Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

  1. ‘Fatal Mistake’: Turkey Slams Trump Over Warning on ‘Economic Devastation’ (sputniknews, jan 14, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201901141071448397-turkey-syria-kurds-us-response/

“Tensions between Ankara and Washington have further escalated over the Kurdish issue as Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced last week that Ankara would launch a military operation east of the Euphrates River if the US failed to withdraw its troops from the Arab Republic in time.

Ibrahim Kalin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesperson has taken to Twitter to respond to a recent comment by the US president, who warned Ankara of “economic devastation” should it target US-backed Kurdish forces in Syria.

    Ibrahim Kalin
    ?
    @ikalin1
Mr @realDonaldTrump Terrorists can’t be your partners & allies. Turkey expects the US to honor our strategic partnership and doesn’t want it to be shadowed by terrorist propaganda.
There is no difference between DAESH, PKK, PYD and YPG. We will continue to fight against them all.

The Turkish official’s remark follows President Trump’s statement on Twitter in which he threatened to “devastate Turkey economically” if Ankara hits Kurdish forces in Syria.

He noted, however, that Washington doesn’t want the Kurds to provoke Turkey as well.

The US support for Kurdish militants, who have been fighting Daesh* in Syria, has been a major sticking point in relations between the two NATO allies. Turkey considers the YPG to be affiliated with the PKK, which is banned by Ankara as a terrorist organisation.
The issue has intensified since Trump declared victory over Daesh, claiming that he would withdraw some 2,000 US troops from Syria. When addressing the matter, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that the US would ensure that the Turkish military does not massacre the Kurdish militants.

Additionally, the Syrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Damascus has intensified negotiations with the Kurds amid threats of a Turkish operation.”

  2. Boeing-707 Reportedly Crashes Near Tehran (PHOTO, VIDEO) (sputniknews, Jan 14, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201901141071448654-tehran-iran-boeing-707-crash/

“The reason for the crash, as well as the number of casualties, has yet to be revealed by local authorities.

A Boeing-707 cargo aircraft crashed on the outskirts of Tehran, the Iranian news agency ILNA reported Monday.

According to media reports, some 10 people were on board the aircraft that was allegedly flying from the city of Bishkek. Local broadcasters have also said that the plane’s pilots may have survived the accident.

The news agency Fars has reported that the pilots lost control of the aircraft during landing, resulting in the plane crashing in a residential area.

According to Fars, the plane, which belongs to Kyrgyzstan was meant to arrive at Payam International Airport in Karaj but accidentally went to Fath Airport.

?The reason for the incident has yet to be clarified by the authorities.

In the meantime, local media reports are also suggesting that the catastrophe was caused by severe weather conditions.”

    • Boeing-707 Reportedly Crashes Near Tehran

Any Boeing 707 still flying is at least about 30 to 60 years of age (in this case 39 yo). Freighter or no, that’s yust a little too long-in-the-fan-blade for this air traveler.

There’s also this persistent, nasty rumor that the Koran doesn’t make such a sh!t hot airframe mechanic’s handbook.

Iranian cargo plane tries to land at wrong airport; 15 dead
The aircraft was reportedly carrying meat from Kyrgyzstan to Iran.

From the looks of the previous article, maybe the Koran’s not such a useful ILS field guide or ICOA coordinate catalog either. Not that this matters much because the airliner, along with its entire cargo and crew, is so much dead meat.

PS: Rest assured that long-ago the maintenance budget for this superannuated bird was diverted over to nuclear weapons R&D. Iran’s corrupt nuke-obsessed mullahs killed these fifteen people as surely as if they had tampered with the plane’s gyros themselves.

  3. Iran sends SHUDDER through US by launching ‘BALLISTIC MISSILE technology’ into space (express, Jan 14, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1071706/world-war-three-Iran-space-launch-US-sanctions-intercontinental-nuclear-ballistic-missiles

“IRAN has sent a shock wave through Washington DC after it defiantly vowed to proceed with the launch of a satellite which officials fear will incorporate ballistic missile technology that is capable of reaching the US mainland.

The Islamic Republic will send the satellites into orbit using a Simorgh space launch vehicle from the Imam Khomeini Space Centre. The US fears Iran could potentially use this satellite system to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles. Tehran has denied any such motive but US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has insisted Iran stop its satellite launches.

He has claimed they “incorporate technology that is virtually identical to that used in ballistic missiles”, inferring the launches would be a violation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution which prohibits Iran from testing nuclear-capable weapons.

Mr Pompeo said: ”The United States will not stand by and watch the Iranian regime’s destructive policies place international stability and security at risk.”

He added: ”We advise the regime to reconsider these provocative launches and cease all activities related to ballistic missiles in order to avoid deeper economic and diplomatic isolation.”

Iran has responded to US threats with a massive aerial drill of it’s US made F-14 Eagle and F-4 Phantom fighter jets.

Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh said the manoeuvres were a success and carried an important message for those at home and abroad.

According to Tasnim News Agency, General Nasirzadeh said: ”Our message to the Iranian nation is that we are ready to respond to any threat.”

Iran’s ambitions to enhance its own military strength with the development of new technologies and their cultivation of Shiite Muslim movements throughout the Middle East has antagonised the US who have reimposed strict sanctions despite pleas from European allies.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told attendees at a ceremony on January 10 he was “proud of our defensive and scientific missiles” and “we are sending two satellites to space soon”.

As Mike Pompeo embarks upon a “counter-Iran revolution” tour of the Middle East, he said launching the satellites would violate the UN Security Council resolution on the 2015 nuclear deal, which “calls upon” Iran to not test ballistic missiles.

