  2. Germans fear the rise of ‘lawless’ neighborhoods, poll shows (DW, Apr 15, 2018)
    http://www.dw.com/en/germans-fear-the-rise-of-lawless-neighborhoods-poll-shows/a-43395944

“A new survey has shown that about half of Germans believe there are places in the country so lawless, even police won’t venture there. However, whether the facts support this perception is doubtful.

A poll published on Sunday by Germany’s biggest tabloid, Bild, found that just a little over half of Germans believe there are neighborhoods in the country so dangerous that even police fear to tread there.

About 51 percent of participants said that they believed lawless “no-go” zones existed, whereas 41 percent said there were no such areas in Germany. About 77 percent said they wished police would crack down harder on crime syndicates.

The somewhat dubious concept of lawless areas in Germany has been promoted in no small part by disproportionate reporting of crimes committed by migrants and foreigners in popular media, particularly outlets like Bild.

Statistics published biannually by the Federal Criminal Police (BKA) paint a different picture. According to the BKA, foreigners are less likely than native-born Germans to commit every category of crime. For example, of the about 150,000 cases of assault registered in the country in 2016, only 38 percent of the culprits were non-Germans.

The BKA’s latest report from January 2018 further clarifies that the majority of the crimes committed by foreigners are things such as riding public transport without a ticket and petty theft.

These facts have not stopped some lawmakers, including Chancellor Angela Merkel’s new Health Minister Jens Spahn, from promoting the idea that there are “neighborhoods in Essen, Duisburg and Berlin where you get the impression that the state is no longer willing or able to enforce the law there.”

However, a recent visit to one of the most notorious of these “no-go” areas, a neighborhood called Marxloh in the rust-belt city of Duisburg, revealed that, at least in this case, there wasn’t much to substantiate the media hype.

Indeed, Marxloh is like many neighborhoods in many German cities — a little run-down, with some visible unemployment. However, on the whole, Duisburg, known for its relatively high rate of foreign residents, actually has a lower crime rate than nearby Aachen, which is known as a quiet, quaint university town.”

    • Only 38 percent! ONLY 38 PERCENT?! That is like roughly 20x over representation when compared to the native population. Must have been some dummy reporter or something.

      • That is like roughly 20x over representation when compared to the native population.

Massive over-representation means nothing to Progressives. But give them just one unproven example of disparate impact and they will wet themselves howling for blood.

This is why America has such astronomic levels of Black crime, even while it maintains some of the world’s tougher anti-discrimination laws. Europe is about to discover just how brutal it is to be whipsawed by this sort of mollycoddling of criminal elements even as jailing them becomes evermore imperative.

  3. ‘Massive Backsliding’: Turkey Bid to Join EU Bloc Doomed Says New Evaluation (sputniknews, Apr 16, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201804161063595220-turkey-bid-to-join-eu-bloc-doomed-new-evaluation/

“The European Commission in Brussels will soon give some pointedly negative updates to Turkey’s progress in joining the European Union in its country report.

In a draft version of the upcoming report, the EU Commission noted that “Turkey has made big steps away from the EU” and that there is a “serious relapse in the areas of justice, public administration reform, fundamental rights and freedom of expression.” The Commission also predicted additional relapses “in an increasing number of other areas,” according to Politico.

The draft report also urges Turkey to “end the state of emergency without any delay,” referring to “disproportionate measures” used by its president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and his administration, including layoffs and arrests following a July 15, 2016, coup attempt.

Erdogan quickly issued a state of emergency following the poorly planned and ineptly executed military coup. Since the attempt, some 150,000 people have been placed in custody and at least 110,000 civil servants have been fired. In addition, at least 150 journalists, as well as many authors and rights activists, have been detained.

“There is massive backsliding away from the European Union,” one EU official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

In addition, the report adds that “above all, Turkey needs to reverse the current negative trend in the rule of law and fundamental rights” and “the weakening of an effective separation of powers in the political system should be addressed.”

The report did commend Turkey’s economy, however, and its “outstanding performance” in hosting an estimated 4 million Syrian refugees.

The final version of the official report is to be released Tuesday.”

“THIS is the shocking moment a man swung a machete during a 20-person street brawl in Birmingham.

The terrifying clip shows a man dressed in black brandishing the huge blade just yards from Birmingham’s Villa Park football stadium, as a shocked crowd gather and film the incident.

In the video the man can be seen slashing at victims who run and cower before the violence spills out from the pavement onto the road.

The video, shared by Birmingham Live, begins with a 20-strong group flocking out of a medical centre before a man and the machete-wielding attacker square up.

The knifeman launches a series of deadly blows with the machete before being pulled to the ground.

There, the man is punched, kicked and stamped on in the horror footage.

Somehow, he escapes the gang and is shepherded away from the scene. The gang then also flee the area.

West Midlands Police confirmed they received a number of calls to the incident, but no arrests had been made and no injuries were reported.

A spokeswoman said: “We received reports of a group of boys fighting on Bevington Road, at around 6pm on Saturday.

“When officers arrived no-one remained at the scene.

“There were no arrests and no reports of any injuries.

“Witnesses reported a machete had been seen.”

She added: “Anyone with information or video footage is urged to call police on 101, quoting log number 2090 of April 14.”…”
