“Kidnappers are demanding a ransom of 60 million naira (about $200,000) for a German archaeologist and his associate abducted this week from a northern Nigerian village, a worker at the excavation site said.

The worker said he heard a man make the demand in a telephone call Thursday to the site’s supervisor. The caller warned not to involve police or security forces, said the worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to reporters.

Police special forces and a special investigative team for kidnappings already were searching around Jenjela village in Kaduna state, where gunmen on Wednesday abducted professor Peter Breunig and his associate Johannes Behringer and walked with them into the bush…”

“Ankara has received intelligence that U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen might be considering leaving the United State for Canada after purchasing land in the country, Justice Minister Bekir Bozda? has said, noting that the prolongation of Gülen’s extradition would harm relations between Washington and Ankara.

“There is strong intelligence pointing to the purchase of land in different countries, especially in Canada. We have intelligence that those activities accelerated after [Donald] Trump was elected,” Bozda? said in a televised interview with CNN Türk’s Feb. 23.

“We also conveyed that information to the U.S. Department of Justice,” Bozda? said.

  3. Hate criminals should be registered like sex offenders & refused jobs, inquiry told (RT, Feb 24, 2017)
    https://www.rt.com/uk/378512-hate-crime-register-job/

“People guilty of hate crimes should be put on an official register and banned from certain jobs, according to a Durham University academic.

The Commons Home Affairs Committee is currently holding an inquiry into hate crime and its consequences.

In written evidence submitted to the inquiry, Thom Brooks, professor of law and government, says a “Hate Crime Offenders Register” would list those guilty of racist abuse or assault. Such an approach would send a “clear signal” about the severity of such offences, he said.

“Given increasing concern about hate crimes, there may be scope for parliament to consider establishing a Hate Crime Offenders Register along the lines of the Sex Offenders Register – and to similar effect.

“Anyone on a Hate Crime Offenders Register could be restricted from working with children and/or working in certain professions. This seems sensible, mirrors current policies in place and would help send a clearer signal of how serious these offences are,” he added.

Hate crimes are defined as any offence that is racially or religiously aggravated. Crimes motivated by a person’s disability, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation are also included…”

“Pakistan International Airlines is investigating how seven extra passengers were allowed to stand in the aisles on a flight to Saudi Arabia, a spokesman told the BBC.

The passengers were allowed on the 20 January flight to Medina despite every seat being filled, the airline said.

Details of the flight have only emerged now because of extensive investigations by Dawn newspaper.

Staff had issued additional handwritten boarding passes, the paper reported.

Such an over-crowded flight would have caused problems in an emergency evacuation, aviation experts said, and passengers would not have had access to oxygen if it was suddenly required…”

  5. Romania Questioning 28 Iraqi Migrants Discovered Near Border

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romanian border police say they are questioning 28 Iraqi citizens they found in southwestern Romania in the vicinity of the border with Serbia.

A statement said Romanian police spotted the group during a sweep on Thursday afternoon to target illegal migrants.

Border police took the group that was just inside Romania, and consisted of 16 men, 7 women and five minors including a 1-year-old baby, to a police station in the town of Oravita.

The police statement Friday said the group was trying to reach Western Europe and was travelling without documents.

The wave of migration from the Middle East, Africa and Asia to Western Europe has largely bypassed Romania.

  6. Denmark: Dozens commemorate imaginary terror attack in ‘Pray for Sweden’ vigil

Dozens of people showed up at a vigil outside the Swedish embassy in Copenhagen on Friday to pay their respects to the victims of the terrorist attack that never happened in neighbouring Sweden.

The mock vigil was stocked with flags, candles, fake flowers, teddy bears and signs with slogans such as “Believing Trump is Stockholm Syndrome” and “Today we all drink”.

The vigil came as a reaction to remarks made by US President Donald Trump earlier this week, when he referenced an imaginary attack during a rally in Florida.

“You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden – Sweden. Who would believe this? Sweden.” Trump had said.

SOT, demonstrators (Danish): “We have come to show our support for our Swedish neighbors. Hurray Sweden. Je Suis meatballs.”

SOT, demonstrator (Danish): “We made fake news from fake news to real news, as it is today, and that is an interesting coupling. I also think that it is important to stay updated. In fact, I think you are obliged to keep yourself updated on what’s happening in society, in a democratic society, otherwise it does not work.”

During his meeting with Secretary General of the Muslim World League Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim al-Issa along with 50 other officials from the League, the Mufti confirmed the importance of carrying out more dialogue to demonstrate the pros of Islam, praising the work done currently by al-Issa.
