  1. Turkey slams Germany’s Spiegel over ‘provocative’ edition (hurriyetdailynews, Sep 14, 2016)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-slams-germanys-spiegel-over-provocative-edition-.aspx?pageID=238&nID=103896&NewsCatID=338

“Turkey on Sept. 14 angrily criticized leading German news magazine Der Spiegel for a special edition that called President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an “a dictator,” saying the edition was provocative and showed a “distorted mindset.”

The foreign ministry said in a statement that the issue — a special edition of the weekly devoted entirely to Turkey — was particularly offensive to Muslims coming during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.

The edition is a “new manifestation of the distorted and prejudiced mindset” targeting the predominantly Muslim country, it said, saying that the cover was “especially provocative”.

“A country loses its freedom,” the special issue of the German magazine, published Sept. 13, said on its cover, describing Erdo?an as a “dictator”.

The cover showed a granite-faced Erdo?an wearing sunglasses as well as two minarets from an Istanbul mosque transformed into rockets and lifting off for an attack.

In a statement, Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgiç said the cover, published during Eid, sought to create “a negative image not only about Turkey but also Islam.”

The ministry described the magazine’s publishing policy as “far from being responsible,” saying that it was “the clear and latest example of an anti-Turkey approach.”

“We regretfully condemn the attempts… to smear Mr President,” it added, calling for an end to “pointless and ill-intentioned” efforts to blacken Turkey’s image.

Introducing the special edition, Der Spiegel said: “What is going on in Turkey? There is hardly a day without bad news… President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an is changing from a reformer into a despot.”

Der Spiegel has a long history of run-ins with the Turkish authorities and earlier this year withdrew its correspondent to Istanbul after he failed to receive his annual accreditation.”

  2. Turkey’s interior minister vows ‘relentless’ operations against PKK (hurriyetdailynews, Sep 14, 2016)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkeys-interior-minister-vows-relentless-operations-against-pkk.aspx?pageID=238&nID=103893&NewsCatID=338

“Nearly 200 militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have been killed in ongoing security operations in the Çukurca district of the southeastern province of Hakkari, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) has announced, as recently appointed Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu vowed that Ankara would be “relentless” against terrorism.

“We will have no tolerance for terrorism. We are going to make all of our technical and intelligence equipment ready on the ground. I want to repeat: We will be relentless,” Soylu told reporters on Sept. 14, saying “meticulous” efforts against terror are ongoing.

“We have a lot to do to prevent acts by the terrorist organization and to increase peace and calm. A massive struggle has been waged up to now. Our basic principal is to continue the struggle with the same determination and understanding,” he added.

Saying the government needs support from residents in Turkey’s east and southeast, as well as the security forces, Soylu vowed that “Turkey will be successful against terror.”

Meanwhile, the TSK has announced that over 190 PKK militants have been killed in ongoing clashes between the security forces and the PKK militants in Hakkari’s Çukurca district.

Seven militants were killed on Sept. 14 in the Çilekli Tepe region, bringing the total number of militants killed in Çukurca to 195.

Also in Hakkari, Turkish warplanes conducted airstrikes against the PKK targets, killing two militants and destroying an ammunition store belonging to the outlawed group.

The jets struck PKK targets in rural Hakkari between 8:26 p.m. and 9:04 p.m. on Sept. 13, according to the Turkish General Staff.

Elsewhere, weapons, ammunition and explosives were seized in an operation against the PKK in the Tatvan district of the southeastern province of Batvan on Sept. 13.

Rocket launchers, rifles, hand grenades, ammunition, walkie-talkies and organizational documents were among the objects confiscated in the operation, according to a statement released by the Bitlis Governor’s Office.

Separately, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu commented on the Sept. 12 PKK car bomb attack in the eastern province of Van that wounded 53 people, saying the outlawed group aims to make the Kurdish people “Marxist and atheist.”

