  1. Military Officer Fired for Gulenist Ties Named as Leader of Turkey’s Coup (sputniknews, July 16, 2016)
    http://sputniknews.com/news/20160716/1043093391/erdogan-kose-military-coup-gulen.html

“Colonel Muharrem Kose, a former officer in the Turkish Armed Forces was named by state-run Anadolu News Agency as the leader of the coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government.

The bloody coup attempt that struck Ankara on Friday now has a face — a former Turkish military officer who was dishonorably discharged in March 2016 for his alleged association with anti-government and US-based Imam Fethullah Gulen.

Colonel Muharrem Kose announced the formation of the “Peace Council,” an interim government to restore democracy and human rights in Turkey that Erdogan’s opponents claim have been stripped from the country as it had begun to drift ever closer to a theocracy after long being adored as the secular gem of the Middle East…”

  2. Sixty People Killed in Turkey Amid Failed Military Coup (sputniknews, July 16, 2016)
    http://sputniknews.com/news/20160716/1043094837/Erdogan-military-coup-turkey-war.html

“A failed military coup has left scores dead throughout Turkey including 60 civilian protesters who heeded the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to resist the attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government.

UPDATE: According to NTV, Erdogan’s residence in Ankara has been attacked by military helicopter of the coup attempt participants. Earlier, a calm was reported in Ankara, military aviation stopped flying over the city. However, intense gunfire exchange resumed soon after.

The president said the chopper has been downed. Smoke is rising over the explosion site at the moment, NTV noted.

On Saturday, Turkey faces the challenge of picking up the pieces after their democracy came under siege by a faction of military forces who sought to end the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan citing the leader’s drift away from the country’s long-held secularist values.

The self-proclaimed “Peace Council” allegedly led by disgraced Colonel Muharrem Kose claimed to have seized control of the government for a short period of time. Kose, who was discharged from his duties in March 2016 for his links to the anti-government Gulenist movement that has been accused of attempting to form a shadow government within Turkey.

Kose’s Peace Council had taken control of the TRT news station, the bridges, and the Ataturk International Airport in what at one point seemed like a successful coup attempt.

President Erdogan countered the military force with an impassioned plea to his countrymen to take to the streets to oppose the military overthrow of the government with millions of Turks heeding the calls. The “Peace Council” responded by opening fire on civilians inside of Turkey by rifle, tank, and helicopter leaving dozens wounded throughout the country.

Fighting continues to take place in Turkey even as the Erdogan government has once again established full control over government buildings, the airport and most of the bridges. A live video above shows ongoing unrest in Ankara with a bridge set aflame.

A senior Turkish official also confirmed that 13 soldiers who tried to enter the presidential palace during the coup attempt have been arrested.

The situation appears to be coming under control with the first flight landing at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport since the start of the failed military coup in what is seen as a sign that the horror that has struck the country is rapidly winding down.

The Turkish Airlines flight is the first to land at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport (IST), the third largest in Europe, which was closed amid the military coup.

  4. Obama slams Newt Gingrich’s proposal to test American Muslims for allegiance to Sharia law: ‘The very suggestion is repugnant, and an affront to everything we stand for as Americans!’ (dailymail, July 15, 2016)
    http://dailym.ai/2a04Ysc

“President Barack Obama clobbered former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Friday for suggesting that America should deport Muslims who profess a belief in Islamic Sharia law, telling a gathering of diplomats in Washington that the idea is ‘repugnant.’

Gingrich, who was at the time vying for Donald Trump’s running-mate slot, said Thursday on Sean Hannity’s Fox News Channel program that ‘we should frankly test every person here who is of a Muslim background, and if they believe in Sharia, they should be deported.’

An indignant Obama used Thursday’s deadly terror attack in southern France as a springboard to push back, without naming Gingrich, who lost the Republican vice-presidential nod to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence a few hours earlier.

‘In the wake of last night’s attacks, we’ve heard more suggestions that all Muslims in America be targeted, tested for their beliefs, some deported or jailed,’ Obama grimaced. ‘And the very suggestion is repugnant, and an affront to everything we stand for as Americans.’

‘We cannot give in to fear, or turn on each other, or sacrifice our way of life. We cannot let ourselves to be divided by religion, because that’s exactly what the terrorists want. We should never do their work for them.’…”

  5. Pakistani Model Killed After Offending Conservatives (abcnews, July 16, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/pakistani-model-killed-offending-conservatives-40629657

“Pakistani police say fashion model Qandeel Baloch, who recently stirred controversy by posting pictures of herself with a Muslim cleric on social media, has been killed by her brother.

