  1. Turkey referendum: Historic vote on presidential powers under way (BBC, Apr 16, 2017)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-39612562

“Voting is under way in Turkey in a landmark referendum that will determine whether President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be granted sweeping new powers.

Mr Erdogan is seeking to replace Turkey’s parliamentary system with an executive presidency.
Supporters say the move would streamline and modernise the country, but opponents fear it could lead to greater authoritarianism.

A “yes” vote could also see Mr Erdogan remain in office until 2029…”

    • Let me be the first to congratulate the Caliph Erdogan. Let the good times and heads roll.

      • Today on FOX they were talking about how Kim is crazy and will use nukes on the US and our allies if he gets a chance and thus must be taken out. Erdogan is as crazy but is smarter then Kim and thus is more dangerous. He is working and succeeding on becoming the new Caliph of a new Ottoman Empire and has openly stated that all of the lands that the Ottoman Empire once held are going to be reconquered and restored to the glories of being part of his new Caliphate.

Once again the west is faced with dangers from crazy dictators who are openly stating their goals and once again the radical alt left exerts its considerable political influence to prevent any action against the dictators screaming that they are just talking and aren’t serious in their threats. It is too late to prevent WWIII but we can reduce the price in lives if we remove both of the major threats from crazy dictators.

  2. Indonesia’s capital to vote amid religious tensions (asiancorrespondent, Apr 16, 2017)

“JAKARTA voters head to the polls on Wednesday to elect a governor for Indonesia’s capital after a campaign that incited political and religious tensions in the world’s most populous Muslim country.

The race to lead the city of more than 10 million has been fought by two candidates – an ethnic Chinese Christian and a Muslim. It has triggered mass protests and stirred religious and political tensions in the world’s third largest democracy…”

  3. US ‘politicians, bureaucrats & academics’ caught in Turkey’s failed coup attempt probe (RT, Apr 16, 2017)
    https://www.rt.com/usa/384911-turkey-coup-probe-us-bureaucrats/

“Turkey has launched an investigation to examine whether 17 prominent Americans could have links to the FETO movement of an exiled US-based cleric, Fethullah Gulen, which Ankara blames for last summer’s failed coup attempt.

The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched the probe into 17 individuals including US politicians, bureaucrats, and academics after a number of Turkish attorneys filed a criminal complaint against these persons, local media report.

Former CIA Director John O. Brennan, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, US attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara, and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) President David Cohen are among the suspects, Anadolu reports.

Other American residents caught in the probe include Henri Barkey, Director of the Middle East Program at Wilson Center former CIA figure Graham E. Fuller, and President of the Turkic American Alliance (TAA) Faruk Taban.

Schumer, for instance, is being suspected of receiving millions of dollars from Gulen’s movement and representing his organizational interests in the US.

Fuller, a former vice chairman of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA, allegedly was a sponsor for Gulen when he applied for a US residence permit.

The individuals are being accused of conspiracy to overthrow the Turkish government and are suspected to have links with FETO. Alleged evidence of their involvement with the Gulen movement has been submitted to the prosecutors, Turkish media report.

Gulen leads the popular Islamic transnational religious and social movement called Hizmet, believed to be funding numerous businesses, think tanks, private schools, and publishing houses around the world. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the prominent cleric and his group of masterminding the failed coup in Turkey on July 15, 2015…”

If you don’t find this report chilling you ought to, Erdogan is seeking to impose his will and perverted legal system on the US, this is his response to both bombing attacks. He is telling President Trump he wasn’t impressed and thinks he won’t be touched for his actions.

  4. This little video shows a typical representative of Jew-Hatred coming from moronic, uneducated , leftist whores-for-Islam who probably dream of getting laid by a Jihadi, violently if possible, their only “history education” coming from reading “50 Shades of Gray” .

    • Buck, thank you for contributing this excellent video. Muslim immigration colonization is definitely the biggest and best-hidden “Easter egg” that the West is ever going to find.

The only question being, “When will we find out?” In time, or too late?

This particular clock is ticking down faster than a cheap Chinese watch. It also makes the so-called “Doomsday Clock”, look about as urgent as the need for an extra proctology exam.

      Happy Easter, everybody!