“Their [PKK militants] basic target is the faith of our Muslim, faithful, conservative Kurdish siblings. They are trying to make them Marxists and atheists. They are oppressing those [who they cannot change],” Çavu?o?lu said.”

  3. Turkey, US-led forces hit more ISIL targets (hurriyetdailynews, Sep 14, 2016)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-us-led-forces-hit-more-isil-targets.aspx?pageID=238&nID=103882&NewsCatID=352

“Turkey and U.S.-led coalition forces have intensified their joint military campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria and Iraq.

Some 13 Turkish “F?rt?na” (Storm) howitzers shelled six ISIL targets on Sept. 13 in the Wuguf area of northern Syria as part of the Euphrates Shied Operation, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) said in a statement on Sept. 14.

With the latest shelling, the total number of shellings since the beginning of the operation rose to 2,245 against 524 targets.

The operation, which was launched in cooperation with the U.S.-led coalition on Aug. 24, saw the Turkish military back the Free Syrian Army (FSA) with artillery, tanks, air power and Special Forces in a bid to sweep ISIL and other terrorist elements from its borders after a series of attacks targeting the country. Aircrafts from the anti-ISIL coalition also backed the operation.

On the same day, U.S.-led coalition forces pounded ISIL targets between al-Rai and Azaz in five airstrikes killing six militants…”

  4. `Germany: ‘Merkel must go’ protesters rally at CDU event in Berlin

Several dozen protesters chanted “Merkel must go” as German Chancellor Angela Merkel rallied her supporters in Berlin’s Stieglitz-Zehlendorf, on Wednesday. The event was organised to endorse local CDU candidate and current Senator of the Interior for Berlin Frank Henkel, ahead of the Berlin state elections, on Sunday.

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “Here in Steglitz-Zehlendorf you can notice how long-term policy pays off. Today there are people from all sides of the political spectrum who believe that when you provoke, when you have provocative slogans, short mantras, problems will be solved on their own. This is not the case and that is why we need a strong political centre in Berlin, and that is what the Christian Democratic Union stands for in the capital of Berlin, ladies and gentlemen.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “We want to sustainably reduce the amount of refugees coming to us. We want to stop the illegal people smugglers, we want to avoid that people lose their lives in the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea, and most of all we want to fight against the reasons for fleeing directly on the ground; and, for this, to make sure that the refugees find a good existence by near their country of origin. And that’s where the international community has made an error.”

  5. the sun – APOCALYPSE COW Graphic photos shows dozens of cows beheaded in mass sacrifice at Indonesian mosque for Muslim holiday of Eid

Muslims traditionally kill animals such as cows, sheep and goats as part of Eid Al-Adha which means “festival of the sacrifice”

THOUSANDS of Muslims around the world were out in force today to sacrifice livestock to mark one of their most sacred festivals.

Graphic photos shows the ceremonial killings of cows at a mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia, as part of Eid Al-Adha which means “festival of the sacrifice” – one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar.

Kids can be seen taking part and witnessing the ritual killing by the halal method – which are rules of slaughter based on Islamic law.

A Muslim butcher must perform the act and an animal’s throat must be cut by a sharp knife – severing the carotid artery, jugular vein and windpipe in a single swipe.

Then blood must be drained out of the carcass.

Snaps shows cattle blood splattered everywhere inside the religious building – with youngsters unfazed by the sight or even the smell of it.

One snap even shows a child carrying the head of a cow.

The religious holiday commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim, who is analogous to Abraham in the Bible, who was commanded by god to sacrifice his son to show obedience.

According to the Koran, as Ibrahim slashed the throat of his son, he found that an angel had replaced Ishmael with a goat.

So followers of Islam celebrate the story by sacrificing goats, cows, sheep as well as camels in the name of Allah.

The meat from the animals is then shared with family, friends and also given to feeed the poor.