Police spokeswoman Nabila Ghazanfar says police were alerted to the killing Saturday and are investigating.

Baloch offended many conservatives by posting pictures of herself with Mufti Qavi, a prominent cleric. She said the two of them enjoyed soft drinks and cigarettes together during the daylight hours in the holy month of Ramadan, when practicing Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.

Qavi denied the allegations, saying he only met with her to discuss the teachings of Islam.

Hundreds of Pakistani woman are murdered by family members each year in so-called honor killings, which are seen as punishment for violating conservative norms.”

  6. Crack SAS team rushed to London after Nice attack sparks terror fears (express, July 16, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/690077/sas-team-nice-attack-france-terror-isis-military-london-defence-uk-britain

“A TEAM of 40 SAS soldiers was secretly flown into London within hours of the Nice attack ready to provide an immediate response to an Islamic State assault, it has been revealed.

The “Immediate Response” team is part of a larger force who have been training across the UK alongside police, the Special Boat Service and the Special Reconnaissance Regiment.

Meanwhile, members of Britain’s top secret military Human Intelligence unit have been placed in London to work as spotters – tracking suspicious behaviour in key target areas and tracing would–be jihadis who have stopped using their phones for fear they may be caught.

A source said: “So many of the people being followed, close to 100 jihadists in the UK, no longer use their mobile phone because they known they can be intercepted…”

    • Interesting, they are taking the threat very seriously to have that level of a response.

  7. Turkey military coup ’caused by BREXIT’, claims Labour MP (express, July 16, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/690072/Turkey-coup-map-military-turkish-fco-Chris-Bryant-Brexit-EU-referendum-campaign-MP

“A FORMER Labour frontbencher has caused outrage after claiming the military coup in Turkey was caused by the campaign for Britain to leave the EU.

The coup saw soldiers attempt to take the country from the control of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Shots were fired among civilians and bombs were blasted at the nation’s parliamentary building.

But Labour MP Chris Bryant has claimed that the act of rebellion was fuelled by Britain’s Brexit campaign.

He said: “Turkey is now and has long been a lynchpin in European and wider security.

“Ludicrous Brexit lies undoubtedly contributed to destabilising.”

Despite uproar online after tweeting the remarks, the former Shadow Leader of the House of Commons refused to delete the statement – instead sharing comments from outraged members of the public.

One replied: “Somewhere there had to be some **** that blamed Brexit for the Turkey coup, and here folks is that very ****…..”

  8. Islamic State says its ‘soldier’ behind Nice truck attack

BEIRUT (AP) — An Islamic State-run media outlet says the man who barreled his truck into a crowd in the French coastal city of Nice is a “soldier” of the group.

The Aamaq news agency on Saturday cited a “security source” as saying the attacker “carried out the operation in response to calls to target the citizens of coalition countries fighting the Islamic State.”

The statement did not name the attacker, and the language implied that he may have acted independently. There is no evidence IS was involved in planning the July 14 attack.

The attack killed 84 people and wounded 200. The driver was identified as Mohamed Bouhlel, a Tunisian deliveryman known to authorities as a petty criminal.

    • Brother reveals ‘violent, drug-crazed’ ISIS ‘soldier’ Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel smuggled £84,000 to his family in Tunisia DAYS before murdering 84 in Nice

Family of 31-year-old father of three say he was an angry and violent man
Father said he stopped talking to relatives and given drugs for depression
He added Bouhlal was in a bad state of mind after separating from his wife
Days before the attack he send money he had saved in France to Tunisia
Despite killing 84 and ISIS claiming responsibility, brother says ‘he is not a terrorist’

ISIS killer Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel sent his family £84,000 just days before his Bastille Day atrocity, his brother told MailOnline.

The Islamic fanatic persuaded friends to smuggle the bundles of cash back to his family in their hometown of Msaken, Tunisia.

Although Bouhlel had been sending small sums of money to his family, his brother admitted that they were stunned by the size of the ‘fortune’.

‘Mohamed sent the family 240,000 Tunisian Dinars (£84,000) in the last few days,’ Jaber Bouhlel told MailOnline.

‘He used to send us small sums of money regularly like most Tunisians working abroad. But then he sent us all that money, it was fortune.

‘He sent the money illegally. He gave cash to people he knew who were returning to our village and asked them to give it to the family.’

He added: ‘My brother is not a terrorist.’

