  2. China suspends North Korean coal imports, striking at regime’s financial lifeline

    02-18-2017

BEIJING — China will suspend all imports of coal from North Korea until the end of the year, the Commerce Ministry announced Saturday, in a surprise move that would cut off a major financial lifeline for Pyongyang and significantly enhance the effectiveness of U.N. sanctions.

Coal is North Korea’s largest export item, and also China’s greatest point of leverage over the regime.

China said the move was designed to implement November’s United Nations Security Council resolution that tightened sanctions against the regime in the wake of its last nuclear test.
But experts said the move also reflected Beijing’s deep frustration with North Korea over its recent missile test and the assassination of Kim Jong Un’s half brother in Malaysia.

Kim Jong Nam had been hosted and protected by China for many years, and his murder, if proved to be conducted on Pyongyang’s orders, would be seen as a direct affront to Beijing, experts said.

China has also come under significant international pressure to do more to rein in North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, while Chinese President Xi Jinping is believed to have become increasingly irritated by Kim Jong Un’s behavior.

North Korea is China’s fourth-biggest supplier of coal. Although China announced in April that it would ban North Korean coal imports to comply with U.N. sanctions, it made exceptions for deliveries intended for the “people’s well-being” and not connected to North Korea’s missile programs.

In practice, that exception was the cover for coal to continue to flow across the border in huge quantities, with imports of non-lignite coal up 14.5 percent last year to 22.5 million metric tons (24.8 million U.S. tons).

But in a sign that Beijing’s patience was running out, it rejected a coal shipment from North Korea worth about $1 million Monday, the day after the test of an intermediate-range ballistic missile, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported.

China has long been reluctant to do anything that might threaten the stability of the North Korean regime — mainly because it fears that the reunification of the Korean Peninsula could bring South Korea, an American ally that hosts U.S. troops, right up to its border. Given that a total ban on coal imports could be destabilizing, it remains to be seen how firmly the pledge will be carried out.

But Pyongyang’s unwillingness to consider China’s interests has badly damaged — or even destroyed — trust between the long-standing allies.

“China still places a premium on stability, but Xi Jinping is growing more and more frustrated with Kim Jong Un,” said Paul Haenle, director of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center in Beijing, adding that the missile test and the assassination were seen as “serious offenses.”

“Beijing took the assassination as a direct affront to China. Xi is less willing to tolerate these provocations,” he said. “China is putting a squeeze on its economic lifeline to send a message to Pyongyang.”

Wang Weimin, a professor at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University in Shanghai, said sympathy for North Korea’s national security concerns had disappeared in Beijing, and “blood ties” between the countries had been broken as it became clear that the regime could not be tamed.

“If we choose an ally that can’t be tamed, we might become the biggest loser,” he said. “That’s why we are more and more strict with North Korea. Now self-interest is central. We won’t pay attention to North Korea’s interests anymore.”

President Trump has also called on China to put more pressure on North Korea to stop its nuclear weapons program, and the subject may have come up during a telephone conversation he had with Xi earlier this month.

China has “total control over North Korea,” Trump said in an interview on “Fox & Friends” in early January. “And China should solve that problem. And if they don’t solve the problem, we should make trade very difficult for China.”

The U.N. Security Council condemned North Korea’s latest missile test Monday and urged members to “redouble efforts” to enforce sanctions. That appeal came after an emergency meeting in New York called by the United States, Japan and South Korea.

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-usa-immigration-asylum-idUKKBN15Y04F

“The Department of Homeland Security has prepared new guidance for immigration agents aimed at speeding up deportations by denying asylum claims earlier in the process.

The new guidelines, contained in a draft memo dated February 17 but not yet sent to field offices, directs agents to only pass applicants who have a good chance of ultimately getting asylum, but does not give specific criteria for establishing credible fear of persecution if sent home.

The guidance instructs asylum officers to “elicit all relevant information” in determining whether an applicant has “credible fear” of persecution if returned home, the first obstacle faced by migrants on the U.S.-Mexico border requesting asylum. (Graphic: tmsnrt.rs/2m4aPAs)

Three sources familiar with the drafting of the guidance said the goal of the new instructions is to raise the bar on initial screening…”

  6. Greeks Turn to the Black Market as Another Bailout Showdown Looms

ATHENS — During seven years of a grinding economic crisis, Dimitri Tsamopoulos has lost at least half the clients from his once bustling tax consultancy. But in the past few months, business has jumped, not because the Greek economy is finally recovering but because it is falling even deeper into the abyss.

With the Greek government pushing through more tax increases to comply with austerity requirements, more than 21,000 self-employed workers and small firms have shut down in the past two months, with many seeking help from accountants like Mr. Tsamopoulos to close their books. Yet many are not actually closing their businesses.

