  1. Far-right groups protest refugee arrivals in Montreal

A heavy police presence was on hand for the demonstration by far-right groups. Meanwhile, a pro-refugee caravan is on its way to St-Bernard-de-Lacolle

Far-right protesters gathered Sunday in front of Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s offices at the corner of St-Antoine and Peel Sts. in downtown Montreal.

About 200 members of the groups La Meute and Storm Alliance demonstrated on St-Antoine St. after exiting from the building at 1000 de La Gauchetière a little after 1 p.m., shouting slogans and uttering wolf howls.

A large police presence was on hand for the event and St. Antoine Street was closed between Mansfield and Peel Sts.

The demonstration was to protest against refugee claimants who cross the Canadian border by a back road.

The organizations denounced the migrants as “illegal”, even though they are not deemed to be so under the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Left-wing, pro-refugee groups plan to demonstrate in Valois Park in Montreal’s east-end on Sunday afternoon.

In the meantime, a welcome caravan for migrants is expected to arrive in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle, near the American border, on Sunday.

The caravan, which left Montreal on Friday, has been making stops in communities along the way to send the message to migrants that they are welcome in Canada, while sensitizing local residents to the refugees’ plight.

  4. Iran: Regime fires on protesters; 4 reported killed
    Al Arabiya June 30, 2018

[Ed. – Other cities have seen massive street protests in the last week, but the firing incidents in the last day have been in southwestern Iran. A big protest in Khorramshahr is said to have been fired on just a few hours ago, with an unconfirmed report of two dead. Western media are depicting this as the result of sanctions, but these are the same protests we’ve been seeing for months, and the main issue for the protesters is the oppressive regime and its own abusive, exploitative economic policies. Times of Israel has additional info from BBC Persian.]

Iranian security forces have shot and killed at least four protesters after demonstrations erupted for a second day in a row in the southwestern city of Muhammarah, activists told Al Arabiya English.

Videos of the protests have been circulating on social media showing clashes between demonstrators and security forces of the Revolutionary Guards with “death to Khamenei slogans” slogans being heard.

The news of protesters death comes a day after major protests erupted on Friday as thousands of people gathered in Khorramshahr city in front of the city’s central mosque.

The rallies protested against what activists described as a deteriorating economic situation of their city, as well as the lack of support for their towns with slogans being chanted against “regime thieves” being heard.

  6. Is Guilt Killing the West from Within?

    by Giulio Meotti
    July 1, 2018 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12569/guilt-museums-artifacts

A “sense of guilt” for colonialism is debasing the West from within, according to Professor Bruce Gilley, and authoritarian regimes such as Iran, Russia, China and Turkey are profiting from this weakness.

The Romans called it damnatio memoriae: the damnation of memory that resulted in destroying the portraits and even the names of the fallen emperors. The same process is now underway in the West about its colonial past. The cultural elite in the West now seem so haunted by feelings of imperialist guilt that they are no longer confident that our civilization is something to be proud of.

A sense of guilt now seems a kind of post-Christian substitute religion that seduces many Westerners. The French scholar Shmuel Trigano suggested that this ideology is turning the Westerners into “post-colonial subjects” who no longer believe in their own civilization, but instead what will destroy it: multiculturalism. In France, for example, a manifesto was launched for “a multicultural and post racial republic”. The result would be, in the words of the anthropologist Jean-Loup Amselle, a “war of identities” and a clash between communities. Last month, the UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said that, if elected Prime Minister, he would order the British Museum to return to Greece the Elgin Marbles, the frieze that had surrounded the Parthenon of Athens and one of the major attractions of the British Museum. “This whole campaign is sheer lunacy,” wrote Richard Dorment. But it is a lunacy spreading all over Europe.

  7. The Bazaaris’ Revolt in Iran: Who is Behind It?

    by Amir Taheri
    July 1, 2018 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12616/iran-bazaar-revolt

Last week, Tehran’s Grand Bazaar was shut, with its example imitated in the capital’s other business districts such as Maqsud-Shah, Qaysarieh, Khayyam, Sayyed Vali and Pachenar, among others. At the same time, bazaars in several other cities, notably Isfahan, Mash’had, Bandar Abbas, Kerman and Tabriz also organized token strikes in sympathy with Tehrani merchants.

Shutting the Grand Bazaar is not easy and had not happened since the heady days of 1978-79, when the uprising against the Shah was heading for its peak.

The Grand Bazaar consists of over 40 interlinked passages covering a total distance of 10.6 kilometers. The passages are divided into 20 segments, each specializing in some trade, from food-shops, to goldsmith workshops to carpet show-rooms to whatever a mega-city of almost 15 million inhabitants might need.

However, the Grand Bazaar is not just a mega shopping mall; it is the core of a whole way of life.

It contains six mosques, 30 hotels, more than 20 banks, six libraries, nine religious seminaries, 13 primary and secondary schools, two theaters, and a “House of Force” (zurkhaneh) where actual or putative “tough guys” practice traditional wrestling and body-building.

  9. Iraq lawmakers ‘fleeing abroad over fears of corruption charges under incoming government’ (alaraby, Jul 1, 2018)

“Incumbent members of Iraq’s parliament are reportedly fleeing the country en masse out of fears they will be prosecuted on corruption charges after a new parliament is sworn in.

