  5. Note in Las Vegas gunman’s hotel room included details of bullet trajectory

In their first in-depth interview, the officers who stormed Stephen Paddock’s hotel room reveal new details to “60 Minutes”

A note found in the hotel room of the man who shot into a crowd from his perch in a Las Vegas high-rise included hand-written calculations about where he needed to aim to maximize his accuracy and kill as many people as possible.

In an interview airing Sunday on “60 Minutes,” three police officers who stormed Stephen Paddock’s hotel room in the Mandalay Bay hotel tell correspondent Bill Whitaker new details about the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. The officers were the first to see Paddock’s body and the arsenal of weapons and ammunition he had stockpiled.

Officer David Newton from the Las Vegas Police Department’s K-9 unit said he noticed a note on the shooter’s nightstand once officers breached the room. He said the note was located near one of the windows that Paddock had smashed with a hammer to fire onto the crowd below with high-powered semi-automatic rifles outfitted to increase their rate of fire.

Barcelona, Spain (CNN)Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will consider taking the dramatic measure of suspending Catalonia’s autonomous status, as the region’s leaders escalate threats to declare independence from the country.
Spanish politics has been plunged into disarray since Catalonia held an independence referendum a week ago. Catalan leaders say the people voted overwhelmingly to split, but Madrid has declared the vote illegal.

High turnout represents rare show of strength for pro-union movement

BARCELONA—Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards gathered in Barcelona on Sunday to decry Catalonia’s secessionist push, a bid by pro-union groups to build momentum against a unilateral declaration of independence that could come as soon as this week.

The demonstration in central Barcelona, the capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, is a rare show of strength for the pro-union movement, whose gatherings have typically attracted several thousand protesters in recent years, compared with the hundreds of thousands routinely mobilized by pro-independence groups.

On Sunday, though, Barcelona’s streets were filled with an atypical sight: people waving red-and-yellow Spanish flags, unfurled alongside Catalan regional flags.

  11. Learning to speak like free men and women again
    By J.E. Dyer October 7, 2017

As so often happens these days, I read Peggy Noonan’s latest column with both enjoyment and mental dissent.

She wrote this week on “why Americans own so many guns.” And she got some things exactly right; in particular, a quotation from what she wrote after the Columbine attack 1999, in which she iterated the pollution kids imbibe from our corrupt popular culture. They are bombarded, she said, with “words like this, which I’ll limit to only one source, the news”:

. . . was found strangled and is believed to have been sexually molested . . . had her breast implants removed . . . took the stand to say the killer was smiling the day the show aired . . . said the procedure is, in fact, legal infanticide . . . is thought to be connected to earlier sexual activity among teens . . . court battle over who owns the frozen sperm . . . contains songs that call for dominating and even imprisoning women . . . died of lethal injection . . . had threatened to kill her children . . . had asked Kevorkian for help in killing himself . . . protested the game, which they said has gone beyond violence to sadism . . . showed no remorse . . . which is about a wager over whether he could sleep with another student . . .

This is the ocean in which our children swim. This is the sound of our culture.

That was in 1999. It has gotten worse since then. Not just children but everyone in our culture has had 18 more years of bombardment. Indeed, much of what we recognized as pollution in 1999 has become mainstream discourse in 2017. Unless you work consciously to keep your mind free of this pollution, it comes to own you.

  12. FBI issues warning on ‘Black Identity Extremists’
By LU Staff October 8, 2017

The FBI Counterterrorism Division warned about the potential violence that could come from members of “Black Identity Extremists” (BIE), according to a document obtained by Foreign Policy.

The Aug. 3 document warns of the potential violence that members of the BIE movement could possibly perform against American law enforcement officers, Foreign Policy reported Friday.

“The FBI assesses it is very likely Black Identity Extremist (BIE) perceptions of police brutality against African Americans spurred an increase in premeditated, retaliatory lethal violence against law enforcement and will very likely serve as justification for such violence,” the document read. Foreign Policy notes that the document was marked for official use.