Iran has pointed out that the International Atomic Energy Agency monitoring compliance has consistently found Iran has been meeting its commitments.

In February 2018, Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, called for greater efforts to ensure Iran was able to defend its ballistic missile ambitions.

He said: “Without a moment of hesitation, the country must move to acquire whatever is necessary for defence, even if the whole world is opposed to it.”

The Iranians have insisted their satellites are for telecommunications and the new satellite images released indicate they do not plan to heed Pompeo’s warning.”

  4. UN alarmed by alleged police killings in Indian state (aa, jan 14, 2019)
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/asia-pacific/un-alarmed-by-alleged-police-killings-in-indian-state/1362955

“The UN human rights body’s experts expressed “alarm” over alleged 59 extra-judicial killings by police in northern Indian state, where many victims belong to Muslim community.

The UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR) said in a statement on Friday that its experts have written a letter to the government of India on 15 of the cases in Uttar Pradesh since March 2017.

“We are extremely concerned about the pattern of events: individuals allegedly being abducted or arrested before their killing, and their bodies bearing injuries indicative of torture,” the UN experts said in the statement.

In 2017, according to the Wire, an Indian media outlet, at least 420 encounters were conducted that left 15 people dead in the six months of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government.

By 2018, the police had conducted 1,038 encounters in which 32 were killed, the media outlet added.

The Indian Supreme Court is slated to hear several of such fake encounter cases on Monday.

The OHCHR noted that they have also received reports that family members of victims and human rights defenders working on the cases have been harassed from police and had false criminal cases brought against them.

“Family members of victims and human rights defenders must also be protected from reprisals, and threats and harassment against them investigated,” it said.

Calling for an “urgent review” of the use of force by the state police, the OHCHR said they are yet to receive a response to their letter from the Indian government.

The UN experts also said the local police did not follow its Supreme Court’s guidelines on investigations.

“We have also received allegations of corruption including the police demanding money to release the victim prior to the killing,” the experts said in the statement.”

  5. US, Afghan forces raid Taliban prison in NW Afghanistan (aa, jan 14, 2019)
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/asia-pacific/us-afghan-forces-raid-taliban-prison-in-nw-afghanistan/1363849

“Afghan Taliban on Sunday claimed U.S. and Afghan forces raided their detention center in northwestern Afghanistan and released 40 Daesh terrorists.

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the raid was carried out in the Panj Buz area of Jwand district in the province of Badges.

“The joint forces killed our two guards deployed in prison security and took away 40 Daesh detainees from there, which [makes it] seem that the American and the Kabul administration carried out the raid to rescue Daesh prisoners,” Mujahid said.

He added that Daesh was being uprooted by the Afghan Taliban in northern Afghanistan’s Darzab district of northern Jowzjan province and were on the brink of complete annihilation when the U.S. and Afghan forces jointly rescued over 200 Daesh militants last year…”

  6. The Forgotten Old People Of Venezuela

The most recent survey of 6,168 citizens revealed that 79.8 percent of adult Venezuelans are now eating less than they were three months earlier. Seventy percent of them said the reason was that they didn’t have enough money to buy food.

“We are not prepared at all to age here,” says Luis Francisco Cabezas, head of Convite, a human rights group that seeks to aid vulnerable citizens.

Indeed, Venezuela is the worst nation in South America to age in, according to the latest Global AgeWatch Index, and ranks 76th in a survey of 96 nations.

  7. US clothing company drops Chinese supplier over Xinjiang labor camp fears

NR: Yet another potential domino effect threatens to send more destructive shock waves rippling through Communist China’s moth-eaten economic fabric.

This week, Badger Sportswear, a North Carolina-based retailer, said it would “no longer source any product” from Xinjiang-based supplier Hetian Taida. While Badger said Hetian Taida’s current operations were “consistent with our Global Sourcing Policy” it added historical documentation was insufficient and so it was severing the relationship based on an “abundance of caution.”

Additionally, the US company said it would no longer source products from “this region of China.”

That last sentence tells the whole story. As this meme of moral liability catches on, the Left will throw under the bus boycott, divest, and sanction their Commie confrères the moment such avant-garde virtue signalling becomes too unbearably fashionable.

There is no small irony in the way Left-wingers take umbrage at Beijing horse whipping its Muslims. Islamic goons that would likely enjoy nothing more than decapitating some uppity, gay, uncovered pro-Feminist Infidels for an afternoon’s entertainment. After some vigorous raping, of course.

Too bad the Clinton administration didn’t demonstrate a similar “abundance of caution” when sponsoring Red China for the WTO. Johnny Chung funneling almost $100K from Communist China’s military into the 1996 Democratic campaign was just too good to pass up (no matter how many millions of American jobs were vaporized). Transferring “satellite launch” missile guidance technology that vastly improved their ICBM targeting was Slick Willie’s complimentary reach-around for that thoughtful donation.

    • When selective enforcement meets double standards (yes, there is a difference), you had best expect some serious sturm und drang.

This case spoons out a dollop of particularly grim amusement. The sort that only comes from watching an All-American “mom and apple pie” family gal discovering how imitation little girls—and the pathologically lax, criminally negligent gamete emitters who spawned this ambulatory young fluid gender tragi-comedy—have, nevertheless, managed to commandeer the victim status once reserved almost exclusively for women (plus a scant few protected minorities).

Susan B. Anthony’s bewildered inheritors now watch in astonishment as, almost overnight, a Postmodern freak show snatches from the sisterhood’s grasp political reins that took nearly a century of hard-won battles to acquire.

