      • Dems’ rebuttal to GOP FISA memo is released; Trump deems it a ‘bust’

President Trump on Saturday dismissed a Democratic rebuttal to the GOP memo outlining government surveillance abuses in the 2016 campaign as a “total political and legal bust,” claiming that it only confirms the ”terrible things” that were done by the nation’s intelligence agencies.

The rebuttal, written by Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee, concluded that officials at the FBI and Justice Department “did not abuse the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) process, omit material information, or subvert this vital tool to spy on the Trump campaign.”

Democrats sought to counter claims made in a Republican memo released this month that the FBI and DOJ relied on a Democrat-funded anti-Trump dossier to ask the FISA court for a warrant to monitor Trump adviser Carter Page.

Democrats have vehemently claimed that the Republican memo left out important information.

Leader of Italian right-wing Lega Nord (Northern League) party Matteo Salvini held a rally in Milan’s main square on Saturday, under the slogan ‘Italians first’ and ahead of the March 4 general elections.

The rally in Milan’s Piazza del Duomo was the end of a procession that had started in Porta Venezia earlier on Saturday.

  3. “GOP governor leads fight against ending refugee influx from Somalia and other jihadist strongholds” by Leo Hohmann – February 23, 2018

    Excerpts:

The average wage in the meatpacking industry back in the 1980s was over $20 an hour. Since then, it’s been cut nearly in half. Benefits have evaporated. The Chamber of Commerce and globalist politicians then complain of “labor shortages” in South Dakota and say they can’t find enough Americans to work for $10 an hour. That’s probably because the Americans in South Dakota don’t want a “job” that requires them to fill in gaping holes in their incomes with food stamps, Medicaid, and subsidized housing. Refugees have no problem signing up for these benefits, compliments of you, the taxpayer.

‘How I joined the jihadis by mistake’ [Kosovar]

This is Albert Berisha. He’s 31 years old and five years ago he went to Syria to fight.
“I know it’s hard to believe, but it happened,” Albert says about his nine days with different extremist groups. Articulate and focused, he says his primary reason for going to Syria was to oppose the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.
To misquote the film Withnail and I, Albert went to fight “by mistake”, ricocheting between uncomfortable and frightening experiences. During this brief but eventful period, he says al-Nusra Front – a group once affiliated to al-Qaeda – tried to enlist him, before letting him go. Then he went to stay with a group of fellow ethnic Albanians – before finding out they were trying to join so-called Islamic State, which he didn’t want to do.
Albert says he escaped while they were busy fighting Kurds, and went to join Ahrar al-Sham, a coalition of Islamist and Salafist groups that is not classified as a terrorist organisation. He was taught how to take apart, clean and reassemble a Kalashnikov, but maintains that he never fought. After just five days, he realised life in Syria didn’t match the romantic ideas he’d had of joining a revolution to liberate the oppressed.

“went to join Ahrar al-Sham, a coalition of Islamist and Salafist groups that is not classified as a terrorist organisation.“

    Just “… Islamist and Salafist…”

There is an awful lot of these thought-shaping propaganda stories on the BBC these days. Infuriating that you can never comment, by design of course. Ties in with the 400+ highly skilled IS brain surgeons they have let back into the UK to wander the streets.

Gaol / jail him forever already, give him a one-way ticket back, or get out the rope. And the EU plans to give Kosovar EU status. Awesome.

That BBC story about the IS chick who realised she was brainwashed was really hard to swallow too.

In a move likely to pave the way for Chinese leader Xi Jinping to stay at the country’s helm beyond his second five-year term, the ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee has proposed to remove term limits for the president and vice president.

In a short release, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said that the Central Committee had proposed to remove from the country’s constitution the expression that the president and vice president “shall serve no more than two consecutive terms.”

  6. North Korea condemns sanctions, but seen open to talks with U.S.

SEOUL (Reuters) – Senior officials from Pyongyang visiting South Korea on Sunday said North Korea was open to talks with the United States, hours after it accused Washington of trying to stir up conflict on the peninsula with new sanctions.

In Pyeongchang for the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics, the visiting delegation also said developments in relations between the two Koreas and between North Korea and the United States should go hand in hand, the South’s presidency said in a statement.

The delegation met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at an undisclosed location in the Olympic city.

Earlier a statement released by North Korean state media accused the United States of provoking confrontation on the Korean peninsula with Friday’s sanctions announcement.

Sunday’s closing ceremony was attended by Moon, the North Korean delegation, and U.S. President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, among other dignitaries.

