  1. 5:20 – “You better get ready for it, unless you’re going to take the James Madison view that there shouldn’t be any chaplains in the U.S. armed forces to begin with, or in the prison system. People want to pray, you can’t stop them. But we cannot have state subsidized prayer. We cannot have state subsidized preachers or chaplains.” – Hitchens

That was Madison’s view? I will have to look that up tomorrow. But don’t throw out our Judeo-Christian baby with the bathwater.

“Military chaplaincy has long history in U.S. armed forces”

“There are several stories throughout the museum that show the compassion and the willingness of chaplains to stay with their soldiers. To minister to those soldiers,” she said. “They nurture the living, care for the wounded and they honor the dead.”

Page 14 – The Ideological Fallacies Of Communism – Bishop Sheen. Communism – It legislates for the mass, but it does not impose any individual morality. That is one of the reasons, I think, why some people-not all, God forbid-have an exaggerated interest in social justice, because it dispenses them from individual justice; they begin taking care of everyone else’s problems to cover up their own dark and rotten conscience. Whenever I hear people talk about social justice I always want to find out how much they pay their housekeepers.

      • ‘He was only _given_ two years to live, but lived till he was 76.’
        Such an odd expression.
I always wonder WHO exactly is doing the “giving”…?
        – – Doctors? They can _take_ lives, murderers are a diverse lot, but it doesn’t work the other way.

When someone is diagnosed with a serious disease, then asks, “What are my chances, Doc?”
        – – The only appropriate reply is, “I’m not a bookie.”

I watched a celebrated professor of medicine caught off guard after giving a presentation on his research in vector cardiography. During the question period, someone asked him,
“How do you treat a cold sore, Professor?”
        – – Then I noticed, poor thing, the Prof had a cold sore on his lip.
        – He blushed, then said,
        “With contempt.
        Next?”

      • Hawking’s contributions to the field of physics doesn’t make him an authority on metaphysics.
        There _ain’t_ no such thing.

And his relationship with Israel can be described as weird, at best.

Israeli academic inspired one of Stephen Hawking’s biggest discoveries
Scientist Jacob Bekenstein, who later taught at Hebrew University for 25 years, sparred with preeminent theoretical physicist before they cooperated on black holes

…Today, the entropy of a black hole is called Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, but the radiation emitted from a black hole is called Hawking-Bekenstein radiation, or often just Hawking radiation.

…Some believed Bekenstein, who wore a kippah and won Israel’s prestigious Wolf Prize in 2012, should have won the Nobel Prize for his contributions to science (the prize is not awarded posthumously). But his work and connections to Hawking live on: Hawking said he wanted the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy equation engraved on his tombstone.

        • Hawking showed surprising lack of character when he came out as a UK BDS-hole.

He accepted an Invitation by former Israeli President Shimon Peres, the personification of Oslo and the “peace camp”.
Then he suddenly cancelled, writing in the far-left UK Guardian:

“I accepted the invitation to the Presidential Conference with the intention that this would not only allow me to express my opinion on the prospects for a peace settlement but also because it would allow me to lecture on the West Bank….

“However, I have received a number of emails from Palestinian academics. They are unanimous that I should respect the boycott. In view of this, I must withdraw from the conference. Had I attended, I would have stated my opinion that the policy of the present Israeli government is likely to lead to disaster,” he wrote.

Conference boycotted by Hawking has hosted Palestinian speakers every year
          https://www.timesofisrael.com/conference-boycotted-by-hawking-has-hosted-palestinian-speakers-every-year/
          ……….
          Bizarre. Both shallow and grandiose.
          Emails from “Palestinian academics”?
          His opinions…?
Kind of hypocritical, since for 36 years Hawking’s ability to talk and communicate altogether was thanks to technology created and designed for him in Israel.
