  1. Turkey’s economy looks like it’s headed for a big crash

It’s pretty simple. Turkey has and continues to borrow a lot of dollars that are getting harder to pay back now that its currency is falling fast. Or, more specifically, its banks and companies have. But, in any case, the fact that its government hasn’t built up a big rainy-day fund of dollars has left it with a catch?22: Turkey can either try to save its economy from the effects of a weaker currency by increasing interest rates, or from the effects of higher interest rates by allowing its currency to continue dropping.

    • Turkey, China, South America and various European nations which will be the first diamino to fall?

      • If we can get the price of oil back into the $40 a barrel range that won’t be a very good guarantee. My contact in the oil industry (got lucky and made a new one after the old one died) says that he doesn’t know where the news sources are getting the $70 a barrel price, everyone he knows (and that is just about everyone) is paying $40 a barrel for oil pumped in the US and $45 a barrel for oil from overseas.

While that is not necessarily guaranteed, one sure thing is that uninformed citizens won’t change the direction of the world (except in very negative ways … Communist China, anyone?)

  3. In rebuke of Dianne Feinstein, Kevin de León wins endorsement of California Democrats in Senate race

California Democratic Party leaders took a step to the left Saturday night, endorsing liberal state lawmaker Kevin de León for Senate in a stinging rebuke of Democratic icon Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

De León’s victory reflected the increasing strength of the state party’s liberal activist core, which was energized by the election of Republican President Trump.

The endorsement was an embarrassment for Feinstein, who is running for a fifth full term, and indicates that Democratic activists in California have soured on her reputation for pragmatism and deference to bipartisanship as Trump and a Republican-led Congress are attacking Democratic priorities on immigration, healthcare and environmental protections.

De León, a former state Senate leader from Los Angeles, received 65% of the vote of about 330 members of the state party’s executive board — more than the 60% needed to secure the endorsement. Feinstein, who pleaded with party leaders meeting in Oakland this weekend not to endorse any candidate, received 7%, and 28% voted for “no endorsement.”

    • The thing to remember about this vote is that the man they are supporting makes DiFi look like a moderate. The Dems are moving far to the left and are going to be very upset when they lose because people don’t want radical leftist politics.

      • The thing to remember about this vote is that the man they are supporting makes DiFi look like a moderate.

No greenhorn pol like De León could possibly do the sort of damage that DiFi (and her corrupt husband) have done to the Bay Area or California. She, almost single-handedly, was responsible for halting the home-porting of the USS Missouri (BB-63) in San Francisco. For that alone I will never forgive her.

This is my Toilet Theory of Politics™. Vote someone in for a single term and then flush the toilet. No politician should ever get a second term unless they can palpably demonstrate a strict adherence to the US Constitution.

Don’t respect the Constitution? Kaflush. Rinse and repeat.

        • I like the total if 12 years in Congress with something similar for the unelected bureaucrats.

          • I like the total if 12 years in Congress with something similar for the unelected bureaucrats.

Way too much time to do way too much damage.

America needs federal term limits and federally funded elections. It is one way to quickly drain the swamp.

The unelected bureaucrats are another matter but there still needs to be a close watch kept on them as well.

            • Term limits yes federal funding no, that will lead to bureaucrats deciding which candidate gets the money to win.

            • First return the Senate to being the States House to protect the rights of the States. Then remove the limits on how much anyone person can give. It is much easier for a politician to tell one person (no matter how much they donate) that they can’t do what they want then to tell everyone who is donating to a political action committee they can’t do what they want. The first is going to cost them some money and one vote, the latter is going to cost them money and a lot of votes.

        • I think that we should use the ancient greek method, that after ones term of office is over they automatically stand trial, then if anyone has a complaint it is answered at once, rather than allowing them to damage us and slink off without any come back.

  4. Trump Envoy Warns UK to Treat Jailed Robinson ‘Sympathetically’ – Reports (sputniknews, Jul 15, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201807151066366632-us-envoy-lobby-robinson/

“The co-founder of the right-wing English Defence League, Tommy Robinson, has been sentenced for violating a law on courtroom reporting after streaming outside a closed criminal trial.

US Ambassador for International Religious Freedom and former Senator Sam Brownback has raised the issue of English Defence League (EDL) co-founder Tommy Robinson’s imprisonment in talks with Sir Kim Darroch, the UK’s ambassador to the US, Reuters reported on July 14. The news agency cited an anonymous British official and two other anonymous sources close to the organizers of the protests in London in support of freeing Robinson.