After personally tolerating decades of endless whinging by way too many dykes about “Male Privilege” (e.g., dying in wars, going bald, shorter life expectancy, performance anxiety, breadwinner status) and the “Rape Culture” of their Sapphic, misandrous fantasies, seeing the Feminist applecart upended by a prinking eleven year-old nancy boy cannot but spark a modicum of schadenfreude.

  8. Nepal: Woman, sons suffocate to death in banned ‘menstrual hut’

NR: This might seem obscure but exposure to “indoor pollution” is KILLING women and children in disproportionate numbers. Household air pollution in general is responsible for more early deaths (almost half of the seven million annual fatalities) than AIDS and malaria combined. These “menstrual huts” are just another manifestation of the same throwback mentality that mires so many cultures in superstition and poverty.

Indoor pollution more strongly affects women because of time spent daily in close proximity to wood and charcoal cooking fires or primitive stoves. Small children are similarly affected because they’re typically kept nearby to be watched over and fed. Pneumonia, lung cancer, and other respiratory ailments predominate as causes of premature mortality in this group.

None of which addresses the tremendous environmental damage being caused by over-harvesting of trees for firewood. Gathering such fuel may require hours of walking to reach available sources that do not jeopardize the soil stability of village agriculture. Fetching the day’s water can consume many hours as well. These burdens traditionally fall upon women. The same women whose wind capacity and pulmonary tone have been damaged by indoor pollution.

Erosion caused by such timber cutting has seen entire rice terraces avalanche downhill. This usually happens after seasonal rains inundate these unreinforced structures of compacted dirt and poorly mortared stone. It is, with whatever resulting shortfalls in local food production, yet one more way that dependence upon antiquated technology is slowly becoming an existential threat. As is almost always the case, late adopters learn this lesson the hardest.

  9. Germany’s police are now infiltrated by criminals of Turkish and Arab origin: Arab-born commissioner candidate from Gelsenkirchen arrested during raid+++
Meet the upcoming German Bakshish Police:
During the raid against Arab clan criminality in the Ruhr area, a North Rhine-Westphalian policeman with allegedly foreign roots was apparently arrested this weekend. During the checks in Essen on Sunday morning, officers had stopped a car with four men, who apparently had Arab descent, according to the newspaper “Westfalen-Blatt”. When they were to be checked, one of the men is said to have doubted the legality of the police operation. According to the newspaper, he claimed to be a policeman himself. When he was supposed to be searched, he is said to have resisted massively and tried to tear himself away. Several police officers allegedly broke his resistance by force, the newspaper writes, and the man was arrested. According to information in the “Westfalen-Blatt” from police circles, the investigation revealed that the man was a 19-year-old candidate commissar of the police headquarters in Gelsenkirchen. The North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of the Interior was also informed.

  10. Ottawa bus crash. Driver a product of affirmative action, gender quotas? Religion quotas? Not a shred of meritocracy here (previous accidents, retraining… on the job less than a year) and the union didn’t pull her plug even though her lack of skill was clearly a threat to passengers. • From the sounds of it the only way police could question her was by arresting her because she was uncooperative. Was her first allegiance to the city, the union, or someone higher up? If she is not found criminally responsible then there is no reason she shouldn’t be driving again, correct? How will passengers feel with this woman at the wheel, knowing her history?

  11. Hate groups are about to find lawmakers eager to scrutinize them

For years, Republicans have watched white supremacists claim the GOP is on their side. And on Capitol Hill, Republican lawmakers did little to clamp down on race-based hate groups.

But as of last week, Democrats are in charge of the House.

And that means Rep. Bennie Thompson, an African American lawmaker from Mississippi, is in charge of the House Homeland Security Committee.

    He plans to act.

  12. China’s first ‘cyber-dissident’ faces trial

China’s first “cyber-dissident”, whose website reported on sensitive topics including human rights, is expected to go on trial on Monday amid fears he is in bad health, sources familiar with the matter told AFP.

Huang Qi was arrested in 2016 for “leaking state secrets” and has since been held at the Mianyang Detention Centre in southwestern Sichuan province — his home region — without a trial date.

Calls to the Mianyang Mianyang Intermediate People’s Court, which is handling the case, went unanswered.

“American diplomats attempted to attend Huang Qi’s trial but were denied access to the courtroom,” a US embassy spokesperson told AFP.

Several activists who said they were travelling to Mianyang to attend the trial sent photos and videos to AFP showing police stopping them en route Monday morning.

Huang ran a website called “64 Tianwang” — named after the bloody June 4, 1989 crackdown on Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protesters.

The site, which has reported on local corruption, human rights violations, and other topics rarely seen in ordinary Chinese media, is blocked on the mainland.

A volunteer at “64 Tianwang” told AFP that he was taken away “on holiday” Saturday by Sichuan police, who cited the cyber-dissident’s trial that was due to start this week.

BANGKOK (AP) — Unusually high levels of smog worsened by weather patterns are raising alarm across Asia, with authorities in Thailand’s hazy capital Bangkok handing out face masks and preparing to seed clouds for rain to clear the air.

A combination of construction dust, auto exhaust and other pollutants, lingering over Bangkok due to prevailing weather patterns, has taken air quality to unhealthy levels in recent days.

“I admit these are temporary solutions but we have to do it. Other long term measures will also be implemented, Police Gen. Aswin Kwanmuang told a meeting of army, police, pollution control and other officials on Monday.

  14. ‘Father of DNA’ James Watson Stripped of Honors Over More Ugly Racism Comments

    14 JAN 2019

The acclaimed Nobel Prize-winning scientist James Watson will be forever remembered as one of the ‘fathers of DNA’. But also as something much worse.

