  3. Tucker Slams ‘Activist Corporate America’: ‘There’s Nothing Free About This Market’

    • The Vietnam veteran in my family said that there was always something funny about McCain and that the ex US special forces guys especially LRRPs really hated him post war (obviously at reunions). They never said why but the impression that he had was that McCain had been “turned” while a POW, resulting in the deaths of not a few other POWs and was now a communist plant and they could not prove it. His subsequent political career seems to back this.

  5. Yemeni Forces Hit Saudi Frigate in Red Sea (tasnimnews, Sep 1, 2018)
    https://www.tasnimnews.com/en/news/2018/09/01/1817733/yemeni-forces-hit-saudi-frigate-in-red-sea

“According to Yemen’s al-Masirah TV, the Yemeni forces have attacked the Saudi frigate in Red Sea waters off the coasts of Jizan, inflicting casualties on invaders.

A source in Yemen’s Navy said Saudi Arabia has transferred the injured from the frigate to hospitals in Jizan.

The source described the strike as a retaliatory attack in response to the killing of Yemeni fishermen in a recent Saudi-led air raid on fishing boats near the island of Akban in Yemen’s western province of Hudaydah.

Head of Yemen’s General Authority for Fisheries Abdul Qader al-Wadai said on Friday that dozens of fishermen were aboard three boats near the island of Akban when the Saudi-led coalition launched an aerial attack on them and killed 19.

People of Yemen have been under massive attacks by the Saudi-led coalition for nearly three years. Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Over 14,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.”

  6. US media highlights Crown Prince’s ‘impressive reforms’ (saudigazette, Sep 1, 2018)
    https://saudigazette.com.sa/article/542455/SAUDI-ARABIA/US-media-highlights-Crown-Princes-impressive-reforms

“Reforms undertaken and spearheaded by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, have not only won plaudits worldwide but are being highlighted by the US media.

Writing in Fox News Joel C. Rosenberg said: “A reformer is rising, pursuing the most dramatic economic, social and foreign policy changes in the history of the Kingdom.”

The opinion writer lists the reforms undertaken by the Crown Prince also known as MBS:

On June 24, 2018, it became legal for women to drive in the Kingdom.

More than 120,000 Saudi women have already applied for licenses, and officials expect there to be 3 million women drivers by 2020.

Saudi women may now attend soccer matches and sporting events.

Gyms and fitness centers for women are opening throughout the Kingdom.

Women’s sports teams are forming in the Kingdom.

Saudi women may now join the military and intelligence services.

Movies theaters are legally opening for the first time in 35 years.

Concerts by international artists are now permitted.

Tourist visas are now available for international travelers to visit the Kingdom without having to pay an exorbitant fee.

MBS has launched a strategy called “Vision 2030” to wean the Kingdom off of oil revenues — what he calls their “dangerous addiction to oil” — and diversify the economy.

Financial reforms are being made to attract international investors.

MBS has launched an anti-corruption campaign and already recovered $100 billion from officials.

MBS has committed some $500 billion to build a futuristic new city along the Red Sea called “NEOM” that will link Saudi Arabia with Egypt and Jordan and create high-tech businesses and thousands of new jobs.

The Crown Prince is increasingly outspoken that the most serious threat to peace in the Mideast is Iran, and he’s urging world leaders to join forces to neutralize the Iran threat.

Last year, the Kingdom opened a new Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology, aimed at “refuting extremist rhetoric…. combating its activities and curbing its impact….[and] promoting moderation, tolerance and coexistence.

“Clearly something historic is underway in Saudi Arabia. MBS and his team should be lauded for the progress they have made, and encouraged to keep going,” Rosenberg wrote.”

  7. Iran sends ballistic missiles to Shia proxies in Iraq (memo, Sep 1, 2018)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20180901-iran-sends-ballistic-missiles-to-shia-proxies-in-iraq/

“Reliable Iranian, Iraqi and Western sources have alleged that Tehran has moved ballistic missiles to its Shia proxies in Iraq in order to be able to hit its enemies if it is attacked, Reuters reported on Friday. A number of short-range missiles are said to have been sent across the border over the past few months.

“The logic is to have a backup plan if Iran is attacked,” one senior Iranian official told the international news agency. “The number of missiles is not high, just a couple of dozen, but it can be increased if necessary.”

Iran has previously said that its ballistic missile deployments are purely defensive in nature. Officials declined to comment when asked by Reuters about the latest move. Neither the Iraqi government nor army were prepared to comment, it added.”

