  1. Kurz: EU migration policy a “dramatic failure” (thelocal, June 29, 2016)
    http://www.thelocal.at/20160629/kurz-says-eu-migration-policy-a-dramatic-failure

“Austria’s Foreign Minister, Sebastian Kurz, has warned that the refugee crisis could break the European Union apart, and described EU migration policy as a “dramatic failure”.

In an interview with German media, including Die Welt, he said that the refugee crisis had become an emotional issue and had been decisive in influencing the outcome of the UK’s referendum on whether to leave the EU. He warned that other countries may decide to follow Britain’s example.

He said that Austria also “expects more of Europe” and that the issue of how to manage the continuing influx of refugees and migrants “is high on people’s agenda” and that they want answers on how Europe’s problems can be solved.

At the same time he defended Austria’s refugee policy, saying “I’d like to see more understanding from Germany for our position, especially as Germany has no problems with controls on the Austrian-German border.”

And he repeated his demand for migrants to be intercepted before they arrive by boat. “If someone tries to come illegally to Europe, they must be stopped at the EU’s external border and returned to their transit country or country of origin – otherwise we are indirectly supporting people smugglers and even more people will drown.”

Earlier this month Kurz was heavily criticised for suggesting that the European Union should follow Australia’s example and hold asylum seekers on islands rather than allowing them direct access to the continent, a move which he said would discourage migrants from setting out on the often perilous journey to Europe.”

    • no problems with controls on the Austrian-German border…
They’ve got themselves a regular little Anschluss, don’t they?
      How sweet.

  2. The EU is bigger than Brussels, blasts Hungarian PM as he blames immigration for Brexit
THE Prime Minister of Hungary has hit out at Brussels chiefs for losing sight of what the European Union stands for.

In a furious speech Viktor Orban said the EU’s power remains in its member states not in its institutions such as the European Commission based in Brussels.

He said: “Those 27 countries who remain the part of the EU should practice self-criticism.

“If we want to restore the democratic nature of the EU, we should return to the thought that the base of the European Union is its countries and not its institutions. The European Union is not in Brussels, but in the 27, or – for the time being – in its 28 European capitals, that has got a co-operation centre in Brussels.

    • From later in that same article linked above:

Mr Orban’s ruling Fidesz party has initiated a referendum of its own, to be held in September or October, on whether Hungary should reject any future mandatory quotas from Brussels to resettle migrants arriving en masse from countries such as Syria.

      • Mr. Orban knows how they’ll vote. He just wants to watch the untouchables ~ ~ Tusk + Junk + Mogherat ~~ suffer.

  3. Victims’ rights group calls for more therapy for refugees in Germany (DW, June 29, 2016)
    http://www.dw.com/en/victims-rights-group-calls-for-more-therapy-for-refugees-in-germany/a-19363578

“A German victim protection organization has called for more therapy to help traumatized refugees. The group has pointed to a rise in attacks against refugee shelters as one of the reasons for the increase is needed.

In light of the rising attacks against refugee shelters in Germany, one organization said there is a need for more therapy and trauma specialists for refugees, according to a German newspaper report on Wednesday.

“When refugees who come from war zones are attacked again, it is the duty of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees to ensure psychotherapeutic care,” Weißer Ring national chairwoman Roswitha Müller-Piepenkötter told the daily “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.”

She added that this care is too infrequently provided.

There is a shortage of trained trauma therapists in Germany, Müller-Piepenkötter said, citing high requirements for entry into medical and psychotherapists’ professional associations as well as a lack of training opportunities…”

  6. Egypt’s Sisi calls for purging religious discourse of extremist ideas (ahram, June 29, 2016)
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/232135/Egypt/Politics-/Egypts-Sisi-calls-for-purging-religious-discourse-.aspx

“Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi urged Arab and Muslim countries to unite in the face of terrorism and called for purging religious discourse of extremism.

“The Muslim world is going through a dangerous turning point and is facing unprecedented challenges targeting its existence and people, [and facing this] requires concerted efforts from all of us while putting all differences aside,” El-Sisi said during a speech Wednesday.

El-Sisi warned against those exploiting sectarian or ethnic differences to cause division in the Muslim world.

The president made his remarks during a nationally televised address commemorating the anniversary of Laylat Al-Kadr (Night of Destiny), when Muslims believe the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.

