  1. HIV infections in adults worsen, UNAIDS warns
New HIV infections among adults, defined as over 15 years old, were now rising in Eastern Europe, central Asia, the Caribbean and Middle East and North Africa, the report said.
“We are sounding the alarm,” said Michel Sidibe, executive director of UNAIDS.
“We have a 5-year window of opportunity. If we miss this, we will have a rebound in this epidemic, we’ll have resistance and we will not be able to control the epidemic and make sure that we end it by 2030,” he told a news conference in Geneva.

  4. French missions in Turkey cancel National Day events over security fears (reuters, July 13, 2016)
    http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-turkey-security-france-idUKKCN0ZT0ZX?rpc=401

“French diplomatic missions in Turkey have cancelled their planned events to mark France’s July 14 National Day due to security concerns, the consulate general in Istanbul said on Wednesday.

“Information points to a serious threat against plans for the celebration of the July 14 national holiday in Turkey. As a precaution, we have decided, in conjunction with the Turkish authorities, to cancel the celebrations,” a statement from the mission in Istanbul said.

The consulate general had been due to hold a reception on Wednesday evening, while French missions in the capital Ankara and the Aegean coastal city of Izmir had planned events for Thursday.

Turkey faces multiple security threats, including from Islamic State militants, blamed for an attack on Istanbul airport last month which killed 45 people and wounded hundreds, as well as from Kurdish insurgents.”

  5. Turkey to develop ties with Syria – PM Yildirim (BBC, July 13, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36781226

“Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has said his country will aim to develop relations with Syria.

Mr Yildirim said Turkey needed to boost diplomatic relations in the region.

His televised speech appears to suggest a sharp U-turn by the government. Diplomatic ties between Turkey and Syria were severed after the Syrian conflict began in 2011.

Turkey has long said the only solution for regional peace would be for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to go.

Mr Yildirim said the stability of Syria and Iraq were crucial for the success of counter-terrorism efforts.

The news comes at a time of great political instability in the country, says the BBC’s Katy Watson in Istanbul.

In the past year, Turkey has been hit by a wave of bombings from both Kurdish militants and the so-called Islamic State.”

  6. China declares right to set up air defence zone in South China Sea

hina said on Wednesday it has the right to set up an air defence zone over the South China Sea, a move that would heighten tensions following a landmark tribunal ruling.

“If our security is being threatened, of course we have the right to demarcate a zone,” Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin said, following a UN-backed ruling on Tuesday that Beijing had no legal basis for its expansive claims in the strategic waters.

Beijing has already said it does not recognise the court’s ruling, which upheld a challenge from the Philippines that China had breached its sovereign rights with its actions in the region.

    • This call for a day of rage is ignoring the facts in both shootings, which is normal for the left.

    • I don’t know what to make of the two killings. St. Louis seems to be a case of a criminal with a gun being killed. The other in WS/Mn ? is still open to investigation. If either or both of these investigations prove wrong doing by the police I hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
However, shutting down interstates is not the way to do it. If I were on an emergency run to a hospital, I would run these people down. I would first attempt to tell them that my situation was extreme and then I would run them down…
I think we will see this more and more if they persist.
What are law abiding citizens to think when their right to travel is impinged?

      • Back in the 90’s I had a job that caused me to go into some of the worst neighborhoods in L A. To do general field work I would go in at 6 AM on a Sunday, thinking all the gang bangers were asleep at that point.
What I saw was old ladies in hats toddling off to church.
When I had to come back during business hours I brought a body guard…
Until the black community solves its 73 percent out of wedlock birth rate and consolidates itself into families instead of gangs, this situation won’;t change. I don’t think teachers or politicians can do anything about this, except ,make it worse,
My family was horribly concerned that I was going into these environments and one of my sons told a Dad from our school that his mother needs a body guard to do her job… He approached me and said Wait, what? To which I explained to him that less than 30 miles from him this pathology lives.
That wasn’t an ice breaker for an upscale educational institution.

  7. Brexit Disrupts Nonchalant European Union Meddling

The June 23 vote by the United Kingdom electorate to leave the European Union should be seen in the context of two other recent European events. Three days earlier, on June 20, the EU’s Foreign Ministers Council decided to solve the Palestinian problem by Christmas with its endorsement of French President François Hollande’s “peace initiative.” Three days after the vote, on June 26, the second election in Spain within a few months failed once again to produce a viable majority for any government. Worse still, the steadily rising popularity of nationalist parties in France, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands suggests that political paralysis in other EU countries is on the way.

In short, the ambitions of the ruling political cliques of Europe to solve the problems of the world are being undermined by their own neglected electorates, which are increasingly furious at the failure of those cliques to solve the problems of Europe itself. Four years ago, we wrote about Europe’s Imminent Revolution. Two years ago, about the attempt and failure of those cliques to turn the EU into a make-believe copy of the United States. Today, that revolution is creeping ahead month by month.