  6. Tensions escalate as defiant North Korea ‘makes unsuccessful missile launch’ day after massive show of strength

North Korea made an unsuccessful attempt to launch a missile the day after displaying a massive show of strength, South Korean and US military sources have said.

Details of the attempted launch are scant, but it will be seen as a gesture of defiance by Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader.

U.S. Pacific Command detected and tracked what it assessed to be a North Korean ballistic missile launch at 11:21 a.m. Hawaii time (2121 GMT) on Saturday, said U.S. Navy Commander Dave Benham, a spokesman for Pacific Command.

“The missile blew up almost immediately. The type of missile is still being assessed,” he said.

It was launched from a base at Sinpo, a port city on the North Korean east coast.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/15/missile-trump-afraid-kim-jong-un-waves-armoury-death-inpyongyang/

    • I would hate to be the head of North Korea’s missile research program right about now.

At this point, Fat Boy must being going through rocket scientists like toilet paper.

I still have to wonder if US laser or particle-beam weapons aren’t being used to nail these overstuffed bottle rockets during their boost phase. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

The only question is, “How many of Fat Boy’s meltdowns will the design-build teams be able to withstand before the herd gets too thinned out to meet another launch window?”

You can bet the farm that someone and their family went to the wall for this latest fiasco pour encouragé les autres.

      • Kim has backed himself into a corner and can’t back down, this is the price the world is going to have to pay for the US electing Obama.

        • Kim has backed himself into a corner and can’t back down…

Which is why I’ve made such a fuss about Fat Boy thinning his herds of rocket scientists. Just like Saddam lowering his losing Olympic soccer team players feet-first into industrial shredders, Kim’s tradition of “Leadership by Intimidation” cannot, will not, does not, and has not ever succeeded throughout human history. There is only “Leadership by Example”. Everything else is meaningless.

None of which had discouraged shortsighted tyrants like Hitler, Ahmadinejad, or Fat Boy from using this repeatedly discredited strategy.

… this is the price the world is going to have to pay for the US electing Obama.

Speaking of “shortsighted tyrants”, as a (thank goodness, temporary) yet two-term leader of the Free World, 0bama still managed to cause more destruction than most people are capable of imagining or engineering in their entire lifetimes.

Few other illustrations are available to the public that adequately portray what sort of damage one carefully-placed and easily manipulated—or cheerfully cooperative—puppet marionette ventriloquist’s dummy chump can perpetrate upon an otherwise ostensibly free people.

          • His supporters are still out here cheerfully causing more damage and lying about history to try and damage the US. Their control of the Propaganda Media and their willingness to put their political agenda ahead of the survival of freedom is going to cost us dearly in the coming years.

  7. Turks vote in historic referendum on expanding Erdogan’s power

ANKARA/ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Turks cast their votes in a referendum on Sunday that would give sweeping new powers to President Tayyip Erdogan and herald the most radical change to the country’s political system in its modern history.

Opinion polls have shown a narrow lead for a “Yes” vote, which would replace Turkey’s parliamentary democracy with an all-powerful presidency and may see Erdogan in office until at least 2029.

The outcome will also shape Turkey’s strained relations with the European Union. The NATO member state has curbed the flow of migrants – mainly refugees from wars in Syria and Iraq – into the bloc but Erdogan says he may review the deal after the vote.

A crowd chanted “Recep Tayyip Erdogan” and applauded as the president shook hands and greeted people after voting in a school near his home in Istanbul. His staff handed out toys for children in the crowd.

  8. More Dem corruption: Maxine Waters caught paying hundreds of thousands dollars to daughter
By Onan Coca April 15, 2017

Near the end of March we reported that veteran Democratic Rep. Alcee Hastings ?
    18%
had become embroiled in a corruption scandal that saw him paying his girlfriend $2.5 million over the last twenty years.

Now, news is breaking that another popular Democrat, Rep. Maxine Waters ?
    28%
(D-Calif.), has been discovered in a similarly troubling ethical conundrum.

The Washington Free Beacon is reporting that Karen Waters has been paid over $600,000 by her mother since 2006:

daughter of Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.) was paid nearly $70,000 by her mother’s campaign during the 2016 election cycle.