  6. Czech lawyer launching anti-Islam book

Islam, with its barbarous and inhumane approach, is threatening the euro-American civilisation, lawyer Klara Samkova said when launching her book Why Islam Must Not Come to the Czech Republic yesterday.

Samkova repeated her view that Islam was no religion, but an ideology.

She said this for the first time at the seminar called “Shall We Be Afraid of Islam?” held in the Chamber of Deputies in May.

Samkova dismissed the notion that the latest book was controversial, calling it a mainstream affair.
“We are three weeks before [regional and Senate] elections. Show me any party claiming that Islam and migrants are O.K.,” Samkova said.

“I am absolutely convinced that Islam poses a global threat to the whole world. One has to tackle it,” she added. Samkova said Muslims were the cruellest victims of the “monstrous ideology.”

“I am not speaking about the need to protect the Czech Republic and Europe against Islam. I am convinced that we must allow to other people now suffering under the yoke of Islam in other countries to be freed, to be able to reject it freely,” Samkova said.

Chief editor of the Bondy publishers Lubos Kolacek said the book was not controversial.
“I am convinced that it should be on the market,” Kolacek told journalists, adding that according to his fellow workers, the book was not racist, but it wanted to provoke passions.

The state attorney’s office and the Czech Bar Association (CAK) have started dealing with Samkova’s statements about Islam against which the Turkish ambassador protested.

Samkova, a former member of the Bloc Against Islam, said Islam was the same as Nazism, fascism and communism.

“It is a state criminal ideology,” she is quoted as having said at the seminar about Islam in the Chamber of Deputies.
Islam must be dealt with just as all totalitarian regimes. It must be fought, it must be beaten and its spread must be prevented for once and all, she said.

  7. Now the Saudis Have Killer Drones, Too

Saudi Arabia has got a horrible human-rights record and a bloody war next door. And now it’s about to get its own fleet of flying, death-dealing robots.

Saudi Arabia is the world’s newest drone power. And that could be a problem, since the Saudis are in the midst of a rather nasty war.

Riyadh has signed a contract with Chinese firm Chengdu for an unspecified number of Pterodactyl drones, Saudi media reported in late August and early September.

The 30-foot-long, propeller-driven Pterodactyl, which Chengdu apparently modeled on America’s iconic Predator and Reaper drones, can fly for hours at a time carrying cameras and missiles. Operators on the ground control the unmanned aerial vehicle via satellite.

As far as killer drones go, the Pterodactyl probably isn’t terribly sophisticated—its sensors are certainly less capable than U.S.-made models—and that can mean the difference between life and death for innocent people caught in the crossfire as flying robots hunt militants on the ground.

Just ask people in Iraq. The Baghdad government acquired rudimentary CH-4 killer drones from China in late 2015. On one of the type’s very first missions against suspected ISIS terrorists in January, the drone’s operators accidentally targeted pro-government militamen, killing nine fighters and wounding 14.

The Saudi drone acquisition, for its part, could mean “grim news, especially for Yemenis,” […]

    • As the war escalates it will spread, the leftist who think they can import ever increasing numbers of refugees from all nations and not import the war are not only willfully blind they are willfully limiting their intelligence to a level that is not normally seen in human beings. All the left is doing is ensuring that there are civil wars in all western nations and that they will be very vicious wars that will force the civilized in the West to resort to barbarism to survive.

  8. Colin Powell’s Email Leak Horror: Hillary Clinton’s Health Under Fire for over a Year, Potential Endorsement Now Undermined

NEW YORK CITY, New York — Another former Secretary of State’s leaked emails are causing more headaches for the Democratic Party at a time things couldn’t get worse for presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Leaked emails from former Secretary of State Colin Powell undermine a looming potential endorsement of the Democratic ticket for president. They also show that Powell, major Democratic donors, and even U.S. Senators supporting Clinton have been seriously concerned about whether she is physically fit enough to serve as president of the United States for more than a year.