“Most of these people will keep working,” Mr. Tsamopoulous said, arching an eyebrow from behind his desk as clients waited in a smoky room outside. “But now, they’ll do it on the black market. They’re saying they need a way to survive.”

Greece is the crisis that never quite goes away for the European Union, and with another tense negotiation with creditors scheduled for this coming week, the country is struggling to recover from the longest downturn in the eurozone. The budget-slashing policies and reform medicine required by creditors have done little to revive growth, leaving Greece even more dependent on the three international bailouts the country has received since 2010.

  7. US pledges ‘unwavering’ commitment, Europe lukewarm

Munich (Germany) (AFP) – US Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday led a chorus of reassurance for allies rattled by Donald Trump’s policy stance but European leaders gave the pledges a lukewarm welcome.

Underlining US loyalty to its old friends, Pence told European leaders and defence experts: “The United States is and will always be your greatest ally.”

“Be assured that President Trump and our people are truly devoted to our transatlantic union,” he said at the Munich Security Conference.

Trump’s criticism of NATO as “obsolete”, his praise for Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, and his softer approach towards Russia have unnerved Washington’s allies.

But Pence and other members of Trump’s administration — Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson — stuck largely to the foreign policy rule book in a major European diplomatic foray this week.

On Russia, the US would not relent in pushing it to honour the Minsk ceasefire accords with Ukraine, said Pence.

“The United States will continue to hold Russia accountable, even as we search for new common ground, which as you know, President Trump believes can be found,” the vice-president said.

  8. Four North Korean suspects fled Malaysia after airport murder

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Four North Korean suspects in the murder of the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un fled Malaysia on the day he was attacked at Kuala Lumpur airport and apparently killed by a fast-acting poison, police said on Sunday.

A North Korean man, a Vietnamese woman and an Indonesian woman have been arrested already in connection with the death of Kim Jong Nam last Monday, which has triggered a diplomatic spat between Malaysia and Pyongyang.

South Korean and U.S. officials believe Kim Jong Nam was killed by agents from the reclusive North, whose diplomats in Kuala Lumpur have sought to prevent an autopsy on the 46-year-old’s body and demanded it be handed over.

“We believe the North Korean regime is behind this incident, considering five suspects are North Koreans,” Jeong Joon-hee, spokesman at South Korea’s Unification Ministry that handles inter-Korea affairs, told a briefing on Sunday.

Kim Jong Nam, the eldest son of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, had spoken out publicly against his family’s dynastic control of the isolated, nuclear-armed nation.

  9. Soros gets his money’s worth: New AZ sheriff won’t honor federal detainers for illegals
    By J.E. Dyer February 18, 2017

Back during the run-up to the November 2016 election, there was a flurry of articles about the money George Soros was putting into “reforming” America’s law enforcement and justice system at the state and local level. His method was funding PACs and other groups supporting progressive candidates for district attorney and sheriff jobs around the country – and opposing candidates who didn’t explicitly favor a progressive agenda.

In all, Soros reportedly spent about $11 million on local district attorney races in 2016. In addition to that total, he spent $2 million on probably the nation’s highest-profile county sheriff’s race: in Maricopa County, Arizona, where “Sheriff Joe” Arpaio faced challenger Paul Penzone. Penzone had lost to Arpaio in 2012, but in 2016, he defeated Arpaio’s bid for a seventh term.

Penzone gratified progressive supporters in January by referring to illegal migrants as “guests.” He has gratified them further this week by announcing that Maricopa County will no longer honor federal “detainers” for illegals whom the county decides it doesn’t need to hold.

Basically, this means that the county will take no positive steps to ensure that individuals whom Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) wants to pick up are turned over. Maricopa County will simply release them, if the county has no reason to hold them. It’s ICE’s problem to keep up with that.

    • I wonder how long before Federal Funds are cut off, and since this is against Arizona law how long before he is charged with violating the law?

    • “Guests?” Party’s over and it time for the “Guests” to go home! Hopefully, with an Anchor Baby under each arm.

  10. Chinese ambassador requested ‘private’ meeting with top Clinton campaign aides
By LU Staff February 18, 2017

Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai requested a meeting with Hillary Clinton’s top aides in January 2016, according to an internal email circulated among the former Secretary of State’s senior presidential campaign officials.

“Chinese Ambassador Cui invited me over to the residence Tuesday for a coffee and to make a request. He wants to have an informal, private, off the record get together with a few of us to discuss the next year and the current state of US-China affairs,” wrote Clinton campaign aide Kurt Campbell in the Jan. 7, 2016, email.

