      • Precedent for immigration policies with implicit restrictions related to ethno-religious identity comes most recently in http://jacksonvanik.com/ , which was repealed in 2012 (was it?)
The Jackson-Vanik amendment (Section 401, Title IV of the Trade Act-1974 of 1974) affects U.S. trade relations with communist or former communist countries that restrict freedom of emigration and other human rights. It was a response to the Soviet Union’s “diploma taxes” levied on Jews attempting to emigrate. The amendment was signed into law on January 3, 1975 by President Gerald Ford following with a unanimous Congressional vote.

  2. ‘You’re PATHETIC!’ Hopkins compares anti-Trump petition signers to ‘eight-year-olds’ (express, Jan 30, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/760542/Donald-Trump-petition-stop-state-visit-Katie-Hopkins-LBC

“KATIE HOPKINS ripped into those who called for Donald Trump’s state visit to Britain to be scrapped – likening their demands to those of a small child.

The petition calling for Theresa May to cancel President Trump’s visit to the UK came after the Republican controversially signed an executive order to temporarily ban refugees, from mostly Muslim countries, from entering the US.

The ban sparked widespread fury with protests taking place across the globe, while Britons responded by launching an online campaign to halt the businessman’s planned visit to Downing Street and Buckingham Palace.

With nearly a million signatures already calling for Mrs May to abort the trip, Hopkins unleashed a seething attack on Britons who have signed the petition on her LBC show on Sunday.

Branding the signers “pathetic”, Hopkins roared: “You knew that was coming, didn’t you? You knew.

“The minute Theresa May stood there and said that she’d extended the warm invitation of the Queen to Donald Trump. You knew.

“I could already hear the clacking of the knitting needles from the p****y marchers as they decided what hats they might wear to protest his state visit.”…”

“DONALD Trump has accused two former presidential candidates of “looking to start World War 3” after they branded his immigration policy “hasty”.

The President took to Twitter to criticise Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham after they released a statement warning about the potential counterproductive effects of Trump’s executive order on travel from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Trump tweeted: “The joint statement of former presidential candidates John McCain & Lindsey Graham is wrong – they are sadly weak on immigration…”

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/760655/Donald-Trump-Muslim-ban-visas-America-British-citizens-Boris-Johnson-Mo-Farah

“THE US EMBASSY has claimed British citizens WILL be barred from America under Donald Trump’s travel ban.

In an apparent contradiction to the UK Government’s position, the US Embassy issued an ‘Urgent Notice’ on its website telling UK citizens who share dual nationality with one of seven mainly-Muslim countries covered by the restrictions not to apply for visas.

It means individuals such as Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi could yet be affected.

The notice states: “Per U.S. Presidential Executive Order signed on January 27, 2017, visa issuance to aliens from the countries of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen has been suspended effective immediately until further notification.

“If you are a national, or dual national, of one of these countries, please do not schedule a visa appointment or pay any visa fees at this time….”

“POLAND is to tighten its border controls by announcing a change to the law that will prioritise the deportation of illegal immigrants.

Polish Interior Minister Mariusz B?aszczak announced a bill giving protection to refugees in Poland will be revised “to quickly deport” those who enter the country illegally.

  6. Emboldened by Trump, some police unions seek to overhaul Obama’s reforms

WASHINGTON/CHICAGO (Reuters) – Steve Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, had a blunt message for Donald Trump during a meeting in September: court-ordered reforms aimed at curbing police abuses in the midwestern city are not working.

Loomis and two other attendees said Trump seemed receptive to Loomis’s concerns that federally monitored police reforms introduced during the Obama administration in some cities in response to complaints of police bias and abuse are ineffective and impose an onerous burden on police forces.

Trump, Loomis said, was “taken aback by the waste of money” when the union chief told him that federal monitors overseeing his city’s police department earned $250 an hour – a standard salary for the position.

“I think he’s going to have a more sensible approach to rising crime rates,” Loomis said of now President Trump. “What I got from the meeting was that Donald Trump is going be a very strong supporter of law and order.”