According to Reuters, Brownback expressed concern at how Robinson’s case has been handled, allegedly warning the UK envoy that if the EDL co-founder isn’t treated “sympathetically,” Trump’s administration could criticize the UK government in regards to its handling of the case. Neither Brownback, nor Darroch have commented on the news, while a US State Department spokesman has said that the sources’ information is “completely false,” according to Reuters, but failed to provide further details…”

  5. Richard: It looks like Trump has some allies in his attempt to drain the swamp/sewer. This is going to put pressure on the Swamp/sewer rats in Congress. If they vote for the impeachment they are pissing off the other Deepstate critters but if they don’t they are going to piss off the voters. Things are looking up in the effort to bring honesty back to the DOJ. Last night I was talking to a retired cop and ask him that if he was in court listening to a FBI agent testifying on a case would he believe the agent. He said no he wouldn’t be able to believe any FBI agent because of Comey and Strozk.

Rosenstein not smiling anymore after House Republican’s spotted with his impeachment docs

Two House Republicans are seeking to file impeachment documents against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein as early as Monday, according to Capitol Hill sources who spoke with Politico.

Reps. Jim Jordan and Mark Meadows, both members of the House Freedom Caucus, take issue with both the deputy attorney general’s poor handling of the Russia investigation and his lack of transparency.

Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s scandal-plagued probe into alleged Russian collusion and was the official who named the FBI veteran to lead the probe last year, has repeatedly stonewalled requests from congressional Republicans for access to documents pertaining to the investigation.

Rosenstein has also made brazen attempts to protect FBI agent Peter Strzok, a former Mueller team member who’s been outed as a virulently anti-Trump zealot.

The attorney AG was grilled by Jordan during a heated congressional hearing held late last month.

  6. My deal is the only Brexit deal – wreck it at your peril: THERESA MAY’s steely warning to Tory rebels AND those bully boys from Brussels

Our Brexit deal for Britain seizes the moment to deliver the democratic decision of the British people and secure a bright new future for our country outside the European Union.

It restores our national sovereignty, so that it is our Government that decides who comes into our country, our Parliaments that make our laws and our courts that enforce them.

It puts an end to the vast membership subscriptions we pay to Brussels, delivering a Brexit dividend to support domestic priorities like our long-term plan for the NHS.

It grasps the opportunities of an independent trade policy, freeing us to forge new trade deals with allies across the world – including America, where President Trump has made it clear he wants a trade deal and is now confident we will be able to do it.

And it enables us to build the new economic and security partnerships we want to see with the European Union. Because Brexit isn’t about trading with other countries instead of trading with Europe, it is about doing both.

THERESA May has finally revealed the explosive Brexit advice Donald Trump gave to her – to sue the EU.

The Prime Minister said the US President told her not to even enter into a negotiation with Brussels at all, and just to start a legal war instead.

She made the startling revelation while speaking to the BBC this morning, but said she did not take Mr Trump’s “brutal” suggestion on board.

Appearing on The Andrew Marr Show, the PM said: “He told me I should sue the EU.”

Pressed further on what the American leader meant, she added: “Sue the EU, not go into a negotiation but sue them.”

At a joint press conference on Friday, neither Mrs May or Mr Trump had divulged the contents of their conversation on how to deal with the UK’s exit from the trading bloc.

  8. Cuban reforms stress free market, private property and investment

Havana (AFP) – Socialist Cuba is planning a series of potentially far-reaching changes, with a new constitution set to recognize the free market and private property, while dividing political powers between a president and a prime minister.

In a reform of the island nation’s 1976 constitution expected to be quickly approved, the fundamental means of production will remain under central control, but foreign investment will be recognized as an important spur to development, according to details of the document published Saturday by the official newspaper Granma.

But the Communist Party will remain “the superior leading force of society and of the state.”

The proposed changes come as 58-year-old Miguel Diaz-Canel, a former

  9. Pentagon: China Spying On Major U.S.-led Military Exercises After Being Disinvited

The Pentagon is accusing China of spying on U.S.-led military exercises near Hawaii.

Navy officials confirmed the U.S. Pacific Fleet is monitoring a Chinese surveillance ship, in a statement to CNN.

It’s located just outside of U.S. territorial seas.