“He asked me to host a social meal at my house in the next month. He was fairly insistent and indicated that he wanted to pass along some perspectives. I told him I’d reach out to you all to see about your judgement on this and possible availability. I’m happy to make some chili and cornbread by the fire but let’s first decide whether this makes sense. Please let me know your thinking,” Campbell said.

The email is one among hundreds to and from Clinton national campaign chairman John Podesta made public by WikiLeaks during the 2016 election cycle.

Emails from The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group seeking comment from recipients of Campbell’s message were opened but no responses were received. The Chinese Embassy’s spokesperson did not respond to TheDCNF’s request for comment.

  11. zero hedge -President of Finland: Putin Not So Bad, NATO Lame, Greatest Threats To Europe Are Terrorism And Migration

The President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö made it clear to CNBC last week that while Russia’s actions involving Crimea must come to a peaceful resolution, the most important issues facing Europe right now are terrorism and migration. Despite Finland pledging $55 Million Euros to NATO, Niinistö also made it clear that European nations need to ultimately be responsible for their own security.

I think that Europeans start to understand that they have to take more responsibility of their own security, in spite of the fact that they are members of NATO.

We still have conscription… …if we call our trained reserves, we have a bigger army than Germany, even though we are some 15 times smaller.

Is the greatest threat to Europe Vladimir Putin?

No, it’s a combination of terrorism and migration. And also, Russia – what happened to Crimea in Ukraine. In the Western parts of the union, people are more shocked with terrorism and migration, and in the Eastern parts, it’s Russia.

Crimea is about the flow of energy into Europe, not some humanitarian crisis – though Putin might want to send some more love their way if he’s going to keep them.

  12. Here is a sign that civilization is falling, a large Church in Alabama is seeking lawmakers approval to form their own police force

Briarwood Presbyterian Church seeks lawmakers’ approval to establish police force

Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills is trying to establish its own police force.

The move requires approval from state lawmakers. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Arnold Mooney (R-Shelby County) cleared its first major hurdle Wednesday. The House Public Safety Committee gave its OK.

Briarwood Presbyterian Church calls this a way to create a safer campus in a fallen world.

Some lawmakers argue allowing a private church to have its own police force could begin a slippery slope.

“What do we do when other church affiliates come and ask for the same thing?” questioned Rep. Mary Moore (D-Birmingham). “They’re not a college. They’re a church and they’re a church asking for police jurisdiction.”

Many questions were posed during Wednesday’s committee meeting.

“Who do the officers answer to?” asked Rep. Chris England (D- Tuscaloosa).

“They would answer to the leadership of the section of the church,” a representative from the church answered.

Rep. Connie Rowe (R- Jasper) is a former police chief. She supports allowing Briarwood to create its own force.

    http://abc3340.com/news/local/briarwood-presbyterian-church-seeks-lawmakers-approval-to-establish-police-force

    • Think long and hard on the implications of this, the Church is wanting to be able to conduct its own legal investigation into any attack on the Church or its members.

Second how many other Churches or Mosques will want the same right?

How long before the large leftist dominated corporations want to form their own police forces?

How long until the political parties want to form their own police forces?

This is a slippery slope, one that shows the lack of trust in the Government and the desire of people to protect their own.

    http://www.americanlibertyreport.com/articles/the-university-of-central-florida-held-a-leftist-fight-club-workshop/

Although most activists on the Left believe they’re the liberal “good guys” fighting “evil, fascist forces” for nothing other than love, peace and understanding, that hasn’t stopped some of their numbers in recent years from adopting the measures of physical violence they typically decry with their whiny protesting.

On college campuses, multiple flashpoints have been experienced ever since an incident in 2015 at the University of Missouri when football players at the school announced they would boycott their sport’s season until the school complied with a list of specified demands, which included increasing “the percentage of black faculty and staff members campus-wide by 10 percent” by 2017 and creating and enforcing “comprehensive racial awareness and inclusion curriculum throughout all campus departments and units, mandatory for all students, faculty, staff and administration.”

At a protest in support of the football players, an assistant professor in the school’s communication department named Melissa Click was caught on video intimidating and having physical contact with student journalists reporting on the protest. The student journalists, Tim Tai and Mark Schierbecker, were merely trying to take some pictures of the protest when Click called for “some muscle” to remove them and was seen grabbing at their cameras.

Schierbecker filed assault charges against Click shortly afterward. Nearly simultaneously, the school’s Chancellor R. Bowen Loft and President Tim Wolfe resigned from their positions. Republican lawmakers in the state have urged Click’s resignation as well.