  7. Alarm in Greece over third migrant death in one camp in a week

ATHENS (Reuters) – A migrant was found dead on Monday in his tent on Greece’s Lesbos island, the third death there in a week, raising alarm about conditions in Greek camps.

The man is believed to be about 20 and from Pakistan, a police official on the island said. His death at the island’s Moria camp follows those on Jan. 24 and Jan. 28 of a 22-year-old Egyptian man and a 46-year-old Syrian.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the deaths and have ruled out foul play, the police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“There is concern, and the force is on alert to investigate what’s going on,” the official said.

Greek media reported that the first two men died after inhaling fumes from a stove, but authorities have declined to confirm or deny that.

About 4,800 refugees and migrants live in two camps on Lesbos, roughly 1,000 over capacity. Conditions at Moria, a former hilltop military base, have deteriorated as asylum-seekers wait for months for decisions on their applications.

A Greek government spokesman was not immediately reachable for comment.

  12. Germany: Fight against terrorism does not justify Trump’s travel ban – Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that the fight against international terrorism “does not in any way justify putting people of certain belief under general suspicion,” during a press conference with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Berlin, Monday. The statement was made in regard to US President Donald Trump’s executive order banning travel to the US from seven Muslim-majority nations.

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “The necessary and decisive battle against terrorism does not in any way justify putting people of certain belief under general suspicion, in this case people of the Muslim belief or of a certain origin. In my opinion, this act contradicts the basic principles of international refugee help and international cooperation. The Federal Chancellery as well as the Foreign Ministry will do everything they can, especially for those dual citizens affected, to clear up the legal ramifications and to emphatically represent their interests according to the law. We have close consultations with our European partners about this entire issue.”

8 Things You Need To Know About Trump’s Executive Order On Refugees, Immigration

Late on Friday afternoon, President Trump signed an executive order significantly cracking down on entry into the United States by citizens from Muslim countries Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. It quickly fell under fire from the media, which suggested that Trump was doing something unprecedented, racist, Islamophobic, and utterly horrifying. Then, on Saturday, a New York federal judge put a stay on the order.

So, what do you need to know about the order?

    http://www.dailywire.com/news/12895/8-things-you-need-know-about-trumps-executive-ben-shapiro?utm_source=shapironewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=070516-news-title&utm_campaign=lead

    • Poor Ben.
He was born in 1984, weened on noxious ideas. He’s suffered considerably, but he’s very sincere and very smart. He’s turning himself around.

Like a commenter on ElderOfZiyon, dead-loyal to 0 and the Witch. Held out against the all-but-unanimous support of DJT among Orthodox Jews. Overly verbal, she kept throwing her junk in endless screeds.

Then she was horrified: UN Res. 2334 was naked hatred, nothing else. The scales fell from her eyes, she had to rethink everything.

She came back broken, pitiful. But we’re worlds more tolerant than the enemy camp. Ben Shapiro made some career-busting decisions, but he’ll be ok. He’ll be a tremendous asset someday.

      • He has always been conservative but he doesn’t trust DJT, as you said he is coming around. He is at least at least honest enogu to admit when DJT does good.

  15. Former ECB hawk: ‘Destroy Eurozone to make Europe thrive’

Jürgen Stark, who served on the ECB’s executive board during the financial crisis, said it is time to “think the unthinkable. And it is already unthinkable to think about the restart of Europe, which means we have to be creative. But in order to be creative, you have to destruct [sic] something.” In an interview published by The Telegraph, Stark is critical of the ECB, because:

“The ECB talks a lot about structural reforms. It has issued research papers about the effects of structural reforms in the medium to longer term – this has no effect. Policy is not in line with communication. As long as the ECB gives this signal in its operations to the governments that ‘we are the backstop’ and ‘we will prevent country ‘a‘ or country ‘b’ from becoming insolvent’, there will be no structural reforms. The politicians don’t feel the heat.“

Continuing his discussion of the core problems of the Eurozone, Stark mentions the “different economic structures,” “different economic performances,” of the various Eurozone countries and how there is no longer convergence, but rather divergence of their economies. After a calm beginning in 1999, followed by the “perfect storm” of 2008, necessary reforms have not been made and nothing has been resolved. Stark’s solution is to ‘reset’ Europe:

A woman who delivered a baby boy just a few hours ago in a hospital in the city of Alanya, in Southern Turkey, is on the verge of being arrested by police. Outside of the hospital where she gave birth, a group of law enforcement officers is waiting with the aim of detaining her, a former member of the Turkish parliament claims.

