Korea updates Sept. 3 2017

1. M6.3 magnitude quake confirmed to be North Korean explosion, likely nuclear, possibly hydrogen bomb.

2. From Fox News:

Quake in North Korea may have been nuclear test

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake was detected in northern North Korea on Sunday, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.3.

The quake was detected at 12:36 p.m. in North Korea’s North Hamgyeong province, Yonhap reported, citing information from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Reuters gave the location as 55 kilometers north northwest of Kimchaek, citing U.S. Geological Survey information. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, the news agency said.

Japan stated that if it was confirmed to be a nuclear test, it would be “absolutely unacceptable”, whatever that means.

3. Sunday Express:

North Korea readies HYDROGEN BOMB as Kim Jong-un ‘watches loading into ICBM’

North Korea has said it has created a hydrogen bomb with great ‘destructive power’

North Korea has said it has developed a more advanced nuclear weapon that has “great destructive power” amid World War 3 fears.

Kim Jong-un’s state media mouthpiece NCNA declared the hydrogen bomb’s power is adjustable to hundreds of kilotons and can be detonated at high altitudes.

It also boasted that these latest components would allow the country to build as many nuclear weapons as it wants.

KCNA reported: “Kim Jong-un said he felt the pride at the indomitably bolstering up of [North Korea’s] nuclear forces despite a great price as he watched the Juche-oriented thermonuclear weapon with super explosive power mad

4. NKorea missile fear sets pre-emptive strike debate in Japan

(Richard points out that this debate is an important one to follow, as its post WW2 policies exist for a reason and to change those has meaning.)

TOKYO (AP) — Japan is debating whether to develop a limited pre-emptive strike capability and buy cruise missiles – ideas that were anathema in the pacifist country before the North Korea missile threat.

With revisions to Japan’s defense plans underway, ruling party hawks are accelerating the moves, and some defense experts say Japan should at least consider them.

Japan has a two-step missile defense system, including interceptors on destroyers in the Sea of Japan that would shoot down projectiles mid-flight and if that fails, surface-to-air PAC-3s on land.

5. UK says North Korea nuclear test is reckless, could bring a “new order of threat”

LONDON, Sept 3 (Reuters) – North Korea’s latest nuclear test could represent a new order of threat, Britain’s foreign minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday.

“There’s no question that this is another provocation, it’s reckless,” he told Sky news. “They seem to be moving closer towards a hydrogen bomb which, if fitted to a successful missile, would unquestionably present a new order of threat.”

Pyongyang conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test earlier on Sunday.

He said Britain’s preference was for a diplomatic solution and that none of the military options relating to North Korea were palatable. (Reporting by William James; editing by John Stonestreet)

(And the beggar’s preference is for a horse. But if he sits around wishing for one he likely will never achieve his destination. Palatable or no, a solution that does not result in a nuclear strike against a city outside North Korea must be done. It is possible to eliminate the nuclear potential of NORK and take out the administration without destroying all the slave labour camps and so on which a lot of the more or less innocent North Korean populations live in. But something permanent has to be done. Something with strategic certainty.)

6. ‘We’ll see’: Trump refuses to be drawn on whether US will attack North Korea for detonating hydrogen bomb but warns America may stop ‘ALL trade with any country doing business with Kim’

Both economic and military action could be in store for North Korea after its detonation of a 100-kiloton nuclear bomb, Donald Trump has hinted.

The president remained tight-lipped amid claims that America is gearing up for military intervention as he left church on Sunday morning.

When asked whether the US would make a preemptive strike on North Korea after its nuclear test caused a 6.5-magnitude earthquake, Trump – who was leaving church – only said: ‘We’ll see.’

But in a pair of tweets afterwards, he said: ‘I will be meeting General Kelly, General Mattis and other military leaders at the White House to discuss North Korea. Thank you.

7. North Korea says 6th nuke test was H-bomb, ‘perfect success’

8. NYT: North Korea Says It Tested a Hydrogen Bomb Meant for Missiles

9. North Korea says it successfully tested hydrogen bomb; Trump denounces its ‘hostile’ behavior

“North Korea said Sunday that it successfully conducted a test of a hydrogen bomb meant to be loaded onto an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The announcement was made on state-run television. A news reader called the test a “complete success” and said the “two-stage thermonuclear weapon” had “unprecedented” strength. North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un ordered the test, according to the announcement.

It is the rogue nation’s sixth, and most powerful, nuclear test.

President Trump responded on Twitter, commenting on North Korea’s continuing “hostile and dangerous” actions toward the U.S. and its being a “great threat and embarrassment to China.” The president also said South Korea’s “talk of appeasement” with its northern neighbor won’t work.

Thank you all for your diligence in following and posting these links. Unless something major happens concerning Korea in the next few hours, please post all Korea related news to the comments under this post.