  14. Good news for a change

    Failing Companies’ Failed Politics

Recently, the profits of no less than four major, public American companies have been significantly affected by the politics of the firms, which have led to consumer backlash against them, particularly amongst conservative voters. Kellogg’s, Target, Nordstrom’s and Twitter all have seen profits decrease and in some cases physical locations close because consumers have angrily responded to official company policies and political stances.

    Twitter

The communication company built around 140-character messages is hurting in a serious way after dramatically lower revenue was announced for the fourth quarter of last year. This continues a long downward trend for the company, which has suspended numerous users for “politically incorrect” or hate speech, even though such messaging is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Rather than encouraging controversy, which would be good public relations for the firm, the company actively shuts down users and has even threatened to suspend President Trump himself. Twitter’s stock price has fallen by more than two-thirds in the past three years, and the company has laid off hundreds of employees and dramatically shrunk the size of its headquarters office in San Francisco.

  15. A Month of Islam and Multiculturalism in Germany: January 2017

January 1. Some 2,000 “highly aggressive” migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East gathered at the central train station in Cologne and the square in front of the iconic Cologne Cathedral, where mass sexual assaults occurred on New Year’s Eve 2015. A massive police presence consisting of 1,700 officers deterred mayhem. Police reported three sexual assaults on New Year’s Eve 2016, compared to more than a thousand on the same day in 2015.

January 1. In Berlin, at least 22 women were sexually assaulted during New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Brandenburg Gate, despite the presence of 1,700 police officers. Police initially reported six assaults, but after inquiries from local media raised that number. In Hamburg, at least 14 women were sexually assaulted. Police arrested three Iraqis, three Syrians, two Afghans, one Eritrean and one German-Russian.

January 2. Greens Party Leader Simone Peter accused the Cologne Police Department of racial profiling after a tweet referred to North African migrants as “Nafris.” The head of the DPolG, Ernst Walter, explained that “Nafri” is not derogatory but rather a technical acronym used by the police to refer to “North African intensive offender” (nordafrikanische Intensivtäter). “If a North African person is suspected of committing a crime, he is a ‘Nafri,'” Walter said. Cologne Police Chief Jürgen Mathies added: “From the experiences of the past New Year’s Eve, from experience gained by police raids as a whole, a clear impression has emerged here about which persons are to be checked. They are not gray-haired older men or blond-haired young women.”

January 2. Police in Saarland arrested Hasan A., a 38-year-old asylum seeker from Syria who solicited €180,000 ($192,000) in funds from the Islamic State in order to carry out a high-casualty terrorist attack in Germany. The prosecutor’s office in Saarbrücken said the man asked the Islamic State for the money to purchase eight vehicles (€22,500 each) which would be camouflaged as police cars, loaded with 400-500 kilos of explosives, and exploded into a large crowd. Hasan said he wanted the money to support his family in Syria, not to carry out attacks in Germany.

January 3. Amnesty International called for an investigation of the police in Cologne for the alleged “racial profiling” of North African migrants who were suspected of promoting violence on New Year’s Eve.

Perhaps, in the light of the harm dhimmitude can do to both civic life and faith, the Catholic Church might re-assess its stance toward Islam from one of friendly engagement to cautionary disengagement. As radical jihadists continue to martyr Christians throughout the world, such a re-evaluation of Islam by the Vatican seems appropriate.

These hate crimes against Christians are occurring against a backdrop of fifteen centuries of hostile, relations between Christianity and Islam — from the Islamic takeover of Persia, the great Christian Byzantine Empire in Turkey, North Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Greece and Southern Spain.

As Catholics comprise more than half of the globe’s two billion Christians, a sober reassessment of Islam by Rome could be of great import and attract more people to Christianity when, as with Brexit, they see that the Church is aligned with a reality they see every day with their eyes.

A decision by the Vatican to distance itself from trying to please Muslims, many of whom would presumably only be pleased by converting Christians to Islam, might even evolve into a more realistic understanding of the Islamic faith by the Catholic hierarchy. If the Church, on the other hand, is hoping to convert Muslims to Christianity, then we have two proselytizing religions, each trying to convert the other, but by different means.

At some point, the Catholic Church might raise the issue of persecution of Christian minorities in Muslim majority countries at international fora such as the United Nations. The Church also could publicly ask Muslims of good will to express their solidarity with the persecuted and request international organizations to intervene to protect Christians.

  19. the gateway pundit – BREAKING REPORT: White House Deputy Chief of Staff and #NeverTrumper Kate Walsh Source of LEAKS

GotNews reported Sunday that one of the primary sources of the series of leaks that were designed to undermine the Trump Administration and his presidency have been coming from none other than #NeverTrumper Kate Walsh. She is being investigated as one of the primary persons of interest that have been distributing highly confidential information to sources such as The (Failing) New York Times, and others.