  8. Tunisia returns Russian military equipment seized en route to Libya’s Haftar (memo, Sep 1, 2018)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20180901-tunisia-returns-russian-military-equipment-seized-en-route-to-libyas-haftar/

“The Tunisian authorities have decided to return Russian military equipment which was seized en route to the renegade Libyan General Khalifa Haftar, Almesryoon.com reported on Friday. The goods were discovered when a Panamanian-registered ship called into the Tunisian port of Sfax for repairs.

Customs officers checked the 24 containers on board and found military equipment including 66 vehicles. Monitors estimated that there was enough to equip 300 troops. According to security sources, the ship’s owner pledged to pay the cost of returning the equipment to Russia.

Officials on board the vessel denied that it was carrying military equipment. The containers, they explained, were sealed by the Russians and were heading for Cameroon.

Media in Libya have reported that Haftar is described by many Libyans as “Russia’s hand” in the country. The ship’s original destination, they said, was Benghazi.

Haftar is backed by Russia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Reports have claimed that he has asked Russia to build a military base in the country, but his spokesman denied this.”

“Chad forces bombarded rebel positions around Tibesti, a town in the far north on the Libyan border, security and local sources told AFP on Saturday.

A security source said the bombardment, which followed weeks of monitoring of rebel movements, targeted a site between the localities of Miski and Yebibou.

A local source said a dozen local people had been injured in the operation, which it said “targeted a wedding convoy” – an allegation which could not be independently confirmed.

Contacted by AFP, the armed forces made no comment…”

    https://tribune.com.pk/story/1793273/1-pentagon-cancels-300-aid-pakistan-csf/

“The US military said it has made a final decision to cancel $300 million in aid to Pakistan that had been suspended over Islamabad’s perceived failure to take decisive action against militants, in a new blow to deteriorating ties.

The so-called Coalition Support Funds were part of a broader suspension in aid to Pakistan announced by President Donald Trump at the start of the year, when he accused Pakistan of rewarding past assistance with “nothing but lies & deceit.”…”

  11. Terror suspects are being deported to UK from war-torn countries ‘without the knowledge of British authorities’ (dailymail, Sep 1, 2018)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6121363/Now-foreign-countries-deporting-terror-suspects-Britain-without-UK-authorities-knowing.html

“The Government has said it has no idea how many terrorists may have been deported back to the UK.

Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes made the admission in a response to a parliamentary question lodged by Independent MP John Woodcock in January.

Mr Woodcock asked the Home Office for the number of UK nationals who have been deported ‘on suspicion of terror offences’ by country of deportation in each of the last five years.

Following a delay of almost five months, Ms Nokes responded: ‘The UK government does not hold a complete data set relating to individuals deported to the UK, broken down in this way, since UK nationals are not as a matter of course subject to immigration controls on arrival.

‘In addition, not all countries will disclose that they are deporting an individual to the UK or that that there is a terrorism concern relating to them.

‘The UK has developed close partnerships with countries which are a priority for joint work on international counter-terrorism in order to manage the risk to the UK from terrorism.

‘Data on the use of tools and powers available to manage the threat to the UK from individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism, including managing their return to the UK, are due for publication shortly in the annual Government Transparency Report on Disruptive and Investigatory Powers.’

An estimated 850 Britons travelled to Syria and Iraq in order to join ISIS. Approximately half of these people are believed to have returned to the UK.

Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee in the House of Commons Dominic Grieve told The Express: ‘There is quite a high level of co-operation between countries.

‘The EU is a great facilitator of this, and there’s co-operation with lots of other countries which leads to them telling us they have arrested a British national and are sending them back.

‘But the co-operation needs to be improved as much as possible. There are some countries, usually those with very poor human rights records, where communication is very difficult.'”

  12. The Media Is Lavishing Praise On McCain After His Passing, But Look At What It Had To Say When He Ran Against Obama

The media has lauded Arizona Sen. John McCain’s record of remarkable bipartisanship following his death Saturday, but it seems the media have all but forgotten its history of painting the “maverick” as a hate-filled radical.

While campaigning for his 2008 president run, McCain was portrayed as an extremist, receiving blame for the racial and political tension seemingly brewing in American politics.

Accusations bubbled after McCain aired a campaign ad referring to then-opponent Barack Obama as a celebrity. Following its release, The New York Times editorial board promptly responded calling it a “racially tinged attack” since the ad juxtaposed Obama with young white celebrities.

Other media outlets quickly followed suit: Bill Press, co-host of CNN’s Crossfire, accused the ad of being “deliberately and deceptively racist;” MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann said it was “almost subliminal racism” and Talking Points Memo co-founder Josh Marshall contended that McCain is “pushing the caricature of Obama as a uppity young black man whose presumptuousness is displayed not only in taking on airs above his station but also in a taste for young white women,” reported Politico. Ezra Klein, co-founder of Vox, also accused McCain of “running crypto-racist ads” during his campaign.