Karen Waters has been on the payroll of her mother’s campaign committee, Citizens for Waters, since 2006. She has pulled in more than $600,000 for her services since that time…

Karen pulled in $65,287 overseeing the slate mailer operation in 2016, making her the third-largest recipient of Waters campaign funds that cycle. Karen, together with her firm Progressive Connections, has received over $600,000 in payments from the Waters campaign since 2006.

This isn’t the first time that Waters has gotten herself into ethical hot water. In fact, it’s happened several different times over the nearly three decades she’s been in Congress.

In 2010, Waters was brought up on charges by her colleagues in the House, even after Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) warned her against getting involved in advocating for a bank in which she had financial interests.

  9. Liberal media want Trump to be as transparent as Obama with WH visitors logs? He already is
By Howard Portnoy April 15, 2017

The liberal media are livid following the announcement on Friday that the Trump White House will no longer — in the words of CNN — “release logs of White House visitors.” In so doing, the least reliable name in cable news goes on, the current administration is “breaking with a precedent set by the Obama administration.”

Other outlets chimed in, among them The Washington Post, which grumbled:

The Trump administration announced Friday that it will not follow former president Barack Obama’s policy of voluntarily disclosing the names of most visitors to the White House complex, citing “grave national security risks and privacy concerns.”

You can find more of the same in The New York Times, Mother Jones, NPR, and even on Twitter. Here’s Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer:

Another glaring ex of Pres Trump saying one thing & doing another. Why aren’t White House visitor logs being made public? What’s he hiding?

I believe Schumer has his presidents confused. It was not Donald Trump who promised to oversee the transparent administration in the history of the planet. It was his predecessor. And even then, Barack Obama was not true to his word.

  10. A Month of Islam and Multiculturalism in Britain: March 2017

    by Soeren Kern
    April 16, 2017 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/10215/islam-multiculturalism-britain-march

March 1. A new Channel 4 documentary series called “Extremely British Muslims” showed the inner workings of a sharia court inside Birmingham’s Central Mosque. In the first episode, viewers witnessed the case of mother-of-four Fatima, 33, as she sought permission to divorce her drug dealer husband she says has abused her throughout their 14-year marriage. According to sharia law, Muslim women must plead their divorce cases in court, while Muslim men need only to say the words “I divorce you” three times to obtain a divorce. Birmingham Central Mosque said it allowed the sharia proceedings to be filmed in an effort to “break down misconceptions about Islam.” Some 100 sharia courts in Britain are now dispensing Islamic justice outside the remit of the British legal system.

March 2. English actor Riz Ahmed warned that the lack of Muslim faces on British television was alienating young people, driving them towards extremism and into the arms of the Islamic State. Delivering Channel 4’s annual diversity lecture in Parliament, Ahmed said that television had a pivotal role to play in ensuring that Muslims felt heard, and valued, in British society:

“If we fail to represent, we are in danger of losing people to extremism. In the mind of the ISIS recruit, he’s the next James Bond right? Have you seen some of those ISIS propaganda videos, they are cut like action movies. Where is the counter narrative? Where are we telling these kids they can be heroes in our stories — that they are valued? If we don’t step up and tell a representative story we are going to start losing British teenagers to the story that the next chapter in their lives is written with ISIS in Syria.”

March 3. The Amateur Swimming Association changed its swimsuit regulations to allow Muslim women to wear full body outfits, after a request from the Muslim Women’s Sport Foundation. The rule was changed to encourage more Muslim women to take part in the sport. Rimla Akhtar, from the Muslim Women’s Sport Foundation, said:

  11. “Spit on the Cross or Die”
Muslim Persecution of Christians, January 2017

    by Raymond Ibrahim
    April 16, 2017 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/10207/muslim-persecution-of-christians-january

Tragic stories of Christian experiences under the Islamic State continued to emerge throughout the month of January. A Christian doctor who forfeited the chance to escape his Syrian village after ISIS had captured it because he wanted to stay and help the sick and needy, both Christian and Muslim, was kidnapped by the Muslim terrorists and ordered to renounce Christ for Muhammad. When he refused, they publicly slaughtered him. Similarly, after ISIS ordered another Christian youth in Syria to embrace Islam, he too refused and was slaughtered for it. His mother — who was prevented from burying her martyred son’s body — recalled that when ISIS first invaded their village, he reminded her of Jesus’ assertion in the New Testament: “If you deny me before men I will deny you before the Father.”

