militias — which it considers to be terrorist groups — on the eastern bank of the Euphrates as well as in Syria’s Manbij, located near the Turkish border, if the United States did not facilitate the pullout of the militia from the region.

Erdogan later said that the operation had been postponed following his December 14 phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, who later announced plans to withdraw US troops from Syria.”

  13. 41-year-old Afghan Migrant Charged with Murdering Teen Wife (breitbart, Jan 18, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/01/18/41-year-old-migrant-charged-murdering-teen-wife/

“A 41-year-old Afghan migrant has been charged by Swedish prosecutors in connection with the alleged murder of his teenage wife in Stockholm in 2016 after being on the run for two years.

The 41-year-old was arrested in the spring of 2018 in Iran after having first left Stockholm and then left Sweden entirely following the murder, and was on the run for two years, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

The victim had come to Sweden as an asylum seeker during the height of the migrant crisis in the latter half of 2015 and stated at the time she was 16 years old, although prosecutors alleged she may have been either 18 or 19.

She was then transferred to live in an HVB home, a home for vulnerable young people, but went missing in late March of the following year. Her body was discovered in the Hökarängen area of southern Stockholm two months later with police initially believing she may have been a victim of honour violence.

After discovering that her husband had been living in Sweden as an asylum seeker in Småland, police were able to track the phone calls between the two and found that both had been in the same area on the date of the murder. He later fled the country and was only discovered in Iran two years later and brought back to Sweden.

Prosecutor Tomas Malmenby said of the case: “She wanted to free herself and her husband couldn’t accept it,” while the lawyer for the 41-year-old claimed that while he had met with the woman, the last time he had seen her, she had been alive.

The pair were said to have been married in Afghanistan while the victim was still a child; marriages of minors have become a major topic in both Sweden, Germany and more recently in the U.S.A. due to mass migration.

The Swedish government addressed the issue last year by passing legislation that sees the country now refusing to recognise the marriages of underage persons even if the marriage was legal in the country in which they originate, despite some opposition from the country’s governing parties at the time.”

  14. Judge creates right for illegal alien to block deportation … so she can sue law enforcement

We are told everything illegal aliens want to do in our country is completely legal and they are entitled to all citizen rights, including citizenship for children. On the other hand, everything our law enforcement wants to do to enforce the law against them is somehow held illegal.

We are having a national debate over the effectiveness of a border wall, but we should first have a debate over whether we have a border at all. Judges are creating new constitutional rights for illegal immigrants to invade at breakneck speed, rendering our constitutional protections essentially binding on the entire globe. Nothing should surprise us any more, but the latest story of an El Salvadoran illegal immigrant from Frederick, Maryland, should jolt us all out of our slumber.

Roxana Orellana Santos is an illegal alien from El Salvador who had no right to come to this country in 2005 and no right to remain in this country against the will of the people as expressed through long-standing statute. Pursuant to our laws, Santos was detained by Border Patrol when she broke into our country in Texas and then failed to appear for an immigration hearing. In 2007, an immigration judge issued an order to deport her.

A year into her fugitive life, Frederick cops informally questioned her outside a restaurant on October 7, 2008,

  15. Congress Earns ‘Nero Award’ for Fiddling While America is Invaded
Why Democrats’ actions are especially egregious.
    January 18, 2019
    Michael Cutler

President Trump has decided to not sign off on the federal budget until it includes money for a physical barrier to finally secure the dangerous and highly porous U.S./Mexican border from the un-inspected entry of aliens and cargo.

That tough decision has been a long time coming.

With no budget, nonessential sections of the government have been shut down and some federal employees deemed “essential” are working without pay.

As a former federal employee I can certainly empathize with those federal employees. I recall working without pay when prior partial government shutdowns occurred.

Many pundits and “political analysts” have said that the administration should compromise. As things now stand, there is nothing to compromise about. Any “compromise” with Pelosi and company would only compromise national security. That “compromise” has been ongoing for decades and we have all too many dead bodies that prove how dangerous open borders are.

The media is focused on how many days federal employees have gone without pay, but no one is keeping track of how many years our borders have failed to prevent the entry of narcotics, weapons, criminals, terrorists and foreign workers who displace hard-working Americans and drive down the wages of those who are fortunate to keep their jobs.

  16. A Federal Appeals Court Just Took A Big Swing At Planned Parenthood

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted an injunction forbidding Texas from stripping Planned Parenthood of Medicaid funds Thursday, while stridently criticizing the abortion provider for its rhetoric and medical practices.