When TGP reached out to GotNews founder, Charles Johnson, for comment on the story he said that it was “100% reliable, I’m unwilling to reveal the primary White House sources, but Walsh was behind the leaks.”

    From GotNews:

“Everyone knows not to talk to her in the White House unless you want to see it in the press,” says a source close to the president. “The only question is whether or not she’s doing it at the behest of [White House Chief of Staff] Reince Priebus or if she’s doing it to advance herself in DC media circles.”

One source in particular stands out: Walsh is close to Maggie Habberman, a New York Times reporter who wrote fawning pro-Republican National Committee stories during the presidential election. Walsh has also planted stories in The Washington Post and Politico.

Walsh is referred to as “Madame President” in the White House, says a senior aide. “It isn’t a compliment.”

Walsh would have significant access as she controls the president’s schedule. There’s also reportedly a trove of e-mails where Katie Walsh and Reince Priebus discuss how to rid themselves of Trump, according to a former #NeverTrump consultant.

“The president and his allies have been deliberately feeding her fake information in order to find her network,” says a source close to the president’s family. “It’s been going well.”

Walsh was a #NeverTrump Republican during the campaign. Neither Walsh nor her family were supporters during the campaign, says a source from Walsh’s hometown of St. Louis.

A White House investigation is planned into Walsh, who couldn’t be reached for comment.

This comes shortly after the Washington Examiner has reported that The House Intelligence Chair, Devin Nunes, set forth that there are also Obama-era officials in the Trump Administration, who are leaking formation as the Administration re-staffs.

  20. Zuckerberg: My Facebook manifesto to re-boot globalisation (BBC, Feb 19, 2017)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/business-38998884

“Mark Zuckerberg has revealed deep-seated concerns that the tide is turning against globalisation.

In an interview with the BBC, the Facebook founder said that fake news, polarised views and “filter bubbles” were damaging “common understanding”.

He said people had been left behind by global growth, sparking demands to “withdraw” from the “connected world”.

In a call to action, he said people must not “sit around and be upset”, but act to build “social infrastructures”.

“When I started Facebook, the mission of connecting the world was not controversial,” he told me.

He told the BBC: “There are people around the world that feel left behind by globalisation and the rapid changes that have happened, and there are movements as a result to withdraw from some of that global connection.”

Mr Zuckerberg’s interview comes alongside the publication of a 5,500-word letter he has written about the future of Facebook and the global economy.

In it Mr Zuckerberg quotes Abraham Lincoln who spoke of acting “in concert”, and talks about “spiritual needs”, civic engagement and says that many people have “lost hope for the future”.

“For a couple of decades, may be longer, people have really sold this idea that as the world comes together everything is going to get better,” he said.

“I think the reality is that over the long term that will be true, and there are pieces of infrastructure that we can build to make sure that a global community works for everyone.

“But I do think there are some ways in which this idea of globalisation didn’t take into account some of the challenges it was going to create for people, and now I think some of what you see is a reaction to that…”

  22. Diane Abbott fears ‘TURBOCHARGED radicalisation’ of white men after racist attacks online (express, Feb 19, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/769246/diane-abbott-labour-racist-attacks-radicalisation-white-men-sky-sophy-ridge

“DIANE ABBOTT has spoken of the tirade of racist abuse targeted at her and said she would have “thought twice” about entering politics 30-years-ago if she had known what she was in for.

The shadow home secretary aired concerns about the “radicalisation of white men online” and feared it had become “turbocharged”.

Speaking on Sky News’ Sophy Ridge on Sunday, the Labour Party MP made the case for a Parliamentary inquiry into abuse after it reached new heights and prompted her to speak out about it.

“It’s the level of abuse, particularly in recent weeks, what we were getting and have had for some time is almost daily abuse, being called a b****, a n*****, rape threats, people saying I should be hanged,” she said.

“And it reached a particular pitch in the last few weeks and I thought to myself ‘had I known it would be like this 30 years on from being elected, I’d have thought twice for running for Parliament at all’.

“People don’t realise because they dehumanise you so they can call you names, can say you should be hanged or die in some horrible way.”

Ms Abbott, who upped her security following the killing of Labour MP Jo Cox, aired concerns about how the internet and social media was fuelling abuse against her.

Speaking of “radicalisation”, she said: “I think it’s become turbocharged. When I was a new MP, if you wanted to send racist abuse, you wrote a letter in green ink usually, and you got one or two of those letters a week.

“Now you can press a button and threaten to rape somebody and the more they see some of this stuff online the more they feel encouraged and emboldened to become turbocharged and its become worse.