After members of ISIS raided the home of Zarefa, an elderly Christian woman in Iraq, they discovered crucifixes and Christian icons. “They forced me to spit on the Cross,” she recalled.

“I told them that it was not appropriate, that it was a sin. He said that I must spit. ‘Don’t you see that I have a gun?’ he asked me. I said to myself, ‘Oh, the Cross! I am weak, I will spit on you. But Lord, I ask you to take revenge for me. I cannot escape from this.'”

According to the report, “The shame is still visible on Zarefa’s face when she recounts the memory; her town, Qaraqosh, is liberated now, but she is still recovering from the traumatic two years that are only just behind her.”

  14. Terror fears mount for Pope Francis visit as ISIS look to ‘purify’ Egypt of Christians (express, Apr 16, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/792522/Egyptian-Pope-Francis-Palm-Sunday-terror

“THERE are growing concerns about whether the Egyptian Government can keep Pope Francis safe from terror as his papal visit nears.

Pope Francis’ visit to Egypt draws closer but concerns continue to mount about the safety of the religious leader following last week’s Palm Sunday attacks.

Last weekend, bombers targeted Coptic Christians on Palm Sunday, killing 44 people in twin attacks on churches in two different cities.

The explosions prompted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi to declare a three-month state of emergency and promise to protect the religious minority…”

    • Pope Francis’ visit to Egypt draws closer but concerns continue to mount about the safety of the religious leader following last week’s Palm Sunday attacks.

Does anyone seriously think that Poke Francis hasn’t created his own aura of vulnerability by continually portraying the Vatican as Islam’s crimson-draped butt boy? Is the possibility of his assassination driven even a slight degree more by his incessant @ss-ki$$ing of all things Islamic?

Regardless of whether you associate Catholicism and Christianity, the Vatican’s flagrant unwillingness to defend global Christian populations, (e.g., Egyptian Copts) translates into Rome’s utter damnation. I sincerely invite all arguments to the contrary.

“TURKISH President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could be handed a huge new range of powers which critics say will turn Turkey into a “one man regime”.

Supporters of the ruling AK Party are already celebrating as the last of the votes are counted in a controversial referendum.

Turkish PM Binali Yildirim has declared victory for president Recep Tayyip Erdogan although the country’s election commission has yet to announce official results.

On Sunday, Turks took to the polls to vote on constitutional reforms – with a turnout of around 86 per cent.

A “Yes” vote would replace Turkey’s parliamentary democracy with an all-powerful presidency and may see Erdogan in office until at least 2029.

The outcome will also shape Turkey’s strained relations with the European Union.

With 98 per cent of the votes counted it seems Erdogan has been given permission to shape parliament to his wishes.

  16. A Saudi woman’s plea for help exposes risks runaways face (abcnews, Apr 16, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/saudi-womans-plea-exposes-risks-runaways-face-46825895

“A young Saudi woman’s plea for help after she was stopped in an airport in the Philippines en route to Australia where she planned to seek asylum has triggered a firestorm on social media and drawn attention to the plight of female runaways.

For runaway Saudi women, fleeing can be a matter of life and death, and they are almost always doing so to escape male relatives.

Under Saudi Arabia’s conservative interpretation of Islamic law, a male guardianship system bars women from traveling abroad, obtaining a passport, marrying or even leaving prison without the consent of a male relative. Most Muslim-majority countries do not have similarly restrictive guardianship laws.

The mystery around what triggered Dina Ali Lasloom’s cry for help has only added to concerns for her safety.

In a video that appears to be shot with a mobile phone, the 24-year-old says her passport was taken from her at Manila’s international airport in the Philippines on Monday on her way to Australia.

She alleges that Philippine airport officials confiscated her passport at the request of Saudi diplomats until her relatives could arrive to take her to Saudi Arabia.

“If my family come, they will kill me. If I go back to Saudi Arabia, I will be dead. Please help me,” she pleads in the video. Lasloom says she is recording the video at the airport so the public “know that I’m real and here.”…”

    • This is nine-ways-to-sick.