His father also insisted that Bouhlel was mentally ill and not a radicalised soldier as claimed today by ISIS.

Mohamed Mondher Lahouaiej Bouhlel, whose son killed at least 84 people on Bastille Day, told how he suffered from severe depression in an interview with French TV BMF.

‘From 2002 to 2004 he had problems that led to a nervous breakdown.

‘He’d get angry and shout and broke everything in front of him. He was violent and very ill. We took him to the doctor and he was put on drugs.

‘Whenever there was a crisis we took him back again.

‘He was always alone. Always silent, refusing to talk. Even in the street he wouldn’t greet people.’

Mr Mondher said he had no contact with his son after he moved to France from their home in Msaken, eastern Tunisia.

‘He didn’t come back even when his brothers and sisters called,’ he said.

He appeared bewildered as he insisted his son had ‘no connection with religion. He didn’t fast and keep Ramadan. He drank. He even took drugs.

‘We’re all in a state of shock at what’s happened’

He confirmed that his son and his estranged wife, a French-Tunisian from Nice, were ‘not on good terms’.

His brother Jaber also said he had not seen his brother for several years and the money had come as a complete surprise.

The family live in an impoverished neighbourhood in Msaken, some 90 miles south of the capital Tunis.

Msaken is also just 12 miles from the once-popular coastal resort of Sousse, where Tunisian ISIS gunman Seifeddine Rezgui massacred 38 holidaymakers in June 2015.

The last time he visited the family was in 2012. He came home to attend the wedding of our sister,’ continued Jaber.

‘But really we had heard very little from him.

‘My aunt called my father to tell her that his son had been killed by French police after his terror attack.’

Jaber Bouhlel refuses to accept that his brother is a terrorist – despite his single-handed murder of 84 and the injury of over 200, many seriously, with some 18 people on life-support.

He said he hasn’t questioned how his brother accumulated the cash fortune that he sent to his family.

‘Mohamed sent us all of his savings, all of his worth in France. He had worked for eight years and this was the money he saved in France,’ he said.

He told how Mohamed became depressed following his separation from his wife and three children, now aged five, three and 18-months.

Bouhlel was already known to police for a history of petty crime, including theft and domestic violence, but he was not under surveillance as a terrorist threat.

His court-appointed lawyer, Corentin Delobel, said he observed ‘no radicalisation’ whatsoever.

Bouhlel had never been place on a radical watch list, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said

But Paris-based prosecutor Francois Molins said he could have been inspired by calls from extremist groups to carry out terrorist acts in France.

  9. Does Erdogan want his own Islamic state?

Parliament Speaker Ismail Kahraman unexpectedly sparked controversy in Turkey when on April 25 he declared that Turkey’s new constitution should forgo mention of “secularism” and instead be a “religious constitution” referencing God. His words reignited Turkey’s always tense “secularism debate,” which has been amplified since 2002 when the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power. Kahraman’s remarks led to protests in a number of cities, a call by the main opposition leader for him to resign and allegations by secular pundits that the Speaker had shown the AKP’s “true face,” its “real intentions.” Because Kahraman is a known confidant of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, many also suspected that his statement was part of a scheme being orchestrated by Turkey’s leader.

  10. Serbia to send army, police on borders because of migrants

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia will deploy joint army and police patrols on the borders with Bulgaria and Macedonia to curb illegal entry of migrants and people smuggling, the Balkan country’s prime minister said Saturday.

Serbia’s move comes days after EU member Hungary started applying harsher border control rules that include sending migrants back to Serbia, which has left hundreds stranded in make-shift camps along the Serbia-Hungary border.

  11. FBI issues ‘credible threat’ warning to South Florida law enforcement

The FBI issued a “credible threat” warning to law enforcement agencies throughout South Florida on Friday.

In a brief, one-paragraph statement, FBI Special Agent Michael Leverock said his agency offered a “safety bulletin” regarding the threat to police departments. No further information was available.

Immediately after Leverock’s statement, a joint agency of local, state and federal law enforcement called the Southeast Florida Fusion Center said there was no credible threat to the public.

The threat, according to sources, was directed at police. As a precaution, police departments across South Florida doubled up patrols, pulled motorcycle cops from the street and had officers wear protective vests.

Though the threat was for between 1 and 2 p.m. Friday, police said they will remain on alert for the rest of the day.