This just in. I have no idea what she is saying, But I would not buy a used car from her.

It is alleged to be the new hydrogen bomb in the hundred kiloton range the NORKS tested.

  1. 100 kt yield? Gotta be an H-Bomb. Amazing they could do this when India & Pakistan haven’t done this. ROK and Japan will eventually have to consider their own thermonuclear deterrence, especially if the US decides to pullback on the premise that this is a problem for the locals.

I guess there really aren’t any H-Bomb secrets as 60 some years of history shows that it is apparently now an engineering problem rather than a science problem for government levels of support.

The American homeland badly needs BMD around it’s cities; Chicago once had Nike-Hercules Army missiles to defend against Soviet nuclear attack.

    • ROK and Japan will eventually have to consider their own thermonuclear deterrence, especially if the US decides to pullback on the premise that this is a problem for the locals.

There are many problems with that suggestion:

      1) This would require the US to pull out of all of our mutial defense treaties with everyone, I say everyone. I say everyone because our pulling back would prove that not only are the Democrats not going to protect our allies neither are the Republicans, which in turn means that we (the US) will have to go it alone in all future wars. We could do this only if we had the entire population supporting us in the war, which given the current internal situation is unlikely.

      2) As Eeyore said in the comments thread I pointed out that after WWII Japan renounced the use of force except in self defense and then only in Japanese waters. During the Clinton era Japan started building military vessels but have made no move to man the completed vessels. What they are now doing is discussing building long range cruise missiles and changing their Constitution to allow them to use preventive strikes on enemies that are threatening Japan. This will call for a radical rethink by the Japanese people and lays Japan open for a return to the Imperial goals of the early 20th Century. In case you are thinking that this is impossible right now the idea of an Empire is foreign to the US physic but that hasn’t stopped the neocons and some of the left working on nation building. Since the governments they want to build are mirror images of the US government they are in effect trying to establish a loose coalition of nations that resemble the US and are to an extent Puppet States of the US. In other words a semi soft Empire.

      3) Pulling back would do no good since North Korea, Iran and China now either have or are about to acquire ICBMs that will allow them to reach any location on earth with a nuclear warhead. This gives a new definition to local.

      4) If the US pulls out of the Far East everyone tin pot Dictator will start working to acquire nuclear weapons and missiles so they can blackmail the reat of the world. This increases the chances of a major nuclear exchange.

      5) North Korea and Iran are close allies, what one has the other has and we are actively engaged in fighting the Islamist’s in the Middle East. Pulling out of the Far East would mean that Iran would push harder to get us to pull out of the Middle East and then start attacking us inside the US with the terrorists and commandos they have infiltrated. Once again increasing the danger of a massive nuclear exchange. Although I will admit that more attacks in the US will pull the vast majority of the US citizens behind Donald Trump and his policies.

      6) If we pull back this means the US is finished as a nation and will break up into smaller nations that will be at war with each other for a long time. Like Trevor Loudon said, if the US goes everything goes. Love us or Hate us right now we are the center of civilization and if we fall there is no one to step into the void, India can’t, China can’t our fall will create even greater chaos then WWIII will. It will also make WWIII worse. Also it would remove the only location that the native Europeans have a hope of finding refuge in if they have to run from thei rnations.

Bearing with your reasonable logic, Richard, one of the only alternatives is to place American nuclear arms on South Korean and Japanese soil (preferably including Taiwan). Given Japan’s persisting trauma about atomic weapons, they seem an unlikely candidate for this strategy.

Among the very few other options is maintaining a nuclear-capable Naval force in the region—a very expensive proposition, indeed. I reluctantly agree with you about the maintenance of America’s nuclear umbrella. Folding that up would send one of the worst possible messages to our allies and enemies alike.

This is why I damn Clinton, Bush 2.0, and 0bama so repeatedly. Their triple-whammy of ham-fisted Globalist foreign policy totally compromised America’s ability to adequately perform the role of global cop. As you yourself noted (and I have been asking for several years now) about those who would provide world security, “If not America, then who?”

Like nature, power abhors a vacuum. The mere notion of Red China or Russia assuming that role is vomit-worthy. Either one of those tyrannies would gleefully unleash rogue régimes like North Korea or Iran to further destabilize an already faltering world. With the Islamic invasion of Europe and ongoing attempts to supplant the dollar as a universal reserve currency, China’s recent strategy of bracketing critical maritime chokepoints (e.g., The Malacca Strait and Suez Canal) is rapidly taking on an outsized strategic aspect.

This is why I continue to recommend—and am exceedingly glad to see Trump mentioning—a comprehensive economic boycott of Communist China. They are the kingpin linchpin in this geopolitical equation. Unlike Russia, Beijing alone has the military strength, geographic positioning, disposable manpower, and long-term determination to exert global dominance.