The FBI report points to the 2014 Ferguson shooting of Michael Brown as the start of the anger and violence on the part of the BIE movement. Police brutality only helped fuel the anger, the FBI noted in the report.

“The FBI assesses it is very likely incidents of alleged police abuse against African Americans since then have continued to feed the resurgence in ideologically motivated, violent criminal activity within the BIE movement,” the report read.

“The Istanbul prosecutor’s office is charging Amnesty International’s Turkey chief and 10 others for allegedly belonging to and aiding terror groups with the completion of an indictment Sunday, according to the country’s official news agency.

The Anadolu news agency said officials concluded an investigation into the 11 human rights activists, who are now awaiting trial. The 17-page indictment was prepared by the prosecutor’s office’s terror crimes branch.

Police detained 10 human rights activists during a workshop on digital security at a hotel near Istanbul in July. Eight people, including Amnesty International’s director in Turkey Idil Eser, German Peter Steudtner and Swede Ali Gharavi, were arrested. Two others were detained but released pending trial.

They are accused of aiding armed terror organizations in alleged communications with suspects linked to Kurdish and left-wing militants as well as the movement led by U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of orchestrating last year’s coup attempt. Gulen has denied the accusations.

The indictment includes a “secret witness” who claimed the activists were engaged in illegal activities during the workshop, according to Anadolu.

    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/10/08/hillary-clinton-demeans-brexit-voters-disgusted-nigel-farage/

“Failed U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has attacked Brexit voters, claiming they fell for a “horrible lie” and voted against “modern Britain” because of small-town concerns.

The former first lady also blamed her electoral loss on the e-mail scandal, alleged Russian influence, and host of other factors in an interview with The Sunday Times to promote her new book.

Speaking about the European Union (EU) referendum’s relationship to the U.S. presidential election, she said: “Brexit should have been a bigger alarm than it was.”

Adding: “It was some of the same people working for Trump, advocating for him.

“They thought, ‘Hey, we’ve got this figured out, just tell a really horrible lie over and over again, keep people off balance and make them think that this will, if not make their lives better, make them feel better.’

“They voted against modern Britain and the EU, believing that somehow this would be good for their small village. It made no sense.

“The same thing played out in my race, but I didn’t think we were so vulnerable. But it turned out we were wrong — in part because the Russians played a much bigger role.”

The Brexit supporters (“they”) who she refers to include ‘Mr. Brexit’ Nigel Farage, who also backed the Trump campaign, and was spoken about “in disgust” by Mrs. Clinton, according to the interviewer.

“He came to the U.S. to campaign for Trump and spent half of his remarks insulting me in a very personal way and talking about Trump as the alpha male, the silver-backed gorilla.

“Think of those images and what that says about what’s acceptable and what’s not.”

Mr. Fagage responded to the comments on his LBC radio show, saying Mrs. Clinton should rename her forthcoming book “The Great Big Whinge”.

  18. Migrants Threaten Swedish Migration Board Employees with Rape, Violence (breitbart, Oct 8, 2017)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/10/08/migrants-threaten-female-swedish-migration-board-employees-rape-violence/

“In the first nine months of 2017, the Swedish migration board has reported 2,875 serious incidents against their staff including threats of rape and assault, and threats to set fire to their offices.

Particularly worrying for the female employees of the migration board, which handles all the country’s asylum claims, has been the number of sexual harassment incidents from migrants. So far, there have been 15 cases of sexual harassment including one in which a migrant threatened to rape a female employee, Aftonbladet reports.

Maria Johansson, working environment specialist at the Swedish Migration Board, said the incidents “can be anything including an inappropriate comment related to a sexual act. This is not a common problem with us, but it is serious when it happens.”

Threats often come via email and over the telephone, with one female employee being verbally abused over the telephone when a migrant yelled, “What do you doing you fucking pussy?!” before hanging up.