This comes after Beijing was disinvited from the exercises back in May, over its aggression in the South China Sea.

U.S. officials say they expect the Chinese vessel to stay put and don’t anticipate any disruption to the on-going exercises.

The exercises are held every two years and feature around 25 thousand personnel from over 20 countries.

  11. Demonizing policy differences: Does it take a Russian conspiracy to make policy that you don’t like?
    By J.E. Dyer July 15, 2018

Chuck Ross had a very useful article for the Daily Caller News Foundation this past week in which he recounted three recent instances of journalists giving source information to the Justice Department and FBI.

As Ross suggests, the trend is unusual and definitely worth noting. Two of the instances are pretty well known at this point: David Corn giving the Steele dossier to the FBI, and a handful of AP reporters giving the FBI specifics on evidence about Paul Manafort.

The third instance is not as well known, however. And it bears examination – not so much because independent blogger Marcy Wheeler outed a source to the FBI, as because of the reason she cited for doing so.

Wheeler, who operates the blog emptywheel (occasionally cited in my posts here at LU), wrote on 3 July about her decision in 2017 to provide “information on a person whom [she] had come to believe had played a significant role in the Russian election attack on the US.” Apparently the person was in text correspondence with her in 2016.

  12. According to ICE, San Diego chainsaw attacker is illegal alien who has been deported 11 times
By Daily Caller News Foundation July 14, 2018

A California man who allegedly attacked his wife with a chainsaw is an illegal alien who has been deported at least 11 times since 2005, immigration officials confirmed Friday.

Alejandro Alvarez Villegas, 32, was arrested Thursday in Chula Vista, Calif., a suburb of San Diego, on allegations that he tried to kill his wife with a chainsaw in front of their three children.

Alvarez has a long record of being deported and returning to the U.S., according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Department of Homeland Security databases indicate Mr. Alvarez-Villegas is a serial immigration violator who has been removed from the United States 11 times since 2005,” an ICE spokesperson said, according to NBC 7 San Diego.

  13. CNN commentator: Maxine Waters could be 2020 Democratic Party nominee for president
By Howard Portnoy July 14, 2018

Don’t bother with the “take a drug test” and “blow into a breathalyzer” shtick. CNN commentator John Phillips is a step ahead of you, acknowledging in his column in the Los Angeles Daily News that the nomination of Rep. Maxine Waters as the 2020 Democratic nominee for president is a super-long shot.

“How,” he asks, “is it possible that a radical congresswoman, who was just called ‘un-American’ by the leadership of her own party for encouraging viral confrontations with Trump administration officials, could win the presidential nomination of a major American political party?”

In the next sentence, he answers his own question, at least to his satisfaction: “It’s easy. Mad Max is the only one dancing to the beat of the ‘Resistance,’ and her album is about to go platinum.”

He never explains the final analogy in that tortured extended metaphor. (He does go into a lengthy disquisition on Michael Jackson and Prince, which I will skip over in the interests of staying on-topic.)

But what is his rationale for his admittedly outrageous prediction? It’s that Waters has “the right stuff” that positions her to follow the same path that led primary candidate Donald Trump to the Republican nomination.

First of all, she is coarse, like Trump — a property which those who impute it to Trump claim was an ingredient in his success. One of her favorite targets is Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, whom she has called an “educated fool” and whose “ass” she has threatened to “take apart.” But “[s]ince she gets their beat,” writes Phillips, liberals “don’t care if her lyrics are profane or off key.”

Second, Trump rose to prominence among the field of GOP candidates by vowing to undo all the damage done by Barack Obama in his “fundamental transformation” of the country. In making this pledge, Trump addressed the anger, frustration, and rage of many voters in our center-right nation. Apropos of this, Phillips asserts, no one “on the Democratic side of the aisle … has better expressed the anger, frustration and rage of the ‘Resistance’ better [sic] than Maxine Waters.”

Even if one concedes that Waters is the most passionate guidon bearer for the amorphous “Resistance,” there are fundamental differences between her and Donald Trump that John Phillips is overlooking.

One is their comparative economic acumen. Trump, with some flubs, has been an inordinately successful real estate mogul. While he has run a vast business empire, about the only thing Maxine Waters has run is the congressional district in Los Angeles that has reelected her for the past 28 years — and that she has run into the ground.

