    • Nigel Farage describes Barack Obama as a ‘loathsome creature’ – and warns Donald Trump not to touch Theresa May

Nigel Farage has described Barack Obama as a “creature” and joked about warning Donald Trump not to “touch” Theresa May.

The interim Ukip leader said the current US President was a “loathsome individual who couldn’t stand our country.”

Mr Farage also suggested he could act as a middle man between the next Republican President and the British Prime Minister, as he called on Mr Trump to try and “schmooze” her.

    • Wow. Someone needs to write an article about this poor woman´s persecution and send it to PI-News, Junge Freiheit or the AfD.

They want to arrest her for making a video named, “Make Germany Great Again” and already seized her bank account in Germany plus raiding her previously owned apartment. She said she wanted to originally name the video, “Make Germany White Again” to take advantage of her “Black” privilege to say such a thing. They want to take her into questioning, to determine whether or not she is a “security risk” and possibly revoke her residency permit.

Currently she is in the U.S., but had to meet with Lawyers because they are pursuing her for her “offensive video” on the other side of the ocean. Just Wow.

  1. Iran once again exceeds a nuclear deal limit -IAEA report

VIENNA, Nov 9 (Reuters) – Iran has exceeded a soft limit on sensitive material set under its nuclear deal with major powers, the U.N. atomic watchdog said on Wednesday, hours after Donald Trump – who has strongly criticized the agreement – won the U.S. presidential election.

It is the second time Tehran has surpassed the 130 metric tonne threshold for heavy water, a material used as a moderator in reactors like Iran’s unfinished one at Arak, since the deal was put in place in January. It had 130.1 tonnes of the material on Tuesday, the watchdog said.

The last time Iran overstepped that mark was brief, passing without major criticism from the other countries that signed the nuclear deal last year. But there are questions about whether the incoming Trump administration will react to such incidents the same way.

“On 2 November 2016, the director general expressed concerns related to Iran’s stock of heavy water to the vice president of Iran and president of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, … Ali Akbar Salehi,” the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a confidential report seen by Reuters.

  2. China state media warns Trump against isolationism, calls for status quo

BEIJING (Reuters) – Chinese state media has warned the U.S. president-elect against isolationism and interventionism, calling instead for the United States to actively work with China to maintain the international status quo.

President-elect Donald Trump threatened to tear up trade deals and pursue a more unilateral foreign policy under his “America First” principle during a tempestuous election campaign.

But China and other foreign governments are uncertain how much of Trump’s rhetoric will be translated into policy because he has at times made contradictory statements and provided few details of how he would deal with the world.

Trump often targeted China in the campaign, blaming Beijing for U.S. job losses and vowing to impose 45 percent tariffs on Chinese imports. The Republican also promised to call China a currency manipulator on his first day in office.

U.S. isolationist policies had “accelerated the country’s economic crisis” during the Great Depression, warned a commentary by China’s official Xinhua News Agency, though it added that “election talk is just election talk”.

  3. GoFundMe pages advocating for assassination of Donald Trump
By Joe Newby November 9, 2016

Question 1 is where is the Secret Service? Threatening the life of a president or president-elect is a federal crimes. Question 2 is why has GoFundMe taken these pages down?

The pages in question advocate for the assassination of President-elect Donald Trump. All told there are least nine such pages, some of them as profane as they are treasonous. Here’s the text of one that fits that description (all caps in the original, along with the word spacing and unredacted spelling of the F-bomb):

WE WANT HIM DEAD!HE IS GOING TO F*CK UP OUR COUNTRY AND WE WANT HIM GONE.HE HAS NO EXPERIENCE AND HE IS A WASTE OF SPERM.HE IS ANOTHER HITLER AND HE NEEDS TO DIE.LET’S JOIN HANDS AND MURDER HIM ASAP. Thank You ?

“Whoever kill him will get all the donations and get bonded out,” another page added.