Before threatening Israel’s security and local supremacy, the EU foreign ministers could have recalled the results of their previous nonchalant meddling in the area. We were all rightly horrified by the threat of Muammar Gaddafi to hunt down his enemies “street by street, house by house,” as he began by shooting hundreds in his capital, in February 2011. Hollande’s predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, rallied European leaders — first and foremost the UK’s David Cameron — to do something about it. President Obama turned up to give a speech, something that he is good at. More importantly, Obama supplied warplanes from the NATO base in Naples. The idea was to enable victory for the Libyan rebel forces by paralyzing Gaddafi’s own air force and bombing his land forces.

Have we reached a point of no return? Multicultural societies — from 19th-century Austria–Hungary to contemporary Iraq, Lebanon, the former Yugoslavia, and Rwanda — have a poor record of keeping the peace between competing tribes. They usually end up mired in nihilistic and endemic violence. The only hope for history’s rare multiracial, multiethnic, and multireligious nations is to adopt a common culture, one that artificially suppresses the natural instinct of humans to identify first with their particular tribe. America, in the logical spirit of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, was exceptional among modern societies in slowly evolving from its original, largely European immigrant population to a 21st-century assimilated, integrated, and intermarried multiracial society, in which religious and racial affiliations were incidental, not essential, to one’s public character and identity.

    • The real big question is can the damage be repaired? The left has spent decades bringing tribalism back to the US and we are going to have to once again create the melting pot to meld all cultures into one all encompassing culture.

Can this be done? Yes but not easily and it will take a long time since the groups benefiting from the grievance subculture of the multiculti programs. This grievance subculture has to be removed but people who want free food and shelter aren’t going to change easily and the people who are buying votes by having the producers pay for the food and shelter of the grievance culture aren’t going to be easy to remove from power.

Another part of the damage that will be difficult to repair is to restore the educational industry to the business of educating people instead of indoctronating them in left wing memes.

The above describes the problems in all western cultures where the left has had a significant amount of power over the past 7 decades. Ironically the nations of Eastern Europe who suffered under full blown communism for so long are the nations that are resisting the modern left the best and can provide the examples for the rest of us to follow.

      • Tough questions. I’m sorta pessimistic.

“Sorta” because I don’t think we’re going to mop-up and recover to anything like the status quo ante. Kids born today won’t believe our tales about “the good old days.” J.E. Dyer wrote “paradigm shift” in one context or another recently, and I thought, ‘Great minds….’

To touch just one of your points, the indoctrination – The most egregious cases will shatter like brittle glass when reality hits. That’ll claim the lives of many and maim the rest. De-Nazification might help survivors.

One thing’s for sure, though: the loss of the academy is irrevocable.

Fluffy social studies and subversive, agenda-driven funding murdered the Humanities at the University. The liberal arts core that educated people to communicate over time, space, and culture is gone. Sargon and Stephen Molyneux show us the warped grotesqueries in death-throes. We watch in horror, just as we peak at ISIS atrocities.

What remains of that rich, dense, textured fabric will have to be stored carefully. Some equivalent to the medieval monastery.

Purpose-driven technical and R&D institutes should do very well, though. They’re integrating the innovations in communication and virtual reality labs in wholly new and exciting ways. The best minds will find each other and sparks will fly.

The home-schooling movement goes in the right direction. Just getting government out of our schools – or kids out of the clutches of government – that’s emergency priority. Of course that means families and that’s another thing…

        • We are seeing the same future and the destruction of civilization is the most probably result of the current mess. I think that freedom will survive but in a lot of ways we will resemble the distopian future novels of the 50s and 60s. I don’t see the US disappearing but I do see most of the European style Parliamentary nations changing and some of them being destroyed.

The lose of the academy is will do the most damage to us, home schooling and private tudors and schools will become the norm in the future and anyone that can’t afford to stay home to home school or pay for a private school will be at best functional illiterates. Yes technology will advance and the exploration and exploitation of space resources will grow as the new tech advances.

  9. Venezuela: 35,000 Cross After President Opens Border for 12 Hours

The socialist government of Venezuela opened its western border with Colombia for 12 hours this weekend as a means of combatting growing food shortages in the nation. An estimated 35,000 took advantage of the opening to buy basic food items like sugar and flour and to visit relatives they were barred from seeing after a mass deportation last year.

The government of President Nicolás Maduro announced on Friday that the border would be fully open for those seeking to travel to Colombia from the border state of Táchira for 12 hours. Colombian newspaper El Tiempo reports that the line to cross the bridge into Cúcuta, Colombia began forming at 3 AM the morning before the event, with Venezuelans passing the time by chanting “holy land,” referring to the neighboring country, and counting the goods they were hoping to buy. Border patrol agents began to allow Venezuelans to cross the border at 5 AM local time.