Another is their comparative age. Waters will turn 80 this coming August — and it shows. In another of her tirades against Ben Carson, she referred to him as a “white-wing nationalist,” one of many recent occasions where she has tripped over her words. Another, and this may have been out-and-out ignorance, occurred in June of 2017 when she bemoaned the fact that 700 billion Kentuckians would lose their health care coverage if Obamacare were repealed and replaced.

Currently, the Democrats are desperately in search of a message. Efforts to beat Donald Trump at his own game have failed, and so has their attempts at kindling enthusiasm for impeachment. When the party does get around to choosing a nominee to up against the incumbent in 2020, it’s not likely they’re going to select an aging relic like Maxine Waters, no matter how loud or profane she gets.

    • CNN commentator: Maxine Waters could be 2020 Democratic Party nominee for president

Few things could better guarantee Trump’s reelection.

This superannuated hag has all the charm of a cobra and all the ideology of Hillary.

If this is all the Dems have to offer, they’re farking doomed … DOOMED, I tells yez.

      • Looking at the people who are being considered as the next Dem to run for Pres there isn’t one that stands a chance against Trump.

        • Looking at the people who are being considered as the next Dem to run for Pres there isn’t one that stands a chance against Trump.

          Thank goodness for small mercies!

There’s another, secondary, effect in that some of the most viable Dem candidates will refuse to take the field against Trump—because it will empty their campaign funding coffers, burn political capital, and still not get them anywhere.

Many of these “more qualified” candidates would rather wait until Trump is out of office before trying to make a run at the White House. Therefore, a vital top tier of “talent” is out of the running (so to speak), which means the Dems will be stuck with a bunch of second-rank wannabes.

If the Dems are stupid enough to allow Mad Max anywhere near a microphone at any of the conventions, they may as well just fall on their swords and get it over with.

          • You got that right. Another good thing about the top tiered people not running is that the ones that do run won’t have any coat tails to take people into Congress. I think the swing to the far left is going to let the Repubs win seats in November but I also think that without a strong Candidate in 2020 they will lose a lot of seats in Congress. If we can get good people to run and win in November, 2020 and 2022 we stand a chance of change the attitude of Congress for a decade or more.

            • Another good thing about the top tiered people not running is that the ones that do run won’t have any coat tails to take people into Congress.

Excellent point, Richard! When, whatever Dem front-runner cannot cough up the political ducats for a coterie, then look for the sparks to fly (i.e., cannibalism). Yust ask Hillawry!”

And, as with how, “Crowley declines to back Pelosi for speaker” (see today’s Readers Link’s), this is pure “Mad Max” strategy (movie, not SoCal lunatic). Eh?

  14. Moroccan navy rescues 78 illegal migrants off northern coast (xinhuanet, Jul 15, 2018)
    http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2018-07/15/c_137326167.htm

“The Moroccan navy have rescued 78 illegal sub-Saharan African migrants off the kingdom’s northern coast, local media reported on Sunday.

According to Le360.ma news site, the Moroccan navy intercepted the migrants’ boat while it got into trouble en route to the Spanish coast.

After receiving the necessary care, the migrants were transferred to the port of Zahta in the northern city of Ksar el-Kebir, and were handed over to the competent security authorities to take legal actions against them.

In other separate operations, some 162 suspected illegal migrants were arrested in several cities while they were trying to embark on boats to Spain.

After years of surge in the Libyan-Italian route, migration attempts to Europe via the Moroccan-Spanish route has witnessed a drastic hike during the recent months.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 15,426 reached Spain by sea from January to July this year, compared to only 6,513 migrants during the same period a year earlier and 8,100 during the whole year of 2016.

In 2017, Morocco’s Interior Ministry said that security forces arrested some 50,000 migrants and dismantled over 70 organized illegal migration networks.”

    https://beta.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-turkeys-erdogan-consolidates-power-with-decrees-reshaping/

“Turkey issued presidential decrees on Sunday reshaping key political, military and bureaucratic institutions as part of the transformation to a powerful executive presidency triggered by last month’s election.

President Tayyip Erdogan was sworn in on Monday under the new system and now holds sweeping powers, allowing him to issue decrees on executive matters and appoint and remove senior civil servants.

Erdogan has said the powerful executive presidency is vital to make government more efficient, drive economic growth and ensure security. Critics decry what they say is increasing authoritarianism and a push toward one-man rule.

Among the latest changes, the General Staff was brought under the authority of the defence minister, according to state-run Anadolu news agency, a move following Erdogan’s appointment of military commander Hulusi Akar as defence minister.