Yet another said it was looking for $10 million for Mexicans to kill Trump:

In schools and kindergarten in German Neuss kids get no more pork. The bratwurst/sausage is no more made of pork, it is made of chicken. Sometimes children get meat balls but they are clearly marked as “pork”
“Neuss has adapted itself to the Muslim food culture. ” says the newspaper.

  5. The one scenario that could still get Hillary into the White House
For diehard Democrats holding out hope that they won’t have to live through a Donald Trump presidency, there is a last, incredibly long shot for them latch onto — a surprise twist in the Electoral College.

Though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 200,000, Trump has won the minimum of 270 electoral votes necessary to be elected president. As of late Wednesday, he had 290 to Clinton’s 228.

According to the Constitution, chosen electors of the Electoral College are the real people who will vote for president, when they meet on Dec. 19 in their respective state capitals.

However, there is nothing stopping any of the electors from refusing to support the candidate to whom they were bound or abstaining from voting.

There’s even a name for it: becoming a “faithless elector.”

Although the idea of the electors trying to reverse the vote is occasionally discussed — such as after the incredibly close 2000 election in which George W. Bush narrowly beat Al Gore — going “faithless” is exceedingly rare.

More than 99 percent of electors throughout American history have voted as pledged, according to an analysis by the New York Times…….

  6. cnbc -Saudi Prince Alwaleed: ‘No excuse’ for Republican Party not to deliver growth

Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a billionaire investor with holdings in several U.S. companies, was optimistic on the future of the United States after the surprise Donald Trump election victory, saying the president-elect would likely be different in office than as a candidate.

“There’s no excuse at all for the Republican Party, which is dominant in the United States, to not deliver this growth that is expected from them,” Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal said Thursday.

He spoke to CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” by telephone on Thursday, following Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton in the U.S. presidential election.

“One of the concerns that world leaders have against — I emphasize candidate Trump, not president Trump — is that they were not sure about his commitment to all of the international treaties that he had,” the Saudi billionaire said.

Despite past tensions, Alwaleed tweeted an olive branch to Trump on Wednesday morning.

President elect @realDonaldTrump whatever the past differences, America has spoken, congratulations & best wishes for your presidency.

That’s in sharp contrast to last year’s Twitter war, in which Alwaleed had called Trump a “disgrace” and urged the GOP candidate to quit the race.

Responding at the time, Trump had tweeted: “Dopey Prince” Alwaleed wants to control U.S. politicians with his father’s money. “Can’t do it when I get elected,” he continued.

On CNBC Thursday, the Saudi billionaire said, “I don’t regret” that December tweet.

Alwaleed is chairman of Kingdom Holding, whose top investments include Twitter, Time Warner, Citi, Apple and eBay, according to the firm’s website.

  7. More than 100 troops seeking transgender care

WASHINGTON — More than 100 transgender troops have informed the services that they want to transition to the opposite sex, be formally recognized in their new gender or are seeking counseling or medical treatment, according to documents and the military.

The troops are coming forward after the Pentagon’s new policy allowing the open service of transgender troops went into effect Oct. 1.

About 55 enlisted sailors and officers have informed their commanders they want to transition to the other gender, according to Lt. Cdr. Nate Christensen, a Navy spokesman. There are 48 airmen who are seeking transgender medical care or counseling, said Maj. William Lewis, an Air Force spokesman. In October, Army chief of staff Gen. Mark Milley told the Associated Press that 10 soldiers had formally sought to be recognized in their new gender.

Sailors were informed Monday about the transgender sailors and urged to abide by the new policy, according to an email from the Navy’s chief of personnel.

“Today, we know of approximately 55 sailors who have waited for this policy to be finalized, and desire a gender transition,” Vice Adm. Robert Burke wrote in an email to commanders obtained by USA TODAY. “With few exceptions, these sailors have had faith that the Navy would come through, and they observed all regulations and standards applicable to their birth gender.”