A case in Södermanland during the summer saw a female employee followed by a migrant man as she was going outside for fresh air. She decided to ignore him and look at her mobile phone but he started kissing her hand and then trying to kiss her on the lips before she pushed him off.

In central Norrland, an aggressive migrant showed up at a migration board office and when security guards confronted him he not only threatened to kill them but turned to a female guard and told her he would find her address and rape her. The asylum seeker was later arrested and convicted for uttering threats.

Another female officer in the Stockhold area reported being followed on public transport. Although she asked the man to stop following her, he continued to harass her and told her that he knew she worked at the migration board.

“He threatened to throw me in front of the train,” the woman said.

When the train arrived, he reiterated that he wanted to accompany her home before he disappeared.

The migration office worker added: “I felt uneasy when I went to work the next day.”

Another report from an employee claimed that a migrant had called her at the migration board office 166 times in the span of only an hour and made threats against her.

Threats against employees or volunteers working with migrants can sometimes lead to brutal crimes. Over the past two years, several women working with asylum seekers have been killed by them.

The most known case in Sweden was that of asylum centre worker Alexandra Mezher who was killed by a Somalian man who lied about being underage.

In Germany asylum shelter volunteer Maria Ladenburger was raped and killed by an Afghan migrant who also admitted he lied about being underage.”

“Tehran has warned it may begin to equate US forces to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) if a report is true that Washington will include the elite wing of the Iranian Army in the list of terrorist organizations.

The possible designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group, among other measures against Tehran, was reported by the Financial Times, citing a source “briefed on the matter.”

US President Donald Trump also accused Iran of supporting terrorism and vowed to “put an end to Iran’s continued aggression and nuclear ambitions.”

Revolutionary Guard chief Mohammad Ali Jafari said that if these reports of the United States’ “stupidity” are true, it will equate US troops, especially in the Middle East, to IS terrorists.

    https://sputniknews.com/us/201710081058055574-us-turkey-visa-services-suspended-security/

“The United States mission in Ankara said it has suspended visa services in Turkey several days after a US consulate employee was arrested in Istanbul over alleged links to Islamic cleric Gulen, accused by Ankara of being behind the failed coup attempt in 2016.

“Recent events have forced the United States government to reassess the commitment of government of Turkey to the security of U.S. mission and personnel,” the statement by the US mission in Ankara said.

    • US suspends visa services in Turkey over arrest of its consulate employee

The U.S. embassy in Ankara said Sunday that all non-immigrant visa services in its diplomatic facilities in Turkey were suspended after the arrest of one of its employees over the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) ties.

A statement released by the embassy said: “Recent events have forced the U.S. government to reassess the commitment of the Government of Turkey to the security of the U.S. Mission facilities and personnel.”

The statement said the suspension, effective immediately, is intended to minimize the number of visitors to the consulate and embassy buildings.

Metin Topuz, a Turkish employee working in the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul was arrested on charges of espionage and links to FETÖ, the group blamed for the July 15, 2016 coup attempt that killed 249 people in Turkey.

According to the indictment, the suspect was in contact with a number of former police chiefs in Istanbul where he worked, and all those police chiefs involved in the 2013 coup attempts were FETÖ members in the judiciary and law enforcement.

He was also in touch with Oktay Akkaya, a former lieutenant colonel who was among the main actors in the 2016 coup attempt.

“The suspect acted as a liaison between members of FETÖ and its leader, Fetullah Gülen, who lives in Pennsylvania,” the indictment adds, claiming there is strong evidence to justify Topuz’s arrest.

U.S. mission to Turkey suspends visa services for security reasons

ANKARA (Reuters) – The U.S. mission to Turkey said on Sunday it was reducing visa services after one of its employees was detained last week, saying it needed to “reassess” Turkey’s commitment to the security of its personnel.

Last week, a U.S. consulate employee in Istanbul was arrested on charges of links to a cleric blamed for last year’s failed coup, a move condemned by Washington as baseless and damaging to ties between the NATO allies.

