  1. Calls To Imprison “Climate Change Deniers” Grow In The Wake Of Hurricane Irma

When retired Georgia Tech professor Judith Curry penned a blog post on her “Climate Etc.” website suggesting that it was scientifically irresponsible to tie the intensity of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma directly to climate change, she probably didn’t expect that she might trigger 1,000’s of progressives to call for her immediate imprisonment. Unfortunately, for both Curry and society at large, that is exactly what happened.

Here is part of Curry’s post that potentially resulted in this latest ‘mass-triggering’ event:

It is premature to conclude that human activities–and particularly greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming–have already had a detectable impact on Atlantic hurricane or global tropical cyclone activity. That said, human activities may have already caused changes that are not yet detectable due to the small magnitude of the changes or observational limitations, or are not yet confidently modeled (e.g., aerosol effects on regional climate).

As the Washington Times notes, Curry’s comments only served to further enrage Al Gore’s climate change crusaders who promptly ramped up their calls to imprison anyone with the audacity to present any data and/or question, in any way, climate models which should be accepted as proven fact…even though they’re subjective and highly sensitive any number of input variables.

    • Imprisonment?!? Hell, try execution!

From the link: It is as inevitable as the rising of the sun; the Left, when thwarted in their quest for power, suggests the use of lethal force to compel those who disagree.

There is a nauseating litany of murders done by our betters in their pursuit of the Benthamite vision of “the greatest good for the most people” — which in their minds equates to collectivization and socialism. You have Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Margaret Sanger, Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot. Now we can add one more name to the list: Professor Richard Parncutt, Musicologist at Graz University in Austria.

Parncutt has issued — and later retracted after it the public outcry — a manifesto calling for the execution of prominent “Climate Change Deniers”. What is interesting is that Parncutt hates the death penalty and supports Amnesty International’s efforts to end it.

This would be a shocking thing for a college professor to do were it an isolated incident, but this call has been made a number of times in the past. For instance, an anonymous poster at the liberal website Talking Points Memo called for similar action, as did Climate Progress editor Joe Romm, who called for “deniers” to be strangled in their beds. Grist magazine writer David Roberts called for Nuremberg trials for “deniers” and NASA’s James Hansen has likewise called for similar trials.

The violent rhetoric has been ongoing — and disturbing. Liberals in the United States have repeatedly tried to blame mass shootings on talk radio for inflaming the public, yet they are strangely silent about actual calls to violence on the part of environmentalists.

Turkey will take its own security measures after Russia defense deal: Erdogan

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan greets mayors from his ruling AK Party during a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Ankara, Turkey, September 13, 2017

ANKARA (Reuters) – President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday dismissed NATO allies’ concern over Turkey’s deal to buy a missile defense system from Russia and said Ankara would continue to take the security measures it thought right.

Turkey, whose relations with its allies have frayed in recent months, said it opted for the S-400 because Western companies had offered no “financially effective” alternative. But NATO officials have voiced disquiet over the purchase of missiles incompatible with alliance systems.

“They went crazy because we made the S-400 agreement. What were we supposed to do, wait for you? We are taking and will take all our measures on the security front,” Erdogan said in a speech in Ankara.

Western firms which had bid for the contract included U.S. firm Raytheon (RTN.N), which put in an offer with its Patriot missile defense system. Franco-Italian group Eurosam, owned by the multinational European missile maker MBDA and France’s Thales TCFP.PA, came second in the tender.

Turkey, with the second-largest army in the alliance, has enormous strategic importance for NATO, abutting as it does Syria, Iraq and Iran. But the relationship has become fractious.

      • I wonder which way he is planning on aiming the missiles…
I really think NATO should cut a deal with Jordan and move out of Turkey. Erdogan is out of control.

        • Erodgan is a danger to the region and if allowed to gain more power and weapons (North Korean nukes springs to mind) he will be a danger to the world.

Given the developing situation in the Middle East Jordan would love to have a lot of NATO troops in their country. The only problem is that Jordan isn’t on the sea which complicates the initial deployment and resupply issue. Granted supplies could be landed in Israel and trucked into Jordan but this makes the political situation much more complicated. Neither Jordan or Saudi can be see as open allies of Israel.

  2. Campus Censorship: Orwell Ignored

    by Robbie Travers

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/10991/campus-censorship-travers

When you hear the quite horrific stories of censorship and dangerous restrictions on expression at universities in the US, the UK and Europe, your first reaction might be to laugh at how infantile the nature of political discourse in the student world has become.

Cardiff Metropolitan University banned the use of the word “man” and related phrases, to encourage the adoption of “gender neutral” language. It is the equivalent of the “newspeak” about which Orwell warned: “Ambiguous euphemistic language used chiefly in political propaganda”.

Currently, longstanding expressions carrying no prejudice are now used as the trappings of often fictitious “oppressions.”

City University in London, renowned for its journalism school, is apparently banning newspapers that do not conform to the current student body’s various political biases. If the Sun, Daily Mail and Express are such bad publications, why not allow students to read them and make up their own minds? Perhaps students do not trust their peers to make up their own minds? What if they make up their minds the “wrong” way? To suggest that the brightest and best at our universities cannot contend with a dissenting argument should probably be at least slightly concerning.

There seems to be a growing consensus among student populations that certain views should not be challenged, heard or — if one does not hear them — even known.

  3. Indonesian woman lashed 100 times for ‘being in presence of man she was not married to’ (independent, Sep 12, 2017)
    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/woman-caning-100-times-hospital-indonesia-aceh-shariah-law-a7943491.html

“An Indonesian woman was reportedly hospitalised after she was lashed 100 times in public, as punishment for being caught in a private place with a man she was not married to.

Named only as Mazidah, the 30-year-old’s caning was watched by thousands in Lhokseumawe, a city in the strongly conservative province of Aceh.

It took place after Friday prayers and had to be occasionally paused because she was crying out in agony, Australian broadcaster, ABC reported.

The man she was found with also received a lashing but did not need hospital treatment. A third man found guilty of another crime was also flogged.

Public canings, used as a punishment for the violation of Islamic law, are common in Aceh, with 339 taking place last year, according to the Institute of Criminal Justice Reform, a think-tank based in the country’s capital, Jakarta.

It is the only province in the country where they are used.

But human rights campaigners fear they could be occurring with increasing frequency…”