In a resurfaced controversy that further dims the shine of one of the 20th century’s most esteemed scientists, Watson – awarded the Nobel in 1962 for his role in the discovery of DNA’s ‘double helix’ molecular structure – has been stripped of academic titles after repeating offensive racist views that began to shred his reputation over a decade ago.

Research such as the Human Genome Project has now “mapped” genes linked to a host of human traits including eye colour, athletic ability, IQ, and aggression.

It even carries weight in court — convicted murderer Abdelmalek Bayout had his sentence reduced when it emerged he had genes linked to violent behaviour.

Bioethicists have warned the technology to alter DNA could be abused for purposes of eugenics — making new “superhumans” in a chilling similarity to fascist ideals of the 20th century.

  17. BREAKING: Polish Mayor Stabbed at Charity Event

The knife screams “Islam” but only his hairdresser knows for sure.

    • UPDATE: Mayor of Gdansk, Poland, dies after being stabbed on stage
The suspected assailant reportedly shouted that he was imprisoned under a previous national government led by a party to which the mayor formerly belonged.

NR: Incident may not have Islamic ties.

Polish blood donors came out in droves in a bid to save his life, but Poland’s health minister said Adamowicz, 53, died of his wounds on Monday.

      Poland isn’t beyond hope yet.

The assailant shouted from the stage that he had been wrongly imprisoned under a previous government led by Civic Platform, a party to which the mayor formerly belonged. He said that his name was Stefan and that “I was jailed but innocent. … Civic Platform tortured me. That’s why Adamowicz just died.”

This, being Polish reporting, may even pass the smell test.

As mayor, he has been a progressive voice, supporting LGBT rights and tolerance for minorities. He marched in last year’s gay pride parade, a rare action for a mayor in Poland.

      Lotta good that did him.

  18. German newspaper says employee attacked by far-right group

BERLIN (AP) — A German newspaper says one of its employees has been attacked by members of a far-right group.

The left-wing taz daily said the woman was grabbed by the neck after confronting six black-clad people who were piling cobblestones and attempting to put up posters in front of the newspaper’s Berlin offices.

Berlin police confirmed that a woman was attacked during the incident. Spokesman Heidi Vogt said police were still investigating who was behind the incident, but the far-right group Identitarian Movement tweeted photos of members putting up posters in front of the building.

German media reported that the group also targeted other media buildings and left-wing politicians’ offices.

The Identitarian Movement is close to the far-right Alternative for Germany party, whose lawmaker Frank Magnitz was attacked last week.

There has been a major blow to the Trump administration in its fight for religious freedom. On Sunday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the White House’s rules, which allowed more employers to opt out of providing free birth control to their employees for religious or moral reasons.

It was one of the president’s campaign promises, and a goal his administration has focused on since taking office.

“The president believes one’s right to practice one’s faith is a fundamental right in this country,” stated Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

ISTANBUL/RIYADH (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Turkey with economic devastation if it attacks a U.S.-allied Kurdish militia in Syria, drawing a sharp rebuke from Ankara on Monday and reviving fears of another downturn in ties between the NATO allies.

Relations between the United States and Turkey have long been strained by Washington’s support for the Kurdish YPG, which Turkey views as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that is waging a decades-long insurgency in Turkey.

  22. Trump’s shutdown differs greatly from Obama’s: Here are a few ways how
By Daily Caller News Foundation January 14, 2019

Services typically suspended during government shutdowns have continued to operate under the Trump administration, with insiders pointing to acting Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought as the reason why.

Agencies impacted by government shutdowns are forced to severely cut back on operations, suspend services, and often send workers home without pay. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has been using creative solutions to blunt the burden, according to a senior administration official and several prominent Republicans.

Vought joined the OMB in early 2018 and assumed the role of acting director Jan. 3 after Director Mick Mulvaney became President Donald Trump’s acting chief of staff.

  23. We know that a border wall would work because Democrats fear it
By Benny Huang January 14, 2019

In another episode of stupid “gothcha” journalism, the Washington Post recently reported that — despite what President Trump may have tweeted — Barack Obama does not have a ten-foot wall around his swanky D.C. home. In one of the most pointless stories to appear lately in an increasingly pointless newspaper, the Post described Chez Obama’s security features while citing anonymous neighbors who said that there was no wall.

It seems that the Post can’t even write a story about the Obama’s home security without resorting to unreliable characters who mope around in parking garages — if they exist at all.

In an attempt to fact check the fact-checkers, the Daily Caller’s Benny Johnson dropped by the Obamas’ to find out the ground truth. What did he see?

Obama does not have one wall. He has many. He has barricades. He has armed guards entirely blocking the suburban road where he lives. 24. What’s the real deal with Steele? An actual ‘bombshell’ from Lisa Page’s 2018 House testimony
    By J.E. Dyer January 14, 2019

Last week saw three significant new stories about the Russiagate melodrama. One of them, written about here, involved a bizarre claim that FBI officials, alarmed at former Director James Comey’s firing in May 2017 and apparently unable to ask their superiors basic common-sense questions about it, launched a counterintelligence probe of the president to figure out why he did it.

Another story is one I will address separately. It relates to old allegations about Andrew Weissmann, currently Robert Mueller’s deputy on the special counsel team.

The third is the subject of this article. Jeff Carlson, of the blog The Markets Work, was recently afforded the opportunity to review former FBI attorney Lisa Page’s closed-door testimony in the House of Representatives in July 2018, and provided a lengthy summary of it at The Epoch Times on 11 January.