The president also urged scholars from Egypt’s Al-Azhar, the highest seat of Sunni Muslim learning, to rethink religious discourse and “purge it of flaws” that negatively affect Islam.

El-Sisi has more than once blamed outdated “religious discourse” for holding back Egypt and called for “a religious revolution” in Islam, saying that radicalized thinking has become a source of destruction for the rest of the world.”

  10. The number of militant Islamist attacks in Africa has more than quadrupled in just the past six years, according to new research published Monday.

Militant Islamist attacks grew from just 171 across Africa in 2009, to 738 attacks in 2015, according to new analysis by IHS Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Centre.

Deaths from the attacks have grown from 541 in 2009 to 4,600 fatalities — an increase of more than 750 percent.

Experts say there are three new trends causing this rise: Collaboration between Boko Haram and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS); competition between al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and ISIS for territory and recruits; and the continuing resilience of al Qaeda’s Somalia branch, al-Shabab.

  11. Syria: Video shows Isis militants beheading five people suspected of being spies, putting up their heads on metal pegs [PHOTO]

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Wednesday that the Islamic State group, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), have beheaded five youngsters on charges of “spying for Syria’s New Army and the Crusade forces. [sic]” This is the latest in a string of brutalities by Daesh, as Isis is called locally, in its strongholds in Iraq and Syria.

The SOHR, on its verified Facebook page, identified the five executed youths as Asim Hammam al-Debs, Harith Ahmad Jalid, Muhannad Ahmad al-Mshawwah, Abdul Rahman Ahmad al-Ashaab and Mohannad Obaid Al-Hussein. Apparently, their arrival at the al-Bokomal desert area had rang alarm bells within Daesh, which believes spies are being sent to the region in Syria in the guise of displaced people.

  13. Why the Left Hates Referendums
When “the people” flex their democratic muscles.

One of the common laments of leftist commentators in Europe and America concerning Brexit is that holding referendums is a bad idea.

The most frequently expressed example is the contempt in which the left holds British Prime Minister David Cameron for having suggested the referendum in the first place.

But why would the left hate referendums? Doesn’t it claim to represent “the people”? Isn’t “power to the people” one of the most popular sayings of the left? Isn’t the American left trying to abolish the Electoral College precisely because it isn’t directly representative of “the people’s” will?

One would imagine, therefore, that if anyone would welcome referendums it would be the left.

    So, what gives?

The answers explain a great deal about the left.

First, the left cares about “the people” as much as the Soviet Communist Party cared about the workers. For the left, real people are either political fodder or, when they support the left, useful idiots. The left loves power, not people.

Repeat: The left loves power, not people.

  14. US airstrikes kill at least 250 ISIS fighters in convoy outside Fallujah, official says

A series of American airstrikes killed at least 250 ISIS fighters driving in a convoy outside Fallujah on Wednesday, a senior U.S. defense official confirmed to Fox News.

The strikes occurred on the outskirts of the Iraqi city in “southern Fallujah,” a second U.S. defense official told Fox News.

“There was a strike on a convoy of ISIS fighters trying to leave a neighborhood on the outskirts of southern Fallujah that we struck,” the official said.

At least 40 vehicles were destroyed in the airstrikes, a U.S. official told Reuters, which was first to report the air assault.

The U.S. airstrikes come roughly 24 hours after the Istanbul airport bombings where ISIS is considered the prime suspect, according to top U.S. officials.

  16. Schools Urged To Be Alert To Forced Marriages And FGM This Summer Holiday (breitbart, June 29, 2016)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2016/06/29/schools-urged-to-be-alert-to-forced-marriages-and-fgm-this-summer-holiday/

“British teachers should be vigilant ahead of the long summer holidays for warning signs that parents might take their children abroad to marry them off or undergo female genital mutilation (FGM), experts warned on Monday.
The end of the school term “marks the start of the cutting season where young girls are taken abroad and brutally mutilated by their families,” said Aneeta Prem, founder of Freedom Charity, which campaigns on forced marriage and FGM.

Girls and boys are at risk of being taken abroad for forced marriage, she told a conference for police, teachers and health and social workers in Stevenage, north of London.

There are an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 forced marriages or threats of forced marriage in Britain every year, experts at the conference said.

Girls threatened with forced marriage might appear anxious, depressed or withdrawn, lose interest in schoolwork or disappear from social networks such as Facebook, they said.

They also may harm themselves or develop an eating disorder.

