  1. Greece: Hundreds protest against EU migration policy in Lesbos

Hundreds of residents from the Greek island of Lesbos gathered in the city of Mytilene on Thursday to protest against the EU’s migration policy, which sees thousands of refugees and migrants confined to the Greek islands for the length of their asylum process. The protest fell on the day Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was visiting the island for a conference.

Several protesters tried to push over a police bus, reportedly prompting police to fire tear gas in response. No arrests have yet been reported.

Thursday’s protest was part of a general strike across the island, calling for immediate measures in response to the arrival of a high number of refugees and migrants.

The EU-Turkey deal of March 2016 forces asylum seekers arriving on the Greek islands to remain in their place of arrival until their claims are processed.

  2. Hungary PM Orban vows tougher laws on migration, names new deputy PMs

BUDAPEST (Reuters) – After an election victory built on a fierce anti-migrant campaign, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday said his new government would soon bring forward tighter immigration rules.

He also named Interior Minister Sandor Pinter and Economy Minister Mihaly Varga as deputy prime ministers and gave notice he would take a tough stance against the European Union over the bloc’s next budget.

Orban was re-elected in an April landslide that gave his ruling Fidesz party a two-thirds parliamentary majority, enabling it to rewrite major laws.

One of the most vociferous opponents of Muslim immigration into Europe, Orban won a third term in power after his campaign resonated with large swathes of the electorate, particularly in rural areas.

He told public radio that his main political objectives were unchanged.

“We are building a Christian democracy,” Orban said. “An old-style Christian democracy rooted in European traditions, where human dignity is paramount and there is a separation of powers.”

“We will defend Christian culture and will not surrender the country to aliens,” Orban said.

He added that Interior Minister Pinter would be responsible for national security under a revamped structure at the top of his cabinet which would establish a centralised office under Orban that was also in charge of a unified intelligence service.

Economy Minister Varga would serve as a guarantee for financial stability and predictability, Orban said.

Orban also said that, given his new two-thirds majority, he would again put forward a constitutional amendment to bolster national security that failed to go through parliament in 2016.

The bill said that no foreign population from outside Europe could be settled in Hungary and that the application of European Union laws could not infringe its territorial integrity and population make-up.

“I feel obliged to implement this constitutional amendment,” Orban said, referring to his strong parliamentary mandate. He said another law aimed at foreign-backed non-government organisations, dubbed the “Stop Soros” bill, would follow.

Orban has accused non-governmental organisations (NGOs) funded by Budapest-born billionaire George Soros of political meddling and actively supporting migration.

The government said it wanted to ensure greater transparency, but NGOs have said the change stigmatised them.

“George Soros has a shadow army working in Hungary. We would like to bring them to light,” he said. “We would like to make it clear that migration is not a human rights issue, but a national security issue.”

He said any organisation involved in the migration issue would have to seek clearance from national security authorities, while any foreign nationals supporting illegal immigration would be banned from Hungary.

Orban also said he would not support any European Union budget that would provide funding for immigrants, flagging more conflicts with Brussels in the wake of a new proposal to cut funding for some member states.

“This will be a long debate and series of negotiations,” Orban said. “In the end, there will have to be unanimity. Hungarians should not worry. There will be no budget until the Hungarians say it is a go.”

HUNGARY PM: MUSLIM REFUGEES “INVADERS”, SOROS “STATESMAN WITHOUT A STATE”

“With his money, [Soros] supports 60 non-government organizations that support migrants and illegal immigration. This is not about the freedom expression, but national security,” Orban said.

Viktor Orban, Hungarian prime minister and head of the national conservative Fidesz party, called Muslim refugees “invaders” and called Holocaust survivor George Soros a “statesman without a state” during an interview with German newspaper Bild on Tuesday.

Soros was born in Nazi-occupied Budapest in 1930 and survived the Siege of Budapest in 1945.

A July billboard campaign against foreign influence in the country used the image of Soros with the words “Let’s not leave Soros the last laugh.” Some of the posters were glued to the floors of trains, intending on people stepping on his face. The campaign was widely seen as antisemitic.