Former New Jersey GOP governor Christine Todd Whitman, in one leaked email first reported by The Daily Caller, wrote to Powell asking why he had not yet endorsed Clinton for president.

  9. EXCLUSIVE – Bill Clinton Alleged Rape Scene Witness: ‘Her Mouth Was All Swollen Up…Pantyhose Ripped’

NEW YORK – In her first extensive interview in over a decade, the nurse who found Juanita Broaddrick in her hotel room immediately after Bill Clinton allegedly raped Broaddrick recounted what she says she witnessed in that room 38 years ago.

“She was crying,” recalled Norma Rogers, a nurse who worked for Broaddrick, who at the time was a nursing home administrator volunteering for then-Arkansas Attorney General Bill Clinton’s 1978 gubernatorial bid.

“And the thing I think I remember most is that her mouth was all swollen up. It was cut. … Her pantyhose were all ripped,” Rogers stated in dramatic, lengthy new testimony.

  10. North Korea and the Delusions of International Diplomacy
The high cost of clinging to our superstitions and myths about our superior knowledge.

Last week North Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test, this one a 10-kiloton, miniaturized warhead that can be put on a missile. If North Korean claims are true, this successful test, along with the 20 long-range missile tests conducted this year, shows that a rogue thug state is on the brink of being able to send a nuclear-tipped missile as far as Chicago. President Obama responded with the usual empty diplomatic bluster, threatening “additional significant steps, including new sanctions to demonstrate to North Korea that there are consequences to its unlawful and dangerous actions.” Once again, the magical thinking of international diplomacy puts our national interests and security in mortal danger.

We’re well beyond a century’s worth of the delusional idealism of what historian Corelli Barnett calls “moralizing internationalism.” This is the notion that non-violent diplomatic “engagement,” economic sanctions, and transnational covenants and institutions like the U.N. can deter or stop aggression without a credible threat to use force.

A particularly surreal version of this stubborn belief appeared in early 1914, in the British National Peace Council Peace Yearbook:

  11. AUSTRALIA -ISIS-style video made by Sydney terror plotters released by court

A video has been played in court of a Sydney man, who later pleaded guilty to plotting a terror attack, holding a knife while speaking in front of an Islamic State (ISIS) flag.

Omar Al-Kutobi and Mohammad Kiad, who are accused of a plan to detonate a bomb and kill a member of the public with a knife, have both pleaded guilty to one count of doing an act in preparation or planning of a terrorist act.

The Crown in the NSW Supreme Court at Parramatta today showed a video of Al-Kutobi, 25, in front of an ISIS flag, which they say was filmed by Kiad, 27.

The court was also played footage, which was accessed online, showing how to make an Islamic State flag and two videos of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) being tested.

Prosecutor Peter Neil SC told the court the Crown alleges the substance used in the IED video was of the same composition of a substance found in the Fairfield converted garage the men shared.

The men were in communication with someone in Syria, who was passing their information to ASIO, in the hope of getting refuge in Australia or money.

Al-Kutobi and Kiad were arrested at the residence during western Sydney raids by counter-terrorism police in February 2015, where a hunting knife, a homemade form of Napalm and a homemade ISIS flag were among the items seized.

A camping shop employee told the court one of the men said he was buying a hunting knife to use on deer on the day they were arrested.

Al-Kutobi’s barrister Greg Scragg suggested to the shop worker he had been told the man had a creek out the back of his house where he went fishing.

But the employee said he could not recall any discussions about fishing.

The sentence hearing continues, with the men facing a maximum of life in jail.

  12. U.S. has killed or arrested 110 jihadis since 2014, terror expert says (christiandaily, Sep 14, 2016)
    http://christiandaily.com/article/u-s-has-killed-or-arrested-110-jihadis-since-2014-terror-expert-says/56779.htm

“As many as 110 jihadis with connections to the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have been arrested or killed in the United States since 2014, according to terrorism expert and author Sebastian Gorka.