“Planned Parenthood’s reprehensible conduct, captured in undercover videos, proves that it is not a ‘qualified’ provider under the Medicaid Act, so we are confident we will ultimately prevail,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement after Thursday’s ruling.

The case arose after a pro-life group called the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) released videos purporting to show Planned Parenthood violating medical and ethical standards codified in federal law and state regulations. Texas terminated its Medicaid provider agreement with Planned Parenthood shortly thereafter, citing infractions documented in the videos.

The demonstration was held outside the Abi Bakr Issidik Mosque, frequented by members of the Moroccan community, in Utrecht, the central Netherlands.

During the demonstration, members of Pegida made speeches and showed a movie insulting Islam.

Tight security measures were taken around the mosque, including the installation of high barricades, and extra police were dispatched to the area.

After the Pegida demonstration, some local residents behind the barricades clashed with security forces.

    Police detained two people.

Jamal Houri, press secretary for the mosque, told Anadolu Agency that Pegida tries to be deliberately provocative.

“Even though the area they chose for the demonstration was provocative, the mosque administration and community decided not to follow their provocation and ignored them completely,” Houri said.

“This is the best response we can give them. Because paying attention to them works in their favor,” he added.

  23. Deutsche Pravda – Germans vastly overestimate number of migrants

People’s perceptions often do not correspond with reality – as proved once again by a recent survey.

People in 37 different countries were asked key facts about their society, such as immigration levels and the scale of sexual harrassment, for example.

The Ipsos study showed that people in Germany vastly overestimated the number of migrants.

Human rights group Amnesty International has described as shameful the decision by several European states to block NGO migrant rescue ships from docking in their ports.

The group says Europe’s migrant policy is putting lives in danger, both at sea and in Libya, where most of the asylum seekers set out to try to reach Europe. Henry Ridgwell reports from London.

  27. Yemen’s Houthis finance war with fuel from Iran: UN report (mee, Jan 18, 2019)
    https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/yemen-houthis-finance-war-fuel-iran-un-report-377829955

“Fuel loaded at ports in Iran has generated revenue to finance Yemen’s Houthi rebels in their fight against the country’s Saudi-backed government, according to a report by a United Nations panel of experts seen by AFP.

Citing an 85-page report sent to the UN Security Council, AFP reported on Friday that the panel discovered fuel was being “loaded from ports in the Islamic Republic of Iran under false documentation” to avoid UN inspections.

To do it, the experts said “a small number of companies, both within Yemen and outside” have operated as “front companies”, using fake documents to conceal the fuel shipments.

“The revenue from the sale of fuel was then used to finance the Houthi war effort,” the report said, according to AFP.

AFP said the report describes the fuel as being “for the benefit of a listed individual” who is on a UN sanctions blacklist.

The news agency did not provide further details about this person’s identity.

The experts have in past reports pointed to a possible Iranian link to missiles fired by Houthi rebels at Saudi Arabia, after they traveled to Riyadh to examine weapons debris.

In a previous report, the experts said they were investigating monthly fuel donations from Iran valued at $30m.

Iran has repeatedly denied that it is providing military support to the Houthis, who seized the Yemeni capital Sanaa in 2014 and ousted President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Saudi Arabia launched a military offensive in Yemen in 2015, supported by the United Arab Emirates, to push back the rebels and restore Hadi to power.

    Saudi-led coalition bombings

The Houthis have control of Sanaa and the key Yemeni port city of Hodeidah, a main entry point for most of the imports to Yemen that has seen fierce fighting between Houthi and pro-government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition.

The warring sides agreed to a ceasefire in Hodeidah during UN-brokered talks last month in Sweden and UN monitors are on the ground to oversee a pullback of forces from the port.

“Throughout the reporting period of 2018, Yemen continued its slide toward humanitarian and economic catastrophe,” the experts said in their report, according to AFP, describing the country as “deeply fractured” with a broken economy.

The ongoing war has plunged Yemen into a dire humanitarian crisis in which thousands are on the brink of famine.

Government forces and the Saudi-led coalition have made “significant progress” on the ground against the Houthis, the UN experts said in their report, but “the aim of restoring the authority of the government throughout Yemen is far from being realised”.

The panel also reported on its investigations into five airstrikes in Houthi-controlled areas of the country, including a bombing of a bus carrying children and a shelling attack in August.

It found that the Saudi-led coalition was responsible in four cases, including the bus bombing that killed 43 people and wounded 63 others, the majority of whom were children.