The Philippine Republic is Asia’s “canary in the coal mine”. As the only Christian nation in East Asia, if it succumbs to Islam, then many other Southeast Asian countries can look forward to the same fate. That Manila could disregard this plea for appropriate sanctuary by an at-risk Saudi woman will signal two very important things:

Any financial back-flow of remittances from Philippine Overseas Guest Workers employed in Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries somehow eclipses both expatriate loyalties and the Theocratic establishment of Manila’s governmental structure. This is no small thing as the role of Catholic doctrine supposedly plays a major part in that nation’s legal system.

Secondly, it makes a mockery of any pushback against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front which continues to murder Filipinos and tourists alike on a regular basis.

Either the Philippines opposes ALL Islamic domination or it shows its belly to Muslim tyranny.

Some Liberal Democrats in Parliament sent a letter to Home Secretary Amber Rudd on Sunday, saying Asma Assad should not be able to represent her husband and retain British nationality.

Lawmaker Tom Brake said: “The first lady of Syria has acted not as a private citizen but as a spokesperson for the Syrian presidency.”

He said Asma Assad should either stop defending Syria’s “barbaric acts” or lose her citizenship.

  20. UK primary school take pupils on day out to meet ‘extremist’ Islamic preacher (RT, Apr 16, 2017)
    https://www.rt.com/uk/384958-school-children-extremist-islam/

“Children from a London primary school spent a two-day school trip with an imam described by a British High Court as supportive of “extremist Islamic positions.”

Aged between six to eight, the children from Kilmorie Primary School met with Shakeel Begg to discuss Islam at the Lewisham Islamic Centre on March 21 and 22.

Begg gained notoriety as the imam of the mosque attended by the killers of British army soldier Lee Rigby in 2013.

Details and images of the visit were posted to the center’s website, reported the Telegraph, but have since been removed.

The center’s web page describes Begg as being impressed with the keenness of the children to test his knowledge of Islam and their understanding of “the many shared beliefs and values of different faith communities.”

The imam is described as getting a tear in his eye when the children express their love for Muhammad and Ali during a discussion “about the prophet of Islam, Muhammad (PBUH), and a person similarly named.”

Tom Wilson from the Henry Jackson Society, who is a vocal critic of Begg, condemned the visit as unacceptable, saying, that schools are obligated not to expose their pupils to “anyone associated with extremism.”

“Schools are under a statutory duty that quite explicitly prohibits exposing pupils to extremists,” said Wilson.

Kilmorie school’s Sally Kelly defended the visit, saying it promoted “the British values of tolerance of people of different faiths and beliefs and the learning is part of the National Curriculum.”

Begg lost a libel action to BBC last year after a judge ruled he had promoted violence. The action arose from a 2013 politics show which alleged that Begg had claimed jihad was the greatest of deeds.

Justice Haddon-Cave said in the ruling against Begg that the Imam “clearly promotes and encourages violence in support of Islam and espouses a series of extremist Islamic positions.”

Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, who killed British Army soldier Lee Rigby in 2013, both attended the Lewisham Islamic Centre where Begg was Imam at the time…”

  21. Orban Easter Speech: ‘Battlefield Europe… Stop Mass Migration. The Future of Europe Is at Stake’ (breitbart, Apr 16, 2017)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/04/16/battlefield-europe-stop-mass-migration-future-europe-viktor-orban/

“Calling international politics a “battlefield”, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told newspaper Magyar Id?k that Hungary’s sovereignty is under constant attack from foreign interests and the powerful left wing activist George Soros. Adding that mass migration threatens the future of Europe, he urged for the preservation of Christian civilisation.

“Today we live in a time when international politics is a battlefield,” Prime Minister Orbán said on Easter Sunday. “The independence and freedom of European nations are at stake. And at the centre of the battlefield is migration.”

“This is what our future stands or falls on,” he said, “the fate of Europe. The question is whether the character of European nations will be determined by the same spirit, civilisation, culture and mentality as in our parents’ and grandparents’ time, or by something completely different.”

Discussing how his government has come under criticism following the implementation of stricter border controls and asylum policies in the ongoing migrant crisis, Mr. Orbán observed that “those calling themselves liberal and left-wing – who are supported with the money, power and networks of international forces, with George Soros at the forefront – claim that taking action against migration is wrong, impractical and immoral”.