The prime minister has long faced criticisms of antisemitism, beginning with the Soros campaign. He was also criticized for calling Miklós Horthy, an ally of Adolf Hitler, one of Hungary’s “exceptional statesmen.” Horthy signed anti-Jewish laws in 1920, 1938 and 1939.

Orban also criticized Soros as a ‘casino capitalist’ who supports migrants and illegal immigration.

“Mr. Soros is also running a campaign against the Hungarian government, and in that, he is not restricted by anything. This is an open discussion that proves the freedom of the press. Mr. Soros – who has made his money with casino capitalism – considers himself as a statesman without a state. With his money, he supports 60 non-government organizations that support migrants and illegal immigration. This is not about the freedom expression, but national security. At this point, I have to become active.”

In the same interview, Orban sharply defended his country’s long-standing fight against the European Union’s request to accept 1,300 Syrian refugees, claiming it would create “parallel societies.”

“We do not consider these people to be Muslim refugees. We consider them to be Muslim invaders. For instance, somebody who wants to come from Syria to Hungary must cross four countries that are not as rich as Germany, but stable. So they are not running for their lives there. They are economic migrants who are looking for a better life.”

One major route of refugees to Europe passes through Turkey, Greece, Macedonia and Serbia before reaching Hungary.

“Multiculturalism is an illusion. We do not want that. And we don’t want something forced upon us,” he said.

His attack on the idea of migration to Hungary continued with a defense of the “will of the people.”

“I can only speak for the Hungarian people, and it doesn’t want migration. It’s impossible, in my understanding, that there is a will of the people on a very fundamental issue, and the leadership of the country rejects to follow the public will. We are talking about sovereignty and the cultural identity of the country here. We have to keep the right to decide who can stay in the territory of Hungary.”

Orbán: No EU money should go to migrants

Budapest will use veto if not happy with bloc’s budget, prime minister says.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán raised the prospect on Friday of blocking the EU’s long-term budget and said none of the bloc’s cash should go to migrants.

Orbán said Budapest would not approve the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) if Budapest is not satisfied with its contents. The Commission unveiled its proposal for the budget on Wednesday but the final version must be approved unanimously by all EU member countries.

“This will be a long debate and negotiating process,” Orbán said in his weekly radio interview. “The Hungarians don’t need to worry. As long as the Hungarians don’t say that it can go, then there is no budget.”

“We don’t think that even a single cent should be given to migrants,” said Orbán, adding that others should pay for migration-related costs out of their own national budgets.

Funds should not be diverted from programs like regional development and research and given to “countries that let in migrants,” said Orbán, whose Fidesz party is a member of the European People’s Party (EPP) group.

Increased spending on dealing with migration is one of the centerpieces of the European Commission’s new budget proposal, and is a popular move among Southern European countries.

Orbán also said Hungary agrees with France that spending on agriculture should not be reduced, and reiterated his criticism of EU institutions.

“The largest faction in the European Parliament is not that of the EPP, but that of George Soros,” he said, referring to the Hungarian-American financier.

      • “Budapest was not occupied by the Nazis in 1930.”

Nor was Berlin or Vienna. In fact even Munich was then non Nazi. Funny thing that! : ) I think the point there is that his formative years 1938-1945 were under Nazi domination as opposed to occupation which only occurred in 1944.

  4. Dearborn Catholic High School Employs ‘Modesty Ponchos’ For Prom Season

There are lots of Catholic schools and lots of proms, but only in Dearborn do we get the “modesty poncho.” Might this have something to do with the fact that this is in Dearborn, where there is a large number of Muslim students and increasing influence of Islam? Will “modesty hijabs” be next? With public schools increasingly opening prayer rooms for Muslim students and presenting a rosy and whitewashed picture of Islam to students, don’t be surprised.

  5. EU chief: Don’t judge Karl Marx for his followers’ crimes (abcnews, May 4, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/eu-chief-judge-karl-marx-followers-crimes-54939004

“European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker says German philosopher Karl Marx shouldn’t be judged for the crimes that his followers committed decades after his death.

Juncker spoke Friday at an event commemorating the 200th anniversary of Marx’s birth in the western German city of Trier.

Alluding to the crimes committed by social revolutionaries in Russia, China and elsewhere, Juncker said “Marx isn’t responsible for all the atrocity his alleged heirs have to answer for.”

