  1. Berlin police officer allegedly spied on Turkish opposition members — Almost 30 percent of the recruited policemen have foreign roots, most of them of Turkish origin–
A Berlin police officer is suspected of spying for Turkey. This was reported by the newspaper “Tagesspiegel” on Wednesday. According to the newspaper, the man was observed informing the Turkish secret service about Turkish opposition members living in Berlin. On Twitter the police confirmed late Wednesday evening that there were ongoing investigations by the public prosecutor’s office and the State Criminal Police Office “against one of our colleagues”. If the suspicion of “the transmission of sensitive data to the Turkish embassy” were confirmed, the official would have committed a “serious crime”, it continued. “According to “Tagesspiegel”, Interior Senator Andreas Geisel is also aware of the accusations, but out of consideration for the ongoing investigations he did not want to express himself. It would not be the first concrete case of espionage by the Turkish secret service, which was raised in Germany. In the past, members of the Berlin House of Representatives are said to have been spied on. The Turkish embassy has always rejected allegations of espionage and, according to the “Tagesspiegel”, did not want to comment on the current case. Turkish President Erdogan will arrive in Berlin on Thursday. Several thousand policemen will be deployed in the capital to protect Erdogan’s two-day visit and to monitor the protests. So far according to police ten rallies are announced. The largest one will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. according to the motto “Erdogan Not Welcome” at Potsdamer square. The organizer assumes 10,000 participants. More and more women and more and more people from immigrant families are employed by the Berlin police. In the case of the uniformed police, 29 percent of the newly recruited junior policemen had a foreign background, the largest group being men and women of Turkish descent…

A 22-year-old man from Zoetermeer was arrested in The Hague on Wednesday afternoon for threats. Witnesses reported to the police that he was standing at a car with a hissing gas bottle, shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’. His motive is not clear. “All possible scenarios are being investigated”, the police said, Omroep West reports.

The man was arrested on Telexstraat next to the HTM building at around 2:00 p.m. by members of a special police unit. A helicopter was deployed to the scene, and police officers were stationed on a nearby roof with guns pointed at the man.

The suspect was talked out of his car and arrested. The police found a gas bottle in the car after the arrest. Explosive experts examined the car, and concluded that it was safe.

  4. Cold Front: Dutch Soldiers Left Without Warm Clothes for Drills in Norway (sputniknews, Sep 27, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201809271068386486-norway-netherlands-warm-clothes/

“Dutch soldiers have received 1,000 euros each to buy warm clothes ahead of the upcoming NATO exercise in Norway, where two-digit subzero spells are not uncommon at this time of the year.

Despite Scandinavia commonly being associated with a harsh climate among central Europeans, the Dutch defense ministry failed to take the necessary precautions and procure warm clothes for its contingent’s participation in the Trident Juncture 18 exercise, the biggest NATO drills in years, the newspaper De Telegraaf reported.

Instead of being provided warm clothes, the Dutch soldiers will have to go shopping themselves before heading north in a month.

Dutch Defense Minister Barbara Vesser attributed this wardrobe malfunction to a dramatic lack of time. Earlier, the Dutch soldiers had participated in drills in Lithuania, where no extra warm clothes were needed. The Dutch defense failed to take into account the upcoming drills in Norway, which left the Dutch military supplier with not enough time to provide the necessary clothes…”

  5. Dutch Government Might Question Religion Before Giving Gun License (sputniknews, Sep 27, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201809271068387109-netherlands-arms-license/

“The Dutch government intends to introduce amendments to legislation requiring those requesting arms licenses to provide information about their religion, ethnic origin, political views and philosophical convictions, the Volkskrant newspaper reports with reference to the House of Representatives of Parliament and its own sources.

According to the publication, the amendments will be submit for consideration next month. The changes are related to a new EU directive on obtaining the right to own weapons, which was proposed after the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015.

Proponents of the bill in the Netherlands believe that information is necessary to understand “risk factors” when issuing licenses. However, some parties, in particular, the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and the Democrats 66 (D66), have declared that stricter requirements violate the right to privacy and are not necessary.