The exceptions he referred to are sailors who sought treatment before the policy was finalized, said a Navy official who spoke on condition of anonymity because officials were not authorized to speak publicly about details of those seeking treatment. Burke’s message accompanied the Navy’s new policy for transgender sailors.

“We would ask that your leaders assist our sailors in conforming to Navy regulations and uphold Navy standards of conduct as we navigate this change,” Burke wrote.

The Pentagon’s repeal of the ban on transgender troops was announced June 30 after months of internal debate. Some members of the military brass objected, fearing the change was happening too quickly. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, did not appear with Defense Secretary Ash Carter when the repeal was announced.

Transgender troops are estimated to make up a small fraction of the active-duty force of 1.3 million. A RAND Corp. study found there are as many as 6,630 transgender troops of whom dozens or a few hundred would seek hormone treatment or surgery. The cost of treating them was estimated at as much as $8.4 million per year. Individual treatment could cost as much as $50,000.

Transgender sailors must first prove to medical personnel that transition is medically necessary before treatment begins, according to guidance issued to commanders.

The Navy defined treatment that includes “real-life experience,” which could include wearing clothing of the opposite gender or hairstyle during off-duty hours, according to guidance issued to commanders.

Ultimately, treatment could also consist of hormone treatment and reassignment surgery.

“To remain the finest seagoing fighting force the world has ever known, the Navy needs people who are the right fit for the right job regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, creed, or gender identity,” Christensen said. “Our goal is to ensure that the mission is carried out by the best-qualified and the most capable service members. If an individual can meet the Navy’s standards, they should be afforded the opportunity to serve.”

    • BREITBART – White House: Obama ‘Hopeful’ Trump Will Not Prosecute Hillary Clinton for Political Revenge

The White House signals it is hopeful that President-elect Donald Trump will not prosecute Hillary Clinton, citing a tradition in America of not using the justice system to enact revenge on a political opponent.

“[W]e’ve got a long tradition in this country of people in power not using the criminal justice system to exact political revenge,” spokesman Josh Earnest says. “In fact, we go to great lengths to insulate our criminal justice system from partisan politics.”

When Obama took office, many leftists wanted to see George W. Bush and Dick Cheney prosecuted for what they called “war crimes,” because of the use of enhanced interrogation techniques to question terrorists. But President Obama appeared reluctant to prosecute career law and intelligence officials in the Bush administration, citing in 2009 “a belief that we need to look forward as opposed to looking backwards.”

During a press conference, Earnest was reluctant to discuss potential pardons, insisting that it was improper to discuss them in advance. He did not rule out a potential pardon for Clinton but reminded reporters of Obama’s discussion of pardons in August.

When asked to reflect on his decision to commute the sentences of thousands of drug offenders, Obama indicated that he would not issue last-minute political pardons before leaving office. Any presidential pardons, he explained, would go through a rigorous legal process to avoid looking political.

“It’s going to be reviewed by the pardon attorney, it will be reviewed by my White House counsel, and I’m going to, as best as I can, make these decisions based on the merits, as opposed to political considerations,” Obama said during a press conference.

Earnest reasserted that Obama still felt the same way.

“I wouldn’t speculate at this point about what impact that may have on hypothetical pardon requests that he receives,” he said. “I’ll just say that the guidance that President Obama shared with you is still operative.”

But that doesn’t preclude a decision by Obama to protect Clinton from further investigations. If the president views any prosecution of Clinton as politically motivated, he might step in to minimize the damage that she faces. But a political pardon risks tainting Obama’s presidential legacy, something that Bush also avoided.

When Dick Cheney demanded a pardon for his aide Scooter Libby, Bush refused, but commuted his sentence, keeping Cheney’s aide out of jail. Libby still had to pay a $250,000 fine and serve probation for two years.

Cheney vigorously pursued the case, accusing Bush of leaving a wounded soldier on the battlefield.

“It was a hard decision to make,” Bush said in 2010 about the case. “But that’s what you do when you’re president: You make hard decisions.”

