  1. PACE to discuss degrading Turkey’s status to monitoring (hurriyetdailynews, Apr 21, 2017)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/pace-to-discuss-degrading-turkeys-status-to-monitoring.aspx?pageID=238&nID=112241&NewsCatID=359

“The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is scheduled to meet next week to discuss whether to degrade Turkey’s status and reopen a monitoring process against the country in response to the authoritarian slide in the country.

FM Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu has been lobbying PACE, which he once chaired in 2010, not to relegate Turkey.

The picture is gloomy for Turkey since a report drafted by the co-rapporteurs of the monitoring committee recommended that the assembly decide “to re-open the monitoring procedure in respect of Turkey until its concerns are addressed in a satisfactory manner.”

If the assembly degrades Turkey’s status, it could provide legal ground for the European Union Council to open a debate on the moribund membership talks with Turkey.

On April 24, PACE’s bureau will decide whether the assembly will debate “The functioning of democratic institutions in Turkey” over a report drafted by co-rapporteurs Ingebjørg Godskesen from the European Conservatives Group and Marianne Mikko from the Socialist Group…”

  2. Terrorist module busted in pan-India operation, one nabbed in Thane (gulfnews, Apr 20, 2017)
    http://gulfnews.com/news/asia/india/terrorist-module-busted-in-pan-india-operation-one-nabbed-in-thane-1.2014788

“A terrorist module was busted with the arrest of one and detention of two men from Mumbra in the neighbouring Thane district in a multi-state anti-terrorism operation, an official said here on Thursday.

The operation was carried out in the early hours by a team of Maharashtra Anti-Terorism Squad along with the Uttar Pradesh ATS, the Special Cell of the Delhi Police, and the Crime Investigation Cell of Andhra Pradesh Police.

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested Nazim Shamshad Ahmad, 26, of Bijnor, while the Maharashtra ATS detained two others in Mumbra and was interrogating them.

These three accused men were living in a single-room apartment in a building in Devripada area of the Muslim-dominated Mumbra town since the past few months.

Investigators have seized cash, mobile phones and other things from them, the official said.

“The arrested person, along with other co-accused from different parts of the country, proposed to cause harm to national integrity and social harmony,” an ATS official said in Mumbai.

“An offence in Lucknow vice CR No.8/2017 under various sections is registered and is being investigated by the Uttar Pradesh ATS,” the official added.

According to him, the Uttar Pradesh ATS also arrested Nazim Shaikh and Akram Ansari from other parts of India.

“The Uttar Pradesh ATS conducted joint anti-terror raids in Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in coordination with police of the five states,” Uttar Pradesh ATS chief Asim Arun told IANS earlier on Thursday.

Arun said in Lucknow that the UP ATS had arrested the other two from Jalandhar and Bijnor for conspiring to carry out terror activities.

“The police are interrogating four more people in other parts apart from these two, who were detained in Mumbra. Legal action will be taken on the basis of evidence,” Arun told IANS.

The police had received information that some hyperactive members of a terror group were trying to recruit new members.

The operation also involved police forces of Punjab and Bihar, he said.”

  3. To fund war against terror, big companies set to pay Super Tax for another year (tribune, Apr 20, 2017)
    https://tribune.com.pk/story/1388605/fund-war-terror-big-companies-set-pay-super-tax-another-year/

“The government is planning to extend Super Tax for yet another year, generating Rs30 billion for partially meeting security establishment’s expenditures although more than 90 per cent of the population affected by the Operation Zarb-e-Azb returned to their homes.

The authorities are clearly not in a mood to withdraw the Super Tax from next financial year 2017-18, set to start from July this year, said officials in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

They said that the FBR proposed that in addition to extending the tax into its third year, the government should also increase the rate of super tax to 5 per cent for banking companies.

If the government accepts FBR’s proposals, banks’ effective income tax rate would increase to 40 per cent. The standard income tax rate for the banks is 35 per cent, unlike other companies that pay at the standard rate of 30 per cent. However, companies earning more than Rs500 million annually are paying 33 per cent inclusive of the Super Tax…”

  4. You committed an immense atrocity against Afghans, Karzai tells Trump (khaama, Apr 20, 2017)
    http://www.khaama.com/you-committed-an-immense-atrocity-against-afghans-karzai-tells-trump-02611

“The former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has told Trump that he has commuted an immense atrocity against the Afghan people.

“My message to President Donald Trump today is that he has committed an immense atrocity against the Afghan people,” He said in a Twitter post.

Karzai further added that Trump has committed atrocity againstthe fellow Afghans, against fellow human beings as he he was apparently gesturing towards the use of MOAB against ISIS in East of Afghanistan.

“If the US government sees us as human beings, then they have committed a crime against fellow human beings, but if they treat us as less than human beings, well, of course they can do whatever they want,” he added.

This comes as Karzai earlier said Russia has the right to have relations with the Taliban group as he has adopted a hard stance against the United States, specifically after the MOAB bombing o ISIS hideouts in Achin district of Nangarhar.

Earlier this week, Karzai had vowed to step up efforts in a bid to oust the US military from the country following the massive airstrike in Achin Nangarhar against ISIS terrorists involving the non-nuclear GBU-43 bomb.