In total, the country’s Official Gazette published seven decrees affecting many state institutions, including the secretariat of the National Security Council, the Defence Industry Directorate and the State Supervisory Council.

The changes coincide with the second anniversary of an attempted coup during which at least 250 people were killed, many of them unarmed civilians, when rogue soldiers attempted to topple Erdogan’s government.

A state of emergency was imposed after the failed putsch on July 15, 2016 and is set to expire this week.

Erdogan’s AK Party and its nationalist ally plan to introduce security regulations to ensure the “fight against terrorism” will continue after emergency rule ends, two sources told Reuters.”

The U.N. mission in Afghanistan said the number — 1,692 killed in violence — is the highest 6-month death toll since the systematic documentation of civilian casualties started in 2009.

In its report, UNAMA said 3,430 Afghan civilians were wounded in the January-June period. The killed and wounded add up to a total of 5,122 civilian casualties, which is a 3 percent overall decrease from the first six months of 2017.

“The French Suicide” (“Le suicide français”) is a book published by the author Éric Zemmour in October 2014. Just one year later, on November 13, 2015 in Paris, a horror took place at the Bataclan Theater, when three terrorists fired into the crowd during a concert, murdered 130 people, and injured 413. Some of the victims had been tortured.

The French population reacted as usual: shock and horror quickly gave way to resignation and submission. Flowers, candles and teddy bears were placed at the scene of the attacks. The government promised to act, but did almost nothing. A ceremony was organized that ended with a song that said, “When All You Have is Love”.

A parliamentary commission of inquiry drafted a report. Military forces, deployed in the streets before the attacks, were reinforced. A climate of resignation and submission reigned.

European, American, and Middle Eastern leaders, as well as many other influential people participated, including former Canadian foreign minister John Baird and other international leaders.

Suddenly, according to Reuters, an Iranian diplomat, along with six other individuals, was arrested in Europe over a plot to commit a terrorist attack at that rally.

First of all, please imagine the plot these men had in mind for their terrorist attack; it parallels so many other attacks that have occurred. If those men had been successful in this attack, many more people, including international leaders, could have been injured or killed.

Secondly, the Islamist state of Iran apparently orchestrated the attack with the intent to kill. Should this not this plan, even though it was aborted, be considered an act of terrorism and war against other nations and governments? Should this planned attack not urge European leaders to stop their policies of appeasement policies toward the Islamic Republic of Iran?

  21. Why Khamenei Can’t Do a Kim Jong-Un

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12700/iran-khamenei

The other day in Tehran, the arrival at the International Airport of a US-registered passenger plane triggered an avalanche of rumors that, for a brief moment, buried the anxieties that grip Iranians with regard to the looming confrontation with the Trump administration in Washington. The wildest, and most popular, rumor was that the “American plane” had brought a special emissary from Washington to invite the “Supreme Guide” Ali Khamenei to a summit with President Donald Trump with a view to “doing a North Korea”.

The rumor wasn’t all that fanciful.

The history of relations between the US and the mullahs is full of cloak-and-dagger episodes.

President Jimmy Carter wrote flattering letters to Khomeini, the man who created the Islamic Republic. In response Khomeini sent Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan to reassure Carter and persuade him to resume the supply of arms to Iran. President Ronald Reagan sent his former National Security Adviser Robert MacFarlane to Tehran to discuss a deal with the ayatollah. And Khamenei visited the occupied US Embassy in Tehran to discuss the purchase of American arms with US diplomats held hostage.

Under Reagan, with help from Israel, the US smuggled arms to Iran to stop Saddam Hussein’s army.

  22. Democrats Could Not Be More Obvious in Their Efforts to Obstruct Justice

Democrats in the House of Representatives could not make their motivations any more apparent and obvious. They made a mockery not only of congressional oversight on Thursday, but of their own party. They can only take delight in the fact that very few Americans actually watch C-SPAN, because otherwise this shameful display of obstructionism would turn off independents, moderate Democrats, and patriots from sea to shining sea. In case we’re not being clear enough, every Democrat member of the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees should be ASHAMED of themselves for the way they behaved on this day.