Feyzi ??ba?aran tweeted, the woman, Fadime Günay, is still recovering from being in labour yesterday evening in the Alanya Ba?kent Hospital. When the police arrived at the location the officers demanded Günay was forthwith to be released from the clinic. According to the Turkish Minute she will be detained if the attention warrant is not officially cancelled by 7 o’clock this morning local time.

Günays husband has already been apprehended on accusations of having ties to the movement of the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, which the regime of president Recep Erdogan considers to be the mastermind of the failed coup attempt of July 15.

  17. Turkey: The Purges Continue

    by Burak Bekdil
    January 30, 2017 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/9856/turkey-purges

Philipp Schwartz was a Hungarian-born neuropathologist who worked for the Goethe University in Frankfurt for 14 years until he was fired in 1933 for being Jewish. After his — and other scholars’ — dismissal, he convinced the then decade-old modern Turkish Republic to admit persecuted German professors to positions at Turkish universities. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the secular founder of the Turkish state, enthusiastically agreed to Schwartz’s proposal. Turkey quickly admitted 150 German Jewish professors. Schwartz was appointed as director of the Department of Pathology at the University of Istanbul. More than seven decades after, a German initiative that bears Schwartz’s name is returning the favor.

In the first week of 2017, another 631 Turkish researchers and professors were dismissed from their universities, adding to thousands who were purged during the second half of 2016. Several Turkish scholars are now reversing Schwartz’s path: In the fall of 2016, the Philipp Schwartz Initiative received more applications from Turkey than war-torn Syria or any other country. Turks now account for 46% of all applicants worldwide. As the Brussels-based European affairs weekly newspaper Politico put it: “Turkey loses its brains.”

Turkey’s problem is bigger than just literally losing its brains. The country apparently is also figuratively losing its brains. News headlines are so confusing that often one cannot decide whether he is reading a real newspaper or the Turkish version of The Onion, reflecting a collective, socio-pathological frenzy — ironically Schwartz’s work of science.

An Islamist and militantly pro-Erdogan newspaper, Yeni Akit, ran the photo of what looks like a main battle tank, claiming that this weapons system had been developed by Aselsan, a state-controlled defense company, and was capable of “even stopping an atomic bomb.” Yeni Akit belongs to an “elite” group of media outlets whose editors often find a seat aboard Erdogan’s private jet when he travels abroad for state visits. What is more worrying than the absurdity of Yeni Akit’s claim is that few Turks would question the story’s authenticity.

    • A 4-year-old child:
The Turks treat him as a terrorist in absentia. Cemil Barlas, a pro-Erdogan journalist, tweeted that “… in whatever way he should be used [implying torture], that child should be used to make the killer talk. There is no moral harm in that.”

People who think this way are Turks. There’s no civilizing them anywhere.

  18. Trump Mulls Banning Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Group
Senior members of Trump’s transition team told reporters the White House is considering adopting the policy.

    http://www.clarionproject.org/analysis/trump-mulls-banning-muslim-brotherhood-terrorist-group

The White House is mulling designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, according to unnamed members of Trump’s transition team who described a faction in favor and a faction against the move.

A senior member of Trump’s transition team, speaking on condition of anonymity told Reuters, “I know it has been discussed. I’m in favor of it.”

A bill to designate the international Islamist group the Muslim Brotherhood is gathering steam in Congress.

Clarion Project spearheaded a campaign to educate legislators and move the bill forward over the past year. The bill currently has bipartisan support.

  19. Prominent Christians Oppose Prioritizing Christian Refugees
Some Christian leaders condemned Washington’s decision to start prioritizing Christians when considering refugee applications.

enior Christian leaders from various sects have spoken out against U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to give first preference to religious minorities when accepting refugees.