Contrasting that with the wishes of the Hungarian people, Orbán said: “…we want to preserve the foundations of Europe. We do not want parallel societies, we do not want population exchanges, and we do not want to replace Christian civilisation with a different kind. Therefore we are building fences, defending ourselves, and not allowing migrants to flood us.”…”

    • “The Czech Republic is not prepared to accept any more than the 12 migrants it has already taken under the quota scheme set up by the European Union…

That’s got to be some sort of typo!

As in, 12 dozen, 12 hundred, 12 thousand, or 12 hundred thousand. Otherwise, how is anyone supposed to believe that an EU country is obliged to accept only 12 million “refugees” each year?!?

      Equiring minds want to know!!!

  22. EXCLUSIVE – Gay Porn Kingpin: Protect America From Muslim ‘Barbarians’

    From Breitbart:

    ***************************

“During the radio interview, Lucas was asked to whom he was referring when he used the term “barbarians.”

    He replied:

I am referring to the Muslim world. To the world of Islam. We will not be able to change them but we have to protect our world and our way of life as vigorously as they protect their way of life. And yes immigration is a problem. Yes, on the left this is a very unpopular opinion. If we are taking (refugees and immigrants) we should not take from the pool of people that is so hostile to us. You know, people, they’re saying on the left, well, bring them here and they will enjoy our freedom and they will embrace gays. No, stay there, learn how to love gays and then come here.

But with all seriousness, Muslim immigration is a problem. They come here, they lobby, they bring hate. And that is not the right pool of people we should be taking from. That is very unfortunate but it would be terrible for refugees and it would be terrible for us because there will be a lot of hate. People don’t want really refugees from Muslim countries because it is such a different culture that will collide with our culture. They will radicalize much faster here and that is why I am very much against this immigration.”

    **************************

“In a follow up text message after the interview, Lucas further clarified that he sees four kinds of Islamic societies:

The first one – Oil rich Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia that can afford to execute homosexuals and all other offenders openly without hiding it. The West lets them get away with it because of our governments’ business dealings

Second – Countries like Egypt that have no capital punishment for homosexuality, but have public trials that throw gays in jail. Those trials are covered in the West and often put authorities in those countries on the defensive following public outrage and then a crackdown on gays temporally stops.

Third are territories that are run by terrorist groups like ISIS that proudly execute homosexuals and film beheadings and stonings.

And then we have places like Chechnya that are not governed by laws and where gays are being persecuted and killed by police. But when confronted about it they deny the existence of homosexuals in their society or any problem.”

  23. Hundreds march against far-right French presidential hopeful Le Pen

PARIS – Hundreds of demonstrators in France marched on Sunday to protest far-right National Front leader and presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, saying that basic freedoms would disappear if she were elected.

Some protesters threw firebombs at police during the march from suburban Aubervilliers to a Paris neighborhood where Le Pen is scheduled to hold a rally on Monday. Officers responded with tear gas during the small skirmishes.

Fernanda Marrucchelli said Le Pen’s anti-immigration party “is fighting our essential freedoms, our rights, no matter if we are French or immigrant.”

A banner at the front of the march read “Paris-Suburbs Against the National Front.” Marchers handed out tracts denouncing xenophobia and racism that they allege Le Pen and her anti-immigration party represent.

Anti-racism activist Omar Slauti said the fight against Le Pen should be in the streets, not the ballot box, denouncing the “extreme-right populism” that has spread around Europe.

Le Pen, who wants to pull France out of the European Union, is one of the top contenders in France’s first-round presidential vote on April 23. A presidential runoff is being held May 7 between the top two-vote-getters.

The far-right leader has worked to erase the image of racism and anti-Semitism that for years defined her party.

She wants to restore a French identity that she claims has been erased by “massive immigration,” mainly from former French colonies in Muslim North Africa.

  24. Over one hundred cars damaged after double garage fire in Malmö (thelocal, Apr 16, 2017)
    https://www.thelocal.se/20170416/more-than-a-hundred-cars-damaged-in-malm-garage-fire

“More than a hundred cars have been destroyed or damaged after two garages in Malmö were set ablaze on consecutive nights.