  7. Russian mercenaries describe U.S. strikes: ‘They beat our a**es like we were little pieces of sh**’

The Pickrell article below refers to the strike by U.S. forces near Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria on 7 February. Syrian regime units had crossed the Euphrates and occupied a position on the Coalition (SDF/Kurdish) side of the deconfliction zone. Over the last week, information has been filtering out about the large presence of Russian-sponsored mercenaries with the Syrian regime force. Readers will recall that this whole event – of an unprecedented kind in the Syrian war to date – took place three days before the Iranians in central Syria sent the drone to penetrate Israeli air space, on 10 February.

Now Ryan Pickrell of the Daily Caller News Foundation reports recordings from Russian fighters describing their very unpleasant experience. This comes at the same time we have gotten confirmation that the Russians have deployed the Su-57 strike-fighter, still in prototype evaluation, to Syria. Two of the fifth-generation aircraft were recorded arriving at Khmeimim Air Base in northwest Syria on 21 February, and imaged at the air base two days later.

It would be distinctly un-Russian-like to send the not-yet-operationally-fielded Su-57 out to make a fool of itself. Anything else that can be said about the deployment is obvious to the point of banality. However, I’ll note once again that there’s more shooting at certain targets going on than we should be comfortable with, given the formal definition of our mission in Syria. It does no good to rant; this just isn’t how I would be running the show. – J.E.

The Russian government has downplayed the recent strikes on Russian mercenaries in Syria. However, recordings from fighters on the ground reveal just how hard U.S. forces hit them.

“One squadron f**king lost 200 people … right away, another one lost 10 people … and I don’t know about the third squadron but it got torn up pretty badly, too … So three squadrons took a beating,” a man believed to be a Russian contract soldier said in the first of three audio recordings obtained from a source close to the Kremlin by Polygraph.info, a fact-checking website affiliated with Voice of America.

    • Zakharova Downplays Armed Clash with Americans in Syria, Kremlin-linked Audio Recordings Contradict Her Story

Opposition leaders inside Russia, as well as Russian and Western media reports, dispute Zakharova’s comments.

Polygraph.info has obtained audio recordings from a source close to the Kremlin who said the Russian casualties were personnel from a private Russian military company who attempted to capture an oil refinery in Syria.

“So, one squadron f**** lost 200 people…right away,” said one of three mercenary soldiers. “Another one lost 10 people… and I don’t know about the third squadron but it got torn up pretty badly, too.”

Most news reports cite similar casualty figures.

The incident took place on the night of February 7-8, a week before Zakharova’s briefing in Moscow.

The U.S. said its forces acted in self-defense – in response to an offensive by what were assumed to be pro-Assad forces.

  8. Democrats’ rebuttal memo on FBI FISA application released by House Intel Committee
    By J.E. Dyer February 24, 2018

With interesting timing, the rebuttal memo from the Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee was just released (on Saturday, 24 February).

The memo can be read in full here. If you’ve been keeping up with this story, you’ll be able to detect all the ways in which the points in it are simply reframed for special pleading. I’ll mention a couple of those in a moment, but basically, that’s what the entire document is: a special-plea brief.

There are points of fact on which it purports to differ with what we understand to be the public record. A major example is when the FBI first received information from the Steele dossier. The Democrats’ memo asserts at least twice that the FBI didn’t have the Steele dossier until mid-September.

By contrast, the New York Times and the Guardian have both reported that Christopher Steele met with at least one FBI agent (and reportedly a group of them) as early as 5 July 2016, and provided information from the dossier at that time. The original House memo, written by the Republicans, alluded to that as a possibility, but did not confirm it outright, suggesting that the information actually available to the House from the FBI has not included specific reference to such meetings.

However, the Democratic memo is also careful to say that it was the investigators preparing the FISA application who didn’t receive the Steele dossier until mid-September. There were others in the FBI who already knew about it. This excerpt is from page 3 of the memo (screen cap below):

  10. MEMRI – Cleveland Imam Islam Hassan: Muhammad Was Not Marrying a Child When He Married 9-Year-Old ‘Aisha

Speaking at the Islamic Center of Cleveland, Ohio, Egyptian-American imam Islam Hassan defended the Prophet Muhammad’s marriage to ‘Aisha, mentioning various Christian personalities, from St. Augustine to the kings of England, who, he claimed, had taken child brides, and saying that the Prophet’s marriage was in line with the customs and traditions of his day.

Islam Hassan, who served as the Imam of the Islamic Society of Vermont for the past seven years, further said that the age of puberty was between 9-15 years and concluded that ‘Aisha had already reached puberty at the age of nine, when she was married off to the Prophet. “So he did not marry a child,” he said.