There’s a lot to unpack from the Page testimony, and I commend Carlson’s article to you as must-reading. It indicates, for one thing, that in August 2016, former CIA Director John Brennan had knowledge of the contents of the Steele dossier, apparently without any coordination that Ms. Page was aware of with the FBI – whose agent (presumably Michael Gaeta) was handling Steele as a source.

    • EXCLUSIVE: Transcripts of Lisa Page’s Closed-Door Testimonies Provide New Revelations in Spygate Scandal

Transcripts of two closed-door testimonies by Lisa Page, the former assistant general counsel at the FBI, have provided new insights into the actions of the FBI, Department of Justice (DOJ), and others—including CIA Director John Brennan—regarding their investigation of Donald Trump.

Included in the transcripts provided to us is information suggesting Brennan was aware of the so-called Steele dossier in early August 2016, and that he included information regarding the dossier in a briefing given to then-Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

  25. ‘Very Negative Development’: Saudi Prince Slams US Troop Withdrawal From Syria (sputniknews, jan 14, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201901141071462932-saudi-prince-us-withdrawal-syria-negative/

“In an interview with the BBC, Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal said that the withdrawal of US troops from the Syrian Arab Republic would lead to the deterioration of the situation in the Mideast country.

“The US actions from my perspective is [sic] that it is going to further complicate the issue, rather [than] find any solutions to it, and further entrench not only the Iranians, but also the Russians and Bashar al-Assad. So from that perspective, of course, it is a very negative development”.

Prince Faisal further added that the resignation of US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, supposedly triggered by President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out the troops, was unlikely to help the situation.

“Obviously, he disagreed with the administration on Syria policy, so in that context his remaining would have been a more positive sign of commitment to that policy”….”

  26. World War 3: Iranian TV shows missiles striking popular TOURIST LANDMARKS after US threat (express, Jan 14, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1071970/World-War-3-Iran-TV-tourist-landmarks-missile-US-Tehran

“SHOCKING footage broadcast on Iranian State TV has shown the country’s missiles striking tourist targets across the world in a terrifying warning to Western forces.

Iranian State TV has aired a shocking animation to prove that the country’s military missiles can obliterate key global landmarks. The terrifying television report, broadcast on Iran’s Channel 1, was intended to showcase the Iranian missile capabilities. European capitals were among the targets pictured, as well as the Taj Mahal, the pyramids, and the Kremlin.

In the animated video, the missile can be seen flying around the globe while a narrator describes the weapon’s capabilities.

The Iranian narration says: “In 2015, Iran tested for the first time its long-range ballistic missile, which can be controlled and guided until it hits the target.

“The Emad Missile has a range of 2,500 km and can easily hit targets in Russia, Eastern Europe, western China, north-eastern Africa and large parts of India.”

The haunting video was the first broadcast on December 22nd last year but has only just been translated to Western audiences.

This comes as secret reports revealed that the White House demanded military draft plans for strikes on Iran.

The war order from US National Security Adviser John Bolton sparked huge concern at the Pentagon and State Department, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The military move was in response to a mortar attack launched by an Iran-linked group on the Iraqi diplomatic quarters home to the US embassy in September.

Despite accusations, Iran rejected all claims that they were responsible for the attack.

The White House National Security Council (NSC) sought to develop a forceful American response to the low-scale attack, including options for a strike against the Islamic republic.

In one meeting, then-deputy national security advisor Mira Ricardel called the attacks in Iraq an “act of war” and called for a decisive response.

The shock report also revealed that the NSC requested options for strikes in Iraq and Syria.

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhayu confirmed that the Israeli Air Force had struck Iranian targets in Syria.

Mr Netanyahu said: “The accumulation of recent attacks proves that we are determined more than ever take action against Iran in Syria, and we will strike harder in Syria if needed.””

  27. 40 arrested and two killed by torture in fresh anti-gay crackdown in Chechnya, activists claim (telegraph, jan 14, 2019)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/01/14/40-gay-russians-arrested-two-killed-torture-chechnya-fresh-crackdown/

“Forty men and women have been detained and at least two have died in an anti-gay purge in Russia’s Chechnya republic that is even more brutal than a 2017 crackdown, according to activists.

After the administrator of an LGBT social media group was detained in December, Chechen law enforcement began rounding up suspected homosexuals, LGBT Network said on Monday. It is holding people without charge in an infamous prison where gay men have previously said they were tortured, local residents told activists.

One of the captives died after officials repeatedly cut him with a knife during an interrogation, Igor Kochetkov of LGBT Network told The Telegraph.

“We can already say that the torture being suffered by those detained is savage, much worse than for those detained in 2017,” he said. “We know of two dead, but probably more have been killed.”

For the first time, women are also being systematically detained for presumed homosexuality, he added.

A gay man named Alexander who escaped Chechnya for France told the Russian news site Meduza that 10 people had actually been killed in the latest wave of the anti-LGBT “genocide,” and a friend who was imprisoned had seen bodies being carried away.

A post in a local LGBT social media group last week told gay people to “run from the republic as soon as possible”.

More than 100 were rounded up and at least six died in a crackdown on gay men in the predominantly Muslim republic in 2017. Some were handed over to relatives with the expectation they would be finished off in an “honour killing,” while others had to sign blank criminal charges for possible future use.

LGBT Network has helped 150 people flee since 2017…”

  28. Khan’s London: Gang Members Sentenced for Shooting and Knifing ‘Innocent Bystander’ to Death (breitbart, Jan 14, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/01/14/khans-london-gang-members-sentenced-gun-knife-murder/

“Two men have been sentenced for killing an “innocent bystander” by shooting him and stabbing him 12 times in Enfield, London.