  10. Muslims in Italy: ‘Give Us Back Our Mosques or We Will Pray to Allah in the Vatican’

Despite a major Muslim protest at the Colosseum against the closure of illegal mosques, Rome police have continued shutting down so-called “garage mosques,” and now Muslims are threatening to invade Saint Peter’s Basilica to pray there.

This week, authorities closed down another makeshift mosque in Rome for failure to meet building norms and for non-compliance with safety standards, the sixth such mosque-closing in the last months.

In response, Muslims in Rome have threatened to invade the Vatican to pray in Saint Peter’s Basilica, which Italian media are calling Islamic “blackmail.”

“As many as 300 people can pray here; where will we go if it’s closed?”, said a young Muslim man identified only as “Hussein,” who works in a hardware store not from one of the “Islamic centers” that police have closed.

This center is located in the eastern suburbs, a district where half of the inhabitants are Muslims and the heart of the Islamic protest against the closure of Islamic places of worship.

“We live here, we work here, we cannot go to pray in Parioli [the other side of town],” says Anwar, the president of a neighborhood prayer hall.

“The problem must be solved at the social and political level,” said Bachcu, the organizer of the Coliseum protest. “Continuing with the closings will not solve anything. A prayer room cannot be closed due to a problem in urban planning. Prayer is our fundamental right and if they insist on shutting down the mosques, we will pray in the streets,” he said.

A number in Rome’s Muslim community have suggested staging a more provocative protest in the form of a “flash mob.”

“They wanted to go and pray ‘Allahu Akbar’ throughout the city, all the way to the Vatican,” said Bachcu. “In the end we managed to stop them, but if they start these initiatives, what do we do?”

Last month, thousands of Muslims gathered outside the Roman Colosseum to protest the closures of a number of “garage mosques,” purportedly to avoid young people becoming radicalized.

During the demonstration, an imam led the group in chanting “Allahu Akbar,” as they prostrated themselves on the ground.

The Muslim leaders said that another peaceful protest has been organized for Friday, November 11. In the Prati area of Rome, hundreds of Roman Muslims are expected to attend a street march and to all pray together “facing Mecca.”

  11. Russia Claims Contact With Trump Team During Campaign
Trump spokeswoman denies assertion by Russia’s deputy foreign minister

MOSCOW—Russia was in contact with the team of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump during his campaign and this work will continue, the country’s deputy foreign minister said Thursday, according to Interfax news agency.

“There was communication,” Sergei Ryabkov told Interfax. “Naturally, we are continuing this work even after the elections.” Mr. Ryabkov provided no specifics about which Russian officials may have had contact with the Trump team, and in what capacity.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks denied Mr. Ryabkov’s assertions. “Absolutely not,” she said when asked if his comments were accurate.

Throughout the presidential campaign, Mr. Trump faced accusations from his democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, of being cozy with the Kremlin. Mr. Trump has praised President Vladimir Putin, but has said he never met the Russian leader.

Mr. Putin welcomed Mr. Trump’s victory, saying he hoped U.S.-Russian relations would warm and that the two countries would work together on global security and international issues.

While some Russian officials have openly celebrated Mr. Trump’s win, Mr. Ryabkov played down potential for an about-face in Russian-U.S. elections. “We wouldn’t like our public… to have the impression that we are overwhelmed with rosy anticipations,” he said.

    http://www.wsj.com/articles/interfax-reports-russia-had-contact-with-trump-team-during-campaign-1478791392?mod=e2tw

So now we know WHO the Russian elites supported. It was NOT Trump. The present Russian claim has the aim of weakening Trump and of confusing some people.

    • Among Israelis I’ve read good arguments for both sides.
=> Political and military debate is just something Israelis do; it’s a national pastime. Look what Moses had to put up with, walking circles in the desert with former slaves opining for 40 years.

But I find the case for Putin wanting H elected the most delicious. He’s been running rings around 0, he could spin pirouettes around the Clinton Machine. Maybe get her corrupt lackeys to sabotage each other, then take down the phony cronies one by one.