An official at Baghdad International Airport told The New Arab’s Arabic-language service on Sunday about the mass exodus of lawmakers.

“Last week around 45 parliamentarians from various blocs flew out of the county on one-way tickets,” the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said.

“Some have travelled with their families to various countries such as Iran, Turkey, Egypt and other places,” he said, adding they could likely be fleeing before their parliamentary immunity expires…”

“Ten days ago we started to set up a barbed wire security fence with surveillance towers along the border with Syria,” said Anwar Hamid Nayef, spokesman in Iraq’s Anbar province.

The frontier barrier includes a six-metre-wide trench and involves thermal cameras and drones scanning the border for militants attempting to cross from Syria…”

  11. Civilians killed in attack on French counter-terror force in northern Mali (france24, Jul 1, 2018)
    http://www.france24.com/en/20180701-mali-french-soldiers-barkhane-killed-deadly-attack-counter-terror-force-gao-car-bomb

“A bomb-laden car on Sunday rammed into a patrol convoy carrying soldiers belonging to the French counter-terror force Barkhane in the northern Malian city of Gao, killing at least four civilians, officials said.

The Malian defence ministry said that in addition to the deaths, at least 31 people, including eight French soldiers, were injured in the attack near the northern exit of the city.

The ministry had initially said that French soldiers were among the dead, but they later revised that statement. A French army spokesman confirmed that a patrol of around 30 soldiers had come under attack in Gao on Sunday and that there were a number of civilians killed, but would not immediately give more details.

Anonymous sources told Reuters that the car bomb attack had been followed by a near 15-minute long shoot-out between the attackers and the soldiers.

“There are several injured among the French soldiers who were travelling in two vehicles and which were completely destroyed in the explosion. Their base has been evacuated.”

Photos posted on social media showed black smoke billowing from an armoured vehicle surrounded by debris on a sandy road.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack which comes as over 40 African heads of state are meeting for an African Union summit in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott with security high on the agenda.

On Friday, a suicide attack on the Mali headquarters of a regional Sahel force known as G5 killed two soldiers and a civilian.

France has deployed around 4,500 French troops in West Africa’s Sahel region as part of Operation Barkhane aimed at tackling Islamist militants in the region.

The Sahel region with its huge expanse of remote desert is home to several jihadist groups. The area has seen several armed attacks on targets in neighbouring Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast in recent years.

France began a military intervention in Mali in January 2013 to drive out al Qaeda-linked militants who hijacked a rebellion in 2012 by ethnic Tuaregs and attempted to take control of the central government in Bamako.”

  12. London bloodbath: Boy, 14, stabbed ‘multiple times’ rushed to hospital (express, Jul 2, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/982274/london-news-stabbing-teenage-boy-met-police-holloway-finsbury-park

“A 14-YEAR-OLD boy has been stabbed in North London, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed. Police scrambled to the scene at Fairbridge Road near Archway and the boy has been rushed to an east London hospital with multiple stab wounds.

Met Police were called to the scene at around 6.50pm on Sunday to reports of an injured male.

The teenager was discovered with multiple stab wounds and was rushed to a hospital in East London.

The victim is in a serious but stable condition the Metropolitan Police said.

An 11-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, but has since been released and is no longer a suspect in the investigation, the Met said.

In a statement on Sunday night they said: “Following initial enquiries the boy was de-arrested and released from custody.”…”

  13. Moped muggers are inflicting misery to fund party lifestyle (express, Jul 2, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/982319/moped-muggers-sell-stolen-watches-mobile-phones-jewellery-to-pay-for-holidays

“MOPED muggers are using the proceeds of their crimes to fund exotic summer holidays, a security expert said yesterday. They have been selling snatched watches, mobile phones and jewellery to pay for trips to party islands in the Mediterranean.

Peter Williams, who runs private security firm LCS Security, said police had told him that the robbers – typically in their late teens and early 20s – head to the hotspots in July and August.

He said: “Between May, June and July the moped criminals become very active. Then around mid-July it goes quieter. “

A flying squad officer told me they are all in Ibiza, Spain or Ayia Napa in Cyprus partying.

“Then it all starts up again from September in time for Christmas.”

Statistics show the number of robberies using mopeds increases in spring.

There is then a dip in high summer.

Two moped muggers told recently how they were able to holiday in exclusive resorts after netting up to £2,000 a day One, aged 20, said: “The money is for good times. It’s for enjoyment, silliness, to buy yourself stuff and go on holiday.”

The revelation comes as the Daily Express is campaigning to highlight the misery caused by the muggers.

Attacks have soared in recent years. The number of moped-related offences increased from 827 in 2012 to more than 23,000 in 2017.

High-profile victims this year include comedian Michael McIntyre, Home Secretary Sajid Javid and children’s author Annabel Karmel…”

    • Statistics show the number of robberies using mopeds increases in spring.

Here’s a completely rhetorical question. What would happen if Moped collisions and rollovers began increasing in the springtime?

Mightn’t there be a wee decrease in these two-wheeled crimes of opportunity?

      Just askin’…