The experts also said the coalition was “likely responsible” in another incident in April 2018 involving the bombing of a building in Hodeidah that killed 14 civilians, including seven children.”

  28. UK Arabs face ‘shocking’ job discrimination (memo, Jan 18, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190118-uk-arabs-face-shocking-job-discrimination/

“Ethnic minority Britons face “shocking” discrimination in the labour market, with those originating from Muslim-majority countries facing the greatest obstacles, new UK research has revealed today.

According to a study by the Centre for Social Investigation at Nuffield College, University of Oxford, Britons originating from the Middle East and North Africa have to submit 90 per cent more applications than the average white British citizens. Similarly, those from south Asia, principally Pakistanis, had to submit 70 per cent more applications, with black Britons – in particular Nigerians – up to 80 per cent more. The study shows little change from levels recorded in the late 1960s.

Co-author of the study and emeritus fellow of Nuffield College, Professor Anthony Heath, said of the findings:

The absence of any real decline in discrimination against black British and people of Pakistani background is a disturbing finding, which calls into question the effectiveness of previous policies. Ethnic inequality remains a burning injustice and there needs to be a radical rethink about how to tackle it

As part of the study, researchers sent almost 3,200 applications to both manual and non-manual jobs – including software engineers, marketing, chefs and shop assistants – advertised on a popular recruitment platform between November 2016 and December 2017. The survey found that while those of ethnic minorities suffered significantly, those originally from western Europe and the US were treated almost as well as the majority group.

The researchers added that the high levels of discrimination towards those from countries with a sizeable Muslim population echoed “strong anti-Muslim attitudes recorded in recent surveys”.

“The persistent gaps in call-backs found for more visible and culturally distant minorities, regardless of the occupation considered or the information included in the application, suggest that employers may simply read no further as soon as they see a Middle East-sounding or African-sounding name,” Dr Valentina Di Stasio, co-author and an assistant professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, said.

The study marked the first that time that the experiences of Britons originating from the Arab world were included, so it could not be ascertained whether the levels of discrimination they faced had changed over time.

The UK has witnessed a rise in anti-immigrant and Islamophobic rhetoric in recent years, particularly in the aftermath of the Brexit vote to leave the European Union. In October, statistics released by the Home Office revealed that religious hate crime rocketed by 40 per cent in a year across England and Wales, with over half of all attacks targeting Muslims.”

  29. Germany to limit asylum from Maghreb countries  (memo, Jan 18, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190118-germany-to-limit-asylum-from-maghreb-countries/

“The German parliament’s lower house approved on Friday a contentious law to limit asylum applications from Georgia and three Maghreb countries Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, Reuters reports.

Some 509 German lawmakers, mostly from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative-left coalition government, voted in favor of the legislation, which declared Georgia, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia as “safe countries of origin”.

Also 138 lawmakers, mainly from the opposition Greens and the Left Party, voted against the draft law.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has defended government’s plan, saying that last year less than 3 percent of asylum applications from these four countries were found credible.

He said the new legislation would speed up the processing of asylum applications and enable faster deportation of illegal migrants.

The legislation still needs the approval of the upper house the Bundesrat, where the opposition Greens and Left Party are planing to block it.”

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-thailand-south/two-buddhist-monks-shot-dead-in-thailands-restive-south-idUSKCN1PC26B

“Unknown gunmen shot dead two Buddhist monks and injured two others on Friday at a temple in the southern Thai province of Narathiwat, which has a mainly ethnic Malay, Muslim population.

“We believe that at least six assailants were involved in the shooting and are at large,” a police spokesman in the Su-ngai Padi district told Reuters.

The victims, an abbot and vice abbot, were killed inside the Rattanupap Buddhist temple on Friday night. The two injured people were being treated at a nearby hospital.

A separatist insurgency has dragged on in southern Thailand for more than fifteen years. More than 6,900 people have been killed and 13,000 injured in the area since 2004 when violence intensified, independent monitoring group Deep South Watch says.

Religious figures, both Buddhists and Muslims as well as state officials, have often been targeted for attacks.

  31. Europe’s patience with Iran wears thin, tiptoes toward Trump (reuters, Jan 18, 2019)
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-iran-nuclear-eu-insight/europes-patience-with-iran-wears-thin-tiptoes-toward-trump-idUSKCN1PC2AE

“In Tehran on Jan. 8 during a meeting with European envoys, Iranian officials abruptly stood up, walked out and slammed the door in an extraordinary break with protocol.