He slammed the government for allowing the US forces to carry out the strike and insisted that the move would be a national treason if the government had approved the use of the massive bomb.”

  5. UK – Pair who ‘betrayed all Muslims’ by selling turkey as halal lamb in Leicester restaurants jailed

Two “greedy” businessmen who ran a scam to sell turkey as halal lamb meat have each been jailed for five years.

Meat importer, Mahmudar Rohman, and his friend, Kamal Rahman, were responsible for 160,000 kilos of non-halal turkey being passed off as more expensive boneless halal lamb at wholesalers, butchers, takeaways and restaurants across Leicester, the East Midlands and beyond.

The judge said the trickery had seriously impacted upon victims “financially, culturally and religiously.”………. [ and culinary ...? ] 🙂 🙁

Rohman, 46, and Rahman, 54, were convicted at a recent Leicester Crown Court trial of conspiring to defraud customers, by making false representations about the kind of meat being sold, between 2013 and 2014.

The scam, which netted estimated profits of between £380,000 and £700,000, was discovered in the wake of the horsemeat scandal that led to widespread checks being made and turkey DNA being found, said Kevin Barry, prosecuting, on behalf of Leicester City Council’s trading standards department.

The falsely-labelled turkey was traced back to Rohman’s now defunct Peterborough-based meat suppliers, Dutch Bangla Direct Ltd.

Sentencing, Judge Marcus Tregilgas-Davey said: “You did it to make financial gain, motivated by financial greed and avarice.

“Rohman was the sole director of the company set up in 2012 which imported huge amounts of turkey from Germany, purchased at £2.50 a kilo and sold for between £4.75 and £7.00 a kilo.
“It was set up with legitimate intent but quickly became a vehicle for your fraud.

“Rahman was a well-known and respected businessman who owned, and had interests in, restaurants.

“He helped Rohman to set up the company and put him in contact with potential customers… playing an integral role and just as involved in the company, albeit behind the scenes.”[…]

Mr Barry, the prosecutor, said afterwards: “The sentence properly reflects the broad impact on the community this offending had, not just for individuals but on public confidence in the meat supply chain and particularly the supply of meat purporting to be halal –THAT’S WHAT THE JUDGE FELT REALLY AGGRAVATED IT TO THE POINT WHERE A SUBSTANTIAL SENTENCE WAS CALLED FOR .”

Ron Ruddock, manager of the Leicester City Council’s trading standards team, said his department were first alerted to the scam by their Food Safety Team. He said it was a “complex investigation,” bringing the defendants to justice and the sentences sent out “a strong message.”
Rohman, of Rothbart Way, Peterborough, and Kamal Rahman, of Derby Drive, Peterborough, who denied all allegations and have no previous convictions, were convicted unanimously by the jury of the conspiracy.

Rahman was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice, by trying to persuade a customer to give trading standards false information about where the turkey came from.
Rohman was convicted of six counts of Food Safety Act breaches, two of possessing an articles for use in fraud, forgery and selling food with a false description.

  8. French Philosopher Predicts ‘Immediate Riots’ if Marine Le Pen Wins Presidency (breitbart, Apr 20, 2017)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/04/20/french-philosopher-predicts-immediate-riots-le-pen-wins/

“French leftist-anarchist philosopher Michel Onfray claims if anti-mass migration presidential candidate Marine Le Pen wins the French presidency, there will be immediate riots in the streets.

In an interview conducted by Swiss newspaper Tribune de Geneve published Wednesday, Mr. Onfray warned that due to persistent demonisation of the Front National and Le Pen in French media, there could be a violent public reaction if she wins the presidency.

“As soon as there is an announcement of her victory, some will angrily march in the streets,” he said.

“For years, she has been presented by the mainstream media as fascist, a Nazi, Petainist, Vichy, antidemocratic. If she is not a republican, then prove it, and then forbid her and her party,” he said.

“Or alternatively she is not the devil. But it is very useful for liberals who can thus divide the power, on the right, and on the left, by waving the red rag of fascism before the noses of the voters.”

The philosopher said that Le Pen may have a tougher time than she thinks against the elites in the European Union. “Once elected, she would face a liberal coalition of Brussels technocrats who despise the people and celebrate only freedom of markets.” He likened Le Pen to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras who he described as not being able to deliver on his promises.

“Today Tsipras has returned to the ranks and leads the liberal policy desired by the Europe of Brussels. The same would happen to Marine Le Pen,” he said…”

    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/04/20/marine-le-pen-voters-face-choice-france-rising-france-sinking/

“Front National leader Marine Le Pen has declared that, following years of unrest, riots, and terrorism, “Mass immigration is not an opportunity for France, it’s a tragedy for France.”

“I will protect you. My first measure as president will be to reinstate France’s borders,” promised Ms. Le Pen, triggering enthusiastic applause and chants of, “This is our home!” from a patriotic crowd of 5,000 supporters waving the tricolour flag.

“The choice on Sunday is simple,” she said. “It is a choice between a France that is rising again and a France that is sinking.”