On Saturday, the “Defeating Jihad: The Winnable War” author spoke during a panel discussion called “Jihad in America” at the Values Voter Summit in Washington. Department of Homeland Security whistleblower Philip Haney and American Islamic Forum for Democracy founder Zuhdi Jasser were also present at the forum, The Christian Post details.

Gorka explained why many Americans do not feel safer now than ever before. When he reportedly went to Pentagon two weeks ago to attend a briefing, he saw a heat map showing that ISIS already has fully operational affiliates in more than 18 countries.

“Two years ago, that number was seven. In 24 months, they have more than doubled their global expanse,” said Gorka. “Not only that, it controls territory in different regions of the world.”

In addition, he said U.S. authorities have either arrested or killed at least 110 ISIS-affiliated jihadis since the terror group rose to power in June 2014. The Threat Knowledge Group’s (TKG) website shows a list of the 110 jihadis including the reasons why they were arrested or killed.

Just last week, federal authorities have arrested Marie A. Castelli, 55, for allegedly advocating online for terror attacks in the country and for using her social media accounts to spread ISIS propaganda, an insider said. Other sources also told ABC News that the Kentucky woman lied to authorities when she was confronted about what she was doing…”

  14. CNN’s Creepy Gloating Over Death of Republican Representative

The media’s open hatred for anyone to the right is a truly nasty development. And it’s fueled by the younger generation of social justice activists who view the media as a forum for asserting their politics.

Combine the two and you get truly vile stories like this…

(CNN)A Michigan state lawmaker who voted to repeal universal helmet laws has died in a motorcycle crash, according to Michigan State Police.

The gag is obvious. He’s a Republican. He opposed helmet laws. And then, get this, he dies in a motorcycle crash.

  15. Theodore Shoebat Joins the Jihad, Says ‘Pamela Geller Is Worthy of Death’
Son of ex-jihadi shows that old jihadi habits die hard.

These are times that try men’s souls, and it happens occasionally that when tried, some souls reveal that they’re not what they appear to be. Several days ago, I received an email from an FBI special agent, saying that he wanted to speak with me and asking for contact information for Pamela Geller. The agent was looking for us, he told me when he got me on the phone, because he had a duty to notify us that the bureau had picked up word that a Muslim had mentioned our names and was looking for us in order to kill us. And now that jihadi has an unlikely ally, at least in wanting Pamela Geller dead: a putative foe of jihad terror, Theodore Shoebat.

Theodore Shoebat runs the website Shoebat.com, which many take as a reliable source for news of jihad activity that the mainstream media does not deign to report. Shoebat.com, however, has a reputation for sensationalistic unreliability: to take one notorious example, it posted a photo of a young German woman holding a sign reading, “Will Trade Racists For Rapists.” Amazing! Shocking! Astonishing proof of the suicidal stupidity of the European Left! There was just one catch: the sign was photoshopped. The original read, “Will Trade Racists for Refugees.” Shoebat.com never acknowledged this or retracted its original post.

In this, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Theodore Shoebat is the son of Walid Shoebat, who styles himself an ex-Muslim and reformed jihadist. Walid Shoebat, who certainly has demonstrated a broad knowledge of Islam and the jihad threat, has been challenged repeatedly, most notably on CNN, to substantiate his claims about his past. Several years ago I myself gave him a chance to answer all the charges against his veracity in a video interview; in purporting to do so, Walid Shoebat talked for a long time, said very little of substance, and left the principal charges of his own dishonesty unanswered. In personal exchanges more recently, I was struck by his dishonesty again.

  17. Bevin says physical fight may be needed to preserve conservative values

Gov. Matt Bevin said Saturday that America is at a fork in the road and if something isn’t done soon to protect religious and conservative values, people might have to physically fight for them.

“I want us to be able to fight ideologically, mentally, spiritually, economically, so that we don’t have to do it physically,” Bevin said during an impassioned speech at the Value Voters Conference in Washington D.C. Saturday. “But that may, in fact, be the case.”