Marx laid the philosophical foundations for Communism, an ideology that aims for shared ownership of the means of production and the absence of social classes.

A 4.4-meter (14-feet) statue of Marx, donated by China, is to be unveiled in Trier on Saturday.

    • Germany: Juncker launches impassioned defence of Marx on 200th b’day

President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said that Karl Marx should not be judged for the crimes that his followers committed decades after his death, during an event commemorating the 200th birthday of the German philosopher in Trier on Friday.

“Anyone would do well in remembering Marx because remembering and understanding are part of securing the future. Without memory and thought, without understanding memory, there will not be much for the future,” Juncker said. “Marx isn’t responsible for all the atrocities his alleged heirs have to answer for.”

According to Juncker: “One has to understand Karl Marx from the context of his time and not have prejudices based on hindsight, these judgments shouldn’t exist”.

Juncker also said that Marx has contributed to change the world and inspired many people.

“Karl Marx cannot be held responsible for the fact that some of his later disciples used the values he formulated and the words he used to describe those values as a weapon against others,” he concluded.

    • Why not blame him? He is the one who started the current version of the socialist/marxist/progressive movement.

      • Why not swarm all of the celebrations with cruise missiles and just get this crap over with?

      • If he hadn’t someone else would have. The problem was and still is that in an ideal world where we are all similar clones it might work. In our world it has not chance in hell.
This is an old subject here and I should avoid it but I cannot as it is very current with the left now. Idealism is exceptionally dangerous when it is pushed as an actuality and ignores the reality that is mankind. It is this same idealism that pushed Marx as pushes all of those antifa idiots and neither of the two had or have any real experience with the realities of their idealistic theories. The only older ones you see with antifa are their communist stewards who do the organizing and the logistics as anyone who has a job and actually works sees through their rubbish almost immediately.

  6. North Korea changes its time zone to match South (BBC, May 4, 2018)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-44010705

“North Korea is changing its time zone to match the South after last week’s inter-Korean summit, according to its state media.

The country will move its clocks forward by 30 minutes on Saturday, said the official KCNA news agency.

The reset is “the first practical step” to “speed up the process for the North and the South to become one”, it said.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump says he has a date for his meeting with the North’s leader, Kim Jong-Un.

“We now have a date and we have a location, we’ll be announcing it soon,” Mr Trump told US journalists outside the White House on Friday, adding that he was expecting “very, very good things” to come out it…”

    • Few in the West will fully appreciate the immensity of this move.

As with Islam, in Asia, the loss or gaining of “face” means everything.

Even a simple realignment of time zones is a yuge concession.

      • Does the concept of the carrot instead of the stick mean anything? I cannot see NK wanting to share anything with SK as that world lose the ruling party all of their perks. This is just a sop to let SK and the US think that NK is serious. they are ONLY serious about winning.

        • North Korea has successfully gamed the US over and over and over again. So history would suggest you are correct.

But Trump seems to be able to make the deal.

Lets say for example that North Korea, either through a US weapon or tactic we do not know, or NORK stupidity, lost all or effectively all its nuclear personnel in that tunnel/bunker disaster which killed hundreds.

Lets say that their nuclear program was already effectively over because of this.

Lets say that they were offered a chance to save face and for Kim to be a Hero to his people and a peacemaker to the world. That, or look like a ridiculous little despot who caved in his own facility via stupidity and lots everything

I think that scenario is every bit as likely at this point as Kim gaming the US. After all, Obama isn’t there anymore, and Iran is being defanged and China is facing a loss of revenue thanks to trade questions and tariffs that mean the end of any outside help.

Also, in previous feints, he has never used a real game piece like releasing US hostages or anything like that.

So its his biggest gambit or its for real. The stakes for him are everything. For the US its an hours worth of bad headlines for the administration till The Donald tweets a picture of a bottle of Russian salad dressing and CNN sees it.

          • I do remember China actively condemning further nuclear tests under that mountain as it was already showing signs of collapse and if it did that would irradiate much of Manchuria and badly so. Thus there must be considerable pressure from China (reduced food supplies IIRC)also. perhaps the cupboard is now bare and NK has no longer a choice.