Bilkan Bilkaner, 20, and Duke Quainoo, 21, both of Enfield, were found guilty of murder, GBH with intent, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life for the March 16th slaying of 23-year-old Russell Jordan Jones, an official police statement reports.

“On a freezing cold night last March, Bilkaner and Quainoo armed themselves with a sawn off shotgun and knives before setting out in search of opposing gang members,” recalled Detective Inspector Simon Stancombe, from the Metropolitan Police Force’s Homicide and Major Crime Command.

“Tragically, the group they chose were not in a gang, they were simply a group of young men chatting outside a shop. These two thugs shot Russell before stabbing him 12 times as he lay defenceless on the ground. They also thrust a knife into the back of one of Russell’s friends as he tried to get away.

“The wickedness and ferocity of the attack, which was captured on CCTV, has shocked even the most seasoned of homicide detectives,” he added…”

  29. CBC – Who benefits from rescuing Rahaf? Questions linger after whirlwind story of Saudi teen’s asylum

Asked why al-Qunun’s claim was processed so quickly, Global Affairs Canada was tight-lipped

    Shanifa Nasser · CBC News

It was a whirlwind affair that began with a Saudi teen barricaded in a Thai hotel room bravely defying the laws of her country and against long odds, refusing to return to her allegedly abusive family.

Just days later, Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun was on Canadian soil flanked by smiling officials and local service providers amid the flash of cameras — a swift resolution to a story that could have had a very different ending.

“I believe in lighting a single candle, and where we can save a single person, where we can save a single woman, that is a good thing to do,” Canada’s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, the memory of recent mudslinging with Saudi Arabia over detained women’s rights advocate Samar Badawi hanging in the air.

Now, as al-Qunun begins a new life in a new country, questions are being raised about the reasons for Canada’s speedy decision to grant her asylum, the message it sends and its implications for the future of the country’s already-frosty relationship with Saudi Arabia, where an estimated 17,000 Canadians currently live.

    An ‘impossible’ situation

“Canada and Saudi Arabia are in a political battle currently, so because this woman is Saudi, my sense is that there was some political motive in promoting the ‘rescuing’ of a Saudi girl,” said Ryerson University professor Mehrunnisa Ali.

“Of course, the rescuing of oppressed people is a Western narrative in many different ways but the securing of a Saudi woman being oppressed by her family and her country sharpens this narrative in ways that may not have been possible otherwise.”

The exact details of the 18-year-old’s plight aren’t known. After her arrival in Canada, al-Qunun was whisked to an undisclosed location out of concerns about what her dissent from the kingdom might mean for her safety.

Speaking to the New York Times before being granted asylum, al-Qunun described life in Saudi Arabia as “a prison.” The country’s highly restrictive guardianship laws require women to be granted permission from a male relative to work, travel, marry and receive certain kinds of medical treatment. It was a life of constant abuse, she told the paper — once she said she was locked in a room for six months over a hair cut to which her family took objection.

“They can’t even leave the home without the permission of their guardian,” B.C.-based activist Yasmine Mohammed who identifies as an ex-Muslim told CBC News. “Many times, it’s the guardian himself that’s abusing her, so it puts women in an absolutely impossible situation.”

International rights monitors consistently rank Saudi Arabia among the world’s worst nations for women’s rights and gender equality. In its annual report on gender equality in 2018, the World Economic Forum ranked it 141 out of 149 countries.

Thai immigration police Chief Surachate Hakparn told The Associated Press al-Qunun’s father denies physically abusing her or trying to force her into an arranged marriage, which were among the reasons she gave for wanting asylum.

    • An ‘exceptional’ case
So why was it that al- Qunun’s case was processed so speedily?

Lauren La Rose, a spokesperson for the UN’s refugee agency, told CBC News al-Qunun’s case was an “exceptional” situation, a designation determined by the UN on a case-by-case basis. Examples of high priority cases include those where someone is very ill or violence against women or girls.

“While it may be new information for the public, it is something that UNHCR does in terms of facilitating fast-track resettlements in situations when individuals may be facing immediate life-threatening situations or at risk of being threatened in their home country,” according to an international principle known as non-refoulement.

Out of an estimated 25.4 million refugees worldwide, less than one per cent are resettled because the need simply outweighs the number of spaces available globally, said UNHCR senior resettlement officer Michael Casasola.

But at least one former diplomat said Canada’s privileging of al-Qunun’s case could set a “dangerous precedent.”

“The Australians were prepared, as I understand it, to accept her as a refugee claimant. What we did is go one step further and accept her not as a claimant but as a refugee. And that’s a process that in Canada typically requires an assessment of the claim, a vetting of the individual and a decision that typically can take as much as two years,” said David Chatterson, Canada’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 2009-2011.

“What happens the next time a teenage girl or adult woman from Saudi Arabia flees her family and declares herself to no longer be a Muslim, does that mean automatic sanctuary?” In Saudi Arabia, leaving Islam is treated as a crime punishable by death.

Asked on Sunday about how and why al-Qunun’s claim was processed so quickly, Global Affairs Canada was tight-lipped.

“When the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) made a request of us that we grant Ms. Rahaf al-Qunun asylum, we accepted. Out of concern for her safety, we ask that her privacy be respected,” said spokesperson Stefano Maron.

      ‘A prop for our disputes’

For some, including senior research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue Amarnath Amarasingam, it’s concerning how al-Qunun’s case is being celebrated by figures that often push an anti-Islam or anti-immigration message.

“Many on the far-right love ex-Muslims, and many ex-Muslims on the far-right often present themselves as so-called native informants presenting to the mainstream the real ‘truth’ about Muslims,” he said.