At least five cars were damaged in a fire on Easter Saturday night, after more than a hundred cars had been damaged by flames and soot in a separate garage blaze the night before.

Both fires took place on the same road in the Rosengård district of the southern city.

Emergency services were called just before 10pm on Easter Saturday and had the fire under control by 10:10, local rescue services said in a statement. Several fire stations took part in the operation, while police cordoned off part of the road.

In the fire on Friday night, 35 cars were completely destroyed in the flames, with a further 120 damaged by soot, preliminary prosecutor Tobias Halldén told the regional Sydsvenskan newspaper.

The incident is being treated as arson, but police have no evidence yet as to who might be responsible.”

  25. Austria’s Islamic kindergartens help create ‘parallel societies’: study (thelocal, Apr 16, 2017)
    https://www.thelocal.at/20170416/study-suggests-viennas-islamic-kindergartens-create-parallel-societies

“A debate is raging in Austria after a study suggested that Islamic kindergartens in Vienna were helping to create “parallel societies” or even produce the dangerous homegrown radicals of the future.

According to its author, Ednan Aslan, a Turkish-born Austrian professor at Vienna University, some 10,000 children aged two to six attend around 150 Muslim preschools, teaching the Koran much like Christian ones do with Bible studies.

At least a quarter are backed by groups propagating arch conservative strains of Islam like Salafism, or organizations that see religion not just as a private matter but integral to politics and society, Aslan believes.

“Parents are sending their kids to establishments that ensure they are in a Muslim setting and learn a few suras (chapters from the Koran),” Aslan, a respected researcher into Islamic education, told AFP.

“But they are unaware that they are shutting them off from a multicultural society,” he said.

The study, published last year, has been jumped on by critics of immigration – not least the far-right Freedom Party – in the wake of attacks such as Paris and Brussels perpetrated by Muslims who grew up in Europe.

    Undercover

But many reject Aslan’s findings, questioning its methodology.

The magazine Biber, which writes for and about minorities, sent a veiled Muslim reporter undercover posing as a mother looking for a place for her son at 14 Muslim kindergartens.

She found no evidence to back up Aslan’s suggestions that they were churning out “little Salafists” or that things like the children singing – frowned upon by ultra-strict Muslims – were banned.

But around a third were according to the magazine “problematic”, “cutting off or isolating children” from mainstream society. It also voiced concerns about the “openness” of some staff and the level of German spoken.

Vienna City Hall has since sought to calm the situation by commissioning an in-depth study involving a six-strong research team which will be published later this year.

But the first problem is establishing how many Islamic kindergartens there are. Vienna has 842 registered kindergartens, 100 of them Catholic-run and 13 Protestant, but the number of Muslim ones is not known.

Part of the reason is that there has been an explosion in the number that are privately run, stretching the ability of the authorities to keep tabs and allowing some to operate under the radar.

    City of immigrants

Vienna is home to 1.8 million people, half of whom have a parent born abroad or who were born abroad themselves. Ever since it was the capital of a vast empire, it has been a magnet for outsiders, not all of them always welcome.

“But what is new in recent years has been the religious aspect of the debate about integration,” said Thomas Schmidinger, political scientist and Islam specialist at Vienna University.

Austria, a nation of 8.7 million people, has received more than 130,000 asylum applications since 2015 following the onset of the European Union’s biggest migration crisis since World War II.

The Freedom Party is riding high in the polls. Surveys suggest that public attitudes to Muslims have hardened. Attacks on migrant shelters soared last year.

The ruling centrist coalition has moved to the right with plans to ban full-face veils in public and oblige migrants to sign an “integration contract”.

Organizations representing Austria’s 700,000-strong Muslim population say that in this context, Aslan’s flawed report has only fanned the flames.

“This study feeds populism and forces Muslims to justify themselves constantly,” said Murat Gurol from newly created pressure group the Muslim Civil Society Network.

The 45-year-old IT worker said he sent his own son to a Muslim kindergarten in order to learn “the values of solidarity, humanity and responsibility”.

As a child he went to a Christian preschool, and “I don’t see why that should be allowed for one religion and not for another”, he told AFP.”