  13. France, Germany, Sweden: Governments betray their people by making excuses for Islamists

The size of the crisis the modern West finds itself in cannot be overstated. Human reason itself seems to be melting down. The god we have made of modern government seems to flicker in and out of phase before us, telling us nothing but lies, and urging us to believe and profess things that are insane.

Let me say at the outset that you must take heart from the fact that you can still see this. You haven’t lost your mind. And that matters.

But Western governments have lost their minds, in a collective and most remarkable sense. In some parts of the world, there is still a feral strain of common sense holding governments together – not a high-order moral imperative, perhaps, but an instinct for reality and survival. That instinct is bizarrely, surreally lacking, however, in the halls of government in much of the West.

We could pick a lot of examples, but some of the most astounding have to do with governmental evaluation of the damage done, and the threat posed, by Islamic extremists in Europe. It is truly incredible to uncover the bad faith Europe’s public officials have shown in recent months. And America’s current crop of public officials – and media – are not far behind, in either their posture toward Islamic extremism, or their determination in general to lie about threats and make them fit political narratives.

  14. France: The Coming Civil War

“We are on the verge of a civil war.” That quote did not come from a fanatic or a lunatic. No, it came from head of France’s homeland security, the DGSI (Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure), Patrick Calvar. He has, in fact, spoken of the risk of a civil war many times. On July 12th, he warned a commission of members of parliament, in charge of a survey about the terrorist attacks of 2015, about it.

In May 2016, he delivered almost the same message to another commission of members of parliament, this tme in charge of national defense. “Europe,” he said, “is in danger. Extremism is on the rise everywhere, and we are now turning our attention to some far-right movements who are preparing a confrontation”.

What kind of confrontation? “Intercommunity confrontations,” he said — polite for “a war against Muslims.” “One or two more terrorist attacks,” he added, “and we may well see a civil war.”

In February 2016, in front of a senate commission in charge of intelligence information, he said again: ” We are looking now at far-right extremists who are just waiting for more terrorist attacks to engage in violent confrontation”.

No one knows if the truck terrorist, who plowed into the July 14th Bastille Day crowd in Nice and killed more than 80 people, will be the trigger for a French civil war, but it might help to look at what creates the risk of one in France and other countries, such as Germany or Sweden.

The main reason is the failure of the state.

    http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/8489/france-the-coming-civil-war

(Be sure and read this article, it shows how the civil war has already begun but most people including most in the government don’t realize this fact.)

Awesome: Study about dating habits of liberals is everything you’d imagine

Even when it comes to dating, conservatives and liberals couldn’t be further apart from each other in their beliefs, wants, or desires.

A new online study released by OkCupid shows that people who identify as either political group don’t just prefer the old cliches such as ‘long walks on the beach’ or ‘somebody with a sense of humor.’

In fact, the study analyzed over 200,000 profiles, culling keywords from their clients dating searches and discovered that people on the right and the left are looking for very specific things in a date.

The results are not shocking, with every stereotype you could possibly imagine coming to fruition.

    Are you ready?

It seems conservatives, when searching for their perfect match, use the keywords ‘outdoors’ and ‘shooting range.’

Liberals? Their preferred terms when looking for love are ‘museums,’ ‘yoga,’ and ‘crying.’

We’re not even making that up. The study is real, and it is spectacular.

    • It’s important that you have guns BEFORE you get married, so that the liberal side of your marriage will be NEUTRALIZED in their power to nullify gun ownership. This is important because the MSM’s Gallup Polls are squealing with delight with the 36% rate of households with firearms. Give firearms to your children as gifts before they leave home. Unregistered firearms are best, as the government will not be able to locate and confiscate them. The registered gun is instantly determined by the police. In Chicago, when guns were registered, the police linked the address of any place of interest to their gun database. Any encounter at your address was immediately escalated in police eyes if you registered your gun. Funny thing, there were Chicago PD & retired CPD than REGISTERED GUNS!

We need to raise the number of unregistered guns in the communist states like New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, DC, etc.

      • Don’t worry about that the coming chaos is going to destroy gun control for at least a Century and probably much longer.

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/interfaith-program-held-vandalized-mosque-40633987

“An interfaith gathering will be held at the Rhode Island mosque that was the target of vandalism following the deadly truck attack in Nice, France.

The Rhode Island Council for Muslim Advancement says the program is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Masjid Al-Hoda, in Kingston, near the University of Rhode Island’s main campus.

RICMA says it’s calling upon the wider community to stand up against “hate and violence in all forms against any group of people.”

Police say someone spray-painted anti-Muslim graffiti in large red letters on the front of the mosque and smashed its windows. It was reported not long after Thursday night’s Nice attack.