Trump’s recent Executive Order on immigration mandated that when the refugee resettlement program is restarted, following a 120-day suspension, it will prioritize Christian refugees and those of other persecuted faiths, as opposed to Muslims when dealing with refugees from Syria and Iraq.

Last year Christians made up almost half of the 85,000 refugees admitted to the United States. The U.S. allowed in 37,521 Christians and 38,901 Muslims in 2016, according to Pew Research. Of refugees admitted from Syria in 2016, 99% were Muslim and just 1% were Christian.

Those objecting include the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the multidenominational Church World Service.

“We believe in assisting all, regardless of their religious beliefs,” said Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, the chairman of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops committee on migration said in a statement.

While clearly motivated by an admirable sense of equality, their objections do not make sense in the light of the reality faced by Christians across the Middle East, but in Syria and Iraq in particular.

“Austria’s chancellor said Monday he will seek to ban full-face veils in public, as part of a wide-ranging government programme aimed at fending off the challenge of the far-right.

“The full-face veil will be banned in public spaces,” Christian Kern said after ministers signed off on the new programme of policies set to be implemented over the coming 18 months.

There was no mention of a headscarf ban for civil servants but the text said that state representatives must “present themselves as religiously neutral”.

Kern said he wanted to avoid “giving 600,000 Muslims in Austria the feeling that they are not part of our society.”

The 35-page programme also includes beefing up surveillance and security measures, obliging migrants granted the right to stay to sign an “integration contract” and a “statement of values”.

“Those who are not prepared to accept Enlightenment values will have to leave our country and society,” according to the text.

During the AU’s two-day summit, which is currently being held in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, Zuma criticized U.S. President, Donald Trump’s decision to ban immigration from seven African Muslim-majority countries including , Libya, Somalia, and Sudan.

Zuma described Trump’s decision as “one of the greatest challenges,” for the continent, adding that this decision heralded “very turbulent times” for Africa.

“The very country to which many of our people were taken as slaves during the transatlantic slave trade has now decided to ban refugees from some of our countries,” said Zuma…”

“More than 980 terror suspects were detained in Turkey over the past seven days, the Interior Ministry said on Jan. 30.

They included 625 suspected members of the Fethullah Gülen network, widely belived to have orchestrated the fialed coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

Others included 328 who had suspected links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and 26 suspected militants of Islamic State and Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Fourty-one of the PKK uspects an done ISIL suspect were arrested, the ministry said in a written statement.

Police also detained seven other suspects over alleged links to an outlawed leftist group.

During the operations, “four terrorists were neutralized” the statement said, adding three were captured, while another surrendered to security forces.

Turkish authorities use the word “neutralized” in their statements to imply the militants in question were killed, captured, or otherwise incapacitated.

Additionally, 21 improvised explosive devices and 25 shelters were destroyed by the security forces, who seized 418 kilograms of materials used in manufacturing explosives, along with 17 grenades and 43 weapons.

  29. DAILY MAIL – Hawks on a plane! Picture of ’80’ birds of prey being ‘flown on a jet by Saudi Prince’ causes storm on the internet

Some Middle Eastern airlines do provide for transportation of falcons

The transportation of falcons on Middle Eastern airlines is fairly commonplace, with Qatar Airways allowing up to six of the birds to be transported in economy class, with prices ranging from £90 to £500 per bird depending on the destination.

Etihad also provides for transportation of the birds, and a statement on its website said: ‘We accept the carriage of falcons in the main aircraft cabin provided that all the necessary documents have been obtained. We also accept falcons as checked baggage.’

  30. DAILY MAIL – Get with the program or go! White House’s ultimatum to more than 100 foreign service officers as they sign scathing complaint about travel ban

State Department employees harboring anger about President Donald Trump’s travel ban are welcome to find a new place to work, White House declared
‘They should either get with the program or they can go,’ White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said of diplomats signing a dissent memo
Draft of the dissent cable says Trump’s extreme vetting order will ‘immediately’ sour relations with the countries affected and ‘much of the Muslim world’
White House noted that Trump has been clear about his agenda – ‘if somebody has a problem…that does call into question whether or not they should continue’

State Department employees harboring anger about President Donald Trump’s travel ban are welcome to find a new place to work, the White House said Monday.