  26. EU’s hailed migrant plan ‘a ROAD TO HELL’ Czech Republic REFUSES involvement (express, Jul 15, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/989202/eu-migrant-crisis-italy-news-germany-merkel-czech-republic

“The CZECH Republic has refused to take any of the 450 migrants that Italy helped to rescue from an overcrowded migrant boat from the Mediterranean on Saturday, and branded Rome’s shared responsibility plan as “a road to hell”.

The CZECH Republic has refused to take any of the 450 migrants that Italy rescued from an overcrowded migrant boat from the Mediterranean on Saturday, and branded Rome’s shared responsibility plan as “a road to hell”.

Italy refused to accept all 450 migrants to its shores after the rescue, in the EU’s first test of its new migrant policy, which sees members share the burden of migrant numbers.

The EU made the new policy last month after Italy’s new hardline government refused to accept charity migrant rescue boat Aquarius to dock in its ports. Nearby Malta also refused, and the stranded vessel was forced to make a four day journey to Valencia in Spain.

Although Germany, France and Malta all said they would take in 50 migrants each rescued from the Libyan ship, the Czech Republic – part of the notorious Visegrad Four rebellion group comprised of Eastern European member states – would not accept any of the 450 migrants.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis tweeted his country would not accept them, damning Rome’s contingency plan as a “road to hell”.

He tweeted: “I received a copy of the letter from Prime Minister Contes, together with the other EU premieres, to the President of the European Council, Tusk and the European Commission Juncker, where the Italian Prime Minister is asking the EU to take care of the 450 people currently on the seas. Such an approach is the road to hell.

It only motivates smugglers and increases their income. Our countries will not accept any migrants. At the European Council, we have applied the principle of volunteering for relocation, and we will stick to it.”

Continuing, he tweeted: “The only solution to the migration crisis is the Australian model, not to allow the landing of migrants in Europe and the return of the ships from which they emerge. We must send a clear signal that illegal migration has ended and that the European Union is ready to return illegal migrants immediately.

“We must help migrants in the countries from where they come, outside the borders of Europe, so that they can not go on their journey at all. There is no solution to accepting people, on the contrary it increases the problem that we have in Europe.”…”

Turks in Cologne and Stuttgart rallied on Sunday to mark the second anniversary of the failed coup in Turkey.

The protesters exhibited Turkish flags while chanting slogans in support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In Cologne, an exhibition of images from the coup was also set up.

Meanwhile in Stuttgart, some 200 Kurdish protesters organised a counter-rally, displaying numerous flags and banners, such as “No go for right-wing incitement and inhuman propaganda.”

Some 250 people died and 2,196 were wounded fighting the coup attempt on July 15, 2016. The government declared a state of emergency following the attack, arresting more than 50,000 people.

On Wednesday, Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro and his attorney, Kurt Schlichter, had reason to celebrate their victory in court on a free speech issue: the appeal filed by Ahmed Mohamed, aka “Clock Boy,” to reverse a lower court’s ruling that ruled for Shapiro was completely dismissed.

To recapitulate the case, as the court reported, Ahmed Mohammed was a Muslim and a United States citizen who emigrated with his father from Sudan to reside in Irving, Texas. On September 14, 2015, Mohammed was 13 and in his freshman year of high school when he brought a homemade alarm clock to his school and showed it to a teacher, who took it from him and contacted a school resource officer.

    • Clock Boy was a setup from end to end. His father is a professional troublemaker.

  32. Justice And DHS Claim Nearly Half Of Children 5 Or Younger Separated At The Border Came With Adults Who Were Criminals Or Not Even Their Parents

On Thursday, the Trump administration announced that almost half of the children who were five years old or younger and separated from adults at the U.S. border couldn’t be reunited with them because many of the adults were violent criminals, and some of the adults weren’t even the children’s parents.

According to the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, 46 of the 103 children are “ineligible” to be reunited with the adults. The departments added that 11 of the adults have serious criminal histories, some of which include charges for child cruelty, kidnaping, murder, human smuggling, domestic violence and narcotics-related crime. One man is wanted for murder in Guatemala, according to Chris Meekins, Chief of Staff, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the Department of Health and Human Services; seven others were “determined not to be a parent” at all, three of whom were found out through DNA testing.

  33. Italy: Coastguards bring migrant women, children seeking medical help to Pozzallo shore

The Italian coastguards brought to shore 16 migrant mothers and 11 children in Pozzallo on Sunday, who were reportedly in need of medical attention.

The rescuees were extracted from larger coastguard ships, stranded off shore with some 450 migrants on board, who were rescued close to Linosa on Friday.