“We don’t have anything to eat to give our children, so I don’t find it fair that the border remains closed,” one woman who crossed the border told El Tiempo. Those who managed to stock up during the limited time that the border remained open, however, appeared satisfied. “We bought rice, pasta, sugar, toilet paper, butter, everything we could bring back. We had enough for lots of stuff,” one father told the Spanish newswire service EFE. All expressed gratitude towards Colombian vendors for welcoming them to Cúcuta, with some carrying signs reading, “Colombia, thank you for your solidarity with Venezuela.”

  10. IMPD officer’s house shot 5 times, man in custodyINDIANAPOLIS — A man was taken into custody on suspicion of shooting at an IMPD officer’s house and his patrol car on the near east side around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The officer was at home and awake, his wife and 10-year-old son were asleep at the time. No one was hurt.

Investigators found 17 shell casings at the scene. There were three bullet holes in the police car and five in the house.

The suspect, 27-year-old March Ratney, has had nearly a dozen run-ins with the law over the past decade. Click the image below to see more:

  12. NSFW: This is what Happens to Women in Germany Who Don’t Wear Their Hijab [WARNING: Graphic Video]

Sadly, in 2016 Germany, women are being treated the same way they are in Iran if they do not dress according to Shari’a law. In Iran, acid attacks are frequently perpetrated against women and girls who do not wear proper hijab. A hijab is the scarf that covers the head and chest and is supposed to be pinned around the face so that the woman’s hair and neck are covered. If the hijab is worn incorrectly, according to Sharia police, they suffer being beaten, doused with acid or lit on fire, beaten, prison, or death.

In this case, a woman in Germany was doused with fire. This is Islam. This is how women are treated under Islam. And it’s now being carried out on the streets and metro station platforms of Germany.

    • Doused with fire? The cellmate of the main character of “Midnight Express,” a black man named Ron Emmons, graduate of Hyde Park HS in Chicago, talks about how the Turkish authorities sprayed gas on prisoners and set them on fire. This must be an Islamic thing and should be met with gunfire on the streets.

  13. DAILY MAIL Laptops recovered from ISIS jihadists are filled ‘up to 80%’ with PORN, reveals former US intelligence director

Michael Flynn says laptops seized from jihadis are filled with porn films
Says this is what is desensitising fanatics into carrying out brutal attacks
Adds that the West must work quickly to outwit ‘psychopathic enemies’

A former US intelligence director has revealed that laptops seized from ISIS jihadis are filled up to 80 per cent with porn films.

Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, an ex-chief of the Defence Intelligence Agency says the graphic films inures extremists to carry out their hideous brutality.

And he adds that intelligence gathering and the closing down of the fanatics’ communications channels is key to beating them.

Flynn made the claims in the German newspaper Bild, where his book on winning the war against radical Islam is being serialised.

The veteran, who is a potential running mate for Donald Trump in the US election later this year, wrote: ‘We looked a ruthless enemy in the eye – women and children, girls and boys, raped and exploited, the beheadings stored on a laptop next to pornography.

‘At one point we actually had determined that the material on the laptops was up to 80 per cent pornography.

‘These sick, psychopathic enemies were not only unimaginably hideous, but also treacherous and torn. We had to work faster to outwit them if we wanted to beat them.’

However, it is not the first time that jihadis have been linked to having pornography on their laptops.

Last year, former London mayor Boris Johnson said that homegrown fanatics from the UK who go to join ISIS are w*****s who watch porn because they can’t find girlfriends.

He explained that British terrorists often become radicalised because of their badly adjusted relations with women and turn to extremism to stop them feeling like losers.

Speaking at the time, Mr Johnson said: ‘If you look at all the psychological profiling about bombers, they typically will look at porn. They are literally w*****s’.

Meanwhile US officials also revealed in 2011 that former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had a stash of pornography as he hid in his squalid lair in Pakistan.

U.S. Navy Seals said they uncovered the x-rated films during the mission to kill the terror leader, who masterminded the 9/11 attacks.

According to officials, the commandos found a ‘fairly extensive’ collection of modern porn films as they searched the building after Bin Laden was shot.

It has also been reported that the 9/11 jihadists visited strip clubs, paid for lap dances, and for prostitutes in motel rooms in Boston, Las Vegas and Florida before the attacks.

  14. BLACK LIVES MATTER (BLM)

Black Lives Matter (BLM) was established as an online platform in 2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi. Their objective was to stoke black rage and galvanize a protest movement in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the “white Hispanic” who was tried for murder and manslaughter after he had shot and killed a black Florida teenager named Trayvon Martin in a highly publicized February 2012 altercation. Before long, “Black Lives Matter” became a rallying cry for writers, public speakers, celebrities, demonstrators, and even rioters who took up the cause of demanding an end to what BLM terms the “virulent anti-Black racism” that “permeates our society.” In 2014, BLM also adopted the slogan “Hands Up–Don’t Shoot!,” which was first popularized by Dream Defenders and grew out of that year’s death of Michael Brown, a young black man in Ferguson, Missouri who was killed by a white police officer after he had tried to take the officer’s handgun during a confrontation. (In the immediate aftermath of that incident, numerous racial agitators circulated the false narrative that Brown had been shot after raising his hands in submission and pleading, “Don’t shoot.”)

