“Situation of ”anarchy” in Tripoli after the failed coup last Friday against Fayez al Sarraj by ex-premier Khalifa Ghwell of the then-Islamist cabinet. According to the website of the Libya Herald, yesterday clashes were reported in the city and violence also affected a refugee camp in the area of Fallah near the road to the airport, with a toll of at least one woman killed and six other people, including a child, wounded. The hotel Rixos – which was stormed Friday night by Islamist militias led by Ghwell – are allegedly surrounded by heavily armed units faithful to the ex-premier.

UN envoy for Libya Martin Kobler tweeted that he was saddened by reports of civilian victims, including children, in Tripoli and Benina, saying his thoughts and prayers went to the families of victims and that only unity will save Libya.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that last night the presidential guard of the national unity government of Sarraj, supported by the UN, announced it is supporting the only legitimate and constitutional government, that of ex-premier Ghwell, added the website Libyan Express.”

“ROME – Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano on Monday said the EU has been extremely unreliable and has taken Italy “for a ride on migrants by failing to respect” resettlement agreements.

The EU has agreed to redistribute by 2017 some 160,000 asylum seekers, mostly from Italy and Greece, which are the first countries of entry for the majority of migrants and refugees crossing the Mediterranean.”

“First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama invited 22 Moroccan girls and 22 Liberian girls to the White House for the premiere of the CNN documentary We Will Rise on October 11, the International Day of the Girl. I was one of the Moroccan girls invited to Washington D.C. as part of First Lady Obama’s “Let Girls Learn” initiative.

The White House visit was a follow-up to First Lady Obama’s visit to Liberia and Morocco in June 2016, during which we Moroccan girls participated in a roundtable discussion on the challenges young girls face in order to continue our schooling. Meryl Streep, Freida Pinto and CNN correspondent Isha Sesay also participated in the discussion. We Will Rise features these important conversations.

The First Lady welcomed us warmly into her home, where we also met many important people from various government and nonprofit organizations—including the Peace Corps, the U.S. State Department, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Girl Rising, and many others who are working with First Lady Obama to launch “Let Girls Learn.”…”

  5. Indian Muslims unite to decry ‘interference’ in family law (gulfnews, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://gulfnews.com/news/asia/india/indian-muslims-unite-to-decry-interference-in-family-law-1.1914209

“Mumbai: In a rare display of solidarity, Islamic scholars and clerics of all Muslim communities on Monday attacked the government for trying to introduce a Uniform Civil Code.

The scholars and clerics from the Sunni, Shia, Barelvi, Deobandi and Ahlehadi communities registered their protest against what they termed was “the government’s interference in personal laws”.
In a joint statement issued after a brainstorming session, the leaders took umbrage to the Centre’s proposals on Triple Talaq and other practices which they said would violate their personal laws.

“Any interference in Muslim Personal Law will not be tolerated. Any efforts to impose a Uniform Civil Code in the name of social reform and gender justice will prove counterproductive,” they said.

The President of All India Ulema Council, Maulana Zaherudin Khan, condemned the move of banning Triple Talaq as a conspiracy to impose a Uniform Civil Code which he said was opposed by most Muslims.

“We will boycott this questionnaire. No Muslim will respond to it because it is misleading and deceitful. The Uniform Civil Code is divisive and will lead to social unrest,” he cautioned.

“The government should respect this position of the Muslims instead of conspiring to forcibly put an end to it,” said Darul Uloom Mohamadiya’s President Maulana Sayed M.K. Ashraf.

“It cannot force Muslims to follow other communities in issues related to personal laws as it tantamount to an infringement on their fundamental rights,” Ashraf said.

He said that Muslims clamouring against Triple Talaq and demanding a ban on polygamy “are a minuscule minority who do not represent the sentiments of the majority of Indian Muslims”.

All Indian Ulema Association President Maulana Sayed Athar Ali urged the government to refrain from interfering in the beliefs and religions of all citizens.

“Muslims consider divorce, polygamy and other personal laws as an intrinsic part of their religion and are obliged to follow the Sharia in these matters,” Maulana Ali pointed out.

The latest move comes shortly after the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) came out strongly against Triple Talaq.

The meeting in Mumbai was chaired by Maulana Ashraf and attended by AIUC President Maulana Khan; Mushwarat President Naveed Hamid; AIMPLB executive committee member Maulana Sayed Athar Ali; All India Jamiat Islami Vice-President Maulana Nusrat; Imam of Haji Ali Dargah, Mumbai, Maulana Mohammed Islam; Shia scholar Maulana Asgar Haideri and Ahlehadis scholar Maulana Asgar Imam Salfi.”