“It’s perhaps not surprising that many of these individuals on the far-right encouraged Canada to accept Rahaf after it was rumoured that she had abandoned Islam. To be clear, I’m very happy that Canada let her in but … I’m going to go out on a limb and say there are some ulterior motives there.”

Dennis Horak, who served as Canada’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia until he was expelled from the country last year, said the next few days could make a big impact on diplomatic relations between Canada and the kingdom.

“I would hate to see us use this to keep trotting her out and have meetings with the Prime Minister … various photo-ops things like that [and] that become the mallet with which we bash Saudi Arabia,” he said.

“Does she become a prop for our disputes and our concerns with Saudi Arabia? I don’t think that’s fair to her and I don’t think it’s valuable in trying to rebuild our relationship.”

Meanwhile Ali, who was herself involved in sponsoring two Syrian refugee families — of which one case took almost two years to process — remains concerned with the message she said this high-profile case sends, including that winning public attention could make a claim more likely to proceed than another.

“That’s the biggest risk of power being exercised in a way the prioritizes some refugees versus others,” she said.

“The message that we may be giving is that rather than go through the system, reach a powerful person.”

    • CBC – Saudi teen runaway begins new life in Canada

Rahaf al-Qunun, the Saudi teenager who was granted asylum in Canada after running away from her allegedly abusive family, arrived in Toronto on Saturday. After a photo-op with Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, al-Qunun has kept a low profile while the government watches for possible political fallout.

    • Phyllis Chesler: Rahaf’s Saudi family will never, ever stop coming after her

The Saudi teen remains in real and terrible danger because she has renounced Islam. She has shut down her Twitter account due to death threats.

Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, a Saudi teenager, has just tried to save her own life—and in so doing, has risked death for shaming her family and her country.

Rahaf fled her family vacation in Kuwait, took a plane to Bangkok, barricaded herself in her hotel room at the airport and began posting about her plight on social media. She demanded political asylum.

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. In this case, the ammunition is digital and governmental.

Via her smartphone, Rahaf claimed that she had renounced Islam and that her family would surely kill her if she was returned to them. Rahaf obtained 90,000 followers on Twitter. The media began to cover her plight.

The Thai government had been about to deport her back to the family which Rahaf claimed had beaten and imprisoned her for up to six months at a time for minor, alleged offenses. And then, it changed its mind and allowed Rahaf to meet with an official from the UN’s refugee agency (U.N.H.C.R.).

Rahaf wanted asylum in either Australia or Canada and both countries considered her request even as she was being vetted for “refugee” status.

But make no mistake. She remains in real and terrible danger. She has shut down her Twitter account due to death threats. Her family will never, ever stop coming after her.

She is a disobedient woman and as such deserves constant humiliation, beatings, broken bones, solitary confinement, and, if she is lucky, a forced marriage to a man the age of her grandfather, who already has three wives and twenty children. She is also an apostate. This is a capital crime.

By now, her father and brother are probably already in Thailand. They are both her “guardians” or “minders” and she has absolutely no western-style “agency” over this matter. They are claiming that she needs “medical attention.”

I have conducted four studies about honor killing globally. I am now working on a fifth study which seeks to identify the variables associated with successfully escaping from being honor killed. Rahaf exemplifies a pattern.

For reasons as yet unknown, Rahaf has decided that her life is worth preserving and that she no longer has to absorb the normalized brutalization and subordination that Saudi women are fated to endure. In addition, she has cannily used the power of social media to attract attention to her plight. Further, she has been able to liaison with government, international, or law enforcement authorities who believe she is in danger—or who know that if they return her and she is “disappeared” or murdered that they would be viewed as accomplices by a watchful world.

In this instance, the internet has played a crucial role in her potential salvation.

So many other Saudi women and dissidents were not as lucky. According to Ali Alyami, the founder of the D.C. based Center for Democracy and Human Rights in Saudi Arabia (CDHR), other Saudis have tried to save their own lives but have not been successful. He notes Hamza Kashgari (2012) and Dina Ali Lasloom, (2017) both of whom tried to escape after being labeled, respectively, a heretic and a disobedient woman. They were both sent back to the Kingdom and have not been heard from ever since. Alyami also notes how many men and women are literally rotting in prison in Saudi Arabia as dissidents and feminists.

I remember the tragic 1977 case of Saudi princess Mishaal bint Fahd al Saud, who fell in love with a young man of her own choice and was trying to escape from the Kingdom. Her fiancé (not her lover) was be-headed in a botched execution and she was, mercifully, merely shot to death. Being an al Saud did not spare her. Au contraire.

I remember the forty-seven Saudi women who, in the early 1990s, launched the first Drive-In and who were arrested, fired from their jobs, and placed under house arrest for more than a year.

Today, Eman Al-Nafjian languishes in prison where she is being tortured and sexually assaulted as a campaigner for women’s rights.

The feminist revolutions in the West have caught fire in the East where some of the bravest people on the planet are demanding their freedom and dignity.

I hope the world’s governments heed their cries and grant them political asylum. They are Children of the Enlightenment and it is the midnight hour.

Rahaf has just been granted asylum in Canada! I wonder how much it will cost them to provide security for her for the rest of her life?

  30. France pledges 1B euros in aid to rebuild Iraq (abcnews, Jan 14, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/france-pledges-1b-euros-aid-rebuild-iraq-60364990

“French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian says France is committing 1 billion euros ($1.15 billion) to help Iraq rebuild after its war against the Islamic State group.