If he’s more worried about the Motherland than reflex one-upmanship, he might be semi-sincere in welcoming Trump. Co-Belligerent, say, not ally. I just don’t think he’s that hard up.

      Who knows?

      • Well, there is an argument for both sides, but in any case Putin will want to make sure that USA weak, but not too weak. Too weak is also bad for Russia.
On the other hand same reasoning is true for USA, Russia should not be too strong, but also not too weak.
As for Putin running rings around 0, that depends what 0 really believes in. Also Putin had some luck, for example with Merkel inviting migrants to EU or with European/US elites being so contemptuous of working/middle class people.

        • As for Putin running rings around 0, that depends what 0 really believes in.
          Very astute.
I figure Merkel and 0 are players for the same team.

          • Maybe but if so why would they broadcast that fact to the world? To make Trump weaker and keep the US weaker? That wouldn’t make sense, if he has the inside track with Trump he would do all he could to keep that quiet.

Did Putin run rings around Obama, from what I have seen he did. Obama wanted Assad out of power and the Sunni in power in Iraq, Syria and probably Jordan and Lebanon. He acheived none of those goals.

  12. Britain Quietly Deploys Warship off the Coast of Yemen

Britain has secretly deployed its most advanced warship off the coast of Yemen to guard a crucial shipping lane from Iranian-backed missile attacks threat, according to The Times.

The warship has been sent to protect the Bab al-Mandeb route following attacks on three U.S. warships and a United Arab Emirates vessel there.

The vast majority of Britain’s oil and gas supplies take this route as their main passage which leads to the Suez Canal; any obstacle would mean the electricity could be cut off across Britain, said Peter Roberts, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, who stressed the importance of keeping the strait open.

The threat of attacks against vessels using the shipping lane is an expansion from the conflict in Yemen where Iran-backed Houthi rebels are attacking Yemeni government forces; supported by a Saudi-led coalition and armed with British weapons.

A suspected Houthi missile strike destroyed the UAE vessel that was providing support to the coalition at the start of last month in an attack that was filmed and posted on YouTube. There were three subsequent suspected Houthi missile launches over the next fortnight against the warships USS Mason, USS Nitze and USS Ponce; none hit their targets.

“This is about Iranians and their proxy war against the Saudis,” said Gerry Northwood, chief operating officer of MAST, a British maritime security firm.

Britain has abstained from announcing the deployment of Daring off Yemen because of the sensitivity of such a powerful UK warship appearing to be linked to the conflict, stated The Times.

“The destroyer, which can shoot down missiles, had been heading to the Gulf with HMS Ocean, the UK’s flagship which is due to take charge of coalition naval operations against ISIS later this month.”

    http://english.aawsat.com/2016/11/article55361835/britain-quietly-deploys-warship-off-coast-yemen

RT – Oil wars? UK’s most advanced warship secretly deployed to Yemen coast

Britain’s most advanced warship has reportedly been quietly deployed to the coast of Yemen in what experts claim is a bid to protect the vital Bab al-Mandeb strait – a key oil route.

While the move has not yet been publicly confirmed, the Times newspaper reported Type 45 destroyer HMS Daring had been diverted to the area, which feeds into the Suez Canal.

It has been claimed recently that three US warships and a UAE vessel were targeted – without any effect – from the Yemeni coastline.

The attacks are thought to have been carried out by Houthi rebels using Iranian-sourced missiles.

Western economies fear they could be crippled if the strait is dominated by rebel groups blocking the flow of commercial shipping.

“As part of our commitment to freedom of navigation in the region, HMS Daring is providing situational awareness and reassurance to commercial shipping,” a Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman told the Times.

There have been repeated calls for the UK to stop arming Saudi Arabia. However, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson argued in October that if Britain did not sell arms to Saudi Arabia, other countries “would happily” take over the market.

Johnson insisted the government is closely monitoring the situation in Yemen, where Saudi forces have been accused of war crimes over the course of their 19-month military intervention.