“We know that on board there are children, adolescents and vulnerable persons, which have been at sea for days, under the sun, and which have a difficult journey on their backs, meaning they have experienced different forms of suffering,” said a member of a rescue organisation.

“We demand the immediate authorisation for them to disembark [on the shore], in particular and above all the children and the most vulnerable people, and that every type of assistance is guaranteed for them,” she added.

  36. Austrian president criticises government’s asylum proposals (thelocal, Jul 15, 2018)
    https://www.thelocal.at/20180715/austrian-president-criticises-governments-asylum-proposals

“Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen used an interview published on Saturday to criticise proposals put forward by the government to make it impossible to claim asylum on European soil.

“Whoever comes to our country and applies for asylum should be able to do so,” Van der Bellen said in an interview with the Österreich newspaper, adding that those facing persecution had a right to protection under the Geneva Convention.

Austria’s conservative-far right government is using its current presidency of the EU to put forward its own hardline positions on migration and asylum policy, and has formed a controversial “axis of the willing” with like-minded ministers in Berlin and Rome on the issue.

While saying the question of migration was “significant”, Van der Bellen added: “At the moment, the number of those seeking asylum is falling markedly, the situation is under control.”

As for the possibility of “holding centres” in North Africa to process migrants, Van der Bellen said he saw “many unanswered questions”.

“Most importantly, no country has said it is willing to host them. Our focus should be on addressing the reasons why people flee,” he went on.

He also expressed scepticism as to whether the Austrian armed forces had the capacity to carry out missions in North Africa supporting the EU border agency Frontex, as suggested by Interior Minister Herbert Kickl and Defence Minister Mario Kunasek, both from the far-right FPÖ.

Van der Bellen also spoke out against the possible criminalisation of those who save migrants from drowning in the Mediterranean.

“When someone saves a small child who’s fallen into the Danube from drowning, we celebrate them as having saved a life. When the same person saves a child from drowning in the Mediterranean, they’ve also saved a life and they shouldn’t be brought before a court,” he said.

The post of president is largely ceremonial in Austria but Van der Bellen has criticised several positions taken by the government since it took office late last year.

Van der Bellen is a former leader of the Green party who defeated far-right candidate Norbert Hofer to become president in 2016.”

  37. Spain saves over 340 migrants at sea, one on truck tyre (thelocal, Jul 15, 2018)
    https://www.thelocal.es/20180715/spain-saves-over-340-migrants-at-sea-one-on-truck-tyre

“Spanish rescuers saved more than 340 migrants in the Mediterranean on Saturday, including one person from north Africa who was attempting the crossing on board a truck tyre, they said.

Salvamento Maritimo, Spain’s coastguards, said their ships had rescued 240 people spread out in 12 boats, 10 of them in the Strait of Gibraltar and two others in the Alboran Sea, and on the truck tyre.

A spokesman added that the Guardia Civil police force had also saved more than 100 migrants in the Mediterranean.

Spain is set to overtake Italy as the country of choice for migrants trying to reach Europe.

Some 16,902 people have arrived in Spain so far this year, the International Organization for Migration’s most recent figures show, and a further 294 died in the attempt.

All in all, more than 1,400 migrants have lost their lives in the Mediterranean this year, they add.

Last month, Spain also agreed to take in 630 migrants who arrived aboard three vessels, including the French NGO rescue ship Aquarius.

The Aquarius rescued the migrants off Libya’s coast on June 9th but Italy’s new populist government and Malta both refused to let it dock, triggering an international outcry before Spain stepped in to help.

Then on July 4, a ship belonging to Spanish NGO Proactiva Open Arms docked in Barcelona with 60 migrants rescued off the Libyan coast on board after Italy refused to take them in.

Faced with growing tensions in the EU over the issue, member states struck a deal in late June to stem the arrival of migrants.

The accord includes the setting up of secure centres for migrants in the bloc, “disembarkation platforms” outside the bloc and sharing out refugees among member states.”

  39. Looters, violence and road accidents tarnish French World Cup party (thelocal, Jul 15, 2018)
    https://www.thelocal.fr/20180715/looters-clashes-with-police-and-road-accidents-mar-french-world-cup-party

“France erupted in joy after winning the World Cup on Sunday but scenes of joy turned to violence on the Champs Elysees in Paris where youths looted a store and clashed with police. At least two men died in accidents during the celebrations.