“According to the minimum requirements of the European Directive, this is not necessary. We do not promote discrimination and ethnic profiling,” MP Monique den Bur said.

According to the newspaper, the Dutch police provides about 70,000 weapon licenses per year.”

  6. Black French Rapper Faces Charges for Singing ‘Kill White Babies’ (sputniknews, Sep 27, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201809271068384948-french-rapper-racial-hatred/

“The controversial video tells a story of a rapper and his sidekick who abduct, torture and violently kill a white man. The music clip has rocked the French public and drawn a series of furious comments from politicians and human rights activists.

A viral music video, filmed by French rapper of Cameroonian origin, Nick Conrad, has made waves in France for its calls to murder white babies and hang their parents.

The clip, reportedly shot in the Noisy-le-Grand commune in eastern Paris, opens with a disturbing scene in which Nick Conrad smokes a cigarette as a dead white man can be seen hanging behind him.

The story offers quite an unconventional plot: the man appears to have been abducted by two rappers and brought to an empty parking lot. Two black lads tell the man that he has a chance to save his life: he has 2 seconds to run away. But the man apparently fails to prove there is “magic in white DNA” and gets shot in the back.

The dire intro is followed by aggressive lyrics: “I go to nurseries and kill white babies. Catch them quickly and hang their parents, tear them up to entertain black kids of all ages big and small. Whip them hard, frankly, it stinks of death as blood is gushing.”

A catchy chorus goes, “Whities, hang them all, hang white people, hang them now” as the rapper curb-stomps the white man.

According to the French broadcaster BFMTV, the Paris prosecutors’ office has launched an inquiry into the video, and the rapper is likely to face court action for inciting racial hatred…”

    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201809271068383871-finland-terrorists-europe/

“Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo) said that more than 200 people convicted of terrorism-related crimes would be released from prisons in Western Europe in the coming years, YLE outlet reported Thursday.

These people may have established links with organized crime while in prison, YLE outlet reported, citing Supo Director Antti Pelttari.

“While in prison, these people may not necessarily have changed the way they think, unfortunately,” Pelttari said at a security seminar at the Parliament on Wednesday.

At the moment, Supo is reportedly monitoring about 370 people. According to Pelttari, people who fell prey to terrorist propaganda pose the biggest security risk.

The Supo director added that no factors would allow to lower the threat of terrorism at the moment. The intelligence agency has kept its assessment of threat level as “elevated” since 2017.

In the last several years, a number of terrorist attacks have been carried out in Europe. In Finland, 10 people were stabbed in the city of Turku, two of them died, in August 2017.”

  9. Boys More Likely To Be Victims Of Teen Dating Violence Than Girls, Study Shows

VANCOUVER — Who is more likely to be victimized by teen dating violence? If you’re quick to think it’s girls, new data shows you’re wrong. In a surprising twist, recently published research indicates boys are more likely to report being victims of dating violence committed by partners who hit, slap or push them.

Researchers with the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU) conducted a longitudinal study of dating violence. While reports of physical abuse went down over time, they say there is a troubling gender-related trend.

Five percent of teens reported physical abuse from their dating partners in 2013, down from 6 percent in 2003. But in the last year, 5.8 percent of boys reported dating violence compared to 4.2 percent of girls.

  10. #MeToo Is Making Colleges Teach Toxic Masculinity 101

Campus programs educating male students about ‘toxic masculinity’ report fresh energy and interest since the #MeToo movement began.

Garrett Robinson is a senior at Brown University, and a running back for the Brown Bears. Late last month, he co-led a mandatory training for freshman players, but it wasn’t about their skills on the football field.

He taught them about the dangers of being domineering off the field, that it’s OK to ask for help, and to watch the locker room talk.

Robinson is a peer educator in the Masculinity 101 program at Brown, which aims to help men lead healthier lives by addressing harmful norms of masculinity.

He has led similar workshops in the past, but this year was different.

“There were a few sarcastic responses playing into stereotypes of what you’d expect around this topic,” Robinson said, “but mostly, people were more engaged and understood it was serious.”

