  2. Morocco’s BCIJ Arrests 12 Suspects Linked to Terror, Criminal Networks (moroccoworldnews, Sep 18, 2018)
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2018/09/253670/moroccos-bcij-arrests-12-suspects-linked-to-terror-criminal-networks/

“Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) has arrested 12 suspects with alleged ties to criminal and terror networks in Casablanca and Tangier.

According to a joint statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), one of the suspects has ties with ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Authorities said the list includes former prisoners convicted of terrorism and extremism. Today’s statement added that other suspects have criminal records for undermining public safety, drug trafficking, and kidnapping for ransom, and using knives for criminal purposes.

BCIJ conducted the arrest in coordination with DGSN and DGST.

The communiqué noted that members of the same criminal network attempted to storm an apartment in Tangier on Friday, causing the death of a person suspected of involvement in drugs, who fell from the seventh floor of the building.

An investigation into the Friday incident enabled authorities to seize a range of items, including masks, gloves, knives, and shock-proof vest.

Authorities put the suspects in custody for further investigations to identify the suspects’ possible links to other criminal networks.

The operation followed a similar arrest of three suspects on September 6 who were active in Tetouan and Agadir.

Police arrested the suspects for ties with ISIS.

The security agency has carried out several operations dismantling terror cells with links to ISIS throughout the year.

BCIJ staff arrested seven pro-ISIS extremists in July operating in central Morocco, near Agadir and Marrakech.

In another BCIJ operation, police arrested four suspects on July 2 in four Moroccan cities.

In response to terror threats, especially after Marrakech’s terror attack in 2011, Morocco modernized and upgraded its security system to fight radicalization and organized crime.”

  3. Erdo?an praises education policies under AKP (hurriyetdailynews, Sep 18, 2018)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/erdogan-praises-education-policies-under-akp-136987

“President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has praised what he called developments made in the Turkish education system under the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

“We have relegated a monolithic and repressive mindset in the education system in the pages of history. We have achieved a more free and democratic system,” Erdo?an said at a conference at Istanbul’s prestigious Kabata? High School on Sept. 18, marking the beginning of the new education year.

“We demonstrated the determination that the previous governments should have shown. We never avoided taking responsibility by saying the system was always bad. We made deep-rooted reforms,” he added.

He said “grand projects” initiated by the AKP, namely the Fatih Project and the 4+4+4 system shift — a change in the length of compulsory education in primary, middle and high schools — had faced “resistance” from opposition groups.

“The resistance came from those who wanted to make education a tool in ideological clashes,” he said…”

  4. Turkish intelligence officers detained in FETÖ investigation (hurrietdailynews, Sep 18, 2018)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-intelligence-officers-detained-in-feto-investigation-136962

“More than a dozen noncommissioned officers of Turkey’s National Intelligence Service (M?T) have been detained in an investigation into FETÖ.

The Chief Prosecutor’s Office in Ankara announced on Sept. 18 that the 15 officers were on active duty at M?T’s signal intelligence department.

The officers were detained in Ankara and six other provinces.

The operation is based on testimonies of military personnel who were previously detained in a FETÖ investigation and agreed to cooperate with the prosecution.

As part of a probe into the FETÖ infiltration of the Turkish Naval Forces Command and Coast Guard Command, 10 soldiers were detained on Sept. 17.

The soldiers include a lieutenant colonel, two squadron leaders, three lieutenants and four sergeants.

FETÖ and its U.S.-based leader Fethullah Gülen are believed to have orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people dead and nearly 2,200 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETÖ of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.”

  5. RSC satire about a Muslim cleric is a dangerous move, admits director of new take on Tartuffe (telegraph, Sep 18, 2018)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/09/18/rscs-tartuffe-satirising-muslim-cleric-birmingham-dangerous/

“When Moliere’s Tartuffe was first performed in 1664 it was promptly banned due to its vicious satire of Catholicism.

In order to guarantee that the latest Royal Shakespeare Company adaptation has a similar “edge”, the French farce about a charlatan priest who tricks his way into exploiting a wealthy family has been set in Birmingham’s Pakistani community, the protagonist a convert to Islam.

Iqbal Khan, the director, admitted that satirising a Muslim cleric was “dangerous” and that they expected to alienate audiences.

But he said it was felt that as a satire, it was important to update the context as far as possible.

“This seems to be a play that really speaks to our present condition, he told BBC Radio 4’s Front Row.

“It’s set against a religious hypocrite and that has to be dangerous, I think, and a Muslim cleric is obviously a slightly more dangerous context. Setting it in Birmingham… it allows us to be provocative and topical.”

He added: “We thought it would be more divisive and might alienate more people than it seems to have done but they seem to have really recognised the truth of the situations we are representing on stage.”

Anil Gupta, who co-wrote the adaptation alongside Richard Pinto, acknowledged that much of the play’s power is derived from the fact that it “makes the audience a bit uncomfortable”.

He said that to have the desired effect, it needed to tread the same fine line between controversy and entertainment…”