The address was his debut appearance as the imam of the Islamic Center of Cleveland, and it was posted on the center’s YouTube channel on November 3.

  11. Israel set to deport African economic migrants, Canada says wait (they want more)
    by Ann Corcoran

Canada is apparently the leading country to take off Israel’s hands some of the tens of thousands of Africans who entered Israel illegally. Israel says they are mostly economic migrants and not legitimate refugees.

Canada wants a bunch, so why they are dragging their feet isn’t clear.

And, readers, know that the US is taking some too. I just checked data at Wrapsnet and it looks like we have taken 58 during this fiscal year as of January 31.

Here is the news at The Star:

Ottawa has reached a last-minute deal with Israel to suspend the deportation of asylum-seekers who currently are waiting for resettlement to Canada.

Israel refugeesWaiting for a ticket to Canada?

Israel is set to begin deporting some 37,000 asylum-seekers, the majority of them Sudanese and Eritreans, in April after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government issued them expulsion notices.

The asylum-seekers, most of them deemed by Israel to be economic migrants rather than refugees in need of protection, can either leave voluntarily for a “safe” African country and receive $3,500 and a plane ticket, or face imprisonment.

The Canadian government is under the gun to resettle 1,845 of the African refugees whose sponsorship applications are currently in process, some for years.

“Canada does not support policies of mass deportations of asylum-seekers. The rights of asylum-seekers and refugees are laid out in the Geneva Convention on the Status of Refugees, of which Israel is a signatory,” said Adam Austen, press secretary for Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland.

“The ambulance service are also in attendance and we are unable to confirm any injuries at this time.”

The explosion appears to have decimated the building where the raging inferno began, with footage from the scene showing flames towering above nearby houses.

One witness told the Mirror: “It’s blown the shop across both sides of lanes and there is carnage everywhere.

“It rattled doors and windows here.”

The main-road facing area of the residential district is mostly made up of corner shops and takeaways – with homes on the upper floors.

Kat Pattison, a nearby resident, claimed her whole house shook as the blast ripped through the shop.

Speaking to the Guardian, she said: “There was a huge bang and the whole house shook…”

    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1186516/india-pakistan-exchange-artillery-fire

“India and Pakistan have traded artillery fire in the disputed Kashmir region forcing hundreds of people to flee, police in Indian Kashmir said, raising fresh doubts about a 15-year-old ceasefire between the nuclear-armed rivals in the area.

It was not clear what triggered the latest fighting on Saturday in the Uri sector on the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the mostly Muslim Himalayan region.

But tension has been running high since an attack on an Indian army camp in Kashmir this month in which six soldiers were killed.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack and said it would make its rival pay for the “misadventure,” according to Reuters.

Police superintendent Imtiaz Hussain said artillery shells fired by the Pakistan army fell in the Uri area and hundreds of villagers had fled from their homes.

Indian forces returned artillery fire, an Indian officer said, the first time the heavy guns had been used since a 2003 ceasefire along the disputed frontier.

    Pakistan did not comment yet.”

  31. Meet the ‘Westway Warriors’: At least 14 ISIS fighters who were recruited from a few streets in west London (dailymail, Feb 25, 2018)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5433297/14-ISIS-fighters-recruited-west-London-streets.html

“A leader of the British jihadis dubbed the ‘Beatles’ is suspected of radicalising at least 12 men in just over two square miles of the capital.

The Islamic State fighter could have recruited other fundamentalists in West London to wage religious warfare in Syria and Iraq.

At least 14 fighters are thought to have been recruited to the terrorist group while living in streets either side of the A40 Westway flyover.

The suspects include two set of brothers and a hairdresser from Ladbroke Grove in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, according to a Sunday Times investigation.

The men barber was detained while trying to return to the UK recently. One fighter who posed with a severed head online, along with another jihadi are yet to have their locations pinpointed.

But Alexanda Kotey from Notting Hill is believed to by US officials to have been central to their radicalisation.

The 34-year-old is one of two Brits who are part of the so-called Beatles beheading group captured by Kurdish forces last month in Syria.

Both CIA and MI6 operatives are believed to have had access to Kotey along with fellow West London captive El Shafee Elsheikh.

The 29-year-old and Kotey are thought to have been interrogated about their Islamic State contacts.

Muslim convert Kotey has been described as ‘responsible for recruiting several UK nationals to join the terrorist organisation’.

Experts regard him as ‘a natural leader’ and he is the oldest of the 14 men who lived around the Westway flyover…”