That comment came after Bevin spoke about the “degradation” of society.

“It’s a slippery slope,” Bevin said. “First, we’re killing children, then it’s ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell,’ now it’s this gender-bending kind of ‘don’t be a bigot,’ ‘don’t be unreasonable,’ ‘don’t be unenlightened, heaven forbid,’ ‘just keep your mouth shut.’”

In his fifteen minute, off-the-cuff speech, Bevin compared conservatives sitting silently to Martin Niemöller, a Nazi imprisoned protestant minister who wrote a famous poem about how people remained silent as the Nazis persecuted different groups.

If Democrat Hillary Clinton is elected president, the cost could grow further down the road, he said.

  19. Authorities: Arrest made in arson fire at Florida mosque

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — A 32-year-old Florida man has been arrested and is facing a charge of arson with a hate crime enhancement in connection with a fire that heavily damaged the mosque that Orlando nightclub gunman Omar Mateen occasionally attended, authorities announced Wednesday.

Joseph Michael Schreiber was arrested without incident Wednesday afternoon and was being interrogated by investigators probing a fire set late Sunday that extensively damaged the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, said Maj. David Thompson of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Thompson told a news conference that Schreiber was taken into custody on a street in Fort Pierce by authorities acting on tips from members of the community and aided by surveillance video taken from the mosque and elsewhere. He said the arson charge, coupled with a hate crime enhancement under Florida law, could bring up to 30 years in prison in event of a conviction.

The fire was set late Sunday on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. The blaze also coincided with the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha.

Thompson said a search warrant was executed at Schreiber’s home, where investigators reported finding evidence linked to the arson, as well as anti-Islamic social media posts.

Schreiber was previously sentenced twice to state prison for theft, records. The Florida Department of Corrections records show he served his first stretch from March 2008 to July 2009 and his second from June 2010 to August 2014.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Schreiber had an attorney.

No one was injured in the fire, which burned a 10-by-10-foot hole in the roof at the back of the mosque’s main building and blackened its eaves with soot.

Mateen was killed by police after opening fire at the Pulse nightclub June 12 in a rampage that left 49 victims dead and 53 wounded. He professed allegiance to the Islamic State group. His father is among roughly 100 people who attend the mosque.

A weekend surveillance video from the mosque showed a man on a motorcycle approaching the building with a bottle of liquid and some papers, then leaving when there was a flash and shaking his hand as though he may have burned it, Thompson said. The first 911 calls were made about 45 minutes later after the fire had spread to the attic. It took about 4.5 hours for firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

No one had claimed responsibility for the attack, authorities said.

The FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined the investigation into the fire. Sheriff’s officials had released the video and asked for the public’s help in identifying the arsonist.

The fire was part of an escalating series of threats and violence perpetuated against the mosque and its members, said Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, a Florida spokesman for the Council of American-Islamic Relations. He said the mosque began receiving threatening phone calls shortly after the Pulse massacre. And in July, he said, a member was punched in the face as he arrived for morning prayers.

Sunday’s fire has left the mosque’s members “saddened and scared,” said assistant imam Hamaad Rahman.

Abu Wa’el Dhiab was unconscious and extremely dehydrated when paramedics arrived at the apartment where he is staying in Montevideo, said Dr. Julia Galzerano of the Medical Union of Uruguay, who was treating the former prisoner from Syria.

“We hope that it is reversible. We can’t know” for a while, Galzerano said. The doctor said she was told Dhiab had gone 12 days without water.

The video posted on YouTube on Wednesday says it was shot Monday in Nigeria’s northeastern Sambisa Forest at prayers marking Eid al-Adha festival. It shows scores of worshipping men, many armed, in a mosque and at an outdoor ceremony.