He said boycotting the sale of arms to Riyadh would harm British interests in the region and diminish its diplomatic and political influence.

According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)’s estimates from October 10, at least 4,125 civilians have been killed in Yemen and more than 7,207 injured since the start of the bombing campaign. Most civilian fatalities were caused by the Saudi-led coalition airstrikes.

A so-called humanitarian migrant reception centre opened near Paris’ Porte de la Chapelle on Thursday, after a two-month long construction process. The centre, which is run by the humanitarian organisation Emmaus Solidarite, has an initial capacity of 400 people.

The newly opened refugee camp will reportedly act as a reception centre for newly arrived travellers, who will be allowed to stay for a maximum of 10 days before being relocated elsewhere.

  14. Germany: Grand Coalition agrees on increased CCTV and partial burqa ban

Germany’s grand coalition has agreed upon certain safety measures proposed by Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, at the Reichstag, in Berlin, on Thursday, to boost the country’s interior security in Berlin.

Following a meeting with coalition partners De Maiziere announced, “In my field of work [interior security] there is a consensus about bolstering video surveillance in public areas through a broadening of the privacy law, which will contribute to better solutions and a prevention of criminal actions. We agreed that the Federal Police will be allowed to use license plate scanners enabling us to tackle transgressive crime more effectively.”

  16. Erdogan: Turkey’s Influence Surpasses Territorial Borders

The people of Syria, Iraq, the Balkans and Crimea live beyond Turkish geographical borders, but they remain important for Turkey at the spiritual level, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

ANKARA (Sputnik) – Turkey has no territorial claims to any country, but its influence goes beyond the geographical borders, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday at a meeting, devoted to the death anniversary of the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

“We are not locked in the confined space inside our borders. Geographical borders are one thing, but spiritual [borders] are another thing … We do not claim other countries’ territories, but the developments there directly affect Turkey,” Erdogan said, adding that Ataturk repeatedly expressed the same idea in his speeches.

Make a decision! Turkey orders EU to decide on membership after scathing Brussels report

TURKEY’S President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the European Union (EU) to reach a decision on the country’s 50-year application to become a member of the beleaguered bloc.

His demands come as Brussels slated Turkey in nearly every area in a damning report of its relationship with the EU.

The European Commission has criticised Ankara over freedom of expression and human rights in a report on Turkey’s progress towards EU membership.

Mr Erdogan said: “Get a move on and review it straight away.

“But don’t just review it, make a final decision.”

Mr Erdogan claimed the EU was being slow with the decision because there are three million migrants in Turkey.

Turkey has been trying to join the bloc for more than half a century, but Erdogan’s comments came after the EU accused Turkey of “backsliding”.

He said: “If they open the gates, where will we put these three million refugees? That is why they can’t bring this to a conclusion.”

Turkey is frustrated at the EU’s failure to keep to their promise for visa-free travel to Europe for Turkish citizens and accelerated EU membership talks.

Turkey also believed that the EU did not condemn the military coup in July.

The European Commission’s report warned that Turkey had not made strides on several social policies, including freedom of expression and prison conditions.

Turkish EU Affairs Minister Ömer Çelik hit back at the report and said: “There are sections in the report that are very far from being objective. We are faced here with a report that is far from being constructive and offering a way forwards.

  19. REVEALED: Migrant numbers in Italy exceed 5 MILLION costing state billions (express, Nov 10, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/731059/Migrant-numbers-in-Italy-exceed-5-million-costing-billions

“THE number of migrants living in Italy has exceeded five million, costing the country more than two billion euros, official figures have revealed.

Asylum applications looks set to surpass the figure of 84,000 made last year.

More than 60,000 requests were made up to July this year, the second highest of any country within the European Union, only Germany has received more.

The figures were revealed by Giorgio Alleva, the president of ISTAT (The National Institute for Statistics) which supplies official figures and data for the government, during a hearing of the Parliamentary Commission.