Demanding that Americans “abandon the lie that the deep psychological wounds of slavery, racism and structural oppression are figments of the Black imagination,” BLM aims to force the country to become “uncomfortable about institutional racism.” Emphasizing the permanence and intransigence of American depredations, BLM maintains that the nation’s “corrupt democracy” was originally “built on Indigenous genocide and chattel slavery” and “continues to thrive on the brutal exploitation of people of color”; that “the ugly American traditions of patriarchy, classism, racism, and militarism” endure to this day; that “structural oppression” still “prevents so many from realizing their dreams”; and that blacks in the U.S. are routinely “de-humaniz[ed],” rendered “powerless at the hands of the state,” “deprived of [their] basic human rights and dignity,” and targeted for “extrajudicial killings … by police and vigilantes.” In sum, says BLM, black Americans are “collectively” subjected to “inhumane conditions” in a “white supremacist system.”

Though BLM professes to articulate the needs and grievances of black people as a whole, the organization deems it vital to go “beyond the narrow nationalism” that “merely” urges black people to “love Black, live Black, and buy Black.” That is, it focuses an added measure of attention on those blacks who, in the past, “have been marginalized within Black liberation movements.” These include, most notably, black “queer and trans,” who “bear a unique burden from a hetero-patriarchal society that disposes of us like garbage and simultaneously fetishizes us and profits off of us”; black “undocumented immigrants” who are “relegated to the shadows” of American society; black “disabled” people who “bear the burden of state-sponsored Darwinian experiments that attempt to squeeze us into boxes of normality defined by white supremacy”; and blacks who self-identify along non-traditional points of the “gender spectrum.”

  15. OTTAWA – OC Transpo swarming leads to charges

Six teenagers have been charged following an overnight swarming on an OC Transpo bus bound for Barrhaven early Tuesday morning, according to Ottawa police.

Officers say around 3 a.m. one of the suspects approached a passenger on the bus and demanded his watch. When the passenger refused, the suspect pulled out a knife and demanded the passenger hand over everything he had, police said.

Police said that’s when five other teens jumped in, assaulting the victim and stealing some items.

Police said the teens also tried to steal items from another passenger.

Police said the group exited the bus at the Fallowfield bus station. Patrol officers tracked them down soon after and arrested them.

An 18-year-old man is charged as an adult with two counts each of robbery and intimidation and one count of conspiracy. Five other suspects, three boys and two girls between the ages of 15 and 17, have been charged with robbery, intimidation and conspiracy.

Two of the five also face charges of obstructing a peace officer and impersonation. Another faces an additional charge for breaching a condition from a previous sentence under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police say no one was injured.

  16. CRIME AGAINST BLACKS AND HISPANICS IN AREAS CONTROLLED BY THE LEFT

America’s ten most dangerous cities—as measured by federal crime statistics—have one highly notable feature in common: All are led politically by Democratic mayors. Most, in fact, have been controlled by Democrats for a very long time. For example, Detroit, which in 2015 ranked as the nation’s most dangerous city, has not had a Republican mayor since 1961. The second most dangerous city in 2015 was Oakland, California, a Democrat stronghold since 1977. Third was Memphis, in Democratic hands since 1991. Fourth was St. Louis, which has been led exclusively by Democratic mayors since 1949. Fifth was Cleveland, where no Republican has been mayor since 1989. Sixth was Baltimore, Democrat-led since 1967. Seventh was Milwaukee, which has elected only Democratic mayors since 1908. Eighth was Birmingham, which has been Democrat-run since 1975. Ninth was Newark, a Democrat bastion since 1933. And tenth was Kansas City, Missouri, which has not seen a Republican mayor since 1991.

New York City, which in the early 1990s transitioned away from nearly half a century of Democratic leadership, serves as a case study not only of how left-wing law-enforcement policies helped breed crime and chaos for a long period of time, but also how the cessation of those policies caused crime to plummet almost instantly.

From 1946 through 1993, New York was led, in succession, by the following Democratic mayors: William O’Dwyer, Vincent Impellitteri, Robert Wagner, John Lindsay, Abraham Beame, Ed Koch, and David Dinkins. Under the stewardship of these men, the city’s crime rates rose sharply and consistently, as reflected most starkly in its homicide statistics. In 1960, some 482 homicides occurred within the confines of New York’s five boroughs. By 1970, that figure had risen to 1,117. In 1980, it was 1,814. The apex was reached under Mayor Dinkins in 1990, when 2,245 people lost their lives to violence. During the ensuing three years of Dinkins’ mayoralty, the city’s homicide totals were 2,154, then 1,995, and finally 1,946.