I just hope that however why, you are correct. perhaps NK thinks that it has pushed the boundary far enough and is now happy to allow its proxy..Iran continue the dirty work.

          • Exceptional analysis, Eeyore. I had not considered the tunnel collapse as having depleted (to use a high energy physics term) North Korea’s nuclear brain-reserve.

Between the recent collapse at their Punggye-ri underground test site (along with its potential contamination of The Mainland) and far more muscular sanctions by President Trump, there is increased hope that Communist China will finally clean up some of the filth litter strewn on its borders.

  10. Texas Muslim Wanted to Please Allah by Attacking Mall

    Daniel Greenfield

Matin Azizi-Yarand had two cats and an older sister. He had taken taekwondo and piano lessons.

But while he went through life as a normal high school student, living with his parents in a home in a bland residential development in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, he was also plotting to murder as many non-Muslims as he could at a shopping mall. Unlike the green lawns of nearby houses, the Azizi family had a dead lawn. And there was something just as dead behind the high windows of its Plano home.

“There is a Hindu temple I want to shoot up,” Matin messaged. Then he moved on to plotting an attack at Plano West High School, which he attended and where he was eventually arrested. “School is a perfect place for an attack. Even a blind man could take 10 easily,” he gloated. His ISIS contact had told him that killing ten or a hundred infidels would be easy. “Just fire where you hear screams.”

But finally he settled on the Stonebriar Centre, a shopping mall in nearby Frisco. He collected pictures and scouted the mall. “The security guards don’t even have guns lmao,” he messaged.

  11. New York Creates “Safe Spaces” for Shooting Heroin
    May 4, 2018
    Daniel Greenfield

Safe spaces are all the rage on the left. And so is urban blight.

Public defecation has been legalized in cities like San Francisco. So has homelessness. Marijuana has been legalized. The next step is safe spaces for shooting up heroin. The future is bright. One day we can all live surrounded by mentally ill homeless people shooting up heroin while defecating in public. That’s the leftist utopia.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday evening that the city would push a plan to open so-called safe injection sites for heroin users, part of an effort to reduce an epidemic of deadly drug overdoses across the city.

The mayor indicated up to four sites would operate in New York as part of a one-year pilot effort. The sites would be built into existing needle exchanges without city funding. Among the US cities, only Seattle has said it would use public funds for its facilities, so far.

In an Orwellian twist, Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling the heroin shootup spots, “overdose prevention centers”. The next inevitable step is legalizing medical heroin. And medical crack.

    Europe is falling.

A refugee, who was due to be deported by authorities in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, has disappeared, after about 150 asylum seekers attacked two police patrol cars that had been ordered to remove him, police admitted on Wednesday.

Four officers arrived at a migrant reception center in the town to collect the 23-year-old Togolese man, officials said.

The refugee group then started attacking the patrol vehicles, and harassed and punched the officers, before giving them an ultimatum to free the man.

“They were very aggressive and ordered us to leave the man (…) behind,” said one officer who was involved in the fracas.

    Look who’s giving the orders.

  13. Islamists with Ties to Terror Lobby Congress
A new report exposes the jihadist-linked extremists gaining access to our lawmakers.

    Cynthia Farahat

For the past three years, Islamists with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and terrorist groups have come to Capitol Hill to lobby members of Congress on National Muslim Advocacy Day, an annual event organized by Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO). At last year’s lobby day, according to the Muslim Advocacy Day website, almost 400 participants visited congressional offices.

I have now published a detailed report at the Middle East Forum that profiles the Islamist activists and officials involved with this lobbying effort, and who have previously met with members of Congress and their staffers. Some of these officials are directly linked to terrorists. Others have invited prominent Islamist extremists into American mosques: providing venues for them to spread their message of hate; funneling money to their networks; and using social media to publicize and encourage their activities.

Some examples of these prominent terror-linked Islamist leaders who have participated in Muslim Advocacy Day include:

While politicians from both the Democratic and Republican parties may have differences on some issues, you may be shocked to know that there is clear evidence that the leadership of both parties favor the continuation of the immigration crisis caused by the dysfunctional “broken” immigration system.

