TORONTO – ONTARIO – Man cuts hijab off girl in Scarborough, police say

The man then fled the scene. Police are seeking one male suspect.

A Scarborough mother is demanding police label an assault against her daughter a hate crime after the child’s hijab was cut with a pair of scissors while she was walking to school.

The girl, a student at Pauline Johnson Junior Public School, was then attacked a second time, ten minutes after the first assault. The man fled the scene after the assault.

The incident happened Friday morning near Pauline Johnson Junior Public School in Scarborough, police confirmed.

Police say they are seeking a male suspect described as Asian, in his 20s, with a medium build of roughly 5’8” – 6’0. He has black hair, a moustache, and was wearing glasses, a black hoodie, and black pants. The man used scissors with a blue handle, and was wearing brown gloves, the girl told reporters.

Speaking at a press conference Friday, the victim, 11-year-old Khawlah Noman, says the man smiled at her when he cut her hijab. She appeared alongside her mother, Saima Samad, and her younger brother, 10- year-old Mohammad Zakariyya, who was walking with her at the time of her attack.

Noman had been walking for about two minutes up Birchmount Rd. when the incident occurred. After the attack, she crossed to the other side of the road and joined a group of children, she said. The second attack happened after Noman, her brother, and a group of children went to cross the light at Bay Mills Blvd. Zakariyya did not make the light in time to safely cross, and his sister waited for him to get across Birchmount. She was left alone, separated from the group, and the man attacked her a second time.

Her brother told reporters that he was frightened, and worried his sister would be hurt. “I’m so glad that she’s safe and I’m safe.”

Wearing a white hijab loaned from a friend, Noman quietly told reporters that the light blue hijab she wore to school now had a large cut in it, approximately 30 cm long. The blue hijab is now with police as evidence.

“What you’re doing is very wrong, you should stop doing this. I’m a kid,” the girl said to her attacker.

The girl said she’s confused and scared following the incident.

Speaking at the podium, the girl’s emotional mother told reporters she was “happy that she’s safe,” and said the community has been supportive of her daughter.

“I don’t know why he did that, it’s just not Canada. I’m so proud to be a Canadian, and I feel so safe in this community,” Samad said.

Samad said she grew up in Canada and has been here for 25 years, and has not seen this type of incident before.

“I’m frustrated and I’m angry, but I do believe in peace in Canada. I am so proud to be a Canadian, and I want to give him the same message,” she said.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne called the assault a “cowardly act of hatred”in a tweet posted Friday.

“This does not represent who we are. We must stand firm in our support of this young girl who was assaulted for simply wearing a hijab,” the premier wrote on Twitter.

  2. ‘Very brave Syrian reporter’ in WaPo tweet unmasked as jihadi propagandist (RT, Jan 12, 2018)
    https://www.rt.com/usa/415769-wapo-syrian-jihadi-supporter/

“The Washington Post bureau chief in Beirut commended the courage of a battlefield reporter in Syria, despite being informed the man is in fact a radical Islamist. She has refused to take back her words.

On January 11, Liz Sly retweeted a video featuring a man with a microphone cowering in front a camera in the middle of an airstrike, purportedly shot near the northern Syrian city of Idlib, a current focal point of fighting between the opposition and government forces.

“This Syrian journalist, standing in an open field while bombs explode all around him, is very lucky to be alive. No flak jacket or helmet. You can barely hear him above the explosions. He and his colleagues are very brave,” wrote Sly, who is responsible for the newspaper’s Syria and Iraq coverage.

“This Syrian journalist’s name is Tahir al-Umar and he is with Free Syrian TV,” she added in a later post.

Sly’s description was immediately challenged by other commenters, including several journalists, who noted that the protagonist of the footage, also known as Abu Omar, is not the posterboy of journalistic veracity she makes him out to be – but an Islamist cheerleader.

Omar does not conceal his allegiance, with many of the posts on his Twitter account praising the “sacrifices” of the “mujahideen” – the noble jihadists – and gloating over the enemy losses inflicted by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and other radical groups…”

  3. Illinois AG candidate robbed at gunpoint in Chicago during campaign photoshoot

A Democratic candidate running for Illinois attorney general was robbed at gunpoint Thursday during a campaign photoshoot in Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Aaron Goldstein, 42, and members of his campaign team were approached by three men in their early 20s. One of the men had a handgun and demanded Goldstein and the campaign aides turn over the camera equipment and other personal belongings, including their cell phones, which they did.

According to the Tribune, law enforcement sources confirmed that they had no one in custody and did not release a description of the suspects.

Goldstein’s campaign manager Robert Murphy, who was not with the candidate at the time, explained that he was taking promotional campaign photos with an “in-the-neighborhood kind of” message, according to the Tribune. The incident took place in Albany Park.

  5. IS-Hamas feud spills across the border (ahram, Jan 12, 2018)
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/287980/Egypt/Politics-/ISHamas-feud-spills-across-the-border.aspx

“The Islamic State (IS) affiliate Sinai Province last week posted a video of the execution of one of its Gazan members. In the video group members flank Moussa Abu Zamat as a young man named Mohamed Saad Al-Seidi recites why Abu Zamat had been sentenced to death. Abu Zamat was charged with delivering weapons to Hamas which is described in the video as an “apostate” group.

Abu Zamat was killed by a gunshot to his head fired by ex-Hamas member Mohamed Al-Degni. The family of the latter denounced him when they were informed their son had killed one of the “Hamas mujahideen”.

IS operations in Sinai are mutating. IS and its affiliates are targeting more civilians — a shift most dramatically signalled by the attack on Al-Rawda Mosque in Arish, which left more than 300 worshippers dead after Friday prayers on 24 November. They have also targeted Arish airport with a Kornet anti-tank guided missile.

It appears foreign elements are gaining more control within the ranks of the terrorist organisation. Group leaders increasingly have Palestinian, Iraqi and Saudi names…”

  6. Turkish writer Asli Erdogan: ‘Thousands of students are in jail for one tweet’ (france24, Jan 12, 2018)

“She has the same name and nationality as the Turkish president, but the similarities stop there. Writer Asli Erdogan is an outspoken critic of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s crackdown on opponents following the failed coup of July 2016.

Having just picked up the Simone de Beauvoir prize for Women’s Freedom in Paris, Erdogan tells FRANCE 24 about the situation facing intellectuals, journalists and students in Turkey – and about her upcoming trial.

“People are afraid to breathe,” she says. “Europe only hears about the writers, the journalists. But thousands of university students are in jail for just one tweet.””