  17. RESEARCH & DEGROWTH (R&D)

Established in 2011, Research & Degrowth (R&D) is an academic association dedicated to promoting the concept of “sustainable degrowth,” which it defines as “a multi-level voluntary path towards reduction of production and consumption, aiming at ecological sustainability, good life, liberty, and social justice.” Additional major hallmarks of degrowth, says R&D, include: an ethic whereby societies resolve to “live within their ecological means”; the development of “localized economies” where “resources [are] more equally distributed through new forms of democratic institutions” (i.e., socialism); and the cessation of “material accumulation,” in favor of “convivial” and “frugal” lifestyles that assign more importance to “sufficiency” than to surplus.

To advance these values, R&D conducts research, provides academic trainings for individuals and groups alike, and organizes events designed to raise public awareness about degrowth. Most of R&D’s activities presently take place in Spain and France, though the group also has held major conferences in places like Venice, Montreal, Leipzig, and Budapest since 2012.

Rejecting “the centrality of GDP as an overarching policy objective,” R&D views free-market capitalism as inherently destructive to human relations and the natural environment. Capitalism’s “ever-expanding financial and monetary sphere,” says the organization, “is related to our ever-expanding exploitation of resources and humans.” Thus R&D favors “a shrinking of the economic system to leave more space for human cooperation and ecosystems.” The group’s anti-capitalist catechism also advocates strict “limits to private property” while championing “communal property rights” over all manner of commodities. For instance, R&D maintains that “superficial, ground, and desalted water” should be publicly—not privately—owned and managed at the municipal level.

On the premise that “harmful industrial production” and “conspicuous consumption” are among the many vices intrinsic to capitalism, R&D advocates a new economic arrangement that features “work-sharing,” “limits to paid working hours,” “earlier retirement,” “longer holidays,” “accessible childcare” (funded by tax dollars), and “a progressive income tax [designed] to reduce inequality.” Further, the organization calls for a monetary value to be placed on “unpaid, household/community work.”

These new economic policies should be complemented, says R&D, by public education campaigns aimed at persuading people to believe that high levels of consumption, production, and long-distance travel are not only unnecessary in most instances, but are also harmful to the environment. Impugning “the drive to buy/produce more than our basic needs require,” R&D asserts that advertising in public spaces “should be limited.” Further, the organization maintains: “[A]ll ads that affect children/vulnerable people, [affect] health, involve CO2-intensive sectors, or have sexist messages” should—because of their “manipulative nature”—be subject to heavy “regulation” and “taxation,” and in some cases outright “bans.”

  18. Chicago Activist: We Need to Abolish the Police, Period.

On Monday night, a black community worker from Chicago openly advocated the abolition of the police force across America. She argued that the institution began with slavery in America and needs to be scrapped entirely.

“Here’s the solution, we need to abolish the police, period,” declared Jessica Disu on Fox News’ “The Kelly File.” Her suggestion got an immediate groan. “De-militarize the police, disarm the police, we need to come up with community solutions for transformative justice.”

Disu was one member of a large “focus group” assembled by Fox News to address the shootings in Dallas, Texas last Thursday. As the Chicago community organizer spoke, other members of the group tried to interrupt. The host, Megyn Kelly, insisted the others allow Disu to speak.

  19. Police Walk Off Job After WNBA Team Dons Black Lives Matter Gear

Pro-tip: if you want off-duty police officers to voluntarily place themselves in harm’s way while protecting your event, you probably shouldn’t protest them. The Minnesota Lynx, of the Women’s National Basketball Association, learned that lesson after hopping on the anti-police bandwagon at a recent game. From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

Four off-duty Minneapolis police officers working the Minnesota Lynx game at Target Center on Saturday night walked off the job after the players held a news conference denouncing racial profiling, then wore Black Lives Matter pregame warm-up jerseys.

Lt. Bob Kroll, president of the Minneapolis Police Federation, the union that represents rank-and-file officers, praised them for quitting. “I commend them for it,” he said. Kroll said the four officers also removed themselves from a list of officers working future games. He did not know who the officers were. “Others said they heard about it and they were not going to work Lynx games,” he said.

Asked if other officers will fill in for those who quit, Kroll said, “If [the players] are going to keep their stance, all officers may refuse to work there.”

    • The left never things their actions will have personal repercussions, I will bet that they will have trouble finding off duty police to provide security at all of their games.

  20. Some Black Lives Matter Activists Want To Abolish The Police. Here’s What Would Happen Next.

So, the left has hit on a hot new solution to supposed systemic racist brutality from American police departments: disband the police.

This bizarre notion has picked up steam in recent weeks, as leftists continue to label cops systemically racist. Jessica Disu, a black activist, told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly last night, “We need to abolish the police. Period.” When asked by Kelly who would then protect the community, she answered: “We need to come up with community solutions.”