Alluvia said: “The real novelty of recent years is the growing number of young immigrants and second-generation immigrants who become Italian.

“Those who obtain citizenship from their parents and those who were born in our country and at the age of eighteen choose to have Italian citizenship, increased from about 10,000 in 2011 to over 66,000 in 2015.”

On January, 1 2016 the number of official ‘foreigners’ in the southern European country stood at 5,026,153, according to ISTAT, a rise of 12,000 compared to 2014.

The figure represents 8.3 percent of Italy’s total population which compares to France’s 6.6 percent and Germany with 9.3 percent.

Of those five million people, four million – 70 percent – come from outside the EU but have a regular residence permit.

According to Alleva, the number of foreigners living in the country increased by five times since 1998, which is the largest growth of any country in Europe.

The cost to the Italian nation was put at 2.093 billion euros, according to the President of the Commission Federico Gelli.

Alluvia also reported most of the legal migrants tended to live in the centre-north of the country, which offered better job opportunities.

Only 11 percent of migrants lived in the south whilst just five percent were scattered across the various Italian islands.

The gender balance of the migrants was fairly even with women only just in the majority on 51.4 percent.”

“The United States should not provide a safe haven for the U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, who the Turkish government accuses of orchestrating the failed July 15 coup attempt, a top adviser to President-elect Donald Trump has said.

“The forces of radical Islam derive their ideology from radical clerics like Gülen, who is running a scam. We should not provide him safe haven,” retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn wrote for the Hill newspaper in a piece published on Nov. 8.

“In this crisis, it is imperative that we remember who our real friends are,” added Flynn, who is the former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Flynn was a key national security adviser to Trump during his presidential campaign and is expected by many to be appointed to a cabinet position.

“We must begin with understanding that Turkey is vital to U.S. interests. Turkey is really our strongest ally against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria [ISIS], as well as a source of stability in the region. It provides badly needed cooperation with U.S. military operations,” he added.

Ankara accuses Gülen and his followers of organizing Turkey’s deadly coup attempt of July 15, during which parliament was bombed and soldiers attempted to assassinate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an. More than 240 civilians died during the failed attempt after Erdo?an called on citizens to take to the streets to counter the attempt.”

“Austrian prosecutors have charged a member of a Syrian rebel group with 20 counts of murder for allegedly executing wounded government soldiers in his home country.

The 27-year-old man was arrested in a refugee shelter in western Austria in June after being denounced by a fellow Syrian.

At first he admitted to the 2013-2014 killings in Homs and the surrounding region but later retracted his confession, a spokesman for public prosecutors in the Austrian city of Innsbruck told AFP.

The suspect, a member of a unit of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), faces life in prison if convicted. He will go on trial early next year.

The prosecutors were able to bring charges against the man under an international counterterrorism agreement, which is intended to prevent political murders from remaining unpunished if a criminal flees abroad.”

“Riyadh: A billionaire Saudi prince has congratulated US president-elect Donald Trump after previously calling him a disgrace who should have pulled out of the race.

“President elect @realDonaldTrump whatever the past differences, America has spoken, congratulations & best wishes for your presidency,” Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal said on his official Twitter account, after US election results on Wednesday confirmed Trump’s unexpected victory over Hillary Clinton.

Al Waleed is an unusually outspoken member of the Saudi royal family who chairs Kingdom Holding Co. The diversified firm’s interests include US-based giants Citigroup and Time Warner.

Late last year Al Waleed took exception to what his office called Trump’s “anti-Islam statement”, a proposal that all Muslims should be temporarily barred from entering the United States.

“You are a disgrace not only to the GOP but to all America,” Al Waleed tweeted to Trump, referring to the Republican Party.

“Withdraw from the US presidential race as you will never win.”

Trump hit back, also on Twitter.

“Dopey Prince Al Waleed Talal wants to control our US politicians with daddy’s money. Can’t do it when I get elected,” he wrote at the time.

