A couple of points of changing perspectives on items of cultural interest

Below is a video on an airline crash that took place in 1999. As you watch, think on how people both in Egypt and in the US would interpret the actions that took place. And then, how readers of this site who are quite knowledgeable on the zeitgeist of Islam, would interpret these events and motives today.

Also interesting is the manner and reasons for which the Egyptian agency would differ from the FBI explanation for the event. And how the FBI understanding would differ then from how it might see it now.

Secondly, there was a charming film made by Monty Python member, Terry Gilliam in 1988. Although there is a free version on Youtube it was messed with so it could pass CR protection and as such doesn’t look as good or sound as good as it deserves and I would ask those interested to please rent it, also available on Youtube.

The film is called, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen  and is a mystical adventure story, seemingly for kids. It has Robin Williams in it as King of the Moon, and Uma Thurman as the goddess, Venus. (Perfectly cast I might add.)

When I saw it in 1988, I had little to no knowledge of the things and events of today, nor the relevant history. I am expecting that a number of readers also had seen this film around that time.

Initially, the plan was to write an essay about the thoughts, watching this film today, inspired. But it would be far more fun and informative to ask our readers to watch it and see how it effects them now, as opposed to then, had they seen it before. If you have not seen it before, how you relate to it now, and what its about.

Please feel free to write your impressions in the comments. I think you will understand why when you see it.

Frankly I was a little stunned to see how differently I saw it now as then.

I very much look forward to reading your impressions in the comments, should you decide to commit the time to watching the film and writing on it.

Thank you

  1. That is an old story(obviously) and at the time we all knew who and why at the time but the MSM trod the Egyptian line especially in Africa.
I doubt now that any western governmental authority would have the courage to be honest about such an incident (viz the rubbish about the Malaysian airliner).
IIRC shortly before this one there was an Algerian pilot whose wife was divorcing him who allahu akbar’d his infidel passengers into mincemeat by doing the same thing in ?Africa. My entire family will not travel in any airline where a muslim pilot is possible and yes you can obtain a flight crew list albeit with difficulty.
I still think that the German pilot whose allahu akbars have never been released did the same thing as a cryptoconvert. The MSM and western governments everywhere are complicit in such cover ups and need to brought to heel by any means.

  2. Here is one more step into the past.

October 20, 2001 – The Concert for New York City

    Excerpt:

After The Who’s performance, FDNY firefighter Mike Moran spoke to the audience, explaining that his brother was killed on 9/11, and that the victims would not be forgotten. He ended by saying “In the spirit of the Irish people, Osama Bin Laden, you can kiss my royal, Irish ass!” which was met with wild cheering and applause. Moran removed his cap and concluded with, “This is my face, bitch!” which was, again, met with cheers from the crowd.

  3. Here’s another step back into the past.

October 20, 2001 – The Concert for New York City at Madison Square Garden in New York City in response to the September 11 attacks.

  4. I remember it crashed just off the coast here.
My Dad and I walked around the little memorial park dedicated to the victims of Lockerbie, 1988. He was convinced that EgyptAir 990 was murder-suicide.

    • Hi yucki !!!

Recently in some waiting room I got talking with a Lady who told me she was from Pakistan. The small talk led to me asking her how often she flew back to her old country which she answered with “at least once a year”. “Aren’t you afraid of flying”, I asked her in a generic way – “Oh” she said, “my husband has contacts and gets information about the pilote before we fly; we never take a flight ANYWHERE, where the pilot is a muslim.
In self-censure mode: SHE said it, not I 😉

      • An honest lady muslim!
My group of NOT PC friends have a list of medical specialists. With pix and short bios. East Asian and older Jews. We’ve got an excellent nephrologist from India.
        That’s it.

  5. I watched half of Baron last night with the kids. What a difference a bit of literacy makes! Now when I look back at the 80s I see what an incredibly innocent time it was. Yes, of course, there were always subterranean forces at play–always are–but the subtext, references, and insults laid on Islam in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen would have to be buried much deeper if a remake were done today.

And for the record, whatever the Redgreen literacy I have today I owe in large part to VTB.

  6. Talk about a depressing set of videos. I live in the NYC area and I swear 1/2 of us walked around like zombies for several months. I attended 5 funerals and couldn’t stand to watch the news that always seemed to end with the smoldering hole in Manhattan.
If you really want the trifecta, post a video of the anthrax attacks that followed shortly after.

    • We had a couple big memorial services here. I don’t think there were any remains identified at the time.
Later there were several religious services: Cantor-Fitzgerald, Akamai, so many personal losses to the community. It’s all a blur – was there anything to bury?

        • You’re right, but it’s hard not to at this time of year. We remember them at my synagogue late afternoon on Yom Kippur. That’s the formal mourning service for those whose parents have passed. We’ve included the members of the congregation lost – as family.

  7. About the full version of the movie: I’d rent it, but google is not getting a cent from me so I’ll find it elsewhere.