Brown’s program is part of a growing trend on campuses to address “toxic masculinity,” a term generally defined as elements of masculinity that encourage dominance and prevent men from showing emotion.

  11. Sen. Kamala Harris Blankets Facebook With Anti-Kavanaugh Ads

SEN. KAMALA HARRIS HAS A LOT TO SAY about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh: The California Democrat’s campaign has posted some 3,600 different Facebook ads about him, according to the social media site’s ad archive.

No other senator appears to be doing as much Kavanaugh-related advertising on Facebook.

Ms. Harris, who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, had dozens of active Kavanaugh ads up as of Wednesday afternoon, a day before all eyes will be on the committee as senators listen to testimony by Judge Kavanaugh and one woman who has accused him of sexual assault.

  12. Trump to world leaders: China out to meddle in 2018 election

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Taking center stage at the United Nations, President Donald Trump on Wednesday accused China of trying to interfere in the upcoming U.S. congressional elections because it opposes his tough trade policies. The White House provided scant evidence of anything akin to the level of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

“They do not want me or us to win because I am the first president ever to challenge China on trade,” Trump said as he chaired the U.N. Security Council for the first time. He made his accusation against the backdrop of the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the last election to help him and amid concerns that this November’s elections also could be vulnerable.

Asked later what evidence he had, Trump said there was “plenty” but didn’t immediately provide details, suggesting that some of the material was classified. Instead, he zeroed in on China’s propaganda efforts to flood the heartland with ads and statements against Trump’s billions of dollars in punishing tariffs.

Trump added: “I don’t like it when they attack our farmers and I don’t like it when they put out false messages. But beside that, we learned that they are trying to meddle in our elections and we’re not going to let that happen just as we’re not going to let that happen with Russia.”

  13. US B-52s fly near contested islands amid China tensions

Washington (CNN)The US Air Force conducted two bomber flights this week into areas considered sensitive by the Chinese military, missions that have come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing.
Earlier this week, US B-52 bombers flew from Guam and transited through the South China Sea, an area where the Chinese government has built islands and established military facilities on disputed features.
“That just goes on, if it was 20 years ago and had they not militarized those features there it would have been just another bomber on its way to Diego Garcia or wherever,” Secretary of Defense James Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon Wednesday when asked about the bomber flight.

    ALAMEDA, Calif. (KGO) —
What’s a rocket doing in the East Bay? That’s what one ABC7 viewer wants to know.

So ABC7 did some digging and it goes back to a story we first told you about in February.

RELATED: SKY7 spots stealthy space startup testing its rocket in Alameda

It concerns a company at the old Alameda Naval Air Station that makes a small rocket to carry tiny commercial satellites into orbit. But the company doesn’t talk to the media. So, some people who work nearby are just learning about it, like Tyler Mitchell at the St. George Spirit Company a few blocks away:

“I think there’s a lot of empty space here. Why not put it to good use? I would just be concerned to know what it’s actually for,” he said.

So would some of the people who live nearby.

  16. Amazon, AT&T, Google push Congress to pass online privacy bill to preempt stronger California law

SAN FRANCISCO — Major companies including Amazon, AT&T, Apple and Google are lobbying Congress to craft legislation that would preempt a first-of-its-kind California privacy law that grants sweeping online protections to consumers.

Senior executives from these companies, plus Twitter and Charter Communications, offered a show of industry support for a federal privacy bill with weaker consumer protections during a Senate hearing Wednesday.

Such a bill would block states like California from enacting stronger privacy protections. The executives argued that a patchwork of different state laws would make it tough for companies to operate and would threaten innovation. The takeaway from news outlet Axios: “Tech companies want privacy rules, but on their own terms.”

The testimony on Capitol Hill came one day after the Department of Commerce recommended new regulations on how companies handle consumers’ personal information that were similar to the ones being proposed by the tech and telecom industries.

  17. Ex-Google employee warns of ‘disturbing’ China plans

A former Google employee has warned of the firm’s “disturbing” plans in China, in a letter to US lawmakers.

