  1. Channel 4 – The rise of the far-right in Germany

    ( 10 min 57 )

Nowhere is the rise of the far right more poignant and alarming than in Berlin, Europe’s powerhouse. This city is pockmarked with the bitter lessons of history.

Germany has worked hard at what they call “Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung”, or overcoming the past.

There are strict laws against hate crimes. And yet the city of Chemnitz saw mass rallies with neo-Nazi overtones in August and last week there were similar but smaller marches in Koethen.

What’s more, the anti-immigrant AFD is now the official opposition party in the Bundestag with 92 MPs. They deny any links with extremists but we spoke to one extreme right-wing leader who believes it opens doors to his kind of views.

This film shows the extent to which fringe figures now feel they can speak out and also the public following they are gaining.

This film contains themes some may find offensive.

  2. Prison officers’ walkout ‘will raise risk of violence’ (express, Sep 14, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1017796/Prison-officers-walkout-will-raise-risk-of-violence

“MINISTERS condemned a nationwide strike by prison officers yesterday. Thousands of guards protested over safety, with many saying they had been attacked by gangs of inmates.

Drugs are rife in many prisons and the action came after a watchdog warned on Thursday of a “dangerous lack of control” at HMP Bedford.

General Secretary of the Prison Officers’ Association Steve Gillan said prisons minister Rory Stewart “recognised that our concerns are justified and need addressing”.

Mr Stewart had earlier branded the protest “illegal” and judges warned trials were halted because defendants could not be brought to court from custody.

Justice Secretary David Gauke said: “We have to take steps to reduce the violence. I agree with those who say that the level of violence is unacceptably high.

“But action of this sort does nothing to help that process, and locking prisoners up for 24 hours a day, which may be the consequence of what the POA are doing, increases the risk of violence.”

Mr Gauke risked “inflaming” the row ahead of talks on Monday, Mr Gillan said.

At least 5,000 prison officers protested from 7am in car parks and outside entrances.

But following talks between ministers and union chiefs, staff returned to work early in the afternoon.”

  3. Driver held in France for directing car at crowd, injuring 2 (abcnews, Sep 14, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/driver-targets-crowd-southern-france-injuring-57818115

“Police in southern France held a man on suspicion of attempted murder Friday after he allegedly steered his car toward a crowd, lightly injuring two people.

A police spokeswoman said road barriers stopped the car before it hit the pedestrians head-on in the town of Nimes, which celebrates its annual grape-harvesting festival this weekend.

The man was arrested after the incident at around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The spokeswoman said she had no information about the man’s motives. She noted the investigation was being led by police who handle more routine crimes, not counter-terrorism investigators who step in when extremism is suspected.

The officer said she wasn’t authorized to be identified by name talking about the probe.

An official close to the investigation said the man was hospitalized and police investigators were unable to question him immediately or to verify reports he was heard at the scene shouting “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great.”

The official asked for anonymity while the investigation was in an early stage.

The local Midi Libre newspaper said bystanders kept the man, who witnesses said appeared to be in his 30s, from fleeing the scene.”

  4. Orbán Warns EU Planning to ‘Open the Gate’ with New Brussels Border Force (breitbart, Sep 14, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/09/14/orban-eu-open-border-brussels/

“EU plans to denationalise border protection and put Brussels in charge present a serious threat to Hungary and the whole of Europe, Viktor Orbán has warned.

The European Parliament’s vote on Thursday to censure Hungary over so-called “values” poses very little threat, the prime minister said, declaring that a much bigger battle will be over EU draft law which would put Brussels in control of national border protection and asylum policy.

On Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed stopping illegal immigration would require “that the countries with an external border must give up some of their national responsibilities”.

“That requires a degree of solidarity, it is about people coming to us or our duty to make legal migration possible to help countries that are in trouble,” she added.

Speaking Friday morning, Orbán said: “Angela Merkel has said that the plan is that part of the border control should be handed over from frontier states to Brussels.”

“They want to take away from us the keys to the gate,” stated Orbán, telling national radio the nation’s next battle will be over “who will protect Hungary’s borders”.

“Because they were unable to persuade Hungary to let migrants in, the plan now is that they will take border protection rights away from us.

“They want no less than to send their mercenaries from Brussels to replace our Hungarians who are defending the border, and working as police and soldiers, whose homeland is important.

“Let us not be under any illusion… they will allow in migrants,” he added, warning that the EU leadership wants to destroy Hungarian resistance.

Almost all media coverage of EU plans to strengthen the bloc’s border agency, Frontex, has reported the move as Brussels getting serious about stopping illegal immigration to ward off rising populism.

But much of the draft legislation, which was presented by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at his State of the Union address, was about denationalising asylum policy and border protection.

The bill would “expand the sphere of influence of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO)”, globalist media outlet Infomigrants said, reporting: “The main area where Juncker wants to see EASO take more responsibility is assisting EU member states with speeding up the processing of asylum applications while also contributing their expertise when migrants appeal against negative decisions made in the EU countries where they lodged their applications.”

Announcing the draft changes, Juncker said: “We cannot continue to squabble to find ad-hoc solutions each time a new ship arrives. Temporary solidarity is not good enough. We need lasting solidarity – today and forever more.”

The legislation also has the full support of the EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos, an open borders-backing idealogue who vowed that Europe “will never be a fortress” in May, as he promised the continent was set to absorb massive waves of third world migration “for decades to come”.

“From now onwards, the European Border and Coast Guard and the future EU Agency for Asylum will be able to ensure EU solidarity on the ground at all times, in all situations, whilst fully respecting member states’ competences,” Avramopoulos said of the draft legislation.”

Student activist Elin Ersson protested against the Swedish government’s policy of deporting some rejected asylum seekers to Afghanistan by boarding an Istanbul-bound flight that carried an Afghan man who was to be returned home after being denied asylum.

With a ticket for the flight that was purchased by the activist group ‘Sittstrejken i Goteborg’, the activist boarded the plane and then refused to sit down until the Afghan man was let off. Flights are not allowed to take off until all passengers are safely in their seats.