“It’s almost as if they want to drive some of us out of politics.”

However, she said she was encouraged by the support of fellow female MPs within her party and said it was important to “stand together” on the issue.

“I have had a lot of support from Labour women MPs in recent weeks and I’m very glad of that,” she said.

“I think we have to stand together because it is a concerted attempt to delegitimise women in politics.””

“A KNIFE-WIELDING attacker was shot by French police today after stabbing a woman in broad daylight.

The 23-year-old suspect, struck in the south-western town of Montauban, near Tolouse, shortly after midday.

ISIS supporters have shared news of the attack on chat app Telegram, sparking fears it was linked to the terror group.

Police followed the assailant, who may have been drunk, after he was seen driving erratically in a VW Golf registered locally.

They then witnessed the driver jumping out of the car and stabbing a woman in the shoulder blade.

He then ran towards a couple and tried to wound them too, but was then shot by police, who described him as having been “neutralised”.

The victim is in a stable condition in hospital…”

  23. Gold prices rocket as markets lose FAITH in Donald Trump despite FTSE and Dow SOARING (express, Feb 19, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/finance/city/769291/Gold-prices-Trump-Trade-Dow-Jones-FTSE-market-crash

“GOLD prices are rising amid fears that record high stock markets spurred by the so-called Trump trade could be heading for a crash.

Investors have piled into the precious metal pushing it up to $1,239 – its highest level since November – as shares continue to bounce to highs never seen before.

The rise in gold prices suggests that markets are worried the bubble could be about to burst, as the yellow commodity is considered a safe place for money during times of financial crisis and volatility.

Markets are set to be tested when Donald Trump addresses the US congress on February 28 with more detail on tax and spending plans set to be unveiled.

The new President’s expected economy plans have helped drive the surge seen in the Dow Jones and S&P, as well as Britain’s FTSE 100.

But many experts now believe the Trump Trade could be nearing the end of its course – to lift gold prices higher still…”

    • Euro to COLLAPSE – people rush to buy gold as trust in single currency DISAPPEARS (express, Feb 19, 2017)
      http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/769288/Gold-Euro-Foreign-Exchange-Collapse-Alan-Greenspan

“THE former head of the US federal reserve has warned the euro is on the verge of collapse saying he has “grave concerns” about its future.

And revered economist Alan Greenspan says it’s time the European Central Bank (ECB) came clean about the state of the economy as the bank’s chief Mario Draghi scrambles to save the flailing institution.

Mr Greenspan, 90, was the chairman of the Federal Reserve of the United States from 1987 to 2006, and predicted the scale of the US subprime mortgage scandal which precipitated the global financial collapse.

Now as investors turn to gold to try to stem their losses Mr Greenspan says it’s only a matter of time before the eurozone collapses.

He told Gold Investor magazine: “The European Central Bank (ECB) has greater problems than the Federal Reserve.

“The asset side of the ECB’s balance sheet is larger than ever before, having grown steadily since Mario Draghi said he would do whatever it took to preserve the euro.

“And I have grave concerns about the future of the Euro itself.

“Northern Europe has, in effect, been funding the deficits of the South; that cannot continue indefinitely. The eurozone is not working.”

The euro has been plagued with scandal after scandal with a stress test last year showing that many of the 19 countries which took on the currency from 2002 are facing unprecedented debts.

Greece is currently in the midst of yet another financial crisis with withdrawals from bank accounts indicating the public is prepping for a crash…”

        • The Marxists economics that the entire world has been using over the last 8 years is failing, as it always does. The Central Banks and the nations are scared because people are seeing the looming failure of command driven economies and are trying to shelter their wealth in precious metals and probably gem stones.

        • What struck me is how they are trying to put the blame on Trump but the people overseas are still buying stock in US companies to try and shelter their funds when the Euro and the EU collapse. Given what is happening in Canada there is probably a lot of Canadian money moving South to be sheltered.

  24. Why Israel’s and Europe’s fates are intertwined
    Posted on February 19, 2017 12:30
    By Timon Dias

It’s a sentiment that only a few contemporary thinkers have touched on. And when they did, it was in a fleeting manner, without elaborating on why it is that if Israel falls, Europe will soon follow. It’s not a new sentiment. A year after the Six Day War, Eric Hoffer, America’s “blue-collar philosopher“, wrote a short paragraph about the matter.

“At this moment, Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally. We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us. And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war to realise how vital the survival of Israel is to America and the West in general. I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us. Should Israel perish, the Holocaust will be upon us.“

More recently, historian Niall Ferguson wrote:

    • Niall Ferguson was a flack for the Saudis for years. Junk. Spurious correlations and unwholesome speculation.