Jack Poulson, who had been a senior researcher at the company until resigning in August, wrote that he was fearful of Google’s ambitions.

His letter alleges Google’s work on a Chinese product – codenamed Dragonfly – would aid Beijing’s efforts to censor and monitor its citizens online.

Google has said its work in China to date has been “exploratory”.

Ben Gomes, Google’s head of search, told the BBC earlier this week: “Right now all we’ve done is some exploration, but since we don’t have any plans to launch something there’s nothing much I can say about it.”

  18. Egypt arming Sinai tribesmen in fight against Islamic State (abcnews, Sep 27, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/egypt-arming-sinai-tribesmen-fight-islamic-state-58114698

“… In a switch from the past, the military has begun arming Bedouin tribesmen like Abu-Sefira and having them patrol in operations against the IS militants deep in the peninsula’s interior, where their local knowledge gives them an advantage, Abu-Sefira and other Bedouin say.

“We have to do it, it’s our duty to make the people feel safe from the terrorists who were killing us,” Abu-Sefira told The Associated Press by telephone from a checkpoint he was manning along with a dozen other men from the area, near the Halal mountains where the IS affiliate has been known to stockpile weapons and equipment.

The military has not publicly acknowledged arming and using the Bedouin as a fighting force, saying only that they cooperate and provide intelligence. In the past, security forces have been wary of giving weapons to the Bedouin, given the long history of tensions with the tribesmen. The shift appears to be an attempt to bring the Sinai population more onto the government’s side in the fight.

Egypt has struggled to defeat the insurgency, led by the IS affiliate known as the Sinai Province of the Islamic State…”

We know the answer to that question from yesterday’s report of a third accuser of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Her name is Julie Swetnick.

Today we know a little more about her thanks to an article posted last evening by Politico that reveals she was the target of a restraining order filed by a former boyfriend who claims Swetnick went ballistic after he broke up with her.

  21. Spokesman confirms: George Soros funded Fusion GPS

The General Security Directorate said in a statement on Thursday that the 27-year-old had confessed to being in contact with IS operatives in Syria who had instructed him to make bombs and prepare poison.

The statement says the man had readied the unspecified poison, aided by an unnamed person residing abroad but who had visited Lebanon seeking to carry out two operations.

The first operation involved poisoning water supplied to the Lebanese military in tanker trucks; the second involved poisoning food delivered to parties attended by Lebanese living abroad.

The agency says the suspect was caught before he could carry out the plots.”

  25. New (fourth) ‘allegation’ against Kavanaugh, completely anonymous, evokes a ‘payback’ motive
    By J.E. Dyer September 26, 2018

One may hesitate to refer to this as an actual allegation, since for all we know, a Russian bot sent it.

It is noteworthy, however, because it’s not about the early 1980s. This allegation is about the year 1998.

It was sent in an anonymous letter to U.S. Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), and purports to come from a friend of the alleged victim. The friend says the alleged victim’s daughter was present for the event. But the anonymous accuser names no one supposedly involved except Kavanaugh, which makes it impossible to investigate this in any way.

Senator Gardner’s office has acknowledged receiving it on 24 September, so we’ve got that going for us. Apparently the letter actually happened. The Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have questioned Kavanaugh, and he has denied that any such event ever occurred. Democrats participated in the phone call by which Kavanaugh was questioned, although NBC says they didn’t ask any questions.

  26. Migrant-Background City Area Residents Form ‘Resistance’ to ‘Racist’ Swedes (breitbart, Sep 27, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/09/27/migrant-background-residents-swedish-city-form-resistance-racist-swedes/

“A group of migrant-background residents of Malmö have formed a “resistance” group to fight “everyday racism” in response to the success of the anti-mass migration Sweden Democrats in the Swedish national elections.

“Welcome to the Resistance” claims to be a grassroots movement which has been organised by several people including local resident Miriam Negash who said the purpose of the “resistance” is to support migrant-background residents, immigrants, and asylum seekers who have suffered from racism, Sydsvenskan reports.