Fans poured into the streets across the country after the country’s second World Cup win, many waving flags and letting off smoke bombs.

Some 4,000 police and security forces have been deployed across Paris during the World Cup festivities, and a vast security perimeter prohibiting
vehicle access has been set up around the Champs Elysees avenue.

Dozens of youths shattered windows at a popular store on the Champs Elysees avenue Sunday while hundreds of thousands of fans celebrated France’s World Cup victory, according to an AFP journalist at the scene.

About 30 people, many wearing ski masks, broke into the Publicis Drugstore and later left with bottles of wine and champagne, some smiling and filming themselves with cellphones.

Some also threw objects at police forces who responded with tear gas.

“That’s not how you celebrate,” a tearful bystander wearing a French team jersey said.

Following the looting TV images showed youths and riot police clashing on the Champs Elysées as the presenter talked of the party being ruined.

Shortly before midnight riot police tried to evacuate the Champs Elysées which led to more clashes with youths hurling bottles and rocks at police who responded with water canon and tear gas.

Elsewhere in France, authorities said clashes erupted in the southern city of Lyon between police and about 100 youths who had climbed on top of a police vehicle at an open-air showing of the match in the city centre.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the youths who responded by throwing objects and setting rubbish bins on fire.

No arrests had been announced but clashes were continuing at around 10:30 pm (2030 GMT) on a bridge as a group of about 50 youths tried to break through police barricades to reach the city centre.

In Frouard, a town outside the eastern city of Nancy, a three-year-old boy and two six-year-old girls were seriously injured after being struck by a
    motorcycle during the celebrations.

Authorities said the motorcyclist had fled the scene.

In the southeast city of Annecy police said a 50-year-old man died after breaking his neck when he jumped into a shallow canal just when the final
whistle blew to signal the end of the match.

And a man in his thirties died after crashing into a tree while celebrating shortly after the game in the small town of Saint-Felix in northern France.”

  41. “Soros network still pulling EU’s strings”

Migration and Brussels’ “pro-migration policy” continue to be a threat to member states, despite the growing number of states, heads of government and citizens voicing objections to them, the ruling Fidesz party’s parliamentary spokesman told a press conference on Sunday. Another pro-government lawmaker was accusing the European Parliament of serving George Soros’s interests.

Janos Halasz commented on a statement released by Dunja Mijatovic, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, on Thursday, saying that EU states should “put the human rights of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, as well as the principle of responsibility sharing, at the centre of their migration and asylum policies”.

Mijatovic said that reception spots for migrants within or outside the EU should operate with “a clear procedure … to ensure durable solutions, including resettlement, for those in need of protection, as well as safe returns for those who do not, to avoid overcrowding and disembarked persons being left in a situation of prolonged uncertainty”.

Halasz said EU organisations “under the influence of George Soros” kept forcing pro-migration policies. The statement shows clearly that Mijatovic “dances to Soros’s tune as did her predecessor,” he said. “Soros really seems to have his people everywhere … who insist on flooding Europe with migrants, the European public opinion notwithstanding,” he added.

Hungary’s ruling parties believe that “the Soros network is still pulling the strings in the European Parliament,” the parliamentary spokesman of the Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance said on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference, Istvan Hollik noted that the EP on Thursday adopted a non-legislative resolution saying that NGOs offering humanitarian assistance to migrants should not be punished for their actions by member states. Hollik said this “clearly shows that George Soros’s network is pulling the strings in the EP”.

He said the resolution was backed by “Soros’s allies in Brussels” and welcomed in a joint letter by sixty MEPs immediately after its adoption. Among the letter’s signatories were “the author of the Soros report attacking Hungary”, Green MEP Judith Sargentini, the Democratic Coalition’s Peter Niedermueller and Parbeszed’s Benedek Javor, he added.

Hollik said the resolution was almost identical to the goals of “the Soros network’s international pro-migrant campaign”, Welcoming Europe. He said the resolution sought to legalise migration and make it a fundamental right and prevent member states from being able to penalise organisations supporting it.

The politician said this was how the EP was looking to “launder the pro-migration Soros network”.

Given that illegal migration is a crime, so is organising and supporting it, Hollik said. He said this was why the Hungarian parliament had passed the “Stop Soros” package of laws. Hungary will stand by that legislation even if Soros and his allies in Brussels “launch another attack” against it, he added.