  23. Corruption and waste in Afghanistan: Role of US gov’t exposed in new report (RT, Sep 14, 2016)
    https://www.rt.com/usa/359352-corruption-and-waste-in-afghanistan/

“A new report examining widespread corruption and waste in Afghanistan found that the practice blossomed following the US invasion in 2001. The problem was fed by its slowness to recognize the problem and exacerbated by the injection of tens of billions dollars into the economy with very little oversight.

“Corruption in Conflict: Lessons from the U.S. Experience in Afghanistan” examined how from 2001 to 2014 the US government, through the Department of Defense, State, Treasury and Justice and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) understood the risks of corruption in Afghanistan, how the US evolved its understanding, and the effectiveness of that response.

SIGAR was created by Congress to provide independent and objective oversight of Afghan reconstruction projects and activities.

The report released on Wednesday had five main findings: 1) corruption undermined the US mission in Afghanistan by fueling grievances against the Afghan government and channeling material support to the Taliban; 2) the injection of tens of billions of dollars into the Afghan economy was governed by flawed oversight and contracting practices and “partnering with malign powerbrokers”; 3) the US was slow to recognize the problem; 4) when it did recognize the depth of corruption “security and political goals” trumped anti-corruption efforts; 5) in areas where it was successful it was only “in the absence of sustained Afghan and US political commitment.”

The report defined corruption as “the abuse of entrusted authority for private gain,” and placed in the context of Afghanistan’s kinship-based society where the gains from corruption often benefited not just an individual but a family, clan, tribe or ethnic group.

Corruption is the system of governance

According to SIGAR about $113.1 billion has been appropriated for Afghanistan relief and reconstruction since 2002. The funds were used by the Afghan National Security Forces to promote good governance, conduct development assistance, and engage in counter-narcotics and anti-corruption efforts.

In a 2010 US Embassy Kabul report on a meeting with senior US officials and the Afghan National Security Adviser, Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta said “corruption is not just a problem for the system of governance in Afghanistan; it is the system of governance.”

The report referred to a 2015 UK research that showed there was weak separation of the private and public spheres which resulted in widespread private appropriation of public resources, vertical- and identity-based relationships had primacy over horizontal, i.e. citizen-to-citizen relationships, and politics was centered around a centralization of power and patron-client relations replicated throughout society.

Opportunities for corruption expanded after 2001 as the amount of money in the economy grew from millions to billions of dollars with the Department of Defense budget at time equivalent to the entire Afghan economy and sometimes quadruple the amount.

“Many of the funds were licit, arriving via civilian and military contracts. At their peak in fiscal year 2012, DOD contract obligations for services in Afghanistan including transportation, construction, base support, translation/interpretation, an private security total approximately $19 billion, just under the Afghanistan’s 2012 gross domestic product of $20,5 billion,” stated the report. “From 2007 to 2014 those contract obligation totaled more than 89 billion.”

    Billions worth scandals

During the years of the Obama administration, Afghanistan was rocked by two corruption scandals: The Salehi arrest and the Kabul Bank losing $1 billion.

Salehi was involved in the New Ansari Money Exchange, a money transfer firm that moved money into and out of Afghanistan. The exchange was suspected of moving billions of dollars out of Afghanistan for Afghan government officials, drug traffickers and insurgents. US law enforcement and intelligence investigators estimated that as much as $2.78 billion was taken out of Afghanistan between 2007 and 2010.

“A wiretap recorded an aide to Karzai, Mohammad Zia Salehi, soliciting a bribe in exchange for obstructing the investigation into New Ansari. Reportedly, after US officials played some of the wiretaps for an adviser to Karzai, the adviser approved Salehi’s arrest,” stated the report.

Salehi was arrested in July 2010, but was released within hours on the orders of President Karzai and the case was dropped. The New York Times reported Salehi had once worked for notorious warlord Rashid Dostum and was also “being paid by the CIA.”