      _________
This I won’t write: We’re in such bad shape I’m looking to Israel to bail US out! The MB and whoever else is pulling 0’s strings is dug in too deep here. Termites, moles, rats.

      • Low intensity civil war, chaos, riots and assassination squads on both sides. We are going to go through a major remaking in the US and hopefully we will return to something close to what the Founding Fathers wanted.

Yes we will need Israeli help just as they will need our help. The world is changing in ways that we can’t imagine and will be totally different in as short a time as 20 years maybe even 10 years. Technology is going to make it easier for the tyrants to control people and for the people to rebel.

I refuse to think that freedom will fall in the US, we will be changed and we will probably become more barbaric but freedom will survive and we (the US, Israel and any other nations that remain free) will start rebuilding civilization. It may (probably will) take us a long time to dig our of the Dark Age that is our probable future. Time and the help of God but we will survive as a free nation and we will rebuild civilization, we will go into space and to other star systems and colonize the Galaxy. Think big, never be afraid to think big, think so big you make the builders of ancient monuments with their names carved in them look like people with small egos.

This is something that is to be desired, this will give the States and the people the ability to go around the Swamp and change the Constitution in ways that will make draining the swamp easier.

Google “Mark Levin’s Liberty Amendments” then read and think, they will restore a lot of power to the States and the people.

Don’t fear a runaway convention 3/4ths of the states have to vote to accept any change before it becomes part of the Constitution and all of his Amendments have a limited time when they can be accepted. No one at a convention would let any Amendment out of the convention with an open ended time for acceptance.

  25. Germany: mob of 100 Africans threatens police

    By Stefan Frank

Up to a hundred black Africans threatened and insulted three police officers in Hamburg’s notorious St. Georg district this week. According to the newspaper Die Welt, there were “tumultuous scenes” after the police had arrested a young man from Somalia. The man had refused to leave a betting agency from which he had been barred. Instead, he aggressively threatened the staff. “Even before the arrival of the police, the 18-year-old threatened the two employees with cutting their throats and emphasised this with a gesture“, said police spokesman Ulf Wundrack.

Subsequently, a mob of a hundred Africans then showed up and turned against the police. It was only after backup arrived that the situation was brought under control. The officers were faced with calls to “piss off“. Others yelled: “Here is not America“. This slogan was heard and seen in Hamburg for the first time two weeks ago, when scores of Africans protested against alleged “racist police violence“, carrying a banner which read (in English): “Here is not America. Stop shooting us. Black lives matter.“

The cited source of their anger was a police officer who had shot a 33-year-old man from Ghana in the leg, after the Ghanaian had threatened pedestrians with a knife and attacked the officer upon his arrival. The assailant – which the local Hamburger Abendblatt called “the victim” – was transported to the hospital where an emergency operation was conducted. He is in stable condition.

Joachim Gauck (German president) received around 50 family members of 12 Berlin terror attack victims Friday afternoon. No official memorial ceremony took place, which was criticised by the family members at the meeting. Other family members also criticised the insensitive manner in which they had been treated. For a long time, they hadn’t been given any information about the victims, a bill from the coroner however was swiftly sent to them. This bill was the first communication they received from authorities. The bill mentioned that they must pay up within the given time frame, or else they’ll be threatened with a collection agency.
Family members who were unaware that their relative had been a victim of the attack were asked for victims “DNA material” by police, without even knowing the reason behind it. The answer to this was “It’s your own fault if you don’t know by know what this is about”.
Family members who were aware that they had lost a relative in the attack were refused entry to the funeral service at the “Gedächtnisskirche” (church next to scene of the crime) by security guards. Reasoning: The funeral service was being attended by high-profile politicians. Gauck claims he wasn’t aware of this.

The National Front leader is hoping to burnish her credentials as a defender of Christians in the Middle East, ahead of France’s April 23 presidential elections.

Le Pen is a leading candidate in the polls. She is running on an anti-immigrant and anti-European Union platform that critics say is a cover for islamophobia and xenophobia.

The intelligence panel’s chairman, Richard Burr (R-N.C.), and vice chairman Mark Warner (D-Va.) sent letters out Friday, according to the AP.

    • ISIS is breaking up and the MB will be left with only al Qaeda as a combat arm, this will place Iran in a good position to gain more power in that region and will cause the MB to work to ally itself with Saudi (I think they already are) and other Sunni nations as they work to prevent a Shiite Caliphate from forming.

The MB might also move closer to Erdogan, they want an Arab Caliphate and Caliph but will probably settle for a Turkish one as long as it is a Sunni Caliphate.