At their first meeting on Sunday, hundreds attended a demonstration at a square in the heavily migrant-populated area of Möllevången chanting slogans such as “All Malmö hates racists”, and “The city, the country, everything is ours”.

The demonstration also had several signs in Arabic, alongside Swedish. Due to mass migration, Arabic has become one of the most popular languages in Swedish language schools, with demand for Arabic lessons surpassing French and English.

Negash added that the movement is not formally tied to any existing groups or political parties and said: “We are many in Malmö, over 30 percent. We shouldn’t have to go and be afraid of the streets.”

The new movement comes only months after Palestinian migrant Hussam Alkoblawi formed a migrant-led political party in Malmö.

“I have been in Sweden for 30 years and have followed developments in Swedish society since then. I see all the differences that have arisen and we notice that recently the gap between foreign and Swedish citizens has grown bigger,” Alkoblawi said.

The migrant population in many Swedish cities continues to grow as mass migration has been revealed as the major factor in Sweden’s growing population overall.

In some areas of the country, migrant-background residents are now a majority, such as the municipality of Södertälje which has had recent problems with individuals stealing or destroying LGBT pride flags that were flown by the local government.

Mass migration has also seen an impact in the Swedish legal system after two “lay judges” from Muslim backgrounds used Sharia law principles in a case that saw a man accused of domestic abuse found not guilty because he came from a “good family” while his accuser did not.”

  27. EU Accused of Threatening Press Controls to Curb ‘Bad Nationalism’ and Anti-Soros, Pro-Brexit Narratives (breitbart, Sep 27, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/09/27/eu-commission-regulate-press-stop-bad-nationalism-curb-pro-brexit-narratives/

“The European Union’s Commissioner for Justice and Gender Equality has complained “the bad version of nationalism” is rising and hinted at media regulation to curb the problem, according to POLITICO.

V?ra Jourová, 54, claimed the “bad version of nationalism… is on the rise” along with “racial abuse and discrimination” and “hate online” in a speech in Vienna reported by the online outlet.

“Media can build the culture of dialogue or sow divisions, spread disinformation and encourage exclusion,” the eurocrat added, alleging that “The Brexit debate is the best example” of the latter.

“[D]o you remember the first page of a popular British daily calling the judges the ‘enemy of the people’?” she raged, referring to a Daily Mail article slamming senior justices who ruled MPs could block Brexit in late 2016.

“Or just last week, the EU leaders were called ‘Dirty Rats’ on another first page,” she added, referring to a more recent Sun article taking the bloc’s leadership to task for their shabby treatment of the British prime minister at a Salzburg summit.

“Almost daily we could find examples of stories that are spiced up to point out the enemy; to paint the picture black and white… I would advocate for a European approach to media based on quality and smart regulation, if needed,” the eurocrat warned.

The right-leaning tabloid offered a characteristically scathing reply to the EU Commissioner in a leader column responding to the speech, beginning: “Hands up if you know who Vera Jourova is. No, us neither.”…”

  28. France: Amid Terror Threat, Civilian Security Guards for Celebrities, Executives, Tourist Sites Get Guns (breitbart, Sep 27, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/09/27/france-terror-threat-civilian-security-guards-celebrities-executives-tourist-sites/

“Civilian security guards in France will be allowed to carry handguns to help combat the continuing radical Islamic terror threat.

Semi-automatic pistols and revolvers will be issued to guards working at sensitive sites including tourist attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, busy shopping centres, and concert venues, The Times newspaper reports, citing French media.

Radical Islamic terrorists inflicted around 150 fatalities and over 400 injuries with fully automatic firearms in Western Europe in 2015 — despite the draconian gun controls present in most of the continent — with the majority of the slaying taking place in France, and the Bataclan theatre in particular.

The interior ministry expects around 3,000 to apply for weapons permits for work pertaining to sensitive areas — but The Times reports that a further 600 private bodyguards “employed by celebrities and executives” are also expected to apply, leading to concerns that the wealthy and powerful will be able to purchase a higher degree of security than the average French citizen, who has no right to bear arms.