The vandalism spurred the Council on American-Islamic Relations to call for authorities around the U.S. to increase police patrols to protect Muslim institutions.”

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/finland-holds-auction-soviet-cars-abandoned-migrants-40634471

“Finnish customs officials say over 100 mostly vintage Soviet cars abandoned by migrants crossing the Nordic country’s border with Russia have been sold in a two-day auction that drew some 1,300 car aficionados to the Arctic.

Spokesman Sampo Vaisanen from the customs unit in Salla said Saturday the Finnish state netted some 19,000 euros ($21,000) for selling 129 cars.

Many were rusty Soviet-era Ladas and Volgas from the 1970s and 1980s.

The cars, sold mainly to collectors in prices ranging from one euro to a few hundred euros, were left by migrants earlier this year. Finland barred people from crossing the vehicles-only border point in Salla on bicycles for safety reasons.

The highest price in the auction was paid for a rare Volga 3010 model, which sold for 1,200 euros to the Salla Municipality “as a souvenir,” county official Asko Viitanen told The Associated Press.”

  18. Egypt’s Pro-Army Media Jump Gun, Welcome Turkey Coup (abcnews, July 16, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/egypts-pro-army-media-jump-gun-turkey-coup-40631510

“Some of Egypt’s pro-army media jumped the gun in their reporting on Friday night’s attempted coup in Turkey, declaring it a success and welcoming the overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

At least three newspapers ran headlines Saturday declaring that Turkey’s army had overthrown Erdogan. But by the time their print editions came out, Turkey’s government had largely succeeded in quashing the coup after a night of clashes that left dozens dead.

As the events unfolded, Egyptian TV personality Ahmed Moussa declared “this isn’t a military coup,” but “a revolution within the Turkish armed forces.” Moussa was an avid supporter of Egypt’s military overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi, an elected but divisive Islamist, in 2013. Erdogan, also an Islamist, harshly condemned Morsi’s overthrow, and the two countries have had tense relations since.

Another Egyptian talk show host, Osama Kamal, appeared to mock Erdogan for appearing on a television interview over a mobile phone during the early hours of the coup attempt. Erdogan had been on a seaside vacation when tanks rolled into the streets of Ankara and Istanbul. He appeared on television over a mobile phone to urge supporters into the streets to defend the government, spurring large crowds to heed his call, before flying home early Saturday and declaring the coup to have failed.

Egypt’s current president, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, led Morsi’s ouster while he was defense minister, as millions took to the streets to demand Morsi’s resignation, a situation vastly different from what has transpired in Turkey, where the military seems to have been divided since the very start. El-Sissi has led a broad crackdown on dissent since he took over, focused initially on Islamists but later expanding to secular opponents as well…”

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/brazil-deports-franco-algerian-nuclear-physicist-40635290

“The Justice Ministry says Brazil has deported a Franco-Algerian nuclear physicist who was once convicted of association with terror plotters.

The ministry’s press office says Adlene Hicheur was deported to France Friday night.

A French court sentenced Hicheur to five years in prison in 2012 for “criminal association” with al-Qaida’s north African wing. He denied guilt, was released in 2013 and moved to Brazil.

Hicheur has been working at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The university said on its website that the deportation was unjustified and ignored democratic principles such as the right to defense.

Any country that stands by the Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen will not be a friend of Turkey and will be considered at war with the NATO member, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Saturday.

The government said that followers of Gulen, who has been living in self-imposed exile in the United States for years, were behind the attempted coup by a faction of the military on Friday.

The government accuses Gulen of trying to build a “parallel structure” within the judiciary, education system, media and military as a way to overthrow the state, a charge the cleric denies.

    • Turkish Army leaves Iraq

The Turkish Army officially left the Bashiqa Military Camp in Iraq on Friday after the attempted coup in Istanbul and Ankara put the entire country in a state of emergency.

The Turkey Army used the Bashiqa Military Camp to allegedly train militiamen to fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS); however, the camp was often used to scope out members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

    • Turkey: PM Yildirim condemns coup attempt, says 2800 arrests made

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim stated that the military coup attempt was “organised by the illegally established parallel terror organisations inside the Turkish Armed Forces”, speaking in Ankara, Saturday.