The problem in high crime communities has been lack of police – and the community solution that rises in the wake of such a dearth is gang murder. If people can’t rely on the police to keep the peace, they join a gang to ensure the threat of revenge if they are harmed. As Jill Loevy of The Los Angeles Times has written in her book, Ghettoside, “African Americans have suffered from just such a lack of effective criminal justice, and this, more than anything, is the reason for the nation’s long-standing plague of black homicides…[Lack of police] left ample room for vigilantism.” If the cops won’t protect you, you must find someone who will. One of the most horrific costs of Jim Crow was the unwillingness of white police departments to police black-on-black murder.

  21. CHICAGO – Islamic state cartoon controversy

A Tribune cartoon does a disservice to Muslims

The man shown prostrating (in a Michael Ramirez cartoon published in Saturday’s Tribune) is not a depiction of ISIS, so the cartoonist had to write ISIS on his clothes. Had the cartoonist worked with a picture that does depict ISIS — for example, the beheading of James Foley — he wouldn’t need an identification.

The cartoon, instead, maligns 1.6 billion Muslims around the world by associating ISIS with a praying Muslim and by associating prostration with the most degraded condition of a human being. The position of prostration is well known as the position of Muslim prayer. Muslims readily put their head down on the ground in front of their creator. Muslims regard that as a position that brings them closest to God. Muslims take that position not just in designated worships but also when they seek something special from God. The cartoon does a great disservice to Muslims and promotes further Islamophobia.

Had the cartoonist chosen another depiction of human in the degraded position and associated ISIS with it, most Muslims would have no problems with it and would applaud it. We hope that this erroneous cartoon by an experienced and decorated cartoonist does not reflect his own bias against Islam and Muslims.

  22. End of ISIS? Jihadis concede defeat but hatch secret post-caliphate plan for terror surge (express, July 13, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/689162/Islamic-State-terror-group-prepares-terrorists-end-caliphate

“ISLAMIC State is preparing for the beginning of the end of their self-styled caliphate with an acknowledgement that the barbaric death cult may soon lose all of its territory in the Middle East.

In signs that the fanatics are finally conceding defeat, ISIS commanders ordered the closure of internet cafes and the destruction of TVs and satellite dishes to limit access to news from the outside world of the group’s impending defeat.

An article in ISIS’ weekly Arabic newsletter, al-Naba, also signalled an awareness that the group was close to collapse.

But it went on to warn the West that the destruction of the group’s territory in the Middle Was would not signal the end of the group’s influence…”

  23. NATO rift intensifies as Germany threatens to withdraw troops from Turkish air base (express, July 13, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/689130/Germany-threatens-withdraw-Turkey-NATO-Incirilik-air-base

“GERMANY has threatened to withdraw hundreds of troops from a NATO base in Turkey after authorities there blocked access for German diplomats.

Amid a fast-escalating dispute between Berlin and Ankara, Turkey has continued to refuse German MPs permission to visit the Incirilik air base.

Relations soured in May after the German parliament passed a resolution declaring the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman forces was genocide, causing deep anger in Turkey.

Germany sent troops, six Tornado surveillance jets and a tanker aircraft to Incirlik late last year as part of the fight against Islamic State militants.

But Turkish diplomats have attempted to stop German parliamentarians visiting the 250 troops stationed there.

Now, in comments that risk a split in NATO operations, German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel warned the soldiers may be withdrawn.

He said: “The German army answers to parliament, and if parliament cannot visit its army, then the army cannot stay there. This is absolutely clear.”

Turkey is a key strategic base for NATO members conducting operations in the Middle East, given its proximity to the fighting against ISIS in Syria and northern Iraq.

Incirlik is used by the Turkish Air Force as well as a number of international air forces, including Saudi Arabia, the US and the British RAF.

It is also one of only six NATO sites in Europe to house nuclear warheads.

Incirlik, which means ‘fig tree grove’ in Turkish, hosted hundreds of American soldiers during the first and second Gulf wars in Kuwait and Iraq.

As recently as April German defence officials revealed plans for a €65million investment in the air base.

Due for completion in 2017, the proposal included an air control tower, accomodation for troops and a combat headquarters. The future of these remains uncertain.

Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen was allowed access to the base last week but only after tense negotiations between Berlin and Ankara.

Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted yesterday that German lawmakers must be allowed to visit the soldiers and that she would try to solve the issue with the Turkish government.

Her spokesman said: “The goal is crystal clear: it must be possible for our deputies to visit our soldiers.

“Of course it is necessary for our Bundestag deputies to be able to see our military in Turkey at Incirlik – it is a military under the control of the parliament.”

Tensions between the supposed NATO allies comes as Germany announced plans for its military to play a greater role on the world stage.

According to a policy document drawn up by Ms Merkel’s government, the country’s army must play an “increased role in international security policy”.”