Trump later modified his stance on Muslims to urge an immigration ban from countries with “a proven history of terrorism” and for “extreme vetting” of immigrants.”

  27. Japan Shuts Down Its Monetary Lab (bloomberg, Nov 10, 2016)
    https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-11-10/japan-shuts-down-its-monetary-lab

“Japan’s great monetary policy experiment is drawing to a close, and the results may change the way the world thinks about central banking. The Bank of Japan’s recent quarterly report says, in effect, that the central bank has done all it can do to raise growth and inflation, and that fiscal policy needs to step in and help. The BOJ admitted that monetary policy alone won’t be enough to hit its 2 percent inflation target, now or ever.

This is very troubling for monetarists (as those who think that monetary policy is the key to macroeconomic stabilization are sometimes called). If central banks can’t control the rate of inflation, what hope do they have of affecting the economy?

And the BOJ had gone further than any other major central bank. Its quantitative easing program was bigger, and included large purchases of stocks in addition to bonds. It was more aggressive in its rhetoric, with Governor Haruhiko Kuroda repeatedly declaring that he would do “whatever it takes” to hit the inflation target. If any central bank was going to fulfill the dreams of monetarists, it was Kuroda’s BOJ.

For a while, it seemed to be working. Deflation ended and prices increased, with core inflation briefly rising to more than 3 percent in 2014. But the honeymoon was short-lived — despite continued strong rhetoric and enormous purchases of stocks, the inflation rate fell back to zero in 2015, and deflation resumed this year.

Why did Japan’s bold experiment fail? One possibility is the impact of the dreaded zero lower bound (or ZLB, as it’s known). Nominal interest rates can’t go far below zero, because cash itself has a nominal interest rate of zero, so if the central bank tries to push rates down too far, people will just hold cash. Some economists, like the University of Colorado-Boulder’s Miles Kimball, have suggested taxing paper cash in order to allow rates to go very far into negative territory, but this has proven to be a non-starter politically.

The ZLB doesn’t just stop rates from going negative. It also affects people’s expectations for the future. Everyone knows that if another deflationary recession comes along, the ZLB will prevent the central bank from cutting rates in order to fight it. Everyone thus expects more deflation in the future, and cuts their prices today.

Monetarists had hoped that if the central bank promised to keep rates low for a very long time, and to engage in lots of quantitative easing, that would counteract these negative expectations. But even if that’s true in theory — and let’s be honest, no one has a good theory of central bank communication — it turned out not to be true in practice.

People know that the central bank can break its promises at any time. Even if the legislature implements a rule that constrains the bank’s actions, that rule can be amended at any time. The bank might change its mind about the effect of monetary policy, or the desirability of hitting 2 percent inflation. It might get scared of political fallout. Or the people in charge of the central bank might simply be replaced with new, more hawkish leaders.

Since the central bank can’t make believable long-term promises, the effects of forward guidance and bold rhetoric are limited in reality, even if they could work in an ideal world.

As for quantitative easing, it has run into its own practical hurdles. The BOJ bought so much stock that by the end of 2017, Bloomberg estimates that the central bank will be the biggest shareholder in 55 of the 225 companies in the Nikkei index. The BOJ now owns more that half of the ETF shares in the whole country:…

That’s unsustainable. Eventually, it starts to affect corporate governance in ways that are well outside the scope of any macroeconomic model. And since companies and consumers knew that the buying binge was temporary, that probably limited its effectiveness.

So we’re seeing that even if inflationary monetary policy works fine in theory — which is very far from certain — reality just doesn’t work the way the models assume. Academic macroeconomists have largely ignored the real institutions and political constraints that govern how monetary policy works in the real world, and so they dramatically overestimated what central banks can do.

If Japan is out of the monetary easing game, other countries will doubtless follow. The era of bold monetary policy experimentation that began with the global financial crisis is now drawing to a close. More and more, economic policy makers will look to fiscal initiatives and to deeper structural reforms to boost growth and stop deflation.”