“If true, this would suggest a US intelligence agency was paying an individual as an intelligence asset even as US law enforcement agencies were building a major corruption case against him,” stated the report…”

The other corruption scandal involved the Kabul Bank, which paid was used among other things to pay the salaries of the Afghan military and police, was found in 2010 to have lost nearly $1 billion of US taxpayer’s funded foreign assistance to Afghanistan. The bank’s deposits had seemingly vanished into Dubai and off-shore locations and unknown offshore bank accounts and tax havens, through Ponzi schemes, fraudulent loans, mass looting and insider loans to fake and bogus companies by less than 12 people who were apparently linked to President Karzai.

Lack of oversight and slow response
Against this the DOD and USAID vetted contractors and implemented contracting guidance to reduce opportunities for corruption and while they were somewhat successful, “they were not unified by an overarching strategy or backed by sustained, high-level US political commitment,” stated the report.

During this time, from mid-2011 to March 2012, the US also sought to explore political reconciliation with the Taliban and to do so the US had to preserve a working relationship with President Karzai to ensure an Afghan government buy-in.

“The US government showed a lack of political commitment. When it became clear the Afghan government was not willing to undertake true reform – because it involved taking action against people connected to the highest levels of political power – the US government failed to use all of its available tools to incentivize steps towards resolution,” stated the report.

Another weakness in tackling corruption was the high turnover of US civilian and military staff “meant US institutional memory was weak and efforts were not always informed by previous experience.”

“One Afghan anticorruption expert noted that US agencies often hosted workshops and training that lasted only a few days, with limited follow-up. He suggested that a more fruitful approach might have been to establish a standing institute to train auditors, attorneys, investigative police and others for year, rather than days,” stated the report.

SIGAR’s report quoted Ryan Crocker, who re-opened the US Embassy in Kabul soon after the September 11, 2001 attacks and served again as ambassador in 2011-2012 as saying that “the ultimate point of failure for our efforts wasn’t an insurgency. It was the weight of endemic corruption.”

The report comes with recommendations for addressing corruption risks to US strategic objectives for future missions. It recommended that Congress pass legislation to make clear “that anticorruption is a national security priority in a contingency operation” and required strategies, benchmarks and “annual reporting on implementation.” It also recommended that Congress consider sanctions and the DOD, State and USAID should establish a joint vetting unit to better vet contractors and subcontractors in the field.

The recommendations for the executive branch level are that interagency task force should formulate policy and lead strategy on anticorruption during an operation and the intelligence community should analyze links between host government officials, corruption, criminality, trafficking and terrorism and provide regular updates.

“In Afghanistan today, corruption remains an enormous challenge to security, political stability, and development,” SIGAR said.”

  24. This Is Much Deeper Than Pneumonia’: Ed Klein on Hillary’s Health Issues

With 55 days until Election Day, a major issue dogging the Hillary Clinton campaign is the Democratic nominee’s health.

Clinton will be back on the campaign trail Thursday after collapsing following an early exit from a 9/11 memorial service on Sunday.

Ed Klein, who has been sounding the alarm on Clinton’s health for years, says that her collapse had nothing to do with her pneumonia diagnosis.

“This is much deeper than pneumonia,” Klein told Steve Doocy on “Fox and Friends” today.

Klein said that Bill Clinton is aware of his wife’s serious health problems and has “begged” her for years to go to the hospital and get a full medical check-up.

“She’s refused to do so, because she’s afraid if it leaks out,” Klein said.

He added that’s why video of Clinton collapsing is so damning, as it confirms rumors about her alleged poor health.

Klein described the former president as being “furious” when a video showed that his wife had collapsed, adding that he “begged” her not to go and offered to go in her place.

“He was afraid she’d collapse in public because she’s been doing it in private. … It’s hard to argue with video,” Klein said. “And up to now, the media has been in the tank for the Clintons, but they can’t argue with this video.”

“Even her friends don’t know exactly what’s wrong with her … but they do know that there’s something very seriously wrong with this woman.”