Le Drian, meeting with his Iraqi counterpart in Baghdad on Monday, said the aid would go to rebuilding Iraq’s most devastated areas.

Iraq’s Planning Ministry has estimated the cost of reconstruction at $88 billion. Iraq was able to raise $30 billion at a donor conference in Kuwait last year.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamed Alhakim thanked France for its assistance to Iraq’s minority Yezidi community. Islamic State militants enslaved and killed thousands of Yezidis during their brief reign in north Iraq earlier this decade.

France is a member of the international coalition that territorially defeated the group in Iraq and Syria.”

  31. Spain stops aid group’s rescue ship from setting sail (abcnews, jan 14, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/spain-stops-ngo-migrant-rescue-boat-setting-sail-60359614

“A Spanish humanitarian group dedicated to saving migrants at sea said Monday that one of its rescue ships was denied permission to set sail from the port of Barcelona.

An order from Spanish authorities to aid group Proactiva Open Arms said the boat had violated maritime regulations on past rescue missions.

The order, which was seen by The Associated Press, said the vessel violated “the obligation to leave those rescued at sea at the nearest port” on the boat’s most recent mission in December, when some 300 migrants saved near Libya were taken to Spain.

The office of Spain’s merchant marine issued a statement saying Proactiva’s ship “has had to cross the Mediterranean for several days to bring its migrants to land, putting in jeopardy the security of the boat, its crew and the people rescued on board.”

The aid group has appealed the decision, arguing that the rescue vessel only came to Spain after both Malta and Italy had turned it away.

Proactiva Open Arms President Oscar Camps told the AP “the boat has all its inspections, licenses and papers in order and was ready to sail” on another mission to waters near Libya when Spanish authorities refused to let the crew depart Barcelona.

“It is just as detrimental for Italy to close its ports to us as for Spain to stop our boat from sailing for an unfounded administrative cause,” Camps said. “Stopping our boat for a long time means more deaths in the Mediterranean.”

Proactiva Open Arms said the ship has rescued 5,619 people in the Mediterranean Sea since July 2017.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made the plight of migrants one of his banner causes when he took office in June. His government has allowed several boats involved in migrant rescues to dock after they were rejected by Italy and other countries taking a hard line against immigration.

Spain has become the busiest entry point for migrants entering Europe illegally. The European Union’s border agency said about 57,000 unauthorized crossings to Spain were detected last year, double the figure for 2017, while the numbers for Europe overall they reached a five-year low.

Around 2,300 people died trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe last year, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Sanchez has not announced a change in Spain’s immigration policy. His Socialists had a disappointing election result in southern Spain last month, when a party from the extreme right won representation after campaigning against immigration.”

    • “Stopping our boat for a long time means more deaths in the Mediterranean.”

Ummmm … no, you lying shite.

If all of the “boats” were kept in harbor, FEWER invaders would risk the crossing. This would mean LESS “deaths in the Mediterranean”, not more. These NGOs and Quangos only exacerbate the problem by facilitating illegal immigration, and they damn well know it.

“Bosnian prosecutors say a suspect who has fought alongside Islamic extremists in Syria and Iraq has been charged with terrorism.

A statement Monday from the prosecutor’s office identified the man as Munib Ahmetspahic, who was born in 1990 in the Bosnian town of Zenica.

Prosecutors say Ahmetspahic traveled twice to Syria and Iraq between 2013 and 2018 where he joined the Islamic State group and other extremist organizations in those countries.

The statement added that Ahmetspahic has “joined terrorist organizations and taken part in fighting and terrorist activities.”

It said that the man, who had been seriously wounded in Syria, has been charged with “organizing a terrorist group.”

Ahmetspahic was detained in Bosnia last year.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/austrian-police-arrest-19-year-syrian-teens-killing-60359095

“Authorities in Austria say they’ve arrested a 19-year-old Syrian man in connection with the killing of a teenage girl near Vienna.

Markus Bauer, spokesman at the Lower Austria prosecutor’s office, said Monday that the suspect was arrested overnight after police received tips about his whereabouts.

The victim, a 16-year-old Austrian, was found Sunday covered in leaves and branches in a park in Wiener Neustadt, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Vienna.

Bauer said the suspect and the victim knew each other, but he couldn’t confirm reports that they had previously been in a relationship.

Austrian media reported that the victim appeared to have been strangled.”

  35. Toronto Imam is issuing religious marriage certificates for polygamous relationships

A recent investigative report by the Fifth Estate has revealed that a Toronto mosque has been issuing marriage certificates for Muslims in polygamous relationships.

Polygamy is illegal in Canada under section 293 of the Criminal Code, however it is rarely prosecuted by the legal system.

“I’ve decided to have a marriage again, to take a second wife” says the undercover reporter to Imam Aly Hindy.

“We have no problem with the government because this is nikah [a Muslim marriage]. There is no problem,” says the Imam.

“We are not going to register. If you register then it is illegal because you are already married.”

When confronted with the video of his statements, Imam Aly Hindy says that “you can’t prevent” polygamy.

“We have a problem and eventually this society, we’re going to recognize that there’s not enough men for each woman.”

Imam Aly Hindy has courted controversy before. In 2012 Hindy was quoted telling his congregation that homosexuality was “nonsense” and an “invented” phenomenon.

He described homosexuality as “illegal acts” saying that “Illegal means illegal in Islam, not illegal in the Canadian law, because everything is legal in the Canadian law, except children. Other than that, they allow everything.”

He’s also claimed that the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks were conducted by the CIA, he’s refused to sign a letter condemning the 2005 London bombings and has called the Toronto 18 terrorists “good people”.