Americans have been duped into believing immigration is a “Left” vs “Right” issue when leadership of both parties essentially want the same thing.

  15. Without Weapons the West Disappears
Pope Francis’ recent tweet in context.
    May 4, 2018
    Raymond Ibrahim

What would happen if the world took Pope Francis’ advice (via a tweet)? “Do we really want peace? Then let’s ban all weapons so we don’t have to live in fear of war,” said the pontiff.

While on the surface, the disappearance of all weapons might suggest the inability to do violence, in reality, it would mean the certain annihilation of the West as a civilization.

For starters, the Pope seems to forget that violence and the things that motivate it—hate, envy, rapacity, and plain old evil—do not need weapons. Had he turned to the book he claims to represent, the Bible, he would have seen that the first act of violence—of murder—that of Cain against his brother, Abel, did not require weapons: just a violent and envious will; the brothers “were in the field [when] Cain rose against Abel his brother and killed him.” Genesis 4 does not shed light on how this first fratricide occurred but it was most assuredly done without a formal weapon—maybe a large rock, branch, or simply Cain’s bare hands.

And it is from here that one understands why the West would be swept away without weapons and walls—another defense mechanism that Pope Francis wishes to see eliminated. The same hate, envy, and rapacity that some non-Western peoples have for the West—understood in the context of a “Clash of Civilizations”—would still remain, but there would be little to stop, deter it, or keep it at bay.

What would the US do if 30,000 Mexicans, organized by a known terrorist group, marched towards the Texas border, demanding to return to their ancestors’ homes, with many of the protesters throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails, carrying fence cutters, launching burning kites that set ablaze US territory near the border, igniting tires, and even shooting guns at US agents across the border?

If the US used force to protect its border against such a “peaceful protest,” what percent of the 30,000 Mexicans would end up dead or injured? Would it be more or less than 40 (about .13%)? And how would the global media and human rights organizations react to these incidents?

Now consider the reaction to Israel’s defense against precisely this kind of assault on its sovereign border, dubbed the “Great Return March” and organized by Hamas, a US-State-Department-designated-terrorist organization. Hamas has acknowledged that at least five of its members were among those killed in the march. The number of terrorists involved in the related violence is likely much higher. According to the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, “32 of the 40 Palestinians killed (80%) were terrorist operatives or individuals affiliated with them.”

  17. US Muslim Brotherhood Op Who Called for Trump ‘Execution’ Says Israel will be ‘Obliterated’
Nidal Sakr’s relation to al-Qaeda and likely involvement in murder makes him a serious threat.

On April 6th, from a location in Huntington Beach, California, the Chairman of the March for Justice Nidal Sakr tweeted the following against the state of Israel: “So called ‘israeli CANCER’ MUST BE OBLITERATED AND IT WILL BE.” This was not the first threat issued by Sakr against Israel, and it probably will not be the last, but given Sakr’s past relationship to the founders of al-Qaeda and present relationship to the leadership of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, any threat from him needs to be taken very seriously.

Nidal Mohamed Sakr was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He describes himself as “US born from Palestinian origin.” In a videotaped lecture Sakr gave, in October 2012, he claimed that his mother is Egyptian and enlisted in the Muslim Brotherhood (al-Ikhwan al-Muslimin) at an early age, carrying weapons and ammunition for the group. He stated, “Let me be very clear about this. I was born into Ikhwan, and my mother actually is from the first generation of Ikhwan.”

Around 1970, Sakr joined a Brotherhood terrorist cell in Jordan that was conducting paramilitary operations against Israel. According to Sakr, the individual who recruited him into the cell was Abdullah Azzam, the future mentor of Osama bin Laden and co-founder of al-Qaeda. Also according to Sakr, he personally knew bin Laden. He stated, “Osama bin Laden, himself, was a student of Abdullah Azzam at King Abdul Aziz University. I know him personally. I know his brothers. I know his family.”

  19. BREAKING Federal Judge Stomps On Mueller

A federal judge on Friday harshly rebuked Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team during a hearing for ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort – suggesting they lied about the scope of the investigation, are seeking “unfettered power” and are more interested in bringing down the president.

“You don’t really care about Mr. Manafort,” U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III told Mueller’s team. “You really care about what information Mr. Manafort can give you to lead you to Mr. Trump and an impeachment, or whatever.”