The French, British, German, Danish, Dutch, and Belgian diplomats in the Iranian foreign ministry room had incensed the officials with a message that Europe could no longer tolerate ballistic missile tests in Iran and assassination plots on European soil, according to four EU diplomats.

“There was a lot of drama, they didn’t like it, but we felt we had to convey our serious concerns,” one of the diplomats said. “It shows the relationship is becoming more tense,” a second said.

An Iranian official declined to comment on the meeting.

The next day, the European Union imposed its first sanctions on Iran since world powers agreed the 2015 Vienna nuclear arms control deal with Tehran.

The sanctions were largely symbolic but the stormy meeting encapsulated the unexpected shift in European diplomacy since the end of last year. Smaller, more dovish EU countries have joined France and Britain in a harder stance on Tehran, including considering new economic sanctions, diplomats say.

Those could include asset freezes and travel bans on Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and Iranians developing the Islamic Republic’s ballistic missile program, three diplomats said.

The new approach moves Europe closer to U.S. President Donald Trump’s policy of isolating Iran with tough sanctions even though European governments still support the 2015 Vienna deal from which he withdrew in May.

Although there are diverging views in Europe, the shift could have consequences for President Hassan Rouhani’s government as it looks to European capitals to salvage that deal.

It could also strengthen anti-Western sentiment in Iran and lead to more aggressive Iranian moves around the Middle East, where the Islamic Republic is involved in proxy wars with its main regional rival Saudi Arabia…”

  32. CTD releases list of 22 most wanted terrorists (tribune, Jan 18, 2019)
    https://tribune.com.pk/story/1891564/1-ctd-releases-list-22-wanted-terrorists/

“The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has prepared a list of 22 most wanted terrorists involved in suicide bombings and terrorist activities in Punjab.

The government has fixed head money on 18 of the most dangerous terrorists ranging from Rs10 million to Rs200,000.

According to the list, a copy of which is available with the Daily Express, the terrorists are wanted in cases pertaining to attacks on former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, former prime minister Shaukat Aziz and former Punjab interior minister Shuja Khanzada as well as on intelligence agency installations and facilitating suicide attacks on buses. According to sources, the interior ministry has been formally requested to announce the names and head money of the terror suspects.

The list has been compiled to ensure immediate arrest of the terrorists, sources said.”

  34. Handshakes high on the agenda as Denmark’s immigration minister awards nine citizenships (thelocal, Jan 18, 2019)
    https://www.thelocal.dk/20190118/handshakes-high-on-the-agenda-as-denmarks-immigration-minister-awards-nine-citizenships

“Minister for Immigration and Integration Inger Støjberg awarded Danish citizenship to nine nationalised Danes on Thursday as a newly-introduced form of ceremony was held for the first time.

The constitutional ceremony (grundlovsceremoni) will normally take place in local municipalities, but Thursday’s occasion involved nine new Danes who travelled to Copenhagen from across Denmark.

As part of new rules on citizenship which came into effect on January 1st, participants at citizenship ceremonies are required to shake hands with their local official. The new ceremony is provided for by a citizenship bill agreed by the government, the Danish People’s Party and the Social Democrats on June 29th last year.

The law requires applicants for Danish citizenship to shake hands palm-to-palm. Gloves may not be worn. The new rule is largely seen as targeting Muslims who refuse to shake hands with members of the opposite sex.

Støjberg left no doubt as to her view on the importance of the gesture in her speech at Thursday’s ceremony by saying the handshake itself represented the moment applicants became citizens of Denmark.

“It’s in exactly that moment [of the handshake] that you become citizens,” she said according to Ritzau’s report of the occasion.

Thomas Andresen, mayor of South Jutland town Aabenraa and a representative of the same Liberal party as Støjberg, criticised the handshake aspect of the ceremony on Thursday, calling it “over the top” and a demonstration of “supremacy”.

“It’s a gift to be given a citizenship, but to conclude (the procedure) with a handshake required by law is over the top,” Andresen said in comments given to broadcaster DR.

“If you don’t shake hands, you don’t get citizenship, and risk not being able to go on living in the country. For me, that’s a way of demonstrating supremacy,” he said.

Taking place at Eigtveds Pakhus in Copenhagen, there were more cameras present than participants in the ceremony and journalists from Sweden and Germany were amongst those on hand to observe proceedings, Ritzau writes.

“There is something quite outstanding about being awarded Danish citizenship,” Støjberg said.

Celebratory drinks and canapés were offered after formalities were completed.