The 100 signatories of a dissent memo that’s circulating at State ‘should either get with the program or they can go,’ White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer declared.

‘At some point if they have a big problem with the policies that he’s instituting to keep the country safe, then that’s up to them to question whether or not they want to stay or not,’ Spicer told reporters during his daily briefing.

The cable, posted to web by the blog Lawfare, argues that Trump’s executive order barring the State Department from issuing visas to citizens of Sudan, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Libya will not achieve its stated purpose, to protect the country from terrorism.

It further points out that countries such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are not included in the order, even though citizens of those countries have committed acts of terrorism in the United States in the past.

The executive action will ‘immediately’ sour relations with the countries affected and ‘much of the Muslim world, which sees the ban as religiously motivated,’ the dissenters write.

‘It will increase anti-American sentiment,’ the draft memo argues, ‘hostility towards the United States will grow.’

The State Department has confirmed the existence of the dissent cable, snippets of which appeared today in the Wall Street Journal.

‘This is an important process that the acting secretary, and the department as a whole, respect and value,’ State Department spokesman Mark Toner said, according to the NYT. ‘It allows State employees to express divergent policy views candidly and privately to senior leadership.’

[…]’The president has a very clear vision. He’s been clear on it since the campaign. He’s been clear on it since taking office, that he’s going to put the safety of this country first,’ Spicer said during his briefing. ‘He’s going to implement things that are in the best interest of protecting this country prospectively, not reactively.’

He brought up polling showing that more Americans agree with the travel ban, that prohibits Syrians from coming the country indefinitely, than not and proclaimed that ‘the American people support what the president is doing.’

They are ‘pleased that this president is taking the steps necessary to protect this country,’ he said.

‘If somebody has a problem with that agenda, then they should ques – then that does call into question whether or not they should continue in that post or not,’ he said of State Department employees protesting the travel restrictions.

  31. Man Jailed 7 Years For Violent Outburst & Threatening To Blow Up Dairy Queen Over Bacon

WOW. What a fool. A dangerous fool who obviously does not know how to act in a civil society. Just a taste of what happens when the justice system goes too light on somebody. Well maybe after 7 years in jail cooling his heels he will be a little wiser. Why crap away 7 years of your life over a couple of strips of bacon on your burger at Dairy Queen?

  32. Seven Found Guilty of Robbing German Churches to Finance Jihad (breitbart, Jan 30, 2017)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/01/30/seven-found-guilty-robbing-german-churches-finance-jihad/

“A German court has found seven men guilty of burglarizing churches to financially support Islamic extremists fighting in Syria.

Cologne’s regional court sentenced the men to between three years and 6 months, and four years and 10 months in prison for the robberies.

Judges say that there’s sufficient proof the men – aged between 24 and 37 – broke into up to five churches and other buildings between 2013 and 2014.

In Monday’s ruling, judges said it was unclear whether the funds they generated were actually used to support armed jihad and if so, to what extent.

An eighth man was sentenced to two years and 7 months for serious bodily harm.

Five defendants are German citizens, two hold German and Tunisian citizenship, and one holds German and Moroccan citizenship.”

  33. Jeff Foxworthy was asked to tell the public what he thinks of President Obama. Let’s just say that Foxworthy didn’t hold back.
He posted the following response to his Facebook page:
    >If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for entering and remaining in the country illegally — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

    >If you have to get your parents’ permission to go on a field trip or to take an aspirin in school, but not to get an abortion — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

    >If you MUST show your identification to board an airplane, cash a check, buy liquor, or check out a library book and rent a video, but not to vote for who runs the government — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

    >If the government wants to prevent stable, law-abiding citizens from owning gun magazines that hold more than ten rounds, but gives twenty F-16 fighter jets to the crazy new leaders in Egypt — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

    >If, in the nation’s largest city, you can buy two 16-ounce sodas, but not one 24-ounce soda, because 24-ounces of a sugary drink might make you fat — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

    >If an 80-year-old woman who is confined to a wheelchair or a three-year-old girl can be strip-searched by the TSA at the airport, but a woman in a burka or a hijab is only subject to having her neck and head searched — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.