Sidebar: Between an epidemic of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and a subpar population replacement rate, Russia is in no position to rival Red China when it comes to supplanting the USA as this world’s policeman.

Personally, I regard this as a last-gasp effort by Red China to acquire (or subjugate) vassal states and gain a sufficient amount of maneuvering-space which is required to release some of the internal pressures that currently are taking that Asian country to the brink of all-out war, revolution or economic collapse (or all three). One need only examine the immense dissatisfaction of Beijing’s subsidiary African clients to instantly recognize the complete lack of mutual regard in any efforts on that continent.

As an aside, in a conversation with a woman from Kenya, I asked her, “After experiencing Communist China’s economic intervention will the African people, at some future point in time, long for the “good old days” of European colonialism?” Without blinking an eye, she replied, “You’d better believe it!”

This is just one of many reasons why it remains so imperative to collapse Red China’s economic house-of-cards at the soonest possible moment. It is mentally unworkable to decouple this current crisis in North Korea from Beijing’s desperate attempts at directing the world’s attention away from internal crises that threaten the very foundations of their Communist party.

At present, hundreds of millions of Chinese people have disengaged or renounced their membership in the Communist party. I invite you to do a search on “dark factories”. [Please pardon my impatience with this site’s three-link-trigger for moderation.] The term “dark factory’ refers to how advanced manufacturing robotics can operate with little or no overhead illumination.

Red China is striving to implement highly automated production facilities. These installations will require a minimum of human intervention, save at a bare maintenance level. All of which flies in the face of ancient Sino traditions that avoid breaking “rice bowls”. As in, government jobs have long been regarded as “cast iron rice bowls” (i.e., positions that cannot be lost—especially those of the Communist apparatchiks).

What happens to the rapidly ascending and economically aspiring Chinese middle class when all of those factories go “dark”? This is what lends such an air of urgency regarding Red China’s overweening attempts to position itself as a superpower.

Crushing Communist China’s economy right now—before its people have become burdensome superfluities to the Politburo’s wealth-generating machine—would be a mercy compared to what awaits these workers and middle managers once they have become redundant. The mass-executions and overall reduction in everybody’s quality of life within the Middle Kingdom would make America’s recent economic decline look like a Sunday picnic.

Conjoin these looming economic crises with Red China’s recent (aggressive) military adventures and a grim picture emerges of a faltering régime—groping about in a jam-packed powder magazine—which is ready to find its way by lighting a match.

        • Your solution is the best of a bad lot, the problem is I doubt that we have time enough for this to work. China knows it is on its last legs and is playing the waiting game and will not turn loose of Kim’s leash until the last minute. They hope that by then they will have found a solution that will let their current government maintain control. Russia knows it is in no position to replace the US and the dominate power in the world and probably wants the US to take China out of the game and weaken ourselves to the point that Russia is closer to our power level.

We can return our tactical and stratigic nuclear weapons to South Korea (with their permission and given Kim’s actions this shouldn’t be hard to get) and if I have my way to Taiwan also. The Taiwanese government will probably leap at the chance of having a nuclear deterrent on their soil. The presence in the two nations will cause China to pull back from a lot of confrontations and might even get Kim’s attention since we are more likely to respond to a nuclear attack on one of our Asian allies from Asian soil. This was the reason we moved a lot of nuclear capable missiles to Western Europe in the 80s.

The Jokers in the deck are Pakistan and Iran, both are nuclear armed and while I doubt that China gave Kim the technology to build a H Bomb (they might be that desperate).

Pakistan and Iran are also in that position of maybe having the capabilities of building H bombs along with ordinary nuclear devices. We don’t know how much control Russia has over Iran and if/when China collapses their control over Pakistan also collapses. If we can take out North Korea before Kim can launch (we have a real good chance of being able to do this using conventional weapons) What will Pakistan and Iran do? Do their technological benefactors have enough power to prevent them from launching or will they decide to use them or lose them? If they decide to use them who will they launch on? Will Pakistan launch on India and Iran? Where will Iran target?

When we take out Kim what will Europe do? What will the Islamic Invaders in Europe and North America do?

  2. Mattis: NKorea threat would bring massive military response

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Sunday shot back at North Korea’s claimed test of a hydrogen bomb with a blunt threat, saying the U.S. will answer any threat from the North with a “massive military response — a response both effective and overwhelming.” Earlier, President Donald Trump threatened to halt all trade with countries doing business with the North, a veiled warning to China, and faulted South Korea for its “talk of appeasement.”

The tough talk from America’s commander in chief and the retired Marine general he picked to oversee the Pentagon came as the Trump administration searched for a response to the escalating crisis. Kim Jong Un’s regime on Sunday claimed “perfect success” in an underground test of what it called a hydrogen bomb. It was the North’s sixth nuclear test since 2006 — the first since Trump took office in January — and involved a device potentially vastly more powerful than a nuclear bomb.

