The child from Holland was raped between 2am and 3am on Tuesday morning at the Old Bridge campsite known as Vieux Pont in Saint-Alban-Auriolles, Ardèche in the Rhone-Alpes region.
According to local reports the little girl’s parents were alerted to the sounds of her screaming and the attacker fled the scene.
Police have dispatched a helicopter and initially organised a team of ten officers to search the area.
However they have now put a total 25 officers on the case as they hunt the countryside looking for the man responsible.