  31. reuters – Islamic State posts video of man it says was Egypt church bomber

Islamic State published a video on Sunday threatening Egyptian Christians and showing the last statement of a man it said was responsible for the deadly bombing in December of a Coptic cathedral in Cairo.

The masked man in battle-dress, whom the group identified as Abu Abdallah al-Masri, is seen encouraging militants all over the world not to give up and promising Islamists jailed in Egypt they will be freed soon, when the group “liberates” Cairo.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had already identified the bomber as a 22-year-old student called Mahmoud Shafik, and it is believed Abu Abdallah al-Masri was his assumed name. He had been detained for two months in 2014 before joining an Islamic State cell in Sinai, the government said.

“Finally, to my brothers in captivity: rejoice, you believers, do not falter or grieve. I swear to God we will very soon liberate Cairo and free you from captivity. We will come bearing explosives, I swear we will, so rejoice you believers,” he said in the video.

At least 28 people, mostly women and children, were killed in December when a bomb exploded in a chapel adjoining St Mark’s Cathedral, the seat of the Coptic papacy.

Orthodox Copts, who comprise about 10 percent of Egypt’s 90 million people, are the Middle East’s largest Christian community.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombing, its deadliest attack in Egypt outside the Sinai Peninsula, where it has been waging an insurgency since 2013.

The Cairo attack, coupled with the group’s use of a new “Islamic State in Egypt” logo as opposed to “Sinai Province”, suggests an expansion of operations to the rest of the country.

The Egyptian government said in December that the bomber supported the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood movement. But the Brotherhood condemned the attack and accused Sisi’s administration of failing to protect the church.

Sisi took power in 2013, deposing the Brotherhood’s President Mohamed Mursi, and has since outlawed the group as part of a crackdown in which hundreds of Islamists were killed and thousands jailed.

The Brotherhood says it is peaceful movement but it has split into rival wings, and some erstwhile supporters have formed splinter groups which carry out attacks on police and judicial officials.

Disillusioned by its ill-fated flirtation with democracy, some younger Brotherhood supporters have gone to fight in Syria or joined the local arm of Islamic State, which since 2013 has killed hundreds of soldiers and police in Sinai.

Islamic State extremists threaten to eliminate Egypt’s Christians

The radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) on Sunday released a new propaganda video, threatening to eliminate Egypt’s Christians and vowing to ‘liberate Cairo’.

The video also shows the last statement of a man it said was responsible for the deadly bombing of a Coptic cathedral in Cairo on 11 December, that killed at least 28 people, mostly women and children.

Abu Abdallah al-Masri, the alleged bomber of the St Mark’s Cathedral, the seat of the Coptic papacy, appeared in the video encouraging jihadists all over the world not to give up.

Orthodox Copts, who comprise about 10 percent of Egypt’s 90 million people, are the Middle East’s largest Christian community.

The masked militant also promised Islamists jailed in Egypt that they will be freed soon, when ISIS “liberates” Cairo.

“To my brothers in captivity: rejoice, you believers, do not falter or grieve. I swear to God we will very soon liberate Cairo and free you from captivity. We will come bearing explosives, I swear we will, so rejoice you believers,” al-Masri said.

Although ISIS claimed responsibility for the cathedral’s attack in December, the Egyptian government said that the bomber was a supporter the Muslim Brotherhood movement. However, the Brotherhood condemned the attack and accused Sisi’s administration of failing to protect the church.

ISIS called for eliminating Egypt’s Christians, describing them as “apostates” and “enemies of Allah”.

AKARTA, Indonesia — The United States deployed aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to patrol the increasingly contentious South China Sea, despite Beijing’s warnings not to challenge its sovereignty in the resource-rich sea.

The Navy described Saturday’s launch as the beginning of “routine operations” in the South China Sea. China claims most of the sea as its own, despite overlapping territorial and jurisdictional claims from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

Last week at a news conference, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang, denounced advance news of the deployment.

“China has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters,” he said. “China respects and upholds the freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea which countries enjoy under international law, but firmly opposes any country’s attempt to undermine China’s sovereignty and security in the name of the freedom of navigation and overflight.”

He added that China urged the U.S. to “refrain from challenging China’s sovereignty and security” in the sea.

    • Once again we are getting so tied up in what is happening our North America, Europe and the Middle East that we forget the other regions. China is still making moves and recently talked openly (in a Chinese Government owned paper) about having the right to say who can sail in the South China Sea and what they can carry.

Future historians are going to have a field day arguing about how much of this chaos has been caused by Obama destroying the US power, we need his hold overs out of the US Government as fast as we can get them out and we need to rebuild out military as fast as we can, like yesterday at the latest.
