  1. Turkey Aims to Tighten Muslim Grip on Temple Mount

Turkish foundations and organizations are funneling millions of dollars to eastern Jerusalem and the Temple Mount area to strengthen “Jerusalem’s Muslim heritage and character.” A portion of the funds are provided by the Turkish government, which funds the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA). Turkey’s allies in the city are the head of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, Sheikh Raed Salah, and the former mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Akram Sabri, both bitter enemies of the State of Israel.
Turkish national flags are on display everywhere in the Old City, while the intensive Turkish activity has eroded Jordan’s influence and stature. Within the framework of its peace accord with Israel, Jordan was promised seniority status over Jerusalem’s Islamic holy sites.

    • It’s a deliberate attack against Jordan’s legitimacy as Keeper of the Sites.

I’m far from crazy about the Dwarf-Kinglet, but Jordan has enough trouble right now. Masses of ISIS returnees, infested refugee camps, Iran breathing over the strategic junction to the north.

The Turk has no business that far south. He’s just being provocative to buff his Sultan creds. He sucks and should be dead.

Turkey’s Failed Grand Design for the Middle East

In many ways, the recent crisis between Qatar and its Gulf and other Muslim “friends” marked, among other things, the last nail in the coffin of Turkey’s “grand Middle Eastern design.” Once again, Turkey’s leaders were trapped by their own ideological shallowness into betting on a losing horse.

Very important Turks in dark suits saw the start of the Arab Spring as a golden opportunity to realize their neo-Ottoman ambitions. In Tunisia, their Islamist brothers in arms, the Ennahdha Party, would come to power and annihilate the “secular infidels.” Rachid Ghannouchi, Ennahdha’s chief ideologue, never hid his admiration for Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s stealth Islamization by popular vote.

“This is the moment a terrified teenager punched her sex attacker to free herself after he grabbed her in the street.

Detectives released CCTV footage in a bid to catch the man who assaulted the girl, 13, in Blackburn, Lancashire.

The man can be seen following his victim before catching up with her and talking to her. She crosses the road away from him but he then sprints after her.”

  4. There’s no more certain way to generate opposition to the Saudis than to reveal their pact with the Devil. And to flaunt it?!
Simply unspeakable: this new Crown Prince has forfeited his legitimacy.

Unlikely Allies: Israel and the Saudis

?Israel’s Channel 2 interviewed Saudi policy analyst Abed al-Hamid Hakim last week in Jeddah. After word of the interview got out in Saudi Arabia, there was no serious backlash. Having worked for a number of years in the heart of the government-controlled media in Jeddah, I know that such an interview could never have taken place without the go-ahead from the very highest levels of the Saudi regime.

An equally unprecedented column about the Jewish state duly appeared in the Saudi daily Al Riyadh, which is closely guided and monitored by the government. After praising the peace accords Israel has signed with Egypt and Jordan, Musaid al-Asimi wrote that there was no reason for Arabs to “unjustifiably demonize” Israel. Iran, not Israel, he concluded, must henceforth be considered Saudi Arabia’s regional enemy.

  5. In shift to ‘realpolitik’, Macron drops French calls to oust Assad (france24, Jun 22, 2017)
    http://www.france24.com/en/20170622-macron-opts-realpolitik-drops-french-calls-oust-assad

“President Emmanuel Macron has said France no longer sees Bashar al-Assad’s departure as a pre-condition to resolving the Syrian conflict, ending his predecessor’s intransigent stance on the “Butcher of Damascus”.

France will drop its long-standing call for the Syrian strongman to go, because there is as yet no “legitimate successor” and his removal could lead to further instability, Macron said Wednesday. But if Assad dares use chemical weapons or target humanitarian corridors, the French military will respond immediately – and, if necessary, alone.

That, in a nutshell, is the Syria policy unveiled by France’s newly elected president in a wide-ranging interview with several European newspapers. It marks a change of tack from the stance espoused by his predecessor François Hollande, whom Macron advised before becoming his economy minister…”

  6. Switzerland looks to tighten anti-terror laws (thelocal, Jun 22, 2017)
    https://www.thelocal.ch/20170622/switzerland-looks-to-tighten-anti-terror-laws

“The Swiss federal government has launched a period of consultation on proposed new legislation that would toughen penalties for terrorists and those supporting terror organizations.

