Butchers ask for police protection from “violence” by vegan activists

Butchers are angry. In a letter addressed to the Minister of the Interior, Gerard Collomb, they ask for the protection of the police in the face of the attacks of their businesses that they attribute to the anti-sectarian vegan militants. The latter claim to be anti-meat, anti-breeding and oppose any hierarchy between species, especially between humans and animals.

“We are counting on your services and the support of the entire government to stop, as soon as possible, physical , verbal, moral violence ” suffered by the artisan-butchers, indicates a letter dated June 22, signed by President of the French Confederation of Butchers, artisan – Butchers and Delicatessens (CFBCT), Jean-François Guihard.

“Intense media coverage [and propaganda] of vegan lifestyle”
“The 18 000 butchers-butchers” in France “are worried about the consequences of the intense media coverage of vegan lifestyle,” says the official declares “shocked” that part of the population “wants to impose on the vast majority their way of life not to say their ideology “. He deplores the recent “intimidation” that butcheries have been the subject of, a “violence” that is exercised “both uncovered and masked” according to the letter.

In the Hauts-de-France, seven butcher shops were sprinkled with fake blood in April, a butcher shop and a fish shop were vandalized, their windows broken and the facades tagged with the inscription “stop speciesism”. The mayor of Lille, Martine Aubry, said that the town hall will start civil suit. According to the CFBCT, similar attacks “have been reported in the Occitan region” as well.

  4. EU Votes to Punish Hungary for Migrant Policies (breitbart, Jun 25, 2018)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/06/25/eu-votes-to-punish-hungary-for-migrant-policies/

“European Union lawmakers have voted for launching action against Hungary over allegations that Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government is breaching the bloc’s fundamental values.

The European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee voted Monday for a report that recommends triggering an “Article 7 procedure” amid concerns about judicial independence, media freedoms and the harsh treatment of migrants in Hungary. The full assembly must still endorse the move for it to happen.

The procedure could result in Hungary losing EU voting rights, although this is unlikely because Poland, which is also facing Article 7 action launched by the EU’s executive Commission, would probably veto it.

The Commission says it is also scrutinizing laws passed in Hungary last week allowing jail sentences for people convicted of aiding asylum seekers, and which ban homelessness.”

  5. Sikh Shopkeeper Abused for Flying St George’s Flag, Slams Those Who Don’t ‘Enjoy English Culture’ (breitbart, Jun 25, 2018)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/06/25/sikh-shopkeeper-abused-flying-england-flag/

“A patriotic Sikh trader who received abuse for flying the St George’s flag outside his shop in support for England at the World Cup has defiantly promised not to back down.

The shopkeeper and heating and plumbing professional, whose premises are in Ilford, received an anonymous, handwritten letter written in broken English insulting him for backing England, claiming it is wrong as he is of Indian descent.

The shop manager said he loves the World Cup and slammed the person behind the letter, claiming it was from someone who does not “enjoy being part of the English culture”.

The letter, seen by the Ilford Recorder, said the shop should be flying a foreign flag instead and that if neo-Nazi groups saw his patriotic display they would “kick you back to India without your trousers on”.

“You should always look at back ground were [sic] you came from…” the letter added, directing the comment at “Indian people”.

However, the businessman said the letter only made him want to fly the English flag even more proudly…”

  6. Portugal to receive 400 refugees from Egypt (memo, Jun 25, 2018)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20180625-portugal-to-receive-400-refugees-from-egypt/

“Portugal has offered to host 400 refugees of various nationalities that are currently living in Egypt, according to Daily News Egypt.

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the news on Friday; with spokesman Ahmed Abu Zaid stating that the cooperation was the result of the dialogue between Egypt and the EU on migration, and the efforts made by both parties to resettle refugees who are currently in the north African state.

A meeting in Cairo between Egypt and the EU at the end of last year resulted in the creation of a framework on migrant cooperation, which included the recommendation that certain European countries resettle a number of refugees.