Teachers should be alert if a girl’s family suddenly restricts her movements, arranges for her to be escorted home from school by older brothers or if she says her parents are taking her on a holiday to meet someone, Prem said…”

    • I read this tip, it’s a poster in the girls’ loo at schools and other places girls tend to gather:
Girls who fear being taken abroad for ANY reason: Put a spoon in your knickers. It’ll set off an alarm at the airport, and you’ll be separated from your parents for private screening. Explain your fear to the authorities. Airport personnel are on the alert for this signal.

  17. Muslim Tweens Denied EU Passport Because They Wouldn’t Go Swimming With Classmates (breitbart, June 29, 2016)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2016/06/29/muslim-tweens-denied-european-passport-wouldnt-go-swimming-classmates/

“Two Muslim girls have been refused a Swiss passport because the state has judged their naturalisation into society to have failed.

The refusal of a passport for the two sisters aged 12 and 14 is based upon their refusal to engage fully with the Swiss education system, in which educational class trips and swimming lessons are mandatory.

The girls, who speak German to an appropriate standard but allowed their faith to stand between themselves and becoming properly integrated, live in the city of Basel, which refused to issue the passports last year. The episode has only just come to light in Swiss press.

President of the local Naturalisation Commission Stefan Wehrle spoke to Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen this week and said that in making judgements on whether to grant passports to foreign nationals the board speaks to schools, who have the most complete picture of any government body over how well children are fitting in. Remarking that swimming lessons and school trips are compulsory in Switzerland, Mr. Wehrle said: “When this is not fulfilled, it violates the law and [applicants] are therefore not naturalised”.

The government official said his decision had set a precedent and that his legal case was “waterproof”, remarking “we are on the safe side”. He said: “The non-participation in education is an indication that someone is poorly integrated”.

Despite his confidence that the decision of the board was entirely in keeping with Swiss law, a local immigration lawyer lashed out. Stefanie Kurt from the University of Neuchâtel said Basel had “punished the wrong people”, as “it is the parents who are responsible for the religious education of children”.

The fact that the girls are reported to have also refused to shake hands with their teachers, a daily tradition in Swiss schools, suggests similarities with another recent case, also in Basel. Breitbart London reported in May about two Muslim brothers who refused to shake hands with their teachers for religious reasons, a state of affairs that initially left the headmaster of the school giving the pair a special exemption from the rules.

But the school board intervened, stating pupils were expected to shake hands with their teacher as a mark of respect, stating that integration of foreigners was higher priority than religious freedom.”

  18. ORLANDO – FBI asks agencies who responded to Pulse to deny records requests

The FBI has asked law enforcement agencies who responded to Pulse nightclub to withhold records from the public, according to officials.

A June 20 letter from the FBI, attached to the City or Orlando’s lawsuit over withholding 911 calls and other records from 25 media outlets including the Orlando Sentinel, was also sent to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office with instructions pertaining to how they should respond to records requests.

The letter requests that agencies deny inquiries and directs departments to “immediately notify the FBI of any requests your agency received” so “the FBI can seek to prevent disclosure through appropriate channels, as necessary.

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office sent the Sentinel the letter Tuesday night in response to a request for documents, video and audio recordings from the early morning hours of June 12.

A spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office said the FBI sent them the letter Monday night and “instructed us to forward it to anyone requesting records.”

The lawsuit, which was filed in Orange County Circuit Court, moved to federal court after the City of Orlando named the Department of Justice as a defendant in the case. An attorney for the city said the change was made because “the dispute is really between the FBI and the media.”

Barbara Petersen, President of the First Amendment Foundation, said the “FBI doesn’t have the authority to hijack Florida’s constitution, which guarantees us a right of access to all non-exempt public records.”

She said these records are public record subject to the state’s law.

In the letter, the FBI says they are concerned releasing records would “adversely affect our ability to effectively investigate the shooting and bring the matter to resolution.” They also say the records could endanger witnesses and law enforcement officers involved in the case.

Paul Wysopal, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Tampa field office, signed the letter. He refused comment Wednesday.

Lawyers for the media outlets argue the records should be released because there is “a strong public interest in fully evaluating how first responders and police reacted during the most critical phases of this incredible tragedy,” the lawsuit states.

The city, in its filing, said it has not released all records “out of respect for the Pulse shooting victims and the families” and at the “direction of the FBI.”

On Wednesday, the FBI denied the Sentinel’s request for records related to the shooting.