Further, Ellis demanded to see the unredacted “scope memo,” a document outlining the scope of the special counsel’s Russia probe that congressional Republicans have also sought.

The hearing, where Manafort’s team fought to dismiss an 18-count indictment on tax and bank fraud-related charges, took a confrontational turn as it was revealed that at least some of the information in the investigation derived from an earlier Justice Department probe – in the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

  20. Yemen: Thousands rally in Sana’a against Jerusalem Embassy move

A pro-Palestinian demonstration was held in San’a on Friday with thousands voicing their anger over US President Donald Trump’s decision to move the US’s Israeli Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

People held Palestinian and Yemeni flags, expressing their support for the Palestinian people.

“We are standing by their side with our arms, souls and blood until the liberation of Jerusalem. This is the path that we are on,” one of the protesters Abu Hajar said.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has recently reiterated the US decisiveness saying: “We will soon move our embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, years ahead of schedule.”

Trump’s decision to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv sparked protests and fury around the world, particularly among Arabs who view it as a provocation against the Palestinian people.

As Mueller and his cronies dig deeper and deeper into the non-existent Russia/Trump collusion, one thing is for sure. The DNC is not looking good.

Seems presidential candidate Hillary Clinton took over the committee and used it’s resources on her behalf in her second failed presidential run.
    .
Now NBC News political reporter Jonathan Allen raised more concerns throughout the Democratic Party saying former President Bill Clinton instructed DNC boss Tom Perez to “not let the party go to Bernie Sanders folks.”

What would Ilhan Omar, now a state lawmaker in Minnesota, tell her 8-year-old self, stuck in a refugee camp in Kenya? Here’s her answer. Bring a tissue.

The Curious Case of Ilhan Omar

[...]As many candidates do, Omar has made her personal background an integral part of her campaign. But neither the candidate nor the reporters who covered her have shown much interest in exploring one aspect of her personal story that recently came to public attention: the fact that she is not legally married to the man she advertises as the husband and the father of her three children.

In fact, she is legally married to another man—who may be her brother.

A posting on the SomaliSpot discussion board alleged that Omar had married the man touted as her husband in 2002 before marrying her brother for fraudulent purposes in 2009.
The post, which seems to have been written by someone from Minneapolis’s Somali community, was quickly deleted. By the time it came to my attention, the post was only available via a Google cache (now also deleted). If the story is true, however, it suggests that Omar had engaged in some kind of dishonest activity in connection with her marriage to her brother (which by itself would be illegal).

  24. reuters – Spy agency NSA triples collection of U.S. phone records: official report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. National Security Agency collected 534 million records of phone calls and text messages of Americans last year, more than triple gathered in 2016, a U.S. intelligence agency report released on Friday said.

The sharp increase from 151 million occurred during the second full year of a new surveillance system established at the spy agency after U.S. lawmakers passed a law in 2015 that sought to limit its ability to collect such records in bulk.

The spike in collection of call records coincided with an increase reported on Friday across other surveillance methods, raising questions from some privacy advocates who are concerned about potential government overreach and intrusion into the lives of U.S. citizens.

The 2017 call records tally remained far less than an estimated billions of records collected per day under the NSA’s old bulk surveillance system, which was exposed by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden in 2013.

The records collected by the NSA include the numbers and time of a call or text message, but not their content.

Overall increases in surveillance hauls were both mystifying and alarming coming years after Snowden’s leaks, privacy advocates said.

“The intelligence community’s transparency has yet to extend to explaining dramatic increases in their collection,” said Robyn Greene, policy counsel at the Washington-based Open Technology Institute that focuses on digital issues.

The government “has not altered the manner in which it uses its authority to obtain call detail records,” Timothy Barrett, a spokesman at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which released the annual report, said in a statement.

The NSA has found that a number of factors may influence the amount of records collected, Barrett said. These included the number of court-approved selection terms, which could be a phone number of someone who is potentially the subject of an investigation, or the amount of historical information retained by phone service providers, Barrett said.

“We expect this number to fluctuate from year to year,” he said.