  24. THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE REMOVED THE CARTOON FROM ITS WEBSITE .

Cartoon Controversy Roils Local Muslim Leaders

Some Muslim leaders in the Chicago area are calling foul on an editorial cartoon published by the Chicago Tribune on Saturday. Titled “De-evolution,” the image by Michael Ramirez parodied the iconic “ March of Progress” illustration, which shows human evolution as a series of figures evolving from apelike ancestors to modern humans standing erect. Ramirez’s work reverses the order, starting with a modern human and ending with the most devolved figure: a man lying prostrate as if in prayer, labeled with the word “ISIS.”

“It makes it as if ISIS is just your average, mainstream Muslim who’s prostrating in prayer – something we all do – as opposed to what is unique and problematic about them,” said Ahmed Rehab of the Council on American Islamic Relations. Rehab penned his concerns in a letter that ran in Tuesday’s Chicago Tribune.

“The cartoon does a great disservice to Muslims and promotes further Islamophobia,” wrote Mohammed Kaiseruddin, chairman, Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, in another letter to the paper.

In addition to publishing letters of concern from members of the Chicago-area Muslim community, the Chicago Tribune removed the cartoon from its website. “We understand the deep concerns about Michael Ramirez’ cartoon and have moved quickly to publish responses from Islamic leaders and other readers that reflect those concerns,” said John McCormick, Editorial Page Editor at the Chicago Tribune.

    =======================================================
A Tribune cartoon missed the key symbolism

The Tribune’s editorial cartoon published on Saturday misses the point. The cartoon depicts a backward evolution of man to ape with an Islamic State terrorist depicted at the bottom of the evolutionary scale, prostrating in prayer.

I, and I am certain most Muslims, would agree with the suggestion that the Islamic State is a backward evolution of humanity. But it is not the form of prayer, shared by the majority of its victims (Muslims), that makes the Islamic State lower than apes; rather, it is its violent ideology of hate.

Toward that end, cartoonist Michael Ramirez could have depicted the Islamic State figure crouching down in combat with a rifle in hand, or about to detonate a bomb, thus making the key distinction clear. Instead, he chose symbolism (prostration in prayer) that is not only representative of all Muslims, but also of the greatest biblical figures, including Abraham, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, the elders of Israel and, yes, even Jesus, all of whose prayer the bible describes as “falling on their faces” to the ground in worship.

We are tired of the conflation of all Muslims with the Islamic State. The Islamic State kills multiple times more Muslims than anyone else.More Muslims than followers of any other faith give life and limb on the battleground fighting the Islamic State. Commentators need to vilify the uniqueness of the Islamic State, not the features that it happens to have in common with the more than 1.5 billion people who not only detest them, but die fighting them.

Ramirez seems to understand that the Islamic State could still be deemed lower than apes “despite” them being human, not because of it. Can he understand that they could also be deemed so, “despite” them being Muslim, not because of it?

  25. Report: FBI agents believe ‘inside deal’ happened in Clinton email probe

FBI agents are reportedly skeptical of the law enforcement agency’s decision to close the Hillary Clinton email investigation without recommending criminal charges.

Agents told the New York Post that they “believe there was an inside deal put in place” after Attorney General Loretta Lynch met privately with former President Bill Clinton just days ahead of the FBI’s announcement that its year-long probe had ended.

Investigators were reportedly forced to sign unusually extensive nondisclosure agreements that would prevent them from speaking publicly about the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s private email use.

The FBI’s decision last week rankled Republicans, who have pushed the Justice Department to open a second probe into whether the former secretary of state committeed perjury last year when she testified before the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

FBI agents signed NDA for matters involving Hillary’s emails

n an unusual move, FBI agents working the Hillary Clinton e-mail case had to sign a special form reminding them not to blab about the probe to anyone unless called to testify.

Sources said they had never heard of the “Case Briefing Acknowledgment” form being used before, although all agents must initially sign nondisclosure agreements to obtain security clearance.

“This is very, very unusual. I’ve never signed one, never circulated one to others,” said one retired FBI chief.

An FBI agent currently on the job admitted, “I have never heard of such a form. Sounds strange.”

Meanwhile, FBI agents expressed their “disappointment” over FBI Director James Comey’s decision not to recommend charges against Clinton, sources close to the matter told The Post.

“FBI agents believe there was an inside deal put in place after the Loretta Lynch/Bill Clinton tarmac meeting,” said one source.

Another source from the Justice Department was “furious” with Comey, saying he’s “managed to piss off right and left.”

  27. France: Tensions high as refugees protest for asylum in Paris

Dozens of refugees and migrants attempted to hold a protest rally near the Jaures metro station in Paris on Wednesday, to call for asylum and for more help from the French state.

After several minor altercations with local residents and a brief protest, police later reportedly arrived and escorted many of the refugees away from the area.

SOT, Romain, Nuit Debout activist (French): “Today we have a camp that was set up in front of ‘France Terre d’Asile’ [asylum registration centre], after the eviction of several camps, for example in Halles Pajol, in Jardin des Halles, [and] above the La Chapelle Metro. There are many camps that have been dismantled by the police, who move the refugees into places 90 km from Paris in precarious situations with bad food. They are well fed here by the local people and [activist] associations.”