In a statement on Thursday, the government said: “The police and justice authorities must be able to act more resolutely against acts likely to increase the risk of a terrorist attack.”

It therefore wants to adapt current laws to combat the recruitment and training of terrorists and ‘jihadi tourism’.

The measures will replace the current temporary ban on terror organizations including Al-Qaida and Islamic State with new, more specific, legislation making it a criminal offence to recruit people for a terror group, receive terrorist training or travel abroad for the purposes of terrorism.

The new measures – which will apply both to terror groups and individuals – will allow Switzerland to ratify the Council of Europe’s 2005 Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism and its 2015 additional protocol, which specifies the same.

The Swiss government wants to raise the maximum jail sentence for people who support or participate in terrorism from five years to ten years – or 20 years for those who run terror groups.

It also wants to make it easier for investigators to share information with other countries’ intelligence services.

The new measures, in consultation until October, will not contravene freedom of expression and religion, assured the government.

Further measures will be proposed later in the year, while the government also wants to establish an action plan for preventing terrorism by recommending ways to detect radicalization at an early stage.

According to intelligence figures up until this May 65 people have left Switzerland to join terror groups abroad, with an additional 23 unconfirmed cases, said news agencies.

Among those 23 are thought to have died and an estimated 14 have returned.”

  7. ‘Great humanity’ needed on migrants – Macron (ansamed, Jun 22, 2017)

“French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday called for “the greatest humanity” in managing migration, government spokesman Christophe Castaner has said.

During the course of his first cabinet meeting Macron said that reform of the national asylum system is a government priority following renewed criticism from French ombudsman Jacques Toubon concerning the situation in Calais. Short-term solutions in the pipeline include reception and orientation centres (CAO).

The French president would also raise the issue at European level during his first summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.”

  8. Gentiloni presses divided EU for action on migrants (ansamed, Jun 22, 2017)

“Premier Paolo Gentiloni reiterated Thursday that the European Union must do more to help Italy cope with the Mediterranean asylum-seeker crisis after a bilateral meeting with European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker. “Greater commitment is needed both in economic terms and in terms of political decisions,” Gentiloni said as he went into a meeting of the Party of European Socialists before the start of the European Summit. “It is necessary to recognise that the Commission and Jean-Claude Juncker are aware of this commitment.

“I hope that this translates into a refinancing of the fund for Africa, which the Commission will promote”. Juncker told Gentiloni that Italy can “continue to count on European solidarity” during the bilateral, an EC spokesperson said. The spokesperson said the two agreed in particular on the “need for the EU and member states to speed up implementation of the agreed-upon actions in the Malta Declaration” as well as “ensure sufficient financing to face the migrant influx from Libya”…”

  9. Haqqani network and Taliban retain freedom of action in Pakistan: US (ansamed, Jun 22, 2017)
    http://www.khaama.com/haqqani-network-and-taliban-retain-freedom-of-action-in-pakistan-us-03000

“The United States Department of Defense says the notorious Haqqani terrorist network and the Taliban group retains freedom of action in Pakistan.

“Pakistan is the most influential external actor affecting Afghan stability and the outcome of both the USFOR-A and the RS missions,” according to a new Pentagon report on Afghanistan.

The report further added that Pakistan views the outcome of Afghanistan to be in its vital national interest and thus remains driven by its India-centric regional policy objectives.

“Afghan oriented militant groups, including the Taliban and Haqqani Network, retain freedom of action inside Pakistani territory and benefit from support from elements of the Pakistani Government,” the report said.

Pentagon also added “Although Pakistani military operations have disrupted some militant sanctuaries, certain extremist groups—such as the Taliban and the Haqqani Network—were able to relocate and continue to operate in and from Pakistan. The United States continues to convey to Pakistan at all levels the importance of taking action against all terrorist and extremist groups.”

Haqqani network was formed in the late 1970s by Jalaluddin Haqqani. The group is allied with al-Qaida and the Afghan Taliban and cooperates with other terrorist organizations in the region.
The US Department of State designated the HQN as a Foreign Terrorist Organization on September 7, 2012.

This comes as the Afghan officials have long been emphasizing that the leadership councils of the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist network are based in the key cities of Pakistan, including Peshawar and Quetta, from where they plan and carry out deadly attacks inside Afghanistan.”