U.S. intelligence officials have said the number of records collected would include multiple calls made to or from the same phone numbers and involved a level of duplication when obtaining the same record of a call from two different companies.

Friday’s report also showed a rise in the number of foreigners living outside the United States who were targeted under a warrantless internet surveillance program, known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, that Congress renewed earlier this year.

That figure increased to 129,080 in 2017 from 106,469 in 2016, the report said, and is up from 89,138 targets in 2013, or a cumulative rise over five years of about 45 percent.

U.S. intelligence agencies consider Section 702 a vital tool to protect national security but privacy advocates say the program incidentally collects an unknown number of communications belonging to Americans.

  25. Former Moroccan-American FBI Agent Says Bureau is ‘Islamophobic’ (moroccoworldnews, May 4, 2018)
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2018/05/245728/moroccan-american-fbi-bureau-islamophobic/

“… Barodi’s troubles began in 2012 when he “learned of Islamophobic materials being used to train agents.” He filed a complaint that the bureau dismissed.

From that moment on, he explains, he started feeling alienated within the bureau, though that did not affect his “excellent” records and satisfying performances. “I was able to use my skills and knowledge to help my country, and I loved it,” he says.

However, following an incident with a plainclothes Department of Homeland Security Agent at the Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris (Barodi refused to cooperate with the agent, whose questions he deemed intrusive and Islamophobic), he learned that the bureau intended to dismiss him from his post. He emailed James Comey about the vicissitudes of Muslim agents, saying: “We feel the FBI resents needing us, and we are not set up to succeed.”

In response, Comey emphasized the need for effectiveness and appropriate scrutiny. Minority agents shoudl draw the line between what is unduly offensive and the necessary scrutiny needed for people from some backgrounds with possible risky connections, he continued, referring to friends or relatives who might be threats to national security.

“Airports are choke points to harass and humiliate us,” Barodi now says. “I’ve had it with my friends having to go through this, I’ve had it with my co-workers having to go through this,” he now laments, unable to comprehend how a trivial incident at a foreign airport with a plainclothes agent could lead to the professional downfall agent deemed excellent and acknowledged for his serious and thorough work as an analyst.

Barodi was later fired for the incident, because his refusal to fully cooperate with an agent’s questions was deemed “unprofessional.” He filed a rebuttal against the decision, as a matter of pure protocol, and was surprised to hear that the bureau’s review board ruled that his appeal was strong enough to overrule his initial dismissal from the FBI.

Barodi was ostensibly reinstated in the Bureau, with only a standard security check–which he had passed several times during his time with the FBI–between him and full employment. However, the week-long process was delayed and passed between various departments. Five months passed between the time that the bureau vacated his dismissal, and yet Barodi was not receiving transparent contact with the former agent. The Bureau left him “in the dark” about his career, effectively terminating his FBI tenure and creating further barriers to employment at other security sector positions..

“I can’t get my FBI job back, I can’t get any decent paying job anywhere, he explained.

Being a Muslim agent is “a cancer,” he later told the Guardian, explaining the bureaucratic complications and unfounded procedures that would subsequently lead to his second dismissal from the Bureau….”

“Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday spoke out against the European Commission’s budget proposal, in an interview with Hungarian public radio M1.

“It’s unacceptable that cohesion funds and agricultural funds are cut to give more to countries that accept migrants,” Orban said.

Orban said no more should be spent for migrants, in opposition to increasing the fund to manage migrant flows.

“Countries that accept migrants must resolve the problem with their own resources, and must not have even one cent from European coffers,” he said.

Orban said the seven-year budget requires unanimous approval.

“Without the Hungarians’ approval, no budget,” he said, in an effort to reassure his electors.”

  29. US special forces secretly deployed to assist Saudi Arabia in Yemen conflict

The Pentagon said before that the US role in the conflict was limited to ‘refuelling and logistics’

A team of elite US soldiers called the Green Berets were deployed in secret last year to the Saudi Arabia-Yemen border to help defeat the Houthi rebels.

Since the Yemen conflict began three years ago, Houthi rebels have launched ballistic missiles towards Riyadh and other Saudi Arabian cities on numerous occasions and the kingdom has responded with its own airstrikes. Twelve Green Berets were deployed to the border in December 2017 just weeks after Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman renewed his call for American support claimed the kingdom had intercepted the latest missile, shot at the Riyadh airport.