  28. Germany: De Maiziere reports on raids of people accused of online hate speech

The German Interior Minister discussed the beginning of nationwide raids against people suspected of posting messages on social media deemed to amount to hate crimes, during a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

SOT, Thomas de Maiziere, German Minister for Interior (German): “Today we had an operation regarding hate crime, I have already reported on this and the investigation has revealed hate postings in various locations and those who have systematically and persistently posted hate online, committed offences through hate online. And that should show that, as well as, prevention, repression and criminal prosecution belong together.”

SOT, Thomas de Maiziere, German Minister for Interior (German): “Those that procure information, for the Protection of the Constitution, both on a state and national level, are not establishing the observation of their work. We have heard and learnt, and are pleased to have learnt, that there is a possibility, along with the ‘NSU-Komplex’ [National Socialist Underground], that through their transgressions, in particular about the elite of the middle and the frontmen. “A news agency linked to so-called Islamic State has confirmed the death of key leader Omar Shishani, who the US said it killed in March.

The Amaq news agency said Shishani was killed in combat in the town of Shirqat, south of Mosul in Iraq.

The Pentagon said in March he had died from injuries sustained in a US air strike in north-eastern Syria.

Shishani’s real name was Tarkhan Batirashvili but he was also known as Omar the Chechen.

The red-bearded jihadist was said to be a close military adviser to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The confirmation came on the Amaq website, which IS regularly uses to issue news and which had denied the Pentagon’s claims in March.

Amaq said he died trying to repel forces campaigning to retake the city of Mosul…”

  30. Frenchwoman ‘wrongly fired for refusing to remove hijab’ (thelocal, July 13, 2016)
    http://www.thelocal.fr/20160713/frenchwoman-wrongly-sacked-for-wearing-muslim-headscarf

“A European court of Justice advocate has backed a French woman who was sacked after she refused her boss’s request to stop wearing her hijab at work, because it was making clients feel uneasy.

The woman, named Asma Bougnaoui, lost her job at IT consultancy Micopole SA in 2009 just 11 months after starting.

She had been asked by her bosses to stop wearing her Muslim veil claiming clients at the company she was working with felt uneasy by her choice of head wear.

But she refused and was forced out.

She complained to an employment tribunal which found in favour of her bosses, but after lodging an appeal her case has ended up before the European Court of Justice.

In a preliminary opinion Eleanor Sharpston, the advocate general at the European court, judged that a company policy that requires an employee to remove her hijab when in contact with clients constitutes “unlawful direct discrimination”.

Sharpston said the EU rules on discrimination does allow for strict rules on appearance if it is a “genuine and determining occupational requirement”, but that could not be applied in the case of an IT consultant.

She stated that if the woman had been wearing a full face veil, like the niqab or burqa then would have crossed the line because: “Western society regards visual or eye contact as being of fundamental importance in any relationship involving face-to-face communication.”

She concluded that businesses should put the interests of their employees before their own.

“It is not about losing one’s job in order to help the employer’s profit line,” Sharpston said.

Her opinion does not quite signal victory for Bougnaoui because it is not binding. The court will issue a final judgement on the case later this year, but preliminary rulings are normally followed.

The ECJ judgment will be binding on member states.

France famously banned the wearing of the hijab in schools and public buildings back in 2004, before introducing a ban on the full face veil in public places in 2010.

The issue of the wearing of Muslim headscarves regularly flares up in a country that has found it difficult to reconcile the growing presence of Islam with French culture.

There have been regular calls to extend the ban on Muslim headscarves and other religious symbols to the work place, while recently PM Manuel Valls said he would be in favour of universities also prohibiting the wearing of hijabs.”

    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/233113/Egypt/Politics-/Egyptian-preachers-to-recite-governmentissued-spee.aspx

“The Egyptian government said Tuesday that Muslim preachers in the country must now adhere to uniform pre-written weekly sermons, a controversial move that authorities say is aimed at combating extremism but has irked some clerics.

The Ministry of Religious Endowments has since 2014 been setting topics for weekly sermons delivered during Friday prayers across the country, but the new move would further restrict preachers in Egypt’s more than 100,000 mosques to read out the same text.

“The objective [of the decision] is not at all political,” Minister of Religious Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa said Tuesday, stressing that the aim is to push moderate Islamic ideology and ensure that radical ideas do not spread.

Officials say the move will help address problems in preaching, including “being lengthy” or “politicising topics.”

The sermons will be drawn up by ministry officials and senior scholars from Egypt’s Al-Azhar — the highest seat of Sunni Islam learning — with contributions from members of parliament’s religious affairs committee, psychologists and sociologists, the head of the ministry’s religious division Gaber Tayea told Ahram Online….”