The National Consultative Committee on Human Rights is reported to be unhappy with the changes, indicating that it is more concerned with firearms becoming more commonplace in society than in increasing the country’s resilience to radical Islamic terror attacks.

France suffered 20 such attacks since 2014 to March this year and has been targetted by jihadists to a greater extent than any other European country — thanks in part to immigration and deportation policies which are fairly weak relative to, for example, Italy, according to counter-extremism experts.

“Italy’s expulsion policy is a crucial factor in explaining the country’s success in preventing episodes of violent Islamist fundamentalism,” radicalisation expert Francesco Marone, of the Milan-based think tank ISPI, told Haaretz.

Italy finds such expulsions easier to carry out than countries such as France and Great Britain do, because it does not award second-generation migrants citizenship automatically.”

  31. HRW: Boys as young as 9 forcibly disappeared by Iraq forces (memo, Sep 27, 2018)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20180927-hrw-boys-as-young-as-9-forcibly-disappeared-by-iraq-forces/

“Iraq’s mistreatment of its Sunni population has come under scrutiny following a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report which found that thousands of mainly Sunni Iraqi men were arbitrarily arrested and forcibly disappeared by government forces and allied local armed groups since 2014.

In the report titled “Life Without a Father is Meaningless”, published today, the rights group documented the cases of enforced disappearance in the country. It found 74 cases of men and four cases of boys who were detained by Iraqi military and security forces between April 2014 and October 2017.

In the cases documented, family members said they could obtain no information about the fate or whereabouts of the detainees and detainees were not allowed any contact with the outside world.

With the exception of eight individuals who were disappeared all the cases documented in the report were Sunni Arab males. The youngest disappeared victim was nine years old, and the oldest 70, with the majority of the disappeared in their thirties.

The report described a trail of abuse the followed victims of enforced disappearance. “The enforced disappearance was accompanied by other human rights abuses including arbitrary arrest and detention; ill-treatment; and extrajudicial execution”, the report said.

Family members were also subjected to extortions. Many relatives and witnesses cited in the report said that they were asked to pay extortionate sums of money for the release of prisoners. In one case, a father said an officer asked for a bribe in order to facilitate his son’s release. The father said he refused, saying he did not have the means, and his son has not been released since.

Most of the victims are being detained by the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) or the National Security Service (NSS) in unofficial places of detention. These cases, according to HRW, “call into question the assertions by the PMF commission, the group’s governing body, that PMF groups “do not detain any individuals in Iraq”. HRW said that these originations, which have been incorporated into the state army, have no mandate to hold prisoners in this manner.

“The enforced disappearances documented in this report are part of a much wider pattern in Iraq,” the report said, adding that a previous publication had documented the detention of at least 7,374 individuals in Mosul on charges of affiliation with Daesh, largely without notifying their families.

The group called on the US, UK, Germany, France “and other states providing military, security and intelligence assistance to Iraq to urge the Iraqi authorities to investigate allegations of enforced disappearances and to investigate the role of their own assistance in these alleged violations.” They asked these countries to “suspend military, security and intelligence assistance to units involved in these violations”. Furthermore, HRW called on these countries to “maintain the suspension of assistance until the government adopts measures to end these serious human rights violations””

“At least four terrorists who were plotting terror attacks were “neutralized” in Turkey’s eastern and southeastern provinces, local authorities and security sources said on Thursday.

Turkish authorities often use the word “neutralized” in their statements to imply the terrorists in question either surrendered or were killed or captured.

In a statement by the governor’s office of eastern Tunceli province, two terrorists were neutralized in counter-terrorism operation held in the rural areas of Mazgirt district by provincial gendarmerie forces.

The statement by the governor’s office did not specify the terror groups involved but Turkey is embroiled in a long-running struggle against the PKK terror group in the area.

Separately, two PKK terrorists were also “neutralized” in southeastern Sirnak province, said security sources who asked to remain anonymous due to media restrictions.

Out of the two terrorists, one was captured alive while the other was killed during the operation. The captured terrorist was identified to be an Iranian national and responsible of terrorist group’s Farasin region.