SOT, Binali Yildirim, Turkish Prime Minister (Turkish): “This attempt has been suppressed but we have martyrs. There are 160 martyrs in total at the moment and 1440 injuries. There are 2839 different ranked officers arrested which took part in this dirty attempt. This coup attempt is not in the chain of hierarchic commanding of Turkish Armed Forces but an attempt which was organised by the illegally established parallel terror organisations inside the Turkish Armed Forces. With this opportunity, I would like to salute the valuable commanders of our army which have not been given any credit to this attempt and proved their devotion to our nation and our flag. I also like to express my extended thanks to the NGO’s, our citizens and all political party supporters which fulfilled the squares in the cities at the very beginning of this attempt. Especially I want to congratulate the members of the special forces which defeated this curse by fighting heroically.”

SOT, Binali Yildirim, Turkish Prime Minister (Turkish):”Those who open fire at the citizens of this nation with the tanks of this state, with the guns of this state, with the money of this state, with the bombs of this state, with the planes and helicopters of this state are worse than the dirty PKK terrorists. This nation will never and ever forget about this mob. I want to recall our martyrs once more which gave their lives for the nation for the flag and for the liberty by going in front of the tanks with mercy and gratitude.”

    • Germany: Merkel condemns Turkey’s failed military coup

German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the failed military coup attempt in Turkey, in a press confererence in Berlin, Saturday.

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “In the name of the whole government, I heavily condemn the actions of the Turkish military units, which have violently tried to overthrow the elected government and elected President of Turkey. It is tragic, that so many people have paid for this coup attempt with their lives. The blood shedding is Turkey must stop now. Germany is on the side for all those in Turkey who defend democracy and the constitutional state. It is and stays the right of the people to determine in free elections who reigns. A political change has to happen in the frames of political institutions and according to the democratic rules. Tanks in the streets and aerial attacks against their own population are wrong. This stance we have expressed early in the morning today with our European partners and the EU institutions, in the scope of EU-ASEM summit in Mongolia. From the first news of Turkey’s events, I have been in continuous contact with those responsible in the govenrment. Especially with Foreign Minister Steinmeier, Vice Chancellor Gabriel, and the Chief of the Chancellery Altmeier.

    • Erdogan urges Obama to extradite Fethullah Gülen to Turkey

President Erdo?an urged his American counterpart Obama late Saturday to extradite Fethullah Gülen to Turkey.

“I hereby call on US President Obama to extradite that person living on a 400-acre compound in Pennsylvania,” he added.

Speaking about the coup attempt plotted by a minor Gülenist faction within the military, he said that the illegal act and they do not represent the military.

President Erdogan later responded to the chanting crowd who asked for execution of coup-plotters. “It’s a right to discuss every opinion in a democratic country. We don’t need to ask for permission to do this,” he stated.

“I am the Commander-In-Chief of Turkish Armed Forces by the constitution,” he said, pointing to the pro-coup Gülenist faction.

    • Turkish Attempted Coup Backgrounders: Who Is Imam Gulen and Why Is He America’s Largest Charter School Operator?

      Steve Sailer
      July 15, 2016, 10:14 pm

There’s a coup attempt going on in Turkey by the military. But Erdogan, the long time big man, is also blaming his former ally, Imam Gulen’s cult, which controlled the test prep centers of Turkey and became the biggest operator of charter schools in the U.S. Here’s my 2014 Taki’s Magazine article on Gulen in case he proves relevant:

The Shadowy Imam of the Poconos by Steve Sailer January 01, 2014

And even if the military hasn’t aligned itself with Gulen, the way Erdogan aligned with Gulen to take down the military around 2012 and then Erdogan aligned with the military to take down Gulen around 2014, it’s still pretty informative about How Things Work in Turkey.

By the way, the FBI was aggressively raiding Gulen charter schools across America in 2014, looking to document how the cult skims money from local American taxpayers to finance their operations, but I haven’t heard much about it recently. My assumption would be that the CIA explained to the FBI that having local property taxpayers ripped off for a few hundred million per year is a cheap way to have a potential player in the Great Game of “Who Controls Constantinople?” (But I’m making that up, so don’t take my word for it.)

And here’s my more general 2013 article I wrote for Taki’s on the deep structures of Turkish politics:

The Byzantine Forces Behind Turkish Politics by Steve Sailer June 19, 2013

Also, remind me again why Chancellor Merkel has been financially pounding hell out Greece, which, for all its sins, is part of the European Union, while cozying up to and inviting into the E.U. Turkey, which is not?

