“At least 17 irregular migrants have been rescued in the Aegean Sea off Turkey’s southwestern coast, said security sources on Saturday.

The migrants requested help from the Turkish Coast Guard when their rubber boat started taking in water off the Emecik district in the Mugla province, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to media.

Among the migrants were Palestinian and Iraqi nationals.

All of the migrants were referred to provincial migration office.

    https://www.france24.com/en/20181027-two-migrant-children-die-sea-between-morocco-spain-ngo

“Two seven-year-old children have died in the Mediterranean as hundreds of migrants sought to reach Spain from Morocco, a Spanish NGO said Saturday.

Meanwhile 16 Moroccan migrants were reported missing after another boat capsized off the coast of north Morocco.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) 42,500 migrants have arrived by sea in Spain since the start of the year and another 433 have been killed during the journey, often made aboard overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels.

The death toll is already three times higher than the figure for the whole of 2017,

The Spanish sea rescue service said on Twitter that 53 people had been rescued in the waters between Spain and northern Africa as migrant boat took on water.

However “two lifeless bodies” were also recovered.

The Caminando Fronteras NGO, which helps migrants, said that the dead bodies were those of two seven-year-old children.

Increasing numbers of Moroccans and sub-Saharan migrants are seeking to enter Spain, either by sea or by smuggling themselves into the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, which are in Morocco and are the only European territories in Africa.”

  6. Global News EXCLUSIVE: Stats Canada requesting banking information of 500,000 Canadians without their knowledge

Statistics Canada is asking banks across the country for financial transaction data and personal information of 500,000 Canadians without their knowledge, Global News has learned.

Documents obtained by Global News show the national statistical agency plans to collect “individual-level financial transactions data” and sensitive information, like social insurance numbers (SIN), from Canadian financial institutions to develop a “new institutional personal information bank.”

“Statistics Canada will be acquiring individual payments and income history information from financial institutions,” reads a document from Statistics Canada, which recognizes the “highly sensitive nature” of the data.

The personal banking and financial transactions being requested include bill payments, cash withdrawals from ATMs, credit card payments, electronic money transfers and even account balances of Canadians across the country.

James Tebrake, director general of macroeconomics at Statistics Canada, told Global News that beginning in January, the agency will ask nine banks for the financial transaction information from a representative sample of 500,000 randomly chosen Canadians or a 1 in 20 chance of being selected.

“Canadians should know we are not accessing all of the payments data for all Canadians. It’s a small sample relative to the total number of households,” he said. “Our access to this data is permitted through both the Privacy Act and the Statistics Act.”

However, Canada’s biggest banks have not yet fully agreed to the project.
