  1. 56% of French People Say Islam is Compatible With Their Society: Survey (moroccoworldnews, Feb 11, 2018)
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2018/02/240422/56-french-people-say-islam-compatible-muslims-ifop-france/

“Fifty-six percent of French people believe that Islam is compatible with the values of their country, according to a survey conducted by the French-based polling firm, the Institut Français d’Opinion Publique (IFOP).

The survey results, which were published today by the French weekly newspaper, Le Journal Du Dimanche, show that the majority of French people think that Islam is compatible with their society, while 43 percent believe the opposite.

A similar survey conducted in September 2016 showed that 56 percent of French people saw Islam as incompatible with the country’s values, while only 44 percent of respondents thought that Islam is compatible with their society.

According to the newspaper, notwithstanding this apparent development, “Islam remains a major topic that brings a cleavage” among French people according to their political sensitivities and biases.

The survey responses indicate a sharp divide based on political affiliation. 63 percent of Republicans supporters and 62 percent of National Front (Front National) supporters believe that Islam is incompatible with the values of French society. However, 73 percent of Socialist Party supporters and 60 percent of those of la France Soumise, as well as 58 percent of la République en Marche supporters, think the opposite, according to the survey.

Ifop also surveyed French people about the proposal to add a tax on halal food. The idea of the food tax was first proposed in 2016 by an association representing French Muslims to fund mosques and to combat radicalization among young people. The effort was in response to concerns in France about the financing of mosques in the country as well as to a series of terror attacks that France witnessed over the past few years, according to British news outlet The Independent.

In this regard, a large majority of French people (70 percent) are opposed to the “tax on halal” proposal, while only 29 percent support the idea.

In 2016, former French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said in an interview with the French newspaper Liberation that the majority of French people see Islam as incompatible with the values of the Republic. The prime minister noted the importance of demonstrating the opposite.

“Certain people don’t want to believe it, a majority of French citizens doubt it, but I’m convinced that it’s possible.” However, the former prime minister said that French society can “demonstrate that Islam, a great world religion and the second religion of France, is fundamentally compatible with the Republic, democracy, our values and equality between men and women,” said Valls in the Libérationinterview.”

  2. Rising tensions among Pak-Afghan forces along the Durand Line (khaama, Feb 11, 2018)
    https://www.khaama.com/rising-tensions-among-pak-afghan-forces-along-the-durand-line-04465

“Reports emerging from the eastern Kunar province indicate growing tensions among the Afghan and Pakistani forces along the Durand Line amid persistent cross-border shelling by the Pakistani military.

The provincial governor Wahidullah Kalimzai says thousands of artillery shells have been fired on various parts of Kunar province during the past several months.

Kalimzai further added that the issue was repeatedly shared through diplomatic channels with the Pakistani government but there has been no change in the cross-border shelling.

He said the Afghan forces have started to retaliate the shelling and during the recent days have started to shell the areas from where the shelling take place.

This comes as talks are underway between the Afghan and Pakistani officials on diplomatic level to resolve the tensions and improve the bilateral relations which have been marred mainly due to the circumstances surrounding the fight against the terrorism.

The Afghan officials believe that the ongoing violence in the country has links with the leadership councils of the Taliban and Haqqani network based in Pakistan, a claim which has repeatedly been rejected by Islamabad.

In the meantime, the ministry foreign affairs of Afghanistan said Saturday that no progress was made in the second round of talks between Islamabad and Kabul regarding the fight against terrorism, reduction in violence and peace and reconciliation.”

      • Always have, always will.
The borders were drawn without reference to tribal identification. Couldn’t possibly work, it’s a mosaic that makes nation-state maps into confetti. It’s another paradigm altogether.
Probably the single worst legacy of imperialism – most of which was positive, on balance.

  3. Turkish soldiers advancing slowly in Afrin to fight in line with Islamic ethics: Top religious body head (hurriyetdailynews, Feb 11, 2018)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-soldiers-advancing-slowly-in-afrin-to-fight-in-line-with-islamic-ethics-top-religious-body-head-127126

“Turkish soldiers are advancing slowly in Syria’s Afrin district to avoid harming civilians in the area, according to Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) head Ali Erba?.

“Our Muslims soldiers are undertaking their fight in line with Islam’s principles. That is why they are moving slowly in Afrin. They are moving with the conscience of not causing even one person’s nose to bleed; after all, this is Islam’s order,” Erba? said on Feb. 10 during a speech at the Orhan Gazi Culture Center in the western province of Sakarya’s Adapazar? district.

“All our conquests in history were undertaken to prevent oppression. Our soldiers fire their bullets against oppressors, to protect those oppressed. Our soldiers are clashing for this, because there are terror organizations there, and they are constantly oppressing,” Erba? said.

Speaking about the “exploitation of Islam by various groups like Boko Haram, al-Shabab, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [ISIL] and the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization [FETÖ],” he said they can be tackled by giving people the “right knowledge on religion.”

“If we do not undertake our duties at this point, then we will face groups that are promoted as religious formations but which later turn into terror organizations. How did ISIL, Boko Haram, al-Shabab, and FETÖ show up? They did through incorrect interpretations of religion,” he said.”

    • Turk-Face hasn’t dared fly so much as a drone, Putin’s still so touchy about his dead pilot and lost plane. Assad seems to be giving safe-passage to the Kurds en route to Afrin, and Russia – in control of the airspace – is letting them do their thing.

The Turk is allied with rabid jihadis in a suburb of Damascus, Eastern Ghouta. It’s an ugly tangle of al-Q, ISIS, and myriad crazy Sunnis. They cannot prevail here: it’s sovereign Syria, defended by regime forces backed to the gills by Iran and Russia.

It violates the Astana Accord, a diplomatic tap-dance with Iran and Russia. It’s hard to figure the Turk’s recklessness. You can almost understand his fight for Afrin, so strategic and symbolic for the Kurds. But this deep incursion into Idlib Province is flat out aggression.

Whatever. Life’s more interesting for Putin and his little buddies, our enemies are killing each other. Though not nearly as many as reported, unfortunately. Both sides are pumping an intensity that doesn’t exist, that’s largely staged.
