  1. Frankfurt Book Fair: Violence follows calls for ‘active debate’ (DW, Oct 14, 2017)
    http://www.dw.com/en/frankfurt-book-fair-violence-follows-calls-for-active-debate/a-40955476

“Organizers of the Frankfurt Book Fair have stood by their decision to invite far-right publishers in the name of freedom of speech. That freedom seems to have gotten out of control during scuffles over the weekend.

An appearance by controversial far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician Bjorn Höcke at the Frankfurt Book Fair on Saturday led to tumultuous scenes.

Höcke, who made headlines earlier this year by decrying the Holocaust Monument in Berlin as a “monument of shame,” was at the fair for the release of the book “Mit Linken leben” (“Living with Leftists”), published by right-wing publisher Antaios.

    ‘Nazis out!’

When protesters began shouting “Nazis out!” Höcke’s supporters retorted with “Everybody hates the Antifa!” They were referring to the radical left-wing anti-fascist movement that has now itself achieved international notoriety. Police were called to intervene. Later in the day, two authors from the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement were forced to abandon a reading due to loud protests…”

    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2017/10/231007/moroccan-anti-terror-bureau-arrests-11-suspected-of-planning-attacks-across-country/

“Morocco’s national security agency has confirmed that 11 suspected terrorists operating in several cities have been arrested.

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) issued a statement on Saturday shortly after online media outlets reported the dismantling of a terrorist cell in Fez, where two suspects were arrested and a quantity of firing weapons, knives, and explosives were seized.

“This preemptive operation once again confirms the dangerous impact of ISIS’s propaganda machine,” stated the DGSN. The agency said that the terrorist group had been urging its followers “to intensify terrorist attacks outside regions under its control as the grip tightens around it in Syria and Iraq.”

The arrested suspects, according to the release, were incited by one of ISIS’s field commanders to carry out terrorist attacks on Moroccan soil. The cell posed a huge threat, especially as one of its members is “highly experienced” in making bombs and explosives…”

  3. Egypt’s army thwarts attack in North Sinai’s Al-Arish (ahram, Oct 14, 2017)
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/278768/Egypt/Politics-/Egypts-army-thwarts-attack-in-North-Sinais-AlArish.aspx

“Egypt’s army said Saturday that it thwarted an attack Friday on a security checkpoint in North Sinai’s Al-Arish.

In an official statement, military spokesman Tamer El-Refaie said the army was able to foil an attack by “extremist elements wearing army uniforms and carrying improvised explosive devices (IEDs), hand grenades, and firearms.”

According to the statement, the militants were killed after their IEDs detonated as armed forces were combating them.

The number of the militants killed was not provided, with El-Refaie posting pictures of the militants’ corpses on the official page of the Egyptian armed forces.

The foiled attempt comes after an attack that killed six army personnel in the North Sinai city Friday.

A number of militants were killed and injured when army personnel returned fire…”

  4. 63 former police officers detained over FETÖ links (hurriyetdailynews, Oct 14, 2017)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/63-former-police-officers-detained-over-feto-links-120851

“Turkish security forces detained 63 former police officers linked to Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) in nationwide counter-terror operations, a security official said on Oct 14.

The former police officers were among 100 suspects held during simultaneous operations across 19 provinces, said the official.

The suspects — including former police chiefs — were allegedly using the ByLock mobile phone messaging app which FETÖ members used to communicate with each other during last July’s defeated coup.

The app is believed to have been cracked by Turkish security agencies, allowing them to identify tens of thousands of FETÖ supporters.”

  5. Qatar freezes all assets of Sheikh Abdullah al-Thani (saudigazette, Oct 14, 2017)
    http://saudigazette.com.sa/article/519407/World/Mena/Qatar-freezes-all-assets-of-Sheikh-Abdullah-al-Thani

“Qatar has reportedly frozen all assets belonging to Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali al-Thani, one of the most prominent figures from the ruling family to speak out against the government in the ongoing crisis involving Doha.

“The Qatari regime honors me by freezing all of my bank accounts, and I thank them for this honor and I have the honor to present it to the homeland,” al-Thani tweeted on Saturday.

“I hope that Qatar will expel opportunists and friends of interests and return to the Gulf embrace,” he added.

Al-Thani requested a national meeting with him regarding a crisis “which we can no longer remain silent on” last month.

The Qatari royal family member told Al Arabiya at the time that the situation surrounding the crisis was “getting worst” and is “pushing us to a fate we do not want to reach”.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani is the second son of the late Emir Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani, the grandson of the Emir of Qatar, Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, and the brother of Sheikh Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani, who was overthrown by his cousin Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, grandfather of Prince Tamim bin Hamad on February 22, 1972.

During the reign of Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Thani, the ruler of Qatar, Qatar witnessed a remarkable renaissance and a cultural shift in the production of oil from the fields of Dukhan al-Bari and marine fields.”

  6. UAE joins Saudi Arabia and Israel, to back Trump’s new Iran strategy (alaraby, Oct 14, 2017)
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2017/10/14/uae-joins-saudi-israeli-backing-of-trumps-aggressive-iran-strategy

“The UAE has joined Saudi Arabia and Israel in their backing of a controversial new stance by US President Donald Trump towards Iran.