I have this weird notion that the European Union would be more popular with Europeans if it tried harder to benefit Europeans than non-Europeans in, say, West Asia.

      http://turkey.liveuamap.com/en/2016/16-july-prokurdish-hdp-offices-under-attack-in-by-proerdogan

Hours after the PM’s thanks, 3 HDP offices were attacked

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim thanked the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) who condemned an attempted coup to overthrow the existing Turkish government. Just a few hours later, simultaneous attacks were carried out on three HDP offices.

“I am thanking the presidents of all Turkish political parties, especially HDP who condemned the coup,” said Yildirim at an extraordinary session in the damaged Turkish parliament on Saturday.

“I am proud of the Turkish nationals who took to streets and altogether said no to the coup,” Yildirim added.

Within a few hours of the Yildirim’s conciliatory gesture, attacks were carried out on HDP offices in three separate locations: Osmaniye, Malatya, and Iskenderun, a local official confirmed to Rudaw.

Friday night’s attempted coup was the first attack on the parliament in the history of Turkey and the prime minister vowed, “Those who staged the coup will not get away with it. They will be punished.”

In a statement made earlier in the day, co-chair of HDP, Selahattin Demirtas condemned the coup. “We have been against coups throughout history, and if today such things happen, we will stand against it,” he said. “I emphasize that coups have never supported or endorsed democracy in Turkey.”

Demirtas also condemned the attack on the Turkish parliament building, saying “those who waged the coup attempted to target MPs who are elected by the people, this is a catastrophic event.”

“Although opposition parties within the parliament have been largely charged with outrageous accusations, yet, in response to such coups, the opposition parties have altogether condemned it, in order to help develop democracy in the country,” Demirtas continued. “Our stance is and was clear, today we stand against this coup, and such an attempted coup has no place in the policies of our party.”

Turkish lawmakers met in a rare show of political unity in the wake of an attempted military coup against the government and held an emergency session in Ankara, while hundreds of pro-government demonstrators gathered outside the parliament to protest the failed coup.

In an historical night, a faction within the Turkish military staged a coup in Ankara and Istanbul Friday night and they briefly controlled the two cities’ main airports as well as the parliament building before they were overcome by government supporters who poured into the streets, and members of the police force.

    • Egypt blocks UN Security Council condemnation of Turkey unrest over statement wording

The United Nations Security Council failed on Saturday to condemn the violence and unrest in Turkey after Egypt objected to the wording of a statement that called on all parties to “respect the democratically elected government of Turkey.”

Foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid told Ahram Online Egypt had reservations about the way part of the statement was phrased, saying it was not objecting to the content of the statement.

“Talks are still underway after Egypt’s decision and we are yet to see if we will eventually approve a rephrased statement,” he said.

Abu Zeid declined to reveal the part of the statement that Egypt objected to.

“I do not like to comment while the statement is still deliberated by the Security Council,” he added.
The US-drafted statement expressed grave concern over the situation in Turkey, urged the parties to show restraint, avoid any violence or bloodshed, and called for an urgent end to the crisis and return to rule of law.

Statements by the 15-member Security Council have to be agreed by consensus.
Reuters quoted anonymous diplomats as saying that Egypt argued that the UN Security Council was not in a position to determine whether a government had been democratically elected.

Egypt’s mission to the United Nations reportedly did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Turkish forces loyal to President Tayyip Erdogan largely crushed an attempted military coup on Saturday after crowds answered his call to take to the streets in support of the government and dozens of rebels abandoned their tanks.

The relationship between Egypt and Turkey deteriorated after the 2013 ouster of Egypt’s Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, a close ally of Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party

    • “This is what I want to say to all of you: thank you for coming to Germany! When I think of all of you who came to my country in last year or before that, I feel deeply thankful. There are two reasons for my thankfulness.

The first one is related to our history. My nation has been partly or fully responsible for starting two huge wars and killing millions of people because of their political views, their sexual orientation or because of their race like Jews, Romans and others. 70 years ago we were the most hated nation on planet Earth. Both of my Grandfathers were involved in these wars. I do not know if they killed people whose grandchildren now come back to us – i.e. from former Yugoslavia.

And then many people in my nation asked God to forgive us and asked other nations to forgive us and did what we could do to repair some of the damage. And we received mercy from God and from people. We could rebuild our nation, we could also rebuild trust. There might be some of you who came to our nation simply because it is rich. That´s ok. But I believe that most of you chose Germany because you trusted that we would treat you well. This brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for trusting us. Thank you for coming to us.