Officials from President Donald Trump’s administration as well as European and Arab diplomats, told the New York Times the troops are “helping locate and destroy” training sites and missiles of the Houthis. Part of their mission is to also train Saudi troops on how best to defend their border with Yemen.

The newspaper reported that the rebels “pose no direct threat to the US”. The Pentagon had previously said its role in the conflict was limited to “refuelling, logistics, and general intelligence sharing”.

The war in the region’s poorest country began in 2014 when Houthi rebels took control of Sanaa and pushed south towards Aden. Saudi Arabia and its coalition, fearing that the rebels were being backed by its rival Iran, then launched a series of air strikes to restore control for the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The Houthis, who hail from northern Yemen, control Sanaa and much of the country’s north – which borders Saudi Arabia – and the key Hodeida port on the Red Sea coast.

Since the air strikes began, at least 10,000 people have died as a result and 40,000 have been wounded. The conflict has also played a large part in causing a cholera epidemic and leaving millions facing famine and severe malnutrition.

“There is no indication that the American commandos have crossed into Yemen as part of the secretive mission,” the newspaper reported and the Pentagon have cited security reasons for not commenting on the matter save to say that the operation includes “limited non-combat support, such as intelligence sharing,” according to Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway.

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Armed Services Committee, called the Green Berets mission a “purposeful blurring of lines between train and equip missions and combat”. He has renewed his call for Congress to pass a new “authorisation of use of military force” (AUMF), since the US Congress is the only body that has the ability to declare war. The US has been operating in several conflict zones around the world under the same AUMF since 2001, which were war powers passed just days after the September 11th attacks when the US military began its ongoing war in Afghanistan.

There are also US intelligence experts in the southern Saudi city of Najran that have been working with Saudi troops.

Despite Mr Trump’s ever-closer ties to Saudi Arabia, he had asked the kingdom to end a blockade on Yemeni ports last December, possibly around the time the Green Berets had been deployed.

Mr Trump had said in a statement that he had directed US officials to call Saudi Arabian leaders and request they “completely allow food, fuel, water and medicine to reach the Yemeni people.”

He said at time that Yemenis “desperately need it”.

“Islamabad is devoting more resources to Pakistan’s space program as part of its effort to become less reliant on foreign-owned space assets, according to a new report.

In the 2018 to 2019 fiscal year, the Pakistani government will spend more than $40 million on its Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the country’s space agency, including on launching new satellites. In 2011, Islamabad spent about $35 million on SUPARCO.

The Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite, for instance, is slated to launch in June.

The agency plans to build a new research center in Karachi while allocating space centers in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore connected with the Pakistan Multi-Mission Satellite (PakSat-MM1) some $22 million, Defense News reported Friday.

The satellites Pakistan wants to launch will have both military and civilian applications and will help Islamabad keep eyes on its perennial rival New Delhi, Pakistani media reported. About 1.35 billion Pakistani rupees (roughly $11.66 million) will go toward procuring the PakSat-MM1.

  32. Liberal Chicago Proposes New Mass Surveillance Tactic

Illinois passed a law three years ago requiring police to get warrants before use drones for most surveillance purposes. But a bill being pushed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his allies in the state legislature would blow a massive hole in these restrictions by allowing the government to use drones to monitor protests and large gatherings.

The American Civil Liberties Union is raising hell, noting that the change in the law would allow Chicago police (who have a history of secret surveillance against political activists) to take pictures, record video, and even use facial recognition tools against protesters. The Chicago Sun-Times reports:

“If this bill is passed, as drafted, during the next large scale political rally, drones could identify and list people protesting the Trump administration,” added [Karen Sheley, director of the ACLU’s Police Practices Project].

“The sight of drones overhead, collecting information, may deter people from protesting in a time when so many want to exercise their First Amendment rights….This is too much unchecked power to give to the police—in Chicago or anywhere.”

    http://reason.com/blog/2018/05/04/chicago-mayor-pushing-for-police-drone-s

    • If they think Rahm would do anything against people protesting Trump they are crazy, he is more likely to want a record of those attending the Trump rallies.