“Recent events have forced the United States government to reassess the commitment of government of Turkey to the security of U.S. mission and personnel,” the statement by the mission in Ankara said.

“In order to minimize the number of visitors to our embassy and consulates while this assessment proceeds, effective immediately we have suspended all non-immigrant visa services at all U.S. diplomatic facilities in Turkey.”

The state-run Anadolu news agency identified the consulate employee as a male Turkish citizen and said he was arrested late on Wednesday on charges of espionage and attempts to damage the constitutional order and Turkey’s government.

U.S.-Turkish tensions have risen over U.S. military support for Kurdish YPG fighters in Syria, considered by Ankara to be an extension of the banned PKK, which has waged an insurgency for three decades in southeast Turkey.

Turkey has also pressed, so far in vain, for the United States to extradite Fethullah Gulen over the July 2016 putsch, in which more than 240 people were killed. Gulen denies any involvement.

    • Turkey halts all visa services for American citizens in US

Turkey said Sunday it was halting all visa services for Americans at its diplomatic missions in the US in a tit-for-tat move after Washington made a similar announcement earlier in the day.

“Recent events have forced the Turkish Government to reassess the commitment of the Government of the US to the security of the Turkish Mission facilities and personnel,” a statement posted on the Twitter account of the Turkish embassy in Washington DC said, closely mimicking the earlier US notification.

“In order to minimize the number of visitors to our diplomatic and consular missions in the US while this assessment proceeds, effective immediately we have suspended all visa services regarding the US citizens at our diplomatic and consular missions,” it added.

The Turkish restrictions appeared to go further than a move by the US to suspend the processing of “non-immigrant” visas, a specific category that relates to tourism, medical treatment, business, temporary work or study.

Immigrant visa services are for those seeking to live in the US permanently.

A first version of the Turkish statement that was posted on the embassy’s Twitter account on Sunday afternoon had said the measure would apply “to visas in passports.”

But a later version said: “This measure will apply to sticker visas as well as e-Visas and border visas,” leaving open the question of whether US travelers who already have visas would be allowed to enter Turkey.

The statement also specifically alluded to American citizens applying for visas from within the US, and was not clear whether it applied to those applying from other countries.

The US had announced its suspension following the arrest of a Turkish member of staff working at the US consulate in Istanbul.

The employee was remanded in custody by an Istanbul court late Wednesday on accusations of links to the group of US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen, blamed by Ankara for last year’s failed coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

  27. Pakistani women are living in ‘entirely different society’ and are ‘shockingly badly integrated’ in Britain says official audit (dailymail, Oct 8, 2017)
    http://dailym.ai/2y7Z6KC

“Pakistani women living in the UK are ‘shockingly badly integrated’, a Cabinet Office survey is set to reveal.

The findings of the UK’s first disparity audit, published in full on Tuesday, hope to shed better light on how people from different backgrounds are treated in regards to their access to healthcare, education, employment and the criminal justice system.

For women of Pakistani origin, the audit has revealed a particularly ‘shocking’ situation.

A source close to the Cabinet Office told The Sunday Times: ‘Other communities have integrated very well, but the audit shows that Pakistani women who don’t speak English or go out to work are living in an entirely different society and are shockingly badly integrated.’

The findings coincide with an independent report from the Women’s Budget Group and the Runnymede Trust, also due to be published this week, which will reveal those hardest hit by cuts to benefits and public services are likely from Asian families.

Asian households will be £11,678 worse off overall by 2020, compared with a fall of £6,199 across the decade for white families.

The audit was launched last August by Theresa May on the back of a pledge to address injustices in UK society.

At the time she said: ‘This audit will reveal difficult truths, but we should not be apologetic about shining a light on injustices as never before.

‘It is only by doing so we can make this country work for everyone, not just a privileged few.’
Earlier this week, the findings of a review on employment showed significant divisions between white Britons and black and ethnic minority people.