She denounced her opponents as merchants of “savage globalisation”, echoing her comments on major rival Emmanuel Macron in an interview with La Croix:

“I have always said that I’d like to be up against Emmanuel Macron in the second round because then the choice will be clear-cut,” she said. “He is an unashamed globalist who wants to speed up the total opening of borders, free-exchange, and the evisceration of France in favour of private and financial interests.

“I, on the other hand, propose a return to the nation-state, the most effective structure to ensure security, prosperity, and democracy, and to protect our identity.”

Ms. Le Pen urged her supporters to fight for that vision at her Paris rally, encouraging them to go try and persuade friends and relatives to lend her their vote amid rumours of record voter abstentions…”

  10. Study: Over Half of Women Afraid to Use Public Transport as Assaults, Robbery Common (breitbart, Apr 20, 2017)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/04/20/france-60-women-fear-public-transport/

“A new study by the Paris Region Planning and Development Agency (IAU) has found that 56 per cent of women are afraid to use public transport due to concerns over sex attacks and theft.

Le Parisien reports respondents’ insecurity as a “legitimate fear”, noting that 37-per-cent of robberies without violence and 39-per-cent of sexual assaults against women are carried out on public transport and at train stations.

“Amongst female respondents, the fear of being attacked or robbed is so strong it prevents them from using public transport,” the IAU said.

“Women are four times more likely (6.2 per cent) to declare avoiding at least one mode of public transport for fear of aggression or theft than men (1.7 per cent).”

Covering up (with regards to clothing choices) and avoiding travelling alone are common tactics women use to minimise their risk whilst using public transport, according to Le Parisien.

“I identify anything that could be a possible source of trouble, so I can get away from it as much as possible,” said a woman named as Cécile.

Another woman, Clementine, told the French newspaper she makes sure never to be alone when using public transport and will seek out “women, families and couples” to sit near to.

Women who spoke to the publication said they avoid low-cut necklines, short skirts, heels, and even tight jeans so as to avoid harassment or an assault. Wearing a large scarf is another tactic that was mentioned.

Entitled “victimisation and feelings of insecurity in the Ile-de-France”, the study discovered that overall 42-per-cent said they are afraid whilst using public transport, with the figure amongst men standing at 27 per cent.

The most feared form of public transport was revealed to be the RER suburban express train (35 per cent), Paris’ underground Métro (31 per cent), other trains (27 per cent), buses (19 per cent), and trams (14 per cent).

The figures are reported to have come as no surprise to Alma Guirao, creator of a mobile phone application called HandsAway which allows people to alert its users to the presence of “frotteurs” or “rubbers” (persons who obtain sexual gratification by touching or rubbing against the clothed body of another person in a crowd) and other sex attackers.

“Public transport is being deserted by women in particular, who don’t feel safe using it,” said Guirao, whose app has amassed thousands of users since its release in October last year.

Breitbart London reported last month that six out of 10 people in France “no longer feel safe anywhere”, with one in four opting to “strongly agree” with the sentiment, according to a major survey.”

  11. Council of Europe Warns journalists Self-Censoring Due to Police and Online Intimidation (breitbart, Apr 20, 2017)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/04/20/council-europe-warns-journalists-self-censoring-due-police-online-intimidation/

“STRASBOURG (FRANCE) (AFP) – Journalists are increasingly resorting to self-censorship to avoid falling foul of the authorities in the face of physical and psychological intimidation, the Council of Europe said Thursday.

About 40 percent of 940 journalists interviewed in a three-year study said they had experienced interference in their work serious enough for it to impact their private lives, the council said.

More than two-thirds of those questioned said they had suffered threats of violence, a third cited police intimidation and 53 percent said they were subjected to online harassment, the report by Europe’s leading human rights monitor said.

“It should therefore come as no surprise that the survey found high levels of self-censorship among journalists,” the report said.

“Many are compelled to tone down controversial stories, or abandon them altogether,” the report added, after sounding out reporters from five media associations, including Reporters Without Borders, in member states and non-member Belarus.

The council’s secretary general Thorbjoern Jagland called on its 47 member states to fully implement its 2016 recommendation on affording journalists protection and safety in their work “to create a climate of open debate and free speech.”

    – ‘Resolve is laudable’ –

The study said that 87 percent of Turkish respondents reported being victims of targeted surveillance by state authorities, public officials or “other powerful figures” including media owners or advertisers.

The council said many reporters suffered stress, leading to depression or even paranoia. It added that 31 percent toned down a story and that 15 percent abandoned a reporting project altogether, and that 57 percent did not report incidents to police.

But 36 percent said such pressures made them more inclined to resist self-censorship and more determined to pursue their stories.

“Their resolve is laudable,” the council said.

“Freedom of expression is one of the basic conditions for the progress of society. Without safeguards for the safety of journalists there can be no free media.”

While conceding that the study was not necessarily representative of its member states as a whole, the council emphasised that the European Convention on Human Rights makes freedom of expression a “central means by which power is held to account.”

“Different forms of violence against journalists have increased significantly over the last decade,” the report concluded

“Together with impunity for the perpetrators of unwarranted interference on journalists, these are among the most serious challenges facing media freedom today.””
