  1. Criminals impersonating our staff in Libya: UN (gulftoday, Sep 9, 2018)
    http://gulftoday.ae/portal/bd0e663d-cd00-4b23-8f19-3fb68cc61c18.aspx

“GENEVA: The UN decried on Saturday “reliable reports” that smugglers and traffickers were impersonating its staff in Libya to target desperate migrants and refugees, and demanded action to hold them to account.

The UN refugee agency said reliable sources were indicating that smugglers and traffickers trying to pretend they worked with different UN organisations had been seen in a range of different locations across the conflict-torn country.

“These criminals were spotted at disembarkation points and smuggling hubs, using vests and other items with logos similar to that of UNHCR,” it said in a statement.

The agency said it had received information about the problem from among other “refugees who report having been sold to traffickers in Libya, and subjected to abuse and torture, including after having been intercepted at sea.”

Spokesman Babar Baloch however told reporters that it remained unclear if the fake UN employees had succeeded in tricking migrants and refugees who subsequently faced abuse, saying the agency was still investigating.

“We want the authorities to go after these people,” he said, stressing that they clearly had “criminal intent” and were going after people who were already extremely vulnerable…”

“Obama’s full speech on the state of American democracy”
    CBS News – September 7, 2018
    Video + Transcript

    Excerpt:

Now, understand, this is not just a matter of Democrats versus Republicans or liberals versus conservatives. At various times in our history, this kind of politics has infected both parties. Southern Democrats were the bigger defenders of slavery. It took a Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, to end it. Dixiecrats filibustered anti-lynching legislation, opposed the idea of expanding civil rights, and although it was a Democratic President and a majority Democratic Congress, spurred on by young marchers and protestors, that got the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act over the finish line, those historic laws also got passed because of the leadership of Republicans like Illinois’ own Everett Dirksen.

  3. Saudi YouTuber details attack by ‘government agents’ in London (alaraby, Sep 7, 2018)
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2018/9/6/youtuber-details-violent-attack-by-saudi-agents-in-london

“A popular Saudi video-blogger famous for his satirical anti-regime YouTube show has told The New Arab how he was beaten and his friend bribed by presumed Saudi agents in London’s Hyde Park on Friday, in what he calls an attempt to scare Saudi dissidents across the world into submission under the repressive crackdown led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Ghanem al-Masarir al-Dosari, who amasses millions of views – mostly from Saudis – for his videos deriding the corruption that riddles the kingdom’s royal family, said he was followed by a pair of men who were “without a doubt” agents sent by the Saudi government.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is the favoured target of ridicule on Ghanem’s channel, who often portrays Riyadh’s de facto ruler as a little bear he calls “al-dib al-dasher” – which translates roughly as “the tubby teddy bear”.

After having coffee with a friend in London’s Knightsbridge district, Ghanem – who claimed asylum in the UK – was walking towards Hyde Park with his friend when they realised they were being followed.

The two alleged agents began shouting abuse at Ghanem before a confrontation ensued in front of the Harrods department store, where one of the assailants punched Ghanem in the face.

The debacle, which took place in central London in broad daylight, attracted a crowd of onlookers who took videos and photos on their phones and posted them on social media.

The videos, however, attracted the online attentions of pro-government Saudis who started a variety of hashtags celebrating the attack…”

  4. Shaken Dutch lawmaker Wilders says no more Prophet cartoons, for now (reuters, Sep 8, 2018)

“Dutch lawmaker and anti-Islam campaigner Geert Wilders has said he has no plans, for now, to revive a competition of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed after it emerged as a motive for a stabbing in Amsterdam last week.

Wilders, speaking on the sidelines of a conference in Italy, expressed shock over the attack, in which a man stabbed and injured two American tourists at Amsterdam’s central station. Dutch media identified the assailant as a 19-year-old Afghan.

The attack came after Wilders canceled plans to hold the cartoon competition, which had also drawn a complaint by Pakistan’s new foreign minister, who said cartoon depictions of the Prophet could incite hate and intolerance.

“For now I will not be doing it soon again, for sure,” Wilders told Reuters at the Ambrosetti conference, where he had been invited to speak on the future of the European Union.

“On the one hand you say that you should never give in to people who threaten to use violence against freedom of speech,” he said, adding that he had spent 15 years living in safe houses and escorted by a security detail due to constant death threats.

“If it would have been only about me, I would have continued and done it again but it was not only about me — it was about innocent people,” he said.”