Abu Dhabi said it approves of an announcement by Trump on Friday that he will refuse to re-certify the 2015 landmark deal between Iran and several world powers.

It also backs the more aggressive line taken by Trump towards the Tehran regime, including tough new sanctions against Iran’s Republican Guard Corps paramilitary force.

“For too long, the Iranian regime has spread destruction and chaos throughout the region and beyond. The nuclear deal – the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (formal title of nuclear agreement) – offered Iran an opportunity to engage responsibly with the international community,” read a statement by the UAE foreign ministry.

“Instead, it only emboldened Iran to intensify its provocative and destabilising behaviour.”

Abu Dhabi said Trump’s new strategy was essential to confront Iran’s “growing ballistic missile programme, support for terrorist organisations such as Hizballah and the Houthis, cyber-attacks, interference in its neighbours’ affairs, and threats to the freedom of navigation” a statement on UAE’s WAM state news agency read.

It follows applause from UAE’s key Gulf ally Saudi Arabia about Trump’s announcement on Friday evening, which has led to criticism from several US allies, including France and the UK…”

  7. Kurdish Peshmerga fighters reject Iraqi warning as deadline passes (middleeasteye, Oct 14, 2017)
    http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/kurdish-peshmerga-fighters-reject-iraqi-warning-deadline-passes-485975837

“Kurdish Peshmerga fighters rejected a warning from an Iraqi paramilitary force to withdraw from a strategic junction south of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, a Kurdish security official said early Sunday.

Popular Mobilisation, formed mainly by Iranian-trained Shia groups, had given the Peshmerga an early Sunday deadline to leave a position north of the Maktab Khalid junction, the official from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Security Council said.

The position controls the access to an airbase and some of the oilfields located in the region of Kirkuk, the official said. The city and its immediate surroundings, including the oilfields, are under Kurdish control.

There were no clashes reported about an hour after the deadline, but a resident said dozens of young Kurds were deployed around Kirkuk with machine guns as the news of the warning spread.

Fighting had erupted between Kurdish and Arab forces south of Kirkuk on Friday evening as Baghdad called for Kurds to abandoned territory captured in the disputed territory in 2014, according to a Kurdish official.

Clashes between Peshmerga (the military forces of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan) and the Shia-dominated Popular Mobilisation Units (PMUs) were on-going in early hours of Saturday in the town of Tuz Khurmatu, a Shia-majority town 89km south of Kirkuk.

“Hashd [PMUs] and Peshmerga are exchanging fire, using light weapons and rocket-propelled grenades,” said Mohammed Fayaq, spokesman for the Tuz Khurmatu mayor, according to Iraq Oil Report.

“It’s not a conventional urban war, but there has been shooting since about 8 o’clock this evening.”

At least eight people have been injured, according to an official at a local hospital. Fayaq said the fighting began after the PMUs attacked the headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in the town, which is ethnically composed of Kurds, Arabs and Turkmen…”

  8. UAE planned to invade Qatar with Blackwater-linked mercenaries: Report (middleeasteye, Oct 14, 2017)
    http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/uae-planned-invade-qatar-blackwater-linked-mercenaries-report-1742295879

“Qatar’s former deputy prime minister accused the United Arab Emirates of plotting to invade Doha with an army of mercenaries, according to a report.

Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah leveled the charges on Wednesday in a report published by Spanish daily ABC.

The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a blockade and economic sanctions on Qatar in June, accusing it of supporting “extremism” and being too close to Iran – changes Doha has denied.

Attiyah said that the UAE hired a “Blackwater-linked” private security contractor to train thousands of mercenaries to invade Qatar with the aim of overthrowing the emir and replacing him with a ruler subservient to the Saudi-led bloc that is boycotting the gas-rich state, the NewArab website reported…”

  9. LONDON TERROR FEARS: Now every ambulance will carry antidote kits for deadly nerve agents (express, Oct 14, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/866051/london-paramedics-chemical-weapons-antidote-terrorist-attack-vx-sarin

“LONDON paramedics are being issued with antidotes for deadly nerve agents in case the capital comes under chemical attack by terrorists.

Ambulance crews across the city are being kitted out with the auto-injector devices which counter the horrific effects of weapons like VX and sarin.

By the end of the year, every ambulance in the capital is due to be equipped with the kits.

This comes as a UK ambassador this week warned Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists have “the capability and intent to use chemical weapons”.

And although the manufacture and use of chemical weapons is banned by international law, unknown quantities are believed to be in unstable states across the globe, with especially large stockpiles thought to be in Syria and North Korea.

Both ISIS jihadis and Assad’s government forces have been accused of using the devastating weapons in Syria.

And two women are currently on trial in Malaysia charged with being part of a North Korean plot to assassinate Kim Jong-un’s half brother using VX.

Dr Fenella Wrigley, London Ambulance Service medical director, told Express: “As part of ongoing planned training, our frontline staff are being taught to use nerve agent antidote kits as part of a national programme.

“Once these kits are fully rolled out in December, the pen-like device will be available for our staff to use if they, or patients, are exposed to a nerve agent.”…”