Operations in the region are ongoing, the sources said.

Five suspects were arrested in simultaneous operations conducted by special forces units in Eskisehir province, said the source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

In Kirsehir, security forces units have conducted anti-terror operation during wee hours of Thursday and arrested six suspects over their alleged links to Daesh terrorist organization.

Security forces have been involved in a long-running campaign to clear Daesh terrorists from Turkey.

“The European Border and Coast Guard Agency said on Thursday that it has started testing Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in Italy, Greece and Portugal as part of a border monitoring mission.

“This week, Frontex, the European Border and Coast Agency, has begun testing the use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in Greece, Italy and Portugal to monitor the European Union’s external borders. Frontex is exploring the surveillance capability of the medium altitude long endurance RPAS and evaluating the related cost efficiency and endurance,” the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, also known as Frontex, said in a statement.

Frontex will also test unmanned aircraft in several operational situations, including sea surveillance, detection of ships suspected of criminal activities such as smuggling of weapons and drugs as well as the support of search and rescue operations, according to the statement.

The RPAS being tested by the agency are equipped with thermal cameras and radars. In Portugal, Frontex said it was using smaller unmanned aircraft to monitor the North Atlantic Ocean and share this data in real time.

The testing in Greece and Italy is expected to be completed this year, the agency added.”

  37. MSF wants new flag for migrant rescue ship Aquarius

Rome (AFP) – Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Thursday launched an appeal to world governments to give migrant rescue boat Aquarius a flag after Panama removed it from its register, preventing it working legally.

“We appeal to all governments, not just European, to governments who care about people’s lives so that we get a flag,” Claudia Lodesani, the head of MSF Italy, told journalists.

“We want to continue to work in the Mediterranean, the most dangerous sea in the world today, in a transparent and legal way, as we have always done,” she said.

The Aquarius, chartered by MSF and SOS Mediterranee, is the only civilian ship still trying to rescue migrants making the perilous journey from North Africa to Europe.

It is currently carrying 58 migrants rescued in the southern Mediterranean but cannot dock after Panama on Saturday revoked its flag owing to “non-respect” of “international legal procedures”.

Malta has said it will transfer the 58 migrants to one of its boats in international waters and bring them to Malta. They will then be taken to four European countries that have agreed to take them in.

“People are still dying at sea, it isn’t true that there are no more deaths, just that we see them less because there are no more witnesses, we are the last boat,” Lodesani said.

Asked whether the Vatican might give the Aquarius a flag, SOS Mediterranee operations chief Frederic Penard said such an offer would be welcome.

Vatican spokesman Greg Burke declined to comment when asked about the possibility.

Three Swiss lawmakers have meanwhile urged their country to allow the Aquarius to fly the Swiss flag.

The trio — Ada Marra, Kurt Fluri and Guillaume Barazzone, who all belong to different parties — made the demand Wednesday in parliament, citing Switzerland’s “long humanitarian tradition” including migrant protection.

Marra, Fluri and Barazzone asked the government to make use of a clause in maritime law exceptionally permitting such a move and the foreign ministry confirmed to AFP that it was “competent” to do so.

“We cannot remain unmoved by the situation of all these migrants who are in danger and in distress in international waters in the Mediterranean. This concerns us all as human beings on this planet,” Barazzone told RTS radio.

Italy govt touched bottom on Aquarius

Italy pressured Panama to remove flag says Sunderland

ANSA) – Rome, September 26 – The director of Human Rights Watch for Europe and central Asia, Judith Sunderland, on Wednesday said in an article on the Aquarius migrant rescue ship that ” the current Italian government’s inhuman approach to refugees and migrants has touched the bottom once more.” Sunderland repeated claims that the government, led by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, put pressure on Panama to stop the ship using its flag.

The Aquarius, operated by SOS Méditerranée and Doctors Without Borders, was rejected by Italy and sailed on for three days before before finding a landing spot in Malta.

Its 58 migrants will be distributed among France, Spain, Portugal and Germany.