I know that this is not your first choice. Many of you have lost everything you owned, people you love and some of you even lost their health. I cannot really imagine what it is like, or feel it the right way. I wish that you did not have to come here;. not for our sake, but for yours. I wish you could have kept your homes, your loved ones, your jobs, and your future.

In the meantime, I ask you to not feel sorry for us that we now “have to” handle this situation. Yes it is a challenge to suddenly have 1 Million recently arrived people in our country, but we chose to say “Yes, we can do it!” challenges are like weights for a weight lifter. 25 years ago we were blessed with the reunification of our nation – and with the huge challenges that came along with it.

Since then we haven´t had any real problems. And for most of us that was boring. We are a nation of problem solvers who get bored if there are no problems to solve. People, young people were searching for a meaning, and suddenly one million of you came to our country. So with you there were naturally a lot of challenges: housing, organization, food, clothes, work places, and language courses: tons of them, and thousands of opportunities to solve problems.

Two Berlin students solved a huge part of the problem of university education by starting Kiron University. Others developed “what’s Germany”; an app for language learning. Grandmas started knitting clubs to provide warm scarves. All over Germany people are solving little and big problems.

Sometimes we solve problems for you, and that is good. Sometimes we solve problems together with you – which is even better. Many of us have become more active, more political and more alive. Like the seventy- year old woman who only wanted to bring some soap to a refugee place. There was a person to help who asked her if she would like to take care of one newly arriving family; so she agreed. She told me with eyes sparkling with joy how she is learning to use whatsapp and translation programs and how she enjoys to show the kids and parents where things are in their little town.

Yes, there are people who are unhappy and afraid of all of the newcomers and the changes they bring. Most Germans love security – and some perceive changes as a threat. But to many of us you brought a lot of enrichment, more joy, and more challenges that make us more alive. We learn about new cultures, meet wonderful people and learn new words. My favorite Word in Arabic is “Farasha” which means a butterfly. It reminds me of the saying “It is the end, says the caterpillar. It is the beginning says the butterfly.” It is my hope that – after all you have gone through we can work together to make it a new beginning. Thank you for trusting us. Thank you for making us more alive. Thank you for coming to Germany.”

  26. Dutch Turks Assault Dutch Media After Coup Attempt in Turkey

Dutch Turkish hooligans in the city of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, declared war on Dutch media yesterday when the Turkish military staged a coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

When the soldiers attempted their coup, Erdogan told his own supporters to go out on the streets and resist the military takeover. The results could immediately be seen: thousands of civilians climbed on top of tanks and made it impossible for the soldiers to carry out their instructions. Because of this (and some other rookie mistakes) the military takeover failed.

However, Turks in Turkey weren’t the only ones who did what Erdogan told them. As Dutch website De Dagelijkse Standaard (or DDS, The Daily Standard, which I own) reported earlier today, Dutch Turks did the same last night. Instead of fighting against soldiers — obviously there weren’t any Turkish soldiers in the Netherlands — they declared war on the Dutch media.

When a journalist for state channel, the NOS, tried to report about the pro-Erdogan protests in Rotterdam, he was immediately attacked by these ‘Turks.” Note: these people were born and raised in the Netherlands. In most cases, their parents or grandparents moved to the Netherlands. They have lived nowhere else. When (or if) they go to Turkey it’s because it’s holiday season and they want to enjoy the beautiful Turkish weather and beaches.

That doesn’t prevent them from feeling Turkish, not Dutch. What’s more, many of them are proudly loyal to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s autocratic and Islamist ruler.

The NOS explains what happened in Rotterdam when their reporter tried to do his job:

At a certain moment the atmosphere changed. A group of young boys attacked our camera team. Reporter Robert Bas says that one cameraman was beaten up, their car was also damaged. “There’s a strong anti-Western media attitude here,” he said.

If you don’t understand why these Turkish Dutch youths would riot in the Netherlands because of an attempted coup in Turkey, you’re not alone. As DDS reporter Tim Engelbart writes:

If these ‘heroic young men’ want to make a difference, I’d encourage them to move to Turkey. They won’t accomplish anything here in the Netherlands, except, of course, for the fact that they once again prove that they consider themselves first and foremost Turks, not Dutchmen.

There is something very, very seriously wrong with the Turkish community in the Netherlands. These people were born and raised in “the lowlands,” but behave as if they’re only loyal to Turkey, and especially to President Erdogan, a man who’s known for his attempts to destroy the freedom of the press and freedom of speech. Apparently his Turkish-Dutch followers share his views and are not afraid to act on them when given an excuse.