The results, to be released on a new website, Ethnicity Facts and Figures, revealed white Britons are more likely to own their home and have a job than minorities but less likely to go to university if they attend state school.

The ‘unprecedented’ audit of the record of schools, hospital, employers and courts and other services also showed nine in 10 headteachers are white British.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people is nearly double that of white British adults, 8 per cent compared to 4.6 per cent.

While two in three white adults own their home, only two in five of householders from any other ethnic group do.

The latest survey findings follow in the wake of Dame Louise Casey’s major review on community integration, published in December 2016.

Dame Louise, the Government’s integration tsar, said Britain needed to be ‘less shy’ in setting out rules and expectations for immigrants and called for introducing an oath of allegiance.

She added that it would be ‘no bad thing’ to accompany it with lessons in the ‘British way of life’, as well as helping migrants to develop their English language skills.

Speaking to MPs earlier this year, she likened integration to a ‘bloody big motorway’ with a ‘slip road of people coming in from the outside’.

‘People in the middle have got to accommodate and be gentle and be kind to people coming in the outside lane but we are all heading in the same direction… of course they have to adjust a little bit but the majority moves in the same direction,’ she said.

Dame Louise also criticised the Government’s approach to integration, saying there had been too much of a ‘saris, samosas and steel drums’ policy, rather than real leadership.”

  31. Daily Mail – The Koran is not very enjoyable, says Salman Rushdie: Author risks angering Islamists again with his comments about the holy book

The Man Booker prize winner said editing the Koran would be ‘a mug’s game’
At the Cheltenham Literature Festival he slammed it for not being narrative
The 70-year-old had a price put on his head after publishing The Satanic Verses

He spent more than a decade in hiding after his ‘blasphemous’ novel led a Muslim leader to put a price on his head.

But almost 30 years after writing The Satanic Verses, Sir Salman Rushdie has risked angering Islamists again by saying he could not face reading the ‘unenjoyable’ Koran.

Asked if Islam’s central text should be edited to make the religion seem ‘more humane’, the Man Booker prize winner replied: ‘Editing the Koran seems like a mug’s game.

‘It’s not a very enjoyable book because most of it is not narrative.

‘The big difference between the Old Testament, the New Testament and the Koran is that the Koran has the least narrative of them.

‘Only about a quarter of the book is stories.

A third of the book is fulminations against the unbeliever and how they will rot in hell. Another third of the book is laws, how you should behave.

‘So no I wouldn’t edit it because then I’d have to read it, and I don’t want to do that.’

Sir Salman, who was speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival at the weekend, added that he thinks the world would be a better place without any religion ‘because it is an absurdity that gets people killed.’

The 70-year-old spent years living under 24-hour police protection after the publication of his 1988 novel, which was inspired in part by the life of the Prophet Mohammed.

It provoked protests across the world from outraged Muslims who claimed it insulted the prophet and accused Sir Salman of mocking their faith.

The row culminated in February 1989 with Sir Salman being condemned to death by Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who issued a fatwa – a legal pronouncement by an expert in religious law – calling for his execution.

He offered a million US dollars to anyone who would murder the author.
Sir Salman later blamed the presence of his police guards – part of one of Britain’s most costly and elaborate protection operations – for the breakdown of his marriage to American author Marianne Wiggins.

Though he issued an apology in Iran in 1990 – which was rejected – Sir Salman later condemned Islamic fundamentalism as a ‘project of tyranny and unreason which wishes to freeze a certain view of Islamic culture in time’.

During his appearance at the literary festival, Sir Salman, whose latest novel The Golden House is set in his home city of New York, also commented on the presidency of Donald Trump.

The Indian-born writer said: ‘There is a lot of us who were worried about the travel ban and America is a difficult country to get in and out of if you come from certain places or have certain types of ethnicity. [But] They can’t stop me now because I have got a passport – and New York is not Trumpistan.’