  6. Young Muslims at risk of radicalisation in Vienna (thelocal, Oct 17, 2016)
    https://www.thelocal.at/20161017/young-muslims-at-risk-of-radicalisation-in-vienna

“A study by the City of Vienna shows that a high proportion of Muslim teenagers in the Austrian capital are at risk of being radicalised.

The study found that 85 percent of young people who are in contact with a youth worker have an immigration background, and that 27 percent of those teenagers who are Muslim show strong sympathy for jihadism, and violent and anti-Western thinking.

The government in Vienna says that it wants to identify this group of “latently vulnerable” youth and establish a dialogue with them, before they become radicalised.

The author of the study, Kenan Güngör, spoke to young people who are involved in youth work, either in centres, parks, or on the streets, and identified three groups of teens – “vulnerable”, “ambivalent”, and “moderates”. Out of 401 respondents, 214 were Muslims aged between 14 and 24-years-old. Asked if the Islamic world should defend itself by force against the West, 34 percent said that they agreed with this statement. 29 percent said they thought positively of people who were prepared to go to war for their religion.

According to Güngör’s study, 27 percent of the Muslim respondents belong to the “vulnerable” group. 31 percent are “ambivalent” – although they showed sympathy for religious extremists, they said they would refuse to kill in the name of God. A large proportion, 42 percent of Muslim youth, are “moderate” – with a liberal outlook and a rejection of violence they have little risk of being radicalised.

    ‘Too late’ for some

Factors deemed to increase the risk of radicalisation are how religious a teenager is, whether they have a homogenous rather than a mixed group of friends, their own experience of being a migrant, and their sex. “Radicalisation is a male problem,” Güngör says. He added that a “small and dangerous group” of youths are already radicalised and that it’s too late to try and reach them via youth and social workers.

Many young people with an immigration background begin a “search for their identity”, according to Vienna’s integration councillor Sandra Frauenberger (SPÖ). The study was commissioned by her department last year, and the interviews were carried out during the height of the refugee crisis.

65 percent of respondents said that they felt strongly connected to Vienna and their own neighbourhood, but many said they did not feel recognised as Austrians. Their parents’ country of origin was also important to them, with family and traditions playing an important role in their identity. Muslim youths tended to be more religious than young people from other religious backgrounds.

Racism and homophobia were also identified as problems. 54 percent of respondents had a negative attitude to other ethnic groups and 46 percent were strongly opposed to homosexuality. 47 percent of Muslim youths were anti-Semitic.

However, study author Güngör said that the results should not be used to draw conclusions about youth in Vienna in general, as most of the respondents belonged to socially disadvantaged groups.

The opposition ÖVP and FPÖ parties said the results of the study were down to the Red-Green Vienna government’s “refusal to acknowledge reality”. The head of the Vienna ÖVP Gernot Blümel demanded a new integration law and called for “necessary measures against radicalisation such as a ban on the full veil and distributing the Koran”. He also wants to see a focus on values in schools.

Maximilian Krauss, educational and integration spokesman for the right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ), says the Red-Green government’s integration efforts have “finally failed”. “Instead of integrating at least the second generation at some point, we are approaching a new generation of fanatical jihadists who neither accept nor respect us and our culture,” he said. In the past, he has called for a headscarf ban in schools, and compulsory German school-entrance tests.”

The Camp of the Saints (Le Camp des Saints) is a 1973 French novel by Jean Raspail. The novel depicts a setting wherein Third World mass immigration to France and the West leads to the destruction of Western civilization. Almost forty years after publication the book returned to the bestseller list in 2011.[1] The title is a reference to the Book of Revelation (20:9+KJV Rev 20:9 KJV).

    Here are the quotes:

“Oh you think so,monsieur?” the colonel objected. “I can see you ‘ve never done much fighting. In war the real enemy is always behind the lines. Never in fronot of you, never amoug you. Always at your back. That’s something every soldier knows. In every army , since the world began.”

“And plenty of times they’ve been tempted to trun their backs on the enemy — the so called enemy—and give it to the real one, once and for all…..No, my friend, in war the real enemy is seldom who you think.”

  8. State investigating allegations of voter fraud in Tarrant

    http://www.star-telegram.com/news/politics-government/election/article108539187.html

Less than a month before the Nov. 8 election, allegations of voter fraud in Tarrant County are under investigation by the state, prompting concern that the timing may intimidate some voters — and possibly lay groundwork for the Legislature to enact more restrictions on voting next year.

The complaints focus on mail-in ballots, which allow people to vote from their homes without any ID or verification of identity.

Supporters have long said mail-in balloting is crucial for overseas residents, the military and senior citizens. Critics maintain that such voting is ripe for abuse and raises concerns about “vote harvesting,” in which people could fill out and return other people’s ballots.

Some say the investigation is politically motivated; others say it’s addressing a practice that has been a problem for years.