Portugal joins the UK, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands as countries that have resettled hundreds of displaced people as part of their cooperation with the programme…”

  7. 86 killed, 50 houses burnt in fresh Nigeria clashes (gulfnrews, Jun 25, 2018)
    https://gulfnews.com/news/africa/nigeria/86-killed-50-houses-burnt-in-fresh-nigeria-clashes-1.2241704

“Nigeria’s presidency has reported “deeply unfortunate killings across a number of communities” on Monday.

Some reports state that 86 people had been killed in fresh clashes, while other media outlets reported up to 120 people killed in central Nigeria in fresh Plateau bloodbath.

Violence in central Nigeria erupted after clashes broke out between farmers and cattle herders, police in Plateau state said.

Some reports say fighting began on Thursday when ethnic Berom farmers attacked Fulani herders, killing five of them.

A retaliatory attack on Saturday led to more deaths. The area has a decades-long history of violence between ethnic groups competing for land.

A curfew has now been imposed in three parts of the state.

State police commissioner Undie Adie said a search of villages following the bloodshed revealed that 86 people had been killed, and six injured.

He said 50 houses had been burned, as well as 15 motorbikes and two vehicles.

The Plateau state government said the curfew would be in place between 18:00 and 06:00 local time (17:00 to 05:00 GMT) in the Riyom, Barikin Ladi and Jos South areas “to avert a breakdown of law and order”.

This region, where the ethnic Fulani herders in the north meet settled farmers in the south, is prone to tension.

It’s not immediately clear why this spike in violence is happening right now.

Nigeria’s president has repeatedly blamed the escalation on an increase in gun-running from Libya.

Others blame security forces’ failures in a country busy fighting two insurgences — Boko Haram in the north and militants in the oil-producing south.

The state’s governor Simon Lalong said work was under way “to secure the affected communities and fish out perpetrators of these crimes”.

“While we pray for God’s guidance through this difficult time, we will do everything humanly possible to secure our state immediately,” he said.”

  8. Turks in Germany praise ‘our leader’ after two-thirds vote for Erdogan (DW, Jun 25, 2018)
    http://www.dw.com/en/turks-in-germany-praise-our-leader-after-two-thirds-vote-for-erdogan/a-44378286

“Support for Erdogan was proportionally higher among the Turkish community in Germany than it was in Turkey. That, alongside celebrations in German cities after Erdogan won the election, has drawn criticism.

Nearly two-thirds of the Turkish community in Germany cast votes for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sunday’s election, far more than the support he averaged in Turkey, according to initial results.

Erdogan supporters waving Turkish flags and chanting slogans reportedly took to the streets in multiple Germany cities to celebrate after the authoritarian ruler claimed victory in the election on Sunday night.

In Berlin, hundreds of Erdogan supporters celebrated in Breitscheidplatz and honking motorcades cruised down Kurfürstendamm avenue. Calls of “Recep Erdogan, our leader” could be heard, local media reported.

German lawmaker and former Greens party co-leader Cem Özdemir, who is of Turkish origin, criticized celebrations in the streets of Berlin…”

The NSA’s Hidden Spy Hubs in Eight U.S. Cities

THE SECRETS ARE hidden behind fortified walls in cities across the United States, inside towering, windowless skyscrapers and fortress-like concrete structures that were built to withstand earthquakes and even nuclear attack.

Thousands of people pass by the buildings each day and rarely give them a second glance, because their function is not publicly known.

They are an integral part of one of the world’s largest telecommunications networks – and they are also linked to a controversial National Security Agency surveillance program.

Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. In each of these cities, The Intercept has identified an AT&T facility containing networking equipment that transports large quantities of internet traffic across the United States and the world.

A body of evidence – including classified NSA documents, public records, and interviews with several former AT&T employees – indicates that the buildings are central to an NSA spying initiative that has for years monitored billions of emails, phone calls, and online chats passing across U.S. territory.