“Now we can enjoy some hygge together. That’s also a part of being a Dane,” Støjberg said.

As municipalities will be responsible for future ceremonies, refusal by applicants to shake hands could theoretically require mayors to report them to immigration authorities.

“I would find it difficult to report an applicant. It’s a little bit informant-like. We have not asked to have to do this, so I have appealed for the state to take on this task,” Andresen said to DR.

Several Danish mayors have expressed their dissatisfaction with the demand on municipalities to carry out the handshake-compulsory ceremonies. Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told DR in the autumn that he would accept local municipalities declining to provide for the final step in naturalisation.

“Then we will have to see it through in another way. We believe the right place to do this is in local democracy,” Rasmussen said.”

  35. Hamburg police investigate axe murder of Syrian activist (thelocal, Jan 18, 2019)
    https://www.thelocal.de/20190118/hamburg-police-investigate-axe-murder-of-syrian-activist

“Hamburg police are investigating the murder of a Syrian pharmacist and refugee activist who was killed in an axe attack in the city’s Harburg district on Tuesday evening.

The man was found on the footpath outside his apartment early on Tuesday evening with several axe wounds to his upper body. His unconscious body was transferred to hospital but he died a short time later.

Named Mohamed J. due to German privacy laws, the man had lived in Hamburg for years and was a prominent member of the local community. He studied, worked and later married in Hamburg, while retaining links with aid groups in his native Syria.

Aside from running a pharmacy in the neighbourhood, he was also known as the chairman of an association which provided support and integration help for Syrian refugees.

He had also presented a number of lectures to the German Red Cross on Syrian customs and practices while he had also returned to Syria to help refugees during the Civil War.

Police said on Friday that they were searching for two men seen in the Harburger Rathausstraße area on the evening in question. One was armed with a hammer, the other with a hatchet.

The police indicated they were still investigating a motive for the murder, but that it did not appear to be a random attack.

Bild reported on Friday that the man was an outspoken critic of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while the Hamburger Abendblatt reported that he had been a member of a Syrian shadow government organization.

Flowers and candles were visible outside the Vivo Pharmacy in Harburg on Friday morning, with mourners leaving notes of support to the man’s wife and two children.”

Creating a science education that is transformative implies not only how science is a political activity but also the ways in which students might see and use science and science education in ways transformative of the institutional and interpersonal power structures that play a role in their lives.”

On January 5, 2019, Canadian cleric Younus Kathrada uploaded to the Muslim Youth of Victoria Facebook page a video in which he responded to the media backlash that followed a MEMERI TV video documenting a recent sermon of his in which he said that saying “Merry Christmas” is worse than murder and adultery (see MEMRI TV Clip No. 6906) .

Sheikh Kathrada said that he never has and never will encourage violence, and he criticized an opinion article written for Postmedia by Licia Corbella, whom he referred to as “this moron, this imbecile, this sad excuse for a human being.”

Sheikh Kathrada further said that he stands by his statement that Muslims should be offended when people worship Jesus or refer to him as the son of God, but that this does not necessitate violence.

He further criticized the media for wanting to make Muslims look like savages and said that since a proper Islamic state – which he said does not exist today – would punish murder, adultery, and other severe crimes by things such as death and amputation, his remarks cannot be taken to mean that he encourages these behaviors.

He concluded by saying: “I’m not your lap dog and I’m not your puppet. So good luck next time.”

For the 54th anniversary of Fatah’s founding, an Alkofiya TV (Gaza) reporter visited the Nidal Al-‘Amoudi Battalion of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades.

The Nidal Al-‘Amoudi Battalion is a Gaza-based Fatah splinter group that claims to be the true followers of Yasser Arafat’s legacy.

At the group’s Yasser Arafat Base, the reporter interviewed the battalion’s spokesman, Abu Muhammad, who said that the Al-Aqsa Brigades will persist on Yasser Arafat’s path of liberating Palestine and eliminating Israel.

Abu Muhammad also said that “the worst is yet to come” because the Al-Aqsa Brigades have new units that will be revealed “at the right time.”

In addition, Abu Muhammad said that Yasser Arafat himself had ordered the Second Intifada.

The broadcast then showed a live-fire military exercise by the battalion that included the simulated kidnapping of an Israeli soldier.

The video aired with Hebrew subtitles.

The broadcast aired on Alkofiya TV (Gaza) on January 1, 2019. To read more about Abu Muhammad, the Nidal Al-‘Amoudi Battalion, and the Yasser Arafat Base, see MEMRI Special Dispatch No. 7322.