Trump, asked by a reporter during a trip to church services if he would attack the North, said: “We’ll see.” No U.S. military action appeared imminent, and the immediate focus appeared to be on ratcheting up economic penalties, which have had little effect thus far.

    • We don’t have any choice, we either fight or we are conquered, the question is which order will we fight our enemies?

Another questions is how many sides will there be in the coming civil war?

  3. The picture of the Nork H-bomb looks pretty close in size to be able to fit into the envelope of the reentry vehicle of a Minuteman III. Assuming this is the the actual weapon tested, I’d say that the Norks have a quite credible weapon on par with the warhead (107 kt.) used on top of the French M51 SLBM. Since Nork is also developing their indigenous SLBM, they have a coherent program that everyone in the area cannot ignore.

    • Not just that area, according to what I have been reading the missile should have the range to hit at least halfway into the US. The best guess is that we have at best 12 months before North Korea can reach every part of the US and Canada. How long do we wait for the pressure on China to work before we are forced to move?

CNSNews.com) – The number of people working for the federal government has declined by 11,000 in 2017 while the number working for state governments has declined 2,000, according to data published today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But because the number of people employed by local governments has climbed 12,000 so far this year, the overall decline in the number of people employed nationwide by government has only dropped by 1,000 in 2017.

  7. Tajikistan legislators passed a law that effectively bans hijabs, joining a long list of countries that limit or ban Islamic dress.

The new law requires citizens to “stick to traditional and national clothes,” which means either uncovered hair or a scarf tied behind the head, along with long dresses for women, according to Radio Free Europe. The law does not specifically outlaw the hijab, or variations of Islamic veils for women, but enforces a traditional Tajik dress code that a hijab would violate.

    • Note to Eeyore: This video really deserves it’s own front page placement.

Richard, thank you for posting this. I hope that you’ve taken the time to watch, The Great Global Warming Swindle. Despite being produced by the commie-infested BBC, it was one of the first widely distributed videos that challenged garbage “consensus science” that permeates a lot of the MMGW (Man Made Global Warming) hysteria. The BBC video was among the first to identify solar (i.e., sunspot activity) cycles as a signal or driver of climate change.

A few years back, I pointed out to a relatively intelligent Liberal (i.e., +100 IQ) that pro-MMGW researchers had “cherry-picked” their data by taking temperature readings right next to “thermal islands” (e.g., large cities). I noted how neither the consensus science types nor the petroleum industry shills could be trusted in the slightest to provide reliable data.

This person actually had the nerve to tell me that global warming was “so important that lying about it didn’t matter”. Doing my best to remain calm, I replied that, “If there is one group who will deliver a workable solution to climate change, it will be the scientific community.”

I went on to tell this person that, “One thing above all else really pisses off scientists and that is falsifying data.” As in, if we are to hope for truly useful solutions to climate-related issues, we had best make sure that all investigations are conducted in an honest and legitimate manner.

Be sure to read Michael Crichton’s, “State of Fear“. In it he rips the MMGW activists five bright new shiny ones (with footnotes!).

Finally, rectal cavities like Al Gore and the UNIPCC have a hidden agenda that intends to destroy Western Civilization. All of their carbon taxes and “credits” are total scams whose sole aim is to cripple the industrialized West.

Face it, within just a few DAYS, the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, negated YEARS of carbon dioxide emission rollbacks. Just a glance at the total pass that Red China is being given makes a laughingstock of Gore and his Greek chorus of doomsayers..

If Communist China comes all the way uphill into the First World, their increased emissions alone will wipe out all other global reduction efforts. A sterling example of this Liberal hypocrisy is the Sierra Club. When confronted with how illegal immigrants entering the USA caused major increases of GGs (Greenhouse Gases) as they adopted First World lifestyles, the Sierra Club still refused to adopt an anti-immigrant stance. Even as they continue to propagate the MMGW myth!

      Again, thank you.

      • Extra Credit Assignment: Michael Crichton’s superb Caltech lecture, “Aliens Cause Global Warming“.

        An excerpt:

I want to pause here and talk about this notion of consensus, and the rise of what has been called consensus science. I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had.

Let’s be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world.

In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus. There is no such thing as consensus science. If it’s consensus, it isn’t science. If it’s science, it isn’t consensus. Period.

He goes on to show how consensus science (about post-birth puerperal fever) ended up needlessly killing MILLIONS of women. For this and his unusual outstanding dedication to scientific accuracy (except in his shallow treatment of “Prey”), Crichton remains one of my most favorite modern authors.

While not a quantitative measure of his skill, how many other writers have had an Emmy nominated Prime Time television show, Bestseller listed book, and Oscar-winning movie ALL AT THE SAME TIME?
